Garbage can be beautiful. That’s the message that Marcia Booth has been trying to convey since launching the nonprofit organization Recycle Brevard in 2011. “Only 30 percent of people in Brevard recycle. I just knew there had to be a way to improve that,” she said. Since her own recycling awakening, Booth has been looking for creative ways to raise awareness about better management of trash in the county — and she’s making an impact with kids. The Waste Me Not Recycled Art Show hosted by Recycle Brevard will give kindergarten through 12th-grade students a chance to show off their creativity. It will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Community Room located between LOFT and Francesca’s at The Avenue Viera. “The main goal is to make kids think about waste and how to avoid it. We don’t see

W Viera Voice | October 2015

how what we throw away could be reused or could help other people,” Booth said. Students can enter by creating artwork from recycled materials or creating 8.5” X 11” posters featuring the theme. The contest entry form asks that students create pieces that “reflect the importance of practicing the 3Rs and avoiding waste through creative use of items that were going to be discarded.” Entries should also be able to easily sit on top of a counter or hang on a board.

Parents of healthy children support the March of Dimes

BY MARY BROTHERTON

When Gregory Stephens, the director of the Space Coast Division of the Florida Chapter of the March of Dimes, asked Michelle Naberhaus to chair a fundraising event, she didn’t understand why. Naberhaus said when she told Stephens she had never used the March of Dimes, he explained how research over the years resulted in her access to resources for healthy babies. “Although I had high risk pregnancies, my husband and I were blessed that each of our five babies were born healthy. It was not until we became involved with the organization that we realized just how much we benefited from the March of Dimes and its research efforts. I can’t think of a more important cause than advocating for healthy babies, and it is clear that preventing prematurity benefits everyone by lowering health care costs.” Better educated, Naberhaus said she felt compelled to work as the chair of the 7th annual Signature Chefs Auction for March of Dimes that takes place in the Wakefield Ballroom at Hilton Rialto in Melbourne from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. At the 2014 event, Josh Eslinger, the executive chef at Crush Eleven, was voted People’s Choice, so he is the 2015 event lead chef. He helped direct the choices that led to the selection of this year’s chefs who will bring a total of nine of Brevard County’s

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in the following grade groups: K-3, 4-6, 7-8 and 9-12. There will also be an award for “Most Creative” and the “People’s Choice.” In addition, Recycle Brevard will collect gently used household items to donate to House2Homes from the GAP Ministry. The items will be given to families who need them. Art show entries are due by Nov. 15 and can be submitted to Kim Farson, who can be reached at 321-848-2387 or kimfarson@yahoo.com. Students who submit an entry will receive a free ticket to the show and the first parent or guardian receives a ticket at 50 percent off. General admission tickets are $10. Popular radio personalities Mike and Mindy will serve as emcees and Sheriff Wayne Ivey has agreed to return as auctioneer. “Top bidders will win some awesome trips to Disney, Sea World or a private home in N.C.,” Naberhaus said. Other auction gifts are unique private chef dining experiences, golf and deep sea fishing packages or the option to have Santa Claus at your holiday party. Arnold Air is a GOLD SPONSOR for the 2015 Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival 2015 VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins

Susan O’Hara and puppet friends will tell thrilling stories at the Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival Oct. 17 at The Avenue Viera. BY KATIE PARSONS

Professional storyteller Susan O’Hara loves to see the emotions on her audience members’ faces when she’s on stage performing one of her favorite tales. “I’ve seen tears in kids’ eyes during a sad part, or their eyes get really wide during a scary part,” O’Hara said. “It’s really such an interactive experience.” For 18 years, O’Hara has traversed Brevard County using her gift of performance and love of literacy to share stories with people of all ages. On October 17, O’Hara will provide a Harvest Story Time at the Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival at the Avenue Viera. O’Hara promises an exciting harvest-theme story that engages audience members. “Around the holidays, I really like to tell family stories, and maybe add in some history stories,” she said. For O’Hara, telling stories is more than just a job. She believes in the art of storytelling and wants to pass it along to the next generation. “We are losing the oral arts.

A lot of kids are happy to just get online, but we need that person-to-person contact,” O’Hara said. “When I see kids connecting with the story I’m telling, then I know I’m doing my job.” O’Hara provides her storytelling services in a variety of capacities around the county. The third Saturday of every month she performs at the Central Brevard Library from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at no charge to visitors. She is often asked to come to schools, too. Through the years, O’Hara has also spent time volunteering with local literacy groups. O’Hara has had former listeners approach her as adults and tell her how much they enjoyed her performances as a child, and how much those stories impacted them. For her, storytelling is a passion. “When we speak and we speak from our hearts, those stories can change lives,” O’Hara said. For more information on the storytelling services O’Hara provides, go to storyhub.com. For more information on the Harvest Festival, go to page A13 or call 321-2421235. VV

Holy Trinity golf teams shooting for regional bids

BY CARL KOTALA

The Holy Trinity boys and girls golf teams have a similar goal this season — play well enough in the district tournament to get to the regionals. A year after finishing second to Edgewood, and with all of their players returning, the Holy Trinity boys would have to be considered one of the favorites to win the district championship.

