I can’t believe what an amazing experience it was to take an older house in the historic district of Rancho Nevada and give it a makeover with the help of three fabulous designers and a furniture

In Flavor, renowned restaurant designer Elizabeth Blau prepares to open her own restaurant in Summerlin. Honey Salt, a neighborhood eatery, will open at the end of October. Be sure to come by and give it a taste. Also, check out Kyara, a tapas-style Japanese restaurant whose small plates will allow you to taste flavors you have never experienced before! The National Register is a program of the U.S. Park Service of the U.S. Department of Interior that lists the nation’s cultural resources worthy of preservation and is part of a national program that supports public and private efforts to identify and protect America’s historic resources. The Morelli House is also listed on the State of Nevada and City of Las Vegas Registers of Historic Places. Sands Hotel musical director Antonio Morelli and his wife, Helen, built the classic, mid-century modern house in 1959. To avoid the house's destruction, in 2001 the Junior League of Las Vegas moved the home from the Desert Inn Estates to its current location in the downtown Las Vegas Historic District.

An Illuminating Life By Jack Chappell | Photography by Checko Salgado Todd VonBastiaans is a man who looks at the dark and sees the light. Literally and figuratively VonBastiaans, in his professional and philanthropic lives, brings light to complex and difficult situations. Moreover, he’s an eccentric so eccentric that the other eccentrics know it. How else to explain his creation of huge—really huge—fabric and foam pancakes and their exhibition in a Vegas Arts District gallery? It could be his childhood. When he was two, his mother said she was suffering from the flu, enlisted the aid of neighbors to watch her fledgling, and then left. Forever. For the next dozen years, he batted around various foster homes from Chicago to Milwaukee. At the age of six, he learned that getting a sandwich of white bread, butter and sugar from the folks was the signal it was time to grab his caboodle and head out to the Greyhound bus station for a new adventure with new folks. And what adventures! He was entertained at a birthday party by mass murderer John Wayne Gacy performing in his alter ego as “Pogo the Clown,” and then at age seven, collected cans for dollars when his foster parent, a dishwasher, needed money. Finally at age 12, he left the freedom and joy of the under class for life with an upstanding middle class family. After graduating from the theater program at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, he began the career in lighting design that would bring him to Las Vegas in 1996 and provide the means to allow him to do philanthropic work and community service, engage in art collecting and a bit of entertainment globe-hopping. As owner of Alios, Inc., Entertainment and Architectural Lighting, VonBastiaans has provided the light touch to every major Las Vegas resort. His role is artistic, to design with light, and technical, to specify equipment and represent lighting companies and their products to achieve his clients’ objectives. His business is headquartered in the Arts District where VonBastiaans applies his energy and talents to lightening up what had been a dark corner of the community. The District is about rehabilitating and repurposing older buildings, celebrating its historic funk and providing a locus for creative people and endeavors. He serves on the district’s board of directors and, of course, he’s involved with the Neon Boneyard. His community service and philanthropy have included scholarship and intern assistance to his alma mater, and he regularly brings students to Las Vegas to learn that

a theater degree doesn’t relegate one to designing sets for community theater. The Gay and Lesbian Center of Southern Nevada has selected VonBastiaans as its man of the year, recognizing him in its 18th Honorarium event this fall.

If you could do whatever you wanted what would your life look like? It would have banners throughout the arts district . . . nothing says ‘safe neighborhood’ like a banner.

What do you see for the future? Culture, entertainment, and art becoming so dumbed down for global market appeal that less detail and less quality become the acceptable norm.

Who has given you great guiding advice? I was told at an Astro Burger in 1996 that if I wanted to succeed, I needed to be less Todd, less gay, and more like everyone else.

Who have been your greatest influences? Benji, Annie, Penny and all the other orphans of the 1970s.

