Mythical Beatles track soon to be released? Paul McCartney has revealed that ‘Carnival of Light’ – a quasi-mythical 14 minute song by the Beatles – does exist and the time is ripe for its release. Recorded back in 1967, the experimental track never saw the light of day as the band thought it was too weird for the time. McCartney said that 41 years later, it may no longer be the case. “The time has come for it to get its moment,” McCartney told the BBC. “I like it because it’s The Beatles free, going off piste. I said all I want you to do is just wander around all the stuff, bang it, shout, play it, it doesn’t need to make any sense. “Hit a drum then wander on to the piano, hit a few notes, just wander around. So that’s what we did and then put a bit of an echo on it. It’s very free.” The release is subject to agreement by Ringo Starr and John Lennon’s and George Harrison’s estates, which is far from a given as the band had already vetoed against McCartney’s wish to include the track in the Beatles Anthology. If it is released any time soon, ‘Carnival of Light’ is likely to become the first track by the Beatles to be available for legal on-line download.
Aniston slams Jolie in bruising interview Jennifer Aniston’s declarations against Angelina Jolie, the “uncool” husband thief, have Brad Pitt hot under the collar. Brad’s “totally thrown” that Jennifer hasn’t been able to move on said a source close to Brad in reaction to Aniston’s Vogue interview, where she lashed-out against Jolie. “There was stuff printed there that was definitely from a time when I was unaware that it was happening,” Aniston had said to Vogue. “I felt those details were a little inappropriate to discuss. That stuff about how she couldn’t wait to get to work every day? That was really uncool.” The whole saga had started back in a 2004, in a New York Times interview where Jolie had declared she fellin love with Brad at the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Jolie’s indecorous ‘joy of going to work’ comments came some time later in another Vogue interview. When asked if she still speaks to Pitt, Aniston said that they exchange “a few very kind hellos ... and congratulations on your babies.” Then Jolie or one of the six children butts in, we would imagine.
Britney trounces Coldplay in Euro Music Awards The MTV Euro music awards voted Britney Spears’ ‘Blackout’ as album of the year, leaving favourites Coldplay empty handed. Spears also won the award for ‘Best act in 2008’, in a night which highlighted MTV’s allegiance to teen pop sensations. Set in Liverpool’s Echo Arena, the night kicked off with a performance by Kate Perry, who later scooped up the award for ‘Best new act’. Pink – who scooped the ‘Most addictive track award’ with ‘So What’ – also performed during the event, as did Beyonce (cough Sasha Fierce). Rick Astley – of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ fame – provided the comic moment of the night as, in absentia, he won the award for ‘Best Act Ever’. Yes ever. The bizarre online poll decision was fuelled by a year old on-line viral campaign in which an estimated 25million people were tricked, through fake internet links, into watching the video for ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. German teen rockers Tokio Hotel won the ‘Best live band’ award, beating the likes of Metalica and the Cure. Amidst the teen phantasmagoria, there was also a lifetime achievement award for Paul McCartney, who, in spite of being in his home-town, must have felt a touch out of place.
Pixar’s new project is ‘Up’
Jack White said that, as soon as he’s up and running from his slip disk, he’ll team with the ‘Incredible Sulk’ himself Thom Yorke. “We’ve known ourselves for a long time,” said White. “Nevertheless, the doctors have indicated me rest by two months. In return, I have been able to write much material.” No one knows what to make of the move after the less than successful Alicia Keys James Bond effort. But in his defense – as Loretta Lynn, the Raconteurs or the Electric Six could testify – White has has a knack of getting the best out of his mates.
Bruce Springsteen confirms new album Bruce Springsteen has declared he will come back early next year with his 16th studio album. The January release of ‘Working on a Dream’ was confirmed, with excerpts from the title track previewed during the half time segment of NBC’s coverage of the American football game between the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys. ‘The boss’ will play some of the new tracks live on Feb. 1, as part of the Super Bowl XLIII half time show in Tampa, said music site Billboard.
Pixar’s latest major studio project is ‘Up’ – a comic adventure about a 78-year-old explorer. It’s time for that, right?” The pop star has already acted in Austin Powers Goldmember and The Pink Panther, but the comic hero role is bound to be a different experience. “After doing these roles that were so emotional I was thinking to myself: ‘OK, I need to be a superhero,’” Beyonce said. “Although, when you think about the psychology of the heroes in the films these days, they are still a lot of work, of course, and emotion. But there’s also an action element that I would enjoy.”
Winehouse working on new album She’s battling the heroin and cocaine demons, struggling with a recurring chest infection and dealing with unflinching media attention. But Amy Winehouse has also been working on a number of demos which will form the blue-print for her third studio album. News is in that Winehouse is taking her time tinkering with the fresh material in the studio and, according to her manager Lucian Grange, the first indications are very positive. “I’ve heard some demos and I’ve heard some simple acoustic songs that she’s played me in my office on acoustic guitar, and what I’ve heard has been sensational,” he said to BBC 6Music. According to internet reports, she has also set her heart on learning the drums, and she’s spending time sketching and drawing in peace. Hopefully, it won’t be long before she’s back making the headlines for her art and music, rather than lifestyle.