The girls, meanwhile, have got a tough task with district newcomer Cocoa Beach and old rival Melbourne Central Catholic to contend with. Still, if the Tigers can beat out Edgewood and West Shore, the third spot — and a chance to advance — would be within their grasp. “It’s a possibility for us to be in the top three and that would get us to regionals and that would be a very nice experience for the girls,”

Edgewood and Cocoa Beach, the Tigers would face a stiff challenge in the regionals from small-school powers such as Circle Christian and Trinity Prep. Of course, the Tigers have broken through before and Vilegenthart believes the team can do it again if everybody is playing well. That takes us back to his stated goal of seeing everyone improve throughout the year. “There are a few tweaks that everyone needs to work on to improve their game, whether it be their short game or getting off the tee better,” Vilegenthart said. “The parts aren’t all there yet, but they’re coming together.” VV

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

It’s an exciting time for both the Viera High boys and girls cross country teams. They both have high expectations for this season. BY CARL KOTALA

Now in his fourth season of running cross country at Viera High, Ryan Miller can say unequivocally that this Hawks team is the best one he’s been on. “It’s definitely the best, the fastest team we’ve had,” the Viera senior said. “We’re all close to each other. I think it will be the best year since I’ve been here.” The Viera girls are looking pretty strong, too. In fact, coach Kate Howick sounded quite excited about her team’s prospects for this year. “I think we’re shaping up to have one of the most successful seasons we’ve had in the history of cross

country at Viera High,” Howick said. “I firmly believe that.” Freshman Sammie Pippett certainly created a buzz for the Viera program when she won the JV race at the Jim Ryun Season Opener Celebration in Lakeland in her first high school race. Pippett has since moved up to varsity where she joins co-captains Raena Karl and Melinda Schmitz along with Abbi Little, Anna Martin and sisters Evelyn and Claire Mitchell. Karl, a junior, said she and her teammates have more confidence this season after training together throughout the summer and have a good attitude. “We try our best, but we

always make sure to have fun with it, too,” Karl said. “We

Either accomplishment would be a first for the girls program. Viera’s boys, coming off a 19th-place finish in the Class 4A state meet last season, should benefit from a drop

Miller said he was in the best shape he has ever been in to start a season, which once again, should translate to more confidence on the course. “It definitely helps,” Abel said. “I think a lot of it is just building that bond as a team, because you’re going to win or lose as a team. Howie-in-the-Hills could be the site of Viera High School golf history if both teams get their way this season. The Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort will host this year’s Class 3A State Championships. Viera’s girls are looking to become the first team in school history to win backto-back state titles — and the Hawks have everybody back from last year’s championship team. The boys, meanwhile, are shooting for what would be their first state crown. “We’ve got to win it all,” Hawks coach Paul Bentley said. “We’re shooting for the win.” With five of their top six players back from a team that finished sixth at last year’s state tournament, Viera’s boys would certainly appear to have a shot at contending again in 2015. Sophomore Calvin Sierota is one of the top players in the state and the team is loaded with veterans like senior Ryan Rozic, junior Tyler Greek and seniors Kyle Decenzo, Mitchell Albright and Garth Savage. Bentley said the improvement of the entire team — particularly Albright and Savage — means the Hawks will have six players capable of shooting 75 or lower. Last year’s team had five. “We’re better as a team,” Rozic said. “We’re all friends. We’ve all known each other for years so it’s just one last ride together.” Viera’s girls, meanwhile, have also seen improvement from players like sophomore Trinity Falzone, who has been alternating at the No. 5 spot with senior Katie Arnott. Junior Samantha Brimhall and sophomore Dayna Owens are also better and it was a big summer for senior top players Taylor Rajeski (South Carolina) and Sophie Liu (Iowa) who both committed to Division I colleges. “I think we’re definitely capable of a repeat,” Brimhall said. “We all have to work really hard and we all have to play our best to accomplish that.” Viera finished second in its first two tournaments against some of the top programs in the state with Liu winning individual medalist honors at the First Academy Invitational played at the MetroWest Golf Club in Orlando. Liu has been on a tear. She won a Florida Junior Tour event in May, won the FSGA Girls Junior Amateur Championship by nine strokes in early July and qualified for the USGA Girls Junior

Championships, where she was the first-round leader. While the Hawks should be the clear favorite to repeat, they aren’t taking anything for granted. “The thing is, we knew we could be good this year,”

coach Greg Ford said. “But the other teams know it, too, so that puts an even bigger target on our back. If we can withstand some of that, we’ll be fine. But we’re a year older and more mature. I know we can withstand it.” VV

