THE RIGHT DIRECTION 8

Sarah Corn, COO at Bluewater Training Antibes, and Kevin Petrovsky, Chief Academic Officer at Bluewater Crew Training USA, tell us all about the world of yacht training, and its relevance for both crew and guests onboard. HOW DID BLUEWATERíS TRAINING DEPARTMENT COME INTO EXISTENCE AND HOW HAS IT EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? Sarah Corn: In Antibes, bluewater’s training department was established in 1991. That first winter, we trained around 50 crew; now we average around 2,000 every year over the training season, from September to June. We offer the complete range of courses, from STCW Basic Training, required by all crew irrespective of their position on board, to those modules required to obtain a Master (Yachts) 3000 COC on the deck side or Y1 certification on the engineering side. Our main regulatory body, the MCA, is constantly reviewing the industry and the last couple of years have seen the introduction of a good six or seven new courses so our catalogue of courses is also constantly changing and evolving.

Kevin Petrovsky: In our U.S. location, United States Coast Guard courses are offered in addition to the MCA, RYA and PYA courses. Many of them are offered concurrently, allowing students to receive certificates for both MCA and USCG. WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR TRAINING COURSES? SC: The most popular course in terms of volume is probably STCW Basic Training. We generally train around 600 crew a year on this course worldwide. To be honest, most of our other MCA and RYA approved courses are popular as well – we are one of the largest training providers worldwide and have a team of experienced, professional instructors who have gained a great reputation among the yachting community.

KP: When crew are well trained, they are able to address day-to-day needs as well as emergency and safety issues with confidence. They work well as a team and create a positive working atmosphere. The vessel is maintained in good condition and stress levels are well managed. This in turn leads to greater crew satisfaction and retention. For owners and management companies, this not only saves money and time with fewer crew searches, it creates a safer and more efficient overall operation. When crew are professional, competent and happy, the experience for owners and guests on board is greatly enhanced. In the competitive charter world, having guests who feel well taken care of, safe and unduly impressed results in repeat charter business year after year. It also creates the word of mouth that helps a charter yacht stay busy through each season. HOW HAS YACHT CREW TRAINING EVOLVED SINCE 1991, WHEN BLUEWATER WAS FOUNDED? KP: The requirements for the industry are constantly evolving. The 2010 Manila Amendments, updates to MCA and IMO requirements, larger vessels and advances in shipboard technology create a dynamic training environment. Bluewater has always maintained a leading position in the training industry. This includes participating in the development and review of new regulations and requirements, serving as a resource to the yachting community, regularly updating training materials, incorporating new training resources and methods and adding new courses as necessary. All of this can be substantiated by simply looking at the percentage of worldwide crew who choose bluewater for their training and the success rates of those students.

KP: Since the industry that we serve is close knit, students find instructors that they come to trust and respect. For us, this is evidenced by the number of students who return time and time again to take the courses they need as they progress through their careers.

HOW CAN A YACHT OWNER CONTRIBUTE TO THE TRAINING OF CREW? KP: First, owners need to make sure that their captains and management companies are ensuring that crew are trained and drilled regularly. They should also want to have crew onboard that have been trained at the best centres. Not all training centres are alike. Standards and practices vary just like in any industry. Owners should identify the training that produces that highest quality crew and encourage captains and managers to hire from those programmes.

WHAT SETS BLUEWATER APART FROM OTHER TRAINING ORGANISATIONS? SC: Despite the fact that we are now one of the largest training providers, we still maintain a small company feel. We pride ourselves on getting to know a large number of crew on a personal basis and hope they know we will always provide a personal touch and go the extra mile to make their experience with us a positive one. We are also the only training company with a crew department literally under the same roof, which has numerous advantages, and can also offer the whole range of skills provided by our management, brokerage and charter departments. That complete service sets us apart. We also have great facilities in all three of the major yachting hubs. This includes up-to-date Transas simulators for ECDIS, Radar and GMDSS courses, training vessels, as well as extensive course materials and learning resources. In Antibes, we have our own fireground and dedicated classrooms for RYA courses, medical and engineering courses, meeting both the theoretical and practical needs.