Performing Powerhouse By Jack Chappell | Photography by Talbot Snow At age 17, Sandy Kastel stepped onto the stage for her first professional singing gig. She fronted her own sevenpiece band and she’s been on stage ever since, although today it’s more accurate to say “stages.” Kastel is a song-writing, performing, recording, radio and Internet phenomenon. She has co-authored three books on self-improvement and is the highoctane leader of the Women in Music and Arts Foundation (WIMA). The nonprofit organization mentors women artists of promise, provides women with creative and business education in the arts, and grants achievement awards and scholarships. “I’ve always been the kind of person who encourages people to be the best they can be, and if I can help, I will,” Kastel said in an interview following her weekly noon Wednesday WIMA Radio Program on KLAV 1230 AM. The show itself was a window into Kastel’s frenetic life. She arrived just as the theme music was playing, chatted amiably with her producer, exchanged well wishes with her board operator, put on her headphones,

arranged her hair and went “on air.” During the program, she conducted telephone interviews with women who had made the leap from artistic to commercial success. Kastel probed each for the steps, secrets and attitudes that contributed to their successes. Somehow, she makes the intense pace look easy. She talks about going to Nashville, home of America’s country music recording industry and, where with Southern grace, they say “bless your heart” as they sharpen up knives and claws for newcomers. Kastel charmed Nashville and her single, “Indiana Rain,” hit number 83 on the chart without the usual “star-making machine” promoting it. “I’m a singer. I always have been and always will be. It’s in my blood.” Her father, Dick Kastel, is a renowned saxophonist who moved his family from Mesquite, Texas, to Las Vegas to join Harry James’ band when his daughter was just a little girl. Later, he worked in Las Vegas’ main showrooms with the “legends,” and Las Vegas became home and home base from which his daughter would take on the world. What is a surprising fact that some of your friends may not know about you? I enjoy taking time off from my busy schedule to explore nature, meditate, enjoy a spa day, read a great novel, or just stay at home and do nothing.

What do you see for the future of WIMA? I see it growing into an organization empowering artists around the world by providing them a community in which they can follow their dreams, explore the possibilities and learn “the business of being an artist.”

What makes you say wow? The ingenuity of children. We begin without limitations. Children remind us of this. They are constantly exploring the world without expectations. We can learn so much about ourselves if we will simply observe ourselves from a child’s point of view.

What impresses you the most about women in music and arts? Our drive and determination. When faced with obstacles and challenges in our lives we find ways to be creative within the most limiting situations. What lies within the female artist is an undeniable passion to accomplish what we desire and there is little that can stand in our way once we make up our minds to do it.

SOUTHERN NEVADA SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES PROJECT

Some will envision low water-use landscapes and single-stream recycling programs; others will see neighborhoods and business districts with long-term prospects for growth and prosperity. If the organizers behind a new local effort have their way, everyone’s dreams will be considered, and the best ideas will be rolled into the Southern Nevada Sustainable Communities Project. The project is funded by a recent $3.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban

Development, which gave a total of $97 million to 56 U.S. communities, organizations and regional areas to help them become more economically competitive through a well-connected network of housing, good jobs, quality schools and transportation. It’s not hard to see the need for this in Southern Nevada, where the economic crisis has hit particularly hard. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the greater Las Vegas metropolitan area’s unemployment is highest in the nation at 12.9 percent, compared with the national average of 8.3 percent. The Southern Nevada Sustainable Communities Project says local housing values have decreased

65 percent since 2006 (compared to 35 percent nationally) and our freeway congestion is the third worst in the western U.S., after Los Angeles and Phoenix. A lack of economic diversity in the region’s job market and large swings in income, housing markets and tax revenues are among the factors contributing to the situation. HUD gave the local grant to the City of Henderson on behalf of the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, the umbrella that encompasses the area’s planning agencies and organizations. Besides the City of Henderson, which is spearheading the effort, it encompasses the cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas

and Boulder City; Clark County; the Regional Transportation Commission; UNLV; the Southern Nevada Housing and Water Authorities; Clark County School District; and the Conservation District of Southern Nevada. Stephanie Garcia-Vause, director of community development for the City of Henderson, says the grant money will allow the coalition to conduct in-depth research, launch public engagement efforts analyzing issues facing the community and propose collaborative solutions to problems. “This plan has the potential to shape the way our community looks and grows over the next 30 years,” Garcia-Vause says. The coalition is charged with building a foundation for long-term economic success and community livelihood. Six task forces will focus, respectively, on economic development, the environment, healthy communities, housing, social equity and transportation. The coalition is currently gathering recommendations for experts to chair the task forces and will make its recommendation in November.

