2020 has brought a myriad of new experiences and challenges with it. The latest challenge to keep in mind is what school may look like in the fall. This multifaceted issue is one that we are all still learning details about. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends remote learning as the safest method. Nevertheless, the American Academy on Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommends in-person learning for the fall. Since going remote, they noted a documented uptick in cases of behavioral health issues and rates of abuse. Schools are critical to the development of a child’s social, mental, and emotional growth. Dr. Sean O’ Leary is a pediatric infectious disease specialist at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus. He is a COVID-19 survivor and supports plans for in-person learning in the fall. Two of the larger components of what O’ Leary mentioned include our increased knowledge compared to what we knew in March, and also taking into account the impact of schools that have reopened in other countries. Schools played a much smaller role in spreading the virus than anticipated. Even here in Colorado, there have only been 4 outbreaks in childcare facilities, and a majority of them were from adult to adult transmission. This is mainly because children are significantly less likely to both catches and spread the virus. While the chances of contracting the virus increase with age, teens are still less likely than adults to contribute to the spread of the virus. ECA plans to have in-person learning in some capacity in the fall. However, it is important that we, as a community, meet the needs and comfort levels of each of our students and their families. We have worked hard to create a learning plan that is flexible and adaptable. AAP created guidelines that help soothe the worried mind of parents and students a little, even if it wasn’t their intention. It is our intention to follow these guidelines as much as possible. If the last couple of months have taught us anything, it’s that a large portion of our nation relies on a parent’s ability to go to work and student’s ability to go to school. Another, more important lesson we have learned is the importance of taking full advantage of this life and being patient with one another. We really are in this together, and we can lay a stronger foundation for the future by protecting each other now, and ensuring that the next generation has the tools they need to pursue their dreams.