Owners should also consider joining the ONE Account. In addition to unlimited crew placement, the vessel receives in kind training vouchers equal to the annual fee. By providing paid training to crew, it will attract and retain the best crew to the vessel and provide incentive for crew to stay up-to-date and want to continue their training in order to advance up the ranks.

KP: In Florida, the facility boasts its own indoor swimming pool for survival training courses, high-tech classrooms using Smartboard technology, and student-centred resources like a lounge, weight room, and computer access for CV development. Most importantly, all three locations provide a faculty with credentials second-to-none. It is easy to find individuals with appropriate licenses and experience. It is also easy to find individuals who can instruct. It is not easy to find individuals with the proper credentials who can also provide effective instruction. Bluewater has been fortunate to have developed an international faculty who are experienced and trained in the latest teaching methodologies. They care about student success and spend the time necessary to give each student the best opportunity to succeed in this profession. IN WHAT WAYS DOES A YACHT OWNER OR CHARTER GUEST BENEFIT FROM WELL-TRAINED CREW? SC: Well-trained crew are responsible for the underlying success of both the experience of the owner and the charter guest. Running a smooth ship is a big responsibility for all involved, from the junior stewardess to the captain, and all crew need to be confident in their knowledge. We regularly offer on-board training, particularly in First Aid and Fire, to complete crews before the start of the season to make sure that all crew are on the same page and familiar with the specific equipment on-board.

10

DO YOU HAVE TO BE 18 OR OVER TO TAKE COURSES WITH BLUEWATER? SC: You need to be 18 or over in order to find employment on a yacht. However, in Antibes, Palma and Monaco, we run a programme called Yachting in Action. This two-week programme is for 16 -18 year olds in the summer, during which the teens do STCW Basic Training, and also obtain RYA Powerboat Level II, RYA Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski). This is great fun, either just for recreation or if the student is looking to work on yachts as a definitive career, then they can gain the necessary basic qualifications and be ready to work by the time they turn 18.

KP: In the U.S., bluewater offers a one-week, hands-on recreational boating course for anyone aged 13+, that leads to the issuing of the Florida Safe Boaters card. This card is required for anyone born after 1980 to operate a recreational boat in Florida waters. WHY ARE INTERIOR COURSES IMPORTANT FOR YACHT CREW? SC: The owner or charter guest’s experience on board is often defined by the interior crew, thus it is vital that they are trained to the correct level to offer first class hospitality in every sense of the word. Up to a few years ago, unlike the deck and engineering departments, there was no uniform standard of interior training. This, however, changed some years ago with the introduction of the GUEST program. This offers an extremely well-structured ladder of interior courses from those designed for junior crew, to those aiming to arm the chief stewardess with skills to run her crucial department. The latter range from advanced safety courses to leadership and accounting courses. They also obviously include intensive training in wine and cocktails – again rather vital in determining most guests’ charter enjoyment!

THE BEAUTY OF THE BVIS

34

35

As a yacht charter destination, the BVIs are almost impossible to beat, with over 50 pretty islands scattered like lush gems across the turquoise sea. The islands are located within a short distance of each other, making cruising effortless, and the BVIs offer a multitude of stunning anchorages as well as glamorous superyacht marinas. Providing excellent shelter and calm, crystal clear seas, the BVIs also receive the Caribbean trade winds, making the archipelago a famously good sailing ground as well as a great place for thrilling water sports like kitesurfing.

