HURRICANES & TROPICAL STORMS
Hurricane season extends from June to November When a hurricane approaches our coastline, local officials can issue either a mandatory or a voluntary evacuation based on current conditions. Measures will be taken prior to your evacuation by Bluewater staff, vacation homeowners, and independent contractors to secure the exterior of your vacation home including storing and moving porch and pool furniture, closing storm shutters, and tying down grills along with other necessary preparation to secure the home. We ask that you do not "un-prep" anything that has been prepared for a storm. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time. During a mandatory evacuation, vacationing guests and permanent residents must leave the island to go further inland. After the mandatory evacuation is executed, the bridges are secured by North Carolina State Police and no vehicles are allowed on the island until the evacuation is lifted. During a voluntary evacuation, you may decide whether to leave or not. The National Weather Service issues early warnings so there is usually ample time for everyone to prepare. Social media, radio, and television stations keep the public notified about evacuations and provide information for re-entry. Listen for details relating to Carteret County, also known as “Bogue Banks” or “The Crystal Coast.” LOOK FOR UPDATES. You can also follow along with updates from each town on their website. Visit the Town of Emerald Isle at [EmeraldIsle-NC.org] and the Town of Atlantic Beach at [AtlanticBeach-NC.com]. We will be sharing this information on our website at [BluewaterNC.com] and our social media accounts.

Many of our vacation rental properties have Keyless Entry. This allows you to bypass the normal check-in procedure (unless otherwise stated in your specified check-in instructions) and go directly to your property at check-in time. Guests staying at keyless vacation rentals will receive an email prior to arrival with instructions. For questions or concerns regarding your keyless entry equipped vacation rental, please call us at (252) 354-2323. Check-out is expected promptly at 10:00 AM. Please make sure that you are prepared to depart the property as your key code expires at this time. Simply enter 7 1 7 1 and press the star or checkmark on the lock to tell us that you've checked out.
Your WiFi network name and password can be found in the pre-arrival emails you received a few days before your stay and in the Guest Portal! Additional WiFi information may be found on the refrigerator magnet or sometimes on the modem itself. Although many properties provide internet, some do not. If you brought an internet-connected device and need to connect during your stay, you can access a guest network from our lobbies. If you are having trouble accessing the internet that is provided to you by your vacation home, please call our maintenance team at (252) 354-6128.
Housekeeping
Roll-down service is offered at the majority of our vacation rental properties. It is scheduled for the afternoon before pick-up day and rolled up on the same day as pick-up. Rolldown service is not available at our Beaufort properties. Refer to the guide below for trash and recycling pick-up days.

Heating & Cooling Please keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to enable the heating and cooling systems to keep up with demand. You may experience high or low temperatures during or shortly after checking in due to excessive activity. These will typically moderate over an hour or so once all doors and windows are closed. 4

