Who are you and can you give us a little background about yourself? I feel like I’m writing a Myspace about me! I’m a fairly young model who studies acting. I have a slight Bob Dylan fixation and I collect antique bibles even though I’m not religious in the slightest. I’m not sure what else I can say as I’m still trying to figure out who I am and what importance my past is on who I am currently.

Interview by Vara Ayanna

A

merican Standards is an American hardcore-punk band based out of Phoenix, Arizona. To date they have released four albums with a fifth one shortly on the way. Their high energy and ability to captivate an audience has kept the band going strong. While they’ve had a few hiccups along the way, they haven’t slowed their proverbial roll and continue to produce music. For fans of metal, American Standards is a must listen, and for those less inclined to rock out, your loss. You can purchase their albums on iTunes, Amazon or stream them on Spotify, but you can’t ignore them. American Standards is on the rise, so raise your standards in music and join them on their way to the top of the musical food chain.

B

randon Kellum (vocals) answers a few of our questions about life on the road, what they have in store for the future, and what inspires the band to keep to going. Please welcome American Standards to our pages.

H

ow do you think your music has influenced your generation? To say its influenced our generation as a whole may be a bit ambitious. I’d like to think it’s inspired a select few to think outside the box. To challenge the status quo and decide that they won’t subscribe to tribe mentality. If those people in turn pass this along to others, then a single candle can go on to light a sea of unlit candles.

H

ow was American Standards formed? American Standards is very much a product of its environment. We were all in the downswing of our prior bands when we stumbled across each other. We had a similar vision and went with it. Almost 5 years and several members later, our core members are just as focused as ever.

the creatures of habit are fading off. Innovation doesn’t mean sacrificing your sound and morals though, that’s another mistake too commonly made. You have to path the way rather than follow a step behind your peers or the artists you look up to.

W

hat/who are your favorite songs or artists at the moment? That’s always a tough one. If we’re talking recent releases we’ve always been big fans of Refused, KENMode and Sufjan Stevens. All have had pretty phenomenal albums released this year. Glassjaw also just released a new single that’s pretty much on repeat for us.

H

ow do you want your music to impact others? I’d love for it to recreate that feeling I had when hat do you think about the current I was younger and going to shows. That momentary esstate of music? Good or bad in your cape from whatever’s going on in your life. That genuine opinion? excitement that you get from seeing a band for the first The current state of the music scene can’t be defined as time. The lasting friendships and memories you build good nor bad, just different. The bands that are doing through the scene. If we could do that for one person, well are the ones that chose to adapt and innovate while it’s all worth it.

W

ho are some of your biggest inspirations within the music community? Being a big fan of lyrics, I’ve always looked up to guys like Tom Waits, Keith Buckley (of Every Time I Die) and Aaron Weiss (of MewithoutYou). It’s also great to see activists that really live their message such as Refused, Rage Against The Machine and System Of A Down.

I

f you could only bring three items with you onto a deserted island, what would they be? Food, beer and a boat to get off the island.

H C

ow would you describe your band’s style of music? It’s loud, raw and full of emotion. Labels are for squares.

an you describe the feeling you get when you are on stage? Emotionally it’s very transcendent. No matter what’s going on that day or week, I completely lose myself on the stage for those 45 minutes. Everything just feels right. Physically it feels like being hit by a wrecking ball made out of several gallons of sweat.

W

hat was one of the most memorable shows you’ve ever performed? hen you are not making music, what For a purely selfish response I would say just about are some of your favorite hobbies / every show we’ve played in 2015. Most of us got into touring and things to do? playing live music around 2005. With this year being 10 years later, we’ve had the pleasure of playing all kinds of anniversary shows Extreme grouponing- I literally look for the most random things that would of made the 16 year old versions of us scream like fan to do at a discount and recklessly purchase away. Sky diving, girls. We’ve recently shared the stage with bands like Every Time escape rooms and sensory deprivation tanks were a recent few. I Die, Comeback Kid, Norma Jean, Stray From The Path, He Is Legend hat projects do you have lined up for and ‘68... All awesome experiences. In all honesty though, some of the future? the more intimate shows tend to be the ones that really stick with us. We’re working on a new compilation album for Heart Shaped Canvas (HSC). HSC is a a collective we started that releases hat has been one of your favorite art to benefit non profits selected by the fans. We’re also pretty stops while on tour? excited about finishing up the writing process for our upcoming On the last tour Portland, Hesperia and Salt Lake City full length due out early 2016. were definitely some of the highlights. Cool venues, promoters ow do you think cultivating your music treated us well and I feel we really connected with the show in Arizona has impacted your success? goers. Arizona has been great to us. There’s an abundance of hat is the most rewarding aspect of venues and talented bands to play them. For this part of the states being in a band? it’s also located in such we can tour and hit all the major cities driving 4-6 hours at a time. I’m sure east coast artists may scoff at The downtime. The time between shows where it’s just those drive times but we make due. 4 friends in a van on the way to the next venue. The times when you meet people that ultimately change the way you look at the world. hat advice do you have for aspiring I’ve made some if not just about all of my best friends through musicians? music. I look forward to see what experiences are yet to come. Never expect success. Focus on your art and getting it out there. Everything else is secondary.
