More than 30 local businesses have built scarecrows for charity in the Viera Voice 2014 Scarecrow Stroll and Harvest Festival. As with a child or a pet, the builders had to consider names for their scarecrows, which wasn’t easy for some. For others, the task followed a certain theme, like Techno Joe Crow, VIERA VOICE 7630 N. Halloween popularity follows silver screen By Linda Wiggins

For Quest Elementary School student Riley Perkins of Viera, the choice of a Halloween costume this year was clear. She’s Elsa from the movie “Frozen” through and through. “I watch it every day. I know every word to all the songs. I know all the poses

The neon treatment gives horror a girly hue. “I like to look scary, but I still want to look pretty,” Ava said. While zombies have taken over popular culture in television, movies and video games, they don’t have as much to do with the continued popularity of dressing up for Halloween trick-or-treating and adult

Garden Club to host holiday home tour By katie Parsons

Locals are invited to kick off their holiday season in a festive way at the Spade & Trowel Garden Club Annual Home Tour. This year’s event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 100 Sundance Lane, just off South Tropical Trail north of Pineda Causeway. The home will be seasonally decorated, courtesy of Something Different in Cocoa Village. There will be

The Spade & Trowel Garden Club formed in 2010 as an offshoot of the Cocoa Rockledge Garden Club. Right now, there

The Rockledge Police Station is one of the recent places the club has worked its beautification magic. “Though we are small in numbers, our event brought in $9,000 last year,” Fraley said. Like Fraley, many of the club members are retired and just looking for a way to give back to the community during their free time. All of the money raised at the event goes to local charities and organizations, too. Some of the recipients of the funds will be Candlelighters of Brevard, the Space Coast Center for Women and Children, Walk on Water Horse Ministry and other local beautification organizations. “We just look around the community and look at what needs to be done, and then we go out and make it happen,” Fraley said. Tickets are $12 in advance and are available through a variety of merchants from Titusville to Melbourne. At the door, tickets are $15. For more information, call 321-459-0518. VV

sher Joseph is a young man of very few words, but he sure plays a mean game of golf. In May, the then-7-yearold Melbourne resident won the U.S. Kids Golf European Championship in East Lothian, Scotland. His three-day score of 98 was 10-under par, which broke a five-year-old course record for his age category. He turned 8 in July, which meant he had to play in that age group — and on a longer course — at the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships in Pinehurst, N.C. in August. Despite being the youngest player in his bracket, he finished seventh. “It’s just so cool to watch him get out there,” said Justin Blazer, Asher’s coach and the Director of Instruction at Duran Golf Club. “He thinks beyond 8-yearsold on the golf course. I’ve worked with a lot of good high school players, college players and mini-tour players and there are things that he’s already doing that it took them years to learn.”

In less than two years of playing, he has become one of the best young golfers in the world. At one point, he won 13 tournaments in a row. “He doesn’t know what to do if he’s not playing golf,” his mother, Leena, said as Asher hit a few balls nearby. “He gets bored if he’s not here.” It’s that genuine passion for the game, and his willingness to be coached, viera voice CARL KOTALA Blazer said, that make Asher Asher Joseph has been playing golf for less than two years, but the 8-year-old Melbourne resident stand out. has already won the U.S. Kids Golf European Championship in May and finished seventh at the “I want him to keep that U.S. Kids Golf Championships this past August. love (for the game) because that’s what drives him,” older brother, Zubin, out for took to the game right away. The popular Penny Creek Band pumps up the fun with live bluegrass tunes. By Linda Wiggins

The third Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll gets underway Oct. 1 - 15, culminating with the Harvest Festival from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19 at the new Viera Beach at the Holiday Inn MelbourneViera Conference Center. Headlining this exciting event is the popular Penny Creek Band, performing the best in bluegrass music. Businesses host unique, crafted scarecrows that cleverly reflect their business theme along a mapped route across the greater Viera/Suntree area. The public comes to view and vote on the unique creation for the People’s Choice top award and bragging rights for the year. The ’crows will be on silent auction to benefit a charity of the builder’s choice and favorites will be moved to the festival. “The Penny Creek Band has been a favorite at the festival, so we were happy to have them back,” said Jill Gaines, CEO of Bluewater Creative Group, publisher of Viera Voice and Senior Life newspapers and Viera MD and Boomer Guide magazines as well as creator of popular expos and events. “They have a way of

engaging the audience in fun that lifts the entire event as far as sound can carry. You cannot possibly have a bad day in their presence.” The first two weeks of October build up to the grand finale at the festival, with families making the rounds to see the creative crows and putting in their ballots to win great prizes, benefiting the community in a number of ways. “The public loves having fun, free activities and events to enjoy, and it’s wonderful to know that the business you patronize cares about the community, and that your support of it is helping a charity,” Gaines said. A pull-out map centerfold is inserted in this edition of Viera Voice that is also a ballot, showing readers where to go to see the scarecrows and get a secret code as proof. The more scarecrows they enjoy, the more valuable the prizes there are up for grabs when they drop off their ballot at locations around greater Viera. Schools will also create schoolcrows, to be posted at business booster locations along the route for viewing, voting and silent auction. The top three schoolcrows and the top 10 business

