Hurricanes & Tropical Storms Hurricane season extends from June to November
When a hurricane approaches our coastline, the Town Officials will issue either a mandatory or voluntary evacuation based on current conditions. For either type of evacuation, measures will be taken prior to your evacuation by Bluewater staff, vacation homeowners, and independent contractors to secure the exterior of your vacation home including storing and moving porch and pool furniture, closing storm shutters, and tying down grills along with other necessary items to secure the home. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time. We ask that you do not un-prep anything that has been prepared for a storm. During a mandatory evacuation, vacation guests and permanent residents must leave the island and go further inland. After the mandatory evacuation is executed, the bridges are secured by State Police and no vehicles are allowed on the island until the evacuation is lifted. During a voluntary evacuation, you may decide whether to leave or not. The National Weather Service issues early warnings so there is usually ample time for everyone to prepare. Social media, radio, and television stations keep the public notified about evacuations as well as re-entry information. Listen for details relating to Carteret County, also known as “Bogue Banks” or “The Crystal Coast.” LOOK FOR UPDATES from the towns on their websites. Visit the Town of Emerald Isle at [emeraldisle-nc.org] and the Town of Atlantic Beach at [atlanticbeach-nc.com]. We will be sharing this information on our website at [BluewaterNC.com] and our Facebook page at [facebook.com/BluewaterRealEstate]
Travel Insurance We hope that your vacation on the Crystal Coast is nothing short of wonderful, but if a family emergency interrupts your trip, they are here to help! If you’ve purchased Travel Insurance coverage, you can get details about making a claim by calling (866) 889-2070 or by going online to [trippreserver.com]. Locked Out? During business hours, you may come to the office and borrow a key. After-hours, please call our office and follow the prompts for after-hours emergencies. We will be in touch shortly to arrange entry into your home. If an agent is required to deliver keys to the property, a $50 service fee will be applied.
Refrigerator The settings should be set in the mid-range prior to your arrival. Loading the refrigerator at check-in will initially cause the unit to run and can take up to 24 hours to stabilize the temperature.
Swimming Pools If you have a private pool, it will be cleaned and serviced twice weekly during your stay. Some pools can be heated for an additional fee upon request in the cooler months. If you have access to a community pool, most are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Periodically, community pools may be closed for necessary maintenance without notice or reimbursement. Questions? Call (252) 354-6128.
Grills MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLEAN YOUR GRILL BEFORE CHECK-OUT FOR THE NEXT GUEST STAYING AT YOUR HOME. Many homes and condominium complexes provide grilling areas on the grounds. Any grilling at homes must be done as far from the home as possible. Town ordinances prohibit the use of grills on any porches, decks, or walkways. Our strong, prevailing winds can be dangerous with open flames.
Pest Control The Crystal Coast has an abundance of maritime wildlife. Unfortunately, this also includes a large population of ants, water bugs, and fleas. All of our properties are required to have routine professional treatment. Please help control insects by keeping all foods sealed, dishes rinsed, and by emptying trash cans.
Lost & Found Bluewater is not responsible for personal items left behind; however, we will make every effort to locate anything you’ve forgotten. Items are held for 30 days and then donated. Report lost items to us by calling (252) 354-6130 or by emailing LostAndFound@BluewaterNC.com.
Check-Out Duties At check-out, return the keys and key packet to the office location you checked in to. In the case of condos, make sure to return all gate cards, keys, pool tags, and parking passes with your packet. Please note that you will be charged if any of the above items are not returned to us upon your departure. Occupancy of the property including driveways, parking areas, decks, pools, or outside showers is not permitted after 10:00AM check-out. Text housekeeping with questions at (252) 429-4564

