Community Wins Big from Humble Raffle IT turns out the humble raffle can pack a big punch. Just ask Billy Shaw. The retired Sunshine Coaster and Vietnam veteran is the proud president of Gunnado, an interclub of the Maroochy RSL that has donated to local causes by simply holding six raffles a month. “It might only sound small but it gives you a good feeling to know that the money we’re raising is helping someone who needs it,” he said. Billy first heard the idea from the Wynnum Manly RSL, when a busload of its members dropped into the Maroochy RSL in 1993 and talked about their own fundraising group with the same name. Billy, who was on the Maroochy RSL board, was part of a team that voted to establish the same project here. Soon enough, a dedicated 14-member committee, including Billy’s wife Emily, set about achieving the simple goal of raising money for the community. At first, Gunnado focused on supporting individuals but Billy says the past seven years has seen a shift to organisations “because it helps a lot more people”. The list of beneficiaries is as long as it is impressive. Bloomhill Cancer Help, the Kidney Foundation, Sippy Creek Animal

Refuge, the local Riding for the Disabled Association, QLD’s Amputees Association, Guide Dogs QLD and the annual Give Me Five for Kids campaign, to name a few, have all regularly received donations from Gunnado. “It is very rewarding that we’re able to do it,” Billy said. “It’s the ones that the Government doesn’t seem to want to help; we try to help them as much as we can.” Billy is especially proud of Gunnado’s unwavering support of Give Me Five for Kids since its inception 11 years ago. The fundraising campaign, spearheaded by local radio station Mix FM, buys much-needed medical equipment for the children’s ward at Nambour Hospital. “Most of us on the committee have grandkids and you just never know, one day our grandkid might be in that hospital,” he said. Gunnado does not want all the credit for its contribution to the community. Billy says the secret of the group’s success is the Maroochy RSL. “We have people who have become regulars and they take regular numbers in the raffle every Friday,” he said. “So a lot of it’s the generosity of the members of the club.”

In Memory of RSL Life Member Col Evans 1924 - 2011 While we are mourning the loss of our friend, others are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil. Honorary life membership is reserved as an honour to be bestowed by the RSL Board of Directors in recognition of an individual’s outstanding contribution.

Maroochy RSL Fishing Club Local fishing enthusiasts have been hooked on the Maroochy RSL Fishing Club since 1956.

our time there was sunny and fine, if a little cold” reports club secretary Cheryl Winstanley.

The long-standing social fishing club was established in the late 50s with financial assistance from Maroochy RSL. Seeing this as a valuable community activity, Maroochy RSL continues to provide facilities and in-kind support including storage and providing a boardroom for the club’s monthly meetings.

“Over fifty fish were caught by the members who attended. There were two large flathead, a couple of bream, and a lot of good-sized whiting and tailor. The camping ground allows open fires so we took a good supply of wood and sat around the campfires after dinner, snug and warm.”

Presently there are more than 60 active members ranging from 30 to 86 years-of-age, from all walks of life, who all meet with two objectives – to fish and have fun with like-minded people.

“We cooked lamb roasts in our webber BBQ on Saturday, and baked vegetables on the BBQ which was quite a feat, but the dinner was beautiful,” said Cheryl.

Switching between beaches, estuaries, dams, off-shore and occasionally fly-fishing from Rockhampton to Tweed Heads, the club has a style and location to suit fisherman of varying levels and ages.

Remember to save the date for our Christmas Party at the Maroochy RSL on the 10th December.

Fishing Club president, Brian Jacob said thanks to Maroochy RSL’s support the club has been a long-standing social activity for the whole community.

“Without the support of Maroochy RSL Club, Swan Boat Hire and Maroochy Fishing World, our club wouldn’t exist,” Brian said. Anyone wishing to join the Maroochy RSL Fishing Club is more than welcome. For more information call Brian on 0402 123 088 or Alan Webster on 0421 042 933.

“We encourage everyone who is interested to join,” Mr Jacob said. “Every second Sunday, we have a weigh-in breakfast in Cotton Tree park, which is a lot of fun. We also have a lunch planned for the 30th October. “The club meets on the first Saturday of each month and we hold five fishing camps per year, so it is totally up to the individual as to how much involvement they have in the club. In August we camped at Carlo Point, only a few minutes drive from Rainbow Beach township, and renown for its great fishing and crabbing. There are kilometers of protected waterways reaching up through the Great Sandy Straits to the northern tip of Fraser Island. “After one heavy shower on Friday, the rest of

Kids have a Brighter Future Maroochy RSL is making a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children, by proudly supporting the Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation’s Shoes and Socks 4 Kids Program. The local project provides high-quality leather BATA shoes and three pairs of Underworks socks free of charge to children living in poverty. Maroochy RSL’s donation will supply over 30 pairs of shoes and socks to students at Maroochydore and Kuluin Primary Schools. Foundation managing director Pauline Preston says the volunteerrun charity could not help the schools without Maroochy RSL’s support. “It makes a huge difference,” she said. “We have a strong policy where money raised from the community goes directly back to that community.” The first delivery to the schools occurred recently and a second shipment will arrive soon. The program is based on a survey conducted in every state primary school on the Sunshine Coast to identify children in need. “It’s based on real numbers, not statistics,” Ms Preston said. “Every school we spoke to said with winter upon us, we need to get back to the basics – we need closed-in shoes and socks.” Disadvantaged children turning up to school with no shoes, worn-out or inappropriate footwear is an ongoing problem for schools throughout Australia.

