QUICK TIPS ARRIVAL TIPS TO HELP MAKE YOUR STAY MORE PLEASURABLE KEYLESS ENTRY

Many of our vacation rental properties now have Keyless Entry. This allows you to bypass the normal check in procedure and go directly to your property at checkin time. Guests staying at keyless vacation rentals will receive an email prior to arrival with instructions. For questions or concerns regarding your keyless entry-equipped rental, please contact our office at (252) 354-2323. Check-out is expected promptly at 10:00am. Please make sure that you are prepared to depart the property, as your key code expires at this time. Simply enter 123456 and press * on the lock to tell us that you’ve checked out.

INTERNET SERVICES Your Wi-Fi Network Name and Password can be found in your Pre-Arrival Email you received a few days before your vacation. Additional Wi-Fi information may be found on the refrigerator magnet or sometimes on the modem itself. (Or in the Bluewater NC app!) Although many properties provide internet, some do not. If you brought your computer and need internet access while staying with us, you can access a guest network from our lobbies. If you are having trouble accessing the internet that is provided to you by your vacation home, please call our Maintenance Department at (252) 354-6128.

HEATING AND COOLING Please keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to enable the system to keep up with demand. You may experience high or low temperatures during or shortly after checking in due to excessive activity. These generally will moderate over an hour or two once closed.

REFRIGERATOR The refrigerator has been cleaned and sanitized for your stay. The settings should be set in the mid-range prior to your arrival. Loading the refrigerator at check-in will initially cause the unit to run and can take up to 24 hours to stabilize the temperature.

PEST CONTROL The Crystal Coast has an abundance of maritime wildlife. Unfortunately, this also includes a large population of ants, water bugs and fleas. All of our properties are required to have routine treatment and cans of pest control spray under the kitchen sink for your convenience. Please help control insects by keeping all foods sealed, dishes rinsed and by emptying trash cans.

HOUSEKEEPING & LINENS

LOCKED OUT?

If you have any housekeeping issues please call during business hours for assistance at (252) 354-6130. Please check your linen order immediately upon arrival for correct quantity and sizes. If your linens have not been delivered by 4 P.M. or if your order is incorrect, please call us at (252) 646-1723 or (252) 354-2323 after hours with the property name, address and your party’s preferred contact number so that we may reach you.

During business hours, you may come to the office and borrow a key. After-hours, please call our office and follow the prompts for after hours emergencies. We will be in touch shortly to arrange entry into your home. If an agent is required to deliver keys to the property, a $50 service fee will be applied.

REFERENCE MEDICAL SERVICES HURRICANES & TROPICAL STORMS Hurricane season extends from June to November. When a hurricane approaches our coastline, the Town officials will issue either a mandatory or a voluntary evacuation, based on current conditions. During a mandatory evacuation, vacation guests and permanent residents must leave the island and go further inland. After the mandatory evacuation is executed, the bridges are secured by the state police and no vehicles are allowed on the island until the evacuation is lifted. During a voluntary evacuation, you may decide whether to leave. For either type of evacuation, measures are taken to secure the exterior of your vacation home including storing and moving porch furniture, closing storm shutters, and securing patio furniture and decorations. The National Weather Service issues early warnings so there is ample time for everyone to prepare. Newspapers, radio and television stations keep the public notified about evacuations as well as re-entry information. Listen for details relating to Carteret County, also known as “Bogue Banks” or “The Crystal Coast.” Check our website [BluewaterNC.com] and our Facebook page at [facebook.com/BluewaterRealEstate] for additional information during a storm.

TRIP INTERRUPTION We hope that your vacation on the Crystal Coast is nothing short of wonderful! But if a family emergency interrupts your trip, we’re here to help. If you’ve purchased Travel Insurance coverage, you can get details about making a claim by calling (866) 889-2070. If you have not purchased coverage, please contact our Vacation Planners.

BOGUE SOUND If you are staying in a sound front home, you may have direct access to the sound from a private dock or a boat slip. There is a community boat access to the sound in Emerald Isle, as well as several marinas throughout the island that can offer boat ramps and trailer parking. Keep in mind that the sound is shallow, especially at low tide, when leaving your watercraft docked in the waters of Bogue Sound.

