Lively Lady visits Malta by Greta Muscat Azzopardi

Lively Lady and her crew have just ended their Malta stopover as part of the boat’s world circumnavigation challenge. Lively Lady is the historic 36 foot wooden sailing boat that was sailed from Britain to Australia and back in 1968 by greengrocer Alec Rose who was later knighted for his efforts. Having met Sir Alec when he was young, current skipper and project mastermind Alan Priddy felt that this encounter was pivotal to making him who he now is. Alan felt that he should give the opportunity that he got through his encounter with

Sir Alec to young adults from difficult backgrounds and thus project Lively Lady was born. Lively Lady is offering up to 50 disadvantaged youngsters the opportunity to realise their potential through a first hand, tough sailing experience. The boat offers little in the way of comfort, being an old, bare and rather small boat; however the experience has positively affected the lives of many. Since the yacht left the UK at the end of July 2006, the 14 skippers and 32 young adults who have taken part so far have sailed their way across the Atlantic and the Pacific.

The project has been sponsored by marine electronics manufacturer Raymarine which is headquartered in Portsmouth, England – the city in which Sir Alec Rose lived and worked. When Sir Alec Rose bequeathed the boat to the city of Portsmouth, he intended that she should be used to help disadvantaged young adults realise their potential. Alan Priddy is therefore continuing this legacy. Alan and his two young crew members, Coral and Michael flew back to the UK for a much needed break and were replaced by a fresh skipper and crew. Alan should be rejoining the crew in Spain for the last few legs to Portsmouth, where Lively Lady should end her long journey on July 5th having spent approximately 260 days at sea covering more than 28,250 nautical miles. You can follow the rest of Lively Lady’s journey via the dedicated Lively Lady website (www.livelylady.net). More information about the Lively Lady project as well as a full interview with skipper Alan Priddy will be published in the July 4th issue of Boats & Yachting magazine.

launched at Grand Hotel Excelsior

The new Riviera 4400 Sports Yacht was launched in Malta by local agents Sailpower Limited at an event at the Grand Hotel Excelsior last Saturday. In order to appreciate the beauty of the yacht, the launch was held next to the hotel’s marina and guests had the opportunity to go aboard and appreciate the luxury and build quality present in this marvellous product. Mr Jurek Juszczyk, the Australian High Commissioner to Malta, speaking at the launch, said that Riviera is a prime example of Australia’s capacity to build high quality

products which require advanced research and development and fine craftsmanship. We had a few minutes to ourselves on the boat and could really see that this will be a serious contender to European yachts in similar categories. Even though we can’t comment on the performance and handling on the boat since we have not yet tested it at sea, we can assure you that few boats of this size can offer the space and luxury finish found here. We look forward to bringing you a full boat test on this twin Volvo Penta IPS 600 powered beauty in Boats & Yachting soon.

Cockpit: A well equipped and positioned helm. Note the Joystick on the right – IPS drives make manoeuvring child’s play.

Rear Deck: The saloon and the rear deck have very little in between effectively creating a large living area. The extra sink and fridge outside make life aboard more practical.

Saloon: Slide up flat screen TV with DVD and Ipod connection come as standard. Also note the very intelligent use of space for storage.

Royal Malta Yacht Club to moor at Ta’ Xbiex After many years of long drawn negotiations over premises at Fort Manoel, the Royal Malta Yacht Club has been handed the building previously used by the Malta Maritime Authority in Ta’ Xbiex. Work on the new premises should start as soon as all papers are signed and should be a more straight forward and less expensive venture than the previously planned new club house on Manoel Island.

MMA Yacht Marinas to be privatised by the end of the year Transport minister Austin Gatt announced that yacht marinas currently administered by the Malta Maritime Authority will be privatised during this year. The reason behind the privatisation is increased competition within the yacht marina sector and at the end of the day a better product for boat owners. The minister also mentioned that government would be considering the possibility of around 1,000 more berths to address the current shortage. Weather troubles the Gewiss Marzamemi Regatta Heavy Grigale winds on the way up to Sicliy and complete calm on the way back meant that only five out of a fleet of 57 boats crossed the finish line at sail. Most decided to turn to the engines, some throwing in a spot of fishing into the bargain. With a combination of newbies and hardened sailors, the heavier boats came out on top due to the weather conditions on the way up. Class Winners: IRC One- Elusive; IRC Two- Sprit of the Winds; IRC Cruiser class One: Windward; IRC Cruiser class Two - Serena; IRC Racing class – Geisha. Catamaran sinks after fire, skipper succumbs to injuries A catamaran caught fire in Marsamxett, after eyewitnesses heard an explosion on board as the yacht was sailing out. The fire spread quickly, fuelled by the catamaran’s fiberglass, with the yacht finally sinking in shallow water off Valletta waterpolo pitch in Marsamxett. The only person onboard, 58 year old Brian Felder jumped into the sea and was rescued by another catamaran. His rescuer, South African Daniel Beyers was reported as saying that Felder had severe burns and was clearly in pain even though conscious. Unfortunately Felder succumbed to his injuries 10 days later. The accident raised questions on Malta’s readiness for such emergencies at sea.