Locked Out? If you are locked out of your vacation rental property during business hours, you may come to the office and borrow a key. If you are locked out after hours, please call our office and follow the prompts to reach our after-hours emergency service. We will be in touch shortly to arrange entry into your home. If an agent is required to deliver keys to the property, a $50 service fee will apply.
Refrigerators The refrigerator settings should be set in the mid-range prior to your arrival. Loading the refrigerator at check-in will initially cause the unit to run and can take up to 24 hours to stabilize the temperature.
Swimming Pools If there is a private pool at your vacation rental property, it will be cleaned and serviced twice weekly during your stay (*May vary based on demand). Some pools can be heated for an additional fee upon request in the cooler months. If you have access to a community pool, most are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Grills PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLEAN ANY GRILLS BEFORE CHECK-OUT FOR THE NEXT GUEST'S STAY. Many properties and condominium complexes provide grilling areas on the premises. Any grilling at your vacation rental property must be done as far from the structure as possible. Local ordinances prohibit the use of grills on any porches, decks, or walkways. Our strong, prevailing winds can be dangerous around open flames.
Pest Control The Crystal Coast has an abundance of maritime wildlife. Unfortunately, this also includes a large population of ants, water bugs, and fleas. All of our vacation rental properties are required to have routine professional treatment. Please help control insects by keeping all foods sealed, dishes rinsed, and trash cans emptied regularly.
Lost & Found Bluewater is not responsible for personal items left behind; however, we will make every effort to locate anything you’ve forgotten. Any found items are held for 30 days and then donated if not claimed. Report lost items to us by calling (252) 354-6130 or by emailing LostAndFound@ BluewaterNC.com.
Check-out Duties
At check-out, if you are staying at a keyed property, please return the keys and key packet to the office location in which you checked in. If you stayed in a condo complex or community, please make sure to return all gate cards, keys, pool tags, and parking passes with your key packet. Please Note: You will be charged additional fees if any of the above items are not returned to us upon your departure. Rip Current Safety 1. Don't panic! Remaining calm is your best chance escape the current without harm. 2. Relax and swim parallel to the shoreline. Rip currents don’t take you under, they take you further out to sea. Most are only about 50 meters (approx. 160 feet) wide. If you swim parallel to the shoreline, you will eventually swim out of the rip current and can then swim to shore. 3. Don’t exhaust yourself! If you feel yourself getting tired, float on your back or tread water, then wave and yell for help.
Warning Flag System RED FLAGS Indicate high hazards and that the public is advised to stay out of the ocean.
DOUBLE RED FLAGS
IF IN DOUBT, DON'T GO OUT! Check the flags for current conditions and understand the meaning of the colors before you hit the beach. Use common sense and take personal responsibility. Check beach conditions before you go out and if the water looks rough, don’t go in. Obey the warning flags even if you are an Olympic-class swimmer! When lifeguards and the local rescue have to stop to address the dangers you are putting yourself in, you are taking their attention away from someone that may need help. Never allow any child to go in the water unattended! If you are more than a foot away, you are too far. Ocean currents can be extremely strong and can sweep adults off their feet in knee deep water. Children should always be in a Coast Guard-approved flotation device when in the ocean or playing in the surf. Don’t assume calm water is the safest place to swim. The area where you don’t see waves breaking is usually where a rip current is located. If you are unsure about the conditions, ask someone! Don't assume that your swimming skill level is enough to get through a rip current.
Indicate the ocean is closed for swimming and you can be fined or arrested for entering the water. When used, Emerald Isle places double red flags approximately every 1/4 mile or less along the beach strand, at the town’s two regional access facilities, on all-terrain beach vehicles providing town services on the beach strand, and at the two Fire Stations.
YELLOW FLAGS Indicate moderate hazards and that the public should use caution in the ocean. Even the calmest of days on the beach can pose an inherent risk when entering the ocean and the public is always advised to use caution.
SPLIT RED & YELLOW FLAGS Indicate the presence of a lifeguard.
PURPLE FLAGS Indicate an abundance of potentially hazardous marine life in the vicinity, including Portuguese man-o-war, jellyfish, and other creatures. The town will fly these flags as needed in specific locations.
Never swim alone! Always swim with a friend and a flotation device.

PINE KNOLL SHORES
The "Friendly City by the Sea" is best known for its historic downtown district overlooking the water. The quaint village atmosphere and historic downtown area offer a unique shopping experience filled with one-of-a-kind restaurants and boutiques. Swansboro hosts the Arts by the Sea Festival, SwanFest, Mullet Festival, and annual fishing tournaments. Swansboro offers some of the greatest hospitality to its visitors on the Crystal Coast.
Just west of Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores has wide beaches and soundside access perfect for swimming, shelling, clamming, or kayaking along this beautiful stretch of the island. Nature trails lead you above the tidal marsh where marine creatures live and shorebirds wade. The North Carolina Aquarium hosts a wide array of fish, crabs, seahorses, river otters, and sharks - you’ll even get to meet Nimbus, the albino loggerhead sea turtle.
EMERALD ISLE Named one of the “Best Family Beaches” in the country, Emerald Isle is a haven for outdoorsy locals and a bounty of fun-filled activities for all. ATLANTIC BEACH At the eastern end of Bogue Banks lies Atlantic Beach, a laid-back beach town with vast sandy shores, a boardwalk, and a commercial district with plenty of shopping and dining. Nature trails, public parks, a splash pad, a skate park, and several beach access points provide fun for the entire family. Atlantic Beach is also home to historic Fort Macon State Park, a Civil War Fort, which remains the most visited state park in all of North Carolina.

Historically a fishing village, Salter Path lies on the Bogue Banks as an enclave within Indian Beach. Family beach cottages are easy to spot as you cruise through Salter Path. This coastal refuge stands apart from the rest because it is home to a large dune system, excellent beaches, eye-catching soundfront views, and even a small maritime forest. This idyllic, quiet beach community offers easy access to the sparkling blue-green ocean and calm waters of the sound and is perfect for recreation and relaxation for the whole family.
Downtown Morehead City has alluring waterfront appeal lined with charter boats, legendary seafood restaurants, and charming shops all overlooking Sugarloaf Island. The Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament is held annually in June with crowds gathering daily at the weigh station! Morehead City is also home of the NC Seafood Festival which is held every year on the first weekend in October!
INDIAN BEACH Nestled in the center of Bogue Banks, Indian Beach is the perfect place to visit with beautiful sights and sounds. Shopping, dining, and attractions for the entire family are easily found just a few minutes in any direction. With public beach accesses to the soft sand of the Crystal Coast as well as easy access to the lush, green maritime forest lining the Bogue Sound, you are sure to enjoy this charming locale.
BEAUFORT Beaufort was once voted “The South’s Best Small Town” by Southern Living magazine. Its Bahamian and West-Indian style architecture, stunning water views, specialty shops, decadent restaurants, and close ties with a notorious pirate (Captain Blackbeard - aaargh!), make this town explosive with charm. Watch the Shackleford ponies from the banks or board a ferry to explore the waters. Want to travel back in time? Hop atop the English Double-Decker bus and tour the historic fishing village to see Blackbeard’s home and the mysterious Old Burial Ground.