The long-term goal is to create a complete community with everything residents need to prosper, but the project has a concrete, immediate benefit as well: it will allow Southern Nevada to compete for federal implementation funding as it becomes available.

THE DOWNTOWN PROJECT Reclaiming Our City By Christina Gibson | Illustrations courtesy of Downtown Project Not long ago neon signs, wedding chapels and mobsters were the only images brought to mind following the mention of “downtown Las Vegas.” Today, art, history and culture are the new images of downtown, and the Downtown Project is focused entirely on transforming downtown Las Vegas into an integrated and passionate community flourishing with art, music and culture. Following a synchronistic event when Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh learned of the

relocation of Las Vegas City Hall, Hsieh convinced Zappos to embrace the opportunity to move their corporate headquarters to downtown Las Vegas. During this time, Hsieh envisioned downtown Las Vegas as a communityintegrated extension for a Zappos corporate campus where the employees would be inspired to live, work and play in this vicinity. Hsieh believed so strongly that downtown Las Vegas was chockfull of opportunities that he invested $350 million of his own money and founded the Downtown Project.

Central Container Park will include 11,000 square feet of retail space, 3,200 square feet for restaurants and taverns, office space, a children’s playground, performance space and a large praying mantis sculpture with flames shooting from the antennae.

Hsieh’s principles stem from experience, planning ideologies, visionaries and other successful community-oriented corporations. Develop work-live-play areas, create desirable gathering places, encourage human interaction, prioritize education, foster technology, promote small businesses, support music, arts and culture, and commit to the community: a great ingredient list for renovating downtown Las Vegas. The Las Vegas of today would have been unimaginable 150 years ago. Las Vegas was put on the map in 1844 when John C. Fremont found some desperatelyneeded springs bearing water while on a desert journey. He subsequently wrote about these springs, produced a map of them and distributed the map to fellow travelers. “Las Vegas,” Spanish for “the meadows,” was a marsh area abundant with water and vegetation, which

quickly became a gathering place and campground for travelers. The first downtown parcels of land were auctioned off in 1905, Las Vegas incorporated in 1911 and gambling was legalized in 1931. The marshes slowly receded, the pioneers became developers and the travelers became tourists. Casinos became the framework for Las Vegas as gaming and tourism exploded during the next century. Las Vegas became a booming economy fueled by glitz, glamour and dreams of fortune. Community, arts and culture took a back seat to neon lights, thematic architecture and wedding chapels. Downtown Project writer Kim Schaefer started working on the project last year. After meeting Hsieh she, too, became inspired by the opportunity to be part of a renewed downtown.

“Las Vegas wasn’t developed for the people who live here,” Schaefer states. “It was developed for tourists and now we have a chance to be pioneers, to decide again what we want to be, as a city. We can be the most communityfocused city in the place you would lease likely expect it.” Hsieh, Schaefer, their families and nearly everyone involved in the Downtown Project have been so committed to this community, they themselves have uprooted and moved into the highrise condominiums downtown. These pioneers certainly practice what they preach by making the live-work-play model work for them. Schaefer walks to work, shops, socializes and engages in activities downtown as much as possible. Fifteen years is a long time to wait for anything, especially for what is arguably the most colorful and significant historical site in Las Vegas. Still, in the case of the Neon Museum, the interval was definitely worth it.

For too long a collection of 150 old-school neon signs—some dating back to the 1930s—sat unsupervised during the day in a two-acre outdoor space called the Boneyard next to Cashman Center. Museum staff always worked nearby, in Reed Whipple Cultural Center across the street or in an office in Emergency Arts blocks away on Fremont Street.

The center itself is a piece of history. The edifice is the original seashell-shaped La Concha Motel lobby, hailed as an exemplar of what architectural historians call Mid-Century Modern style. Designed and constructed in ’61, the lobby was rescued from the wrecking ball when the La Concha was torn down in ’05. The plan was to rehabilitate and restore the lobby for guests who used to wait near a chain-link fence in the desert sun for staff to arrive so they could tour the Boneyard.