New York team victory for Leg 11 of Clipper 07-08 Breaking what has been referred to as the ‘home port curse’, skipper Duggie Gillespie and his team have achieved an historic victory by winning into New York at the end of the 1,420-mile race from Jamaica of the Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race on the 31st May. In what has been one of the closest races of the ten-month series, the New York team was able to hold its nerve and clinch victory in a nail biting finish that saw the top six teams finishing within eight nautical miles each other. The fleet will slip their berths in North Cove, New York at 08:00 local time on 4 June and perform a formation sail past the Statue of Liberty before heading out of the Hudson to start Race 12. RLR hold Hobie Cat Clinic with Jean Christophe Mourniac photography by Kurt Arrigo RLR Yachting, in collaboration with Hobie Cat Europe have recently held a three day Hobie 16 and Hobie Tiger clinic at the Adira Sailing Centre with world class Hobie Tiger sailor Jean Christophe Mourniac as coach. One of Jean Christophe’s recent achievements is winning the 2007

Archipelago Raid on his first attempt. The 600 nm race is held over six days and incorporates a number of different courses navigating between the 100,000 islands of the Archipelago region. Sailors attending the clinic went through both theoretical and practical sessions culmi-

nating with some exciting sailing in Ghadira Bay and around Comino, brought about by a strong Mistral wind giving way to some daring testing conditions where large swells, high winds and boat speeds in excess of 18 knots were experienced. The participating sailors were Joe Cross, Kevin Anastasi,

Darius Goodwin, Matthew Gusman, Christian Ripard, David Anastasi, Michael Anastasi, Paul Ellul, Mike Agius, Mark Schranz, Olympia Martinez, Alfred Manduca, Chris Grech and Frank Borg. The Hobie Tiger, now a recognised ISAF International Class has an active fleet racing on four continents. With over

1,000 units sold worldwide, Hobie Tiger has become one of the most exciting and fastest growing catamaran one-design racing fleets in the world. As a follow-up to this successful experience discussions are already ongoing regarding the possibility of future International F18 or Hobie Tiger events to be held in Malta.

Rough seas,

fast boats

and a whole load of excitement by Karl Cutajar The May Grand Prix was surely one to remember. The deteriorating sea conditions meant that drivers had to prove how skillful they were to get good results. With a swell coming into the bay and winds blowing up to force 4, the action was exhilarating. This event, held on Sunday 25th May, also saw the beginning of a new class of boats: Class 5, the class for boats equipped with a maximum of 115hp. A demonstration Thundercat race was also held right inside the bay. Effectively, now the MPA caters for all kinds of powerboat - with almost any size and horsepower. Ideas for the club are brought about by the drivers, members and any interested parties willing to participate making it a very open organisation, one that is willing to adapt to be as inclusive as possible. This is shown by the fact that the MPA now has 200 members enlisted and 25 teams currently participating in the National Championship. While not racing all the boats could be viewed clearly at

the Beachaven Complex, which was once again used for the wet pit area and race control. This fantastic event would not have been possible without all the help and support from the St.Paul’s Bay Local Council, all other local authorities involved and the members & volunteers who helped out on the day.

Malta-Sicily Kayak Challenge - strong support fleet to lead kayakers Seven kayaks and nine peddlers will be the centre of attraction on the daring 50-nautical miles Challenge making up the Malta-Sicily Kayak Challenge set for Friday 27th

June. Yet the real motive of all concerned will be the success of the fund raising campaign being held in association with this Event in aid of the Malta Cancer Foundation.

In fact the slogan chosen for the Event clearly indicates the motive behind the whole expedition – ‘Kayak For Cancer’ – a catchphrase bound to make this endurance test a tough yet

satisfying experience. Ever since the first SicilyMalta Windsurf Crossing in 1982 the determining factor in the success of such activities has been the support extended by local yachtsmen. Enthusiastically they give their time and make up their boats available to be part of the support fleet to provide escort and safety to the competitors concerned. Talking of the support fleet in the heydays of the popular Wishbone Malta-Sicily Windsurf Race one would find an HQ vessel, ten even thirteen escort vessels, VIP boat, medical boat, press boat/s, TV boat and stand-by/reserve boats. Yes, a whole armada of yachts, all powerboats where support was always extended for the fun of it. That’s the beauty of the spirit of the yachting community. In the Malta-Sicily Kayak Challenge there will be a support fleet of thirteen yachts. Their role during the crossing will be; one HQ vessel, seven escort yachts, one assigned to each peddler, one TV/Photography boat, three stand-by/ reserve boats, all twelve are sailing boats with a power-boat which will head for Pozzallo

prior to the crossing contingent to ensure that all is set at the Sicilian end with regards to berths, Capiteneria, etc. The yachts making up the support fleet are all sailing boats, except for one, due to the nature of the event – the crossing is bound to be a slow trip possibly taking some sixteen or eighteen hours. The crossing is set to start at three in the morning from Marsalforn Gozo which presents a shorter distance to Pozzallo, by some 3.4 nautical miles, rather than having a Marsmxett Harbour to Pozzallo run. Ready, Steady, Launch ... by Malcolm Ellul ACII, Mediterranean Insurance Brokers (MIB) Ltd. June. Sunday morning. Bugibba slipway. John is fifteen minutes away from launching his boat and waits haplessly as the other slipway users make haste to launch their own. He quickly goes through his checklist … picnic cooler, kids` flippers, towels, fishing rod, bait. Ok. He has it all. Down he goes and after a couple of minutes avoiding mooring ropes and tender boats, he is out in open sea and thrusts the throttle forward heading for Comino. He approaches St. Paul’s Islands at his usual 25 knots when suddenly, out of the blue, he is alerted by the sound of a policeboat siren as it signals him to slow down. His “Bongu Sir” goes by unheeded as three burly policeman come alongside and demand to see his papers and his safety equipment. He was subsequently booked for over speeding and for not having all the necessary equipment on board. Earlier in the week, Charles had been out fishing with a friend at il-Hofriet. No policemen there but a fishing line fouled their propeller prompting their engine to a full halt at the mercy of strong North Easterly currents. The rocky coastline was fast approaching and panic ensued. They had got out early without informing anyone and didn’t know who to call. You can enjoy your boat without compromising safety. John and Charles knew no better. Do you? Here are some tips on how to stay afloat this summer. Always inform relatives or friends of your itinerary and what time you expect to be back. Make sure you carry a fully-charged mobile phone and that they know your number and you know theirs. Ideally also befriend other boat owners and exchange contact numbers. You should also inform Valletta Port Control as to where you are heading and at