Crystal Coast Classic Recipes LOW COUNTRY SHRIMP BOIL Ingredients - 3 quarts of water - ½ cup of Old Bay seasoning - ½ cup of celery, thinly sliced - 1 pound of red potatoes - 1 pound of hot smoked sausage links, sliced - 6 ears of corn, quartered - 2 pounds of large fresh shrimp, unpeeled
ATLANTIC BEACH PIE For the Crust:
- 1½ sleeves of saltine crackers - ⅓ to ½ cup of softened, unsalted butter - 3 tablespoons of sugar
Directions Bring water and Old Bay seasoning to a boil in a large stockpot. Add potatoes and cook for 15 minutes. Add sausage and cook for 5 minutes. Add corn and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in the shrimp and cook until they are pink (about 5 minutes).
For the Filling:
- 1 can (14 ounces) of sweetened, condensed milk - 4 egg yolks - ½ cup of lemon or lime juice (try a mix!) For the Garnish: -Fresh whipped cream -Coarse sea salt Directions: Preheat the oven to 350˚. Crush the crackers finely, but not to dust. You can use a food processor or your hands. Add the sugar, then knead in the butter until the crumbs hold together like dough. Press the dough into an 8-inch pie pan. Chill for 15 minutes. Once chilled, bake for 18 minutes or until the crust starts to turn golden. Set aside to cool. While the crust is cooling, eat the egg yolks into the milk, then add the citrus juice and stir until totally combined. Pour the filling into the shell and bake for 16 minutes until set. The pie should be chilled before slicing. Serve with fresh whipped cream and a sprinkling of sea salt. Enjoy!
JUMBO LUMP CRAB CAKES Ingredients - 1 pound of jumbo lump crab meat - 2 cups of mayonnaise - 1 teaspoon of paprika - 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard - 1 tablespoon of Old Bay seasoning - ¼ cup of diced scallions - 2 tablespoons of roasted red peppers (diced) - 3 tablespoons of finely diced onions (sautéed) - 2 tablespoons of celery salt - 1 cup of bread crumbs Directions Mix mayonnaise, paprika, Dijon mustard, Old Bay seasoning, scallions, red peppers, onions, and celery salt in a mixing bowl. Fold in crab meat such that the jumbo lump texture is preserved. Add bread crumbs to help the mixture more solidify. Form 4-ounce patties (about 1 ½ inches thick each). Baby Powder is absolute magic when it comes to bringing babies and toddlers to the beach! They can get totally covered in sand and a little touch of baby powder will remove it all, easy peasy lemon squeezy! A Canopy sounds like a lot, but there are some compact options out there like the Pop'N'Go that don't add much to your beach packing list other than tried and true convenience. These are amazing for coralling your little ones and provide a shady and secure place for them to catch up on sleep without having to leave the beach! A Kiddie Pool seems like an odd thing to bring along, but is a real hoot to fill with ocean water and shells so that your little ones can "play in the ocean" without actually doing so! This is especially nice when you just want to sit in your chair and soak up the sun!

Supplies: - Clear glue - Contact lens solution (with boric acid & sodium borate) - Baking soda - Play sand Directions: Start by mixing together 6 oz. of clear glue, half a tablespoon of baking soda, and one tablespoon of contact lens solution. Add in a quarter to a half cup of play sand and stir until all of your ingredients are combined. Knead until the dough is no longer sticky. Add glitter if you'd like, but beware of glitterry little hands since it does tend to rub off a little bit! Add seashells and store in an airtight container and this indoor beach fun will last a few days!

Surf Fishing The Crystal Coast is a well-known paradise for anglers, thanks to miles of water in every direction, and a famed distinction as the locale for some of the biggest fishing tournaments along the East Coast. From heading miles offshore to target the summertime billfish to checking out the two local oceanfront piers, there are ample ways for fishermen to get their lines wet. According to anglers, fall is the best time of year to surf fish on the Crystal Coast. This is when most anglers can expect to find delicious drum that are migrating and other huge, tasty catches that will leave your mouth watering.