But the lack of an onsite building didn’t always benefit the Boneyard. (Consider that Fitzgeralds casino’s old leprechaun mascot, Mr. Lucky, was accidentally burned by a homeless

for Vegas’ rich visual culture and for the beauty and craftsmanship of a distinctly modern art form.” Indeed, walking through the Boneyard, you feel like you’re in the presence of the extraordinary, of a kind of architecture that was once everywhere and now only gathered in a relatively small space. Beautiful, though unlit, signs from nearly all of Sin City’s iconic hotels are here—Moulin Rouge, Desert Inn, Stardust. Also displayed are signs and mascots of Nevada’s bygone restaurants, bars and businesses. Speaking of business, that’s another thing the unveiling of a new Neon Museum visitors’ center is meant to inspire other than intense nostalgia—increased commerce downtown. Cultural and economic momentum continues to grow in the urban core thanks to Symphony Park and blvdslv.com

However, as shiny, bright and contemporary as these projects are, especially for locals, the endless torrent of visitors to our city still demands a glimpse of our city’s glitzy past. “There is renewed interest in old Las Vegas and in the rediscovery of our historical downtown,” says Bill Marion, who chairs the museum’s board of trustees. “The Neon Museum will play a major role in bringing new visitors downtown, creating more opportunities for tourism growth and adding to the area’s ongoing revitalization.” La Concha lobby isn’t the only structure the museum renovated. The museum’s collection also includes nine restored signs, installed as public art throughout the downtown area. The signs comprise what is called the Downtown Gallery, which extends from Fremont Street at Las Vegas Boulevard and runs west to Third Street. Classic signs, from Aladdin’s Lamp to the Chief Court Motel, are gorgeously lit and animated, and they fit rather nicely along the edges of the booming, oscillating Fremont Street Experience LED-display canopy. Moreover, the center is one of two cool new additions to the museum. Guided tours of the Boneyard are now a big part of the experience. Tours last 45 minutes and are available to the public every half hour Monday through Saturday starting at 10 a.m., with the final tour departing at 4 p.m. (Prior to staff-directed strolls, guests were often left to wander the Boneyard alone.) While it remains generally true that very little historical awareness exists here, the Neon Museum, with a new visitors’ center and guided Boneyard jaunts, is pushing the concept of preservation. It’s an idea that will gain traction as the museum improves its efforts to offer information and visual pleasure for the many drawn to the most American (and most Las Vegas) of art forms: the neon sign. Tickets for Boneyard guided tours are $18 for adults and $12 for students with valid ID, senior citizens, veterans and Nevada residents. Children ages 6 and under admitted free. Capacity is limited. For the past decade, First Friday has grown from a small gathering of die-hard art aficionados to an arts festival that still amazes even longtime residents, and has become a phenomenon that has changed the cultural landscape of Las Vegas forever. Growing from the ashes of the Downtown’s GAME festival (Gateway Arts and Music Experience), a yearly event that began in 1997, First Friday was founded in October 2002, by Cindy Funkhouser, Naomi Arin and the late Julie Brewer. Unlike the GAME festival, First Friday would not be a yearly event but rather a monthly art walk—an

interesting, yet very brave move for a fledgling art event considering that the GAME festival couldn’t survive as a yearly fête. Inspired by a similar art walk in Portland, Oregon, Las Vegas’ First Friday began as a modest gallery walk. Located in just two locations, the Arts Factory and the Funkhouse Antique Shop, with no festival to speak of, First Friday was a simple affair. Cindy Funkhouser and friends went so far as to paint a trail of orange sneaker-prints between the Arts Factory and the Funkhouse just so people would know where to go. Back in 2002 the walk between the two locations

was not as easy as it is today. There were barely any sidewalks to speak of, and street lamps to light the way were non-existent. The very first First Friday welcomed a humble 300 patrons. Though First Friday grew exponentially over the ensuing years, so did the responsibility of maintaining it. As the event expanded from a mere art walk to a full blown festival, the city of Las Vegas stepped in to assist in funding and coordinating parts of the event. Eventually, First Friday grew well beyond its means which threatened its very existence, and the city had to cut back its funding due to the economic downturn.

In 2011, facing financial troubles Whirlygig, the non-profit that ran the festival, had to make a drastic decision to put First Friday on “hiatus” for a few months. The outcry from the artistic community was swift. The community banded together and continued First Friday despite an appeal from the founders not to participate for safety reasons. In the end, the community carried the torch despite the hiatus.