NORTH CAROLINA’S

PINE KNOLL SHORES

The wide beaches and sound side access make it easy to swim, go shelling, clamming or kayaking along this beautiful stretch of island. The North Carolina Aquarium is located in Pine Knoll Shores and offers a variety of marine species including fish, crabs, sea horses, lionfish and sharks. The sea turtle nursery features an albino turtle named Nimbus! Nature trails offer a walk above a tidal marsh where marine creatures live and shore birds wade looking for food. All in all, it’s a tranquil way to spend the afternoon.

SWANSBORO The home of Hammocks Beach State Park, the “Friendly City by the Sea” offers a historic downtown district overlooking the water. The quaint village atmosphere and historic downtown area offers shopping in an area alive with restaurants, boutiques, gift shops and waterside parks. Host to the Arts by the Sea Festival, the Mullet Festival and multiple fishing tournaments – Swansboro offers some of the best hospitality on the North Carolina coast.

EMERALD ISLE

The outdoorsy adventurous guests to Emerald Isle are in heaven with activities like surfing, kayaking, kiteboarding and paddleboarding. Families can enjoy miles of walking, jogging and bike paths and several nature trails that allow you to enjoy the natural pristine environment with a variety of birds, waterfowl and families of white tail deer. The Point in Emerald Isle is not to be missed when visiting the western shores of Bogue Banks; the sunsets are breathtaking!

SALTER PATH

Known for its history as an old fishing village, Salter Path is different because it is home to a large dune system, excellent beaches, breathtaking sound front views and even a small maritime forest. Family beach cottages are easy to spot as you cruise through Salter Path. Be sure to stop and look at Bogue Sound; as it sparkles a magnificent blue on a bright sunny day.

INDIAN BEACH

Indian Beach is conveniently located in the middle of Bogue Banks. Its central location on the island allows easy access to the restaurants and shopping of Morehead City and Emerald Isle. But above all, you’ll enjoy the quiet calming expanse of soft sands and lush maritime forest.

6

ATLANTIC BEACH

Atlantic Beach has a retro “beach-town” feel of days past and has been North Carolina’s “go to” beach since the 1930’s. Located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, Atlantic Beach features a laid back friendly feel with wide sandy beaches, a boardwalk and a commercial district with plenty of dining and shopping options. Nature trails, public parks and beach accesses will draw you in. Atlantic Beach is also home to Fort Macon State Park, a historic Civil War fort, which is the most visited state park in North Carolina.

MOREHEAD CITY

Downtown Morehead City has alluring waterfront appeal lined with charter boats, legendary seafood restaurants, charming shops all overlooking Sugarloaf Island. The Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament is held annually in June with crowds, Beaufort, NC gathering daily at the weigh station to see which boat will bring in the biggest blue! Also home of the North Carolina Seafood Festival, held every year the first weekend in October. Vendors line the waterfront with all types of seafood & arts and crafts, along with kid’s rides and activities! Families can also enjoy watching the Morehead City Marlins play baseball at Big Rock Stadium. With multiple shopping centers throughout Morehead City, there’s something for everyone!

BEAUFORT

Beaufort, the 3rd oldest town in North Carolina, is known for its Bahamian and West Indian style architecture and its close ties with a notorious pirate. It offers a beautiful sandy shore as well as stunning waterfront views and many specialty shops and delicious restaurants downtown. Spend a sunny afternoon watching the feral horses from the banks of Beaufort or board a ferry to see them in their unspoiled habitat. Hop atop the English Double-Decker bus for a tour around this historic fishing village to see Blackbeard’s home and the mysterious Old Burial Ground. It will not take you long to see exactly why this coastal community was voted Best Small Town in the USA in 2012.

SEA TURTLE SANCTUARY

LET’S

Every summer, the endangered loggerhead sea turtles make their way to our island to nest. Emerald Isle & Atlantic Beach host a Sea Turtle Protection Program with over 100 volunteers! They walk the entire Emerald Isle (12.5 mi) and Atlantic Beach (4.5 mi) shores early every morning searching for evidence of sea turtles coming ashore during the night to lay her eggs. Sea turtles can live to be over 50 years old; however, they have a very low survival rate. Only about one in 1,000 babies will live to have hatchlings of their own.

5 WAYS YOU CAN HELP THE SEA TURTLES

1

FILL WHERE YOU DIG

2

REMOVE BEACH ITEMS

3

Digging in the sand is great fun, but be sure to fill in all of the holes when you are done. Mother turtles can get stuck or injured in them. Tents, toys, chairs and other beach gear should not be left out overnight. They can be hazardous to mother turtles nesting and new hatchlings.