crows by popular vote will be moved to the festival for continued silent auction, as well as the three scarecrows that have raised the most money for their charity or school. The crow team to raise the most money will win a matching donation for its charity or school of up to $500, sponsored by Viera Voice. The crows will also be judged for artistic creativity and a trophy given to the top scarecrow and the top schoolcrow. The Harvest Festival is where the public can stroll to see the best of all the scarecrows and schoolcrows all in one place, and enjoy other free activities, such as a harvest maze, pumpkin patch and the Zucchini 500 car race, where children build their own racers from actual aerodynamic green squash with axles and wheels. Along with the Penny Creek Band’s music, an all-foodspumpkin cooking contest, bounce houses, children’s face painting and pumpkin painting are also free, with fun fall foods available for purchase. Viera Pizza marks a ‘Decade of Delicious’ BY ROSEMARY H. LYNN

When Mike Acosta was approached by Naweed Akram, the owner of the Mobil service station on Murrell Road in Viera, to open a pizza parlor inside his store, Acosta was anything but hesitant. He would become the managing partner of Viera Pizza which would offer not only pizzas but delicious salads, Italian pasta dishes, subs and even desserts. His background in the pizza industry gave him a leg up when it came to knowing the business end as well as the customer service requirements of the food trade. Now there are two locations: the original on Murrell Road and the latest, which opened four years

ago on Stadium Parkway and Viera Boulevard. Both locations offer delivery, takeout and dine-in service. But Viera Pizza isn’t just all about food. Acosta is passionate about giving back to the community. “We started the Eat My Crust 5K walk/run in 2012 to benefit the sports program at Viera High School,” he said. “As of May of last year, we have raised $40,000 for the school’s athletic department.” The next Eat My Crust event will be held May 3, 2015 and he encourages people of all ages to participate. Last year there were youngsters as well as senior citizens participating. “Some of the best competitive runners are seniors,” Acosta said. Viera Pizza also offers

catering for graduations, birthday parties and wedding rehearsal dinners. They are moving more into the vending of special events and will cater for occasions anywhere in Brevard County. This will include supporting women’s clubs and groups by offering door prizes and coupons as well as food. Acosta is particularly proud of the fact that his business has not increased its prices in seven years. They have no delivery charges and as they continue to grow, he hopes to open more locations. As of now, he employees 18 people, including himself. His assistant, Nicole Fry, has been with him for 8 years. Viera Pizza can be reached online at VieraPizza.com or by calling 321-636-7696. VV

Anticipated bazaar benefits Cuba and our own backyard By Linda Wiggins

Award-winning Suntree photographer Chuck Palmer brought back images of severe poverty tinged with hope from last year’s mission trip to Cuba. Suntree United Methodist Church’s 27th annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 1 will support missionaries in the field there, as well as charities that meet the need in SUMC’s own back yard. “We couldn’t help but stare at all the people catching a ride to work in the back of the horsedrawn carriages all crowded together on the little twolane highway,” Palmer said. Outside the tiny town of Holguin near Guantanamo Bay, where SUMC sister church Iglesia Metodista El Redentor is a beacon of modernity, there are four rural missions steeped in even greater paucity. “Our Suntree United Methodist Church Cuba Missions caravan felt like we were in a time machine traveling back to a civilization, the likes of which none of us had ever seen before.” The bazaar will help

p u p a sports Wr Tigers seek more state titles in cross country

By Carl Kotala

If there is one thing the Holy Trinity boys and girls cross country teams won’t be lacking this season, it’s motivation. With three consecutive state championships to their credit, the boys have the chance to be the first Brevard County team in any sport to bring home four in a row. The girls, meanwhile, have a chance to not only repeat as state champs but also show everyone they are still the state’s best even without their top runner of the previous three seasons. This could, in fact, be the year Holy Trinity accomplishes something it has never done in the past — sweep the team and individual state championships. “The boys’ and girls’ goal

