Summer edition 2011/12 Complimentary
Enjoy Summer dining and entertainment at Maroochy RSL
The Christmas season is here again, for many of us it is our favourite time of the year. It is a season to have a rest off work, spend quality time with our loved ones, our family and friends. It is a season to be joyful, to be grateful, to be happy. We hope you enjoy this Summer edition of Backstage, which includes community articles, a big calendar of events, free entertainment, great meal specials and fun-filled activities for the kids. Also visit our website www.maroochyrsl.com.au for further information on all the exciting experiences on offer. We have again this year been able to offer our help to the Sunshine Coast community. During 2011, Maroochy RSL has maintained its generous support of the local community with more than 60 different clubs and organisations benefiting from Maroochy RSL sponsorships and donations. Christmas is also an ideal time to express love and good wishes for those we care about. For a stress free meal, catch up with family and friends at Infusion Bistro and enjoy our Chef’s Christmas meal available for lunch and dinner from 19 - 24 December (for more information refer to page 16). New Year’s Eve 2011 promises to be even bigger and better than last year. There is so much to choose from at Maroochy RSL. Enjoy free live entertainment, a delicious menu and cocktails upstairs in Elevations Bar from 5.00pm, or alternatively join us for dinner at Infusion Bistro, and then dance the night away on The Avenue to The Funsters. The kids can also have their own NYE celebration in Mystery Island (open from 10am to 10pm). We encourage you and your family to enjoy the holiday period responsibly, so while visiting the club take advantage of our designated driver program and courtesy buses. The Members of the Board, management and staff would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support throughout the year and to wish all our members a joyous and safe festive season. We look forward to welcoming you into the club in the new year.
Welcome to the Summer edition of Backstage. I hope you and your families have enjoyed the activities over the last couple of months. Over the course of 2011, the Club conducted an internal audit of our energy efficiency including electricity, water, and waste; with the primary focus of sustainability. By improving our energy efficiency and implementing new systems we were able to reduce costs and our environmental footprint. Also dining out at Maroochy RSL means more than enjoying a first class meal, you can also feel satisfied knowing that you are supporting our region’s local food producers, growers and suppliers and in turn directly supporting the local Sunshine Coast economy. In addition, using local suppliers reduces food miles and lowers carbon emissions. Maroochy RSL has been financially supporting the Swan Bowl Club for several years. In the interest of our members we could not continue to support the significant loss, therefore the decision was made to close the Swan Bowls Club at the end of October 2011. I can assure you that we have not made this decision lightly. Maroochy RSL’s main focus is to ensure the merger of the Swan Bowls Club members and Club Maroochy Beach is a smooth transition and members are accommodated at their new location. We believe merging the two clubs together will provide a positive, working solution and will create one strong club that has a healthy membership base and financial support to move forward. The Christmas Major Cash Draw will be drawn on Wednesday December 21 at 7.30pm, where six lucky members will win a share in $10,000 cash. By inserting your membership card while playing the gaming machines, or swiping your membership card when purchasing food or beverages, you accumulate entries that are automatically entered into the promotional barrel. Remember you have until Wednesday 21st December to collect more entries and you must be present at the draw for your chance to win. Don’t forget that you have until December 31 to renew your membership and receive your entry into the Renewal Draw to win one of five 42” Panasonic Full HD LCD TVs valued at $1,199rrp. For more details about this draw and our other Member Spectacular Draws refer to page 18. Maroochy RSL has something for all the family, especially the kids. Why not bring them down to Mystery Island. There are loads of activities happening throughout January to keep the kids occupied during school holidays. We have a beach party, an outback party and a back-to-school party, just to name a few. Refer to page 7 for a list of Mystery Island events or download your own activity calendar at www.maroochyrsl.com.au/mystery-island.
We wish you a happy and safe Christmas 2 backstage
We have a great line-up of entertainment over the coming months including cabaret, swing, rock and tribute bands. There is something for everyone, for a full list of our free entertainment refer to page 15. Another year is about to draw to a close and we wonder where the time has gone. On behalf of our amazing staff, I would like to wish you and your families a happy and safe Christmas period.

Delivers the importance of Remembrance Day to all schools and families. At 11.00am on the 11th of November, Queensland School children remembered those who fought for our freedom by reading a particular story. Read2Remember, an initiative of SunnyKids, is helping our younger generation reflect on those who fought for their freedom, by remembering their bravery, mateship and humour, thorough literature and learning. Maroochy RSL in conjunction with Hot 91.1 was proud to support Read2Remember. It was an engaging event using creativity and education to emphasise the importance of Remembrance Day in a positive and progressive way.

