Maroochy RSL & The Swan Bowls Club

Winter edition 2011 Complimentary

In March, the Maroochy RSL Annual General Meeting was held and a new Board of Directors was elected. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Len Thompson who stepped into the role of Chairman in September 2010 and has provided outstanding support for the Club, its management and staff.

Maroochy RSL has become a meeting place for friends and family. It is a destination for young and old alike, where laughter and life are things witnessed on a daily basis. Over the Winter months we have a big calendar of events coming up, enjoy free entertainment, great food and fun activities for the kids in Mystery Island.

After a challenging first six months with record rain, flooding, cyclones and bush fires, our prayers and thoughts are with all Australians, particularly members of our club, who have been affected by these disasters. In addition, our thoughts go out to our neighbours in New Zealand and Japan who have suffered great loss from recent earthquakes and tsunamis.

We would like to thank you for your contribution to the fountain funds (in the foyer of the Maroochy RSL). They have provided much-needed support to the Queensland Disaster Relief Appeal. The clean-up will continue for some time and our thoughts remain with all those impacted.

In April, Vice President Len Thompson hired a trailer and drove 1500km to deliver much-needed furniture to cyclone ravaged Cardwell RSL. Most of the damage to the club and surrounds caused by cyclone Yasi has already been repaired by voluntary labour provided by members and the community, however the club was desperate for replacement furniture and the items donated by Maroochy RSL were graciously received. We are passionate about giving back to the community. Throughout the year the club supports many local organisations, not for profit groups and events by way of sponsorships and donations. As one of our valued members, you can feel proud to be a part of this achievement. Recently Maroochy RSL was able to make a difference to some very special local families and children by donating $43,000 raised from regular Bingo sessions and Saturday raffles in the club to support the Sunshine Coast Children’s Therapy Centre at Nambour. The not-forprofit centre helps more than 80 Sunshine Coast families by providing therapy services to babies and children with moderate to severe physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities. To read more about this special organisation and the fantastic support they provide refer to page 4. Many of our members are reaping the rewards from the Star Rewards Loyalty Program. Use your card as often as you can to receive great discounts, earn Star Reward Points, a chance to win the Mega Jackpot, and automatic entries into the $10,000 Major Cash Draw. We invite you to attend the Major $10,000 Cash Draw on Wednesday the 8th June where there are even more chances to win with six draws. It is a tremendous evening and everyone has loads of fun. To make a night of it, remember to book your table for the Family Favourites Buffet on Level 1, simply visit www.maroochyrsl.com.au, go to ‘What’s on’ and click on ’Make a reservation’. We look forward to welcoming you to Maroochy RSL.

Donation Helps Special Needs Kids Maroochy RSL was delighted to be able to make a difference to some very special local families and children by donating $43,000 raised from regular Bingo sessions and Saturday raffles in the club to support the Sunshine Coast Children’s Therapy Centre at Nambour.

and Gympie/Cooloola regions were able to attend the centre for therapy. The Centre’s 15 staff and many parents are excited about the club’s support and hosted a celebratory morning tea to thank Maroochy RSL staff and members who raised the funds.

The not-for-profit Centre helps more than 80 Coast families by providing therapy services to babies and children with moderate to severe physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities. Marketing Manager, Clare Paton, said the Centre plans to use the much needed funds for work on its building and to upgrade its onsite storage. The club has previously donated $22,000 for the Centre’s building fund, creating extra space and an additional therapy room so that more families from throughout the Sunshine Coast

Children are the Ultimate Winners Children are the ultimate winners in a $43,000 donation from Maroochy RSL to the Sunshine Coast Children’s Therapy Centre at Nambour.

“We’re really excited about Maroochy RSL’s donation as it will mean we’ll get a new outdoor therapy centre, which is much needed and will be a valuable addition to the centre.”

And Peregian mother of three Karra Pepper is thrilled with the generosity of the club and its patrons.

The Centre provides therapy to children with moderate to severe physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities.

Karra’s 22-month-old daughter Hayley has been receiving physio, speech and occupational therapy at the centre for a year. “We’ve been so blessed with the support the therapy centre has provided Hayley and our family,” she said.

social golf The number 32 is a special number for the Maroochy RSL and Ex Services Social Golf Club. Now in its 32nd year of operation and with 32 active members, the club is looking forward to another 32 years of playing social golf with like-minded people across the Sunshine Coast. The social golf interclub meets and plays at different clubs every second Sunday. They play on a variety of clubs, across Noosa to Caloundra and at times inland as far as Woodford. As well as their fortnightly games, the club also organizes golfing trips up to Tin Can Bay once or twice a year and annual weekend trips away to a new golf course. Club secretary and treasurer Ross Finley said the club was a great way to meet like-minded people from across the community, who all enjoy a social game of golf. “We’re not really serious golfers, but a group that gets together to enjoy the game and the variety of golf courses that you don’t get when you are a member at a single club,” Ross said. “We have a mixed group of members – female and male – and members in their early 20s to members in their 70s.”