KEEP OUTSIDE LIGHTS OFF

Any lights on the ocean side of your home should be kept to a minimum. They are a distraction to mother turtles and can keep hatchlings from reaching the water. Their instinct is to head toward the light, which should be the moon over the ocean, so porch lights and flash lights can send them off in the wrong direction.

4

PICK UP TRASH

5

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE

Especially plastic bags, which the turtles think are jellyfish (one of their main food sources!) It can make them sick! If you should happen to find a mother turtle nesting or a turtle nest hatching, stay back at least 30 feet and turn off your flashlight and avoid camera flashes. Turn off your cell phone ringer and try to stay very quiet. You will get to witness something rare and wonderful!

Biologists and volunteers mark and observe nests. The nest sites are marked off by flagged tape and a large yellow post with the nest number. Because these are a threatened and endangered species, the Program is not permitted to advertise the exact locations of nests nor the dates of hatching. However, the stakes and flagging are clearly visible along the beach – just look back towards the dunes, but don’t go too close! Around the time of hatching, volunteers dig a trench about two feet wide to help guide the baby sea turtles to the ocean. Please do not disturb these trenching areas – these trenches will help guide the hatchlings toward the ocean if the volunteers are not there to help. No one knows the exact time the babies will come out of the nest, so once the trench has been dug, the volunteers will start sitting at the nest from dusk to midnight.

Once the babies are ready, the area is cool and quiet, the nest will start to “boil” – the sand will look like a boiling pot of water! The baby loggerheads will come up from under the sand in groups and venture down to our crystal waters to learn to swim with the current, be a good navigator, be well traveled, and most importantly – age gracefully. The volunteers do not touch the hatchlings, they just guide them to the ocean. These newborn sea turtles will go towards the brightest thing they see – at night they are guided to the ocean by the glistening light of the moon shining onto the surface of the crashing, foaming waves.

GRILLED OYSTERS

what's for

dinner

A coastal favorite here in Eastern North Carolina!

From The Sanitary Fish Market

A peck or two of fresh, raw oysters Cocktail sauce Lemons for juice Heat grill to medium-high heat, 350° to 400°. Grill washed oysters on foil for 8 to 10 minutes or until shells open ¼” to ½.” Remove from grill and pry open using an oyster knife. Squeeze lemon juice over the open oysters and serve with cocktail sauce. Just run the knife under the oyster to release! After you “shuck,” don’t chuck - Shells are recycled to build oyster “reefs” to help repopulate oysters and build new habitats !

1 lb. fine corn meal 1 c. buttermilk 1 egg 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon sugar A pinch of baking soda Stir all ingredients, adding water, to thick consistency. Drop in deep fryer at 375°. Yield: 6 servings

Bordered by the confluent waters of the White Oak River and the Intracoastal Waterway, this beautiful waterfront city offers visitors an unhurried journey through time. It’s a place where seagulls and pelicans lazily float through the Carolina blue sun-kissed skies and gently lapping waves caress sandy shores as they’ve always done. And it’s a playground that abounds in boating, fishing, kayaking, golf, amusements, arts, and little shops and eateries for your eyes and tummies to feast on. If you are a little more adventurous you might want to go over to Hammocks Beach State Park and take the small pontoon boat ferry over and experience a beach with lots of room. It’s just a couple of miles from Swansboro. The ferry runs either every half hour or hour depending on the day of the week and the time of the year. Hammocks Beach State park has a great kayak or canoe launch point and the waters look perfect for paddling.

Park along Main Street and walk the waterfront for an afternoon. Find delicious spots for breakfast and lunch and enjoy the salty breeze eating on a deck overlooking the water. Pick up new art, antiques or jewelry at the locally owned shops or just take in the sights. From the unique waterfront shops, boutiques and waterside cafes, to boating, water sports and fishing, Swansboro is a quaint waterfront town with very interesting architecture. Located between Atlantic Beach and Topsail Island, Swansboro offers a laid back coastal atmosphere of Eastern North Carolina for both residents as well as vacationers alike.

DEEP SEA

THE GRAVEYARD OF THE PACIFIC The Crystal Coast has been named one of the top dive destinations in the world. What makes the our area such a landmark in the diving community and described by many dive enthusiast as “wreck diver’s dream” are the thousands of ship wrecks in our waters. Some wrecks are located just a few miles from shore in just 30 foot depths. The North Carolina coast have been named “The Graveyard of the Pacific” for being the final resting place for over 2000 vessels.