what time you are expecting to return. Always carry at least the following equipment on board: a strong tow row, a vhf radio, enough lifejackets for all persons on board (take care that children have the appropriate type of lifejackets as adult vests may be dangerous if they overturn), basic tools and spares, flares, a basic first-aid kit, an anchor with a generous length of rope or chain, fenders, a fire extinguisher, a fog horn, a powerful fully-charged torch, drinking water and a full spare fuel canister.

You are also expected to carry a copy of a valid insurance document, a copy of your renewed vessel license, a copy of your boat handling license (if your vessel is equipped with engines that in total exceed 100HP) and a list of useful telephone numbers. The latter may include Police (112), AFM Rescue (21809279), AFM Maritime Squadron (21238797), AFM Air Squadron (21244372), Civil Protection (21651028) and Valletta Port Control (21241363/4 or VHF channels 9 and 12). Before you plan your route check the weather forecast with particular attention to wind speed, direction and swell. Before you venture out in open seas, do check your boat for any signs of visible damage

and let the engine run for a few minutes to ensure that it is running well. Check that your fuel tanks carry enough fuel for the trip and for the return leg as well as for any contingencies on the way. Check your bilges to ensure that they are clean and free from water and ensure that any pumps are in working order. If you are not alone, make sure to brief your passengers on how to manoeuvre the vessel and how to switch off the engine and use the VHF radio in case you feel unwell or fall overboard. Never carry more weight than recommended by the boat manufacturer and make sure that you seat your passengers in an even way in order that you do not compromise stability. You are now out at sea. Always keep a look-out for flotsam (planks of wood, strands of rope, plastic bags) as well as for any buoys, divers, swimmers etc. Avoid engaging in conversation on a phone or VHF whilst making way. Do not consume excessive alcohol as this will impair your reflexes. Also protect yourself from strong sunlight by way of awnings, creams, hats and sunglasses. Keep speed within control and remember that you are only allowed a maximum of 10 knots within 200 metres of the foreshore and 300 metres of a sandy beach. When you are about to encroach the path of another vessel, remember that vessels coming from your starboard (right-hand side) have right of way. Also remember to give way to sailing yachts, large vessels and any vessel engaged in fishing as these have more restricted manoeuvrability. If you intend to stay out at night make sure that your boat is equipped with the necessary lights and that they are functional and that you know how and when to use them. The above guidelines are intended for coastal water cruising. For offshore cruising you will need a more comprehensive check-list including charts, GPS, life rafts, auxiliary engine etc. Fair winds to all.

Malta Canoe Federation receives Olympic Racing Kayaks A generous donation by the Hungarian Canoe Federation put smiles on all Malta Canoe Federation members last month as 14 racing kayaks arrived in Malta. As well as a total of 8 Olympic racing kayaks, 6 kayaks for children (including 10 paddles) and 2 moulds were also donated. These kayaks will most certainly be put to use amongst school children through the Development Programme which elite athlete Chris Camilleri of the local Federation is currently working on. In the immediate future the Olympic kayaks will be used by local athletes for both national and international competi-

tions. The new boats will add a dynamic competitive edge to this year’s sprint season which local sprinters Chris Camilleri and Matthew Schembri will certainly compete in. The first marathon racing kayak on the island will also be put to use by Nicki Borg Costanzi who is training for marathon racing. The Malta Canoe Federation would like to thank the Hungarian Canoe Federation as well as world class Hungarian coach Tibor Virag who is currently coaching local elite athlete Chris Camilleri. The Federation would also like to thank Chris Camilleri, Peter Borg Costanzi and Joe Borg as well as all those involved who made this acquisition possible.

Choosing

Marine Audio Gear by James Harrison There’s a wide variety of durable, high-quality marine audio equipment on the market these days. In addition to an array of receivers, speakers, subs, and amps, you’ll also find a number of marine-rated products . Marine audio gear is different from car audio products Unlike car audio components (which live in the watertight interior of your vehicle), marine equipment has to be able to stand up to the elements. The water, salt, and sun that make cruising around the waves so much fun can also wreak havoc on your electrical components. If your gear isn’t designed to withstand this sort of abuse, it won’t last a season. There are several types of weather protection typically found in marine audio gear: Water resistance — Can handle splashes and light rain, but not built to handle submersion. Levels of resistance vary by manufacturer. UV resistance — Designed to withstand sun damage. Found on receiver faceplates, speaker cones and grilles Waterproof — Able to

be fully submerged, though depths and the amount of time underwater vary by manufacturer. Anti-corrosion — Specifically designed to resist rust and the corrosive effects of salt water. Examples of anti-corrosive features include coated circuit boards, plated connections, and a rust-resistant chassis. Marine audio components Receivers — You’ll want to buy a radio with a coated circuit board, a water-resistant faceplate, line-level outputs for sending signals to an external amplifier, and satellite radio controls. A weatherproof faceplate cover and a watertight remote control are great accessories to add on. Speakers — Look for plastic cones (such as polypropylene) and rubber surrounds for maximum weather protection, corrosion-resistant mounting hardware, and enough power handling to pump out tunes over wind, water, and engine noise. Be sure to look at where you’re mounting your speakers — if your speakers are near your compass, they should be magnetically shielded.

