Maroochy RSL

Winter edition 2012 Complimentary

Enjoy Winter dining and entertainment at Maroochy RSL

On behalf of the Maroochy RSL Board of Directors, welcome to the Winter edition of Backstage. You are no doubt aware that the Club members have voted to merge with their Sub Branch, thereby returning to a position they were decades ago. The original separation was the result of licensing requirements for both liquor and gaming, and the recombining of the two entities (Club and Sub Branch) is the sensible path to follow with the introduction of new legislation for Clubs such as ours. It is an exciting time for the Club and we are pleased to announce that the amalgamation is well on track. As part of the amalgamation process, this edition of Backstage will include additional Sub Branch information and key dates. Please refer to pages 24 and 25 for meeting times and contact information. Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch is proud to celebrate a significant milestone, for 80 years it has been providing invaluable service to veterans, ex-servicemen and women and their families. They have made an outstanding contribution to members and the local community which epitomises the sacrifices of those who served in the defence of the nation and in the traditions of the ANZACs – mateship, courage, loyalty and sacrifice – values on which our RSL and services clubs were founded. To read more about our beginnings refer to page 7. Throughout the year Maroochy RSL supports many local organisations, not for profit groups and events by way of sponsorships and donations. So far this year we have donated over $265,000 to local community groups. As one of our valued members, you can feel proud to be a part of this achievement and share our passion about giving back to the community. We have received positive feedback from our members, that this Club is safe, friendly and a place where they can come and enjoy themselves. There is a lot planned for the coming months throughout the club. We hope you enjoy the great dining and club activities on offer.

Welcome to the Winter edition of Backstage. Over the cooler months we have a big calendar of events to keep you entertained, including some great tribute shows and Sunday cabarets. We are a family-friendly club so it’s especially important for us to help our members have a great time over the school holidays. Keeping the kids entertained on school holidays can be a tricky task. In addition to Mystery Island Kids Club activities, we will host A Night at the Zoo, Kids Dress-Up Party during the school holidays. The key feature of the party will be a children’s disco, set to the live music of one of south east Queensland’s best cover acts The Zookeepers. The night’s young zoo guests are guaranteed to go wild on the dance floor thanks to the band’s modern jive spin on Top 40 hits. There will also be face painting and balloon artistry, for more details refer to page 4. As part of our Winter celebrations we are encouraging existing members to bring along a non-member to join up. For every friend you successfully refer, you and your mate will get an entry into the draw to win one of two new Panasonic 42” LCD HD TVs. To find out more refer to page 19. Our members are reaping the rewards from the Star Rewards Loyalty Program. Use your card as often as you can to receive great discounts, earn Star Reward Points and automatic entries into the Major Draws. Another great advantage of being a member of Maroochy RSL is that you can enjoy local business discounts simply by presenting your membership card. On page 22 there is a list of our business partners and discounts offered. Escape the Winter chills and pop into Infusion Bistro or Coffee on First for a great range of Winter meals, and our new range of weekly specials. Coffee on First is celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a High Tea on Monday 11th June, including a fine selection of ribbon sandwiches, delicate pastries and delectable cakes. In addition, Infusion Bistro is hosting Christmas in July, so gather your family and friends to enjoy a mid-winter feast. For more information refer to page 20. With six State of Origin series wins in a row, will Queensland be able to make it seven years running? Wear your team colours, catch up with mates and enjoy the State of Origin on the big screen in Heroes Sports Bar (Game 2 - 13 June, Game 3 - 4 July). To find out how to win the Maroochy RSL VIP Experience refer to page 17. During the London Olympics we will have a host of fun activities for both young and old. Queensland Milk… Nice Truck! It has only been six months since Kenilworth farmer Graham MacIntyre made the bold move to stand up for Queensland’s dairy industry. His pioneering company Lynward Queensland Milk has already become a house-hold name, with production skyrocketing from 1,000 litres to 10,000 a week. “It has been really hard starting out on our own but we are starting to see the light now,” Mr MacIntyre said. “All the dairy farmers are encouraging it, everyone has been supportive and now you can see us on the road six days a week.” The Maroochy RSL has been featured on the milk trucks, bearing the catchy slogan, “We do Queensland Milk so well for Maroochy RSL”.

