Six conservation heroes reel in prestigious ‘Charlies’ SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

The fourth annual Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards will celebrate the accomplishments of five impressive conservation leaders from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 13 at the Heritage Isle Clubhouse Ballroom in Viera. Corbeil, who died unexpectedly in late 2013, was popular in the conservation community. He held a certification as a Florida Master Naturalist and his nature photography is displayed all over the world. He was one of the original “Wetlands Rangers” at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands. He helped many young photographers hone their skills in wildlife photography. A new category this year will feature a youth conservationist. Corbeil and his wife, Charlotte, wrote a popular wildlife column for the Viera Voice. Charlotte Corbeil has continued writing the column since her husband’s death. For tickets to the awards banquet, go to thecharlieawards.org. The 2017 Charlie Award recipients are: 1. Anne Birch – Marine Conservation director of The Nature Conservancy, served the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program. 2. Usually, the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands at Viera is a quiet and solitary place to enjoy some of Brevard County's wildlife. It's one of the hidden jewels in the county at the west end of North Wickham Road on 3685 Charlie Corbeil Way in Viera. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 22 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 23, it won't be as solitary but it promises to be fun. Supporting Viera's Natural Wonders is the theme for this year's eighth annual Viera Wetlands Nature Festival. Exhibits will feature local wildlife such as birds, bats and butterflies. Native plants, nature photography and art also will be highlighted. The festival is free to the public.

The Drive, Chip and Putt Championship cleverly focuses on youth and is aimed at growing the game of golf through focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in golf. Founded in 2013 by the

Masters Tournament, United States Golf Association and the PGA of America, boys and girls compete in separate divisions in four age categories: ages 7 to 9; 10 and 11, 12 and 13 and 14 and 15 years old. A nationwide program, local participants advance to play

in sub-regional and regional qualifiers, culminating in the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals held annually the Sunday before the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga. On April 2 this year, a group consisting of 80 boys and girls will participate in the national finals.

This year also is special locally because for the first time, local youths may compete in the first round at the Duran Golf Club. “Duran Golf Club and the Brevard County area is loaded full of young golfers and I know many of them are very excited to be able to participate this year at a local facility instead of having to travel to a site,” said Mathew Morrison, PGA head golf professional at Duran Golf Club, who is spearheading the competition at the club. Duran takes pride in always being a leader in junior golf on the Space Coast, Morrison said. “Golf is a game for the ages; it can teach our junior golfers some of life’s greatest lessons and values such as patience, persistence,

respect, attitude and sportsmanship.” Locally, youth golfers will be tested on three skills — driving, chipping, putting — and awarded points based upon how they do. Winners advance to the sub-regional and then a regional qualifying site with the end goal of making it to the final site at the 2018 Masters in Augusta that is nationally televised. Registration now is open for the May local qualifiers’ event with no entry fee. Players may sign up at drivechipandputt.com and select Duran Golf Club as one of the local qualifying sites. Imagine taking music from classical composers such as Beethoven, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky and mixing it with works of classic rock groups like The Who, Jimmy Hendrix and Pink Floyd for a one-of-a-kind performance. Well, the touring group Rocktopia has figured it out. And when the show comes to the King Center at 8 p.m. April 21, a group of Viera High students will be there to help. “There’s parts of the songs where we’re background music for them and there’s other parts where the entire chorus of a song is us singing it, which is weird because it’s taking artists you would hear in (classic rock) music and applying it in four-part harmonies that you don’t usually hear with that,” Viera senior Brittany Antonellis said.

