A Book Review

Elisabeth Grant-Gibson is a writer, humanitarian, globetrotter, and bon vivant. She is a Certified Health Coach and a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader and serves on the Advisory Board of the Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration.

Anticipating the 34th Annual Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration, February 23-24, 2023, Bluffs & Bayous offers this in its series of reviews for books integral to the conference’s presentations and discussions.

Danielle Dreilinger’s book, The Secret History of Home Economics, begins with a preface called “Everything You Know about Home Economics is Wrong.” I believe she may be right about that.

Most of us know only what we or our friends experienced in high school “home ec” classes. If your memory includes baking brownies and sewing an apron or a pillow, then you are like most people who grew up in the 1950s through the 1970s. Yet there is an entire history of the amazing women scientists (and a few good men) who created and developed a field that integrated home life with science, economics, efficiency, technology, and innovation. Though many of these women did cook and sew, they also examined fibers under microscopes to learn how to work with different fabrics and studied microbiology to learn more about the microbes in food. These women stepped through whatever doors were open to them in order to eventually get what they truly wanted—a chance to work in excellent labs and do meaningful research and experimentation in order to make women’s lives, and everyone’s lives, better, safer, simpler, healthier, and more fulfilling.

Home economists made tremendous contributions to the war efforts for both World War I and World War II. They designed uniforms; they developed nutrition programs to improve the generally poor fitness of many American soldiers; and they taught Americans how to cook without wheat, meat, and other precious commodities that were being sent abroad even before the United States joined those wars.

Dreilinger’s book interweaves many different societal threads, among them the struggle of women for education and for a fair place in the world, the problems faced by Native Americans and AfricanAmericans of endemic racism and separate-but-unequal treatment under the law, and the developing changes in home life that accelerated throughout the 20th century.

The United State’s space-program victories might not have been as successful and might certainly have taken much longer to achieve without the work of many behind-the-scenes home economists. Back in the early 1960s, no one really knew how zero gravity would affect the human body. Would astronauts be able to swallow? Would the digestive system work without gravity? Could food be made light enough to include in the limited size and space of the first capsules, with enough nutrition to support the bodies of the astronauts for several days, and flavorful enough to entice those on the space flights to continue eating throughout the journey? Could that food be crumb free since even the smallest crumbs could block an important filter or piece of equipment? After months of study and experimentation and lots of taste-testing by the astronauts themselves in “Bea’s Cafe,” “space food” was born.

This “secret history” spends significant time talking about Ellen Swallow Richards, who was accepted into MIT just a few years after its doors opened and who graduated from there in 1872, and Margaret Murray Washington, a Mississippi native who became the third and final wife of Booker T. Washington and who was a powerful figure in her own right as Dean of Students at the Tuskegee Institute and a mover and shaker in many different realms. But these are only two of dozens of women highlighted in Dreilinger’s research. All of these figures are fascinating, and learning about them now offers a deeper understanding of just how limited and tunnel-visioned much of the history we have been taught in the past century has been.

This book offers a welcome addendum to “What We Never Knew.” The Secret History of Home Economics is bursting with information and data, yet it is also fascinating reading. I came away from the book with my mind blown by the amount of history that I was completely ignorant of.

Those in our area will have a chance to meet Danielle Dreilinger when she comes to join us for the 34th Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration on February 23-24, 2023. The theme for the 34th NLCC is “The Better Half? Fact, Fiction, or Fable.” Dreilinger’s book is available in hardcover, paperback, e-book, and audiobook.

50-Year Class Reunion Gathering

On October 22, 2022, a 50-year class reunion was held at Trinity Place Event Venue in McCall Creek, Mississippi, for a group who began school together at Jefferson Elementary School in Fayette, Mississippi, in 1960. This group continued together for the next 10 years. However, many eventually attended several different neighboring schools. This special “reuniting” of the graduates of 1972 was enjoyed by a group of more than 50. Many had not seen each other in 50-plus years!

GEM The Jackson Street Gallery

AHidden

Located at Mulberry in Vicksburg

Are you on the hunt for an upscale hotel offering residential studios and lofts with Air B&B options, entertainment sites, views of the Mississippi River, and an art gallery filled with selections from Vicksburg artists and artists from throughout Mississippi? Such a venue is Vicksburg, Mississippi’s Jackson Street Gallery at Mulberry.

Right: Lenore Barkley stands next to her painted eggshell pieces, inspired by Japanese pottery art.

This uniquely restored residential and hotel locale with its eclectic art gallery are the result of an ingenuous partnership between Mulberry owner Sunny Sethi and curator Paula Jackson, who with her husband Sandy owns Jackson Street Gallery in Ridgeland, Mississippi, a gallery of only Mississippi artists’ paintings.