Snowbirds return in time for new golf season By john gulla

The 2013-2014 Viera East Mens Golf Association (VEMA) season has come to a close. Past president Jim Robinson expressed his thanks to the membership for its support throughout this past year. John Gulla, the newlyelected president of VEMA for 2014-2015, asked for the members’ continued support as he and vice president Gary Shiffrin, secretary Bill Hall and William Oakley prepare to assume their positions for the forthcoming golf season. The new board pledges its full effort to satisfy the needs of the club, and plans to include a few surprises along the way. Besides the normal Thursday golf day, VEMA golfers can look forward to the following events during the upcoming golf year: Director’s Cup, VEMA Cup, VEMA-VELGA Scramble, Member-guest, Ryder Cup and VEMA Medal Play with the presentation of the Masters Green Jacket. The annual meeting luncheon, following golf on Oct. 9, officially kicks off the new VEMA golf season. Stay tuned to vemagolf. wordpress.com for details of all upcoming events. VV

for every year he has run cross country at Holy Trinity. “We’ve got a really deep team,” he said. “We still have all the guys from last year that were on the state team, so we still have our core guys. We also have a few new freshmen who have been running really well.” Holy Trinity’s top five boys are quite the family. Andrew Cacciatore is followed by sophomores Trevor Kattenberg, Egan Kattenberg, Michael Wilson and Johnny Cacciatore. The top five girls include Shelby Smith, senior Maleia Storum, sophomore Samantha Folio, junior Sydney Smith and either freshman Chelsea Basford or eighth-graders Sydney Friedel or Maria Goppel. Missing from that list is three-time Class 1A state champion Julie Wollrath, who transferred to Melbourne High for her senior season. Shelby Smith finished ahead of Wollrath at an early season meet hosted

by Astronaut High. It was a personal best for Smith (18:33). “The girls want to prove that we’re not a one-girl team,” Butler said. For her part, Smith said the difference in moving up from No. 2 to No. 1 on the Tigers roster has only been minimal. “I think my motivation was the same last year as it is now, but it is a little different because I feel like your team looks up to you because you’re a No. 1,” she said. “But we all support each other.” With so many titles to their credit already, the Tigers aren’t just chasing another one — they’re chasing history. And from all accounts, both teams have the talent and the depth to make this Holy Trinity cross country season stand out among all the others. “We’ve got as good a shot to win another boys and girls title as we’ve ever had,” Butler said. Viera boys and girls cross country teams on right pace

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Viera High’s boys and girls cross country teams went to a camp for the first time during the offseason. The results of that trip and the hard work they’ve done on their own are really paying off.

five runners. “The goal is to improve our overall standing as a team, to drop our times,” coach Kate Howick said. “We’ve got a big gap between our (No.) 1 and (No.) 2 runner and subsequently our (No.) 3 runner. We’re just trying to close the gaps and get everybody faster. “… We’ve got a lot of new faces. That’s what I’m excited about.” With 30 runners on the roster, the boys have plenty of depth to go with their emerging talents. Shaffer, who ran triathlons during the summer, leads the way for the Hawks, followed by senior Jeremy Dean, sophomore Collin Quigley and seniors Morgan Levine and Ricky Cupoli. The Hawks have altered their schedule a little bit this season so they can get more

exposure running against teams from their district, which includes Centennial, Fort Pierce Central, Martin County, Treasure Coast and Vero Beach. Viera started the season with an average team time of 17:35. Abel said the Hawks would like to get that number down to 17:00 by the time the state meet rolls around. Both teams have put in a lot of time preparing for this season and for the first time in program history, they attended a camp at Appalachian State University during the summer. “They really fell in love with running, so that was pretty cool,” Howick said of her team. “They bonded so well together. I think now they’re going be able to do pretty much anything.” VV

Expectations are always high when it comes to both the Viera High boys and girls golf teams. But this season has a chance to be special. The Viera girls are coming off a second-place finish at last year’s state tournament and, as coach Greg Ford put it, “We’re probably better this year.” Viera’s boys, who had their state tournament dreams smashed with a poor performance in last year’s district tournament, are also back with a deeper, talented roster that has them thinking big, too. “We’ve got to go to states or it’s a failure,” coach Paul Bentley said. “We’ve got to go to states and compete.” Ford’s optimism stems from the return of starters Taylor Rajeski and Samantha Brimhall, plus the addition of Sophie Liu (who moved here from Canada) and freshmen Amber Rivera and Dayna Owens. On Sept. 4, the team shot a program-best 149 in a match against Satellite. “When you look at our top six golfers, from top to bottom, we’re deeper and much more consistent,” Ford said. Viera finished second in the 2009 state tournament only to come back in 2010 and win it all. Rajeski said this year’s group is motivated to do the same thing. “Of course we all want to get back there and, of course, win,” the junior said. “But

we’re taking it match by match. We don’t really think about it every day.” Liu, who moved here from Vancouver, said the transition to playing for Viera has been not only smooth, but fun. “I thought it was going to be hard, but it’s not because everyone on the team is hard working and dedicated,” she said. Senior Nico Gagliardi believes one of the reasons the boys will be much better this season is because a number of teammates have been playing year round and the team is not only better, but more mature. “We learned a lot from last year,” he said. “I think that alone has made our team a lot better.” The Hawks also have a big new addition in freshman Calvin Sierota, who transferred from Holy Trinity. “We had a gap, Calvin just filled it in,” Bentley said. “Not only did he fill it in, but he made us better. We got really good.” Gagliardi, Sierota, junior Brian Rozic and sophomore Tyler Greek are the team’s top four with several players vying for the fifth and sixth spots, including junior Kyle Decenzo and sophomore Mitchell Albright. While reaching the state tournament is the ultimate prize, Gagliardi said the Hawks are trying not to get too far ahead of themselves. “We definitely know we can get there,” he said. “Then once we’re there, we can focus on winning.” V V vieravoice.com

