Many Questions. One Answer. What is the face of today’s autistic child? 83% of children with ASD are boys. 81% are white. But whatever their race or sex, children with autism live lives set apart. They have difficulty communicating and connecting with others. They struggle to form the everyday social bonds most of us take for granted. It’s a frustrating, often lonely, existence. But it doesn’t have to be this way. At the Envision Center, we treat the broad range of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD):

• Classic Autism: Considered the most severe type of ASD. People with Classic Autism have severe difficulty interacting socially. They often show no affection and shun emotional and physical contact with others. • Aspergers Syndrome: A person with Aspergers can exhibit a variety of characteristics and the disorder can range from mild to severe. Children show deficiencies in social skills. They compulsively cling to rituals, getting upset

to any change in their routines. They also have great difficulty in reading body language and social cues. • Child Disintegrative Disorder: Children impacted by this start to regress between the ages of two and four. Their communications skills, social behavior, and fine motor skills can all be impacted.

• Rett Syndrome: Occurs mostly in females and is characterized by poor head growth. Early symptoms include loss of muscle tone, problems crawling and diminished eye contact. • Pervasive Developmental Disorder (Not Otherwise Specified): This includes people who exhibit many or all different types of ASD and do not fit within any of the disorders above.