Paula Jackson and Sunny Sethi met when he was completing the restoration of the 1929 Walthall Hotel in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. He asked Jackson, a twenty-years-plus veteran of the art gallery business, to create a “pop-up” art show for the hotel’s grand opening, a successful event that strengthened their mutual respect and initiated their long-term friendship.

Soon after his restoration of Mulberry in Vicksburg, Sethi invited Jackson to come see the building. Standing in the foyer just beyond the entrance steps, he asked her, “What do you think of this space?”

To his inquiry, she exclaimed, “I like it!”

desk is a small Parisian-styled, café-seating area with a glass wall and entrance that offer a relaxing view of the pool area. On trend with the modern, sophisticated mood of the décor, an enticing bar beckons visitors to visit the café; or guests may opt to stroll through double doors into the Jackson Street Gallery at the end of the lobby. Seating throughout the gallery provides opportunities for viewers to study the works of a variety of Mississippi and local Vicksburg artists. Deftly placed lighting illuminates the area, accenting the paintings; and in the center of the gallery a rotunda enables natural light to enter, creating a circular space for viewing art from the top of the walls to their base at the floor.

Such a chic atmosphere at Mulberry lends itself to hosting intimate cocktail parties as well as seated dinners in a setting enhanced by Mississippi gems. General Manager, Vantashi Smith, sometimes known as “Miss Mulberry,” runs this riverfront residential and Air B&B hotel with its forty-one, well-appointed

Residential & Hotel Locale

He followed with another question: “What do you think about staging an art gallery in this area?”

Again, she replied, “I like it!” That was all it took, and her creative juices began flowing. She called her artist-friend Lenore Barkley, retired from her twentyeight years with the Vicksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, and began talking with her about this project. Before the end of the conversation, Barkley was sold on collaborating with Jackson, explaining, “There is no project that I would want to go back to work for, other than this project.”

Jackson then began reaching out to the artists showing in her gallery; and Barkley contacted some Vicksburg artists, piquing their interest to showcase and sell their work in the new Jackson Street Gallery at Mulberry. In a few short months, the stars and the mutual efforts of Jackson and Barkley aligned; and all was ready in August 2022 as the Grand Opening of Mulberry and the Jackson Street Gallery welcomed over 500 attendees.

Unlike their experience at traditional hotels, guests arriving at this riverfront hotel enter a foyer that leads them down a stairway with gold-gilded banisters to the venue’s front desk and lobby. Across from this

rooms boasting spectacular views of the river and downtown Vicksburg on the second and third floors. Fourth through seventh floors are designated for residential living with fifty-two apartments and studio apartments. The rooms designated for Air B&B are fully furnished for weekend getaways in a luxurious setting in the midst of downtown with its many activities.

Smith, Jackson, and Barkley work together to assure that all visitors’ needs are met when they drop by the gallery or are guests of the hotel. The three speak highly of Sunny Sethi as the behind-the-scenes magician who has trusted these smart, talented, savvy businesswomen to continue the vision that Mulberry has established. As the three discussed this vision of excellence, they referred to Mulberry as a “hidden gem.” With its many-faceted options for living, visiting, relaxing, and enrichment, it certainly is a hidden gem, one well worthy of continuous discovery by a discerning public.

Adams & Brown Wedding

On June 25, 2022, Juliana Adams and Timothy Benjamin Brown were happily married at the First Baptist Church in Brookhaven, Mississippi, with the groom’s father, Reverend Timothy Bash Brown, head pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Vicksburg, Mississippi, officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Warren and Maryjane Adams of Smithdale, Mississippi, where the bride had lived the entirety of her life. She is the granddaughter of Mary Margaret Adams of Smithdale and the late Bobby Adams and of the late O. M. Latham and the late Joan Marie Latham, both formerly of Smithdale.

The groom is the son of Timothy and Le Brown of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and is the grandson of Mrs. Margaret Brown of Natchez, Mississippi, and the late Allen Brown of Natchez and of the late Bobby Robinson and Jan Robinson of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Escorted by her father, the bride wore a one-of-akind, custom-made gown from Lace Bridal in Brandon, Mississippi. For her bridal bouquet, she chose an assortment of flowers including peonies, ranunculus, orchids, roses, and hydrangeas.