Maroochy RSL General Manager Harvey Fewings said the milk was used for all products produced in the club’s kitchen and cafe.

Mr MacIntyre said the club was one of the first businesses to stock his milk and its support had caused a “domino effect” in the local industry.

“We are a local business who wants to support the local industry and help local farmers get one back from the supermarket giants,” Mr Fewings said.

“Word of mouth spreads quickly, especially when the product is used in the biggest RSL on the Coast,” he said.

“We have a lot to offer on the Sunshine Coast for local industry, we just need more businesses to take advantage of that.”

“We have been taking on a lot of new clients daily - it is a great feeling.”

Graham kindly donated 90 litres of Queensland Milk for the diggers ANZAC day breakfast at the Club.

Keeping Kids Entertained Keeping the kids entertained on school holidays can be a tricky task but Maroochy RSL rises to the challenge.

The club prides itself on being family-friendly year-round and this is best demonstrated by Mystery Island.

The Club will host A Night at the Zoo Kids Dress-Up Party during the upcoming term two break to complement the venue’s regular children’s facilities and events.

The fully supervised kids club caters for 4 to 17-year-olds and includes a pirate ship and cove, mini cinema, arts and crafts and Playstation, Wii and Xbox.

“We are first and foremost a family-friendly club so it’s especially important for us to help our members have a great time over the school holidays,” Maroochy RSL General Manager Harvey Fewings says.

Junior membership to Maroochy RSL is $5 per calendar year. Entry into Mystery Island is $2.50 for members and $4.50 for nonmembers.

“It can be hard to find things to do with the kids and we like to think we help parents solve that dilemma.” The key feature of the party will be a children’s disco, set to the live music of one of south east Queensland’s best cover acts The Zookeepers. The night’s young zoo guests are guaranteed to go wild on the dance floor thanks to the band’s modern jive spin on Top 40 hits. The Zookeepers are also renowned for keeping their gigs fun, enhanced by their own penchant for donning fancy dress on stage. There will also be party games, prizes for best dressed, face painting and a balloon artist working his magic for the young crowd. “We always get a fantastic response from both the kids and their parents when we’ve put on these kinds of events in the past,” Harvey says. “Our international magic show, masquerade ball and zoo, pirate and princess dress-up parties have all been outstanding successes.” 4 backstage

Maroochy RSL also lets kids eat free with every paying adult on Wednesday nights. “The feedback we always get from mums and dads is that we tick all the right boxes,” Harvey says. “The club makes their entire family feel welcome and the parents can enjoy a relaxing and inexpensive night out, knowing their kids are also having fun in a safe and secure environment.” A Night at the Zoo Kids Dress-Up Party is on Wednesday, June 27, at 7pm. For more information about the club, visit maroochyrsl.com.au.

Students Big Break into Hospitality Maroochy RSL is fast-tracking a group of Sunshine Coast high schoolers into exciting careers in the club and hospitality industry. Eighteen Year 10, 11 and 12 students have started a new nationally-accredited traineeship program, which consists of paid on-the-job training and a theoretical syllabus. The successful applicants were chosen at a Speed Recruitment Session in February, where candidates had five minutes to win over a panel, made up of six Maroochy RSL managers. “We definitely found what we were looking for,” Maroochy RSL General Manager Harvey Fewings said. “We were looking for young adults who have great attitudes, possess initiative, are well-presented and are driven to do well in this industry. The trainees are predominantly from Maroochydore, Mountain Creek and Nambour State High Schools. “As a not-for-profit club, it’s important to us to provide the Sunshine Coast’s young population with career opportunities and so this program is the perfect fit,” Mr Fewings said. “It will give the students the confidence and commercial skills they need to make it in a competitive industry.” With their induction completed, the trainees currently spend one day a week at the club and learn theory at school, facilitated by Club Training Australia. They will graduate with a Hospitality Certificate III. “They’re all very enthusiastic and willing to learn so it’s been great welcoming them to the team,” Mr Fewings said.

