Family honors matriarch's 100th with Valentine’s Day Bash BY KATIE PARSONS

VIERA VOICE Jill Gaines

Suntree resident Barbara Facciobene Naples Burt has been a resident of the Space Coast since 1994.

Perhaps the key to longevity is warm weather and living close to family. On Valentine’s Day, Suntree resident Barbara Facciobene Naples Burt will celebrate her 100th birthday with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren nearby. An invitationonly event is planned for Feb. 12 at the Suntree Country Club where loved ones from as far as California will celebrate the milestone. Entertainment will be provided by Hot Cocoa, a trio of octogenarians who play songs from the 1930s and 1940s. “The best way I can describe my mom is that she lives, laughs and loves her family and friends,” her only child Kathy Cuccaro said. Born Barbara Facciobene in Youngstown, Ohio in 1917, she grew up with six siblings. Her brother Frank Facciobene is also alive and lives in West Melbourne. Widowed in 1964 when husband Dominic Naples died, she married Donald Burt three years later and moved just south of Cleveland to Campbell, Ohio.

Some people name their cute little dogs Bingo. Some people say it to mean exactly right or you hit the nail on the head. These are such nice, positive things associated with the name Bingo. You don’t hear of many crime family hitmen named Bingo do you? How many prize fighters, football stars or heavy equipment operators do you know named Bingo? None, right? Butch or Rocky maybe, but never Bingo. So how come the game called Bingo can be so hazardous to your health and reputation, especially if you’re very lucky. It’s just a game right? Those are always fun. These games usually are held at nice, safe places like a church or sometimes fraternal organizations. People that play Bingo walk in the door as some of the nicest, sweetest people you ever want to meet. Even the equipment they use sounds harmless. Their weapon (marker) is called a dauber. Other items used in this sweet game are pingpong balls and little cards that look like a tic-tac-

toe game on steroids. Come on now. What could possibly happen? When the game begins, a miracle happens as 200 people go totally silent. It’s like someone hit the mute button on the TV. No talking, coughing, sneezing, stomach growling or loud exhaling. The only sound allowed is the one person who’s playing with the pingpong balls, which keep popping out of what looks like grandma’s vacuum cleaner in reverse. The only special skill you need for this game is to be able to pay attention and hold your breath for 10 minutes at a time. Everything moves along just fine until somebody says that special, otherwise harmless word, Bingo. Oh my gosh! The place erupts with anger, nastiness, irate people making comments about you who were just smiling and saying hello minutes earlier. You suddenly find yourself dodging verbal daggers, then you are quickly visited by someone who looks like a security guard in real life who rips the card from your hand and reads out the numbers. And, if you got one number wrong you will need a police escort to get out of the place. Fear not. The noise only lasts until the caller says “next game.” Ah, silence again. And if you win again, should you say that word? Bingo! Good luck. SL Dr. Sammy

Residents take a shine to Space Coast solar co-op SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

More than 65 homeowners have signed up since representatives from the League of Women Voters of the Space Coast and Florida Solar United Neighborhoods (FL SUN) hosted a press conference Oct. 24 encouraging Brevard County homeowners to go solar. “FL SUN is a new solar co-op program that offers homeowners who register discounted ways to add solar power to homes,” said Lorraine L. Koss, LWV Space Coast member and coordinator for the project. The group is celebrating another solar victory, this one the defeat of Amendment 1 on the Nov. 8 ballot that actually penalized solar homeowners rather than benefit them, as the utilitybacked measure's wording appeared. Solar co-ops provide

bulk discounts — up to 20 percent — for a group of homeowners who are interested in purchasing solar panels. As part of a solar co-op, citizens benefit from the educational process and each participant signs his or her own contract with the installer, and everyone gets the discount. All homeowners who reside in Brevard County are eligible to participate in the co-op. FL SUN Space Coast partners include the Brevard Federation of Teachers, City of Satellite Beach, Rockledge Gardens, Space Coast EV Drivers, The Green Marketplace, Turtle Coast Sierra Club, Unitarian Universalist Church of Brevard and WFIT-FM 89.5. VV For more information, go to FLSUN.org/SpaceCoast, call 703-201-8811 or email Lorraine.Koss@gmail.com.

