Maroochy RSL Club Report
Len Thompson,
Chairman
Hello Members, The silly season has snuck up on us once again this year, with Christmas and the New Year now only a few weeks away. You may have noted that the Backstage you are holding feels more weighty than usual? Backstage is now seasonal and contains more information on all of the events and entertainment within the club over the next three months. Thank you to all our current members who have already renewed their membership for 2011, or collected their new membership card. By doing so, you would have received an entry into the draw to win one of five 42” full HD LCD televisions, each valued at $1,199rrp. If you are still yet to renew your membership, you have until December 31 to do so and receive your entry into the draw. Winners names will be drawn on January 5, 2011 at 7.30pm and winners must be present in the club to claim their prize. Good luck! The Christmas Major Cash Draw will also be drawn on Wednesday December 15 at 7.30pm, where six lucky members will win a share in $10,000 cash. Gain entries automatically by simply enjoying the club’s facilities up until 7pm on December 15. The next Major Cash
Draw will begin at 7.30pm on December 15 and will run until March 9, 2011. Why not celebrate the beginning of 2011 with us? There’s much to choose from for New Years Eve at Maroochy RSL. Join us for dinner downstairs in Infusion Bistro or Coffee on First, or enjoy a two course buffet meal on level one, and then dance the night away on The Avenue to The Elements. Throughout the school holidays, Mystery Island will be holding special events including a Christmas party on December 18, a Beachy Weekend from Friday January 7 to Sunday January 9, an all-day Jungle Party on January 15, and from January 24 to 28 there will be Aussie Day celebrations with all sorts of Aussie fun on offer. For more information, see page 6 or visit our website. Please enjoy the holiday period responsibly and when visiting the club, take advantage of our designated driver program and courtesy buses. The Members of the Board and staff would like to take this opportunity to wish all our members a joyous and safe festive season, and we look forward to welcoming you into the club in the New Year.
Life is anon adventure Mystery Island AAAARRRGH me hearties, don’t you just wish you could escape to Mystery Island? Unfortunately for you this pirate-themed kids’ haven is not for adults. Mystery Island is Maroochy RSL’s Kids Club and the team of six staff who run it, work hard to make it an adventure for their young guests. Mystery Island co-ordinator Benita McGregor said the “island” caters for 4 to 17 year-olds and the staff provide adjunct care. This dedicated team is focussed on providing a fun environment that stretches the imagination and opens up a world of possibilities.
A Beachy Weekend is planned from Friday January 7 to Sunday January 9. Get ready for a weekend of volleyball, competitions, boat races and bucket loads of fun.
Mystery Island is equipped with a huge array of activities including video games and a mini theatre with seats shaped like a ship and cannons attached to the side. But in this technology-driven world Benita said the staff were keen to encourage children to develop their imagination and come up with their own ideas for games and activities.
Mystery Island will take a walk on the wild side on January 15 with an all day Jungle Party. Leaping leopards and slinky snakes will add to the jungle excitement.
“There are lots of craft activities available and anything the imagination can come up with,” Benita said.
And from January 24 to 28 there will be Aussie Day celebrations with all sorts of Aussie fun on offer.
“There’s a whole world of possibilities and we really try and provide something that does not require materials.” With school holidays rapidly approaching, the team are putting the finishing touches on a summer of holiday activities to be held at Mystery Island. These include a Christmas party on December 18 featuring Christmas-themed games and activities – and you never know, there could be a surprise visitor.
On Saturday, January 22 Mystery Island will stage its So You Think You’re a Star night with singing, dancing, acting, jokes, story or poem reciting. Got another talent? Come and show us.
Benita said there were no set guidelines for the activities. They provide a basic structure and let the children who are there on the night dictate how the activities progress, so there is plenty of room for imagination and creativity. Mystery Island caters for 4 to 17 year olds and is open from 5pm – 10pm Monday to Friday; 10am – 10pm Saturday; and 10am – 3pm and 5pm – 10pm on Sunday. During school holidays it is also open from 10am – 2pm weekdays.