Club Training Australia is running the 12-month program on behalf of Maroochy RSL. Club Training Australia is rolling out the program across the country and this is the first of its size for the Sunshine Coast. “The trainees will be in the unique and fortunate position of being in paid employment, earning a qualification and still continuing their secondary education,” Club Training Australia National Business Solution Manager, Bill Alexion said. “But it’s also broader than that. We’re proud to be helping the younger generation of Australia and to be fostering community partnerships between the youth and club industry.”

The Carbon Tax Comments by General Manager: Harvey Fewings

We don’t want to do this – but we simply have no choice!

Much has been said about the Carbon Tax. And, a great deal of what has been said is nonsense!

All of the food and beverage products which we purchase for sale in our Club will include a Carbon Tax component which will be reflected in our prices.

Essentially, the Carbon Tax is a punitive tax, designed to create a change in behaviour, by applying financial penalties on the consumption of products manufactured or generated by processes that cause major gas emissions into the atmosphere. The Carbon Tax particularly applies to the generation of electricity and, this Club, uses a great deal of electricity. We have conducted power audits, we have replaced light bulbs and we have regulated our air conditioning systems, we have even instituted “Light Bulb Police” to switch off lights that do not need to be on all the time. But, we can only do what is sensible and practicable. Our preliminary investigations indicate that the fundamental operating costs of our Club are likely to increase by an estimated 5% once this tax is applied. To remain a viable business we must apply these additional costs to the food and beverage sectors of our business.

We shall make it very clear, to all our members and patrons, just what component of the price you pay is related to the Carbon Tax. We shall do this by Public Notice within the Club and we are exploring ways of showing the Carbon Tax on our Till Screens and receipts so that you know exactly what you are buying.

Bowls Bumper Start

Big-hearted Bingo

Following the amalgamation of two of the Sunshine Coast’s oldest bowls clubs late last year, Club Maroochy has experienced a bumper start to the year and is working towards becoming the largest club within the region. Club Maroochy is a new club, which encompasses Swan Bowls Club and Maroochydore Beach Bowls Club.

It was a union that was brief but one that is destined to change lives. The Maroochy RSL Club’s Bingo Team was recently proud to hand over a $3000 cheque to the Tour De Cure as it passed through town on its epic journey up the Queensland coast.

Both clubs were struggling financially due to dwindling membership numbers and increasing maintenance costs. In a bid to save both clubs, it was decided to join them and form Club Maroochy, which is now located at the former Maroochydore Beach Bowls Club. The amalgamated club became effective as of January 1, 2012. Prior to the amalgamation, Maroochydore Beach Bowls Club had 175 members. Club Maroochy now has over 460 members, which makes them the second largest club on the Sunshine Coast. Club Maroochy chairman Dale Reynolds said the first three months of trading since the amalgamation have been very positive.

Tour De Cure is an annual bike ride that this year saw 65 volunteers, including two Channel Seven celebrities, cycle 1650km to raise money for 12 cancer research, support and prevention projects. Maroochy RSL’s generous donation was the culmination of two months’ energetic fundraising by its bingo team, co-ordinated by long-time caller Judy Dalgleish. “We like to regularly support charities and the Tour De Cure is a perfect match for us because it’s about all cancers, not just one type,” Mrs Dalgleish explains. “We have a good player mix of both men and women so in the past we have supported breast and prostate cancer campaigns. “The Tour De Cure is a natural progression from that.”

“Typically, January to March is not a great time within the bowls club industry, however we’ve had a very positive and promising start to the year,” Mr Reynolds said.

The cheque was presented to the Tour De Cure team in front of a large crowd, which had turned out to welcome the riders during their brief break in Maroochydore on May 3.

“The amalgamation of the two clubs has been a smooth transition, thanks to the great work of a steering committee and the generous financial support provided by Maroochy RSL.