Here are some things you'll need to know for a successful fishing trip on the Crystal Coast. After all, preparation is key!

The first thing that you will need to fish in North Carolina waters is a Coastal Recreational Fishing License. This license applies to all anglers over the age of 16 who want to fish along the beaches. This fishing license is very inexpensive and easy to obtain. A 10-Day license costs $5 for state residents and $10 for out-of-state anglers. There is also the option of an annual license which costs $15 for state residents and $30 for out-of-state residents. If you are visiting, you can pick up your fishing license by visiting [NCWildlife.org] or stopping by any local bait and tackle shop.

After getting your fishing license, you will want to have some bait on hand! In the summertime, you can catch your own bait by digging in the wet sand close to the ocean wash for “sand diggers” or “sand fleas," which are great bait for mullet and bluefish. Use shrimp and crab meat to catch Red Drum. If you're using shrimp or live bait try the "popping cork" method using a small weight and letting the shrimp dangle underneath the water.

six easy ways to help the KEEP YOUR DISTANCE: If you happen to find a mother turtle nesting or a nest, stay back at least 30 feet. Please do not disturb nesting turtles, nests, or the baby hatchlings. LIMIT WASTE: Carry reusable water bottles and avoid straws to reduce plastics on the beach. If you bring plastics to the beach, please be kind to our planet and recycle. CLEAN UP: Please pick up your trash, especially plastic bags, which the turtles think are jellyfish (one of their main food sources). Before you leave the beach, keep an eye out for anything that might have been left behind by you or your neighbor. PACK IT UP: Tents, toys, chairs, and other beach gear should not be left out overnight. They can be hazardous to mother turtles and their babies. LEVEL THE SAND: Be sure to fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before you leave the beach. Turtles can get stuck or injured in them while laying their eggs or heading out to sea. LIGHTS OUT: Any exterior lights on the oceanside should be kept to a minimum. They distract turtles and keep hatchlings from reaching the sea. Their instinct is to head towards light, where the moon guides them to the sea.

The Diamond Lady & her
Since the 16th century, wild horses have roamed Shackleford Banks, the southern-most barrier island in Cape Lookout National Seashore, galloping across the sandy beach and nibbling on the wild grasses. This herd of more than 110 wild horses, or “Banker Ponies,” are believed to be descendants of Spanish mustangs that were forced ashore during shipwrecks in the 1500s. The characteristics of the breed, which closely resemble ancient Spanish mustangs support this theory, as does genetic testing which groups them with horses that originated in Spain and Portugal. The wild Banker Ponies roam the island freely, nibbling on local coastal grasses, which include smooth cordgrass in the marsh, salt meadow cordgrass, and sea oats in the dunes. When they’re in need of a drink, they simply dig for underground fresh water springs that can be found under the barrier islands. When storms approach, the Banker Ponies retreat to the maritime forest. They have lived this way for hundreds of years, surviving peacefully with limited human interaction.

The horses are part of the cultural history of the area and provide enjoyment for thousands of visitors each year. Take the ferry over to Shackleford Banks and spend the day amongst the waves finding conch shells and catching a glimpse of these beautiful, wild ponies. What to Bring Along: For this adventure, you’ll want to wear walking shoes that you don't mind getting wet. This will allow you to take a few steps off the ferry or wade in from your boat. Shoes will also help protect your feet from the low-growing cacti and sand spurs found in some areas of the island. Binoculars are recommended to allow you to watch from a safe distance, without spooking the ponies. If you plan to take pictures, a telephoto lens is a must-have so you can snap photos safely away from the horses. Not a photography buff? Zoom in on your cell phone from afar. Be sure to bring along insect repellant, especially during the summer. The horses roam the entire island, so be prepared to venture to find them. When you
find horses, keep a safe distance away - at least 50 feet from the herd. When in doubt, stay back. Settle yourself at a comfortable vantage point and watch. Your patience will be rewarded by a glimpse into the life of a wild horse. Travel out to Cape Lookout to find the Diamond Lady, one of seven statuesque beacons that sprinkle North Carolina’s coast. Found a mere 3 miles off the shore of Beaufort, Cape Lookout is the perfect place for visitors to take a short trip or spend an entire day on the barrier islands. Upon arriving, you’re greeted by the tall “Diamond Lady”, stretching 188 steps into the sky. We can’t imagine visiting the shore without viewing it from a bird’s eye view by climbing to the top of the lighthouse. The island touches both the inlet and the wide-open Atlantic Ocean and is perfect for shelling, swimming, and camping. Stroll the beach for treasures or float in the inlet and soak up the sun. Either way, an afternoon spent at the foot of this stunning beacon is bound to be truly unforgettable.
