Maroochy RSL
Autumn edition 2012 Complimentary
Enjoy Autumn dining and entertainment at Maroochy RSL
On behalf of the Maroochy RSL Board of Directors, welcome to the Autumn edition of Backstage. In mid-January financial service members of Maroochy RSL voted for the amalgamation of the Maroochy RSL and Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch at a special general meeting. The decision to amalgamate was prompted by the government’s newly established Commissioner for Charities Office, which will see RSL sub branches with associated clubs across Australia, like us, heavily taxed if they do not amalgamate. This amalgamation was seen as the best way forward for both club and sub branch members to achieve shared objectives and take the positive step forward. In April, we commemorate the most important day on the RSL calendar, ANZAC Day, where we honour those who have served Australia. There will be two ceremonies, one at 4.15am at the Cenotaph on the Esplanade at Cotton Tree, and the main march commencing at 8.30am through Memorial Avenue and onto the Cenotaph at Cotton Tree. Entry into Maroochy RSL prior to 1.00pm is by ticket only. Sub Branch, Ex-Service and current service personnel can pre-purchase tickets at the Maroochy RSL Sub Branch and Maroochy RSL from March 26. Maroochy RSL will open for normal trading at 1.00pm. (For a full program of the events for ANZAC Day, please refer to page 5). We have a lot planned for the coming months throughout the club. We hope you enjoy the great dining and club activities and we wish you and your family a very happy and safe Easter.
I welcome you to the Autumn edition of Backstage. With one year under my belt at Maroochy RSL, I am very optimistic about our future. The newly amalgamated group will provide a solid and successful way forward for the club and its members. (Turn to page 6 to read more about the amalgamation process). The four-day Easter weekend is a great time for family days out. We have a great selection of family meals at Infusion Bistro and our Mystery Island Kids Club will be holding an egg hunt. On Easter Sunday there may even be a visit from the Easter Bunny. (For a full list of the Easter school holiday activities being held in Mystery Island see page 7). We have something extra special for the children this Easter School holidays, with the Peter May’s international comedy magic show - Magic Happens. Make sure you get here early every Wednesday night, kids eat free with every paying adult. (Refer to page 19 for more information). The second Sunday in May is Mothers Day, so don’t forget to spoil your mum and let her know how much you appreciate her! Treat Mum to a decadent buffet breakfast on Level 1 at Maroochy RSL. All Mums will receive a complimentary glass of sparkling wine and chocolates. (For more details, please see page 15 - bookings can be made on our website or at reception). With the footy season fast approaching it’s time to grab a drink with mates at your favourite local, Heroes Sports Bar. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a burger and beer, and watch the latest footy on one of the many big screens. Be sure to read through the calendars for March-May and check out pages 18 and 19 for full details on all the entertainment, promotions and meal specials throughout Autumn. On behalf of the team at Maroochy RSL I wish you all a safe Easter Break.

