President’s Report Now that the elections are over it is back to business. I would like to thank Les D’Alton for his leadership and tenacity during the amalgamation. It has been no easy feat to bring together the Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch and the Maroochy RSL Club. It took a good CEO to ensure the new association got off to a sound footing and I thank Harvey Fewings for his role. The amalgamation process was achieved in a relatively short period of time and the new association has set in place the foundations for a very successful club now and into the future. To ensure that Maroochy RSL continues to stay at the forefront of the Club industry in Queensland the board has appointed Clare Paton to the role of CEO replacing Harvey Fewings. This appointment took effect on 1 May 2013. It is imperative that Maroochy RSL continues with its good governance and as a result the Finance Committee will be chaired by Geoff Opray, the Compliance Committee by Don Ison and the League Committee by myself. ANZAC Day celebrations this year saw an overall increase in numbers attending the Dawn and Main Service. In particular there was an increase of young veterans attending our activities. The future of the RSL is in their hands and I extend an invitation to our young veterans to join the Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch. I wish to convey on behalf of the board a special thank you to all the volunteers and Maroochy RSL staff who assisted prior to and on ANZAC Day to ensure a very successful day for the Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch. Michael Liddelow Maroochy RSL President

CEO’s Report Having taken up the Maroochy RSL CEO appointment on 1 May, this is the first report I greet you in this position, a position that I am humbled and privileged to assume. At the same time, we also welcome a new Board of Directors of the amalgamated entity, a group of ladies and gentlemen who bring with them a plethora of RSL and commercial experience and skills to ensure the stewardship of Maroochy RSL is in safe hands. As we move forward, it is essential that we are all working together to ensure the welfare of veterans, young and old, is the primary driving factor behind everything we do. We have our commercial reality but this is offset by the positive efforts we do for the veteran community and the wider community at large. It is incumbent on us to ensure we are putting the planks in place to build awareness of the efforts of RSL House and encourage service men and women to join. Before we enter the winter months, it is appropriate we pause for reflection of ANZAC Day and the significant event it is in our calendar. We had a record number of current and ex-service men and women and their families in attendance, commemorating the day at the Dawn and Morning Services and the Marching Parade, followed by fellowship in The Avenue Bar. A tremendous team effort, led by the RSL House team of staff and volunteers, and supported by volunteer staff from the commercial arm, ensured the day ran seamlessly. A sincere thank you to all staff, volunteers and participants who contributed their time and effort to make this day a success. We all have the opportunity to contribute and ensure that every effort is made to be positive and respectful of ourselves, each other and our members and guests. My team and I look forward to working with you to make Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch the best it can be. Clare Paton CEO

Kuluin Regis Anzac Day Service Sub Branch member, John Knight (L) shows his photography work taken at the Regis Kuluin ANZAC Day service alongside Skip Antony (R) our Sub Branch volunteer who provided the service on the day. Flanders Fields In 1914, Flanders Fields was the scene of the First World War and for four long years, homes and fields were turned into a battlefield. Over a million soldiers were wounded, missing or killed in action. Countless citizens became refugees and entire cities and villages were destroyed. Since 1928, the daily Last Post still takes place at Menin Gate (Ypres) showing that the memories shall never fade and the burning aspiration for peace continues to flourish. On behalf of the Sub Branch I would like to thank Yasna Hawthorn (franchisee from LJ Hooker Mooloolaba) and her family, who had the privilege to remember the ANZACs at the Menin Gate (Ypres) Dawn Service on ANZAC Day, and kindly laid a plaque on behalf of the Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch.