Young Hawks showing improvement on the mat BY CARL KOTALA

More muscle. More speed. Better stamina. Those were all areas where Viera High junior Gio Allen thought he had gotten better coming into his second year of wrestling. But the real test came in his first match of the season when he faced a Melbourne High wrestler who had pinned him last year … and Allen won the match 8-1. “It was a realization that, ‘whoah, I’ve gotten that much better,’’’ Allen said. 285-pound weight class — and he certainly is off to a good start. At press time, Allen was 14-0 and coming off a championship at the Space Coast Viper Duals, where he went 8-0. “Gio has a chance to qualify for states,” Viera coach Jim Gentile said. “He weighs right at 275. He’s a strong kid, technically sound and this is only his second year wrestling.” Allen, who was an offensive lineman on the Hawks’ district championship football team, credited some of his improvement in wrestling to the work he put

in during the winter break with former Viera wrestlers. Because he has good upper and lower body strength, Allen already was solid in the neutral and bottom positions. This year, he has tried to get better on working from the top position and has obviously been getting results. With only three returning wrestlers who saw significant action last season, four first-year wrestlers and several holes where they have to forfeit because they don’t have anyone in the weight class, the Hawks are admittedly in a rebuilding year. Senior co-captain Jonathan Conlin (152 pounds) went 7-1 at the Space Coast Viper Duals while junior Jackson Allen (160) went 6-2 and co-captain Lou Fox (120) went 5-3. Other key wrestlers for the Hawks this season are junior Andy Saraka (195 pounds), sophomore David Akouka (145), sophomore Samantha Perez (106) and freshman Gavin Glover (138). If there is one weight class where the Hawks won’t have any trouble finding wrestlers, it’s at 220 pounds where Gentile can have his pick among Cade Van Wart, Gavin Roarke, Jacob Light and Nathan Mulberry, who went 5-3 at the Viper Duals. Viera will host this year’s Class 2A, District 13 Tournament on Feb. 13. This year’s state tournament is set for March 3 and 4 at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. With so many young wrestlers on the roster, the Hawks definitely have the potential for a bright future. “We have a lot of young people that need to learn a little more,” Allen said. “But I think if they come back next year, we’d have a pretty good team.” VV

Duran will host fourth Pink Ribbon Classic BY CARL KOTALA

It’s an event that is both unique and special … and on Feb. 25, it will be back for a fourth straight year. The Duran Golf Club and the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) have partnered again to host the Pink Ribbon Classic. “It’s a unique event because it’s very lady friendly, but guys are welcome to play as well,” said Duran head golf pro Matt Morrison. “We have ladies only divisions, men’s only divisions and we have mixed divisions, so everybody can compete.” Proceeds from the event will help support the American Cancer Society. Duran will donate its portion from the event to help a member of the local community who is battling cancer. Last year’s recipient, Aubrey Sullivan of Port St. John, recently had a clean PET scan and was able to have her chemotherapy port removed in early November. She’s back playing volleyball and has maintained a 4.0 GPA in the Viper Accelerated Program at Space Coast Junior/Senior High School. This year’s event, which will be played under a fourperson golf scramble format, will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Players are encouraged to wear pink. There will be on-course wine and craft beer tasting stations along with several hors d’oeuvres stations.

Viera’s Dave Bonnar and his doubles partner, Russ Reinhard, have developed good communication skills during the past five years of playing together in the Space Coast League. Now, the two men are heading back to the National Senior Games for the second time after qualifying at a tournament held in Tarpon Springs in December. The Samford University Tennis Complex in Birmingham, Ala. will be the host site for their competition, which will run from June 3 to 6. Bonnar, 82, and Reinhard, 84, will play in the men’s doubles 80-plus division, which is one of nine age divisions in the tennis portion of the competition. The Senior Games, which are held every two years, will run from June 2 to 15. It will feature competition in 19 different sports, including tennis, pickleball, track and field, archery, horseshoes,

