Steve Johnson, who will retire as president of The Viera Company on Aug. 31, has seen a lot of changes during his tenure with the company which dates back to 1989. Johnson was a financial analyst, division vice president and chief operating officer before becoming the president as he steadily rose through the ranks of prestigious company. “In the early days, I remember having to explain what Viera was and where it was located within Brevard County,’’ Johnson said. “I recall my answer being met with puzzled faces, but now that’s not a problem. People know what Viera is, where we are and what we have to offer.’’

Memorial Day honors many in different ways BY MARIA SONNENBERG

Memorial Day has always been significant for Donn Weaver, special projects coordinator for the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center. “As a son of a World War II veteran, an Army veteran myself and father of four, Memorial Day was important to me growing up in Brevard and during my professional life,” he said. On Memorial Day mornings, Weaver would take his family to ceremonies at veterans’ cemeteries so his children would learn about the high cost of freedom. In the afternoons, a family picnic rounded out the special day. After Sept. 9, 2010,

however, Memorial Day changed dramatically for the Weavers. That day, his youngest son, United States Army First Lt. Todd Weaver, was killed in combat in Afghanistan. “From that date, it becomes for me and our family a time to make sure other Americans understand the price of freedom and remember all the fallen who have given their full measure to our country,” Weaver said. Children show off talents in Business Fair Expo BY JILL BLUE GAINES

Some children around Brevard County don’t want to wait until the age of 16 to work. This entrepreneur spirit was apparent at the inaugural Brevard Children’s Business Fair Expo held at The Avenue Viera on March 31. Ranging in age from 6 to 16 years old, 25 vendors showed off their business acumen. The criteria was to make or build a product to sell without any interference or help from parents. It included transactions from selling to handling electronic payments. “We plan on having it next year with 50 booths,’’ said Nora McFarland, the organizer of the expo. “Next year, participants don’t have to do the same business as this year.’’ Kibo Manning might only be 8 years old, but he has some bold ideas. His White Tiger Comics won the competition for the most original business idea. “I make comics and bookmarks, pictures and pencils to sell,’’ Manning said. “One of my comics is called “Senior Man Bun,” and it's only $3. This is our best seller so far, and we made another

book called “Mad Dad.” It’s inspired off of my favorite book called “Calvin and the Hobbs.’’ Well, this one hasn't been bought too much — only like five times. Usually, the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands at Viera are a quiet and solitary place to enjoy some of Brevard County’s wildlife. It’s one of the hidden gems in the county at the west end of North Wickham Road on 3658 Charlie Corbeil Way in Viera. On Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22, the Wetlands weren’t so quiet and solitary as a large crowd gathered for the ninth annual Viera Wetlands Nature Festival hosted by Brevard County’s Natural Resources Management Department. Organizers of the two-day event hope to ensure the longevity of the Wetlands’ experience for generations to come. Flight of the Raptor presented a weekend of birds of prey as it talked about the importance of the birds and their connection with the environment.

Trip of a lifetime delivers message of hope for Ugandan children BY JULIE STURGEON

During a trip to Egypt in 2007, Marty L. Ward lay in a marble sarcophagus, meditating and imagining herself in a white flowing gown with a thousand children at her feet. The image perplexed Ward, a former teacher and social worker, because she did not work with children at the time. Four years later in 2011, Ward read a story that rattled her bones. A 10-yearold girl named Ashlyn Conner committed suicide one morning rather than face another day of being tormented by bullies at her school. Right then, Ward knew that she needed to do something to help the victims of bullying. According to Ward, Connor represents one of about 4,600 kids who take their own lives every year in the United States. Ward got busy and started a business — Confidence Eliminates Bullying. The business hopes to create confident, emotionally intelligent children and adults who believe in themselves rather than the mean words of a bully. She also wrote a book, “Get Clear Get Confident Get Going,’’ which was discovered by Buni Alex, a missionary in Uganda in 2015. “Since then, his life began to change from using the information in the book,” Ward said. “He wanted more.” During the next several years, Ward and Alex became friends and business associates with a common

goal of helping bully victims. Last month, Alex arranged for Ward to travel to Uganda to teach the Confidence Eliminates Bullying principles. The image of the white dress and 1,000 children became reality. Ward then realized the significance of the dream. “What I accomplished was beyond my wildest