SUNTREENews

Pay now or pay later for healthy childhood

BY LINDA WIGGINS

Children are worth a million dollars each, early childhood development expert Dr. Sally Shinn of Brevard Public Schools likes to say. She addressed community leaders in advance of the 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 Great Tastes at Suntree children’s charity fundraiser of the Suntree Rotary Club. “If we do the right thing, children will become producers and generate tax dollars to give back to the community,” Shinn said at the Sept. 10 sponsor-recruitment breakfast at Suntree Country Club, the Rotary’s home venue and site of this month’s popular event. “If not, this (million dollars) is what it will cost us

VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins

Brevard Pubic Schools homeless students coordinator Dr. Sally Shinn told community leaders at a sponsor recruitment breakfast for the Oct. 17 Great Tastes at Suntree that children are worth a million dollars in costs or assets depending on how well childhood needs are addressed, as Gary Cain of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida and family therapist Tracey McLaughlin of Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children listen.

The district is in the process of counting homeless students and is on track to surpass last year’s number of 1,845 students, she added. Great Tastes will benefit three charities: • Promise in Brevard, a community slated to break ground at 11 a.m. Nov. 9 in West Melbourne to house and employ adults with disabilities, including those now living with family in the Suntree/ Viera area. • The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, earmarked for the Temple Terrace Branch and Teen Center in Melbourne.

• The Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children in Suntree, providing emergency to transitional housing in a faith-based setting in exchange for a commitment toward positive change. Trauma experienced in childhood can result in genetic damage, Shinn said, citing new research. Thus, investment in intervention to break this cycle in future generations is a worthy cause, she added. “Divorce, physical abuse, watching your mother be abused, sexual abuse, incarceration, homelessness, suicide in the family,” Shinn said, “this can all lead to sleeplessness and depression and that in turn can lead to physical health risks that can also be costly to the healthcare system. The cost savings for addressing these issues continues to add up.” Event emcee TV News 13 reporter Greg Pallone said “when you realize we're all affected, that's when it hits home.” “But that also means we can all work together toward a solution,” he added. Tickets for Great Tastes are $30 and include samples of favorite dishes provided by top restaurants across the greater Suntree/Viera area that compete for bragging rights. Suntree Master HOA welcomes new GM

VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins

New Suntree Master Homeowners Association general manager Todd Foley started the job after Labor Day. BY KATIE PARSONS

Suntree is one of Brevard County’s most sought-after neighborhoods and that is no happy accident. Meticulous planning has gone into the community that exists today and that same sort of forethought is important for continued growth. Todd Foley plans to play a big role in the future of Suntree. On Sept. 8, he took the reins as the general manager of the Suntree Master Homeowners Association, Inc. Foley brings a wealth of knowledge about real estate and community management from his former position as a partner at Towers Management Group. In that role, Foley interacted with more than 100 community associations in Central Florida and provided growth guidance and support. He has served as the president of the board for more than 50 associations. Foley was attracted to Suntree because it is already thriving and has a lot of potential. “Growth can no longer be measured in Suntree with the addition of new homes, communities, or commercial buildings, as significant undeveloped land does not exist within the master plan,” he said. “Suntree will thrive by

continuing its extraordinary neighborhood events, updating its many amenities, and ensuring maintenance of homes, lakes and parks that are the envy of non-Suntree residents.” The fact that he lives locally gave him an advantage over other candidates. “Todd was the most qualified of the candidates interviewed. He is a longtime resident of Brevard County and very familiar with the Suntree community,” said Forrest Miles, board president of the Suntree Master Homeowners Association. In addition to his community management experience, Foley is a general contractor and pilot. He is a U.S. Army veteran with a degree in coordination management. His wife, Maylanie, is a mammography and X-ray technician at the Viera VA Clinic, and his daughter, Cecelia, attends Viera High School. The family lives on a horse ranch near Cocoa. “Beyond it being the best location in Brevard, Suntree benefits from a well-conceived master plan of communities, lakes, roadways, parks and Suntree Country Club. It would be difficult for any prospective buyer not to find a community and home in Suntree that fills their needs and wishes,” Foley said. VV

SCHOOL

DeLaura students receive anti-bullying message BY CARL KOTALA

Don’t let a bully steal your happiness. That was the crux of a message delivered to DeLaura Middle School students last month by motivational speaker Chris Holloway. A former student at Satellite High School and a graduate of Palm Bay High, the 48-year-old Holloway has dwarfism and stands just 4-foot-4. That hasn’t stopped him from having an incredibly successful, public life. Holloway has appeared on MTV and World Wrestling Entertainment, where he was known as the “Little Boogeyman” during his time with the company. He has been speaking to children about bullying for

the past 15 years and shared his message with DeLaura students, which include children from Suntree and parts of Viera. “I wouldn’t have done a lot of things I’ve done in my life if I would have allowed the bullying to take my happiness away and stop me from my goals and dreams,” he told the students. “What I’m trying to tell you today is don’t let a bully take you away from your happiness. Understand that if you have respect for yourself and you love who you are, that won’t bother you. You’ll keep moving.” Holloway shared stories about being bullied in school and encouraged students to respect their classmates and speak up and not be silent bystanders. DeLaura principal Bobby

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Some people can talk about it, but Chris Holloway lived it. The one-time WWE wrestler spoke to DeLaura Middle School students about bullying last month in two inspiring sessions held at the Satellite High School auditorium.