Nebraska family doesn't take Florida's amenities for granted BY LINDA WIGGINS

Up to a dozen golf carts sit waiting for their passengers each day out front of Suntree Elementary School, but dad Travis Anderson rolls up on four wheels with a different mode of transportation for daughter Alexa, 6, another skateboard tucked under his arm. After just two weeks, the younger natural athlete mastered many of the moves and the pair inspired the rest of the family into joining them, with skateboards of their own arriving for Christmas. “It just seemed like the thing to do around here,” said Anderson, a new-ish Suntree resident. “My wife and I grew up in Nebraska and there is no pavement to skate on, just dirt, gravel and farms.” The family moved to Suntree three years ago, stopping off in Peoria, Ill. for two years for Anderson's first job since getting his master's degree in health care. Natalie and Travis met as students at the University of Nebraska in 2008, married in 2009 and will celebrate eight years this summer. Travis moved the family here to take a job at Holmes Regional Medical Center as a perfusionist, working the heart-lung machine for open

and Charlee will follow into preschool. While Anderson works outside the home, Natalie toils inside as the momager, focusing on organizing the modeling and acting careers for everyone in the family, requiring much toil on the road locally and across Central Florida. The Andersons are a poster family for everything Suntree/Viera has to offer, and they never take a moment for granted. Both were state-level champion athletes in their respective sports and now focus their efforts on developing their children's athletic prowess. “It's a great area for families,” Travis Anderson said. “I have talked to some people who lived here and they called it Mel-boring. I've never been bored. Plenty to do, plenty of activities for the kids to do. In addition to gymnastics and other extracurricular activities you can do anywhere, they get lots of natural amenities, the Indian River Lagoon, close to the beach, surfing, swimming

and golf year round.” Travis and Alexa won first place in 2015 at the Suntree Country Club tournament for first place Father Daughter Team. Grandpa Don Schaller in Cocoa Beach has a canoe, so the family goes out on the canals and explores the islands. For even more excitement, there is Central Florida an hour's drive away. “We go over, have SeaWorld passes, Disney. It's literally everything we could want to do. It's like we're on a permanent vacation. We go home to Nebraska for visits, but the vacation doesn't start until we get back home.” The family is growing on the installment plan. Alexa was born in Nebraska, Brooklyn was born in Illinois and Charlee was born in Melbourne. “That's practically international where we come from,” Anderson said. “We'll be keeping Suntree Elementary in business for many years to come.” VV

In the famous words of Dr. Seuss: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. The public is welcome to participate and the race starts at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, March 4. The course begins and finishes at the school. The race coincides with National Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday. local schools and libraries. During the first two years, the race had more than 600 runners. This year, race director and Manatee PTO president Nicky Hensley hopes for more than 700. In addition to donating the books locally, the proceeds from the race will go toward capital projects at the school such as installing permanent shade fixtures on outdoor play areas. Some estimates for the shade structures top $120,000, according to Hensley. “We encourage all fitness levels to come and enjoy the run. We have kids as young as 5, and people in their 80s out on the course having a great time,” Hensley said. Age group awards will be given out and a post-race celebration will take place at the school. htacademy.org. The deadline for applications is March 1. Holy Trinity Lower School students also will have a new program debuting next fall which will be known as ASAP — Advanced STEAM Academic Program — for gifted students who already are working beyond their grade level. “Mr. Landi always talks about kids having angular talents and this program is going to meet the needs of those students who excel and are naturally talented in mathematics and science and perhaps have even been tested in engineering and coding and other aspects of STEAM,” said Catherine Koos, head of Holy Trinity’s Lower School. In order to qualify for ASAP, students must have excellent grades (an A average) and standardized test scores in mathematics or science in the 95th percentile or higher. A teacher’s recommendation also is required and after completing the application process, there will be an additional placement test in mathematics and writing along with an interview for potential candidates. Academics Program is May 1. Students who complete ASAP will have an educational leg up when they get to the upper campus for middle and high school that will only help open the doors to more academic advancement. “We have 28 advance placement classes at the upper school, so they’re not going to run out of course work to take,” Koos said. “In addition to all AP calculus classes, they’ve got AP statistics and physics and chemistry. They’ll have lots of things to choose from. “There are also all of these

engineering classes, some of which haven’t even been taught yet. They’ll be taught for the first time this fall.” If ASAP gets the same kind of community reaction as the Academic Merit Scholarship program, it will surely be a hit. The school already is seeing an uptick in local business and corporate donations since the academic scholarship program was introduced last year. Landi has introduced a number of new academic programs on the elementary, middle school and high school levels since arriving at Holy Trinity last year to help elevate the curriculum. With that in mind, he wants to promote the school’s highlevel academic standing on both campuses. “There will be no other program as good as this program,” Landi said. “Meeting those individual needs and accelerating those kids with angular talents will be one of the things that we do. “We’ve done it to some extent. Now, we have a program that will really blossom.” VV