imagination,” Ward said. “I was amazed that I could have that much of an impact as quickly as I did.” Ward’s philosophy of teaching is simple but successful. Her TAG method stands for Talents, Abilities and Gifts, which are unique to each child. In a recent trip to Uganda, Ward used her TAG method to create change. In Uganda, beating children

is all too common. Ward’s mission during her March 2018 trip was to teach adults to replace physical abuse with a positive, confidenceinstilling approach using the TAG method. One example was her success within the pastor’s immediate family. “The floors are dirt (in Uganda), and the pastor’s children would spill water on the dirt floor when washing their feet,” Ward said. “Instead of beating his kids for spilling water like he was used to, I taught him to see the children for who they were.” Ward, who trained more than 7,000 children, teachers, parents, pastors, farmers and other business owners on how to eliminate bullying, focuses on “teaching the teachers.” During her journey, Ward taught Ugandan adults to speak positively to children, resulting in a boost of confidence within the

youngsters. “Parents, teachers and pastors stopped bullying,” Ward said. “They learned to respect children for who they are.” Ward now wants to expand her anti-bullying program in the United States. Teaching confidence may not stop bullies, she said, but it can help kids accept themselves and their flaws so they can deflect bullies’ comments. “If kids don’t believe the bully, they can’t be hurt,” Ward said. “They accept themselves for who they are and say to the bully, ‘what’s your point?’ ” Join Ward from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 3 for a presentation at the Red Ginger at 1700 W. Women’s Baseball World Cup coming to Viera BY CARL KOTALA

A major baseball tournament will be coming to the USSSA Space Coast Complex in August. And the world will be watching. The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has announced that Viera will be the site of the 2018 Women’s Baseball World Cup, which will take place Aug. 22 to 31. It will mark the first time a baseball world cup has been played in the United States. “It’s a really big deal for us, and for the community,” said Jami Lobpries, Vice President of Marketing for the USSSA. “You’re going to have 11 countries, plus the United States (team) coming in, so it’s good exposure. “But I think one of the biggest things for us is the long-term relationship that we want to build with the WBSC. This could definitely lead to more opportunities for international events, where you have Olympic qualifiers, different world cups. “We’re hoping to put on a good show, expose the WBSC to Brevard County and this community and (have it) lead to more events with them.”

The USSSA Space Coast Complex will host the Women's Baseball World Classic in August. With players from 12 teams from around the world, plus coaches and support staff, families and fans coming to Brevard County, the impact on local businesses could be huge.

The potential short and long-term financial impact for Brevard County could be huge. “Of all the possible locations in the United States, the WBSC chose Viera on Florida’s Space Coast to host this important event,” Eric Garvey, Executive Director of Florida’s Space Coast Office of Tourism wrote in an email. “With a worldwide audience, this event will put Viera on the map and showcase the beauty of our area!” The tourism office, local Chambers of Commerce, the Viera Co., the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and Brevard County Public Schools are among those who are all part of the plan to help make the tournament a big success. “The community has already been hugely involved,” said Emily Moak, Director, Space Coast Complex Operations and

Event Planning. “We’ve been out and about to local areas and they’ve been very supportive of helping us. … At least we have experience running tournaments, so that helps. “But definitely, we’ll be leaning on the community for help with different events — opening ceremonies, volunteers, all kinds of things.” And if all goes well, this could be just the beginning. “Of course, we’re excited to bring it here,” Lobpries said. “We’re a big part of this community. We’ll be here for at least 20 years. We want people to come out. We want sponsors to be a part of it. We want to show the WBSC that this is a great location, that they should make this their U.S. home. “That’s our goal. This isn’t just going to be a one-off event. We want this to be a long-term partnership.” V V

Viera’s Schaneville named to All-State Academic team BY CARL KOTALA

Trey Schaneville has scored … again. The Viera High senior, who is the all-time scoring leader in both football and basketball, is one of 24 student-athletes from throughout the state to be named by the FHSAA to the Florida Dairy Farmers 2018 All-State Academic team. Schaneville is only the second Viera student-athlete to receive the honor. The other was Alexander Liles, who played golf and lacrosse for the Hawks in 2014. The 24 honorees will be recognized at a banquet on June 11 in Gainesville. Each student will receive a $1,700 scholarship and a commemorative medallion. “This is really cool,” Schaneville said. “To be chosen as one of the 24 students is a huge honor ... it’s just great to have all my hard work recognized and to be able to help my parents out with paying for college.” In addition to scoring 1,210 points in basketball and 267 points in football, Schaneville also has served as his school’s representative for the