Supporting Local Businesses Dining out at Maroochy RSL means more than enjoying a first class meal, you can also feel satisfied knowing that you are supporting our region’s local food producers, growers and suppliers and in turn directly supporting the local Sunshine Coast economy. Maroochy RSL has a great track record for promoting the benefits of sourcing and using local produce for their catering needs and for many years has prioritized buying locally. Executive Chef Brett McRae explains that although the cost of buying fresh local produce can sometimes be slightly higher than cheaper imports, it also guarantees freshness and quality and builds stronger relationships with local people who know the local market best. “Obviously most local suppliers do not have the bulk buying power of large corporations, however they often have a superior product and it is the quality of the produce that sets them apart. I am dedicated to serving the best food available, and for us that means buying local wherever we can so we can confidently be sure where it came from and that it was caught or picked at its best.” Brett says there are many other benefits that come from using local suppliers and customers are becoming much more aware of it too - such as reducing food miles and lowering carbon emissions.
4 backstage
“It’s simple – when you source produce locally the food has to travel less, so you’re responsible for lower carbon emissions from transportation and the food is better because it tastes fresh. There is no need to tamper with the natural state of the produce because it does not need to ‘last longer’ than intended,” he says. This strong focus on the ecological, social and economic benefits of sourcing locally is just another way that the Club can demonstrate its commitment to our local community. Quite simply, buying local is a positive way to stimulate the local economy, promote the best of local suppliers and keep friends in jobs Brett says. Maroochy RSL has been buying local produce for more than 15 years and currently sources over 50% of its food needs, including milk, meat, seafood, fruit and vegetables, bread and some of their cakes from local Sunshine Coast suppliers. They also use a local advertising agency and print all of their promotional materials on the Sunshine Coast. We invite you to come in and taste the difference for yourself, Infusion Bistro is open daily from midday for lunch and dinner.

Our Community During 2011, Maroochy RSL has maintained its generous support of the local community with more than 60 different clubs and organisations benefiting from Maroochy RSL sponsorships and donations. So far this year the club has distributed more than $360,000 in cash and in-kind to local Sunshine Coast community and sporting groups. We look forward to continue helping Sunshine Coast clubs maintain their facilities, raise funds for charities and provide sponsorship for various sporting clubs. Apart from seeing happy members and visitors at the club, it is one of the most rewarding facets of being central to the Sunshine Coast community.

Queensland Snooker Championship Dawn Richmond is a woman with an unusual passion and she and her team mates literally lined up for the Dr Clem Jones Qld Open Snooker Championship at Maroochy RSL in November.
“We had the RSL set up so people could come and watch – snooker is a great game and very fast-moving, so I think people should take the opportunity to get involved.”
The 2011 Qld Open was played at Bribie and Maroochy RSL from Friday November 11. The tournament saw 54 players, including 16 players travel from interstate, go head-to-head over 3 gruelling days of competition, with the semi-final and final taking place at Bribie on Sunday November 13th.
The Dr Clem Jones Qld Open Championship started on Friday November 11 at midday with Maroochy RSL matches concluding on Saturday evening. The top half of players then competed at the Bribie Island venue and the bottom half draw competed at Maroochydore. Both the Semi-final and Final were played at Bribie Island.
It seems that playing snooker is on a comeback to popularity, especially on the Sunshine Coast which has grown to a new level in the past few years. The Maroochy Snooker Club attracts a wide range of ages and Dawn fondly refers to the younger players as “reformed 8 ball players”. “It has been great that we have attracted younger members, however it has been a bit of an education for them,” she says. “Many of them are pub pool players and we need to teach them the rules and etiquette of snooker in the club environment – snooker is a game where you have to use your wits to outsmart your opponent.” Dawn was excited about the championship and said it was a great opportunity for the public to come and see what snooker is all about.
6 backstage
The Maroochy Snooker Club has six registered referees, who are qualified to referee at big tournaments anywhere in Australia. The Club also has five accredited coaches and free coaching is available to anyone who would like to learn the finer details of the sport. A social night is held every Thursday night and all visitors are welcome but they must become club members after three nights. Membership is just $5.50 per year. If you have ever pondered your snooker ability or just want to see what it is all about head down to the Maroochy RSL. For more information call Dawn Richmond on 5448 4802.

Coffee on First puts Local Dairy Farmers First Sunshine Coast coffee lovers are guaranteed the frothiest cappuccino in town when they visit Coffee on First, with the cafĂŠ recently switching to locally produced milk brand, Lynward Queensland Milk. Kenilworth farmer Graham MacIntyre was battling to keep his family dairy farm going so late last year he struck out against the big brands and crippling supermarket prices to launch his own brand of milk – and it’s already winning over locals. The fledgling company is relying on local support to help keep his farm busy and in turn support the Queensland dairy industry. Mr MacIntyre says many Coast residents prefer his whole milk straight from the cow, and not only is the milk better for you but it tastes better too. Maroochy RSL’s busy cafĂŠ, Coffee on First is dedicated to supporting the local community and using local suppliers wherever possible, and now that there is a local milk brand available the decision to switch was easy, says Executive Chef, Brett McRae. “It’s very rewarding to use local suppliers and help sustain the local farming economy. Having a local dairy option is great for us and for our customers as it means we can provide a superior product for them while contributing directly to our community.â€? If you are a coffee enthusiast or love a well-made milkshake then come and visit Coffee on First and enjoy the taste of supporting your local dairy farmer! Coffee on First is open every week from Monday to Friday from 9.00am and from 8.00am on Saturday and Sunday.
