Maroochy RSL Club Report Best Club on the Sunshine Coast 2010

Tom Casilieris,

General Manager

Hello members and welcome to our August & September Birthday edition of Backstage

The response to the Simplay card based gaming system has exceeded our expectations. This new technology offers an exciting new way of playing pokie machines by using your membership card. To find out more, visit our new membership lounge located at reception.

Maroochy RSL turns 38 this year and I’d like to thank all our current and past members, board, staff and our many guests who, over the years, have contributed to making Maroochy RSL the club that it is today!

This membership lounge is Maroochy RSL’s latest customer service initiative designed to attend to any enquiries about your membership and provide any information you need to know about Maroochy RSL.

We’re always looking at ways of improving and there are a lot of exciting changes happening at Maroochy RSL.

We have a big calendar of events coming up in August and September. Shout your Dad to Fathers Day lunch at Infusion Bistro with a delicious meal deal he is sure to love (check out page 6 for more details). Why not make a day of it and enjoy a game of Barefoot Bowls at The Swan Bowls Club. Both are sure to put a smile on Dad’s face.

Our new Mega Point Jackpot was recently launched with many members reaping the rewards (see page 12 for a photo of Max Ferguson, one of our recent winners). For your chance to win, just swipe your membership card with any food or beverage purchase or when playing the poker machines. This is a random jackpot with the highest prize of 250,000 points guaranteed to go off before it reaches the limit. Get set for the launch of our Star Rewards Loyalty Program which will be starting in September. I would like to thank the members who participated in the recent market research on our Star Rewards Loyalty Program. Your feedback has assisted in the planning for this exciting new initiative which will offer many more incentives and benefits for being a Maroochy RSL member. More information to come soon.

Also at The Swan Bowls Club, we’ve recently enjoyed another successful Winter Bowls Carnival with many guests travelling from New Zealand. A big congratulations to Barry Sullivan (Bowls Co-ordinator) & Peter Jervis (The Swan Bowls Club Manager) for their tremendous efforts and another very successful carnival. I invite all members to come along to the $10,000 Major Prize Draw on 8 September. We had a tremendous crowd at the last draw, such a good crowd that we’ve had to iron out a few operational issues and we’ll be better prepared next time. The June winners are featured in our Out & About Section on page 16.

On the Buses with the Maroochy RSL Courtesy Coach Team Many of you would be familiar with the friendly faces of the Maroochy RSL courtesy bus drivers. The gentlemen are entrusted with getting our members to and from the Club safely and soundly. The team of eight professional drivers is led by Paul Martin, the courtesy bus supervisor, with the majority of the team having served our patrons for well over five years a piece. Paul is certainly more than qualified for the job of ensuring the club’s team of drivers and three courtesy buses run well! After spending 14 years in the Royal Australian Navy, Paul worked for more than 10 years with the Mobil and Caltex oil companies looking after their fleet management, including supervising a team of 60 drivers. “We have a great team here at Maroochy RSL and we all really enjoy working to ensuring that we provide members, guests and visitors with a great experience from the moment they climb aboard, before they even reach the club,” Paul says. “Driving the bus is really a great social job as we get to meet all of the guests and know the regulars by name. We enjoy offering such a vital community service, particularly for older members who rely on us for a hassle free trip out.”

The club’s buses run every hour, on the hour, every day that the club is open, and collect passengers from Pacific Paradise and Mudjimba to Mountain Creek and the top of Buderim. Safety is the team’s key focus and the vehicles undergo a tough maintenance schedule of services every three weeks to ensure they are in top condition. Each bus is also retired and replaced every four years. “We have a great, friendly team of eight drivers who really love what they do,” Paul said. “We love working with our patrons and providing this community service. We look forward to seeing our club members and being that familiar face to welcome them every day,” Paul says with a smile.