Faculty Challenge softball game brings Viera community together BY CARL KOTALA

It’s the kind of event that brings the entire Viera community together for a night of fun … and softball. And after a year’s hiatus, it’s back. The 14th annual Faculty Softball Challenge will return May 22 at the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Space Coast Complex with a pair of new matchups and a whole lot of excitement. It all kicks off at 6 p.m. when Ralph Williams Elementary plays Viera Charter, followed at 7:15 by Manatee vs. Quest. Tickets are $2 at each school and $3 at the gate on the day of the game. Though the event is not designated as a fundraiser, proceeds will benefit all four schools. “There were thoughts it might be dead, but I think it’s going to be as alive and kicking as it’s ever been,” said Todd Zgonc of Manatee Elementary School, and the game’s organizer. “We have new opponents this year … USSSA has done a phenomenal job working out the details, getting us in here and supporting this event.”

OK, I’ll do it for you.’ “I’ll usually see them in the stands and I’ll point them out, ‘All right, this one’s for you.’ They get really excited. Especially when we do something good, they go crazy. A volleyball camp will be held June 4 to 7 in the Viera gym for students going into grades 4 to 6 as well as for students going into grades 7 to 9. Both camps run from 9 a.m. to noon. Viera High players will be on hand to help. Campers will receive instruction on passing, setting, hitting, serving and defense. There will also be group drills and team play with a camp tournament taking place June 7, followed by an awards ceremony. The cost of the camp is $120 per player.

During those same dates — but in the evening — there will also be Specialty Volleyball Clinics for incoming players in grades 6 to 12. Clinics will be held on defense, hitting, serving, setting and blocking. The cost of the clinics are $30 per session. The third camp is called the All-Skills Volleyball Camp and will take place June 11 to 14. It is geared toward students who will be coming into grades 7 to 12 with at least one year of club or school experience. The players must be able to overhand serve. This camp will be run by Cape Coast 15, 16 and

17 Elite coaches Wayne, Murray, Diego Perez and Lindsay Tipton. In addition to working on improving skill sets, campers will take part in team play with a tournament and award ceremony. Duran Men’s Golf Association sees increase in numbers, excitement BY CARL KOTALA

League play in the Duran Men’s Golf Association continues to grow in not only the number of players taking part, but in the excitement of the competition. The league began play in October with as many as 80 players on the course each week. The top 48 qualified for the Chase for the Cup. The two-week event concluded at the end of March, with prize money provided by sponsors HD Dental and Golf Carts Unlimited.

“It’s definitely grown each year, I would say by an average of eight, 10 guys,” Duran Head Golf Professional Matt Morrison said of the league. “We’re reaching our capacity. “Having all the prize money and the exciting finish down the stretch creates excitement. Weekly attendance is good because they don’t want to miss getting their points. It always comes down to a half a point between 48th and 49th (place), so literally, a halfa-point can cost someone hundreds of dollars in

prize money.” This year’s league featured five flights, including the newly created Red Flight for players over 75. Jeff Henning shot 79 with a handicap of nine for an overall score total of 70 to win Flight A. He was followed by Steve Ochs and there was a three-way tie for third between Robbie Rosenberger, John Creighton and Joe Lentini. Flight B went to Howard Heidel, followed by Tom Bartlett, Steve Parlefsky and Bruce Miller. In Flight C, the winner was

Mike Piccininni will remember Saturday, April 7 for the rest of his life. The Viera resident and a member of the Viera East Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Golf Association recorded a hole-in-one on the sixth hole at Indian River Colony Club during the annual Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Foundation Tournament. He earned $10,000 for the shot. Murphy Cadillac in Melbourne sponsored the prize, which was the largest in the 22-year history of the tournament. The Brevard Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Foundation helps Brevard residents, who suffer from dementia diseases. Bob David won the VEMA Masters Jacket after winning the VEMA Masters Championship on April 12. It was the final event of the VEMA calendar. Holy Trinity, BCSO reach agreement on school resource officer BY CARL KOTALA