Realizing that First Friday was an important cultural asset worth preserving, Tony Hsieh, CEO of the famed online retailer Zappos, along with several business partners, decided to purchase the struggling festival in August of 2011. Since the acquisition over year ago, First Friday Las Vegas has blossomed. The monthly event consistently draws well over 10,000 festival-goers and is a veritable culture fest full of art, music and food. In March of 2012 the festival welcomed an estimated 25,000 people just to witness a 25-foot wooden effigy of a showgirl named “Lucky Lucy” be burned in honor of the annual Burning Man event in northern Nevada. It’s exciting to think about what the future will hold for First Friday. Will it continue to grow and spread as it has beyond the boundaries of the Arts District? Will it be a Downtown-wide event that encompasses Fremont Street, The Smith Center and all points in between? Or will it become a regional event that includes communities from all over Clark County? These are some of the many questions that come up when musing about the future, but one thing is certain—First Friday is here to stay!

These are not giclées, and print runs are small. The artist, by the very nature of creating by hand, has a deep, personal connection with what they are making. There is great control, but plenty of room for happy accidents which are welcomed, maybe even encouraged. The result is something perhaps a little less manufactured and more individual. “There are people that are really still interested in creating images using an analog technology,” Charles follows up. “It’s just the type of technology we really like.” In the end, “people are making things, and that’s what matters.”

If there were ever a neighborhood in Las Vegas that invites you to call it home, it’s the charming and historic Rancho Nevada community. It welcomes residents with olive tree-lined streets of Mid-Century homes that give the area a fresh, chic vibe yet evokes nostalgia with winding sidewalks and real grass in the front yards. It’s the perfect canvas for BLVDS magazine’s very first Showcase House. Elaine Odeh, owner of an inspirational furniture showroom called Plume, loved the location of the home and knew that by adding some charisma to the clean palette it could become the perfect fit for her, her husband and two young children. The project came together as a collaboration among Elaine, BLVDs and local designers Jill Abelman, owner of Insidestyle, Durette Candito, who owns and manages Urban Ranch General Store, and Michelle DiMauro who, together with

You can never have a first impression a second time, so what better place to begin than with a burst of personality in the entryway designed by Abelman. Usually guests don’t linger in the entry, but a Warhol-style painting and upholstered mirror encourage a pause.

To start the transformation from ordinary to “oh-so-cool,” Elaine gave them her blessing on the design of their choice and the result is a stunning collection of three Las Vegas designers’ brightest concepts worthy of being called a Showcase House.

juxtaposition to the gigantic wooden horse head and the playfulness of a brightly painted glass fish. It makes a big statement that Jill likes and expertly carries into the living room/dining room. Living rooms aren’t the stuffy rooms they used to be and that is apparent here. Tones of silvery gray with a whisper of taupe on the walls are instantly relaxing and welcoming. A Mid-Century silhouette sofa, perfectly handcrafted at Insidestyle and covered with a brilliant modern fabric in turquoise, is a nod to the ‘60s with a contemporary twist. To make this room both functional and fun, Abelman added a large, square coffee table/ottoman covered in a navy crocodile vinyl (virtually indestructible by pets, kids or pizza) and topped with an elegant piece of glass. Grounding the room are two gray velvet chairs with oversized silver nail heads that add durable yet stylish seating. One of the best surprises in the room is an ultra-modern walnut, scoop accent chair by Nuevo that could easily double as a piece of art with its white leather seat and Tibetan lamb toss pillow. A quirky side table made out of car tires adds humor to the space. A rectangular espresso table with a white lacquer inset is the perfect anchor for the adjoining dining room. Three spindle-back chairs, each painted differently, give the space a vintage-chic ambience. A large wall mirror with a wavy pewter frame hangs artfully to catch the light from the picture window and reflects the chrome and glass details throughout the room. Fresh flowers in a long, carved wooden bowl add organic warmth to the modern coolness. Crackled glass finials and chrome rods hold turquoise and white geometric drapes that complete the Mid-Century “happy” vibe that this designer was seeking. 40

Romantic, relaxed and glam was DiMauro’s inspiration for the master bedroom. She likes to start with a piece of art, but when she discovered a bold, hologram wall covering by Osborne & Little in silver and black, she knew she was on her way to the “boutique hotel room” look she wanted. “When I first found this wall covering and saw the fuzzy stripes and hologram effect it seemed so luxe. That’s where my design for the bedroom really took off,” she explains.