DIVING THE INDRA The Indra, a Landing Craft Repair Ship, is a very popular inshore dive location sitting in only 60 feet of water and only 10 miles off Emerald Isle. This wreck dive is perfect for beginners and is explored by both locals and visiting divers year-round due to the fact that this is a warm water wreck dive spot thanks to the Gulf Stream. The 328 foot Indra was sunk for an artificial reef in the summer of 1992. Divers are able to see a variety of fish and other aquatic life, as well as an occasional Sand Tiger Shark. Enjoy video from this popular wreck dive site!

Your Vacation Guide to the Crystal Coast

EXPLORE THE UNKNOWN The ocean covers 71 percent of the Earth’s surface and contains 97 percent of the planet’s water, yet more than 95 percent of the underwater world is unexplored. Here on the crystal coast, you have the perfect opportunity to explore above the waves and a unique underwater world full of well-preserved sunken vessels teeming with sharks, turtles and a rainbow of fish.

LEARN TO DIVE 1. Contact your local dive center and sign up! 2. Study at home before course with the traditional scuba manual or with online courses 3. Schedule in-water skill development training with an instructor. This will take place in a pool or something similar. 4. Test your skills in open water. This step will include a minimum of four open water dives. 5. Get certified, get out there and DIVE! Anyone age 10 and up can get certified!

The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway runs over three thousand miles along the east coast of the United States from Massachusetts to Texas. It is a popular route for both commercial traffic and leisure cruising. Full of bays, lagoons, canals and rivers, it is easily utilized by deep-draft vessels and connects to many inland waterways.

CRUISE

T H E I N T R A C O A S TA L

The portion of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway that runs through North Carolina is no exception – you’ll find barrier islands, inlets and channels running along our coast just waiting to be explored. These marshy waterways are frequently traveled by boat and kayak by locals and visitors alike. Spend a day exploring some of North Carolina’s stretch of the Waterway and you’ll find not only amazing views and barrier islands and channels, but also fantastic wildlife! THE INTRACOASTAL

In the spring, you have a chance to catch migrating whales. Year round, but especially when schools of fish are running, (they like to travel the Intracoastal, too!) you’ll see pods of dolphins cruising the coastline. They have been known to swim alongside boats and say hello if you’re especially lucky! In the marshy areas, you’ll find lots of marine birds like pelicans, gulls and egrets and perhaps even an oyster bed. Along the barrier islands like Shackleford Banks and Carrot Island, you may also see wild banker ponies. These horses have roamed the beaches for hundreds of years in search of fresh water and food, and are a beautiful sight to behold. Whether you cruise the waterway by boat or kayak, you’re sure to find the views and experience unforgettable.

The Intracoastal Waterway is one of the largest coastal transportation routes, spanning over three thousand miles. Hundreds of canals, rivers, bays and lagoons support travel, commercial transportation and shipping ports along the eastern seaboard.

Snowbirds love to cruise the Intracoastal when traveling south for the winter to avoid the rougher waters of the open ocean. Commerical shipments along the waterway include petroleum, foods, building materials and manufactured goods.

North Carolina has 7 lighthouses along the coast visible from the Intracoastal Waterway; Currituck Bank, Bodie Island, Ocracoke, Cape Lookout, Bald Head Island, Oak Island and Cape Hatteras. The 3,000 mile waterway spans fourteen states from Massachusetts to Texas! The Atlantic Waterway runs just over 1,000 miles.

Riptides can occur on any beach where there are waves. If you get caught in a current and feel yourself being pulled out to sea, do not try to fight it. Instead, swim parallel to the beach for a few yards. Most riptides are not very wide. Once you are out of the strong current, swim back to shore.

FIVE YEARS AFTER WE WON A $25,000 WEDDING Fallin and Cory won the 2012 Vows on the Beach contest. Their love story not only illustrated the challenges of finding and holding on to love but also the obstacles a couple faces when one is fulfilling his patriotic duty. “Cory and I got married in Salter Path at Dream Maker estate on October 28, 2013. We won the ‘Crystal Coast Vows on the Beach Sweepstakes’ through Bluewater, which I had entered via Facebook when Cory was deployed to Afghanistan. My family is in Georgia and his in Maryland, so the Crystal Coast was the perfect mid point for us to share our vows. Our family and friends still talk about our wedding to this day and say how much fun they had and how beautiful it was. My grandfather officiated the wedding - making the occasion even more meaningful. In addition our personal vows, we shared special vows with Cory’s two sons, Tristan and Canyon, to celebrate the beginning of their family. We just built a home in Linden, Virginia and welcomed our baby girl, Corsen, to the world January 2nd. Now that our family is complete and we are settled in our new home, we are planning a trip back to Salter Path within the next year and hope to have family pictures taken to capture this new phase of life.” - Fallin and Cory Hebb

