Wake Forest Postcards from the Past
2014 Calendar
Preserving our Treasures
Ailey
Young House Historic Landmark
The postcards featured in this calendar showcase some of the many treasures from Wake Forest’s history. It’s easy to see why these landmarks have been maintained and loved for over a century. One of our treasures needs some special attention and care. The Ailey Young House, built in 1875, was hidden for years behind trees and overgrown brush, long abandoned as a house and home. But if those walls could talk, a story of Wake Forest’s black community would be told. It was the childhood home of Allen Young, a community leader and the founder and principal of the Wake Forest Normal and Industrial School. Through his leadership thousands of black children were educated over the course of 50 years. All trace of the school’s buildings are long gone, along with the neighboring homes, leaving this “freedom house” as the lone survivor of the post-Civil War black community in Wake Forest. Damaged by fire and neglect, the Ailey Young House badly needs repairs and restoration. Proceeds from the sales of this calendar go directly into the fund established by the Wake Forest Historic Preservation Commission for this purpose.
Thank you for your support of this important project. Additional contributions are gladly accepted. Find out how at wakeforestnc.gov/ailey-young-house.aspx. More information on the history of the home and the Young families’ contributions to Wake Forest can be found at wakeforestnc.gov/ailey-young-house.aspx.