NCH U A L M U B L A MB A REAL BO Two years are a long time in the music scene but – of those who had attended – few could have forgotten the Brikkuni performances of yore. Granted, a bare-chested (frontman) Mario Vella is a tough image to exorcise but, it was the music and powerful rendition which people raved about for months on end. For this album launch, the Brikkuni line-up changed substantially but this did not dampen expectations. By calling themselves “the most erratic, shambolic yet visionary of local bands past, present and future,” the band added more fuel to the fire. A bad showing would have had the crowd calling for their heads. But from the word-go, it was easy to see what the fuss is about. Mario – heavy beard, rotund shape, grating voice and all – has a stage presence unlike any other. Whether he’s singing about Mgarr lesbians, Eileen Montesin or shit art installations, he’s flippant and menacing – seemingly just a whisper away from throwing a tantrum. Under the new line-up, the Brikkuni sound has matured to a rich palette. Whether it’s Micheal Galea’s RingoStaresque drumming, Dajneli’s keyboard creativity, Matthew’s shimmering guitar, or Flambo’s spot on bass, it’s quality all around from faces much familiar to the Alternative scene. And what’s to say about the support musicians? It’s their sterling works which brings something like Willie Vassallo – a
self confessed Sergio Leone soundtrack rip-off – to life. Brikkuni thrive on momentum. Track by track, they sounded sharper, and gradually, they worked the often laconic indie crowd to their hands. When approaching the finale, an unexpected twist took some of the wind out of their sails. The band had their instruments unplugged and a voice instructed everyone to leave the establishment. Bomb Scare! The band’s reaction was largely unprintable but in no time, the crowd was sipping beer in the parking lot, while a policeman ‘searched’ the establishment lit-cigarette in mouth. It was a mild annoyance at worst, but the whole cermony could have easily upset their rhythm. Much to their credit, Brikkuni stormed back with a memorable second half performance that included four encores that worked the crowd to a frenzy. “Dan biex nurukom li ahna l-ahjar band li qatt imxiet fuq wicc Malta,” said Mario at one point towards the end. His tone and expression revealed that it was a tongue firmly in cheek comment, only just there and then, one could have even believed him. It’s just that one performance every two years is not enough to judge by is it?
YELL FOR L-ISTRINA. This year’s edition will hit us on the December 27 2008 and should be a one of a kind event. L-Istrina provides indispensable support to countless Philantropic institutions among which are the Malta Community Chest fund, The Malta Hospice Movement, Oasi Centre, Casa Leone and several others that assist many suffering from dilabittating illnesses, drug abuse and social ailments, seeing them and their families through the hardest of times. The organisers propose to offer ‘L-Istrina with a difference’ and to this end a number of activities involving personalities from all walks of life are being prepared. Competition and spectacle will be the order of the day at this years L-Istrina together with record breaking attempts in various fields.
On December 13, a parade of all sorts will strike Valletta. Anyone and everyone is invited. The parade along with street theatre and various human statues through the streets of Valletta will launch the supporting auction and raise awareness on L-Istrina` s cause. It is vital that we all understand that behind all the fun and games is a real opportunity to help those in need. Beyond mundane concerns such as bill-paying and gift-buying, making a small, one time donation is perfectly in tune with the spirit that nourishes Christmas.