On a BVIs yacht charter, there is something for everyone. Dive the wreck of the HMS Rhone off Salt Beach, one of the great dives of the Caribbean, or snorkel through the Virgin Gorda Baths, where huge granite boulders create a glimmering playground of sapphire lagoons and ethereal grottos. Hike up to Virgin Gorda Peak for breath-taking views of the archipelago, or horse ride along a beach in Tortola, coconuts washing up on the shore. Strap on your dive tank and make your way along the unforgettable Wreck Alley, where airplanes and boats have been submerged for divers, or just drink coconuts and read books in a hammock in dreamy Trunk Bay. The BVIs are incredibly, deeply peaceful, with no Jet Skis allowed to break the tranquil vibe of lapping sea and afternoon breezes. On the glorious coral atoll of Anegada, explore the 16 miles of powder soft beaches, and watch flamingos stalk across the flats, bright pink against sand and sky. Anegada is surrounded by the incredible Horseshoe Reef, where hundreds of shipwrecks litter the seabed, and a kaleidoscope of fish creates waves of colour in the sunlit sea. The BVI archipelago offers the ultimate superyacht lifestyle, with ultra-luxury experiences to be found throughout the island chain. Visiting Peter Island is a must, whether to relax in their spa centre or dine at Tradewinds overlooking the sparkling sea. Little Dix Bay is a 5-star resort, located on Virgin Gorda Island, that delights with its acclaimed Sugar Mill Restaurant and Rosewood Spa, set in a beautiful 17th century sugar plantation. Yet for all the undeniable glamour, some of the most memorable BVI experiences are a little more rustic. One of the best meals to be had anywhere is at Big Bamboo on Anegada, where you sit at plastic tables a few feet from the moonlit sea, feasting on succulent fresh lobster plucked straight off the reef and grilled over the open barrel fires. Meanwhile, no yacht charter is complete until you have swum ashore for a drink at Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke, indulged in a cocktail at the Bitter End Yacht Club, or danced the night away to a steel band on the deck of Willy T’s party boat. A yacht is really the only way to explore the BVIs, each day waking up in a new picture-postcard anchorage, passing long sunny days swimming and eating, floating from one blissful indulgence to the next. There are so many more Caribbean destinations you could visit on your yacht charter, this is just a small glimpse of what is available to you. The options are endless, and a happy lifetime could be spent cruising the sparkling Caribbean Sea.

THE BEAUTY OF THE BAHAMAS

54

55

On charter in the Bahamas, you can snorkel above well-known wrecks lying in shallow waters or go diving and explore the famous James Bond wreck site, or why not spend an afternoon with the famous swimming pigs, dine at celebrity chef restaurants, or kayak through breath-taking grottos. Imagine no longer. On a Bahamas yacht charter in the Exumas, you will float through this tranquil, sunlit archipelago full of ultra-exclusive islands and footprint-free beaches, cruising from one beautiful coral atoll to the next.

Day 1: Fly into Nassau in the morning, transfixed by the blinding blue water and white islands visible out of your plane window. Within hours, you will be floating through that tropical paradise of sea, sand and sky. Your attentive crew will be waiting to greet you onboard: the stewardesses will help you settle in to your palatial staterooms, the talented chef will prepare a magnificent lunch of all your favourite foods for you to enjoy whilst your captain navigates you through the sapphire sea and to your first stunning anchorage at Highbourne Cay. Day 2: Visit the Bahamian iguanas of Allan Cay before cruising to Warderick Wells, a stunning natural paradise of hiking trails and part of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. Climb famous Boo Boo Hill, explore the Loyalist plantation, visit the sperm whale skeleton, or snorkel and swim the afternoon away. As night falls, the crew can set up a luxury barbecue for you on the beach. Day 3: You will get underway early to Compass Cay, where you can snorkel above a fabricated airplane wreck home to an abundance of exotic marine life, explore the caves of Rocky Dundas, or just hang out with the gentle nurse sharks, tropical fish and graceful rays. In the afternoon, cruise to Big Major Island and be ready to swim with the pigs! Day 4: While their numbers have dropped, the swimming pigs are still one of the Bahamas’ most fantastic attractions. There is nothing quite like seeing the pigs swim out to your yacht, their little pink trotters paddling frantically in the translucent water, fleshy snouts just above the surface. Then cruise to Staniel Cay, where you will visit the incredible Thunderball Grotto, so named after the 007 movie that was filmed there. Finish your wonderful day with a meal overlooking the marina at the Staniel Cay Yacht Club.