water safety Rip Current Safety 1. DO NOT PANIC! Remaining calm is your best chance for survival. 2. Relax and swim PARALLEL to the shoreline. Rip currents don’t take you under, they take you out. Most are only about 50 meters wide. If you swim parallel to the shoreline, you will eventually swim out of the rip current and can then swim to shore. 3. DON’T EXHAUST YOURSELF! If you feel yourself getting tired, float on your back or tread water, then wave and yell for help.
Never Swim Alone I F I N D O U B T, D O N ' T G O O U T ! CHECK THE FLAGS FOR CURRENT CONDITIONS and understand the meaning of the colors before you hit the beach. USE COMMON SENSE AND TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Check beach conditions before you go out and if the water looks rough, don’t go in. OBEY THE WARNING FLAGS even if you are an Olympic-class swimmer! When lifeguards and the town have to stop to address the dangers you are putting yourself in, you are taking their attention away from someone that may need help. NEVER ALLOW ANY CHILD TO GO IN THE WATER UNATTENDED! If you are more than a foot away, you are too far from a child. Ocean currents can be extremely strong and can sweep adults off their feet in knee deep water. Children should always be in a Coast Guard Approved flotation device when in the ocean or playing in the surf. DON’T ASSUME THAT CALM WATER IS THE SAFEST PLACE TO SWIM. The area where you don’t see waves breaking is usually where a rip current is located. If you are unsure about the conditions, ask someone! Do not assume that your swimming skill level is enough to get through a rip current. NEVER SWIM ALONE! Always swim with a friend and a flotation device. (25 2) 35 4 - 2 3 2 3 | B L U E WAT E R N C . Towns SWANSBORO
The "Friendly City by the Sea" is most known for its historic downtown district overlooking the water. The quaint village atmosphere and historic downtown area offers shopping in an area alive with restaurants and boutiques. Swansboro hosts the Arts by the Sea Festival, SwanFest, Mullet Festival and annual fishing tournaments. EMERALD ISLE
Named one of the “Best Family Beaches” in the US, outdoorsy locals are in heaven with activities this town has to offer. Miles of walking, jogging and bike paths and nature trails allow you to enjoy this pristine natural environment. You can spot white tailed deer throughout the island. The Point is a must to watch the absolutely breathtaking sunsets on our coast! S A LT E R PAT H & I N D I A N B E AC H
Known for its history as an old fishing village, Salter Path and Indian Beach are centrally located on the island allowing for easy access to the restaurants and shopping neighboring towns. These two quiet towns boast exceptional beaches and soundside accesses. PINE KNOLL SHORES
Home of the 265-acre Theodore Roosevelt State Natural Area, Pine Knoll Shores is a unique gem of Bogue Banks. The North Carolina Aquarium is located here and offers a variety of marine species including sea horses, lionfish, sharks and a sea turtle nursery! Nature trails and lush overhanging trees offer a one-ofa-kind walk above tidal marshes where marine creatures live and the shore birds wade.
ATL A NTIC BE ACH
Has a retro “beach-town” feel of days past and has been North Carolina’s “go-to” beach since the 1930s. Located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, the town is full of restaurants, shopping spots, public parks, a boardwalk, splash pad, skate park and beach accesses that will draw you into their crystal shores. It’s also home to the most visited State Park, the historic Civil War Fort, Fort Macon. MOREHEAD CITY
Downtown Morehead City has alluring waterfront appeal lined with charter boats, legendary seafood restaurants and charming shops all overlooking Sugarloaf Island. The Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament is held annually in June with crowds gathering daily at the weigh station! Morehead City is also home of the NC Seafood Festival which is held every year on the first weekend in October! BEAUFORT
The 3rd oldest town in North Carolina was voted by Southern Living as “The South’s Best Small Town” in 2019! Its Bahamian and West-Indian style architecture, stunning water views, specialty shops, decadent restaurants and close ties with a notorious pirate make this town explode with charm. Watch the feral horses from the banks or board a ferry to explore the waters. Hop atop the English Double-Decker bus and tour the historic fishing village to see Blackbeard’s home and the mysterious Old Burial Ground. DOWN EAST
Down East is comprised of a few coastal communities located east of Beaufort. Known for their slow-paced living and thriving commercial fishing industries, it’s safe to say that many of the people living here spend more time on water than on land. The scenic byway of U.S. Route 70 is a great way to appreciate the unique coastal ecosystem of this area. The annual Core Sound Decoy Festival draws in people throughout the coast to celebrate the heritage of hand-crafted duck decoys.