collaging is excellent and the result is a lean and memorable piece of high octane live music. As for special features, there’s a rather vapid documentary commentary by Tiga and a quite good 11 minute mini-documentary about the live show. However, the best ‘bonus’ is the accompanying audio CD of a live show – pure headphone hedonism. The ‘Part of the Weekend Never Dies’ DVD just works. It’s interesting, eye catching and captures one of the hardest working bands in the business. Without doubt the closest thing to experiencing Soulwax live in flesh.
NOMY T METRON IGHTS OU 2008
Soulwax took me completely by surprise. Who would have guessed that the guitar pop band from Ghent would change the face of dance twice-over? They were the ones to pioneer the mash up genre under the 2 Many Dj’s guise. Later, by remixing and re-recording their 2004 album ‘Any Minute Now’, they bridged indie to dance under the name Nite Versions. Add that to their live show Radio Soulwax – which includes Soulwax, 2 many dj’s, Nite Versions and touring mates – and you have a very confusing heap of side projects. This DVD does a great job of making sense of it all. For starters, it clears the whole Radio Soulwax - Nite Versions polemics by showing a cohesive portrait of the whole Radio Soulwax show. Not only that – there’s also a documentary which focuses on Soulwax and the way they cope with the rock and roll lifestyle. In theory this sounds like a disaster – I mean Soulwax aren’t exactly the most exciting band in the universe. Let’s face it, the possibility of descending into the drugs, girls and sweaty guys waving their arms cliché is high. Thankfully, despite the obligatory share of drugged girls and sweaty guys, the documentary includes loads of fantastic interviews with people who give fresh insights in the band. It is also beautifully filmed. I have a soft spot for eyecatching scenes and there are plenty of those here. Director Saam Farahmand does a wonderful editing job, capturing every perfect moment, from live performances to interviews. The second part of the DVD consists of a 55 minute performance of Nite Versions, edited from 120 shows. The

It seems that every time critics declare that nu-rave is dead, an album pops up to redefine the genre. The first time this happened was in March, when Australian duo Cut/Copy improved on a generic debut and released a first class second album. History is repeating itself with Metronomy’s sophomore release – an unexpected knockout. In 2006, Joseph Mount (aka Metronomy) released his debut Pip Paine. It was good, not great and I listened to it a few times, and even danced to a couple of tracks. It didn’t stick. Now comes this – an album which brought Metronomy two new recruits for an expanded sound which, for the first time, includes vocals. The album impresses through its digressing nature, as it’s chock full of little tricks which throw the listener off course. The first prank starts the second you press play. Mount begins with mournful, rubbery sounding horns which dominate for a good few minutes, until the horns start to disappear, to be replaced by keyboards and synths which weave themselves in before bowing out to a flurry of harmonicas and ska-ish beats. It’s six minutes long and stretched over two tracks. Not only did ‘Nights Out’ start with one fake misleading introduction, but it’s merged with another wayward one. The album proper begins with single ‘Radio Ladio’ which sets the tone for the rest of the record – a mash of looping bass-lines, stinky synthesizers and deadpan vocals. On the surface it seems simple but beneath, there’s a very complex sound, infused with melodies from dozens of instruments which have their place in the mix. Like Simian Mobile Disco’s debut, ‘Nights Out’ is a flexible album which can be enjoyed anywhere. ‘Hearbreaker’ or ‘Holiday’ will work on a club night, but even in the comfort of the living room sofa. The music is anything but predictable, but it’s tuneful, easily absorbed and appreciable in a couple of spins. By the time the albums ends, the band throws the last curveball with closing track ‘Nights’, which is performed entirely on an acoustic guitar. It is the ultimate comedown track to a record dominated by electronic sounds. It’s not the best track on the album but it works beautifully. It’s very rare for an artist to follow-up a good debut with an even better sophomore, but Metronomy have pulled it off. In the future ‘Nights Out’ will be looked very highly upon.