Day 5: Spend a morning of fun on the water toys and lazing about on the beach, before enjoying an afternoon on the yacht as you cruise to the stunning and uninhabited Shroud Cay. After dropping anchor and having a late afternoon walk on the beach, get dressed for a cocktail and canapĂŠ party on the sundeck whilst you watch the dramatic Caribbean sunset. Day 6: Shroud Cay is a pristine wilderness of white sand beaches, mangroves, palm trees and birdsong. Kayak up the turquoise creeks, snorkel the reef, cast a line for bonefish in the shallows, or take one of the gentle hikes across the island. Have a picnic on the beach and make the most of your last full day on charter, before returning to the yacht for a candlelit meal under the Bahamian stars.

Day 7: Return to Nassau. With a heart full of happy memories of sunshine and laughter, disembark your yacht and enjoy the buzz of Atlantis Paradise Island Resort with its high-end casino, celebrity chef restaurants, and giant waterslides. Find your island paradise with a Bahamas yacht charter through bluewater.

HOW CREW How does the crew make your charter special? Let us count the ways! From chauffeur and massage services to organising Caribbean treasure hunts and unforgettable luxury picnics, yacht crew almost certainly do more than you imagine, by going above and beyond to deliver the yacht charter of your dreams. As experienced charterers know, what makes a charter extraordinary - even more than the features of the yacht itself - is the crew. A great yacht crew is what elevates your yacht charter from the great to the sublime. Here are some of the ways the crew make your yacht charter special. 1. THEYíRE AMAZING WITH YOUR CHILDREN Yacht crew aren’t employed as babysitters during the charter due to their busy daily schedules, but they’re always on hand to teach your kids water sports, as well as organise activities like Pirates of the Caribbean treasure hunts, cupcake decorating with the stew, or fishing off the aft deck at night. 2. THEY MAKE THE YACHT FEEL LIKE YOUR HOME In a hotel, no matter how high-end, you never feel like you’re in your own space. Charter yachts are different, as the crew work very hard to create an atmosphere of privacy and escape for you and your loved ones. Because it’s just your family and friends with no strangers around, the yacht feels like a luxurious home away from home within the first day. 3. THEYíRE YOUR DEDICATED PERSONAL ASSISTANTS AND TRAVEL PLANNERS The captain and chief stew are a wealth of knowledge, with plenty of suggestions about local activities and restaurants. Want to go quad-biking, horse riding, or take a helicopter trip? The captain will come to you each morning with a range of options, and they’ll also lean on their connections to get you VIP reservations at the hottest tables in town. 4. THEY PERSONALISE EVERYTHING TO YOU You may not realise, but the crew are busy memorising your every preference from the second you step aboard. How you like your coffee, what time you get up, which newspaper you read, which sunglasses are yours. All of this is noted so they can deliver seemingly effortless service. A lot of effort goes into this level of personalisation, but their job is to make sure you never know how hard they’re working. What is ideal for you depends very much on your yachting dreams, and your bluewater yacht broker will match you with the perfect yacht crew to meet your charter needs.

STEWS IN YACHTING

During your yacht charter, the chief stewardess is responsible for the interior of the yacht, as well as being the party planner, flower arranger, sommelier, cocktail maker and the chambermaid. The role of chief stewardess is one of the most exciting and challenging positions onboard, and the perfect candidate will always go the extra mile to ensure that your charter experience is above and beyond your wildest dreams.

WHICH QUALITIES DO YOU THINK THE PERFECT CHIEF STEWARDESS SHOULD HAVE?