Pruett, who had heard Holloway speak previously, felt the students would get a lot out of the session. “We’ve got great kids, a great community,” Pruett said. “This is an important message for the kids to hear. They really enjoy this kind of stuff. It hits home to them.”

Seventh-grader Ashley Armitage said she thought it was a “great opportunity to be here and to listen to (Holloway’s) presentation” while another seventhgrader, Sarah Rozycki said she learned to “just speak up when you can” and added she will now be more likely

to say something if she sees bullying occurring. Eighth-grader Josh Arnold said he took from the session, “stand up for what you think and don’t let people bully others. … You’ve got to make sure you love yourself before you can do anything else.” VV

Creating scarebot gives team robot practice BY GEORGE WHITE

Viera Charter School’s ‘Scarebot’ to compete in the Scarecrow Stroll, see page A13, has a mind of its own, or seems to, thanks to the

creative ingenuity of the school’s seventh grade robot team, the Pink Pelicans. Now in its second year, the team competes in the FIRST program (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and

PERSONALIZED EYE CARE

Technology). Team members include Cody Rooke, Parker DuVall, Emily Dusenbury, Nick Bowen, Zach Lannon and Brandon Isenman. The Pelicans went to state competition last year at the

elementary school level. This year, they have their sights on the next level, competing with high school teams, said coach and school volunteer Connie Rooke. Also coaching is Belinda Lannon. “They are very energetic, very smart, a fun group of kids. We’re taking them up a notch and they’ll be competing with kids all the way up to 12th grade,” Rooke said. The scarebot entry is great because the teams have to engineer and create designs following the rules. “We are trying to use recycled materials as much as possible,” Rooke said. “One of the fathers works for a computer company that makes circuit boards and he gave

them all kinds of connectors and wire and all kinds of stuff. The other idea was taking apart one of their toys and getting the voicebox out. “This is great for them because the season for robotics just started. It’s a perfect warm up for them,” she said. The scarebot, sponsored by Wayne Anderson Insurance Agency, also helps the team with the FIRST program requirements to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in the schools. “They get to do something fun for the school, hopefully raise some money for the robotics program, and then they can promote STEM,” she said. Gov. Rick Scott appeared in Brevard to sign the All American Flag Act bill Sept. 21 at Viera High School, where students lobbied for the legislation during the past two school years that was put in motion starting in 2013. The law requires government entities across the state to purchase their U.S. flags in America from American-made parts. “I always encourage the students I meet to go into politics,” Scott told a standing-room-only audience in the VHS auditorium filled with local and state legislators, all members of the Brevard County School Board, community leaders, students and parents, and a full contingent of television and print media. “I tell them that if they are not in office, someone else will be there in that spot with different views than theirs, and they will miss out on that opportunity to share their ideas.” Many of the students experienced the making of the law before they were even old enough to vote. “We are beyond thrilled at the accomplishments of our students,” said VHS senior Army JROTC instructor retired Lt. Col. Tim Thomas. The bill fell short of approval last year and former VHS teacher Matt Susin, faculty sponsor of the project, partnered with Thomas to drum up support

from veterans and seniors to bolster the students’ approach to legislators. “This didn’t happen without our veterans,” Susin told attendees. Rep. Ritch Workman, R-Suntree, sponsored the bill the first year, but his house leadership position kept him from doing so this session. Rep. Bob Cortes, R-Central Florida, took over for Workman and garnered support required for its passage in this year’s session. Sen. Thad Altman led the charge in the senate. Susin and Thomas rallied supporters back home and led teams to Tallahassee several times to press for support.

Andrew Matos, a student at Eau Gallie High School, came up with the idea in Susin’s class in the Jefferson Awards for Public Service Club. Susin later taught at VHS and sponsored a Jefferson Club there, continuing work on the project. After Susin left the teaching profession last year, Thomas took over as project faculty guide, with Susin remaining aboard as a community volunteer. “It was a fantastic experience every step of the way,” VHS Jefferson Club American Flag Act lead Tim Lancaster said at the event. “I’ll remember today for the rest of my life.” VV

Hats off and hats on to first responders

First responders honored at Viera High BY CARL KOTALA

On the 14th anniversary of 9/11, Viera High honored First Responders during halftime of the Hawks’ game against Merritt Island. With the help of the school’s JROTC and a member of the band who played taps, the First Responders were honored in a moving ceremony that took place on the track in front of the Viera fans. Among those on hand were retired members of the New York Police Department who were at Ground Zero on that fateful day. A poem was read and the crowd gave the honorees a thunderous ovation as chants of “USA! USA!” echoed throughout Hawk Stadium. VV

In honor of Patriot Day and to remember September 11, students from teacher Tiffany Letawa’s second-grade class at Quest Elementary School wrote letters to the first responders of the Viera area. The letters were delivered by Letawa to the local Brevard County Fire Rescue Station 80 in Suntree, who in return provided 21 fire hats to the students. Letters were also delivered to the Melbourne Police Department. “These letters were written to show appreciation to our community servicemen for all that they do,” Letawa said.