Asher Joseph, right, and his brother, Zubin, played golf for the first time on Father’s Day, 2012. Now, 8-year-old Asher is one of the best junior golfers in the world.

Blazer said. “I don’t ever want this to get where there’s too much pressure, or I’m asking him to do too many things. I want him to have fun and love the game, because that’s what’s gotten him this far.” Asher said his favorite part of golf is putting because “you can make it go in the hole.” Zubin, along with younger sister Anjala, 5, and younger brother Cyrus, 3, can often be found with their brother on the course. The more talkative one of the Joseph children, Zubin has no trouble telling people what his brother would like to be some day. “He wants to be the greatest golf player to walk the Earth.”V V

Suntree school festival a community benefit By Linda Wiggins

Expect some changes in a popular local autumn fair starting with the name: Suntree Elementary Community Fall Festival, set from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. “Community” replaces the word “school” to widen appeal, according to organizers. “We want to attract people from the surrounding residential and business community because it’s a great event that many people can enjoy, but also because the good it does goes way beyond the campus,” said Heather Barlow, new president of the Suntree Elementary PTO, which has

Kickoff held for Florida First LEGO League Special to Viera

Fourth grade teacher Laura Martin spent her summer writing grants, with the goal of starting a LEGO League at Imagine West Melbourne (IWM). On Saturday, Sept. 13, seven student members and their parents attended the Florida First LEGO League kickoff meeting at Merritt Island High School. After the kickoff meeting, students and parents expressed their excitement. “I want to program something now,” said fifthgrader Hannah Tucker. Parent Carmen Tucker said,

“I’m ready to go buy some LEGOs!” Rockwell Collins helped to make this opportunity possible for IWM students by being providing a grant. During the FLL World Class Competition, students will focus on finding more innovative ways to help someone learn something, then work toward a solution to make it a reality. They will also build and program a robot to complete tasks on a predetermined game board. For more information about Florida FIRST LEGO League go to flrobotics.org or call 321768-6200. VV

The problem for most people is that their money is tied up for 7 to 10 years and the returns are subject to caps, meaning if the market returns double-digit gains you may be capped at 3% or 4%.

Cribbage champ credits early start for his winning ways By Linda Wiggins

Is there no one who can challenge Bernie Friedman? The calculating card player is the Space Coast champion at cribbage, a game hundreds of years old that claims many thousands of registered members in more than 1,000 grassroots clubs across the United States. It’s a repeat honor for the Suntree resident, who was also named cribbage champ in 2009 of the Space Coast Peggers Cribbage Club, which meets at 6 p.m. Monday evenings at the All One Family Senior Day Program at 585 N. Courtenay Parkway on Merritt Island. The club name is derived from the fact that in addition to playing cards, players advance their peg around holes in an accompanying wooden scoring board according to the added point totals of cards played. Members play nine games over a span of about 3 ½ hours. “It’s a nice night and it helps the brain,” Friedman said, explaining how points are tallied according to detailed strategy. The year was 1944 and the United States tapped the Merchant Marines to serve under the Coast Guard to protect transport ships that were torpedo fodder in World War II. The official act lowered the age required to join the Merchant Marines from 18 to 16, so Friedman signed up as a volunteer and got an early start to his cribbage career. According to English antiquarian John Aubrey, cribbage was created by the English poet Sir John Suckling in the early 17th century as a derivation of the game

Suntree Rotary picks three ways and three groups to help children with Great Tastes

By Linda Wiggins

The Suntree Rotary Club is taking a systemic approach to helping children in need to become productive adults. It has chosen three charities to benefit from its Saturday, Oct. 11 Great Tastes at Suntree event at Suntree Country Club, where dozens of restaurants will vie for People’s Choice bragging rights and bring their top dishes for attendees to sample while listening to live music and taking part in a variety of games and activities geared to both adults and youngsters. The Children’s Hunger Project, last year’s sole recipient, will again benefit. The Brevard charity

purchases individual servings of ready-to-eat foods and packages them for teachers to place in the backpacks of students they know to be hungry so they may have food during the weekends away from free breakfast and lunches at school. “Of all the approaches you can make to help at-risk children succeed in school and in life, nutrition is the No. 1 key and first step,” said Bob Barnes, a co-founder of the Children’s Hunger Project and full-time volunteer speaker who has made the effort one of the most popular causes among civic groups and church outreach efforts in the Viera/Suntree area and beyond.