Amplifiers — You’ll want coated circuit boards, plated, non-corrosive connectors, and plenty of power. Speaker wire and cables — All wires should be tinned; bare copper can corrode quickly in salt water conditions. Fit and placement of components on your boat Unlike most vehicles, there isn’t one ideal place to install audio equipment in a boat. Given the various power and space limitations, each installation presents a unique set of challenges. If you’re replacing an existing radio and speakers, you can probably use the existing mounting locations and wiring. Otherwise, you might need to cut some paneling or run wires for the components. Most marine receivers are a standard single-DIN size, and connect to a 12-volt marine battery. Amplifiers and subwoofers can go in a compartment under the seats, under the bow, or even on a wakeboard tower. Midrange and midbass speakers and tweeters can fit into side panels or under the dash. Grounding your electrical

Issue 04 • June 4th 2008

components can be a challenge in a boat. Some boats have specific grounding plates that can be used. Consult your manufacturer for more information on where to ground components in your boat. General considerations Finally, here are some other things to keep in mind when cruising for high-quality marine audio gear: Materials that will stand up to the elements — Nothing ruins a party like audio equipment that can’t handle the elements, so make sure that all of the electronics on your boat are protected against salt, sun, and water. If you need an extra measure of protection (or want

on

to use an unprotected component on your boat), install a universal cover. It will shield your receiver from the outside world, then flip up out of the way so you can get to the controls. A waterproof, wired remote control is an excellent alternative to exposing your receiver to the elements — you can mount the radio inside a watertight compartment and not worry about shorting out your tunes. Good specs — Better specs mean better sound quality, on land or at sea. For receivers, look for a high CD signal-tonoise ratio, a wide frequency response, and plenty of RMS power. If radio’s your thing, check the FM sensitivity spec

— the lower, the better. Speakers should fit nicely into your cabin panels, be made with UVresistant materials, and handle plenty of power. High power — Since you’ll be listening to your music out in the open (as opposed to within the acoustic confines of a car), plenty of power is a must for clean, clear sound. Aftermarket marine receivers come with built-in 4-way amplifiers, but if you love it loud or want to drown out the nautical background noise, you might want to consider adding an external amp to your system. Audio options — The days of the basic, one-trick CD receiver are long gone. From satellite radio controls to connections for your iPod, today’s aftermarket components offer of a wide variety of A/V entertainment options. If you have a larger system in mind, get a receiver with an auxiliary input, allowing you to add another audio source later. Multiple sets of preamp outputs make it easier to install component amplifiers and subwoofers. And if your cruising will take you out into the wild blue, consider the entertainment value of satellite radio — satellite radio signals can reach up to 200 miles off shore. Beneteau Oceanis 57 in Malta

B&Y got to know from the local agents of Beneteau – Mediterranean Yacht Sales – that they have just delivered a brand new Beneteau Oceanis 57 to Malta. We were taken on a short visit to the boat before it was handed over to the client and were duly impressed. It is surely the most luxurious production sailing boat we have been on in Malta – the finishing is in a completely different class to normal production boats and the space inside is comparable to a hotel. We’re doing our best to get a Test Sail on the boat, and we promise to publish it as soon as we manage.

won Bell Lawrie Scottish Series 2008 Tarbert Loch Fyne, Scotland: The Bell Lawrie Scottish Series top award, the Scottish Series Trophy, has gone to France for the first time as Gery Trentesaux and his crew on the new Philippe Briand designed First 45, Lady Courrier, topped the 14 boat IRC Class 1 at the annual four day regatta on Loch Fyne which attracted 170 entries. In conditions which could scarcely have been bettered, 12-20 knots of South Easterly breeze which flecked the dark nay waters with white horses, and relentless sunshine, Lady Courrier may have come of second best to David Dwyer’s Crosshaven, Cork based Marinerscove.ie in both windward-

leeward races today, but the Lille entrepreneur and his 12 strong crew, which included his student son Nicholas, posted a final scoreline of five first places and two second places. The depth of competition in the IRC Class 1 fleet was emphasised as he lead no fewer than four past winners of this prestigious trophy including Cork’s double winner Anthony O’Leary in third on the new Ker 39 Antix Eile, Cork’s 2007 winner Conor Phelan in fourth on the Ker 37 Jump Juice, the Clyde’s three times winner Jonathan Anderson in fifth on his First 47.7 Playing FTSE, and 1990 winner Geoffrey Howison with the BH41 Local Hero XXI in sixth.