Viera students learning how to develop real-world business plans BY CARL KOTALA

Students in Viera High’s Academy of Business and Finance are getting a firsthand look at what it’s like to start their own business and possibly earn a scholarship to Florida Tech for their efforts. More than 100 students from across Brevard County will take part in the Junior Achievement “Be Entrepreneurial” Business Plan Challenge being held this month. The first round of the competition will take place Feb. 22 at Florida Tech with the finalists presenting their business plan to a panel of judges at the Cocoa Playhouse on Feb. 23. Think of it as the high school version of the popular TV show “Shark Tank.” “They have to have a business plan, like they would have to have if they were going into business as an adult,” said Viera High Business and Finance teacher Stacey Gammella. “They need to explain all the financials, the marketing, the advertising and the promotion of that product. They have a power point presentation that they make for the judges. They need to do a 2-minute commercial which they would sell to audiences to buy the product

and a separate 2-minute commercial which is a videotape of their pitch to the judges (to convince them) to invest in their company.” First prize is a $10,000 scholarship to Florida Tech for each member of the business group (two to four students) that is renewable for four years as long as they attend the school. There is also a $2,500 check for the winning team that can be used however the students decide. Viera High took first and

second place — as well as honorable mention — at last year’s event. Senior Collin Quigley, who was part of that secondplace team along with Valeria Villanueva and Mariana Castellon, will be back to present an improved version of their PraVita Bands product. The bands are designed for use on college campuses so that a student who feels they are in danger can contact their school’s police force. “What we’re doing is

Start Here. Go Anywhere.

revolutionizing the blue box system on college campuses, because right now they’re very expensive to maintain and a lot of colleges are (doing) away with them because they’re expensive,” Quigley said. “They’re going to an app. But phone battery is very limited.” PraVita Bands can fix that. “It has a little activator inside of it and when it’s activated, it goes into a GPS system which connects to the college campus security and

gives them the location of where you are so they can go to you.” Senior Ryan Stofflet and his friends Eric Eraso, Addison Goodwin and Jonathan Orriss are all avid fisherman. So naturally, their group, known as “Green Shore,” has come up with a unique idea for a potentially big market — a hybrid boat engine. “As a fisherman in high school, you’re always thinking of ways to save money,” Stofflet said. “I have a boat and gas is really expensive for a boat, so I just thought one day, wouldn’t there be an easier way?” Over at Atlas Vision, seniors Mitchell Shoff and Brandon Delli Santi have come up with a useful tool for runners packed into a pair of glasses. “They make watches nowadays that tell you your pace and the distance you’ve traveled,” Shoff said. “What we’re going to do is take all the information that a runner needs and we’re going to put it in a heads-up display on glasses. “A heads-up display is a very real technology. We’re just trying to apply that so a runner doesn’t have to break stride to look down at their watch.” Look for competition results at vieravoice.com. VV

Inaugural Run Run Santa 1 Mile sells out, features 500 running Santas BY KATIE PARSONS

David Kilgore and Kaitlin Donner were the winners in the inaugural Run Run Santa 1 Mile. Kilgore, a 25-year-old resident of Palm Bay, was the top male runner with a time of 4 minutes, 46.7 seconds. Donner, a 27-year-old Melbourne resident, was the top female runner in 5:02.5. The inaugural race, which took place at 7:30 a.m. Christmas Eve, was a slamdunk success according to race director Brittany Streufert who said the 500-participant limit sold out. Included in the $30 registration fee were shortsleeved Santa outfits. Mike Acosta and Viera Pizza, who also conduct the popular Eat My Crust 5K in May, were the sponsors.