Viera High choral director Kevin Albright said the opportunity to perform with the professional touring group came when he got an email from the Brevard County Resources Office asking if any high school choirs would be willing to perform in the show. “Whenever these kind of things come about, which isn’t very often, we certainly want to take that opportunity to give our students that chance to be part of a professional production and to see everything that goes into it, and to be on that stage again,” Albright said. Members of the advanced class, known as the Viera High School Singers, appeared on the King Center stage two years ago, appearing with well-known Scottish singer Susan Boyle. Antonellis and senior Stephanie Schiller were on

the stage that night and it’s certainly something they won’t forget. “When we performed with Susan Boyle, it was definitely like, ‘Wow, we’re performing at the King Center in front of all these people,’” Schiller said. “It was a little nervewracking, but the fact that we were all doing it together was more calming.” Antonellis agreed. “It was cool to have people to lean back on because it’s really intimidating when you’re with an artist that’s so well known … you’re standing and all you see are bright lights and you see heads going all the way back,” she said. “It’s like you’re outnumbered.” Unlike the Susan Boyle performance, where the

first Viera player to win the state singles championship, she teamed with Izzie Diaz to win the Class 3A doubles title. Belaya eventually was named Miss Tennis by the Florida Dairy Farmers. The senior, who has signed to play at the University of Illinois, will be back to defend her titles along with Diaz, who is a junior and the No. 2 player in Viera’s lineup. Sophomore Amanda Sedaros, junior Hope Woodruff and junior Emily Li round out the Hawks’ top five. While trying to build for another big postseason run, Viera coach Maria Woodruff also has been trying to give other players — in particular sophomore Blakely Duke and junior Leeya Jomon — some valuable court time that will pay off in the future. “That’s what I’ve been focusing on this year,” Maria Woodruff said. “I know we’ve got a pretty solid team, but I want to get some of the other girls in. Last year, it was my first year of coaching, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. “This year, I know what

we’re going into, so it’s easier to work people in and that way, everybody can play. It makes it more exciting.” Viera’s boys have a new coach in John Lindheimer, who certainly is enjoying his role. The Hawks got off to a 10-1 start. “I’ve always wanted to coach, so this is a dream of mine. … I am so blessed to be coaching these guys,” Lindheimer said. “It’s such an honor and a privilege. They’re so talented.” The Hawks are loaded at the top with junior Gabe Diaz and senior Nick Fuchs. Freshman Griffin Lamp is playing at No. 3, followed by senior Matt Podzielinski, junior Matt Bean and senior John Shi. Sophomore Oskar Jiborn is a doubles specialist. Viera also should win a district title, adding to what already has been a successful season. “I run a no-cut program,” Lindheimer said. “We have 12 guys on the roster and every single one of these guys has played in and won at least one match for the varsity.” VV

Talented Tigers expect another district title BY CARL KOTALA

The Holy Trinity boys and girls tennis teams have a history of dominating their district opponents … and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon. Especially not this year. “We’ve got a super strong team again this year,” Tigers coach Mark Harrison said. “I expect us to do well. “…We’ve won districts the last three years in a row and we’re just as strong, maybe a little stronger now.” Three of Holy Trinity’s top boys are all underclassmen. Juniors Matt Ryan and Saurav Ghosal occupy the top two spots on the Holy Trinity ladder with senior Thomas Guyton at No. 3 and sophomore Bodie Cohen at No. 4. The rest of the Tigers’ lineup includes talented players such as Ludo Martinenghi, Zach McManus, Brandon Voepel, Satan Gutta and Thomas Stallard. Holy Trinity’s girls, meanwhile, also are strong at the top with Morgan McCarthy, Ashleigh Kutryb and Karina Popowycz in the first three spots. It all shapes up for what should be another successful run for the Tigers against Edgewood, Florida Prep, Melbourne Central Catholic, Merritt Island Christian, West Shore and Covenant Christian at the district tournament, which is set to take place April 10 through 13. After that, it’s on to the regional matches, which are set for April 18 and April 20. This year’s Class 1A state

tournament is scheduled for April 24 to 26 at Red Bug Lake Park in Casselberry and Sylvan Lake Park in Sanford. With a roster as deep and talented as the Tigers have, there are several players that should have a shot at reaching the state event. “I expect my top boys singles team to go to the state tournament and I expect my top girls — Morgan and Ashleigh — (to go as well). Viera lacrosse teams believe they’re on path to success BY CARL KOTALA