Prodigy Talent Training students take a break from workshop training during a recent trip to Hollywood, Calif. BY LINDA WIGGINS

A group of students from Prodigy Talent Training in Suntree traveled to Hollywood, Calif., this summer to attend workshops headed by well-known actors, casting directors, commercial and talent agents, managers and producers. Future trips are in the works. “The trip was terrific. The variety of workshops we attended provided us with a lot of information, from acting to what agents expect and more insight into the business,” said participant Marulyn O’Day of Melbourne. “I’m looking forward to the next trip.” Group members, who ranged in age from children to seniors, learned proper audition techniques, acting tips and insider advice from working professionals in the film and television industry during the trip, dubbed Prodigy: On Location!, Prodigy owner Jonathan McFadden said. “The trip was educationoriented with a little fun thrown in,” said McFadden, who is also an actor and law student. The group first met with acting coach, director and casting director Jeff Passero, who critiqued members’ assigned scenes. Members then auditioned for talent manager and producer Ryan Glasgow of the Bohemia Group. Commercial agent Lori Herman explained what she looks for in potential clients and differences between commercial acting and film/television acting. Actors Tony Robinette and Ann Michael Smith described a typical day in an L.A. actor’s life. Karen Maruyama hosted an improv session at the Groundlings

vieravoice.com

Improv Theater, while actor Raymond Patterson gave members scenes for practice on “cold reads” and actor Ben Caine explained how to prepare for an audition as well as how to stay motivated and positive in this difficult line of work. Members gave a threeminute audition during talent agent Tanya Kleckner’s workshop — some of whom were invited to be signed by Kleckner for representation — then met once more with Glasgow at his request after he had reviewed audition tapes from his first session. Glasgow said he would forward members’ resumes and headshots to his Atlanta office, McFadden said. Members already are planning a trip to Atlanta, which has become a moviemaking hot spot, McFadden noted. Prodigy Talent Training is a full-service studio featuring

a variety of skills taught in each class, including improv, acting techniques, scene study, auditioning and practice with cold readings. Other tips include how to book yourself, help with your headshot, filming production of your class scenes to be made into a promotional reel and much more. Prodigy is now accepting new students. McFadden’s students have appeared on Broadway, in commercials, USA Network’s “Graceland,” and in such films as “The Hunger Games,” the “Divergent” series, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and many more. Prodigy can be found on Facebook at Prodigy Talent Training and on Instagram at prodigy_talent_training. At Viera Comics!, heroes have a new home

Are you a fan of Superman? Crazy about Captain America? Then Viera Comics! is your new, not-so-secret headquarters. The comic book shop, owned by Peter Pappas, opened Sept. 2 at 7640 N. Wickham Road, Suite 108 and plans a day-long grandopening for Saturday, Oct. 10. Fans can check it out Oct. 1 through 15 during the Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll when they come to see the fun4spacecoastkids. com Darth Scarecrow, before it is moved to the Harvest Festival at The Avenue Viera Saturday, Oct. 17. See the special ballot-Stroll map pullout on page A13 for full details. It’s the first comic book store in the Suntree-Viera area, and it fulfills Pappas’ longtime dream. “I’ve always collected comics, I’ve always had a passion for it,” said Pappas, who moved to Viera with his wife, Kerry, and their two young children after running the Nautilus Diner in Madison, N.J., with his brother for 20 years. “I’ve been shopping in comic book shops for the past 30 years. “I just got sick of the restaurant business and the cold weather in New Jersey and we decided to move to Florida. Beach. So we ended up getting a house in Viera, and then soon after we got here, my wife and I talked about it and I decided to take on this venture. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” Stocked with new and collector comic books from top companies DC and Marvel as well as books from independent publishers and collections bought from customers, the nearly 1,700-square-foot Viera Comics also offers graphic novels and trade paperback collections of

single-issue comics, Pappas said. New comics arrive every Wednesday, and Pappas will pull customers’ favorite titles for them to pick up. “We have a lot of cool toys and knick-knacks,” Pappas said. “We’ll have a lot of nice action figures. And we also even have a little lounge area with a TV playing comic book movies or ‘Star Wars’ all day long so people can get a cup of coffee and sit down and watch a movie if they want.” Unlike most comic book shops, Viera Comics! sports

a “nice, clean, boutique look,” Pappas said. “We even have some local artists who have put their art on the walls,” he said. “I really put a lot of care and effort into making this place look upscale and nice, and people have noticed and have let me know that.” The box-office successes of comic book superhero movies has drawn customers to Pappas’ shop. “The movies definitely help,” he said. “Just today, two customers came in and said they’ve been watching the movies the past few