“Feeding their hunger can open the door to good behavior and academic achievement, giving them the chance to become lawabiding, productive citizens.” The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida, which has locations in north Melbourne, Mims and Cocoa, is a second tier in the Suntree Rotary approach, helping children with homework, giving them a safe place away from home to hang out in a positive environment, and physical activities to challenge their minds and bodies, according to a Suntree Rotary official. “We are really impressed with what this effort does for our young people,” said Bill Slover, Suntree Rotary

The event also acknowledged Florida Sen. Thad Altman for his efforts to sponsor and support legislation that aides children’s causes supported by Suntree Rotary, which recently helped refurbish the Teen Center at the Temple Terrace Boys & Girls Club south of Suntree. The third charity and the third prong in the Suntree Rotary approach is Promise in Brevard, a community under development in West Melbourne that will be home to residents with developmental disabilities across Brevard, including Suntree and Viera. Promise is up for $14 million in state housing funding for construction in November and is seeking $3 million in donations to launch a series of businesses where young adults will work.

“It’s amazing what a job and a paycheck can do,” said Betsy Farmer, co-founder of Promise with her son Luke, who has Down syndrome. “We have tried in the past to get jobs for our young adults and it failed because there was not sufficient support, and it leads to terrible disappointment and depression. We now know this is the solution.” Promise already operates Promise Treasures Thrift Shoppe at State Road 192 and Wickham Road, run by a bank of unpaid volunteers and paid “future Promisers” so they can “have a real job and feel good about themselves.” Suntree Rotary is seeking businesses to sponsor Great Tastes for $500, which includes 10 tickets to the event. Tickets are $30 each. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to tastesatsuntree.com or call 321-751-4751. VV

children and establish a successful new car dealership. A divorce shattered his dream life, and in 1980 he walked into a Scottsdale, Ariz. pub in search of companionship. He found it at first sight in Carol Harsell, also reeling from a divorce. “We needed each other very badly,” Friedman said. The needle-in-a-haystack find was even more profound since both were rare transplants from New Jersey to the western resort town. The match was as good professionally as it was personally. Harsell ran a dance studio and was in the process of targeting her dance education program to very young children, and faced the

challenge of getting them to the studio. Instead, Friedman suggested taking instruction to pre-schools and other centers where the children already congregated. The result was Kinderdance, now franchised to more than 100 locations in 36 states and five countries. The Friedmans retired and sold the business three years ago. Carol Friedman finally joined Space Coast Peggers at the Sept. 8 meeting. “It’s taken that long to wrap up loose ends with the business, but I love it and I’m advancing quickly,” she said. The game is a very social experience, but with a lot of rules to learn so that each win is accurately earned and each

victory recorded with the American Cribbage Congress for national prizes. Bernie Friedman, 86, is a bronze level player racking up wins in pursuit of silver and gold. He recently earned a jacket from the national level. Now that both Friedmans are free to pursue the pastime, the cribbage champ may have some company after all, not only across the table, but on the club winner board. Scarecrow builders continued from page 1 McRae, Holiday Inn’s sales and marketing assistant. Businesses such as Viera Pizza, Nails in the City, Ace Hardware and others are returning participants. “We did it before. The atmosphere was wonderful and it was a great experience. We like to be involved in the community and to give back when we can. We like knowing that we can help out in the community,” McRae said. Helping the community is the impetus behind Viera Voice’s Scarecrow Stroll and Harvest Festival. “We want to do as much to help local charities as we can. This is why, this year, each business was able to choose its own,” Jill Blue-Gaines said. Holiday Inn’s general manager, Samir Patel sits as chairman on the board at Devereux, a residential provider of child behavioral health, developmental disabilities and child welfare services. “It’s his charity of choice,” McRae said. Robin and Paul Davis, owners of Nature’s Table, said their scarecrow started out for fun and, with their staff, they knew they wanted a scarecrow that reflected their business. “Fruits and vegetables, all natural food, that’s what we’re all about,” Robin Davis said. Maria Otremba, who has worked at the Nature’s Table on Wickham Road for more than 10 years, suggested a scarecrow that looks like Carmen Miranda, then she helped come up with the name, Crowlola, based on the Portuguese Brazilian samba singer. Winnie Henry built Crowlola. “The hard part,” Robin Davis said, “was deciding which charity to support. They were separate things.” They wanted the donations to be as local as possible and they decided on the perfect charity. With only a few telephone calls to the National Kidney Foundation, they created the Maria Otremba