The key word for the Viera High boys and girls lacrosse teams to focus on this season is the same: Believe. “They’re talented, but I don’t know that they believe they’re as talented as they are,” Viera boys coach Charlie Crawford said. The Hawks, who won the district championship last season despite having graduated 15 seniors from the previous year, lost a close regular-season game to Merritt Island on this night. But that didn’t stop Crawford from believing his team has the goods to put it all together and make a deep postseason run. “It’s a good group,” he said. “We’re going to have good success this year. (Tonight’s loss) was a setback, but I feel like we’re going to win the district and then hopefully go further than we’ve ever gone (two rounds) in the playoffs.” Among the reasons for Crawford’s optimism is the play of high-scoring freshman Nate DePlancke and the work of other Hawks like Dylan Parilla, Jaxon Lenk and Jacob Wigley. Viera also features two sets of brothers with Julian

and Nick Rodriguez and Nate and his brother Brennen DePlancke. Nate DePlancke said he is enjoying playing on the same team with Brennen — a senior — and believes the Hawks can reach their potential if they can become more efficient on offense. “We need to take our time in the offense and not settle,” Nick DePlancke said. “Sometimes we try to push the ball too much and things just don’t work out. We need to work on not turning the ball over.”

While the boys team needs to believe and trust in its talent, the Viera girls team believes there is finally some stability in the program. Nick Bigerton is the fourth coach the Hawks have had in four seasons, and he is determined to get Viera into district title contention. “I’m trying to make it a fun environment where we can build something and ultimately get better,” Bigerton said. With several games to go in the regular season, Viera already had as many wins (four) as it did all of last season, including a dramatic 7-6 victory against Melbourne on Rylee Thomas'

Holy Trinity teams finish first, fourth in Odyssey of the Mind competition BY CARL KOTALA

A group of Holy Trinity students recently took part in a competition that challenged them to not only make use of what they have learned in school, but to also use their creativity both in group and individual settings … and to have some fun in the process. They nailed it. The Tigers took first and fourth place in Brevard County’s Odyssey of the Mind competition, which is open to third- and fourthgrade students. The firstplace team moves on to the state competition, which will take place April 8 at the University of Central Florida. “Odyssey of the Mind is a world-wide competition that uses open-ended problems given to students to problem

solve using their abilities and their creativity,” said Dipty Desai, a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) educator at Holy Trinity’s Lower Campus. Holy Trinity’s winning team consisted of Declin Mageau, Lloyd Robinson, Elle Canlas, Donovan Boesch and Sebastian O'Brien. The fourthplace team was made up of Maya Vallejo, Kate Schwin, Giana Theodoropoulous, Alina Zaidi and Violet Flores. There were two parts to the competition — a longterm project that began in October, and a spontaneous problem where teams had mere minutes to prepare. Scores from the long term and spontaneous problems were combined for the team score.

For the long-term project, the first-place team (coached by parent Duana Boyles) faced the challenge of “Catch Us If You Can.” “We had to build three vehicles,” said Boesch, a fourth grader. “We built a parking garage. We had to come up with a story and a script to go along with the cars in the garage.” The idea was to get the three vehicles to a secret meeting place while outmaneuvering a villain. The group used a car, a plane and a train. Boesch had previously built a Pinewood Derby car, a folded up paper airplane with a balloon for propulsion and a train. “It was complicated, but it was fun at the same time,” Boesch said. “I got to use tools that my parents wouldn’t let me use.” For Vallejo’s team (coached by her mother, Sweta), the long-term challenge was to come up with a “Superhero Cliffhanger.” “Basically, there’s a nemesis and the nemesis is trying to steal creativity,” Maya Vallejo said. “The super hero is trying to save it. There have to be three instances where the super hero stops the nemesis from stealing creativity and it has to end with a cliffhanger.” In the case of both projects, there is a limited budget.