They’re all great in their own way.” Viera Comics!’s grand opening will feature costume contests, face painting and other fun activities, with many special events on the horizon, Pappas said. “On Halloween, we’re going to have HalloweenFest, which is similar to Free Comic Book Day where we’ll have some free comics to hand out to people,” he said. Hundreds flock to The Fresh Market’s grand opening BY MIKE GAFFEY

Susan and Mike Shub of Suntree are such big fans of The Fresh Market, they were first in line when the gourmet grocer at 6385 N. Wickham Road opened its doors on Sept. 16 at the new Pineda Landings shopping center. “We like the store, we like the products, we like the people,” said Susan Shub, who often traveled with her husband to the closest Fresh Market in Orlando. “This is right down the street.” As the doors opened at 8 a.m., hundreds of shoppers streamed inside to get a first glimpse of the store, shop, collect freebies, watch chef demonstrations and sample food items. They were greeted by store manager Mike Paholik. “I’m very excited by the amount of people that showed up today,” Paholik said. “It’s amazing. It’s really nice to see that Melbourne has welcomed us so well. You don’t know what’s going to happen, who’s going to show up or how many, so this is an overwhelming start to the day. Hopefully, it continues all day.”

VIERA VOICE Mike Gaffey

Mike and Susan Shub of Suntree were first in line for the grand opening of The Fresh Market in Suntree.

The first 1,000 customers received a reusable shopping bag and a sample bag of fresh coffee. Visitors also could sign up for a raffle of $100 gift cards. The 24,839-square-foot store is the Greensboro, N.C.based chain’s first Brevard County location and its 41st in Florida. About 90 employees were hired, said Melvin Hamilton, director of new stores. Instead of a traditional ribbon cutting, the store

presented the “Cracking of the Parmesan,” as Tara Harmon, a certified cheese professional from Palm Beach County, split a large cheese wheel and handled out samples. Founded in 1982, The Fresh Market tries to create the look and feel of a European-style openair market stocked with fresh meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables and hard-to-find items from around the globe. Visitors can enjoy classical

music and free samples of coffee while they shop. Many items are displayed in open bins rather than in packaging. The store offers more than 30 whole-bean coffee brands and a large selection of decaffeinated blends, a deli stocked with a variety of meats and more than 200 domestic and imported cheeses, wines, a bakery, a section for candies, nuts and trail mix, and a produce section featuring more than

400 items, as well as a large section of organic, locally or regionally grown items. Signs are marked to let customers know whether a produce item is organic or conventional and where it was grown, said Logan Holcomb, field marketing manager for The Fresh Market. The Fresh Market is the anchor for the 50,000-square-foot Pineda Landings at North Wickham Road and Jordan Blass Drive. Other tenants will include a Zaxby’s restaurant, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Allure Nails, Expedia Travel, OrangeTheory Fitness, California Tortilla restaurant, Hand and Stone Massage and LaModa Boutique, said Jill Rose, vice president of retail service Orlandobased real estate advisory firm and Pineda Landings developer BishopBeale. Rose is also negotiating with Starbucks, TooJay’s Original Gourmet Deli and Culver’s, a Midwestern restaurant chain. “You’ll start seeing tenant buildouts happening soon,” Rose said. Burger 21 to open Oct. 12 at Viera Shops BY MIKE GAFFEY

Burger 21, a specialty hamburger restaurant franchise offering 21 unique burger creations, is scheduled to open Oct. 12 at Viera Shops, bringing about 50 jobs to the area. The Tampa-based fastcasual chain, which bills its fare as “beyond the better burger,” is at 7171 Lake Andrew Dr., Suite 102, just south of the Avenue Viera. It’s the first Burger 21 in Brevard County and the second Florida location for owner Dennis Saller, a former Suntree resident now living in Celebration and the brand’s first franchisee. “The growth has been so exponential in the Viera area, it’s a perfect location,” said Saller, a dentist for 29 years in the Lake Washington area before selling his practice to a dental corporation. “We’re excited to be here.” Saller’s youngest daughter, Mary Allison, first gave him the idea to open a restaurant when she was 10 years old, urging him to open a ChickFil-A at the site of an old Miami Subs at Wickham Road and Interstate 95. Years later, a Chick-Fil-A opened at the location and has been a big success, he said. After graduating from Florida State University and moving to Tampa, Mary Allison visited several new Burger 21s and urged her parents to check them out after the company announced it would start offering franchises. “I made a mistake when she was 10 years old,” Saller said. “I said she probably has some insight and I figured I’m probably going to go ahead and check this brand out.” The 3,000-square-foot Viera location will have an additional 1,000 square feet of covered patio space, Saller said. There’s indoor seating for 86 and outdoor seating for 72. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. In addition to its 21 chefinspired burger creations ranging from hand-crafted, freshly ground Angus beef to

chicken, turkey, vegetarian, shrimp and tuna burgers, Burger 21 features fresh salads, all-beef hot dogs, chicken tenders and an extensive shake bar including hand-crafted milkshakes, floats and sundaes. “Burger 21 is not your typical place where you come in and you get your one or two patties, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, a little bit of mustard,” he said. “It’s a very unique concept and there’s such a wide variety, because out of the 21 burgers, only 10 are beef. The rest are nonbeef, so it caters to a wide variety of guests.” Burger 21 has 15 locations open in Arizona, Florida, Math Help