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy have reached an agreement to enhance the safety of the school’s students and faculty for the 2018-19 school year. Although the school has partnered with the BCSO previously to use off-duty officers to be on campus for more than a year, Holy Trinity is the first private school in Brevard County to sign a formal agreement to have a deputy assigned full-time as a school resource officer. The announcement was made last month by Holy Trinity President Katherine Cobb and Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey after the contract was officially signed. “The deputies that are doing it on a contractual basis are awesome,” Sheriff Wayne Ivey said. “They put their heart and passion into protecting the students here, and our faculty. But when you have someone that is permanently assigned to a school, there’s a seamless delivery of services. “They know everybody on

the campus. If somebody is here that’s not supposed to be, they know it. They know all the nuances of the campus and everything else. It just furthers that already existing partnership and does it in a time that, right now, none of us thought we would ever see, but it unfortunately is a very troubling trend throughout our country.” There are currently 38 school resource officers

in Brevard County, which has 98 schools (including charter schools). Ivey said the sheriff’s office is now in negotiations with Brevard County Public Schools on a formal agreement of their own. Cobb, meanwhile, was the first to contact the sheriff about getting a permanent school resource officer assigned to the campus. “Our students deserve it

and our parents desire it,” Cobb said. “I wanted to make sure we were quick to react on this, not only because of the environment, but because we know (Sheriff Ivey’s) resources are limited. By coming in first, we know we’ll be secured with a deputy on Aug. 1 when school begins.” Cobb believes having an officer with a close relationship to the school

can only be beneficial. “We’re obviously excited about this opportunity, but we’re really looking forward to having this school resource officer assimilate into our community here,” she said. “… This individual will get to know our students by name, and our faculty, and that way we’ll work toward preventing any problems before they occur because of that relationship.” With the number of school shootings on the rise in the United States — including February’s deadly incident that took 17 lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland — the importance of school security has never been more imperative. “I think the importance of today, with what this school has done, is taking that step and saying we’re going to protect every person that sets foot on this campus, and we’re going to do it in great partnership with the sheriff’s office,” Ivey said. The sheriff stressed there is “no more important mission than protecting our community and our schools within that community.” VV

HawkThon Club raises more than $25,000 for Children’s Miracle Network BY CARL KOTALA

They didn’t just meet their goal. They exceeded it … and then some. Viera High’s HawkThon Club held its annual dance marathon in late March to culminate a year of raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network, and more specifically, Arnold Palmer Hospital and the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies. When it was all said and done, the eight members of the student-run executive committee were happy to announce that instead of their goal of $20,000 (which was doubled from last year), they raised $25,258.07. “Basically, all of our money and our year-round work goes to an amazing cause,” club president and Viera High senior Sydney Patterson said. The executive board of the club, which included Patterson, Claire Mitchell, Lauren Dempsey, Miriam Akram, Dani Mordas, Kallee Holland, Daphne Furman and

Taylor Conway worked hard throughout the year to help reach their fundraising goal. Each member of the board had specific assignments throughout the year. “Basically, we’re a studentrun club, but we fundraise all year,” Patterson said. “We start our fundraising, basically a year before our fundraising event. Throughout the year, we fundraise through car washes, through bucket drops, through student events at school — like, we did a dodgeball tournament — stuff like that. That’s how we get to the final point. “… The night of (the dance marathon) kind of tops it off. It’s the celebration and our last push to reach that final amount.” The event, which is run more like a festival with games, activities and performers, drew between 30 and 50 people last year. That number jumped considerably this year after a lot of hard work by the executive committee. There were an estimated 200 people

at this year’s event, helping the group to raise $10,000 in the final week of fundraising. “We really pushed trying to advertise to the students, getting the word out,” said Mitchell, who was the eventnight coordinator. “A lot of kids, just talking with them, they don’t know what it’s about. The name ‘dance marathon’ doesn’t mean anything to them. They think we’re a dancing club or something. “So, it was just talking to the students. We all went into classrooms and made presentations, talked to kids at lunch, just really spread the word. Everyone was like, ‘Oh, this is for a good cause,’ and they came out. I think this year, advertising helped us the most, just telling people what we’re about.” V V

After finishing third at last year’s Florida State Spanish Conference, a group of 16 Holy Trinity students wanted to accomplish two things at this year’s event: They wanted to improve their finish, and they wanted to place higher than rival Trinity Prep. That’s just what they did. Holy Trinity finished second, just two points behind Jacksonville Bolles in a competition that featured a variety of different categories, including speaking, poem writing, a play and even a talent competition. “I think we surpassed our expectations, but we didn’t live up to our fantasies in some regard,” Holy Trinity junior Hari Dandapani said. “We wanted that first place, but I was definitely proud of how we performed.” In addition to her strong musical performance, senior Nidhi Chary wrote an essay on the importance of Fine Arts in Education and won a $100 scholarship prize. She also helped Dandapani write the play the students performed, which was based on the life and early struggles of Spanish singing legend Celia Cruz.