Caboolture Warplane Museum First Sub Branch Outing Fifteen members and guests had a fabulous time on their first Sub Branch outing to the Caboolture Warplane Museum, followed on with lunch at Caboolture RSL. A museum with its main focus on WW1 aircraft have cleverly restored their aircraft to flying condition providing a uniqueness that not many museums can provide. They are used regularly in air shows and displays around the country. This along with a vast array of the different collections of engines, wartime exhibits and other memorabilia provided a fantastic opportunity to reminisce, reflect and gain some knowledge from the volunteers of the museum. Next Sub Branch Member Outing The Ginger Factory One of the Sunshine Coast’s iconic tourist attractions, the Ginger Factory in Yandina is our next scheduled outing for the Sub Branch Members. Take a leisurely walk through the gardens, jump on the Ginger Train, take a trip round the world on the Overboard water ride or have a browse round the heritage-style shopping village of Ginger Town. Look out for more info and date in the near future. Sharon Moore Maroochy RSL Welfare Manager Reveille WINTER edition 2013 | 07

WALLY AND FREDA -

A LOVE STORY OF 70 YEARS Ninety-two-year-old retired war veteran Wally Gibbons is still looking out for his mates. Each Friday he visits one of four local nursing homes to spend the afternoon with other retired Australian troops. Wally has played an important part in supporting Maroochy RSL, volunteering his time to the Maroochydore Sub Branch since August 2007 and has been a Maroochydore Sub Branch member for nearly twenty years. This true romantic is celebrating his 70th wedding anniversary with his beautiful wife Freda this year. Wally first laid eyes on his true love Freda at a barn dance in Brisbane just one week before he departed for active service in World War II in the Middle East. “Another digger and I knew we wouldn’t have the chance to do anything like that for a while so we decided to go to a dance and that’s where I met Freda. “I was with a group and saw this pretty girl across the circle and asked her to dance.” Wally and Freda hit it off with an instant connection but found it hard to be apart when Wally had to leave the country so soon. “She asked me if she could write me a letter while I was overseas,” he said. “I told her to take the chance but knew the mail probably wouldn’t reach me.”

It was during that week in May 1942 that Wally got down on one knee and asked Freda to marry him. Wally and Freda were over the moon and excited to begin a long and happy life together. Unfortunately Wally then had to depart again for the Middle East but returned in May 1943 for another week of leave so on May 15 they married. Every year since, without fail, Wally gives Freda red roses for their anniversary although Wally cheekily says “pansies would have been cheaper!” Wally believes the secret to a long and happy marriage is cooperation, love and trust. “Just love her and never stop loving her,” is Wally’s advice for married couples. The happy couple also received a letter from the Queen to congratulate them on their long and love filled marriage. Wally and Freda spent their 70th year anniversary with all their friends and family in May.

Much to Wally’s surprise he safely received his letter and Freda continued to write to Wally throughout his time overseas. When Wally returned home he was given a week’s leave and decided to “look that pretty girl up”. 08 | MAROOCHY RSL - caring for the veteran community

NEW WREATH The new wreath was installed and a short dedication ceremony was conducted by Padre Ern Sabel AM on Tuesday 23 April; in time for the ANZAC day celebrations. The new wreath was commissioned by award-winning Coast sculpture of wrought iron, Jan Calder in line with Hugh Anderson’s original design. It weighs approximately 100kg and is manufactured from marine grade stainless steel and has 380 handmade individual leaves on the outer wreath with a further 12 leaves on the attached wattle. The letters Lest We Forget are hand cut from bronze. The wreath has been hand painted to best reflect the changing colours of our gum leaves and includes six sprigs of wattle. It has been finished with a cleat coating to best protect it from our harsh coastal elements.

CANDY SUTTON -

NEW YOUNG MEMBER PROFILE Candy is one of Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch’s youngest members who constantly commits her time to volunteer for ANZAC Day and other commemorative activities. On ANZAC Day 2013 Candy proudly marched in the Flag Party with the support of her three biggest fans; her husband Corey and her two beautiful children Zayden and Dekota. Choosing to follow in her Grandfather’s footsteps, Candy joined the Royal Australian Navy in March 2002. Candy served as a Steward for eight years before being posted to the Sunshine Coast as a Recruitment Officer in 2010. She grew up in North Brisbane and said she always had a keen interest to join the Navy since she was quite young. “It was always an option for me, especially after speaking to my Grandfather about his time as a seaman. He was a large influence in my life,” she said. Candy applied to join the Navy during her final year of high school. She became a Sailor in March 2002 and completed her training with the HMAS Cerberus in Victoria. Her training over several months included both practical experience and classroom lessons to prepare her for the Navy. Describing it as very challenging, Candy said her training was also a great chance to meet and bond with other recruits, so she appreciated the importance of the recruitment process, both for the Navy and the individuals who sign up. A further ten weeks of employment category training with HMAS Cerberus followed and after that Candy was posted to Sydney as a Steward for several months before boarding the Kanimbla for her first true Navy experience.