The race started with an Invitational Mile for elite runners. To qualify, male runners needed a sub 18-minute 5K and female runners needed a sub 20-minute 5K. The general race started two minutes later. The course ran from Stadium Parkway at the corner of Veteran's Way and ran south, turning right onto Judge Fran Jamieson Way and right on Breslay Drive to the finish line. “Run Run Santa 1 Mile is the only road race in Brevard County devoted exclusively to the Mile. We picked this distance because recent studies show the Mile is the ideal fitness distance for everybody, regardless of age or ability. We knew it could have great appeal to families all around, especially when everyone would be dressed

like Santa Claus,” Streufert said. “Calvary Chapel was a great host location and we were proud to present them with a donation on Christmas Eve to their 412 Youth Ministry Missions Outreach,” Streufert said. The second annual race is already scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017. Registration opens on July 1, with a goal of at least 1,000 runners. “If last year is any indication to its popularity, you better mark your calendars to get registered this summer,” Streufert said. Artistry at Viera at 2560 Judge Fran Jamieson Way will feature 259 units ranging in size from one to three bedrooms. BY MIKE GAFFEY

A luxury apartment community is under construction within walking distance of the Viera Government Center and Viera High School. Artistry at Viera at 2560 Judge Fran Jamieson Way will feature 259 apartments ranging in size from one to three bedrooms, said Gray Schaufler, who is in charge of land acquisitions for Davis Development, an Atlanta-based multifamily housing developer overseeing the project and managing the lease-up. “Artistry is going to provide several resortstyle amenities areas that cater to the market,” Schaufler said of the petfriendly, three-story gated community just east of the Brevard County School Board and adjacent to Viera’s 180-foot-tall cell phone tower and flagpole. “There are elevators in all the buildings, which is another convenient, luxury feature.”

Other amenities include breezeway attached garages for a limited number of tenants, WiFi at the pool sundeck and at common areas, stainless steel appliances, custom glass showers with rain shower heads, walk-in closets, granite countertops, a car care area, a gym and yoga room, a dog park and an Xbox play area, said Carissa Brogdon, marketing director for Davis Development. One-bedroom apartments will range from 661 square feet to 984 square feet. Two-bedroom apartments will range from 1,105 square feet to 1,279 square feet of living space and three-bedroom apartments will range from 1,368 square feet to 1,471 square feet. The community should open in the fall, according to a statement from The Viera Company, Viera’s master developer. “The Viera Company is very proud to announce a new quality and luxury

multi-family rental option within the heart of the master-planned community of Viera,” Todd J. Pokrywa, senior vice president of land use planning & development for The Viera Company, said in the statement. “Artistry at Viera will be close to some of Viera’s major employers, such as Brevard County Government and the School District. Residents will also be within walking distance of key community destinations including The Avenue Viera and the Viera Regional Park.” Schaufler said rent prices have not yet been established but should be competitive with the market. True battles often are fought at the local level BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth

to light, start a dialogue and propose solutions, especially at the local government level — where we can most immediately see and feel any impact. The audience appreciated that insight, an insight that LWVSC has practiced for many years through efforts at the local level of government. The LWVSC also effectively applies the principle of joining forces in winning those fights. Take the expansion of solar energy for the example. Since group rates are normally better, the LWVSC created a local solar coop (flsun.org/spacecoast/) that residents can join to increase their buying power and save up to 20 percent off the cost of a solar system. That increases the chance of expanding solar in Brevard and to date, 150 members joined the co-op. Others are invited to join since the LWVSC is accepting new members until Feb. 28. For information, check their website. The New York Times also identified the involvement in local government as being fundamental for pressing issues that need to be addressed right where we live, like climate change and the mitigation of its effects. They

report that “over the last two decades, cities and states have been able to take substantive action. They have fortified themselves against rising seas, switched to renewable sources of energy, expanded mass transit and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.” Local officials took charge of addressing the problem and are determined to continue doing so “regardless of what they see from Washington.” “Cities are where climate change problems originate, and therefore that’s where the solutions are,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City to The New York Times. Citizen’s Climate Lobby (CCL) understands that, too. With currently 365 chapters and the goal of having chapters in every congressional district, CCL works to “empower citizens to connect with and influence their members of Congress and to spread the idea that each one of us can address climate change.” (citizensclimatelobby. org). Gaining support from local leaders help take solutions to Washington, CCL’s chapters work to build healthy relationships and gain support at home as well. As in the film, we find that often to change things for the better we need to “fight city hall” or at least deeply interact with it as an active citizen and sometimes, like Mary Jackson in “Hidden Figures,’’ we have no choice but to be the first.VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@3RsAndBeyond.org.

