EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

WELCOME BACK GRIFFINS TODD CORDREY 720-473-4403 TCORDREY@ECARVADA.ORG

Welcome Back Griffins! Welcome back to school Griffins!I am excited to welcome you to the 2020-21 school year. It will be our 13th year delivering the Early College model at the Early College of Arvada, ECA. As the executive director of ECA, I lead a team of great educators focused on equity, safety, academic success, and emotional growth for our griffins. Our teachers have chosen to be the best in the industry and have committed themselves to your child’s education. Along with our exceptional staff, it is our mission and model that set us apart from the neighborhood schools. We are anxious and ready to start school. We have two options for your child in-person or online. We hope that you feel comfortable at ECA and know that we are dedicated to your children. We will make sure your student is safe, comfortable, and ready to learn. If you have questions or need support please call or email me directly.

IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION JANICE ANDERSON JANDERSON@ECARVADA.ORG

We are fastly approaching our return for the 2020-21 School Year, and so many of us are eager to see each and every student again. I know that this year comes with much anxiety and uncertainty. Here at ECA we are going to do everything that we can to make this year as safe as we can for everyone. These are very unique times. For this reason we will communicate, as often as necessary via email, to make sure that you are all aware of all the ongoing changes that may arise throughout the semester. We are receiving daily communications from State and County offices with the most up to date information. For this reason, we ask that you remain flexible, nimble and patient with us, as this is new to us all. It is critical that you make sure your address, phone number and emails are all correct , so you receive the most up to date information as quickly as we send it out. Please read the learning plan carefully. This should have been emailed to you, but can also be found on our website. It is also very important that you fill out the Remote Learning Surveys by Friday, so we can staff and plan appropriately for the start of the school year.

Due to all the changes and accommodations to schools set forth by the State we will be pushing out the start of the 2020-21 school year by a few days and will have a staggered start. Middle School students will begin Monday, August 17th at 8 AM. High School students will come Monday afternoon for their pictures and IDs and registration (please see the schedule for exact times). The professional photographers will only be here on this day for IDs and school pictures. This year ALL students will be required to wear their IDs visible throughout the entire school day, for safety and the bar code on the IDs are part of our daily health screener. High School classes will begin Wednesday, August 19th. It is critically important that if a student does not feel well or comes directly in contact with a person who is COVID Positive that they remain home until a doctor has cleared them or they receive a negative test result. The more we all work together to prevent the virus, the more likely we can remain in school throughout the semester. Let us all work together to protect our students and our staff. This year will be very different, but one thing we can commit to is that ECA is focused on providing every student in school or Remote Learning with a quality education. This will be all possible as we all work together to make sure we keep each other safe and healthy. Thank you in advance.

Counselor Corner

I am thrilled to be joining the ECA community as the new School Counselor! Having Recently moved to Colorado from New York City, I look forward to connecting with students and exploring all that Colorado has to offer. Over the course of my education, I have earned a BA in Psychology from University of Miami, and both my Masters in Education in School Counseling and MA in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University.

BRIDGETTE FOSTER BFOSTER@ECARVADA.ORG

Outside of work, I enjoy rock climbing, skiing, sailing, and writing music. Of all my hobbies, sailing is what inspired me to become a School Counselor. Having coached sailing professionally for a number of years, I discovered my passion of teaching and working with a variety of age groups. Though my job was to teach students how to sail, I discovered that there was much more to coaching such as, teaching students how to work as a team, addressing their fears of the wind, and cultivating self-accountability. School counseling is similar in the sense that there is more to my role than scheduling and academic guidance. It is important to push past the concrete aspects of the job and really identify each student’s needs, goals, and consider them holistically. Though these are uncertain times, I want to encourage each student to remain strong, resilient, and continue to try their best to achieve their academic goals while maintaining their well-being. I look forward to getting to know all the members of the ECA community and thank you for welcoming me on board!