Interclub Profile & Community News

Sharing the love THERE are not too many sports that you can play at competition level throughout your entire life – from primary school through to seniors. And there are even fewer sports where you can compete on equal terms against all age groups. Bowls is the ultimate non generational game. According to David Shaw and Iris James, presidents of The Swan Men’s and The Swan Ladies Bowls Clubs, this is one of the greatest assets of the sport. Iris said the Ladies club had seven junior bowlers ranging from nine to 16-years-old and all were doing well in district and club events. David said The Swan Bowls Men’s team had 89 and 90-yearolds regularly playing alongside an eight-year-old. “You can play lawn bowls from the time you learn to walk to the day you die,” he said. “Despite stereotypes, it’s a very non generational game.” Of course, the benefits of the game don’t end there. David, who has been president of the club for four years and a member for 12 years, says the list is endless but includes good fellowship, ideal conditions, great grounds, comradeship and friendly competition, and is inexpensive so a cheap sport for those on a budget. There is an activity or game taking place at the club every day and it is difficult to keep David away from the action. He joked that his wife claims he plays eight days a week. Iris said the ladies group, which meets monthly and then every three months with other clubs within the Sunshine Coast district,

of a lifetime sport play three to four times a week. Combined, the clubs have 480 members, of which about 120 are female. “The women’s club started 80 years ago,” Iris said. “There have been more female members start since the dress code relaxed. Gone are the days of white stockings and long dresses and petticoats. It’s more relaxed and casual now, which we love.” The club recently held its 45th Winter Bowls Carnival, which attracted entries from around Australia and New Zealand, including of course, some members from the Swan Bowls Club. “It’s very beneficial to members because it’s a close knit group who really look out for one another,” Iris said. “It’s a great social event“ The club offers free coaching sessions for beginners at 9.30 every Wednesday and Saturday morning. Iris said it is an opportunity for people to come along and see if they are interested. After a couple of sessions they will be tutored by a member, who will ensure they are looked after, welcomed to the club and ready to play a game.

To enquire about joining the male or female clubs call 5443 1370.

Support for a Maroochy RSL Life Member The Maroochy RSL, the Maroochy RSL Gunnadoo Club and the Maroochy RSL Sub Branch have thrown their support behind a long-standing life member. The three clubs have each provided funding totalling $1800 to cover the cost of an aged care chair to ensure Doreen Ratcliffe’s life is more comfortable.

Daryl Lethem, Merv Kidd and Bob Smith presenting the aged care chair to Doreen Ratcliffe at Allora Lodge, Maroochydore 4

backstage

Doreen was the club’s seventh life member and, along with her late husband George, devoted an incredible amount of time and energy to the club for many years. Doreen instigated the club’s bingo sessions and ran them twice weekly for many years. “She ran the biggest and most successful bingo, at its time, on the Coast,” her daughter Di Sneddon said.

This was in the days before the pokies and the revenue generated from Doreen’s bingo sessions was a huge help to the club. But in recent years Doreen has suffered three strokes leaving her paralysed down her left side and in need of full time care. She is a high-care resident at Maroochydore’s Allora Lodge. “In light of the outstanding and long serving contribution that Doreen made to our club we thought it only appropriate that we give something back to Doreen in a time of need,” said Tom Casilieris, Maroochy RSL General Manager. The chair is like a recliner lounge on wheels, providing convenience and comfort. “It has proved to be a God-send,” Di said.

The Swan Bowls Club Report

Peter Jervis,

Swan Manager

Hello again from The Swan Bowls Club, We have had a great couple of months here at The Swan Bowls Club. Many visitors from around Australia and New Zealand have joined our locals to again fill nearly all of the Maroochy Swan Carnival prelude events. There are still many here competing in the 48th Winter Bowls Carnival and other events, which run through to early August. We hope you have all enjoyed the Sunshine Coast this year. With the carnival nearly over there is now even more room for anyone interested in a game of barefoot bowls. For only $6 for adults (kids free), it is a cheap and enjoyable way to spend some time, especially as the whole family can play. If interested, please phone our Bowls Manager Barry Sullivan, on 5443 1370.

bistro

Don’t forget to visit Bistro 36. Ryan, our Executive Chef, and his staff are doing a great job to serve fantastic meals at very reasonable prices (see advert for details of our speciality nights). For those who enjoy Terrific Tuesday and Thursday’s Morning Fun on The Avenue at the RSL why not try Wacky Wednesday here at The Swan Bowls Club. Kathy and the patrons have alot of fun! There are raffles, games and more, and it is only $2 per sheet for the opportunity to win some great prizes. Hope to see you at The Swan Bowls Club.