TV ON THE RADIO DEAR SCIENCE (2008) RECORD LABEL: 4AD
By now you’ve probably read all the reviews, blogs, quotes and everything else about TV on the Radio’s third release. And yes, ‘Dear Science’ IS a fantastic album and their best record to date. If TV on the Radio have been showing potential ever since the monumental 2003 ‘Young Liars’ e.p., now they’ve fulfilled every ounce of it. But why is everyone turning into a dribbling monster at the mere mention of this album? What is the magic secret? Has the band created an even grander wall of sound that the one on ‘Return to Cookie Mountain’? Have they gone techno? What is it? What makes Dear Science so appealing is that producer and band member Dave Sitek whittled the sound back to basics. No more hazy back drops or distorted instruments. Everything is as clear as a bell. However the record still has that trademark TVOTR (as they are known the trade) Dance, punk, hip-hop, to full on South African funk mélange. The experimentation is still there but it’s presented in a more accessible manner. It seems that lyrically the band has grown-up. Sure, love figures as usual but there seems to be a newfound paranoia and aversion to 21st century technology. Although this isn’t blatantly explicit, most of the songs seem to lament a type of love lost in our society. Want references? I suggest‘Stork & Owl’, ‘DLZ’ or ‘Crying’. To spout a cliché, it’s the same trick Radiohead pulled off 11 years ago with ‘Ok Computer’. Many bands have tried to capture this sentiment (Bloc Party comes to mind) but none of them have really managed. TVOTR pulled it off and put an original spin on the theme as well. The centerpiece and album summation is found in first single ‘Golden Age’. In the band’s own words, it is an attempt to create a utopian ideal within the structure of a pop song. Personally, I only half agree with that. The utopian ideal is there, but as for the song being pop… It’s only pop in TVOTR terms. Best described as a prince-like funk number that erupts into a Everest size chorus, it is the catchiest song of the band’s repertoire and a sign that they are capable of pulling off the most extreme of stunts. They are the first group to truly honour his Purpleness and get it right. Along with ‘Ok Computer’, I can see a homage to that other society conscious album: ‘Sign O the Times’. It’s the detail that never ceases to amaze me in TVOTR’s music. For example, a Beach Boys ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ creeps in beautifully during ‘Family Tree’, and in ‘DLZ’ there’s a melodic whistle which unfurls unobtrusively. ‘Dear Science’ ends on the raunchy note of ‘Lover’s Day’ – a track which has TVOTR release the inner caveman. It’s a huge phallic track book-ended by a brass band that sounds oddly Disney-like. Maybe after all the wars and computers a good shag is the ideal solution. Who knows? All I can say is that Dear Science is a magnificent love/ hate letter to this decade which ends on the hippy ideal that ‘all you need is love’.

For this shoot we just needed red dress. After shooting a few shots with Thea standing up, we decided to try out a different pose, with her sitting on the floor holding the roses in her hands. The lights were toned down to a single soft box from the left to create the dramatic shadow on her face. These accentuated the contours of her face and created a heavy mood. Once the shot was chosen, Matthew removed all references to the studio environment, and created a silk background for a special look. He also added more roses and petals around Thea.

Thankfully enough, the very mention of study is enough to convince most student to act desperate and Desiree made a meal of it. Once the photo was sorted, away went our studio’s design books to be replaced by a library scene with more books and notes than Einstein could handle.

Daphne Gatt
Daphne managed to find an hour in her busy medical student life to turn up at our studio on a Sunday morning. Using natural light from a north facing window and a golden reflector, we tried to give Daphne’s face a nice glow. Once the shot was sorted, Matt started work to add a bit of Brrr to the photo, and with a wintry scene in the background and some snowy illustrations, we think he pulled it off.

Photography in December by Richard Muscat Azzopardi
photos@muscatazzopardi.com Christmas is the obvious candidate for December. The entire country is decorated for the festive season – inside and outside – so it would be close to impossible to shoot anything without Christmas creeping in. Which is not necessarily a bad thing as one of the biggest lessons in photography is to work with what you’ve got. This applies to equipment, your models and locations. Try and think outside the box to come up with original ideas and perspectives – all the colours and lights around should give you plenty of room for experiment.

November Winner:
Still Life
At this time of year we are inundated with Christmassy objects so might as well make the best out of them. Find the little things which make this season recognisable and look for new angles for defamiliarization. You will probably be shooting in low light as, at this time of year many days are wet. Keep a steady hand and, if possible, look for support when shooting. A tabletop tripod or beanbag
will usually do the trick. Keep the Macro setting of your camera in mind – it can give you a completely new perspective on objects. Most point and shoot cameras have a macro option, so it’s the perfect opportunity to try it out. On D-SLRs you’ll need a lens with a macro option but, if you look hard enough, there are affordable ones around.