This past weekend, we took our daughter Melissa to see “Hidden Figures,” a powerful film based on the true story of three African-American women mathematicians at NASA. The film covered their roles in the space race and some of the challenges they faced back in the 1960s as black women. My daughter, who at first didn’t want to go, rated the movie 9.9 out of 10; not far from the 93-percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes. This was indeed an inspirational story — the kind that gets us motivated to keep working with passion to make the changes important to our own life and our own future. It showed the importance of standing up for what is right and finding ways to be heard and be counted — in the workplace, in the local schools as well as in the local towns. The film conveyed a message that former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham came to share with almost 200 people in Cape Canaveral at the signing of his book "America, the Owner’s Manual: You Can Fight City Hall — and Win" at an event organized by the League of Women Voters of the Space Coast (LWVSC). Graham identified three essential requirements to “fight city hall and win” that were also depicted in “Hidden Figures”— passion, skills and persistence. Co-author Chris Hand went over practical tips documented in the book to help citizens bring their issues

Passco Cos. of Irvine, Calif. recently acquired the Class A multifamily property at 2439 Casona Lane from Atlanta-based Pollack Shores Real Estate Group for $50.25 million. Completed in 2016, the Space Coast’s first new apartment complex in eight years comprises eight buildings with one-, two- and three-bedroom units ranging in size from 624 square feet to 1,380 square feet. Units feature Mediterranean architecture and interiors, large balconies, luxury plank flooring, large kitchen islands, granite countertops, under mount sinks and pendant lighting. Colonnade Shops bring more businesses to a booming commercial strip BY MIKE GAFFEY

Work has started on the first phase of the Viera Colonnade Shops just north of The Avenue Viera, and tenants already have been found for more than half of its available retail space. Mattress 1 One, Charlie Graingers, Tropical Smoothie and Great Clips are among the businesses set to move into the 28,000-square-foot complex in Viera’s thriving commercial corridor along Lake Andrew Drive. “It certainly is a strong growth area out there,” said Joe Poirier, senior broker/ associate with JM Real Estate, which is leasing space at the complex. “There’s good demand.” Viera Colonnade Shops are just north of Ethan Allen and contiguous to The Avenue Viera and Marketplace Viera, open-air shopping centers covering more than 700,000 square feet. The buildings will be close to Lake Andrew Drive for

enhanced visibility with parking for 228 vehicles in the rear, Poirer said. The rear access road will connect with The Avenue Viera and all retail shops and restaurants to the south. Three buildings will have space for outdoor patios, according to site plans. “It’s going be a real nice addition,” Poirier said. Tenants are a mix of retail shops and restaurants. So far, tenants that already have signed leases are: • Charlie Graingers, a Wilmington, N.C.-based restaurant franchise offering more than a dozen styles of hot dogs, as well as Carolinastyle beef brisket and barbecue, housemade sandwiches and brisket baked beans. Charlie Graingers has more than 450 franchise commitments in seven states. The location will be the second in Brevard County, with the first restaurant preparing

for its grand opening sometime in April at Brevard Medical City in Suntree. The Suntree location at 6555 N. Wickham Rd., Building D-101, will be 2,192 square feet with seating for 58 customers • First Watch, a Bradenton-based breakfast, brunch and lunch café. Named the top family dining restaurant by Consumer Reports in 2016, First Watch offers traditional favorites such as pancakes, omelets, sandwiches and salads, along with specialty items such as Quinoa Power Bowls, Avocado Toast and the Chickichanga — whipped eggs with white-meat chicken, chorizo sausage, onion, avocado, green chilies and Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, wrapped in a flour tortilla. First Watch claims it’s the nation’s

A New Approach to Hip Replacement Kenneth Sands, MD – First Choice Medical Group

Rediscover the life you had before hip pain If you are considering hip replacement surgery, you may be interested in an innovative technique called the Anterior (or front) Approach. The Anterior Approach for hip replacement surgery may allow you to be up on your feet and back to your active life faster than with traditional hip replacement. Thanks to a small incision made at the front of your hip joint, rather than the typical side or back incision, you may have a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, less postoperative pain, immediate stability of the hip after surgery and a lower risk for dislocation. So you can get back in the game faster. There are potential risks with any surgery and results can vary. Recovery takes time and depends on factors like activity level, weight and age. If you would like to learn more about this innovative technique, contact:

Spinning tales about woodpeckers

Pet of the Month

VIERA VOICE Photo

Researchers have studied woodpeckers to improve the safety of helmets.