The room is on the small side, so symmetry was important in order to keep the room visually clean. Adding an element of art without crowding the wall space, the designer hung two similar modern paintings side by side to function as a headboard. She added matching nightstands and lamps for a crisp balance. Stained concrete floors in mottled black add a masculine touch to feminine elements and are softened by a rich cowhide rug. White custom bed linens with a black and white graphic duvet at the bottom of the bed, along with drapes, all created by Inhabit Design, are luxuriously lit by a cylindrical chandelier with a transparent shade that allows a crystal element to filter a dreamy light into the room. Lavish and luxe, this room looks and feels like a Hollywood Hills hotel getaway.

The heart of every home is the kitchen and this house encourages family time by its open flow into a den with adjoining doors leading outside to the patio. Durette Candito started her design by warming up the space with a backsplash of small, rectangular tiles in slate, gray and taupe.

“The fireplace was a strange structure of sheetrock positioned sideways—there was nothing special about it so it was where I knew I just had to change the design,” explains Candito. The face on the fireplace was replaced and angled to give the room an element of architecture. Honed stone complements the floors, and the walls were painted a relaxing neutral that embraces the stone and tile. This designer cleverly grounded the room with an earthy coffee table and a shimmery, gray cowhide that is surprisingly durable. A gray sectional in modern cubes is sleek and inviting with a little edginess added, thanks to the black leather throw pillows. The big “pop” comes in the form of what the designer calls “that funky chair,” an oversized, high back, leather-trimmed library chair and ottoman that turn ”traditional” upside down with a modern, black and white graphicupholstered back and seat that easily steal the show in this family room. An unexpected reclaiming and repurposing are creatively accomplished on the patio. Candito used existing patio furniture and recovered them in outdoor fabrics with various patterns in shades of blue, turquoise and white. A rustic bench cozies up to a one-of-a-kind coffee table and is the focal point of the backyard. Made out of a product called 3-Form, the material is an opaque, colorful product that can have decorative items embedded in the surface to make it unique and custom.

“When I saw the material, I knew I wanted to use it,” she says. With a natureinspired, bright blue hue, it is perfect for the outdoor table. A white-washed and stainless steel potter’s bench serves as a beverage bar with Mason jar stemware from Urban Ranch General Store. Finishing off the look are honey-colored drapes gracefully framing the seating area, creating an outdoor room that is both dressy and relaxed.

“I was going to dress windows at Bergdorf Goodman. I was ‘sculpture girl’ at Sarah Lawrence. Over my dead body would I work in the family business!” The youngest of six spent hours molding and building, and when she came home to Las Vegas it all clicked. “I drove over the Triborough Bridge every day and appreciated the architecture, but when I came home and looked over the city, I saw jewelry.”

Having just wrapped up her third season collection, “Smoke and Mirrors,” with co-designer Hannah Deutsch, “a great illustrator” and the perfect collaborative force, Polly reflected on each piece as she turned them over in her hands. She spoke of the Vegas of the 1960s, the photos she pored over, the stories she listened to and images that became a collection both structural and glamorous. A bracelet is reminiscent of the lights on The Plaza overhang. Another is adorned with metal bulbs, and rings are stacked in suits of cards. Her favorite is The Golden Nugget ring and necklace inspired by the old marquee. “I’m a storyteller,” Polly says. “The more someone looks at a piece the more it affects them. It is the familiarity of shapes, the overall collection that brings it all together and such a fun way to design. My pieces are laden with meaning.”

Eventually fine and custom jewelry will be her destination. “I had to prove myself with metals and gems . . . but it is custom design that interests me. You are developing something for someone that comes from your own heart and your own mind.” While Polly appreciates the values her father taught her as she combed through the meltdown box as a child, she is clearly coming into her own. “I am a new generation, an artist. Hannah and I are just two art school girls making it in the family business.” As Polly talked about shapes, art and design her eyes lit up, her smile genuine, her demeanor animated. There is passion behind each piece. Art school girl, family business or not, she’s the girl you want to root for, the one who grew up surrounded by diamonds, rubbing the stardust out of her eyes only to create her own. Polly’s studio is a large room that smacks of New York loft-meets-vintage store finds: old sofa, mood board, chalkboard walls, antique desk and a rhino head from the 1930s. It was one of many items acquired by her father, Jack Weinstein, who purchased a small store that once stood on Fremont Street in 1965 and who offered a family legacy to Polly before she even realized it was just that.