“As a Steward my core role was hospitality, I did everything from assisting with meals to running mess dinners, table service at functions and occasionally cabin service;” she remembers. “I went on to work on a number of different vessels during this time and travelled to countries including Indonesia, Singapore, India and New Zealand. I really enjoyed all the aspects of my time at sea.” It was her posting to Cairns in 2008 that provided her experience in fleet logistics and support. That set her up well for her posting two years later to the Sunshine Coast to work in recruitment. As well as the varied career opportunities within the Navy, Candy says it was an unparalleled chance to travel widely at a young age. “I was very keen to travel when I left school but knew I’d have to work to save, so I feel I got the best of both worlds on joining the Navy. My outlook about the many advantages of working in the defence forces has equipped me well to recruit other young people to the job,” she said. “It has been a fantastic experience overall, I’ve made many lifelong friends and would highly recommend that every young Australian consider the contribution they can make by joining the defence forces.” Candy is currently working as a recruitment officer on the Sunshine Coast.

THE POWER OF MATESHIP Mateship is one of the major focuses of Maroochy RSL and so the Mates4Mates initiative of RSL (Queensland Branch) is a priority for our support. Mates4Mates is a fully independent and not-for-profit organisation, without political or religious affiliation, that was formed to support Defence Force personnel and their families to re-establish their lives on returning to civilian life. It also supports the families of those who do not return from war. Based on the power of mateship, the concept is to look after current and ex-serving personnel and families bearing a physical or mental burden. Mates4Mates offers rehabilitation services to enable returned service men and women to refocus on what they can achieve next in their lives and realise their goals. It ensures that there is always a mate to look out for them when needed, ensuring that they and their families have the support they deserve for any immediate or longer term needs. The Mates4Mates program has enlisted support from several well-known Great Mates, including some high profile Australians such as actor Hugh Jackman, athletes Pat Rafter and Natalie Cook, as well as several politicians, sporting legends and everyday Australians who honour the concept of mateship. Maroochy RSL is supporting Mates4Mates by getting involved in events and rallying fundraising to help to widen the range and reach of the services it offers to returning soldiers and families.

Rare ANZAC photographs uncovered A treasure trove of many priceless images from World Wars I and II has been donated to the Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch for its safe keeping. In May 2012, the Maroochy RSL Military Museum was donated the rare collection of two sets of film negatives and proof sheets by a photographic expert. Michael Lean, who was a photographic expert at QUT Kelvin Grove in the 1980s, was handed the negatives by a female student who asked if they could be developed. He proceeded to print the proofs but she never returned again to see them and could not be contacted. The envelope containing the negatives was addressed to Captain E. Williams who

served in the Army from 19 April 1966 until 11 December 1966. The negatives include many photos taken almost 100 years ago at ANZAC Cove, Egypt and New Guinea. There are also several family photos apparently taken in England and Brisbane. The negatives depict both Australian and New Zealand soldiers and are in very good condition for their age. Michael Lean met Frank and Peni Piper at a Museum conference in early 2012 and following their meeting he visited Maroochydore in May 2012 and donated them to the RSL’s Military Museum. Whilst the Maroochydore Sub Branch is very keen to identify the stories behind each

photograph, especially of the soldiers at war in Gallipoli, Maroochy RSL President Michael Liddelow says the priority is to locate the original owner and offer to return them. Maroochy RSL Director Drew Wall says most of the 40 previously unseen pictures taken at Gallipoli are in superb condition. “There are shots of the fleet and of diggers in slit trenches,” he says. “There’s one shot of an artillery shell going off on a ridge, as well as of mules carrying the wounded. There is a very poignant photograph of a series of crosses in a gully with a trundle moving past, which is obviously carrying a body - these kinds of images are obviously very, very unique and a fascinating look into the past at a significant time in our history as a nation.” In total the collection includes 202 negatives, only 20 were not in good enough condition to be printed; the remainder would ideally be archived professionally.