Woodpeckers are commonly colored black, white, red and yellow. Males often flaunt more prominent red, sometimes yellow, head markings. Pairs tend to appear similar and are monogamous. The undulating flight pattern usually displays interspersed flapping and gliding with folded wings against the body instead of extended like many birds. Depending on species, some live to be 11 years old, larger species as long as 30 years. Drumming (special tapping sounds) attracts mates and establishes territories. Since woodpeckers chirp and chatter but do not sing, they drum on resonant objects such as hollow trees or even downspouts, trash cans and stop signs. Certainly, these arboreal birds prefer wooded habitats. Nests are shielded cavities, typically excavated in dead trees (snags) or trees with hollowed or softened centers (heartrot). Utility poles or roof shingles also accommodate nests. Desert species drill holes in tall cacti. Actually, it takes about a month for nest construction. At times, bold starlings overtake woodpecker holes. Obviously, woodpeckers are relentless percussionists. A single woodpecker pounds possibly 20 times per second, 12,000 taps per day, with its chisel-like beak. Therefore, the evolutionary design of the woodpecker avoids concussions. The reinforced skull is a shock absorber; the hyoid bone apparatus rigidly supports the tongue and wraps around the skull — a safety harness; limited space protectively restricts brain movement; the beak has an overbite which diverts impact stress; powerful neck muscles and a flexible spine are invaluable. Indeed, research for helmets is influenced by the woodpecker. Behavioral factors also prevent brain damage: glancing blows rather than direct hits; releasing mostly linear pecks lessen head twisting; short-burst hammering allows the brain to cool. Moreover, bristles and filters protect nostrils from debris. A

membrane (a translucent third eyelid) blocks particles and restrains the eyes from popping out of the sockets. Specially adapted clawed feet with short legs and a stiff, spiked tail anchor the bird while climbing or hammering. Basically, feet and tail form a tripod for balance. Amazing is the tongue which is longer than the bill, sometimes sticky, barbed, and with a hard, pointed tip. It may extend past 4 inches. Length facilitates foraging in live or rotten trees, bark crevices, or house shingles. Savored are beetles and their grubs (larvae) and other insects for the omnivorous woodpecker. However, tongues vary with foraging needs. The yellowbellied sapsucker has a relatively short, brush-like tongue to lap the sap from live trees; the hummingbird usually lingers near the sapsucker, waiting for leftovers. Besides the sapsucker, meet two more of Florida’s impressive woodpeckers. The downy woodpecker is the smallest in North America at around 6 to 7 inches; it flattens itself against a tree to deter predators. The pileated woodpecker is nearly crow size and mainly black with a prominent red crest. It resembles and sounds like Woody Woodpecker, but the acorn woodpecker was the cartoon inspiration. Indeed, woodpeckers are exquisite in function and appearance. However, the persistent rat-a-tat-tat of a determined woodpecker feeding possibly on termites or nesting on one’s residence is exasperating. Distantly placing a dead stump or supplying a bird house might relocate this creature. Nevertheless, woodpeckers are crucial in controlling insects to prevent mass infestation of trees. VV

Market Street chef Basista believes in culinary experiences for seniors

BY KATIE PARSONS

Chef Brandon Basista believes that everyone deserves a quality dining experience. It’s what attracted him to the fine dining industry a decade ago, and also what prompted his missionary work running a farm-to-table program at an addiction rehabilitation facility. Recently, Basista was hired as the head chef at Market Street, a new memory care residential community located at 6845 Murrell Road in Viera. “We try to meet every single resident where they are at, not where their diagnosis says they should be. We make our food program very person focused,” Basista said. That personalized care and attention to detail is what Basista says drew him to the job in the first place. After serving people who were trying to rebuild their lives, Basista said he felt a calling of a different sort. “I wanted to bring my 15 years of fine dining experience