Her last collection was previewed on “MTV Style” and this one debuted at Williamsburg Fashion Weekend 2012. While Polly would like The Jeweler’s Daughter to remain a national brand, she will maintain exclusivity as she wants to make a name for herself and considers herself a serious designer. When her pieces are at Barney’s, she jokes, she’ll finally be able to look at her family and say, “See? I told you!”

Polly Weinstein met me in the hallway behind the Tower of Jewels’ showroom on East Sahara, blonde hair loose, wearing a kelly green top and style for days. We walked down a long fluorescent-lit hallway, a stark contrast to the cases of jewels we’d left behind. Polly nodded toward the door. “Isn’t this like... respite?” It was.

As a result, photographers, graphic designers and videographers are commonly asked to take on commercial work for abysmally low pay or for no pay at all. It’s often wellmeaning amateurs who accept these gigs because they think all that is needed to call themselves a designer is software and an assignment.

Formerly known as the American Institute of Graphic Arts, AIGA hosts mixers, lectures and social outreach events to expand awareness and understanding of the economic and cultural importance of professional design. It also hosts an awards event to honor the best of design

Entry level work for interns and students is, of course, a valuable part of the skillsbuilding process, but there is a point where design work is best left to professionals. Enter the AIGA: LV, the professional association for design, committed to advancing design as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force. According to Rick Tomich, interim president of the local branch, Las Vegas is experiencing a resurgence of graphic arts and the role of the AIGA is to help maintain a level of professionalism in this field. It is important to the city’s development.

When I first moved to Las Vegas in 1987, hotels and casinos promoted their 99-cent shrimp cocktails, threedollar steak dinners and all-you-can-eat buffets. No more. Today, celebrity chefs and culinary masters draw tourists to Las Vegas. More than once I’ve had an out-oftown visitor insist on visiting a restaurant run by Todd English, Bobby Flay, Michael Mina, Tom Colicchio, Mario Batali or another renowned chef. Steve Wynn was instrumental in revolutionizing the Las Vegas restaurant scene, and he recruited one woman, Elizabeth Blau, to help him develop his vision. For almost 30 years, Blau has worked in food service. While an undergraduate at Georgetown University, she began working at the famed 1789 Restaurant. She worked her way through a variety of jobs at the awardwinning 1789, eventually becoming pastry chef. After graduating from Cornell School of Hotel Management, Blau joined Sirio Maccioni’s Circo in New York City and moved to Las Vegas to assist Maccioni in opening Le Cirque at Mirage. “It was Mr. Wynn’s idea to elevate food service in Las Vegas,” says Blau. “We recruited Todd English, Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Michael Mina to open restaurants at Bellagio and then developed and marketed the venues to the public.”

Developing all aspects of Honey Salt is a family affair.

Today, Blau and Cateenwalla are busy planning and developing another restaurant. Along with their partner, Jason Lapin, the couple will open Honey Salt this fall. Located in the space previously home to Nora’s Osteria and Wine Bar on West Charleston, Honey Salt will be a comfortable neighborhood restaurant.

“My husband and I love to entertain... love to share meals with family and friends,” Blau says. “We want Honey Salt to be comfortable... to be a place for diners to eat, talk, relax and enjoy.” Developing all aspects of Honey Salt is a family affair. Longtime friends and associates, Randy Apel and Lee Cagle have done the design and drawings for the restaurant. Paintings by Blau’s sister, Alexandra, will adorn the wall behind the bar. Most importantly, though, the restaurant will feature recipes handed down from both Blau’s and Canteenwalla’s families. “The menu is going to be international, and we’ll feature all the foods we love. We’re going to offer Kim’s mother’s chicken curry, my grandmother’s meatballs,

turkey,” advises Blau. “Even our eightyear-old son is making suggestions for the children’s menu. Kim and executive chef Joe Zanelli are busy adapting the recipes, testing them and making decisions for the menu. We all want Honey Salt to be a unique culinary experience.” Blau also notes that Honey Salt will feature fresh ingredients that are locally grown whenever possible. Blau and Canteenwalla have traveled to meet farmers in Nevada, Utah and California and will have a Utah beer on the menu. In addition, they have signed with a Cape Cod fish supplier to have them send fresh fish to the restaurant. Honey Salt, which will seat about 140 people, is due to open at the end of October.