Batter up
for a game of backyard cricket
Just like backyard rules, it is a game where everyone bats and everyone bowls and there is no limit on age and no expectation of skill. It’s all about a love for cricket and a good time.
to hold a staff day or any charities looking for a charity fund-raising day, to consider a day of backyard cricket.
The club is also looking for new teams to play and is celebrating its 35th season. Club secretary Kevin O’Callaghan has been there for 15 of those seasons, and says it’s a great way for the family to get together for a social day out.
“We’ll play anyone who wants to field a team as long as they acknowledge that our social club is under the rules and license of the Maroochy RSL and Ex Services Club”.
“Our mob just wants to play cricket,” he said.
“We play 30 to 35 overs per side, there are drink breaks every 10 overs and we supply a barbecue lunch and beverages,” Mr O’Callaghan said.
He teases there are no sheep stations up for grabs in this game and it doesn’t matter if members have never played cricket before. They just need to bring along some enthusiasm and a sense of humour. “To all past members – whatchya doin’ now and how’s the belly?” Mr O’Callaghan said.
The club is on a membership drive for the upcoming season, which gets underway in March with games every second Sunday through to the end of August.
It might be time to sign up for some recreational fun. Sign on day is Sunday February 27 at Maroochydore Primary School.
“We are seeking new members, whether they have played before or not, male or female,” Mr O’Callaghan said.
Games are played at Maroochydore Primary School and all gear is supplied. All membership and team enquiries can be directed to Kevin O’Callaghan on 5443 4689 or 0457 061 762.
And age should not be a deterrent. The club’s oldest player is in his late 60s and the oldest supporter is in his 80s. Mr O’Callaghan has put a call out to all small to medium businesses looking
Fountain funds
help wheel out the meals
It’s not quite a Wishing Well but the fountain in the foyer of Maroochy RSL is providing much-needed support to local charities and community groups.
While the Maroochydore organisation has the equivalent of six full time staff members, Mr Ogg said like any community group, the service could not get by without the help of its volunteers. “We have about 200 volunteers, many of who are dedicated and have given up their time regularly for about three years ” he said. But Mr Ogg said the organisation did not just support the community in terms of meal preparation and delivery but also through a range of community services, including Youth Justice programs, court-issued community service and support of people with disabilities through the STEPS program.
Members and visitors to the club are encouraged to throw their loose change in the fountain in support of these local organisations. A sign in front of the fountain displays the nominated charity, which changes every two months. The September recipient was Meals on Wheels Maroochydore, who received $350 donated by patrons and members throughout July and August. Maroochydore Meals on Wheels program manager Hamish Ogg said they were very grateful for all donations.
He said they also supported people referred by the Mental Health Association of Queensland, who volunteered their services as part of their rehabilitation into the workforce.
“This money will go towards buying a new burner for our soup production,” Mr Ogg said. Meals on Wheels provides freshly cooked, hot meals to community members who have difficulty preparing and cooking meals for themselves. That includes the production of about 40 litres of soup per day. The service operates from Monday to Friday and supplies about 200 meals a day to people living in Maroochydore, Cotton Tree, Alexandra Headland, Mooloolaba, Mountain Creek, Buderim, Forest Glen, Sippy Downs and Bli Bli. The organisation has been operating from its premises on Memorial Avenue since 1970, where Mr Ogg said it originally shared a kitchen with the RSL. It was founded and partially funded by members of the Maroochydore Rotary Club but today comes under the auspices of Suncare Community Services, formerly the Central Sunshine Coast Committee of the Ageing.
Meals on Wheels recipients were charged a $6.50 fee for their meals and the organisation received a subsidy from Home and Community Care towards operating and production costs. However, Mr Ogg said they still relied heavily on fundraising and community donations to keep the service running smoothly and kitchen equipment maintained and updated. He said 95 per cent of their clients were on fixed incomes and the service managed to fundraise about $90,000 a year, which helped subsidise the cost of meals. For information about becoming a volunteer with Meals on Wheels Maroochydore, phone (07) 5443 3246.

The history of the all-you-can-eat buffet dates back as far as the middle of the 16th century but has since become a widely used, and enjoyed, concept. It was with this in mind that the team in the Events Centre @ Maroochy RSL formulated the idea of hosting a range of buffets throughout the week that catered to a variety of audiences. Events Head Chef, Ulli Rabsch, said “it was important that we catered to a wide variety of tastes with the Sunshine Coast population being so multi-cultural.” The end result was three buffets, all distinctively different in what they offer. “Every Friday night is our pasta night,” said Ulli. “We offer a variety of different pastas, along with a selection of sauces to accompany them. Patrons can then mix and match which pasta they have with their favourite sauce.” Saturday night on Level 1 of Maroochy RSL is fast becoming famous for all the family favourites on offer. “We offer a variety of dishes, which change from week to week and offer a wide variety of choices from all over the world. All in one week you might have the classic Chinese dish of Sweet and Sour Pork, alongside the English’s Shepherd’s Pie and the classic French dish Beef Bourguignon,” said Ulli.