Patience! (Laughs) In my opinion, a chief stewardess should be kind, organised, polished, confident in their own role, and always thinking one step ahead in any given situation. Not forgetting adaptability, a great chief stew should always be able to adapt to the guests, the culture and the requests that may be presented to her. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE? Being busy with challenges and the unexpected. The fast-paced environment of a sailing yacht during a busy regatta with a full professional sailing crew, or a charter boat that is back-to-back all season, is the perfect way to keep me busy and happy. Also, the creative aspect as I love being able to create an environment with my team for guests, whether this is a dinner service, a private party or simply setting up a playroom for the children. TELL US ABOUT A TYPICAL DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CHIEF STEWARDESS. There would be a full itinerary planned for the day. Starting with breakfast served at the most spectacular anchorage with a beautifully themed table setting. Maybe they would have a swim after breakfast or take a tender ashore to explore and do some shopping. Often, we would have a yoga session or work out on the deck before mid-day whilst the service stews prepare a new table setting for lunch. After the morning activities, the guests would return to the table for a delicious lunch of local produce and freshly caught fish or lobster. The late afternoon would normally be for relaxing in the Jacuzzi, and we would take this opportunity to set the sails and move to a new anchorage. Whilst the sun is setting the guests can enjoy a cocktail, and we will prepare the top deck for dinner with some soft music and candles. My team would always try and incorporate something with a local twist, infused with the guests’ preferences. Dinner would showcase an array of exquisitely prepared food paired with the best wine. Onboard we are lucky to work with incredible chefs who are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is fashionable! After dinner, depending on the guests, we would organise an evening stroll ashore or gather to star gaze whilst some of the men enjoy a cigar. WHAT IS THE BEST EVENT YOU HAVE ORGANISED ONBOARD? A private party in Gocek,Turkey. The yacht was stern to, we had an ice bar, plush white leather sofas and white linen gazebos with elegant white fairy lights everywhere. Everything was white. The yacht was lit up with candles and there were no other yachts or people around. It was the perfect evening. We had flown in a famous Russian band and set up a private concert for our 8 Russian guests. It was spectacular. WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL REQUEST YOU HAVE RECEIVED WHILST ONBOARD? The list is long. We once sent a helicopter on a 2-hour flight for tea. That was a first! HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR GUESTS FEEL SPECIAL? I always read the preferences after a quiet meditation and a clear mind. Once I have a “feel” for them, we will discuss as a team and think about how we can make a difference to their charter. However, once you meet the guests, it is all about doing what they would like and adapting any plans to their requests.

ETHIOPIA

Lalibela in northern Ethiopia is home to eleven rock-hewn churches carved below ground. Built in the 12th century, apparently after God came to King Lalibela in a vision and ordered him to build the “New Jerusalem,” the subterranean monoliths attract tens of thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year. Set aside a full day to explore the holy sites, including the Church of Saint George, the House of the Saviour of the World and the Ark of the Covenant, guarded fiercely by a virgin monk. Long drives are necessary to explore Ethiopia’s ancient treasures and allow opportunities to observe the daily lives of the country’s 80 plus tribes. Known as the Camelot of Africa, Gondar is a 30-minute flight north-west from Lalibela, where seven castles and palaces can be explored within the royal enclosure.

A five-hour drive northeast from Gondar is “the roof of Africa.” The Simien Mountains are UNESCOprotected and boast Ethiopia’s highest peak, the 4,550-metre Ras Dashen. Gelada monkeys and rock-climbing walia ibex can be found here. A 12-hour journey south from the mountains, by air and road, is Lake Langano, the heart of the East Langano Nature Reserve, which attracts an abundance of wildlife.

One of the hottest places on earth, the Danakil Depression gives rise to the Bale Mountains, 250 kilometres south of Lake Langano, where temperatures plunge to well below zero and where the critically endangered Ethiopian wolf roams. Nomadic tribes, ancient ways of life and otherworldly landscapes make Ethiopia a destination like no other.

THE BEAUTY OF ALASKA

90

91

On an Alaska yacht charter, wildlife is everywhere, as the beautiful summer weather transforms the Alaskan fjordlands into an explosion of life and colour. Grizzly bears fish for spawning salmon in burbling snow-melt rivers, seals bask on rocks, and killer whales hunt in quiet bays, their gleaming black and white bodies breaching against backdrops of mountain and sky. Grey wolves flit quietly through the timber, mighty birds of prey wheel through the skies, and friendly dolphins and porpoises follow your charter yacht, playing in the bow wave.