Attending the bride were Mikaela Smith Brister, matron of honor, of Ruth, Mississippi; Kaitlin Delaney Wallace of Madison, Mississippi; Alissa Marie Adams of Smithdale; Anna Ware Brown of Vicksburg; Caitlin Adams Burnett of Madison; Katie Elisabeth Cunningham of Brookhaven; Mary Elizabeth Cunningham of Brookhaven; Alilynn Alexis Fauver of Brookhaven; Kelsey Alayna Freeman of Smithdale; Jordan Penn Harp of Monticello, Mississippi; Caitlin Brooke Holley of Waynesboro, Mississippi; Reagan Leigh Newton of Tupelo, Mississippi; junior bridesmaids Ann Allyse Adams and Mary Claire Freeman, both of Smithdale; and Lucy Frances Burnett, flower girl, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Delmus Tyler Cunningham of Brookhaven.

The florist for the wedding was Michael Guttuso from Fernwood, Mississippi. His arrangements were displayed in gold and clear urns complemented with assorted candles.

Wedding director was Susan Gibbes, a close friend of the bride, from McComb, Mississippi. Once the ceremony ended, an elegant reception honoring the newlyweds and hosted by the bride’s parents was held at Butterfield Mansion in Brookhaven. During the reception, hundreds of guests, family, and friends gathered to dance, eat, and celebrate the occasion.

Ken Dixon, head caterer and owner of Mitchell’s Catering in Brookhaven, Mississippi, provided elaborate, delectable food for all. The bride’s traditional wedding cake with buttercream icing, designed by the Cocoa Bean of Hammond, Louisiana, featured seven tiers with the two middle layers a strawberry-filled cake with homemade whipped icing. The Cocoa Bean also made the groom’s cake, an Ole-Miss-inspired cake in the shape of a football jersey with his number on it and a helmet. Floral arrangements displayed throughout the mansion reflected the bride’s specific designs for the occasion.

Music for the reception was provided by the Topher Brown band who enticed guests to dance the night away. Johnny Smith, owner of Johnny Smith Photography, captured the fun and the memories of the events for the newlyweds. Earlier, he had taken engagement photos of the couple in Oxford, Mississippi, a signature location for them since Ben was a four-year starting football player for the Ole Miss Rebels.

Once the reception ended, the newlyweds left Butterfield Mansion, heading to New Orleans, Louisiana, on the way to their five-day honeymoon at a lovely resort in Antigua. Thereafter, they settled into their new home in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Ben is a member of the Cincinnati Bengals.

On the eve of the wedding, the bride was honored with a luncheon at the home of her aunt, Amy Seago Adams, of Smithdale, Mississippi. Also hosting the luncheon were Pattie Seago and Ann Coney, of McComb, Mississippi. That evening, the couple attended their rehearsal dinner at the Ole Towne Church in Brookhaven, Mississippi.

Escorted down the sanctuary aisle by her father, the bride wore an ensemble from Magnolia Mariée Bridal Boutique of Natchez. The Stella York dove-satin bridal gown featured a curved plunging neckline, a wide waistband with glamorous bow, and a softly flowing skirt with button detail added to its full length. The open back was framed with wide-set straps for a unique keyhole effect. Completing her elegant ensemble, the bride wore a cathedral-length blusher veil lined with crystal beading, and she carried a bridal bouquet of mauve and white roses with eucalyptus. The bouquet was accented with a handkerchief made from the bride’s baby bonnet, given by the mother of the bride; with wedding-bell detail taken from the bride’s mother’s wedding dress; and with a handkerchief borrowed from the groom’s paternal grandmother, all pinned together with a gold cross pin worn by several generations of the groom’s paternal family.

Attending the bride were Ellen Upton, matron of honor, of Brookhaven, Mississippi; Abby Massey, maid of honor, of Natchez; and bridesmaids Anna Brook Parvin and Allyson Barry of Brookhaven; Kristina Seyfarth and Olivia McKinley of Jackson, Mississippi; and Anna Leigh Breedlove of Northport, Alabama. All wore mid-length, smokey-quartz satin dresses from Magnolia Mariée Bridal Boutique. Serving as flower girl was Ann Francis Moffett daughter of David Moffett and Mary Catherine Moffett of Birmingham, Alabama.

The groom’s attendants included William Foggo, best man, of Brandon; and groomsmen Bobby Provine of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Nathan Gieb of Oxford, Mississippi; Bobby Tallant of Ridgeland, Mississippi; Gene McDonald of Gainesville, Georgia; Caleb Upton of Brookhaven; and Griffin Kennington of Canton, Mississippi. The groom and his attendants wore Calvin Klein navy-blue suits with champagne ties, all from Men’s Wearhouse of Jackson. In addition, the groom wore a personalized tie clip and special wedding cuff links, a gift

from the bride. Serving as ring bearer was Mason Hof, son of David Hof and Lindsay Hof of Florence, Mississippi.