community “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.”
An Ode to The Ode The moving lines of The Ode of Remembrance are synonymous with ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services across Australia and New Zealand. While Australian and New Zealand residents always recognise the touching lines even before the fifth word is read, little is known about the true origin of The Ode and why it’s played at these key services and throughout RSL clubs today. The Ode is an extract taken from the elegy For The Fallen, by English poet and writer Laurence Binyon (1869 - 1943). It is in fact, the fourth stanza of the iconic poem. During World War I, Binyon wrote the poem while working as an assistant keeper of prints and drawings at the British Museum. He was an author of several volumes of verse. For The Fallen was first published in the London Times on September 21, 1914 and later in many anthologies of war verse, including The Winnowing Fan and Poems of the Great War in 1914. The Ode was selected in 1919 to accompany the unveiling of the London Cenotaph and, like so many memorial traditions, was shared across the Commonwealth for similar events. The Ode’s connection with ANZAC Day first originated with the Queensland ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee, which printed the poem on the cover of a collection of sermons and addresses for services. This book was first published in 1921 and was the start of a tradition of associating The Ode with commemoration services in Australia and across the British Commonwealth. Since then The Ode has been printed on War Memorials and is now at the heart of all rites of RSL clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand. Like many clubs across Australia, Maroochy RSL pay their respect to servicemen and women by playing The Ode at 6.00pm every night. Michael Liddelow, a board director for Maroochy RSL, committee member of the Maroochy RSL Sub Branch and chair of the Commemorative Committee for the Maroochy RSL Sub Branch, said every time he hears The Ode played he gets a lump in his throat. “The Ode is a symbol of respect for the men and women who didn’t make it back from war and also for those of us who did,” Mr Liddelow, a returned servicemen, said.
During this time, long lists of the dead and wounded continued to appear in the British newspapers. The first two lines in The Ode – ‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn’ – are thought to refer to the connection of those who didn’t make it back. “I think The Ode is such a powerful verse” Mr Liddelow said. “We will continue to live with our memories of war. But we’ll never forget those who didn’t make it back. They were very young and will never have the opportunity to grow old or age.” “They will always be the age they were when they were killed in battle.” “Age shall not weary them and we shall make sure they are not forgotten.” Mr Liddelow said many returned servicemen and servicewomen can relate to The Ode and that is why it’s as significant today as it was at time of release in 1914. “It acknowledges what they have done” he said. “Every serviceman who fought in a war will remember the people they fought alongside and the people they fought against.” “Any serviceman will get a lump in their throat – more on ANZAC Day and Rememberance Day – as we all know someone directly who died in combat and we think about them.” As chairman of Maroochy RSL’s Commemorative Committee, Mr Liddelow and his team ensure that all activities, such as ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day, are conducted in accordance with the protocols. One of the main areas that they ensure is carried out correctly, is the timing and reading of The Ode. “Traditionally, The Ode is read after the laying of the wreaths and before the conclusion of the actual service,” he said.
So what does the rest of The Ode mean and why is it so important?
“There is a set format for both events that needs to be adhered to. Those words are very powerful and relate to weariness, age, the symbolic going down with the sun and we will remember them.”
By mid-September 1914, less than seven weeks after the outbreak of war, the British Expeditionary Force in France had already suffered severe casualties.
“It’s such a powerful verse – it is little wonder it’s still used in services today.”
“The Ode is traditionally played at 6.00pm as it marks the going down of the sun.” “Some clubs pay their respects by dimming the lights and actually reading The Ode over the loud speaker. Every club has their own way of paying their respects with the reading of The Ode.”

New future for Maroochy RSL Club and Maroochy RSL Sub Branch Maroochy RSL and Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch have cooperatively joined forces to continue to provide vital services for veteran’s welfare, returned servicemen and women, club members, and support for the local region through ongoing sponsorship and donations to community groups. To provide a united front and take the positive step forward, financial service members of Maroochy RSL voted for the amalgamation in mid-January at a special general meeting. The newly amalgamated group, is looking forward to working together under one board, one common membership base and one common goal of providing a solid and successful future for the not-for-profit club and its members. Maroochy RSL Chairman Les D’Alton said the major decision was raised after government changes to how not-for-profit clubs may be taxed. It was seen as the best way forward for the club and the sub branch members to achieve shared objectives. “Last year alone, we provided more than $500,000 in cash and in-kind donations to local community and sporting groups. We also supported more than 60 different clubs and organisations via donations and sponsorships,” Mr D’Alton said.
6 backstage
“If we didn’t amalgamate we wouldn’t be able to continue this level of solid, grassroots support within the community, or to realise our many future plans for improving veteran welfare for returned service men and women on the Sunshine Coast.” Since the amalgamation an interim board has been appointed for the first nine months whilst the process is completed. After this period, the amalgamated club will hold the first AGM of the new association.

Supporting local musicians Over the years, Maroochy RSL has developed a strong following for supporting local musicians and providing top quality performances for their members and patrons.
She is also engaged regularly as a backing vocalist and has supported artists such as Daryl Braithwaite, Ross Wilson, Richard Clapton, Marcia Hines and Ricki Lee Coulter.
As local venues for live music become few and far between on the Sunshine Coast, Maroochy RSL, where possible, book as many local musicians on their nightly billings.
“There are many local musicians who are very appreciative of Maroochy RSL’s support,” Renae said.
In fact, there is a hardly a night at the club where a local musician isn’t wowing members. Local musicians who frequent the club’s stages include Renae Suttie, Gavin Hamburger, Sakura, Amazon Blue, Paul Terry Trio, Coast Folk Duo, and The Foggs just to name a few. Renae Suttie is one coast-based musician who performs at the club as a soloist and with her band Renae and the Swing Collective on a regular basis. After completing her jazz studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Renae has been performing professionally for the past 20 years across Australia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Fiji, Kuala Lumpur, New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
“One band I know literally lives only one block away from the club. Now that’s local.” “There has definitely been a huge decline in the number of venues on the Coast, which host live music of the past few years.” “A number of factors have contributed to this, such as noise restrictions, anti-smoking laws, strict drink-driving laws, and of course the current financial times.” “I take my hat off to the venues who continue to support live music,” she said. “Maroochy RSL is a rare find, hosting live music nearly every night of the week.” As well as solo performances at Elevations Bar, Renae also sings with her husband Andrew in their duo Sakura.