Travel shots
The Christmas holidays are traditional travelling periods, so don’t forget to take your camera along. Tourism and photos go hand in hand but, many take photos with very little though about the end result. Keep in mind the Christmas spirit and, with a little care and some tips, you can get fantastic results. We are all used to seeing photos of landmarks but, taking photos when they are decorated for the holiday season will give you the edge. It’s good to look for contrast and remember that clashing subjects can make photos intriguing.
David Aquilina of Ghargur is the winner of November’s competition, which had sorrow as a theme. He has won a fabulous 3 man Tent from Aztec.
n ed o i m t i e o t t h e o T Ph mp Co Christmas & Malta's Winter While the main story this month is about Christmas scenes we’ve decided to make the competition slightly wider since you’ll probably be stuffing your faces over the Christmas period. Malta’s winter is probably one of the best periods to shoot outdoor even though we’ll be accepting shots taken indoor with a Christmas theme (as per the article). Send us your best shots on info@yellmalta.com by the 19th January make sure to write

Moving onto specifications, the camera will feature a 12MP MOS sensor, image stabilisation, 5fps continuous shooting and maximum shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second. Olympus also introduced six art filters. In their own words these “use different settings to create incredible photographic effects that would otherwise require additional lenses, filters or complex editing.”

Tech Windows 7 Leaks as Torrent
Microsoft announced Windows 7 at the end of last month, but on Pirate Bay, the new version of Windows is already up for download. The pre-beta version was probably leaked by developers who attended Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference were the software behemoth handed out official pre-beta copies. Critics have touted the new version as a fixed ‘Vista light’ as most of the improvements – like the swifter start-up, lower system requirements, and a laxer security warning system – are small and incremental. The major innovation will be compatibility to touchscreen monitors which could provide alternative input to the mouse. Microsoft thinks that if the technology catches up, we’ll be prodding our monitors, much as we prod our iPhones. The OS is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, weighing in at 2.72Gig and 3.36Gig respectively. Both versions are yet to be publicly tested, so beta downloaders are likely to face a number of bugs. Windows 7 is expected to launch in 2010.

The first Maltese gaming store online
Maltese gamers have something to cheer about as Lootbucket – Malta’s first online gaming store – has launched to a growing user base. Gamers of any platform can register free and trade new and used games, as well as related gear. A number of inbuilt features – such as instant SMS notification, Flickr integration and RSS feeds – help facilitate transactions between users. There is also a seller trust and reputation rating which is based on actual buyer feedback. The credit system is recognized by Paypal and allows users to list products in exchange for bought credits. Lootbucket can be tried and tested at www.lootbucket.com .
Microsoft to launch anti-facebook
Microsoft wants a finger in every pie and now, by transforming the Windows Live web services into a social networking site, it’s moving into Facebook territory. The new service will include photo sharing and integration with 50 other communities, including Flickr, LinkedIn, Pandora, Photobucket, Twitter, WordPress and Yelp. Although breaking the Facebook and MySpace dominance will be difficult, Microsoft is expected to gain a head start by exploiting the 268 million users of their messenger service.

AVG’s reputation as AVG Antivirus Not ification one of the better free anti-virus program Do you want to delete makers took a hit after file user32.dll? a program update they released wrecked havoc OK on a large number of Windows XP systems. Users who installed the recommended update were given a false virus alarm and instructed to delete file ‘user32.dll’ – a critical system file which AVG misdiagnosed as a trojan. Those who followed the software’s advice to quarantine or delete (AVG uses the word ‘heal’) the infected file had their PCs stuck in a cycle of reboots, which users could only stop by using the Windows installation CD. Those without a CD were stuck in a rut until AVG provided a utility fix. Most Maltese users were spared as the problematic update affected AVG 7.5 and 8 in the Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish language versions.
Barack Obama stars in online game
Fresh from winning the election, Barack Obama now has his own on-line game: a retro Super Mario style 2D platformer called Super Obama World. The running and bouncing Obama collects American flags and battles a wide assortment of enemies, including lobbyists, lipstickwearing pit bulls and, in the last level, Sarah Palin herself in a snow machine.

Why pay for on-line storage when you can get it free? Microsoft will soon increase its free SkyDrive storage space from five to 25 gigabytes. By default, users can only upload five files at a time, but there is an ActiveX download which allows drag-and-drop uploads through a browser. At this stage, the 50mb file size limit remains a potential drawback, but other websites – such as Mozy.com – offer free space with no file size limit.