Mrs Dalgleish says the bingo players, dressed in their trademark bright pink shirts, were ‘tickled pink’ to hand over the money and pose for photos with Sunrise breakfast personalities James Tobin and Mark Beretta.

We have carried out much-needed renovations and put in place a number of key initiatives, which will support the larger numbers. “We gratefully acknowledge the financial, logistical and advisory support of the RSL in helping to make our new club a reality. “I do believe the decision to amalgamate was vital and really the only way to save both of our wonderful clubs.” Maroochy RSL, who owned the Swan Bowls Club, funded the amalgamation through sponsorship and grants. They also donated a large amount of furniture and materials from the former Swans Bowls Club. Maroochy RSL General Manager Harvey Fewings said the successful amalgamation of the two clubs has provided a positive solution resulting in one strong club that has a healthy membership base and financial support to move forward. Club Maroochy is now looking forward to a full 12-month events calendar, which will begin with the upcoming winter carnival prelude in late June. 6 backstage

“We even managed to have an interesting chat with Mark’s dad, who was tremendous,” she says. The money was raised at the Maroochy RSL Club’s regular bingo sessions, through raffle takings and the sale of hundreds of pens featuring the Tour De Cure logo. Bingo is played about six times a week at the club and Wednesday is its biggest session. The Tour De Cure is in its sixth year and has previously raised more than $7 million to achieve its mission of curing cancer. For more information about the event, visit tourdecure.com.au. Celebrating 80 Years Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch plays a significant role in several charity and local community groups. Proud to be celebrating 80 years, they have made an outstanding contribution to members and the local community which epitomises the sacrifices of those who served in the defence of the nation and in the traditions of the ANZACs – mateship, courage, loyalty and sacrifice – values on which our RSL and services clubs were founded. As a progressive community orientated association, Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch provides an invaluable service to veterans, ex-servicemen and women and their families. It is considered to be one of the best in Queensland and with a very high success rate in processing claims on behalf of veterans. Founded eighty years ago, Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch Charter was granted in May 1932. Meetings were first held in private homes, the E.S. & A bank premises, or anywhere else the public was kind enough to make available. The Sub Branch and the Women’s Auxiliary provided a great deal of welfare assistance to veterans and widows of World War 1. In January 1939, application was made to the Lands Department for a grant of land to erect a Soldiers Memorial Hall. In April 1939, the erection of the Memorial Hall was approved for the portion of the land reserved as a Memorial Park (bounded by First and Memorial Avenues and George Street). After completion, activities of both business and social nature continued in the Memorial Hall in a routine manner for some years, focussing mainly on the welfare of veterans and their families.

The Club was later established on the land occupied by the Diggers Memorial Hall. The Maroochydore and District Ex-Servicemen’s Club was officially opened in November 1972 and at that point in time the business activities of the Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch and the Maroochydore and District Ex-Servicemen’s Club were arranged as separate entities, however keeping close relations with each other, which still remain today. The most significant event in the affairs of the Sub Branch was the building of RSL House, Sub Branch headquarters opposite the Club in Memorial Avenue. Alteration to the car-park plans gave up the full section of the ground floor for dedication to Sub Branch occupation with all the facilities required. So ‘RSL House’ was born. This great achievement officially opened in 1996. Among the many benefits which the Sub Branch derived from the establishment of ‘RSL House’ was the setting up of a prestigious Memorabilia Collection ‘preserving for posterity, records of the deeds and sacrifices of our veteran brothers and sisters’. So from the humble beginnings Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch stands strong with its main objectives still on the advocacy and welfare of the veteran community while the preserving our history of those whom fought for our freedom.

A code of mateship is the golden thread which links the members of the Returned and Services League of Australia to their past. That enduring link was forged in 1916 by wounded and disabled ex-servicemen who had returned from the Gallipoli campaign. The simple objective motto of those early pioneers of the League was to ‘look after our mates’. Lindsay Wilson MBE OAM, Keeping the Faith 2006

Jacob’s Creek Pinot Noir

Yellow Tail Shiraz “Spicy, full bodied and delicious” For when you need the biggest weapon in your wine arsenal. A perfect winter warmer and yet surprisingly drinkable all year around. Great with a heap of friends warming their hands around a bonfire.