“We also have a summer and winter cup during the year. It’s a great club, and it’s a great way to get out and about.” The cost of membership and the games are very reasonable with the discounts from group bookings passed on to the members. The club also holds fortnightly raffles through the Maroochy RSL to subsidize the costs of games, to ensure the fees stay relatively low for members. “We’re generally a popular option for people who want to play a game of golf regularly, but don’t want to pay for membership at one set golf club,” Ross said. “I urge anyone wanting to get out and meet people, play cheaper golf and try the many courses on the Coast, to join our club.” “We’re always looking for new members to join our great club.” To enquire about membership of the Maroochy RSL Social Golf Interclub, send an e-mail to MaroochyRSLGolf@gmail. com or call our Secretary Ross Finley on (07) 5451 1027 or the President Phil Cairney on (07) 5456 2143.

“We do play off a handicap and hold an annual competition over two weekends around August.”

“We have a mixed group of members female and male - and members in their early 20s to members in their 70s.”

Helping our

CaRdwell Cousins After hearing how the small tropical coastal town Cardwell was devastated by February’s Cyclone Yasi, Maroochy RSL instantly got on the phone to see how they could help.

“The items donated by Maroochy RSL were graciously received and the president was overwhelmed with the sight of the furniture we delivered.”

The Cardwell RSL, a small community club, suffered severe damage during the cyclone and were in desperate need for new furniture. Upon hearing this, Maroochy RSL offered up to $15,000 worth of furniture and goods to be donated to the club, located in north-eastern Queensland.

Despite the community’s best efforts in restoring the coastal community, Mr Thompson said it was sad to see the state of the town.

Maroochy RSL chairman Len Thompson volunteered to drive the 1450km round trip to personally deliver the much-needed furniture to the struggling club. After a two day trip, Len arrived at Cardwell late one night with furniture comprising of bar tables, bar stools and a board table, all in very good condition. “Although it was dark, it was abundantly clear, even after two months had passed, that Cylcone Yasi caused massive, widespread damage to the people and property of Cardwell,” Mr Thompson said. “Most of the damage to the club and surrounds, caused by Yasi, has already been repaired by voluntary labour provided by members and the community; however the club was desperate for replacement furniture.”

“While a lot of restoration work, subsequent to Yasi, has been carried out, a huge task remains to repair and/or rebuild private residences and commercial properties throughout the area,” he said. “The owner of the motel where we stayed estimated that the cost of repairs necessary at the motel would be in the vicinity of three million dollars.” “About 75% of the commercial premises in the Cardwell main street are either closed or partially operating under extreme circumstances.” “It is sad to witness the catastrophic damage caused by Yasi but, at the same time, it is very heartening to see the stamina and “get up and go” attitude of the Cardwell people.” “The overall task of transporting much needed furniture, donated by Maroochy RSL Club, to Cardwell RSL Club, was an honour and a pleasure.”

In Memory of Carol Chatfield Carol, It’s time for us to say goodbye It’s time for us to part Thank you for being our special friend You will always live in our heart God Bless

Jimbour Station Merlot Queensland wine made from grapes selected from three vineyards. Jimbour Station Merlot is a medium bodied dry red varietal with a lively and fresh fruit aroma

Peter Lehmann Shiraz Grenache Shiraz and Grenache make perfect wine partners – blended together they each bring varietal qualities which create a deliciously enjoyable wine perfect for drinking as a young wine. Grenache gives the rich, full bodied Shiraz a delightful softness and elegance, producing a wine more medium bodied in style

Barossa Belle Semillon Sauvignon Blanc It is easy to love good Barossa Semillon, it has wonderful fresh grassy fruit aromas with soft caramel fudge and orange zest. The Sauvignon Blanc element may be small in this wine, but it is appropriate and it adds a second dimension to the palate which in turn creates a wine that exceeds its value and is brilliant to drink backstage 11

safety matters Late last year Maroochy RSL was recognised with a gold award for the 2010 Sunshine Coast Safer Venues Program. The program was an initiative of Queensland Health and DRUG-ARM and was supported by the CALM Sunshine Coast liquor accord. The CALM (Collaborative Approach to Liquor Management) liquor accord is a joint initiative that brings together state and local government agencies along with many community groups concerned with the responsible management of liquor. Maroochy RSL’s compliance officer, Michele Hawes (pictured right), has been the compliance officer role for four years and has to know the inner workings of every job within the RSL. “Generally, my job is to ensure that while the club stays enjoyable for members and guests, it stays safe and is in line with regulations,” Michele said. The RSL complies with legislation from many organisations including the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation, Queensland Health and Sunshine Coast Council. There are frequent changes and Michele has to stay on top of them at all times and even initiate plans that will be implemented if something is introduced in the future. “Another part of my job is to be an active member of the Maroochy Liquor Accord,” she said. Other initiatives include the regular courtesy buses for members and guests, a secure car park where people can leave their car locked up if they have a drink and can’t drive, and a breathalyser machine installed in the foyer. All play a part in making Maroochy RSL a responsible club and a safe venue for patrons and staff.