With four Transatlantic races and three Tour Voile round France races to his credit as well as twice winning the English based international team regatta the Commodore’s Cup, and placing third overall in last year’s classic Fastnet Race, Trentesaux and his La Trinité based crew set themselves several targets this year. So far they have won their home Spi Ouest regatta, and, today the Bell Lawrie Scottish Series before heading to the UK IRC National Championships, next month’s Commodore’s Cup before a December date with their first Sydney Hobart race. Trentesaux has raced with his own boats here in 2000 and 2002. Second time here he and

his crew would have won Class 1 but for an unfortunate error when they took an invited guest sailing which took them over their prescribed crew

limit. He has raced six times here, often with his long time Scottish friend Grant Gordon. Full results at www.clyde.org/ www2/ss08_home.shtml

POWERBOAT P1

IN MALTA FROM THE 6TH TO THE 8TH JUNE

“Fastest man on water”

SCHEDULE 5th and 6th rounds of the UIM Powerboat P1 World Championship 2008 for Evolution and SuperSport class boats. Powerboat P1 Management Limited reserves the right to alter the schedule at any time.

to race for Cigarette Racing Team in Malta Legendary powerboat throttleman John Tomlinson has confirmed he will race with the Italian Cigarette Racing Team in the Powerboat P1 Malta Grand Prix of the Sea, taking place in Valletta Grand Harbour on June 6-8th. Winner of 35 USA and world titles, John has broken 10 water speed records and even graced the Hollywood screen, with a stunt role in the 2006 blockbuster Miami Vice. Taking over from longstanding friend, Cigarette’s current throttleman Lino Di Biase, John will be on the throttles of the Mercury Engines aboard Cigarette EVO-01P1 in a bid to win the Powerboat P1 2008 World Championship title. Robert Wicks, Powerboat P1’s commercial director, said: “John is a multiple world champion and his association with P1 speaks volumes for the credibility of this series. He has raced at the highest level and I believe he will add significant value to the Cigarette team over the remaining races of the 2008 season.” In 2006, John attempted a speed record while racing the Cigarette Kilo in Florida, pushing the 46ft boat to speeds in excess of 170mph. This spring, he also took part in testing of the team’s new race boat, ahead of the opening race of the series in May. After successfully driving the EVO-01P1 alongside Luca Formilli Fendi for the first two Grands Prix of the season, Lino Di Biase will assume the role of technical manager.

DRY PIT

British-based Powerboat P1 SuperSport class outfit Team Sunseeker are aiming to have their #11 Sunseeker Challenger boat back on the water in time for the Tunisian Grand Prix of the Sea in Hammamet on July 11-13. The team was forced to miss the Grand Prix de Marseille and the Malta Grand Prix after the #11 Sunseeker Challenger flipped and sunk during pre-event testing. The boat has now been recovered and returned to Sunseeker’s base in Poole in the UK for repairs. “We have a challenge ahead of us but with the quality and character within the Sunseeker organization, and with the support of our partners, we are determined to bounce back and be up there at the front of the field as soon as possible,” Dominic Byrne, Managing Director of Sunseeker Sales Group said. Pilot Andy Wilby, who remained in the boat as throttleman Pete Little was thrown clear, has talked more of the accident and how it happened. “The water was choppy and as I turned-in we picked up off a wave,” explains Wilby. “Normally that’s not a problem, but as we were in the air a gust of wind caught us and turned the boat at an angle. It skipped off the wave a couple of times, but then dug in and flipped.” “I was still holding on to the wheel, trying to steer. It was like being in a washing machine until I was just ripped out of the boat. It all happened so quickly there was no time to think or panic. Afterwards I realised how lucky I was - how lucky we both were. We’re sore and have cuts and bruises, but it could have been a lot worse. It was only when I got out of the water that I noticed one leg of my race suit had been torn off. Our helmets did their job and the treatment we received was brilliant.”

British boats conquer

Italian Grand Prix of the Sea

Pulses raced during an action packed weekend of world championship powerboating with the sun drenched resort of San Benedetto del Tronto providing perfect race conditions for the opening two rounds in the 2008 Powerboat P1 season. With 22 teams competing for the prestigious UIM Powerboat P1 World Championship title, the British proved their prowess with VoomVoom.com and Fountain Worldwide racing to victory to take the overall Italian Grand Prix of the Sea title in the SuperSport and Evolution Classes The Italian Grand Prix also marked the first ever podium place for a woman in the Evolution class, with Lucas Oil’s Southampton born pilot Shelley Jory finishing second in Saturday’s round and third in Sunday’s race. “It’s been an incredible weekend and I’m absolutely thrilled to become not only the first woman to race in the P1 Evolution class but to finish on the podium in my very first outing of the season. I was apprehensive about taking the jump from previous racing experience with a smaller boat but the team really gelled and it all came together,” said Shelley. VoomVoom.com throttleman Gareth Williams also celebrated his debut with a victory. “We have a superb team behind us and would not be on the water without them; the boat ran beautifully.”