China labels internet addiction a clinical disorder.
Earphones a pacemaker menace
Having released its first diagnostic definition, China will classify internet addiction as a clinical mental disorder as early as next year. The new diagnostic definition has already been used in court in the case of 22-year-old Hu Ange from the Sichuan Province who pleaded insanity through internet addiction for poisoning both his parents with rodenticide to spend their money on on-line games.
Portable MP3 players can cause dangerous interference with pacemakers and defibrillators a recent study announced at the American Heart Association Conference revealed. The problem stems from the earphones that contain a magnetic substance called neodymium. According to the study, users are perfectly safe if they keep earphones at least 3cm away from the skin surface of the area where the device is implanted.

Red Alert 3 CD-Key Fiasco
Users of Google mail will now be able to speak to each other through microphone and webcam thanks to a new service expected to boost the mail’s popularity. Although Gmail has shot to 113million users, it is still a distant third behind Hotmail, which boasts 283million, and Yahoo with 274million.
The launch of Red Alert 3 was plagued by a printing problem which resulted in a percentage of the first run manuals to be printed without the last digit of the CD key. EA asked users to contact customer care, or better just guess the last digit. “There is a maximum of 36 possible entries, so it’s likely you’ll hit the correct number or letter before then,” said their Website.

COLOURS for Autumn / Winter AUTUMN/ WINTER
It’s also about shape. Many designers have aimed their spotlight on the waist. Jackets, dresses and skirts have been carved to shape the natural womanly curves into a stylish new silhouette. Coats have been contoured and sculpted, with bell sleeves and stand away collars. You can wear these new shapes loosely or simply add a belt to create your own look.
Autumn Winter 2008/9 is all about making a statement. That means statement coats, statement fabrics, statement heels, statement shoulders, statement jewellery and... statement hair!
Tomato red is definitely a hot colour for winter. Look out for rich autumn colours, inky midnight blues and burnt earth tones. In contrast to the autumnal hues, winter white and ice cream colour palettes have been favoured by some designers. And there are many more colours on the runway, like mushroom, warm chocolate, dusty pink, rose petal, rich aubergine, olive, midnight sapphire, gunmetal grey, slate blue and deepest kingfisher teal.
City life fashion takes a trip to the countryside, with designers going mad with plaid and tweed. This autumn we`ll be seeing a fusion of military, soft gothic and medieval themes on the street wardrobe. Just take your pick!
The good news is there seems to be a fashion hue to suit every woman in the 2008/9 autumn fashion palette – so go and enjoy your colour quest!

ACCESSORIES
1. Accessories trends are also about making a statement – think big, bold and beautiful. 2. The more popular accessories of this season have to be the five pointed star necklace and the chunky meteorite gemstones. A colourful plastic necklace also makes a playful and stylish fashion statement. Multi string beads and pearls will add that extra touch of glamour to your New Year’s Eve outfit. 3. This season your waist is going to be the centre of attraction, so make sure to fill your wardrobe with plenty of slick, stylish belts.

Lazio may not be title hopefuls this year, but they are odds on to land a Champions league spot. For any chance of points against Inter, they will need to stop a top form Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is firing them in left, right and centre. But with strikers like Tommas Rocchi and Goran Pandev, home-playing Lazio have more than enough venom to strike back and an upset is not
Bayern Munich have hardly set the Bundesliga afire this season, and despite the presence of Ribery, Klose, Toni and Schweinsteiger, the goals are not coming in thick and fast. 10 DEC - Real Madrid vs. Zenit St Petersburg
Barcelona face Real Madrid in the Nou Camp stadium for what must be the most internationally celebrated European derby. Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola has an embarrassment of riches to choose from, with stars like Messi, Eto’o and Henry adding flair to a squad which includes Xavi, Iñesta and Puyol – all celebrated Eurocup winners. Real Madrid are going through a difficult phase at the moment, so Barcelona are odds for the win.
14 DEC - Juventus vs. Milan
Back to back losses to Juventus and poor Liga form have put Real coach Bernd Schuster in hot water. Nothing but a convincing win against Zenit will do, but without Ruud Van Nistelrooy popping them in, Real are may face serious problems against the Russian stronghold.
As the season progresses, Juventus are emerging as serious title contenders. At the Olympic stadium, they will be looking to underline their credentials against a very skillful Milan who welcome back Andrea Pirlo from injury. Milan are still patchy at the back, but with an ever improving Ronaldinho and a midfield which also boast Kaka and Seedorf, they starts as favourites.