A medium bodied and well-balanced red wine that is the perfect accompaniment to flavoured food. With flavours of juicy red berry fruits, this rich vibrant wine has fine gentle tannins and a soft silky finish.

This light to medium bodied Pinot Noir displays black cherry and strawberry fruit flavours. Enjoy with lamb chops or rich duck dishes.

Taylors Crooked Horse Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

Jacob’s Creek Pinot Grigio

Yellow Tail Tree-Free Chardonnay

The Italian version of a grape also known as Pinot Gris, which is the French name. Growing in interest as a relatively new variety to Australia. It is medium bodied and well suited for drinking on its own or with many food types, but is particularly suited to seafood.

“Crisp, light and refreshing” Chardonnay is back in vogue and it’s no wonder with a wine like this. The zingy freshness makes TreeFree Chardonnay a real crowd-pleaser. Goes great with upbeat tunes and share-plates with friends.

A smooth, mouth-filling wine that is an ideal accompaniment to aromatic food. This lovely pale coloured wine has subtle citrus and juicy passionfruit flavours and is made for immediate enjoyment.

events centre @ maroochy

Delivering First Class Events From travelling around Australia in a Kombi van with two kids under seven to transforming the events centre at Maroochy RSL, Karen Sliman doesn’t shy away from a challenge. In fact, she revels in it. Since November last year, Karen has taken on the new role of functions manager for the events centre and is already bringing a new flavour to the centre with the addition of new functions, services and a revised system internally. Karen, supported by a wonderful team of five full-time staff and a number of specialist contractors, has a long history of working in the functions and events industry. “Due to our extensive travel around Australia, I have pretty much worked everywhere,” Karen said. “I have always worked in hospitality, training and events industry.” “I really enjoy working with people and events really bring out my organisational and creative side.” “I’m really blessed to work with such a great team here. We’re all very accomplished in what we do and really complement our services to provide our customers with the best event, which not only suits their budget, but theme and goals.” Before coming to Maroochy RSL, Karen worked in the mining industry in Western Australia. “For around ten years, I worked for mining companies as an events coordinator in organising large conferences to training seminars,” she said. “I have worked for several large companies in New South Wales, Western Australia and now Queensland.” Karen moved to the Sunshine Coast with her husband and two children after falling in love with the place during their travels. Originally from the northern beaches of Sydney, Karen always vowed to return back to the Sunshine Coast after finishing their travels. “We have travelled around Australia twice,” Karen said. “The first time we travelled in a Kombi van with a one year old and a seven year old.”

“The second time we travelled with a Pajero and a pop up van and that time with a 13-year-old, we really do deserve a medal,” she laughs. “We had been travelling for only three weeks when we arrived at Cotton Tree Caravan Park. Soon as we landed here, we knew we wanted to stay as we thought it was the most beautiful place in the world.” “But we had only been here for three weeks into our trip and had to keep going. We always vowed we would come back here one day. “And we eventually did – with a ten year stopover in Western Australia in between.” It’s this sense of adventure and fierce determination, which Karen brings to her new role at Maroochy RSL. The renowned events centre has five versatile rooms, the capacity to seat up to 450 guests and a variety of menus designed by our award-winning chefs. Karen said the centre can cater for any event, at any time of the day, including anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas parties and product launches. “I love the versatility of the role,” Karen said. “From marketing, selling, promoting to coordinating events, my organisational skills really come out.” “I really enjoy working with our great team in delivering the final product. We have such a great operational team, most who have been here since the opening of the centre in June 2009. “Our clients are really looked after and have the benefit of the combined skill set of professionals with a long history of working in the industry and delivering first class events of all sizes.” The events centre at Maroochy RSL caters for all sizes of events including gala balls, day workshops, corporate boardroom events, training, conferences and fundraising dinners.