Blau went on to work with MGM when it took over Mirage Resorts, but once again joined Wynn to develop the restaurants for Wynn Las Vegas. A few years later, Wynn hired Blau & Associates to develop food and beverage services at Encore. In addition, Blau and her husband, chef Kim Canteenwalla, partnered with Wynn to open Society Café in 2009. (Esquire magazine named Society Café one of the “Best New Restaurants of 2009.”)

Kyara is a casual Japanese tapas restaurant that does just that, catering to sophisticated tastes and budget-conscious foodies. The space is beautifully designed with clean lines and modern minimalist decor. Petite alcoves surround a center dining 54

bar and open kitchen, piquing the diners’ interest in the food preparation. Most items on the menu are accessible to anyone although there are plenty of options for even the most adventurous of eaters. An authentic robata grill and special charcoal from Japan impart delicious flavors into the variety of skewers offered, many of which are vegetarian friendly. Standouts include the Hamachi Kama (Yellowtail cheek), Gobo Chips (Japanese “French fries” made from burdock root), and Kaisen Chawanmushi (seafood custard). Despite the variety of more unusual offerings, the Rapungi roll featuring spicy tuna remains the most popular item on the menu. A must-try dessert is the Yuzu Citrus Mousse. It is a modest indulgence served in a shot glass with a smooth wooden spoon that mimics the silky texture of the whipped pleasure.

With no item on the menu priced over ten dollars, you can explore the menu to your heart’s content. Trained as a sushi chef in Japan, owner Yasou Komada wanted to venture away from a strictly sushi platform when he opened Kyara. He decided that a small plates concept was the best way to explore the depth of Japanese cuisine and integrate it with other great world cuisines. The eggplant with spicy miso meat sauce is a perfect example of this. With artfully presented tasty dishes, excellent service and modern decor, Kyara is a must-visit restaurant. The Importance of Great Architecture to a City and a Cause By Larry ruvo

The last four decades of my life have been devoted to building brands for wine, spirits, beer and non-alcoholic beverages, and I have been extremely successful in that part of my life. From that experience, I knew that marketing, packaging and, of course, the contents of the package are what make great brands.

With that in mind, I began to visualize a brand, an institution, that I believed could one day be one of the great centers for brain research for Alzheimer’s disease. Initially, with the help of my family, friends and a wonderfully generous community, Keep Memory Alive was formed to fund research and develop a caregiving program. As the years went by, my mentor and friend, and one of the great Alzheimer’s doctors in the world, Dr. Leon Thal, said it would be a disservice to our community and the entire state if we did not build a center for clinical care and for researchers searching for a cure for what was sure to become the next tsunami in health care— Alzheimer’s disease and brain health. It was time to focus on the packaging part of the brand we were building. While I didn’t know anything at the time about building a clinic, I knew that it couldn’t just be a normal, stereotypical medical facility. The building had to have the same level of marketability and panache that the greatest brands that we sell possess. Enter Frank Gehry.

I believe that the building designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry has allowed us to achieve some incredible feats in the three years since we’ve been open: recruiting Dr. Jeff Cummings, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Alzheimer’s disease, partnering with the internationally-renowned Cleveland Clinic, recruiting world-class M.D.s and Ph.D.s to care for patients and lead research, creating a robust program of educational and support services for family caregivers and much more. I notice that the building has a profound effect on people. Our staff feels that they are “failing the building” if they are not innovative and forward thinking, and our patients and families feel immediately that they are with the best when they enter our property. Frank Gehry’s design has brought international attention to our cause, and we now have added focus on other brainrelated diseases including Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, ALS and multiple sclerosis. I am fully convinced that the success, the notoriety, and the national and international support the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health has received would not have happened, and clearly not as quickly, without our building. Frank Gehry’s iconic structure is our brand and, because of our brand, we are able to continue reaching for our ultimate goal of finding cures and ridding the world of these horrific brain diseases.