Both teams play brands of fan pleasing attacking football, so expect lots of goals, and just for this match, betting on a 5-3 result would not be madness.

In a nutshell.
Based on a true case that occurred in the US in 1928, this emotional drama is about a mother’s struggle to find justice when she realises that the son who is returned to her after a kidnapping isn’t in fact her own.
Who’s in it?
Angelina Jolie dominates the poster, promotional material and screen-time as Christine Collins – the mother on a mission, and her performance has received heaps of praise since the film screened at the Cannes film festival. The everentertaining John Malkovich portrays a local minister who embraces Collins’ cause and helps her fight her way to the truth. Amy Ryans – very impressive as another distraught mother in ‘Gone Baby Gone’ – plays a convicted prostitute who befriends Collins and helps her through the darkest part of her ordeal.
Australia
In a nutshell.
Set during World War II, this film is unashamedly epic in scope, and hopes to be the biggest thing ever to be produced down under. It’s a stirring love story between a British aristocrat who inherits a large tract of land in Australia, and one of the men who helps her move the cattle across the country to avoid the bombing of Darwin (the city) during the war.
Why we were hyped.
Luhrmann has a short, but stunning filmography, and besides ‘Moulin Rouge!’ has also directed ‘Romeo + Juliet’ and ‘Strictly Ballroom’ in the 90s. Since then, he staged a successful version of ‘La Bohème’ on Broadway, and set about researching Australian history to see when best to set his next epic project. He claims to have made the film as grand and moving as such classics as ‘Gone with the Wind ‘and ‘Out of Africa’, which might sound pretentious, but is still mouth-watering. It’s highly unlikely that this film can live up to the massive hype it has generated (also courtesy of Oprah), but anything by Luhrmann should still be, at very least, a feast for the senses.
directed some of the best films of the past decade, including the wonderful ‘Mystic River’, ‘Million Dollar Baby’, and ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’. These character dramas seem to be his forte, and they suit his subtle and unhurried style. He also wrote the soft but effective musical score, as he has done on many of his recent films. With him behind the camera, and Angelina Jolie in front, this Oscar-bait of a movie has class written all over it.
Why we’re hyped.
Ron Howard was originally approached to direct, but he eventually declined, and Clint Eastwood took over. The manwith-no-name himself has peaked in his old age, and has
BOX-OFFICE FLASHBACKS
Who’s in it?
Nicole Kidman is Lady Sarah Ashley, and with a name like that you can probably imagine how she talks and walk, and what she likes to drink in the afternoon. The rough cattle-hand whom she meets down under is played by Hugh Jackman, who is an ozzie like Kidman, as is the rest of the cast. The film is directed by the amazingly talented Baz Luhrmann, who last graced the big screen with probably the most spectacular film of the century so far – ‘Moulin Rouge!’