Reveille WINTER edition 2013 | 15

The ANZAC images include images of medical orderlies at work, hospital tents, diggers in trenches, mules carrying injured personnel, the terrain, the evacuation fleet, the beach with debris, grave sites, shells exploding, and many Australian, New Zealand and Indian soldiers. The images in Egypt show troops on leave, the pyramids, the Nile, local Egyptians, football and boxing matches, troops training and warships. The family images date back to around the 1950s and include Stonehenge in England and a Queensland house that may be in Hamilton or Kangaroo Point in Brisbane. The New Guinea images show Australian diggers with native carriers, a Dakota landing

on a mesh runway, a crashed USAF P38 Lightning fighter, and the local conditions of mud and rain. Finally, the 1960s images show RAEME style bush workshops with vehicles, a centurion tank and, notably, a photo of China Beach in Vietnam. After many hours of investigative work, Drew has managed to track down the name of the soldier that took the photographs from 1915. Drew discovered that the World War I negatives belong to 3134 Private George Frederick Cherry who arrived in Gallipoli on August 30, 1915. His research found that the camera that was used to capture these photos was a Kodak Vest Pocket Camera that used a 127 film with

8 negatives to a roll. This model of camera would have been made between 1912 and 1926. The World War II images are believed to belong to Captain Edward Williams and the Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch is attempting to trace him via the 5 RAR Association, with which he served in Vietnam in 1966. The Sub Branch hopes to locate relatives of both soldiers to seek approval to display the images in the national Australian War Museum. The Maroochydore RSL Sub Branch is extremely grateful to have been donated this exceptional collection which offers rare insights into Australian history.

OPERATION ANODE SOLOMON ISLANDS

Operation ANODE is the name of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) contribution to the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI). RAMSI’s assistance is known as Operation HELPEM FREN (Pidgin for ‘Helping Friend’). The nations with a military contribution to RAMSI are Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tonga. RAMSI’s mission is to assist the Government of Solomon Islands in the maintenance of security, law and justice, economic governance and improving the machinery of government. The main task for the military component is to be prepared to respond to incidents beyond the capabilities of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and RAMSI’s multi-national Participating Police Force (PPF). The deployment of ADF personnel is at the invitation of the Government of Solomon Islands and it aims to ensure the continued success of RAMSI in improving law and order in the Solomon Islands.

The ADF contribution to RAMSI Since the forming of RAMSI in 2003, the number of Australian troops in support has varied depending on the security situation at the time. After the rioting that followed the April 2006 general elections, RAMSI military personnel have continued their contribution to maintaining security in the Solomon Islands. There are currently160 ADF personnel, approximately 115 of which are Reserve and the remaining full-time troops predominantly from NSW-based 8th Brigade and personnel also deploying from multiple units across Army’s 2nd Division. Force elements comprise a Multi-national Headquarters and an Infantry Company with: • One platoon from the ADF; • One platoon rotating between the New Zealand Defence Force and ADF every eight months, currently the ADF; and •

One platoon rotating between Papua New Guinea and Tonga every four months, currently the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF).

Civilian employers of Defence Force reservists have experienced first-hand the conditions and challenges faced by their employees whilst serving on operations overseas. Twenty employers recently joined their reservist employees currently deployed to the Solomon Islands in support of Operation Anode. Now in its fourth year of operation, Exercise Boss Lift is designed to inform and promote to employers the important tasks being conducted by their reservist employees by providing them with a chance to experience service life in the field via such activities as kit demonstrations, range shoots and base tours. Exercise Boss Lift provides each Operation Anode reserve rotation with the opportunity to showcase the skills they have developed during their service in the Solomon Islands back to their local workplaces in Australia.

They arrived in Solomon Islands in March 2009 shortly after assisting in Operation Vic Fires Assist. The military component of RAMSI is comprised of personnel from four troopcontributing nations - Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tonga. The main task for the military component is to provide security for RAMSI’s multinational Participating Police Force (PPF) who work alongside the Royal Solomon Islands Police in maintaining law and order.