Conam Yachts triumph in Marseille The #99 Fountain 1st4boats. com crew of James Sheppard and Craig Wilson took a dominant win in Saturday’s Evolution class Sprint race of the Grand Prix de Marseille, heading home the #88 Kiton Outerlimits OSG Racing boat and the #10 Fantastic 1 Cigarette Racing Team in a dramatic event that had thrills and spills aplenty. The race got off to a controversial start before the boats even reached the first turn as the #99 Fountain boat and the #69 Honeyparty.com had a close shave that left the #69 Honeyparty.com boat limping back to harbour with severe hull damage. In the ensuing confusion, the majority of boats managed to miss the first buoy, allowing the #99 Fountain boat to make a clean escape before building a 20-second lead. Fountain’s luck held on Sunday when they sprinted with the shortened Endurance course. Their weekend haul of 200 points earned the two Britons the overall Powerboat P1 Grand Prix of the Sea victory on a wet Mediterranean Sunday. In the SuperSport race,

the reigning champion #44 Conam Yachts crew continued their dominance. The pairing of Angelo Tedeschi and Aaron Ciantar led home the #59 Saho Offshore Rana’s boat and the #08 Phoenix TV team, with a lead of almost three-minutes at the chequered flag. The battle for second place was initially an incredibly close-fought scrap between the #47 Silverline Buzzi Bullet and #07 VoomVoom.com crews, but both boats ground to a halt midway through the race with technical problems, severely hampering their bid to stay ahead of the #44 Conam Yachts crew at the top of the points table. “The water conditions were very bad, but we applied our strategy to make a good start,”

said Ciantar. “This advantage gave us the possibility to manage our position to the middle of the course. The conditions kept changing with the wind, but it was okay for the victory.” The #44 Conam Yachts team continued their impressive start on Sunday, dominating the shortened Endurance race of the Grand Prix de Marseille to complete a weekend double victory and secure overall Grand Prix of the Sea victory. Originally Conam Yachts held a huge 100 point lead over second placed Voomvoom.com, however their lead was axed to just 40 points following three 20 point penalties for sensor irregularities. Phoenix TV, Big Sergio, Spirit of Portomaso and Saho were also handed penalties for the same reason.

ICAP Leopard is off on its

transatlantic challenge

Crew:

At 00:01 GMT on Thursday 27th May, ICAP Leopard, the Farr designed 100 foot super maxi yacht owned by Mike Slade, officially began her transatlantic speed record attempt from Ambrose Light, off New York. In order to beat the current record of eight days, three hours and 29 minutes set by 246 foot yacht Phocea in July 1988, she will need to cross the finish line at Lizard Point Lighthouse before 03:30 GMT today Wednesday 4th June. Having smashed the Rolex Fastnet Race record by eight hours in August last year, ICAP Leopard has already proven herself to be one of the fastest yachts on the circuit. Sailing with a crew of 12, ICAP Leopard could shave several

hours off the current 2,925 nautical mile World Speed Sailing Records Council (WSSRC) monohull record for a yacht with power-assisted winches. Chris Sherlock, Boat Captain aboard ICAP Leopard, commented: “We got off to a fairly quick start from Ambrose Light, passing it just after midnight (UTC), doing around 27 knots. It has been a very fast, wet and windy first 12 hours. We are all settling into our watch system, trying to eat the required amount of freeze dried food to refuel and then rest before getting drenched for another four hour stint on deck with the boat speed anywhere between 20 and 30 knots. Due to ICAP Leopard’s busy schedule, she was only graced

with a five day weather window in which to begin the record attempt. Whilst owner Mike Slade is confident that ICAP Leopard can break the record, the crew will be hoping that the window they have chosen will provide them with consistent wind until the finish. Sherlock continued: “The forecast for the next few days is for more of the same and from then on we are in the hands of the weather gods to get through a ridge with not a great deal of wind in it. We are hoping things will change by the time we get there.” The crew for this record attempt includes some the world’s top offshore sailors. Long-standing boat captain Chris Sherlock is joined by a whole host of ICAP Leopard

regulars, including America’s Cup sailor Paul Standbridge, and between them they have an impressive history in world class sailing. Many of the crew were onboard ICAP Leopard when she broke the Rolex Fastnet Record last year and they know how to get the best performance out of her. Mike Slade, Chief Executive of London based property company Helical Bar plc commented: “The transatlantic record is one of the ‘holy grails’ of yachting and something that all offshore sailors dream of holding. As always it has been difficult finding a suitable weather window in which to begin the record attempt. However we will give it our best shot and with the right conditions we are confident we could

She will then compete in several European events over the Summer. To follow ICAP Leopard’s progress, visit the online tracker at: www.leopard3.com

Dehler

succeed in first regattas of the season Since 1963, Dehler has put a strong emphasis on the sporting nature of every boat wearing the Dehler name. For forty-five years, these truly dual-purpose yachts have taken home the silver while delivering and housing their crews in comfort and high style. From the IOR, through IMS and ORC, and now IRC, the game has evolved, but one element has always and will always be consistent: a throughly designed and engineered boat will sail well under any rule. Dehler's been doing it this way from Day One. Below is a roundup of notable Dehler wins during the last few months: Dehler 44, Eclectic, 1st Place IRC-1, ABN Amro North Sea Regatta (Netherlands) The North Sea Regatta is high on the list of must-do events, combining a series of roundthe-cans and distance racing. This year, 391 entrants filled out 24 classes, sailing for four days on five courses along the Scheveningen (NED) coast. The IRC-1 division was particularly well-rounded, putting 22 boats on the line for a series of ten races. Of the ten, Eclec• January tic Issue came 01 home with fi2008 ve bullets, and a decisive first-place for the series. Owner Koen Lockefeer summed it up well: "The level of