Georgia, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Virginia, and more than 20 in development in seven states. Saller’s first Florida franchise opened in November 2012 at the Mall at Millennia in Orlando. He and his daughter Whitney will oversee both locations. “Dennis Saller’s Orlando location has already proven to be highly successful, and we’re confident that he’ll bring the same success to Melbourne,” Mark Johnston, Burger 21 founder and president, said in a press release. Golfing pastors pump up the proceeds to help homeless families BY LINDA WIGGINS

Call it the battle of the pastors, but clergy and lay members of a churches association that bands together to tackle large community projects is looking to trade some good-natured ribbing for a good cause. Promise in Brevard is a charity that is embraced by the association as a vehicle to turn the lives around of homeless families. Families live on site at area churches for a week once a quarter, spending their days looking for work while their children attend school or day care. Volunteers from those churches cook for the families and in general surround them with a family of faith until they rotate to their next church home or into permanent housing. The association donated $2,000 for direct support to the families through the charity’s fourth annual golf tournament Saturday, Nov. 7 at Indian River Colony Club. The four bronze sponsorships come with a total of 16 entry fees. Members of the Suntree/Viera Area

Association of Churches are now looking for fellow pastors and lay leaders from churches to join them on the golf course and donate toward the $100 green fees to add to their donation. “I’ve been proudly displaying the traveling trophy in my office,” said last year’s pastorprize winner Rev. David Lindemer of Pineda Presbyterian Church in Suntree, immediate past president of S/VAAC. He challenged current S/VAAC president Rev. Hoyt Byrum, congregational care pastor at Suntree United Methodist Church, at the Sept. 10 association meeting to beat him at recruiting and on the course. For more information on the Promise in Brevard golf tournament, which includes greens fees, cart, practice range, door prizes, goody bag, T-shirt, ball for helicopter ball drop, continental breakfast and awards luncheon, call 321-610-4400 or 321-757-8420, or go to events-familypromiseofbrevard.org. To join pastors and lay leaders on a foursome, call 321-259-1300 and register under the pastor of your choice. VV

Experts bring free support for those suffering loss

BY LINDA WIGGINS

Four experts on grief relief will come together to facilitate healing in others at a free community meeting twice a month beginning Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Suntree Grief Journey Support Group is open to all persons in Brevard County who have experienced some type of life-changing loss. This may mean the loss of a loved one, but might also include losses such as divorce, relationship separation, a terminal diagnosis, a chronic illness, family disruption, disabilities due to illness, injury and aging, or financial loss. “Grief is a normal and universal response to a significant loss,” said Rev. Dr. John F. Baggett, former state director of Mental Health in North Carolina and author of “Finding the Good in Grief, Rediscover Joy After a Life Changing Loss” (Kregel 2013).

VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins

Experts John and Diane Baggett, Jan Janicki and Pam Nelson will facilitate the free Suntree Grief Journey Support Group starting Oct. 13.

“The journey of grief can be a pathway to healing. But whether healing takes place or not depends a great deal on the choices we make along the way.” Other facilitators include

Baggett’s wife, Diane, who has a master’s degree in nursing and has served as a psychiatric nurse, a nursing director, hospital vice president, and is a certified grief counselor and

a certified life coach. Janet R. Janicki is a Stephen Minister, Stephen Ministry Leader, and certified life coach. She is the author of “When Fear and Faith Collide” (Brentwood Christian Press

2008), which details her journey through her first year of vision loss. The Baggetts and Janicki are members of the American Association of Christian Counselors. Pamela L. Nelson has a master’s degree in Social Work Counseling from the University of Central Florida. Keep the Loved Ones Dear To You Near To You!

‘The Goonies’ movie is childhood classic BY KATIE PARSONS

Halloween has certainly changed since today’s parents were young, but there are some themes of intrigue that transcend generations: mystery, suspense and bravery are just a few. Steven Spielberg’s classic movie “The Goonies” packages all of these universal themes into a two-hour span. It’s why at 30 years old, “The Goonies” is still one of the most popular films of all time, and a family favorite. Suntree will present the famous film for free at its Fall Family Fun and Movie in the Park event on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Jack Mahon Park at 7550 Spyglass Hill Road. The public is invited and families are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to best enjoy the movie, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. Starting at 5 p.m., there will be several other activities for families to enjoy, including a kids costume contest, trick-or-treating, bouncy inflatables, and food and drink vendors. Uno Pizzeria & Grill is the official sponsor and will have items for purchase. As the volunteer Parks and Recreations Committee chair, Heather Murdoch had a hand in choosing 1980s classic coming-of-age “The Goonies” for the big screen. “This is definitely a throwback. We thought it would be fun to introduce