to these residents. Everyone deserves quality food. Our residents are paying to be here, so we need to provide them the best in everything, including meals,” he said. Born in Atlanta, Basista moved to Vero Beach as a child. He says he always enjoyed cooking for his family and started cooking professionally at the age of 14. He graduated from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in 2007. Immediately, he began working in fine dining establishments from Vero Beach to Orlando. For the past three years, he has lived in New Hampshire on a 360-acre farm that serves as a Christian residential treatment center for addiction. Basista created and executed menus for three meals per day and developed programs where the residents helped with farming and meal creation. In his role at Market Street, Basista plans three meals per day for residents and also hosts a baking demonstration

every weekday morning. Residents are invited to help create recipes from scratch and then partake in the end result. Recently, the baking demo featured stretching mozzarella cheese. The exercise was sensory, encouraged fine motor skills, and also encouraged residents to focus on the instructions at hand. “I’m excited to provide culinary experiences that residents can enjoy and play a role in creating,” Basista said. Market Street opened its doors to residents on Dec. 5. The facility can accommodate 64 residents — including some housing for married couples. The upscale facility features a “market street” area that looks like a downtown avenue. Residents are exposed to multi-sensory programming that includes musical performances, cultural arts and faith maintenance. VV For more information on what Market Street has to offer, go to marketstreetresidence.com.

Watercolorists from beginners to advanced help one another achieve success BY MUFFY BERLYN

Therese Ferguson paints watercolors of subjects ranging from red ripe cherries in a crystal bowl on a colorful quilt to yellow-brown coconuts hanging from a Florida palm. A watercolorist for 35 years, Ferguson is an active member of the Brevard Watercolor Society (BWS), a past president and the show chairperson for 10 years. She joined at the club’s inception in 1995, when Grace Hodgson, the founder, began the club to help promote watercolors in the Brevard area by having demos and classes. The BWS, 17 years later, still is illuminating beginning, intermediate and advanced watercolorists with its original vision for its now 170 members, with up to 60 active members. Ferguson, who is an advanced watercolorist, sells her paintings from $300 for a small painting to $2,000 for larger works, and is co-owner of the Art & Antique Studio & Gallery in Melbourne, says she “gives back by mentoring” the BWS members. She notes that if a member who is a beginning watercolorist asks for a critique, more advanced members are there to help. Diane Harmon, the current president and member for four years, first joined when she “had just taken up watercolors and was

interested in all the demos and the help I could get from other watercolor members.” She considers that her ability has “greatly improved,” and that the group is “very forthcoming with information and help, very welcoming.” She states, “We have a good time. Ages are very diverse and skills are very diverse.” The every other monthly meetings, which started in January, (with summers off) are structured with a half hour of socializing before, a general meeting at 1 to 1:30 p.m., followed by a demonstration from an artist brought in from somewhere in the U.S. The day after the meeting, a three-day workshop by the same artist, is made available to members for a cost. In between, the BWS has miniworkshops taught by local artists. Those are free to members, $5 for a visitor. “Usually they teach you a different technique, whatever is their speciality and these

are held five times a year,” explained Harmon. There is also a Plein Air group that paints outdoors during winter months, one each month. Cheri Allen, second vice president and head of membership for BWS, considers herself a beginner watercolorist. “I’ve been drawing most of my life with pencil, and had done some acrylic, when I moved down to Florida.” Through a friend she discovered the BWS, and joined a year and a half ago. “I’m around the right people to learn.”

All workshops are held at the AHF Hall, 535 Hammock Road, Melbourne Village, and the general meeting is at Satellite Beach City Hall, 565 Cassia Blvd., Satellite Beach. Said Harmon of the club in general, “Any level of artist is welcome, we encourage anyone who is interested to attend a meeting and enjoy a new experience.” VV For more information on the Brevard Watercolor Society, go to brevardwatercolorsociety. com or call Harmon at 321-610-4513. Other officers’ numbers and emails are listed on the website.

The Brevard Watercolor Society (BWS) show “SPLASH” will be held Feb. 18 and 19 at the Azan Shrine Center, 1591 W. Eau Gallie Blvd, Melbourne. Therese Ferguson, show chairperson, said the watercolors displayed are from BWS members only and are “from absolute beginners to professionals who have been in international and national shows, and receive signature status from shows.” Ferguson said there is “a wide range of talent. We have a larger gallery area that is not a judged area to encourage new artists to get experience exhibiting. There is also a browse room, where artists take a space and set up browse boxes, small items. There are a lot of raffle items and silent auction items. Members donate small paintings for those.” The show is open to the public.