competition is that high, that it is impossible to come and win. Tuning is the answer and you have to get used to the boat. I am in one word HAPPY!" Kudos Koen and the whole Eclectic crew. Dehler 44, Selene, 1st Place ORC, Dei Golfi Regatta (Italy) Although the Dehler 44 is a modern, IRC-optimized design, she clearly performs well under ORC, as Selena proved at this famous regatta, held in April 2008. Dehler 44, Vision Futur, 1st Place, La Croisiere Bleu (France) Meanwhile, in France, La Croisiere Blue comprised two distance races held over two days. The 260-boat fleet sailed from Antibes to Corsica, held what was no doubt a memorable party, and sailed back to Antibes. Light and fluky conditions were the name of the game for the weekend, leading to a number of dropouts, and in the end it was the metallic grey Dehler 44 that prevailed. Dehler 36SQ, Rosetta from the Rocks, 1st Place IRC-2, ABN Amro North Sea Regatta (Netherlands) Meanwhile, back at the North Sea Regatta, the always-formidable Rosetta from the Rocks, owned by Radboud Crul, won the ten-boat IRC-2 division. Dehler 36SQ, Dehler West,

1st Place, NRW Cup (Netherlands) The Dehler 36SQ has long been recognized as a very quick boat, faster in some conditions than her larger sister, the 39SQ. German Dehler rep Thorsten Rodder drove the point home, winning his second consecutive NRW Cup with his Dehler 36SQ, Dehler West. Dehler 34RS, Rushlex, 1st Place IRC-3, Raymarine Warsash Spring Series (United Kingdom) This year's running of the Warsash Spring Series appeared challenging, offering winds from less than one knot up to 35 over five of six scheduled races. The brand-new Dehler 34, launched in September 2007, appears to be up to the task, and it was Russell Hodgson's well-sailed Rushlex that fended-off 32 competitors to take a well-earned first in IRC-3.

Scanstrut

Launches New Additions to Best Selling Range Adding to their very successful self-levelling range, Scanstrut are now introducing two new pole mounted Self Levelling Radar Mounts. Utilising the existing SC100 Pole System, the first product features a head unit which slots into the top of the pole and supports the levelling mechanism. The mount is 2.5m / 8’4” in height and features an adjustable base allowing installation onto angled decks, narrow swimming steps and steeply sloping transoms. The kit is also supplied with two support modules, a deck strut and rail stand off, to provide maximum fore / aft and sideways support. A variation of this product allows a dual installation of both radar and 30cm sat-

com/tv antenna on the pole, with the Self Levelling Mast Mount fitted to the pole and a top platform supporting the satcom/tv dome above the radar to ensure the best performance from both applications. In this format, the kit is supplied with two deck struts for additional support. Head of Sales at Scanstrut, Carine Cooper comments “The Self-Levelling Pole Mount is an exciting addition to our already popular self-levelling range. Not only does it offer even more installation options but the Dual option also provides an innovative double radar and satcom/tv mounting solution for sailboats”. Scanstrut products are available from RLR Marine.

Mecca

introduce BWA Evolution 27

Mecca Marine of San Pawl are introducing the latest RIB in the BWA Evolution range, the Evolution 27. Measuring

7.89m the Evolution 27 carries up to 20 persons and can take outboard engines ranging from 140hp to 300hp. BWA’s

signature combination of Hypalon and Neoprene ensures resistance to UV rays, fire, abrasion and hydrocarbons.

New GILL Headwear protects sailors from the sun The latest additions to the Gill range of Technical Apparel are two high UV-protection hats. The Gill Technical Sailing Cap is a low profile cap specifically designed forIssue sailing motorboat01 •and January 2008 ing. Providing an ultraviolet protection factor of 50+, the cap considerably reduces the effect of dangerous UVB light to the scalp, forehead and eyes. It is a close-fitting design with an elasticated Velcro adjustment to keep the hat secure – but, just in case, there is also a loop for fitting

a retainer cord. For extra protection, the Gill Technical Sailing Sun Hat, which also has a UPF of over 50, is great for keeping the sun out of the eyes and off the neck. As with the cap, the Wide Brimmed Hat also has a loop for a retainer cord to prevent hats going overboard. Both hats have a water resistant finish and are quick drying, breathable and fast wicking to prevent the head from becoming clammy. Gauci Borda are local agents for Gill.

Soft equipment holders protect expensive gear Portable electronics such as PDA’s and cell phones require safe storage on board. On small boats a cell phone may be the only distress signal available. With that in mind, Beckson Marine offers its Soft-Mate radio holders to keep handheld radios and cell phones in a convenient spot. Easy to install, they are available in two sizes. Constructed of soft, flexible PVC, these radio holders won’t hurt the user or the equip-

ment. The larger HH-8 unit measures 15.2cm H x 7.6cm W x 5.1cm D. It’s ideal for large handheld radios, GPS devices and scanners. The HH-81 mini unit is great for storing smaller handheld radios, cell phones, eyeglass cases, pens, pencils and calculators. The mini measures 12.1cm H x 7cm W x 5.1cm D. Both models are available in black and white. www.beckson.com.