Otremba, who has endured failing kidneys for more than five years, said, “I appreciate them doing this for me.” She started dialysis in 2014. “Why not support someone we know and care about?” Paul Davis said, “We wanted to create the opportunity for other people to know Maria.” “She’s an amazing worker,” Robin Davis said. Going up: Riverview Tower at Suntree will offer office, retail space, eye-popping vistas

By MIKE GAFFEY

Robert Kodsi had a dream of building a high-end office and retail building at U.S. 1 and Suntree Boulevard when he bought the 3.15-acre parcel from Wuesthoff Health Systems in 2006. But the economic downturn put those plans on hold. Now with the economy slowly gaining momentum, Kodsi, a partner at Merritt Island-based Tricon Development of Brevard, is ready to move forward with his vision. Permits are almost complete and groundbreaking is expected to take place within the next few months on Riverview Tower at Suntree, a five-story, 80,000-square-foot building. The project will offer Class “A” retail and office space ranging from 450 square feet to an entire floor, Kodsi said. “It’s going to be unique,” Kodsi said. “It’s going to be a really nice project.” Planned on a natural bluff about 20 feet above U.S. 1, Riverview Tower will live up to its name, providing offices on the top floors with unobstructed views of the Indian River. Its elevated location also will allow for under-

Robert Kodsi will realize his dream of building a high-end office and retail building overlooking the Indian River Lagoon when Riverview Tower at Suntree is completed. ground parking for about 100 vehicles, a unique feature in Brevard, according to Kodsi. “We’re targeting higher-end class tenants who want to be in a prestigious building,” said Kodsi, a Baytree resident and father of three boys. “We also want to accommodate Brevard’s market by providing spaces for all sizes.” Five or six retail businesses will occupy the building’s 12,000-square-foot first floor. “Discussions are under way with several retail and restaurant prospects,” he said. Charine Lewis and Jewel McDonald of JM Real Estate

will market Riverview Tower. “We are happy to work with JM Real Estate, a very wellrespected commercial real estate firm in Brevard County that specializes in Class A product,” Kodsi said. Kodsi originally had plans for a larger building on the site, but opted for a smaller complex two years ago in light of the economic climate at the time and to make the structure more attractive to the area. The result is a building that will feature energyefficient units, two lobbies, elegant common area interiors with first-class finishes, com-

mon area restrooms on each floor, available signage, backup generators and professional in-house property management from Tricon. Many trees at the site will be spared and more will be added, Kodsi said. “We’re giving a conservation easement to the county which will remain untouched,” he said. Tricon, which specializes in oceanfront condominium development from the Space Coast to the Treasure Coast, also is heavily involved with commercial development and management. Kodsi recently inked a deal with Publix to redevelop a 65,000-square-foot shopping center in Osceola County. Tricon plans on handling construction of Riverview Tower. “This is why we’re unique,” said Kodsi, who grew up in Cocoa Beach and graduated from the University of Southern California with a

degree in real estate finance, then returned to Brevard two decades ago to go into business with his father, Maurice. “We are both developer and contractor, which provides an advantage of speed and efficiency.” Location should be a big selling point, Kodsi said. “You’re close to I-95, you’re close to Pineda, close to the courthouse and very central in the county,” he said. “Tricon will move from the Merritt Island office it has occupied since 1979 into the new building and will occupy about 5,000 square feet, Kodsi said. “With the growth of Viera and what’s happening there, I think that this strategically located property can pull in people from all areas of the county,” he said. Greek to Go: Olive Tree Grill offers fresh options, fast By katie parsons

For locals looking for authentic Mediterranean food, and fast, Olive Tree Greek Grill at The Avenue Viera has from-scratch options for people who want to take it to go, or sit down and enjoy it. From gyros to falafel to spinach pie, Olive Tree brings new flavor to the 50-yearold family recipes of owner Michael Kastrinakis. “I always let people know that our food is not just authentic, but it is truly fresh. We don’t make things from a can, or open a bag of lettuce. We buy fresh produce, and make our menu items from scratch,” he said. Olive Tree opened its doors in May and is building up a regular following for dine-in, carry-out and catering. As more people become aware of the location, they are seeing a steady increase in business. “We didn’t want to be inside a closed-off mall. It was important to us to be in an open space, where people shopping could stop in, but