“We didn’t buy any materials,” Vallejo said. “Everything was either from home (but) most of it was from recyclable material. (My friend Kate and I) went dumpster diving. We made an easel for an artist studio scene and we made goatees for the artists.” As for the spontaneous problem, Vallejo’s team was shown a picture of a dog in an astronaut suit. Without being able to collaborate, the students had to come up with an explanation for why the dog was wearing the suit. Boesch’s team received a

hands-on challenge. There were Tupperware containers with items such as a plush shark, golf balls, silverware, a Hess truck and building blocks. The items were assigned points, and they had to be stacked. Anything touching the floor earned zero points. If that sounds like fun, well, it was. “I enjoy Odyssey because you don’t just follow the rules — you think outside of the box,” Maya Vallejo said. “(You take what you learn in school and) you turn it into something amazing.” VV

Viera teams place first, second at Manatee Bowl BY CARL KOTALA

In six previous trips to a regional ocean science academic competition known as the Manatee Bowl, Viera High’s teams had always performed well, but never taken home the big prize. So imagine the excitement when this year’s final came down to two teams ... Viera’s A Team vs. Viera’s B Team. “We knew Viera was coming home with a victory no matter what,” Viera senior B Team member Brennan Chase said. “We just didn’t know who it was going to be.” Viera’s B Team actually beat the A Team in the first contest, but since it was a doubleelimination event — and the A Team came in undefeated during the preliminaries — the two sides had to face off again. And this time, it was the A Team that came out on top at the event held at Florida

Atlantic in February. So not only did Viera win the competition where students test their ocean science knowledge through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended, team challenge questions, but the Hawks finished first and second. “It was pretty cool,” senior A Team captain Griffin Pharmer said. “I really didn’t know whether or not we were going to win it when we first went in there. “I mean, I was confident in our team, but just to know we actually got through was pretty amazing.” Not only did the team of Mitchel Necessary, Alex Krestan, Pharmer, Eric Beck and Hannah Howe make history by winning the school’s first Manatee Bowl, the group is heading to Oregon State University for the National Ocean Sciences

Sunrise tours will be offered both days through advanced registration and sunset tours will be offered Saturday night through prior registration. Other scheduled activities will include guided walking and van tours of the wetlands, tours of the adjacent water reclamation facility and workshops in both wildlife photography and birding. At noon on Saturday, April 22, the winners of the Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards youth art, photo and essay contests will be announced. The first-, second- and third-place winners in all categories will have their work displayed. Checks for the winning entries will be awarded. Corbeil, who died in late 2013, co-wrote a popular column called "Parting Shot" with his wife, Charlotte, for the Viera Voice. A few photos complemented each column. He was a co-founder of the Viera Wetlands Festival. Charlotte Corbeil resumed the column after his death and now calls it "Charlotte's Web-Spinning Tales." She welcomes budding photographers to supply photos to complement the column. Certification of the site’s butterfly garden, overlooking the wetlands' central lake, as an official Monarch Waystation also is planned. Many of the festival’s tours will be led by volunteer Wetland Rangers, who will share their knowledge and experience of the wetlands and its inhabitants. Additional guides include local photography notables. On Saturday, an advanced

sunrise photo workshop will be led by Pat “Whitey” Bryan, and a sunset photo walk will be conducted by Patty Corapi. Also scheduled for Saturday, a sunset tour by Florida Master Naturalist Ivan Green will follow the evening installation of a bat house and presentation by Shari Blissett-Clark, president of Florida Bat Conservancy. Kimberly Novak of Novak Designs, LLC will sponsor a fairy garden contest. Depending on the number of entrants, she will give out prizes to the top two or three entrants. The fairy gardens will be displayed Saturday and Sunday, with the winners to be announced at noon on Saturday. All proceeds will be donated back to the wetlands. Throughout the festival, nature-related exhibitors and food vendors will be present. The Viera Wetlands Nature Festival is sponsored by The Viera Company and Viera Community Institute to help raise funds in support of public access and environmental management programs at the Viera Wetlands. Admittance to the festival is free. While registering for tours and classes online, donations in support of the wetlands are welcome, but are not required. Some tours and workshops are limited by available seating or other considerations and early registration is encouraged. The Viera-Suntree Little League will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Saturday. Opening Day ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. on the fields at Viera Regional Park. Among the guests for one of Brevard County’s most successful Little League programs will be former presidents Jeff Small, Cris Smith, John Glendenning and Jeff Piersall.