Now, here we are, speaking fluently and able to convey our thoughts and ideas in Spanish. Viera High’s Boritzki earns prestigious science nomination SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Caitlyn Boritzki, a freshman at Viera High School, has been nominated for the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders. A workshop will be held from June 29 to July 1 in Lowell, Mass. The Congress is an honors only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be scientists and technologists to stay true to their dream. The Congress hopes to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Boritzki was nominated by Dr. John C. Mather, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics. Mather is the science director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists at Viera High School. Boritzki will represent Viera High School based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology. During the three-day Congress, Boritzki will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science recipients talk about leading scientific research; be given advice

from deans of the world's top tech universities; be inspired by fellow teen science prodigies; and learn about cutting edge advances and the future of science and technology. “This is a crucial time in America when we need more nimble-minded and creative scientists and technologists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, who is the executive director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists. “Focused, bright and determined students like Caitlyn Boritzki are our future and she deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her.” The Academy offers free services and programs to students who have the desire to learn more about their future in science or technology. Viera’s Karmaker headed to International HOSA event BY CARL KOTALA

It’s an academic event that Viera High School students had never competed in before this year. And now Viera senior Pritom “Peter” Karmaker is Brevard County’s last person standing. Karmaker placed second in the Dental Terminology division last month at the state level of the Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, (HOSA) competition. That means he has qualified to take part in the 41st HOSA International Leadership Conference in Dallas June 27 to 30, where he will compete with students from around the country, and the world. Karmaker is the only Brevard County student to qualify for the event. Although there were a number of different categories to compete in, Karmaker said he chose Dental Terminology — which consisted of a 100-question, hand-written test with 20 tiebreaker questions — because of Viera teacher Frances Johnston, who also is the Viera HOSA Club’s advisor.

“Honestly, I felt pretty confident about the test because it was stuff that I’ve learned,” Karmaker said. “I’ve had Mrs. Johnston as my dental teacher. I had her for three years and during those three years, we’ve learned a lot of stuff about dentistry. “That’s why I entered that event in the first place. I felt like I could do pretty well.” This was the first year Viera’s HOSA Club team has competed. The school sent 14 students to the regional event

and in a stunning debut, 14 of them placed. That included Karmaker, who took first in his category. Questions at the state-level competition ranged from pathophysiology to anatomy of the head and neck, procedures a dentist would perform and medial law. “It’s definitely not the easiest test, but I would say there was a good 80, 85 percent of the questions, I definitely knew,” Karmaker said. “The other 15 (percent)

or so, maybe I was a little bit iffy because I’d never seen them before and there was no practice test I was able to take. “In all honesty, I could have studied a bit more beforehand … but I didn’t do that. If I did, maybe I could have gotten first. But I feel like it’s a good thing I got second because I’m going to take it more seriously when I go to the internationals.” While he may be competing in dental terminology,

Karmaker wants to become a cardiologist. He will attend the University of Central Florida in the fall. “Peter is academically gifted,” Johnston wrote in an email. “He has always strived to be the best he could be. I also believe he will achieve his greatest dream of becoming a cardiologist in the future. “I know, I would hire him as my cardiologist when my time comes to need a good one!” V V

Winshape Foundation camp returns for a fifth year BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER

Learning the techniques to become proficient in a selection of skills is a portion of the immense fun and attraction to participating in the WinShape Camps for Communities in June in Viera. To create experiences that transform is the mission of WinShape Foundation ministries. The camp will return June 18 to 22 for its fifth year at the Calvary Chapel in Viera. The Calvary Chapel, as host, could not make the event happen without the help of the entire community, according to Mary Farrier, the camp host and communication spokeswoman from the church for the project. “The kids love it and have a blast and there is something to do for everybody,” Farrier said. “Ages accepted are

completed first grade through completed ninth grade for one week from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a cost of $214. Each camper selects three skills to learn for the week. “WinShape Foundation trains and pays college students to learn skills and then transports them in numbers to camp locations during the summer,” Farrier said. “Twenty-nine college students will arrive this year in Viera to teach the skills of archery, basketball, cheerleading, crafts, dance, fast food (cooking), flag football, girl world (which is stuff for girls like polishing nails); gymnastics, lacrosse, Man land (that is teaching men to be gentlemen), soccer, wacky science, yard games and under construction.” Established in 1985 in Georgia by the Chick-fil-A