this generation to a classic movie. It’s a great way to share between parents and grandparents and kids,” Murdoch said. The popular haunted hayride is also back, with two versions: A less-scary option before dark for the little ones, and a scary option after the sun sets. Murdoch has been volunteering to help with events like this one for four years and she is always impressed with the atmosphere created by attendees. “It is always such a fun, family environment. Regardless of whether you have kids or not, come out and enjoy yourself,” she said. Families should also mark their calendars for the next movie showing on Dec. 12. Another classic will be on the big screen: “A Christmas Story.”

“We just really want to give families the chance to share these classics with each other, and give it a nostalgic feel,” Murdoch said. For more information on these events, go to SuntreeFlorida.com. VV

Habits — And Make It Stick This Time,” writer Gretchen Rubin recognizes that clarity about what we really want is the main factor to push us to

successfully make a change. To a certain degree, I have to agree with her. After watching a video of a plastic straw being pulled out of a sea turtle nostril, I had the clarity I needed to want to make a change — a change that I can control and that I believe will make a difference: refuse to use plastic straws. I hadn’t realized it, but “Americans use a mindboggling 500 million singleuse straws a day, according to manufacturers,” reports Chris Clarke from KCET. So I took Ocean Conservancy’s The Last Straw Challenge and I am ready to do my share. For me, it is a change of habit and an opportunity to raise awareness of the issue to each one of the servers who tries to serve me drinks with a straw. I know that, like any type of change, this is going to be a process, but I also know that the process starts within us. “Research by Professor Wendy Wood and colleagues shows that we repeat about

40 percent of our behavior almost daily,” and if we start small, understand the trade-offs, and automate a wanted behavior, Christine Whelan declares in a Washington Post interview, we are more likely to stick to it. I am up for the challenge and I am sure others take on different small challenges that will make an impact, too. Matt Steele, owner of CrossFit Viera, is one of those. When he opened the gym at its new location on Schenck Avenue, he had no recycle bin for all the plastic bottles and cans discarded after each workout session. Aware of how many bottles and cans were being sent to the landfill, he brought in a nice blue bin and CrossFit members now have a place to recycle. It doesn’t matter how big the challenge is, everyone and every action can make an impact. I started refusing straws, Matt brought in a recycle bin, and Angela Haseltine Pozzi cleans up beaches and processes the debris into art supplies to construct giant sculptures of the sea life most affected by plastic pollution. Pozzi is the lead artist of

the Washed Ashore Project (washedashore.org) whose goal is “to educate and create awareness of ocean debris and plastic pollution and its effect on marine life species.” The Brevard Zoo will host the project’s traveling exhibit from Nov. 8 through May 8, 2016 and it sounds like a very unique opportunity that no one should miss. Unfortunately, what we often see is a big disconnect between what we do and the consequences of our actions. We need to close that gap. This year, in an attempt to start making connections, we will be working toward a waste reduction campaign that I am calling Waste Me Not. We will combine action and reflection, charity and art to involve as many children, adults, organizations and businesses as possible. Look for information about that on RecycleBrevard.org and participate. To me, all it took was a straw. What will it take you? VV

disappearing, some bats are roosting in abandoned mines. The only mammals capable of true flight are bats. Some fly 40 miles per hour and cover 50 miles nightly. Many migrate from Canada to Mexico. Bat wings are thinner than bird wings providing better maneuverability. The membranous wings have arms, long fingers and little thumbs. Tears are repaired by a regrowth of membrane. Most bats are insectivores. One bat may consume hundreds of insects in one hour. Others may ingest pollen, nectar, fish, blood and even other bats. Younglings nurse on milk. Sharp teeth facilitate insect and fruit penetration. Tube-lipped nectar bats display the longest tongues of mammals, relative to size. After deep-flower probing, such a tongue coils up inside the rib cage. Vampire bats are native to Latin America. The common species lick — not suck — blood from sleeping

mammals like cattle and occasionally humans. Only a tablespoon is drawn. Bat saliva contains Draculin, the anticoagulant named after Dracula, to keep the victim’s blood from clotting. Fortunately, less than one percent of bats carry rabies. The ultrasonic shrieks of nocturnal bats — typically not audible to humans — echo off objects. Unique ears and noses assist in echo interpretation to locate prey and navigate. Echolocation is natural radar. Blind as a bat? Bats dart at night, seemingly blind. However, they can see, night or day. Vision varies from poor to excellent. And bats do not entangle in hair. They dive toward insects surrounding people’s heads. Let’s go to bat for bats. They control insects. They pollinate. Guano — bat feces — is a great fertilizer that was also used for gunpowder during the Civil War. Furthermore, bats are vital for hibernation, sonar and blood-clotting research. Bats are beneficial creatures. VV