School project spruces up Ralph Williams Elementary School BY WENDY SCHEURING

Beautifying the school grounds this school year has been a top priority for Erica Zegles, the PTO president for Ralph Williams Elementary School. So, she started making phone calls. She started writing letters. It didn’t take her long to find a landscaping

company willing to visit the school, survey the grounds and offer its advice on selecting sustainable, lowmaintenance yet beautiful plants that would make the school grounds come alive. Tropic-Care of Florida donated and delivered crotons, foxtail ferns, society garlic, shrubs and cord grass, as well as mulch and soil for the school’s new garden club.

With such a generous donation, there was work to do. The grounds would need to be weeded. The new plants planted and watered. Zegles sent an email request and was delightfully swamped with responses from eager and willing volunteers. It took half a day to weed the beds. Then, a couple of weeks later, 40 volunteers spent an entire

Iconic musical ‘Grease’ will be performed at Viera High BY CARL KOTALA

It’s an iconic classic, and it’s coming to the Viera High School Auditorium. Yep, "Grease" is the word. Pass it on. The Viera High Theater Arts Department will take you back to Rydell High in 1959 with their version of the hit musical with three 7 p.m. shows from April 28 to 30. There also will be a 2 p.m. matinee on April 30. “Grease is a classic,” Viera Theater Arts teacher Eloise Evans wrote in an email. “I’ve followed the show since it first came out in the ’70s. The show strikes a chord in the heart of all generations because the rock music and the values were simple and everyone gets what being “cool” is all about.” Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, “Grease” uses music and dance to follow the lives of 1950s teenagers as they experience the complexities of love, peer pressure and their own values and beliefs. Not only does the production feature a talented cast, but six students — Buffy Chappotin (Frenchy), Alyssa DeNardis (Rizzo),

Allison McDowell (Jan), Devyn Mercer (Patty), Daniel Roberts (Vince Fontaine) and Allison Reed (Marty) — also are choreographing the musical. Josh Velazquez (Teen Angel) and Emily Simons are assistant directors/stage managers. The lead roles of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski are played by Luke Adams and Lainey MacKinnon. Other cast members include: Jack Adams (Roger), Trevor Bickham (Kenickie), Dominic Hernandez (Doody), John Sayut (Sonny), Matthew Cardillo (Johnny Casino), Jordan Barnett (Eugene) and Isabel McCoy as Miss Lynch. The growing proliferation of blockbuster movies inspired by comics means the industry is more than relevant to today's youth. Beyond the plethora of dream jobs youngsters could pursue is something more basic. They are the gateway to love for reading, which in turn is the pathway to learning. Tossing clumps of soil from gold-painted shovels on a chilly, breezy morning, officials broke ground March 15 on Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, the first key component of the future Viera Town Center. The planned four-story hotel, with 116 rooms and suites, is across from Chili's restaurant in The Avenue Viera and will also be known as Viera Town Center Hotel. It should be open in January, said Kevin Arcieri, general manager of Hampton Inn Melbourne/Viera. Todd Pokrywa, senior vice president of land use planning and development for The Viera Co., said the town center will offer “a variety of new and unique shopping venues, modern-style living and luscious green space, but most importantly a centralized location for the entire community as a gathering place.” With tourism on the rise and the United States Specialty Sports Association’s recent move to nearby Space Coast Stadium, the hotel helps fill an increasing demand for hotel rooms in Viera and Brevard County, Pokrywa said. County Commissioner Curt Smith said the hotel will