For health and safety reasons, it can result in the child being excluded from school activities and sports or even worse, sent home. Children may also choose to stay at home because it is easier than trying to concentrate and learn in class when their feet are cold and they feel miserable. Those who do turn up to school wet and cold are at a higher risk of illness, resulting in more absenteeism and lost learning time. “We have children who come to schools with staples and sticky tape holding their only pair of shoes together, or even thongs in these winter conditions,” Ms Preston said. The local foster carer launched the Brighter Future 4 Kids Foundation two years ago with teacher’s aide and indigenous community adviser Rose Houston. It started its Shoes and Socks 4 Kids drive in February and still needs to find funding to support more children on the Sunshine Coast. Anyone wanting to help should visit www.brighterfuture4kids.org.au

Maroochy RSL Computer Club This self help computer users group has a core of very dedicated people who support and encourage members to take advantage of modern information technology to meet their individual needs. They meet regularly in the boardroom on Level 1 of Maroochy RSL, which is equipped with a large screen making it ideal for computer training demonstrations. It’s also great for solving problems and helping members that have any queries. Today, information technology includes not just computers, but also mobile phones, web-cams and many other emerging technologies. So if you want to keep up with the grandkids check out this computer club. The Maroochy RSL Computer Club has regular workshops with guest speakers, to help you broaden your understanding of available technology and what is possible.

Any RSL member who wishes to learn more about computers is welcome to attend, we meet the third Friday of every month (except in December) at 7.00pm. Plus there is a club Christmas party in December. For more information on the Maroochy RSL Computer Club, contact the club president Graeme Dennis on 0429 637 088 or sinned2@optusnet.com.au or the club secretary, Rick Bennett on 5479 4490.

Place you CTP insurance through Crime Stoppers and help your community. If you are over 30 years of age and own a registered vehicle your community needs your help! Crime Stoppers Queensland (a registered charity) has an agreement from QBE Insurance to obtain a $20 donation from every CTP transfer. Help support this initiative and strive to provide our loved ones the safest community possible. Prosciutto Wrapped Mooloolaba Prawn & Asparagus Salad Brett McRae

INGREDIENTS - serves 6 1kg King prawns peeled and deveined (approx 150g per person) 6 slices prosciutto cut in half 2 bunches of fresh asparagus spears 500g rocket Salsa 1 avocado sliced 1 red onion

1 punnet cherry tomatoes 2 shallots ½ bunch Italian parsley Salsa Dressing 2 lemons 1 tbsp seeded mustard 100mL olive oil Salt and pepper to season

Preparation Method Wrap the prawns in prosciutto and place on skewers for ease of grilling. Slice the avocado, shallots and parsley and finely dice all the remaining ingredients for the salsa. Cut lemon cheeks for garnish. To make the salsa dressing, juice what’s left of the lemon, add a tablespoon of seeded mustard, 100ml of olive oil and season with salt and pepper (if the mix is too tart, use a drizzle of honey). Grill prawns and asparagus in a flat pan or on the BBQ. To plate, start with a bed of rocket, then add asparagus, salsa, finishing with the prawn skewers and the lemon cheek. (To add your own twist - fruit, nuts or soft cheeses also go well with this salad). Enjoy!

Beginner’s Luck Pays Off at Pokies It’s enough to turn regular punters green with envy. Heather Stempa had only decided on a whim to try the poker machines when she recently dropped into The Swan Bowls Club. The holiday-maker from New Zealand only has a flutter occasionally so a patron playing nearby kindly showed her what to do. Heather only entered $10 and played for just a few minutes. Then, she hit the jackpot, literally. As a winning combination of symbols lined-up before her eyes, Heather could not believe her luck. She was suddenly more than $18,000 richer. “I was astounded because I don’t normally win anything like this at all,” Heather laughed. “I had only been playing for about five minutes, that’s all it took, and it was just something to do before I headed back to the resort where we’re staying. “I was just flabbergasted.” Perhaps Heather was in too much shock to immediately kick up her heels. “I didn’t celebrate with great gusto,” she admits. Instead, Heather simply announced the news to her large family back home, whom she says were ‘highly excited’, and bought

her husband Kevin a bottle of wine. The couple quickly decided to invest the winnings wisely, using it to cover their annual trips to the Sunshine Coast. “It’s wonderful because it’s paid for our holiday this year and paid for our holiday next year,” Heather said. “We always come over each year so now we don’t even have to think about it next year.” The Stempas choose to holiday on the Sunshine Coast because of its weather and laid-back lifestyle, which reminds them of home. The region’s thriving bowling scene is also a huge drawcard for the two avid players. In fact, the reason Heather dropped into The Swan Bowls Club that fateful day was to register to compete in the Sunshine Coast Winter Bowls Carnival. No doubt, Heather will continue to visit the club, where she says she was congratulated so warmly by staff and other patrons when she won. Heather is also keen to thank the gentleman who helped her. “I was very pleased that someone showed me how to press the right buttons!”