During the last day of camp, the children will show their families and parents what they learned during a day-long picnic catered by the Viera Chick-Fil-A. “There is so much energy,” Farrier said about the

camp and the children participating. “The kids have so much fun with the skills and the staff that comes in is so fun. Least Terns adapt to new nesting sites Least Terns, listed as a threatened species in the state of Florida, have adapted to new nesting sites. But, often they need a human’s kind help. “Terns are shore birds and eat fish,” said Anne Hicks, a volunteer and board member of the Space Coast Audubon Society. “They nest on gravel and sand but have been losing their beach nesting sites, now nesting on gravel roof tops. Looking for rooftops used previously, as they now are arriving again from South America, the Least Terns find them gone as building owners have recovered roofs in other materials.” Hicks says Terns have found rooftop buildings in the area on which to roost, that also are near water and food sources. The Audubon and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) collaborate with building owners and managers that have nesting Least Terns to try to harmoniously accommodate the Terns and the store patrons. “Nearly 80 percent of the Least Terns are nesting on rooftops,” said the FFWCC. “The birds nest in flocks with an average of two eggs per nest. Within a few days after hatching, chicks start to walk around and can fall off roofs that do not have a lip of barrier or can become washed down a rain spout after a storm. Once on the ground they face numerous hazards. That is where the kind humans come into play. The Audubon has many concerned volunteer bird stewards who are trained on

how to carefully assist the chick back to the rooftop. But more stewards are needed to participate in a Least Tern bird watch, according to Hicks. “People are now being trained to train others. We will need volunteers all the way through August.” Volunteers learn how to watch over the Least Terns and assist with placing the chicks, that might have fallen, back onto the roof using a “Chick-A-Boom” elevator pole. Volunteers will learn how to handle the birds, and to survey and report what they find every week. Participants in the program are needed all around Brevard County. Four sites already with nesting Terns are Publix at 7777 N. Wickham in Suntree; Healthplex, 6300 N. Wickham, Suntree; Bealls in Rockledge and Health First, 3300 S. Fiske Blvd., Rockledge. The one-of-a-kind event is designed to celebrate law enforcement and fire rescue members throughout the community. The parade will feature

There’s a perfect solution out there for plastics Unfortunately, most of the plastic produced in the world ends up in landfills or in the environment. In an article entitled “A Whopping 91% of Plastic Isn't Recycled,” National Geographic shares the results of a study published in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances, the first global analysis of all plastics ever made — and their fate. “Of the 8.3 billion metric tons that has been produced,” the article explains, “6.3 billion metric tons has become plastic waste. Of that, only 9 percent has been recycled. The vast majority — 79 percent — is accumulating in landfills or sloughing off in the natural environment as litter. Meaning: at some point, much of it ends up in the oceans, the final sink.” This is a problem not only because of the high volume being produced, but also because plastic production is increasing as “we make more, year after year.”

El Leoncito Viera prepares for elaborate fiesta

On Valentine’s Day of this year, Michael Sanchez gave himself the gift of a restaurant. The third restaurant in Sanchez’s current portfolio of eateries, the new El Leoncito in Viera was not an easy feat to accomplish. “We started working on it three years ago,” Sanchez said. The stand-alone restaurant

features a menu similar to its sister restaurant of the same name in Titusville. Sanchez also owns El Chaparral Mexican Grill in Cocoa. Sanchez’s father, Miguel, and his mother, Bertha, started the first El Leoncito in Whittier, Calif. “They later opened a restaurant in La Habra and Brea, Calif. before coming to Titusville,” said Sanchez, who started his restaurant career as a 12-year-old busboy at