The Kastrinakis family is no stranger to Greek cuisine. The couple ran the successful Old Olive Tree Restaurant in the Village of Patchogue, N.Y., for more than 30 years. That location was a traditional sit-down restaurant that featured generations-old family recipes. Just this year they sold it and decided to

plants. My sister and I had plenty of space to ride our bikes, and pretend to fill up our tanks before heading to a prestigious picnic on the sunny side of the grassy yard. Sometimes when coming back from a morning on the beach, we turned on the hose to wash off the sand and had mud fights. My childhood taught me to love the outdoors and treasure nature. Unfortunately, people have become detached from nature because, as Richard Louv, author of “Last Child in the Woods” and many other bestselling books, puts it, “a lot of people think they need to give up nature to become adults but that’s not true.” Nature and people are deeply connected. “Nature itself is mysterious and brings us out of ourselves. We don’t really understand why nature calms us but we know that we are using all of our senses at the same time. … Nowhere than in nature do kids use their senses in such a stimulated way.” We need nature. We need it not only for being the source

of our survival, but to live well. At the same time, nature needs us. We need to be stewards of the environment and protect nature not only for its beauty and calming effects, but for its value to us as a species, for our own sake. And we can do that. Everyone can do that! From kids to adults, every action counts. During the summer, I met a third grader who changed the recycling habits in her neighborhood just by putting a sign on the neighborhood’s Dumpster door. Lily is her name. She converted her observations into action; she took a step to help nature and it paid off. Lily will be sharing her story on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the fourth annual 3Rs and Beyond Family Festival, an event that brings families together to connect with nature and celebrate sustainable living. The festival will be at POW/MIA Park on U.S.1 (north of Pineda Ave. Cswy) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is free and open to the public. If you would like to meet Lily, that is your chance.

People like Lily are an inspiration. They are true stewards of the environment. Through selfless actions we are able make a difference locally and to touch some lives while helping our community so we can all live better. Actions like those motivate others to do something too; they spring people to action in a domino effect. It may sound crazy, but the more we do, the more we want to do because we see how far out we can reach. That was the long answer. As for the short answer, well, I took the long turn but in the end it comes down to our needs. Nature needs us and we need nature. Protecting and caring for the environment is really a matter of self-preservation. To work on anything that helps the environment is a mission and a life-time commitment. Somebody needs to take that on and lead the way. Lily is one of them and so am I. VV

Sales rise after Viera entrepreneur jumps into ‘Shark Tank’ and Perfect Parchment, pre-cut parchment paper for cake pans and cookie sheets. “You see about nine minutes,” Rensing said of the appearance. “We were out there for almost two hours doing our pitch, so there’s a whole lot that you don’t see that doesn’t make it to air.” The Rensings sought $75,000 for a 25 percent stake in the company. Three panelists opted out, but the couple found themselves in a bidding war between Corcoran and FUBU clothing founder Daymond John. Both offered $75,000 for a 40 percent stake, but the Rensings went with Corcoran, who added a 5 percent royalty fee. The deal fell apart backstage, Rensing said. “We didn’t close a deal, which is all for the better,” he said. “Just because somebody’s giving you money doesn’t always necessarily mean

Business has been booming for Daniel Rensing, CEO of The Smart Baker, after he and his wife, Stephanie, appeared on TV’s “Shark Tank” in 2012. for the website, figure out what we’re going to charge for things,” he said. “So there was a lot of work that had to get crammed into a month and a half without knowing anything about the baking industry.” The Rensings’ next product came along as they were preparing for their wedding. After the couple had decided to make their popular homemade cupcakes instead of having a wedding cake, Rensing created a multi-tiered tower to display the treats. The tower became another hit on Etsy. Over the objections of his new bride, Rensing, a fan of “Shark Tank,” then sent an email about their business to the show without telling her, and quickly forgot about it. “Next thing you know, I’m on my way to dinner at my parents’ house and I get a

phone call from the California area code,” Rensing said. “I pick up the phone and it was the casting director for “Shark Tank.” Stephanie asked ‘Who is that?’ I said ‘Nobody, it’s work.’ Then she realizes I’m not walking into the house and I’m pacing in the driveway like a crazy person, semi-shaking. I had to reveal what I did.” After nearly a year of nervewracking preparations, the Rensings finally got the call from ABC. “We had 18 hours notice to get our things together, get on a plane and get to California,” Rensing said. “We were freaking out.” After waiting five days in a hotel room, the Rensings made their “Shark Tank” appearance. They used three of their products in their pitch: the Cheat Sheet Apron, the 5 Tier Round Cupcake Tower