OUR I DO’S TO DAY TRIPS “We got married on the beach in Emerald Isle on April 25, 2009. We both love the area and I have been vacationing with my family on the Crystal Coast since I was a baby. Since our wedding, we traditionally vacation in Emerald Isle for a week every year and enjoy lots of day trips throughout the year. The two hour drive is worth a day in the sand! We now have two kids that love it as much as we do.” - Shannon Campbell Lee

PARTY OF 3+ KID APPROVED DATES If you can not find a night for just the two of you and the kids will be in tow, here are some date ideas that are totally kid approved! Take a ferry to Cape Lookout for the day Picnic in the grassy area at Hammocks Beach

FROM NEW ZEALAND TO BALI TO BEAUFORT Both attending college at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Liz Wellons and Mike Waine met in 2005 and began a friendship that would last beyond college. They have remained best friends ever since their first introduction, sharing a love of surfing, exploring and the outdoors. In December 2016, while attending their mutual friend Robbie Paul’s wedding in New Zealand, they took a leap of faith to follow their dreams. Liz and Mike both quit their jobs and took a year to travel the world together. They visited 20 countries in 10 months; taking in each country’s unique culture through backpacking, surfing, boating and dining on the most interesting eats throughout Europe, Central America and South East Asia.

Sunset dinner cruise in Swansboro or Beaufort Rent bikes from Bluewater and tour the island on the bike path or hit the streets of Beaufort Sip on a local brew while playing foosball, suffleboard or a giant game of Jenga and Connect 4 at Crystal Coast Brewing Company Order a pizza and take it to the AB Splash Pad for some water fun and a round of putt-putt

While vacationing with their parents in a historic home in downtown Beaufort, Mike got down on one knee and proposed to his world traveling partner. Having visited some of the most amazing places in the world, deciding on the location for the backdrop of their vows was easy. The tiny, quaint and charming town of Beaufort, NC was the perfect location to say “I do”. This May, their wedding will be held along the water at the Watercraft Museum where their friend Robbie Paul will officiate and officially make these two lifelong partners.

MERMAID TEARS ONE MANS TRASH IS ANOTHER MANS TREASURE Sea Glass, also known as “Mermaid Tears”, is not as uncommon as you may think. Years ago, locals trash which mainly consisted of glass and clay jars would be dumped off-shore in the ocean. After years of this glass churning on the ocean floor, breaking into small pieces allowing the waves and sand to smooth its jagged edges - the tide began to bring it ashore. Today you will find this trash as well polished, smooth sea glass! Where to find Sea Glass: • Along the beach at low tide • The sandy shores of Beaufort and Harker’s Island • Cape Lookout and Shackelford Banks

Place Cards - Spice up dinner

Tiny Wall Art for the kids!

Jewlery - Sea Glass Bangle

We are swooning over these pastel pieces, customized with your dinner guest names making unique place cards.

Use the pieces you find (or buy) with shells, driftwood and any other treasures you find to make little nautical scenes.

When you find a piece of sea glass you want to show it off - a statement piece of jewelry is a great way to do that!

Supplies:

Supplies:

22 Gauge Wire - 18” of wire Needle Nose Pliers Bangle, Bracelet or Cuff of your choice

Fine Point Permanent Marker any color Printer & Paper For those of you that are not master calligraphers - type up your guest names in your favorite font and print them out! Lay the name behind the sea glass and just trace with your marker! Most glass is translucent enough to see right through it. These can be great gifts to take home to remember those home cooked meals on vacation! If you need to print - call our front desk at either office, we will be happy to help you!

Fine Point Permanent Market E6000 Glue Card stock or Linen Paper Shadowbox or deep Rustic Wooden Frame Plan first what your scene will be. Let your imagination run free. Cut your paper down to fit inside your frame. Begin adding your treasures. Dab a tiny bit of glue to the back of your sea glass and attach it to your paper. We found it easier to draw each item as we went. Complete fish with fins and bubbles, jelly fish with tentacles, crabs with pincers and anchors with chains. Once your scene is completely dry, place it inside the frame and show it off!