provide a “synergy” with the USSSA, the world’s largest amateur sports organization. The USSSA is moving from Kissimmee to the stadium, which formerly hosted the Washington Nationals for spring training and the Brevard County Manatees of the Florida State League from April through early September. The Nationals and Houston Astros moved to a new stadium complex in West Palm Beach this year, and the Manatees relocated to the USSSA’s old headquarters at Osceola County Stadium and were renamed the Florida Fire Frogs. “They’re going to guarantee 175 game days, but more than that, for the first two years they’re going to guarantee 75,000 room nights in the motels and hotels here in Brevard County,” Smith said of the USSSA. “I was one of the people who was sorry to see the Nationals go, but the Nationals and the Marlins (who conducted spring

Margarita D’Angelo prefers that her new real estate brokerage focus on providing quality service, not amassing clients. “I wanted to create more of a boutique real estate company,” said the Viera resident, who launched Sotera Living of Brevard LLC as a home-based business in March. “My vision statement is personalized service, quality results.” A longtime court reporter who owned a courtreporting business in Virginia before selling it and moving to Florida, D’Angelo hoped to take her skills and start a new career. Assisting her realtor daughter Lianna in Winter Park, she found real estate to be a good fit. “A court reporter is a trained listener, with high contractual skills," D’Angelo said. “Being around attorneys, I’ve learned negotiating skills.

In a study entitled The New Plastics Economy — Rethinking the future of plastics, the World Economic Forum reports that “while delivering many benefits, the current plastics economy also has important drawbacks that are becoming more apparent by the day.” Among the drawbacks, we have: • Plastic production is increasing — it has grown more than 20 times during the past 50 years — from 15 million tonnes (metric tons) in 1964 to 311 million tonnes in 2014, and it is expected to double again during the next 20 years. • More than 90 percent of plastics produced are derived from virgin fossil feedstocks, which have a significant carbon impact on the environment. • Only 14 percent of plastic packaging is collected for

recycling; the recycling rate for plastics in general is even lower. • Most packaging plastics produced are for a onetime use. • At least 8 million tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean — which is equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute. • In a business-as-usual scenario, the ocean is expected to contain 1 tonne of plastic for every 3 tonnes of fish by 2025. By 2050, there will be more plastics than fish (by weight).

Sleep apnea now the new 'silent killer' BY WENDY SCHEURING

Dominic Roppa, DDS, co-owner and operator of Smile Viera Cosmetic Dentistry with his wife Kara Marshall-Roppa, DDS, has embarked on a new business, SleepBizz LLC. When patients visit Smile Viera, they automatically get pre-screened for sleep apnea, free of charge. The process involves filling out a questionnaire and taking an easy-to-use take-home sleep test, if the probability of having sleep apnea is high. Results are downloaded into the office computer and read by a third-party sleep medicine doctor. It’s billed as Brevard County’s biggest Easter egg hunt. East Coast Christian Center Viera and Viera Pizza have partnered to present Easter Egg ’Stravaganza from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 15 at Viera High School, 6103 Stadium Parkway. The free event is open to children up to age 12, who will scramble to gather more than 10,000 plastic eggs scattered across the Viera High School football field. All participants will receive a gift bag with candy, and kids get a special bag for collecting golden eggs. There’s also free pizza from Viera Pizza, games, bounce houses, music, snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy.

“Having over 10,000 eggs is a massive event,” said Christian Hurston, director of student ministries at the church. “We wanted to go all out.” Hundreds of dollars of gift cards will be given away, with the grand prize a free ride on a helicopter from Beach Helicopter Tours of Merritt Island, Hurston said. Separate egg hunts will be offered for children up to 2 years old and from 3 to 5. Parents can register their kids for the egg hunts and qualify for the helicopter-ride prize by going to vieraegghunt.eventbrite.com. Children can visit with the Easter Bunny and take part in an egg hunt, which starts at 6:30 p.m. The hunt will be broken down by age. Kids eat free with the purchase of each adult entrée.