“A seafood buffet when you live on the Sunshine Coast is a must,” said Ulli. “With all the fresh local produce available, it was imperative that we took advantage of it.” “The seafood buffet has proved extremely popular already, with bookings reaching capacity two weeks prior to the event.” Two months after they first commenced, all three buffets are now better value for patrons with a Maroochy RSL member’s price on offer and a discounted price for children under the age of 12. See left for more information on the buffets. Alternative meals for children are available upon request. Bookings are recommended for all buffets and can be made by contacting reception on (07) 5443 2211, or online at www.maroochyrsl.com.au.

Summer brings a change t o Eating Out @ Maroochy RSL
Coffee on First
As the weather heats up, why not take advantage of the summer holidays and lap up the air conditioning while sampling a treat or two off the new Coffee on First menu. Perfect for the summer weather are the new range of burgers including the Barramundi Burger with a fresh piece on grilled barramundi and whole egg mayonnaise on freshly baked Turkish bread. And why not try a new twist on an old favourite, the chicken burger and add bacon. Executive Chef, Brett McRae, wanted to create a new summer menu that truly represented what summer means on the Sunshine Coast. “That means crisp salads using local produce and dishes that take advantage of the benefits of living on the Sunshine Coast, with freshly caught seafood and succulent cuts of meat,” said Brett. The menu still contains some old favourites as well, including a range of salads, cooked breakfast items and the S.B.L.T sandwich. Something new at Coffee on First is the range of cookies now available. Ranging from $1.75 to $2 a piece, the cookies are perfect for a small treat with a coffee or a small gift for someone special.
Michelle Houghton, Coffee on First Supervisor with the new range of cookies now available
“We have found patrons quite often choosing a cookie as a small gift for their loved one at home, or a pick-me-up treat for their co-worker back in the office,” said Michelle Houghton, Coffee on First Supervisor. “The cookies have been available for two months now, and we have already had to expand the range to cater for the demand. The most popular have definitely proved to be some old favourites including Chocolate Chip, the gluten-free Florentine and the Melting Moment.” Coffee on First is open 9am till late 7 days a week. Drop in today to sample the new menu – just make sure you leave enough room for a cookie!

‘Recognise and reward’ is a term that has become very familiar to the staff of Maroochy RSL over the last three months. Membership Coordinator Angela Balke in the membership lounge
‘Recognise and reward’ has become the new staff mantra upon the launch of the Maroochy RSL Star Rewards Loyalty Program. Membership Coordinator, Angela Balke, believes that the tiered loyalty program has been well received by Maroochy RSL members, providing them with extra rewards when they use their membership card for bar and bistro purchases, or when playing the gaming machines.
650,000 points simply by ensuring they hand their membership card over when purchasing food or beverages, or playing the gaming machines,” said Angela. As I tell our members “there is a minimum of one jackpot every day and you just never know when it will go off and when it will be your turn to win!”
“Every time members use their membership card within the club, they earn Star Rewards Points which they can spend throughout the club.”
Members who use their card throughout the club while they enjoy the facilities also receive automatic entries into the $10,000 Major Cash Draws, with up to six winners drawn every quarter.
“The advantage with the program is that our members are now receiving more rewards for enjoying the club’s facilities just as they always have,” said Angela.
Membership at Maroochy RSL is very affordable, at only $5.50 per year or $16.50 for 5 years. An added benefit is Maroochy RSL members also receive membership to its partner club, The Swan Bowls.
Star Rewards Points may be used to purchase food and beverages within the club, with members receiving a discount of between 10-50% when paying with Star Rewards Points.
Members also receive added benefits such as the Birthday Bonus, and member-only prices for nominated dining events, bottle shop purchases and Maroochy RSL merchandise.
Another benefit of the loyalty program is the Mega and Major Point Jackpots. The daily jackpots, result in members having more opportunities to win anywhere between 10,000 to 250,000 Star Reward Points.
For more information on any of the benefits of being a member at Maroochy RSL and The Swan Bowls Club, or to become a member, please see Angela in the Membership Lounge, located to the left of the club’s reception area.