During the ceremony, harpist for the prelude, processional, and wedding march was Merisha Gore of Natchez, who also accompanied vocalists Anna Kate Rimmer and Sarah Grace Zetterholm of Clinton, Mississippi, as they sang “Wonderful, Merciful, Savior” during the lighting of the unity candle.

Floral Designer for the wedding was Sharman Hart of The Flower Station in Natchez; church ceremony director was Mitzi Slatten of Vidalia; and wedding coordinator was Debbie Bairnsfather of Monterey, Louisiana.

Following the ceremony, the wedding party, family, and guests enjoyed a reception overlooking the Mississippi River at Weymouth Hall in Natchez. A dear friend of the bride’s family, Donnie McIlwain along with his band, “Mack Daddy,” provided music throughout the evening, highlighted by the bride and her father dancing to their favorite song, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” with moves they had choreographed for the occasion.

The evening’s food was catered by Queen Wilson of Southern Style. The bride’s four-tier cake was decorated with mauve and white flowers and topped with a gold F (Foggo) initial. Its layers reflected a combination of the bride’s and groom’s favorites: The top and bottom tiers were white chocolate raspberry cake, one middle tier was lemon with strawberry jam, and the other middle tier was almond cake with Chantilly filling. The groom’s cake was a two-tier strawberry cake with cream cheese icing. Its first tier was New Orleans Saints themed to reflect his favorite NFL team, its second tier was Mississippi State themed to reflect his favorite college team, and the top featured a Mississippi State cowbell. The celebratory cake knife was the one used by the groom’s parents at their wedding. Both cakes were created by Haley Williams Weaver.

Ceremony and reception decorations were provided by family and friends of the bride. For both venues, Stacy Landers of Stacy Landers Photography in Natchez furnished the photography. Emily Claire Felder of emilycfphotoandfilm in Brookhaven furnished the videography. Assisting the bride and her attendants were hair stylist Meghan Wood and make-up artist MaCee Crouch from C’est Jolie Salon in Natchez.

After their honeymoon in Scotland and Ireland, the couple is at home in Clinton, Mississippi.

Pre-wedding events included a bridal luncheon in the Queen’s Room at historic Stanton Hall hosted by Gwen Massey and Sherry Gill the day before the wedding. That evening, the groom’s family hosted a rehearsal dinner in The Castle Restaurant at Dunleith Historic Inn where the bride and groom were surprised with a slideshow and an array of videos from close friends and family, all organized by Ellen Upton, the bride’s sister-in-law and matron of honor.

Ward & Smith Wedding

FFebruary 26, 2022, was the perfect day for the exchange of vows between Laney Kaye Ward of Smackover, Arkansas, and Mason Landon Smith of Brookhaven, Mississippi. Surrounded by their family and friends, Laney and Mason celebrated their marriage at The Hideaway at Reeds Estate in Brookhaven. Officiating the ceremony was Pastor Noah Hill from Oasis Church in Camden, Arkansas.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joey Ward of Smackover, and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Ward of Smackover and Mr. and Mrs. Darwin May of Camden.

The groom is the son of Mrs. Renae Smith and the late Michael Lee Smith of Brookhaven. His grandparents are the late Mr. and Mrs. James “Ed’ Crosby and the late Mr. Winfred Pete Smith and Mrs. Glyndale Thrasher Smith of Brookhaven.

The bride and her bridal party got ready together in The Hideaway House located on the Reeds Estate property. The bride’s aunts served a delicious brunch for the ladies as they had their hair and makeup done by Mill Town Salon & Day Spa.

In her dream wedding dress, the bride was escorted down the aisle by her father. Her chosen gown had a smoky lavender underlay covered with white chiffon and delicate embroidered flowers flowing down from the bodice. Her veil, cathedral length with rhinestones, was her “something borrowed” and completed the look.

The bridesmaids wore gowns of assorted shades of sage green and varying designs. The matron of honor was the bride’s sister, Allie Freeman of Niceville, Florida. Allie’s daughters, Heidi (4 years) and Lilly (9 months), were the flower girls. The rest of the bridal party was made up of dear friends and family of the bride: Kaitlin Lamb of Bentonville, Arkansas; Skylar Wood of Smackover; Kayla Day of Colmesneil, Texas; Taylor Colyer of Florence, Mississippi; and Kelsey DeVazier, Hannah Bates, and Carly Dickerson, all of Brandon, Mississippi.