An Alaska yacht charter is an adventure into a pristine wilderness, where every moment feels like you’re living inside a National Geographic documentary. Hike or horse ride into the quiet mountains, fish for halibut and salmon, or take a seaplane above the fjordlands, looking down at glaciers and green mountain valleys. Have a picnic on a secluded beach, kayak through icebergs carved by water and wind into shapes of wild and incredible beauty, and soak tired muscles in hot spring pools deep in the forest. Return to your yacht and relax in the steaming Jacuzzi, watching the scenery float past in the land of the midnight sun, or curl up in the sky lounge with a warming hot chocolate as the mist creeps down from the mountains.

BEAUTY OF GREECE

102

103

THE BEST GREEK ISLANDS TO VISIT BY SUPERYACHT

While there are dazzling cruising grounds across all of the Greek islands, the most popular islands to visit by motor yacht or sailing yacht are the famous Cyclades and Ionian archipelagos, as well as the dreamy islands of the Saronic Gulf.

On a Cyclades yacht charter you might have an afternoon drink at a cliff-top bar in Santorini, watching the sun sink into the Aegean in a stunning volcanic landscape. In Mykonos, stroll the whitewash and bougainvillea-lined streets for a spot of designer shopping, and as the sun sets head for dinner at one of Mykonos’ stylish restaurants before hitting the A-list clubs to dance until dawn. The nearby island of Delos is like an open-air museum, with sculptures and ruins crumbling under an ancient sky, and you can dive with rare Mediterranean monk seals off the island of Dragonisi.

In the Ionian Islands, you will drop anchor off breath-taking Navagio Beach, where a huge shipwreck sits on soft sands, hemmed in a sweep of towering cliffs and crystal-clear seas. Swim with loggerhead turtles at Turtle Island, windsurf at Lefkada, or stroll the olive groves of Ithaca, the suspected birthplace of Homer’s hero Odysseus. Marvel at the acoustics of classical concerts held in Drogarati cave in Kefalonia, explore the many blue grottos carved into the soft limestone coast, and wander the Byzantine palaces of charming Corfu.

THE BEAUTY OF THE BALEARICS

110

111

Yet amongst all the breath-taking scenery of the Balearics is a thrilling, cosmopolitan heart, as your yacht floats between PalmaĂs soaring cathedral and elegant Michelin-star restaurants, and glamorous island villages of boutiques and art galleries, bougainvillea glowing pink against whitewash and sparkling sea.

Ibiza may still be the undisputed party capital of Europe, but the crowd is increasingly exclusive, with a jet-set scene and cliff-top spa hotels with jaw-dropping Mediterranean views. The incredible clubs attract the crowds with an electric atmosphere, but when you want a break from the sizzling party scene, Ibiza enchants with its pretty old town, medieval castles, and quiet hill villages. Horse ride on the beach, browse the markets, water-ski off Tagomamo Island, and finish the day with a drink at one of the beach clubs of Playa d’en Bossa, as the White Isle party heats up again.

THE BEAUTY OF SAILING

138

139

YOU GET TO TAKE PART

On a sailing yacht charter, you can be part of the sailing action, adding a whole new dimension to your vacation as you master new skills and learn how to sail a superyacht. Sailing yacht charters are brilliant for families with kids, corporate team-building charters, or just a group of friends wanting a new adventure. When you have had enough of hoisting sails or manning the winches, let the professional crew take over and you can sit back and relax on deck, enjoying the sun and a light breeze on your face.

SAILING YACHTS HAVE ALL THE SUPERYACHT LUXURIES

While professional racing sailboats will still tend to keep their interiors lightweight and functional, sailing superyachts have stunning split-level interiors with lots of light and palatial staterooms. Out on deck on modern sailboats, don’t be surprised to find sophisticated entertaining areas like sunken lounges, glamorous dining spaces, outdoor cinemas and even Jacuzzis. Most modern sailing yachts carry WiFi and state-of-the-art AV systems for all your entertainment needs, as well as a wide range of water toys for fun on the water.