In a nutshell.
Yes, you read that correctly. Yes, it’s showing at your nearest cinema. No, it’s not an adult film. Well, yes, it is for adults, but it’s a comedy.
Who’s in it?
Inkheart In a nutshell.
Kevin Smith, the man behind the ‘Clerks’ phenomenon and a handful of equally hilarious and respected comedies, wrote, directed and edited this subtly titled comedy. Seth Rogen (‘Knocked Up’, ‘Pineapple Express’) and Elizabeth Banks (the Spider-man franchise, Laura Bush in the upcoming ‘W.’) star as the title characters – two long-time friends who’s relationship never went that extra mile, and who share a flat but are having trouble finding rent money. When they reach rock bottom and their landlord turns off their water and electricity, they come up with a plan that’s so crazy it just might work. Thus begins the pre-production on the low-budget adult space-flick, Star Whores. The new Superman, Brandon Routh, and Justin Long co-star as friends who already seem to be in the business. Craig Robinson (‘The Office’, ‘Pineapple Express’) is their colleague who ends up as the film’s producer, a role he relishes, and frequent Kevin Smith collaborators Jason Mewes and Jeff Anderson (both from ‘Clerks’) help out on and off screen. Reallife porn star Traci Lords adds some sleaze to the cast as an actress loosely based on herself.
Based on a rather successful German children’s book, this fantasy tale brings a host of colourful story-book characters to life – literally. A young girl discovers that her father has a rather unusual talent – when he reads her story books, the characters spring to life. But when reading a book called Inkheart, he accidentally reads the nasty characters out into our world, and his wife into the book. No, this is not based on a true story.
Why we’re hyped.
Why we’re hyped.
Over the past two decades Kevin Smith has given us six unique and enjoyable comedies set within his ‘View Askew’ universe – using repeat characters and a roughly continuous story. He also penned and directed the underrated fatherhood drama ‘Jersey Girl’, and this time around seems to have managed to mix the uninhibited humour of the former with the sentimental touch of the latter. He’s also taken his love of Star Wars to a whole new level. This is one filmmaker who loves what he does, and so far it’s showed very clearly in everything he’s done.
Who’s in it?
Brendan Fraser (‘The Mummy’ trilogy, ‘Bedazzled’) stars as Mo – the man with the reading prowess. Sienna Guillory (‘Eragon’, ‘Love Actually’) is his misplaced wife and newcomer Eliza Bennett is his rather fortunate daughter. The colourful fantasy creatures that come crawling off the pages include performances by Helen Mirren (‘The Queen’), Jim Broadbent (‘Moulin Rouge!’, ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’, the latest ‘Indiana Jones’, ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe’), Paul Bettany (‘Wimbledon’, ‘The Da Vinci Code’) and creature-actor par excellence Andy Serkis (‘King Kong’, ‘Gollum’).
Ever since ‘The Lord of the Rings’ stormed to critical, popular and box-office heights, a number of fantasy films have tried to fill the void left by its absence. The ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, another phenomenon, is already reaching its cinema conclusion, and children and adults need new magical creatures and fantasy worlds to escape to. This book is the first of a trilogy, and seems to have attracted all the right kind of attention. With a stellar cast like the one listed above, I think we can be cautiously optimistic that this will be an extraordinary Christmas film for all ages.
The Day The Earth Stood Still
In a nutshell.
If the title rings a bell, it’s because this is a remake of a classic sci-fi epic. If it doesn’t, it’s because that classic sci-fi epic was released in 1951, way before most of us were even a glint in the milkman’s eye. Back then, the film revolved around an alien messenger landing on a planet earth, as it was, licking its wounds after WW2. He brought a warning, and tried to instil peace in a nuclear era, but when he couldn’t get his message across, things got nasty. This time around, with the cold war (hopefully) over, the scenario is updated with a warning about how humans are destroying the earth.
Who’s in it?
Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu, the alien messenger who looks like a human (and like that Matrix guy). This is another role where his wooden acting skills are actually an asset, and he looks suitably creepy in the film’s trailer. Jennifer Connelly tries to get through to him as the microbiologist Helen Benson, and veterans Kathy Bates and John Cleese have supporting roles (the latter being completely serious this time around).
Why we’re hyped.
We’re beginning to get tired of remakes, but at least this one arrives over 50 years later (as opposed to ‘the Hulk’ remake which was released about a week later). So for once we’re looking at the updating of a classic for a whole new generation (or two) of film fans, who have very probably never seen the original. Plus, these big-scale event movies are always loads of fun, and there’s nothing like the imminent destruction of earth to keep us glued to our cinema seats.

Marking the end of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, contemporary artist Christopher Saliba has teamed up with his brother Victor John Saliba, an IT specialist, to produce their most challenging work to date. In Virtual Confinement, Saliba has chosen 3D digital animation as his medium, applying the most recent computer technology. The conceptual themes that the artist explores are ones of physical and psychological isolation, as well as social issues that affect our post modern society. One video installation consists of a digital projection of a hand pressing against a screen, giving the feel of a Caravaggio painting. The 3D animations at first project the delicate and gentle movements of a palm and fingers but then the hand becomes a fist, beating against the screen to break free. Virtual Confinement provokes awareness on the social impact of the rapid growth of technology. Chris and Victor John, through conceptual art and graphic design create an interesting dialogue on the way our dependancy on computers for has resulted in the limitation of direct human contact.