SCHOOL YEAR REMINDERS JULIE RAMSEY 720-473-4409

Welcome Back to the 2020-2021 School Year! This year will bring some changes for all of us. Don't worry, though. We're "All In This Together". We are ALL trying to figure things out so don't stress about the unknown. We're here to help answer your questions and guide you through all the changes. With things changing so fast, we're right alongside you in the world of the unknown. Remember to bring your masks to school. Everyone entering the building, staff and students included, will have a daily wellness check. If you feel ill at all, please stay home. Be sure to visit our website for helpful COVID-19 resources. www.ecarvada.org Please be prepared to bring your updated immunization records to our ECA PREP(atory) Day. Information about that date is located in this newsletter, on Facebook and on our website. Sixth and tenth graders should have their required boosters prior to the start of school. It is important to bring your refillable water bottles this year as only the water filling stations are accessible. The mouth pieces of the drinking fountains have been secured and cannot be used at this time. We also will not be issuing lockers this year so make sure you have a backpack or something to carry your supplies in. I'm a planner and for me it is a challenge to know that what I've planned is probably not what is going to happen. Know you are not the only one and that we are all doing all we can to make this as easy as possible. Will there be hiccups? Sure! But, that's okay. We'll get there... Enjoy the rest of your summer, stay well, and we'll see you soon

Fall college classes: This fall ECA is offering a variety of options to take college classes. Here are our options so far. ECA Campus classes: This fall ECA is offering a variety of options to take college classes. Here at our ECA campus students will have many of the language arts classes they’ve always had. We will be introducing a new College biology course, and environmental biology course this semester through WCU. Students in U.S. history will also be getting college credit for their course through WCU. We will also have our U.S. government class taught here by an adjunct professor from UCD. Registration for these classes will be done here in class. Frontrange campus classes: All students taking traditional classes from the FRCC campus will by and large done remotely. This means that if you sign up for a class to take on their campus you will be logging into a livestream of your class via remote learning instead of going to the campus. Each department has slightly different guidelines, and they will be coming out with more details in the coming weeks before school starts. Click HERE to see the latest details on how they are delivering classes. Registration for these classes will be done through coordination with me and the college.

AIMS classes: One of our new partners this year has a vast online and remote learning offering for the 20’-21’ school year. We are utilizing AIMS for its remote offerings since their closest campus is a good distance from our community. This will be a great option for students choosing to do distance learning only for the first semester. Our Jr.’s and Sr.’s will also be utilizing some of their class offerings whether they are choosing in-person or Distance learning to fill some electives. Registration for these classes will be done through coordination with me and the college. College prep: This is a crazy time to be a senior! Students first priorities will be preparing for the SAT which will happen for our seniors in September. If you haven’t already narrowed down your college preferences it’s go time! It's generally recommended that you apply to about a half dozen colleges, but you should have a good idea of your top 3-5 preferences. When school starts Ms. Foster and myself will be conducting one on one meetings to help guide you in the process. Do some research on your favorite colleges looking at their programs, tuition, and housing options. It's also never too early to begin working on college essays Here are a couple resources to help you out… https://www.princetonreview.com/college-advice/college-essay https://www.collegeessayguy.com/blog/how-to-write-a-college-essay College Visits: JUNIORS and undecided SENIORS! Go to this website where you can take a virtual tour of most of the colleges in our state and the nation. Just type in the name of the school and check it out! https://www.youvisit.com/collegesearch/

Middle School:Be ready to mask up! Your teachers and administration are excited to have many of you back in the building, but don’t forget that masks will be an essential part of our day to day living at ECA. Parents please start having students practice wearing masks for long periods of time as they will be required the whole length of the school day (with the exception of eating lunch). Have multiple masks available for the week, and practice regularly cleaning them. Middle school will be done in cohorts, meaning students will be with the same group of students throughout the school day. We will be doing our best to minimize interaction with other cohorts and maintain social distancing. We have a couple new teachers this year in the middle school that are excited to get started and meet you all. We also have several returning faces that most of you know well.

This is going to be an unusual school year, but we’re here to help you through it. We appreciate you being flexible with us as we navigate this strange time.

Extra Curricular Highlights

TIMBERGRIFFIN Kelly Graham

Hello families! Our Music and Theater program is excited to take this coming year to learn some new technology and focus on film and digital music making. We fully intend to continue with our Erocne Chorale, (our HS honor choir) but it will look a little different this year. For audition information contact Ms. Graham (Kgraham@ecarvada.org). We also will continue to grow our Thespian Troupe, production team and we intend to have at least 2 shows this year, but more information on how to audition for theater performances or to be a part of our troupe/production team will come in the early fall. Even in this crazy and uncertain time we want to offer meaningful extracurricular activities that keep kids engaged in their community and provide a creative outlet that teaches real work skills. You can stay up to date and see some of the cool stuff we've done by following us on our facebook page TimberGriffenTheaterCo or following us on instagram at @Ilove_APiano.