James Johnston returns to The Avenue for a free performance After performances in September and November proved popular, James Johnston is returning to the Avenue stage. Accompanied by long-time friend and session musician Chad Haydon, together they form the James Johnston Duo performing a dynamic acoustic cover set along with a mix of original material. In early 2010, in conjunction with the production of his single, Rollercoaster, James made the decision to form the duo and take the experience gained through his 2009 Australian Idol journey on the road. Since finishing third place on the Logie award-winning reality singing program, James became even more determined to make music his life. When he finished school in 2008 he made a pact with himself that he would devote a year to music. “I set out to see if I had the chops to make it in the industry”, said James. Playing gigs and busking to make ends meet, James was living week to week but still able to make ends meet. It was then that the Australian Idol opportunity became a reality and proved is that James has what it takes to succeed in the Australian music industry. The rollercoaster that is Australian Idol provided him with the exposure he needed to start making James Johnston a household name.

Giving himself a year to make the most of the reality spotlight, James got to work. He now thankfully concedes that “with all the exposure, I can keep doing this going for longer than just this year and see where it takes me”.

And while success is sweet for James now, his experiences as a working musician haven’t always been a bed of roses. “I think a lot of people get caught up and just want stardom straight off,” he observes. “But I’ve done gigs where they’ve told me to go home half way through the night because there’s not one single person in the place. I’ve realised that’s the reality of it and it just doesn’t come easy. You’ve just got to keep sticking with it”. James has recently started writing his own songs, stating “It’s one of my favourite things about music because it’s just you - it’s an expression of yourself, and it’s just really great to have your own creation”. You can see the James Johnston Duo perform these original creations and a mix of covers in a free performance live on The Avenue on Wednesday January 19, at 7pm.

The Swan Bowls Club Report
Peter Jervis,
While others throw a few ingredients together so they don’t go hungry, Ryan sets out to create a taste sensation that people will remember.
The Swan Manager
Hello again from The Swan Bowls Club, December is always a busy month here at The Swan Bowls Club. If you haven’t booked your Christmas party yet why not consider barefoot bowls for something fun? There are still bookings available. Please contact our bowls manager, Barry Sullivan, on (07) 5443 1370 if you are interested. Through December we will again be adding our famous hams and turkeys to the Wednesday and Friday night raffles. Tickets will be on sale from 5.45pm, with the draw starting at 6.45pm. Quando Duo will again be performing this New Years Eve. Book your table to enjoy a great meal and see in the new year with us. Our regular Friday night meal specials make it a fun and affordable night out. The Swan Summer Bowls Carnival is also on again this year, running from December 21 through to January 5. The total prize money is $6700, with the two feature events being the $3000 Men’s Pairs on January 2 and 3, and the $1000 Mixed Pairs on December 29. Please contact Barry Sullivan on (07) 5443 1370 to enter or for more information. Finally, staff and management at The Swan Bowls Club would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. We hope we see you soon at The Swan Bowls Club.

And a key component for The Swan Bowls Club’s head chef is keeping everything fresh. Since taking the position 18 months ago he has increased the fresh food component in the restaurant by up to 95 per cent. “Fresh food is imperative for me,” Ryan said. “Gone are the days when bowls clubs are only known for roasts of the day and frozen food. We’re really trying to push local and fresh food,” he said. A new menu has been introduced, packed with variety and featuring items such as fresh fish of the day, crispy battered soft shell crab and salmon roulade salad as well as a variety of daily specials. “I love doing new things and pushing the envelope,” he says. “I also make all of our desserts fresh and from scratch on site. We have crème brulees, panna cotta and bread and butter pudding.” But it is not just the menu that has had a revamp – Ryan has also breathed fresh life into the place with new decor and aesthetics and the addition of an integrated coffee shop. The 32-year-old did his apprenticeship in the Hunter Valley, where he grew up and worked in a variety of establishments before moving to the Sunshine Coast, including the Exchange Hotel in Newcastle and the Kurrajong Restaurants at Cessnock and the Blue Mountains. He also ran an al a carte restaurant in Griffith, where he was head chef by the age of 24 and went on to the Griffith Leagues Club, where he was head chef for three years. Ryan was sous chef at Mooloolaba Surf Club before moving to The Swan Bowls Club, where he has a staff of six to help prepare the meals. There might have been a few changes, but the Swan is still a great place for value with “cheap nights” still on offer on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