His father migrated from Havana, Cuba at age 17, just ahead of the Castro regime. “He later joined the Army and fought in the Bay of Pigs invasion to liberate Cuba,” Sanchez said. Sanchez’s mother is from Texas and of Mexican heritage, which explains the easy blend of Cuban and Mexican dishes that can be seen in the restaurant’s menu. Ditz’s impressive military career included treating senators, congressmen and senior military of�icers. He also was invited to apply for NASA’s prestigious astronaut program and was asked to be Vice President Al Gore’s personal physician. However, Ditz gracefully declined both offers. Spinning tales about the rattlesnake. From deserts to woodlands, the rattlesnake, native to the Americas, is a feared reptile. Yet, it was symbolic during the revolutionary years — the legendary Gadsden flag displayed a coiled rattlesnake above the warning “DON’T TREAD ON ME.” Characteristic is the diamond-shaped head and thick body. Overlapping keeled (ridged) scales protect from dehydration and trauma, and patterns provide camouflage. The offspring is similar. As a pit viper, the rattlesnake has a heat-sensing pit between each eye and nostril which detects the body heat of prey — rodents, rabbits and birds. Incapacitated with venom, prey is usually ingested headfirst. Adults often feed at two-week intervals. Reproduction generally occurs every three years with up to 12 babies. This snake is ovoviviparous: eggs are hatched inside the female and the young are born live. A newborn is encased in a membrane, which it soon perforates. Longevity spans 15 to 20 years. Absolutely, the rattlesnake prefers retreat to confrontation. When cornered, it warns with simultaneous coiling, rattling and hissing before striking at a speed of half a second. It may strike twice. The victim’s circulatory system is jeopardized. Survival depends on the amount and potency of venom and timely treatment with antivenin (antivenom). Insistent “buzzing” should be heeded on nature trails or rocky surfaces, ideal for this cold-blooded creature to bask. Its rattle features hollow ring segments of keratin, the same material as fingernails. A new segment appears with each shedding — several times yearly for the expanding juvenile and sometimes less than once yearly for the adult. Rattles cannot depict age since some fall off. To avoid indiscriminate slaughter, some snakes supposedly tend not to rattle. Some are evolving with atrophied tail muscles or with no rattles. Nevertheless, yearly roundups slaughter thousands of rattlers. A baby rattler does not have a rattle, just a pre-button. It cannot alert, but its potent venom can harm, especially children. With first shedding around two weeks, a rattle segment appears. Of possibly 36 rattlesnake species, three inhabit Florida. The eastern diamondback, the largest rattlesnake, can reach 8 feet and weigh 10 pounds. Coloration may be brown, tan or yellow and patterned with diamonds. It

is fast and also swims. The timber rattlesnake inhabits northern Florida, where it often is identified as the canebrake. Length can exceed 6 feet. Coloration is pale grayish brown to pinkish buff, with dark cross bands (chevrons) and a stripe down the back. In northern states, it is called the timber and coloration is darker. (Taxonomists consider the timber and canebrake as the timber species.) This snake hides in piles of rotten “timber.” Similar, the timber and eastern diamondback often are confused. The dusky pigmy rattlesnake averages 1 foot. Coloration is light to dark gray with black blotches. Feisty, it delivers more snakebites than other snakes. Rarely fatal, its painful bite can destroy a finger. Warning is a weak buzzinginsect rattle, but this snake might remain motionless. Ubiquitous, it slithers across a backyard or coils in a potted plant in a garden nursery. A coiled newborn is the size of a quarter. Depending on temperature, rattlesnakes experience brumation or hibernation — experts cannot agree. It is a lethargic period. In Florida, rattlesnakes are active most of the year. During temporary cold periods, the pigmy might just go undercover. The bigger rattlers might choose gopher tortoise burrows, hollow logs or stump holes. In colder climates, a rattlesnake den (hibernaculum), such as a rocky crevice or cave, can entertain a dozen to several hundred snakes. Mixed species might gather — like the timber and the copperhead. The den is commonly reused yearly. Hopefully, the rattlesnake will someday be acknowledged for its benefits. Besides controlling rodents, its venom is used in stroke, cancer and heart disease research. It is another indispensable creature! V V

During a week surrounded by family, friends, flowers and cakes, Sarah McInnis celebrated her 104th birthday in a style befitting this sweet “young” lady. McInnis’ actual birthday was April 10, but the celebration started with her family and friends at church on Sunday, April 8. It then continued Tuesday with family on her actual birthday. Her daughter Betty Francis and son-in-law took her out to eat at her favorite restaurant — Cracker Barrel. And then, as if to put icing on the cake (which they did), McInnis and her family celebrated again on Wednesday, April 11 with her many friends where she lives at Town Square Assisted Living facility in Viera. The cake had plenty of flowers and cream icing. "Carrot cake is my favorite and has been for a very long time," McInnis said during the celebration. Born in 1914 in Kansas City, Mo. when Woodrow Wilson was president, McInnis was quite active in sports in high school and in college at Hendricks College in Arkansas. She won several ribbons in track and field events. She also loved tennis. This was a time when the opportunity to play sports was not prevalent for women. McInnis has lived at Town Square, a Wuestoff/Steward facility off Murrell Road in Viera, for the past three years. Her late husband had been in the Air Force, and McInnis was able to travel around the world. During her working days, McInnis was a teacher. She also worked for H&R Block and the civil service. She also has a great love for music. McInnis participates in the numerous games and events at Town Square such as balloon hockey and floor volleyball from the comfort of her chair. When asked about the approaching Mother’s Day, her daughter Betty said nothing special has been planned. But, that could change. In her room, McInnis has a painting of her daughter on the wall just above her easy chair. It reminds her of their special bond and relationship. V V