Attending the groom as his best man was his brother, Judson Smith of College Station, Texas; and his groomsman was his dear friend Jason Snider of Brookhaven. They all wore dapper brown wool suits with sage green ties. The ring bearers were the groom’s cousins, Pearle and Daisy Gillen, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Dain Gillen of Liberty, Mississippi.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the Cypress Barn. Family and friends were entertained by Cody Dunaway during a cocktail hour while the wedding party and family had pictures. Once the new Mr. and Mrs. Mason Smith made their big entrance at the reception, the Bridge Band played the first-dance song, “I’ll Still Be Loving You,” and the father-daughter dance song, “Butterfly Kisses.” Guests were entertained with upbeat music the rest of the night.

Ken and his talented team from Mitchell’s Catering served delectable heavy hors d’oeuvres. The bride’s cake was decorated by Paula McGowen with fresh florals. The groom’s cake, not only a delicious creation but also a piece of art, was a cheesecake designed and cooked by Maddox Cheesecakes. It was a miniature model of one of the groom’s favorite places—Davis Wade Stadium at Mississippi State University.

The newlyweds departed hand-in-hand toward their waiting Bronco as guests tossed lavender over them. After the couple spent a week in the Tennessee mountains to celebrate their marriage, the groom surprised his bride by ending the honeymoon with a few days at The Biltmore Estate in Ashville, North Carolina. Laney and Mason have since made their home in Brookhaven.

Laney and Mason were blessed with countless friends, family, and vendors who made their wedding day perfect. The day-of wedding coordinator was Carla Snider, and photography was by Tabby Wyant Photography. Elaina Smith Anders, owner of Elaina Anders Designs Flowers & Gifts, designed the flowers for the occasion and created elegant table centerpieces. Laney’s wedding dress was purchased locally at Vows Bridal in Brookhaven. The rehearsal dinner was hosted at Mitchell’s Catering in Brookhaven.

Delegating Wedding Expenses Between Families

While the following is a traditional division of wedding expenses, this is not necessarily set in stone. Many arrangements occur among the bride, her family, the groom, and his family as to who will assume which expenses. Sometimes if the couple are professionals and have been living on their own, they may split the wedding costs versus the families assuming these responsibilities. These listings are merely a suggested guide of traditional costs for both parties.

Casey and Dallas Morris Family perform some Mardi Gras magic on the Christmas tree at their historic Natchez home.

JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2023 | BLUFFS & BAYOUS | 67

French, of course, for Fat Tuesday—will be celebrated this year on February 21. Traditionally, it corresponds with Shrove Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, following the Christian liturgical calendar. Mardi Gras is among the Carnival festivities that occur during the final days before the season of Lent. According to several sources, the word “Carnival” may derive from the medieval word “carnelevarium” that means to take away meat, as Carnival in its religious connection of that time was the last day of festivities before the regimen of Lent that limited the eating of meat. TODAY, MARDI GRAS CUSTOMS FOCUS ON EMBELLISHED DECORATIONS, KING CAKES, PARADES, PARTIES, AND COLORFUL SHINY BEADS OF GREEN, PURPLE, AND GOLD.

People all over the South from Mobile, Alabama, to New Orleans, Louisiana, and beyond, decorate their homes with shimmering tinsel, cascading beads, and beribboned garlands; consume copious amounts of king cake; and take to the streets in lavishly decorated floats and raucous parades to embrace the carnival season.

One family, Casey and Dallas Morris, have been lucky enough over the years to have Casey’s aunts shop for Mardi Gras décor and then travel each year from south Louisiana to decorate the Morris home for the carnival season. Currently, this couple and their children reside in a historic home in downtown Natchez, Mississippi.

Once the Christmas holiday has passed, the Morris family’s giant Christmas tree remains in place, sans its Christmas décor and eager to be embellished in purple, gold, and green ornaments, beads, and ribbons. The mantels in the home also showcase the Mardi Gras spirit as the carnival flair moves throughout the living areas of the home and spills over into entertainment spaces outdoors.

The front entrance is especially striking with its door framed in a garland of colorful balls and ribbons and accented with a lavishly decorated wreath. Beyond the door at each side of the front-steps entrance, lion statues, daring and dramatic, brandish their purple bows in welcoming revelers to the Morris home.

Both Casey and Dallas Morris have participated in Krewe of Phoenix Mardi Gras celebrations in Natchez by serving as a Duchess and Duke for the krewe, being members of the krewe’s board of directors, and hosting many Mardi Gras parties in their lovely home. Undoubtedly, once Twelfth Night caps the Twelve Days of Christmas and commences the Carnival Season, the Morris family will revel once again, celebrating Mardi Gras 2023 in Natchez, Mississippi, and fully embracing Mardi Gras’ famed mantra, Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler! —“Let the good times roll!”