Issue 04 • June 4th 2008

in 24-hr, 161Km challenge Issue 01 • January 2008

Dr. Nick Hall’s idea was ambitious, to say the least. The adventurer planned to travel 161 km from Key West to Key Largo, Florida, USA in his Hobie kayak, Pelican. All within 24 hours. As he set off, pedaling and paddling the 4.9 m Adventure Island, he encountered strong currents and headwinds. These obstacles could have set him back by hours, but a revolutionary new motor saved the day. Hall is just the latest convert to the highly efficient and powerful Travel 801 electric outboard by Torqeedo. No stranger to challenges, Hall has served as a US government intelligence operative and led a National Geographic-sponsored expedition to study whales in the West Indies. He is perhaps betterknown as an award-winning medical scientist and professional motivational speaker. Hall specializes in groundbreaking studies linking the mind and body. At first, Hall questioned using the Torqeedo for his challenge. “Kayaks are tippy boats,” he said. “I was afraid the 11 kg motor would throw me off balance and interfere with navigation. But tipping the motor transferred most of the weight close to the hull, so I barely knew it was there. If it had been a problem, I could have removed the battery and reduced the weight by a third.” Leaving mid-morning from Key West on 17 February,

2008, the Torqeedo Travel immediately proved invaluable. “I would have wasted a lot of time and energy paddling through the narrow, zig-zag channels,” he said. At max torque, Hall averaged 8.9 kph despite the chop and headwinds, halving the time it might otherwise have taken to get underway. Aside from power comparable to a 2 hp petrol engine, Torqeedo has much to recommend it. It’s easy to install—”Nothing to it,” Hall said, adding that there were no maintenance issues. “The Torqeedo Travel is truly unique. There’s nothing to attach—no large battery or wires, no exposed terminals, no fuss.” Hall was impressed by the Travel’s long-lasting rechargeable battery. “At max range—1.6 to 4 kph—I ran it intermittently for 4-5 hours,” he said. Engine noise was almost imperceptible, “and virtually silent at low speeds.” With no fuel or emissions, the Travel is kind to the environment. Hall, also a former pro-

fessional alligator wrestler, recommends the Torqeedo Travel as a great option for less adventurous people. “This versatile motor makes humanpowered boats and kayaks a choice for those who enjoy the exercise or those who want to fish and cruise quietly. “The Travel contributes to safety, providing backup power if injured or fatigued,” as when Hall paddled and pedaled a sleepless 30 hours in the US WaterTribe Everglades Challenge. The journey was particularly difficult because Hall’s paddling time is limited by arthritis in his hand caused by an alligator bite. “I wish I had the Torqeedo option during that long night of beating into a strong headwind.” “It would also be a tremendous asset in rivers,” he added, “something I hope to demonstrate on the Florida Greenway Canoe Trail.” To complete the 2575-km circumnavigation of the state, Hall will carry spare batteries so he doesn’t have to stop when he’s enjoying a fine day on the water.

ARTEMIS TRANSAT 2008

Left: Yann Eliès (3rd) Loick Peyron (1st) and Armel Le Cleac’h (2nd) - The Artemis Transat 2008.

Historic third victory for Loick Peyron The start for the 2008 Artemis Transat was given by 2004 winner Mark Golding, with more than 1000 boats watching the spectacle. Heading out under a light variable breeze, the wind soon shifted to gusts of up to 30 knots on Day 3, creating drama and danger for the competitors. Marc Guillemot was the first race casualty when he crash gybed and suffered a suspected broken rib. Although in pain, Marc still managed to finish. With a tight pack for the first part of the race Sébastien Josse makes the first break and creates the largest gap since the start of the race on Day 5. The end of the day brings shocking news, race favourite Michel Desjoyeaux announcing he throws in the towel after having collided with a whale. On Day 8 there is more shocking news as race leader Sébastien Josse is forced to retire plagued by a broken

mainsail headcar, and unable to climb up the mast given the wet, cold, upwind, foggy conditions. With this happening in the middle of a 36 hour positions blackout, this is prime time for an attack on the leadership, with Loick Peyron’s tack being the most obvious. Now repositioned further south, Peyron is second only 26 miles behind Riou (leading), and has a 30-mile advantage over Armel Le Cléac’h’s Brit Air, who moved into third position aver the blackout. Riou’s lead does not last as he is forced to abandon ship on Day 10 due to major keel damage, following a collision with a shark! Loick Peyron rescues Riou, taking him aboard Gitana Eighty, the current leader. The jury eventually grants Loick Peyron 2h30 to compensate for the time and route loss induced by Riou’s rescue. Peyron’s lead continued and on Day 14, having transferred

Vincent Riou onto the race committee boat, Loick Peyron sailed Gitana Eighty across the finish line of The Artemis Transat in Boston and the Omega clock stopped counting at precisely 03:15:35 GMT on Saturday, 24th May, claiming a third victory in the event as well as a new race record for this legendary sailor. Finishing 7 hours and 43 minutes later (taking into account Loick Peyron’s 2.5 hour time allowance), Armel Le Cléac’h aboard Brit Air brilliantly captured second place, proving he’s definitely a force to be reckoned with. “It takes a beautiful second to make a great winner,” once said a certain Mr Peyron at the end of a grueling multihull roundthe-world race in 2001, and he certainly would approve of us using that phrase in order to comment on Armel Le Cléac’h’s finish. Plagued by an almost complete lack of wind, Yann

Elies onboard Generali eventually crossed the finish line at 04:00:22 GMT (0:00:22 local time) on Day 15, clenching the last podium position. Nine out of 13 starters managed to complete the race with Steve White onboard Spirit of

Weymouth crossing the Boston finish line of The Artemis Transat at 04:04:54 GMT (midnight local time) in 9th place in a time of 16 days, 15 hours, 4 minutes and 54 seconds, completing the IMOCA results table.