Pokrywa, the Senior Vice President of land use planning & development, will become the new president on Sept. 1. As president of The Viera Company, Johnson was repeatedly recognized by the community for his dedication and strong leadership through the years. His involvement with the Home Builder and Contractors Association of Brevard, as an Economic Development Council board member and as an active member of the Civilian Military Council were strengths during his tenure. “Steve is respected in the community, appreciated by our lenders and will be missed by his fellow

employees,’’ said Bart Weeks, the chief operating officer for A. Duda & Sons, Inc., the parent company to The Viera Company. “During his tenure as president, he realized the expansion of our Development of Regional Impact (DRI) to encompass the balance of our Cocoa Ranch, helped us launch Viera Builders, and championed the coving concept in Viera.’’ Johnson also listened to those who worked under him. “He fostered a workplace culture of consensus and collaboration and provided steady leadership during the recession,’’ Weeks said. “In his place, we are pleased to have Todd Pokrywa assume leadership of The Viera Company. Todd is highly capable and proven, with a background in planned communities including Lakewood Ranch and Viera.” During the past four years, Pokrywa has worked closely with Johnson. Pokrywa wrote his thesis on the masterplanned community of Viera. With 23 years in the land planning and development field, including previous experience overseeing long range and strategic planning at the master-planned community of Lakewood Ranch, Pokrywa came to The Viera Company for the purpose of eventually transitioning to president of

the company. As part of the succession plan, Pokrywa has been slowly assuming many of Johnson’s responsibilities through the years in the business, community and with government relations to ensure a smooth transition.

“I have observed Viera grow into the vibrant community it is today from the time I was a student who chose to study the benefits of the plans for the new town as the topic for my thesis while attending Canada’s University of Waterloo in

the early (1990s),’’ Pokrywa said. “I am incredibly grateful for the guidance Steve has provided me since he gave me the opportunity to have a role in shaping the future of the master-planned community of Viera.’’ V V

Instead of utilizing county vans which were used last year and in previous Festivals, golf carts were utilized this year. The use of golf carts enabled spectators to hear, see, feel and smell the Wetlands in a more personal way. During the first day of the Festival, the annual Charlie Corbeil Student Art Contest was held onsite. Students that attended the event had the opportunity to draw, paint and write an essay or poem on a nature-related theme. The winners were announced later on the same day and won monetary prizes and art supplies. Hailey Scalia finished first in both the Art and Poetry divisions in the 11-12 age group. Her brother, Joseph Scalia, finished first in Art in the 8-10 group. Riley McLaughlin finished first in Art in the 5-7 age group. Dallen Lopez placed first in Poetry in the 8-10 age group. V V

The VCS middle school team will be the only team to represent Brevard in the World Finals. “Everybody had tears of joy in their eyes,” said VCS OM faculty sponsor Lynne Boucher, who is also the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) education director and Robotics director. VCS is a kindergarten-througheighth grade, STEAMfocused, privately run school of choice that is funded by public education dollars, so there is no cost to attend.

“OM is such a fantastic program for schools to implement. It promotes STEAM education and character development,” Boucher said. OM students must work as a team to address challenges and figure out creative ways to solve them. One of the most beneficial talents students develop from OM are the real-world leadership and project management skills that will help them today and in their future, Boucher added. “Our students are in charge of planning, creating and then implementing everything as a team. The problem the team chose

to solve is a technicalbased problem, which means that they must engineer mechanical devices to perform specific functions and challenges. The team created robotically controlled teleprompters and a device that produced text during their performance. These things were seamlessly placed into a highly artistic performance full of music and expressive acting.” VCS principal Dr. Julie Cady said she is committed to finding the resources to send the team to Iowa. “They worked so hard and did so well, it will be our pleasure to see that they

make it to World’s, whatever it takes. We expected and hoped they would do well, but first place in the entire state?