6 ways to save
the sea turtles 01
02
03
04
FILL IN HOLES - Be sure to fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before you leave the beach. Turtles can get stuck or injured in them while laying their eggs or heading out to sea. REDUCE YOUR PLASTIC USE - Carry reusable water bottles and avoid straws to reduce plastics on the beach. If you bring plastics to the beach, make sure you recycle them accordingly.
PICK UP TRASH - Before you leave the beach, sweep the beach for anything that might have been left behind by you or your neighbor. Be on the lookout for plastic bags, which the turtles think are jellyfish - one of their main food sources. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE - If you happen to find a nest or a mother turtle nesting, stay back at least 30 feet. Do not disturb nesting turtles, nests, or the baby hatchlings.
05
KEEP OUTDOOR LIGHTS OFF - Any lights on the oceanside should be kept to a minimum. They distract turtles and keep hatchlings from reaching the sea. Their instinct is to head towards light, which needs be the moon over the ocean and not in the wrong direction.
06
REMOVE BEACH ITEMS - Tents, toys, chairs, and other beach gear should not be left out overnight. They can be hazardous to mother turtles nesting and new hatchlings.

• 1 1/2 sleeves saltine crackers • 1/3 to 1/2 cup softened, unsalted butter • 3 tbsp sugar • 1 can (14oz) sweetened condensed milk
• 4 egg yolks • 1/2 cup lemon or lime juice, or mixed • whipped cream and sea salt for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 350°. Crush the crackers finely, but not to dust. Add the sugar, then knead in the butter until the crumbs hold together like dough. Press into an 8-inch pie pan. Chill for 15 minutes, then bake for 18 minutes or until the crust colors a little. While the crust is cooling (it doesn’t need to be cold), beat the egg yolks into the milk, then beat in the citrus juice until thoroughly combined. Pour into the shell and bake for 16 minutes until the filling has set. The pie needs to be completely cold to be sliced. Serve with fresh whipped cream and a sprinkling of sea salt.

Cape Lookout Craving some adventure on your Crystal Coast Vacation? Look no further! Cape Lookout Lighthouse has everything you need for a perfect day. This 163-foot lighthouse stands out on the North Carolina coast for its striking beauty. The checkered design and scenic location make it a perfect place for a little excursion. The “Diamond Lady was built in 1859 and cost only $45,000. It was later painted black and white in 1873, which is how it remains today. The lighthouse is included in the Cape Lookout National Seashore. You can only reach it by a ferry or boat. Visitors are also allowed to climb the 207 steps to see the most beautiful view of the island. Not only does Cape Lookout Seashore have a stunning lighthouse, but it is also home to the horse of Shackleford Banks!
This southernmost barrier island in Cape Lookout has more than 100 wild ponies grazing and enjoying the island themselves. Being one of the only places you can see wild horses on the east coast, the Shackleford Ponies get quite a good bit of attention from visitors. These horses were brought to North America by European explorers, they are descendents of Spanish horses, research shows. Our state strives to keep these horses, safe, happy, and most importantly, wild. They are protected from storms in the maritime forest this coastline provides. The Shackleford Banks is accessible by ferry, or boat. We recommend bringing your camera to take some amazing photos of these wild ponies. This is truly a must see when you're visiting the Crystal Coast.

FORT M ACON S TAT E PA R K
Visit beautiful places. Learn new things. Make memories. Explore our Coast. Want to see some history on your vacation to the Crystal Coast? Fort Macon is the perfect place to bring the family. This Fort was transformed into a park in 1936, and swiftly became one of the most visited state parks in North Carolina. Built completely of brick and stone, this Fort is truly breathtaking. Blackbeard and other famous pirates were known to pass through the inlet and along the outskirts of the fort. Plenty of sunken ships surround the coastline of the fort. It was also captured by the Spanish and the British in the 1700s. The Battle of Fort Macon was the most historic event to take place at the fort in 1862, during the Civil War. This once active fort and now state park brings in over a million visitors each year! Fort Macon brings the history buffs and the beach lovers together in harmony. Walking through the old fort puts into perspecitive just how important this coastline was. Walk the trails of the park along the beach to get breathtaking views of the ocean and the sound. Enjoy fishing, swimming, and the sunshine from this beautiful state park. This undisturbed part of the island truly harvests the beauty this coastline brings to North Carolina. The park is open year-round and is free of charge to all visitors. Fort Macon State Park offers tours, educational videos, a gift shop, and a wildlife museum. This is truly the perfect place to spend a day during your vacation to The Crystal Coast.