Supplies:

Start at one point of the bracelet wrapping 5-7 times then continue to the back side of the glass. From there slowly start to wrap the wire around the glass, tight enough that the glass will not fall out. Allow the wire to guide you naturally around the sea glass. If you try to make it perfect - it will look forced. With your remaining 5-6 inches of wire finish by wrapping the other side of the bracelet the same number of times to fix the glass to the bangle.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY FUN IN THE SUN 11am to 3pm is when the suns rays are strongest. Use sunblock with a higher protection factor on more exposed areas - nose, ears, chest, top of feet & shoulders.

SOOTHE A SUNBURN

Allow 30 minutes for sunscreen to soak into your skin. Reapply every hour or more often when in the water or sweating.

Keep aloe gel in the fridge for cool relief

80% of skin damage occurs in the first 20 years of life - it’s up to the parents to get a start on a lifetime of protective skin care.

2

Brew green or black tea and apply cool compresses soaked in the tea to your skin immediately after coming inside

Sunscreen expires every 2 to 3 years - make sure to check your expiration dates before heading out to the beach!

3

Apply diluted apple cider vinegar to your burned area for an instant relief

Keep a great moisturizer on hand for after-sun - keeping your skin hydrated is key to healing quickly from any burns.

4

Soak in a bath of warm water with a few drops of peppermint essential oil

5

Take it easy on your skin, no scrubbing and use a soft towel to pat dry. Skip shaving for a few days.

If you do get burnt, make sure to drink extra wate. Should you experience any nausea, dizziness, swelling or if your burned area takes on a purple hue, seek medical care from a local urgent care or hospital.

Voted the Best National Park by USA TODAY, the Cape Lookout National Seashore gives you a new way to explore the Crystal Coast. If you are the more adventurous type try hitting the camping scene at Cape Lookout. Whether it be the Summer or the Fall, you can never go wrong with catching a boat ride or driving onto the island from the Eastern most side. If you are driving, the speed limit is 25 MPH or as posted. Please take note it is recommended for you to lower your tire pressure to about 20-25 pounds when driving on the barrier island.

The island is pretty barren after the last ferry call. But, can you imagine the privacy and the sound of the ocean to fall asleep by! There are bathroom facilities stationed sporadically across the area, but you will have to collect and toss your trash after you depart. Be aware, the mosquitoes and horse flies are more active in the summertime, so you will have to use some preventative methods. Cape Lookout is one of the only beaches in the area that allows an open fire. Camp fires can only be set up below the high tide line on the flat impacted sand. You need to bring your own firewood, as there is not much that you can forage when you arrive. You may use the sparse driftwood. Please be sure to douse your fire with water, not sand when done.

EXTRA! EXTRA! You can also enjoy sea shell hunting, bird watching, search for the Shackleford Ponies, snorkel on the sound side of the island and the extreme outdoor enthusiast can kayak or paddle board (not recommended for novices). Over 500,000 people visit Cape Lookout National Seashore annually. The biggest attraction is climbing the Diamond Lady Lighthouse. Make sure you make the climb during your visit.

CLIMB TIMES The lighthouse is open to the public for climbing from mid-May to mid-September. Wednesday to Sunday from 9:45am-4:15pm

A N O L D FA S H I O N E D ROMANCE WITH

Voted "The Coolest Small Town in America" by Budget Travel, the historic town ”Bo-furt” was established in 1722 as a seaport with the right to collect customs. During the American Revolution it was the third largest port in the state. Beaufort features more than 100 historic homes, a two-acre Historical Site that interprets the town’s colonial maritime heritage in nine houses and buildings dating from 1732 to 1859. The site offers classes, workshops and events throughout the year, as well as guided tours of the Historic Site that depart the Safrit Historical Center (at the south end of the historic site). Another popular event is the Beaufort Ghost Walk, which won the Crystal Coast’s “#1 Attraction” and “Best Tour Guide”. The tour is an after dark walk, accompanied by chilling stories of murderous pirates, unexplained happenings, ghost ships and haunted houses. The Ghost Walk takes about 45 minutes, and one of the stops includes The Hammock House, one of Beaufort’s many haunted houses and once the home of Blackbeard the Pirate. Be sure to pay a visit to the North Carolina's Maritime Museum to learn about our Maritime history, or if are an adventurous water enthusiast, you can go kayaking, parasailing or take a paddle board lesson. With several guided tours and activities available you will never be short of amusement and rich history on the Beaufort waterfront.