Swimming with television’s sharks has been good for Daniel Rensing’s business. Rensing, 29, founder and chief executive officer of The Smart Baker, shared his experiences from his March 2012 appearance on ABC’s “Shark Tank” during a Viera Means Business meeting Sept. 11 at Art Gallery of Viera. Rensing and his wife, Stephanie, manufacture and distribute baking accessories at their Rockledge business. The Rensings of Viera sought $75,000 in their business pitch before five wealthy panelists, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Although a deal struck with real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran later fell through, the television exposure sent their sales soaring, Rensing told the crowd of 50. “By the end of March (2012) in our online sales, we did more than we did the previous year,” Rensing recalled. “It was great for us. It transformed us from a garage-based e-commerce business.” Rensing comes from an entrepreneurial family. His grandfather started Rockledge-based manufacturer Renco Electronics in 1955. “I grew up in family business from day one and I think that’s really the path I wanted to take in my own life,” he said. After Rensing and his high school sweetheart moved from New York to Brevard in 2003, he obtained a degree in computer graphics and design from Keiser University and launched a printing and design business. Then in 2009, the couple got the idea for The Smart Baker. Both had spent lots of time baking treats for family members since they were in high school, and scaling up recipes to feed relatives and converting measurements to figure out ingredients would grow frustrating. So Location Rensing created an apron for his wife with measurement conversions printed upside down for easy reading. They first placed their product, the Cheat Sheet Apron, on e-commerce website Etsy. “Two weeks later, I get a phone call from Food Network Magazine, saying ‘Hey, we came across your apron online and we’d love to do a feature,’ ” Rensing said. “I thought it was a joke.” In its Christmas 2009 issue, the magazine listed the apron as one of its top 10 must-have kitchen items, Rensing said. As sales rose, “we quickly had to come up with a business name

New ways to solve cat behavior problems StatePoint

From inappropriate marking to excessive meowing to scratching, a misbehaving cat can cause disruption to your home. Unfortunately, behavior problems are the number one reason for pet euthanasia, resulting in the death of approximately 15 million pets annually, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

But not all these bad behaviors are your pet’s “fault.” Stress, caused by a variety of factors, can contribute to these issues. After visiting a veterinarian

to rule out any physical causes for your feline’s follies, take steps to encourage good behavior and decrease stress in your cat’s life. “You don’t need to resort to drastic measures to stop a cat’s behavioral issues,” says Caryn Stichler, vice president of marketing for Sergeant’s Pet Care Products. “There are a number of ways to create a calm, stress-free environment for your pet, including using pheromonebased products.” If your cat’s stress is causing you stress, here are a few steps you can take to change your pet’s behavior: Litter box: Is your kitty’s use of his litter box unreliable? Make sure you’re keeping it clean and changing the litter on a regular basis. Don’t relocate the box. Animals, like people, form habits and can be stressed out by change. Noise: If you’re the host

with the most, be mindful of the consequences. Loud noises and a room full of strangers can add stress to your pet’s life. Take steps to limit the burden by never blasting music and ensuring your pet has access to water, a litter box and food in the less trafficked areas of your home. Be proactive: More than two million cat owners have used a calming product on their pet. If your pet’s behavioral problems are triggered by travel, thunderstorms, fireworks or new social situations, consider a collar for your cat that’s been scientifically proven to reduce or eliminate such behaviors. For example, Sergeant’s Vetscription Calming Collar for Cats mimics the pheromone that the mother cat produces to calm and reassure and calm her kittens. Pheromones are chemical substances used

for communication between members of a species. Good for all ages and breeds, the pheromone calming collar helps cats feel safe and secure. More information can be found at sergeants.com. Comfortable space: Make sure your cat’s living space is not just a place to survive, but a place to thrive. Cats love to observe the world around them, so make sure your kitty has access to windows. Be sure to provide your cat with plenty of toys and spend some quality time together each day as mental and physical stimulation are important Remember, behavioral problems aren’t seasonal — they affect pets year round. Take steps to reduce stress in your pet’s life and utilize a calming collar to keep your cat happy and comfortable. VV

Young Eagles flight rally scheduled for Oct. 18 Special to Viera Voice

Young people ages 8 to17 will have a chance to take to the skies on Saturday, Oct. 18 as Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 724 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at Merritt Island Airport. The rally is part of the EAA Aviation Foundation’s Young Eagles Program, created to get more young people interested in aviation. Volunteer EAA pilots had a goal of providing one million young people an airplane ride by the 100th Anniversary of Flight, Dec. 17, 2003. To date more than 1,800,000 Young Eagles have experienced the thrill of flight since 1992, including 6370 at Merritt Island Airport. Free airplane rides are just part of the flight rally. The

pilots hope to build one-toone relationships between pilots and young people, giving a new generation a chance to learn more about possibilities that exist in the world of aviation. Pilots at the event will also explain more about their airplanes, allowing young people to discover how airplanes work and how pilots ensure safety before every flight. All pilots and planes are certificated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Following the flight, each young person will receive a certificate making him or her an official Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wis. The Logbook is also accessible on

the internet at youngeagles. org. Young people and their parents attending the flight rally on Oct. 18, 2014 are asked to come to the large hangar at the end of Airport Road, two miles south of State Road 520 on S. Courtney Parkway. Registration will start at 8:30 a.m. and will close at noon. Flights will begin at 9 a.m. A parent or guardian must sign a permission form for each young person. No reservations are required or accepted. Young Eagles will fly in first come, first flown order. Flights will last approximately 20 minutes. Additional information about EAA, the EAA Aviation Foundation and Young Eagles is available at eaa.org. For more information, call 321-266-7410 or 321-4525847 and leave a message. VV
