Welcome

Maroochy RSL Club Report Best Club on the Sunshine Coast 2010

Len Thompson Chairman

Hello Members, On behalf of the Maroochy RSL Board of Directors, welcome to the Autumn edition of Backstage.

QUEENSLAND FLOOD DISASTER

It is an exciting time for the club and we are pleased to welcome on board Mr Harvey Fewings, to take the helm as General Manager of Maroochy RSL. Harvey has a wealth of experience in the RSL industry and brings with him an extensive array of commercial skills, all of which stand to benefit Maroochy RSL greatly. Harvey is also a Returned Serviceman, having served in a number of overseas locations. We are thrilled to have Harvey as part of the Maroochy RSL team and together look forward to achieving great things. After the recent tragic events, the Maroochy RSL Club extends its heartfelt concern for all Queenslanders, especially those within our own local community, who have suffered loss during this tragic time. Many of our fellow clubs across Queensland have also experienced damage in the floods. We wish for a fast recovery for our great State. We have a lot planned for the coming months throughout the club. We hope you enjoy the great dining and club activities and we wish you and your family a very happy and safe Easter.

In response to the severe floods that have devastated many communities the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) has been activated to assist people who have been adversely affected by flooding. Assistance is available for Australian residents that meet the program’s eligibility criteria, offering a one-off AGDRP payment of $1000 per adult and $400 for each child under 16 years of age. If you or someone you know has been affected by flooding please speak to Centrelink as soon as possible to arrange AGDRP assistance. You have until 4 July 2011 to complete and lodge a claim for this payment. For eligibility and more information call Centrelink on 180 22 66, visit your local Centrelink Customer Service Centre or Centrelink Agent, or visit the website at www.centrelink.gov.au

Harvey Fewings General Manager

Hello Members,

As a recent addition to the Maroochy RSL team, I would like to welcome you to the Autumn edition of Backstage. I am very excited and proud to join the Maroochy RSL, and look forward to meeting and working with you, our members, in the days and months to come to make sure Maroochy RSL continues to strive to new heights. Communities all over Queensland are still recovering from the recent floods and devastation. To offer support to those affected, Maroochy RSL raised funds for the Disaster Relief Appeal and donated furniture to other RSL clubs inundated by floodwaters. The cleanup will continue for some time and our thoughts remain with all those impacted. In April, we commemorate the most important day on the RSL calendar, ANZAC Day, where we honour those who have served Australia. There will again be two ceremonies, one at 4.15am at the Cenotaph on the Esplanade at Cotton Tree, and the main march commencing at 8.30am through Memorial Avenue and onto the Cenotaph at Cotton Tree. Entry into Maroochy RSL prior to 1pm is by ticket only. Sub Branch, Ex-Service and current service personnel can pre-purchase tickets at the Maroochy RSL Sub Branch and Maroochy RSL from March 28. Maroochy RSL will open for normal trading at 1pm. For a full program of the events for ANZAC Day, please refer to page 24. Maroochy RSL is a club passionate and committed to giving back to the community. Throughout the year the club supports many local organisations,

not-for-profit groups and events by way of sponsorship or donations. Local schools, charities and sporting groups are just a few of the many who have benefited and you, our valued members, can feel proud to be a part of this achievement. You can read more about the support Maroochy RSL members have recently donated to the local community on page 4. For all of those chocolate lovers out there, Easter is just around the corner! Mystery Island will be holding an egg hunt and bonnet parade on Easter Sunday and there may even be a visit from the Easter Bunny! For a full list of the Easter school holiday activities being held in Mystery Island see page 8. The second Sunday in May is Mothers Day, so don’t forget to spoil your mum and let her know how much you appreciate her! Infusion Bistro will be holding a full buffet breakfast where each mother will receive a flower. For more details, please turn to page 16. If you decide to let your mum enjoy a sleep in on Mothers Day, why not spoil her with the buffet carvery lunch on Level 1 from 12noon. For more details, please see page 7 and bookings can be made on our website or at reception. Be sure to read through the calendars for March-May, starting on page 10, for full details on all the entertainment, promotions and meal specials throughout Autumn. On behalf of the team at Maroochy RSL I would like to wish you all a safe Easter Break.

Community

Community has a reason to smile

During 2010, the Maroochy RSL provided direct financial support to a host of local sporting and community groups, on top of in-kind support through free venue hire and volunteer assistance by staff. 2011 looks set to achieve the same.

While the club helps these organisations directly, the flow-on effect of these community contributions has an even greater reach.

This year the generosity will continue with more than 80 different clubs and organisations benefiting from Maroochy RSL sponsorships and donations.

“Seeing volunteers working together, mateship, young people getting involved, and older people enjoying something that we have sponsored, makes us all very proud to be able to offer our help to the community.”

Len Thompson, Chairman of Maroochy RSL’s Board, said the magnitude of the club’s community support often went unseen. So many staff and members gave time to coordinate activities and assist others, on top of the considerable financial support to a wide range of community organisations. “In 2011, we look forward to continue helping Sunshine Coast clubs maintain their facilities, raise funds for charities and provide sponsorship for various sporting clubs,” Mr Thompson said. “Apart from seeing happy members and visitors at the club, it is one of the most rewarding facets of being central to the Sunshine Coast community.” One of the local clubs to receive support from Maroochy RSL is the Maroochy Roos Junior AFL Club. The local club has been supported by the club for the past six years. Club president Tony Kennedy said the money donated by Maroochy RSL has allowed the club to buy new jerseys for all age groups. “We would struggle to exist year-to-year if it wasn’t for their sponsorship,” Mr Kennedy said. “Thanks to the financial assistance from the club, we are able to keep our registration costs at a price that is affordable for all children.” Maroochydore Rugby Union’s Ian Portingale agreed and said the sponsorship has allowed the club, with 300 Coast members, to keep their annual fees low from junior to senior teams. “Another side is their willingness to assist us in relation to functions by letting us utilise the function area at the Maroochy RSL when required,” Mr Portingale said.

“It’s easy to see how donations can make a real difference when they are used for facilities or equipment,” Mr Thompson said.

Just some of the organisations that Maroochy RSL assisted in 2010 include: • Give Me 5 For Kids • Maroochydore Football Club • Maroochydore Rugby Union • Maroochydore Coolum Senior Rugby League • Maroochy RSL Clippers • Mountain Creek Netball • Mountain Creek High School Basketball • Maroochydore Hockey Club • Hear and Say Center Sunshine Coast • Maroochydore Ex-Service Women • Bloomhill Cancer • Adopt-a-Family • Volunteering Sunshine Coast • Maroochydore High School

Try your skills at snooker

Community

Dawn Richmond is on a mission. The no-nonsense, straight-talking president of the Maroochy RSL Snooker Club is trying to attract new members and she’s after some young blood. In 2010, the club had a membership base of 92 with “more elderly people in it than young” and she would like to see a little more balance across the membership board. The club’s youngest member is 17 and she is hoping more young people come in and pit their skills against some talented competitors. “You’ve got to use your brain a bit (playing snooker)” she said. So the challenge is out there. Have you got what it takes? It might have a reputation as a sport for the more mature but Dawn said an 18 year-old won a handicap tournament last year and a Brisbane-based player who is only about 20 has been playing world class snooker in overseas tournaments. Of course more mature members are also welcome. With many RSL Clubs removing their snooker tables, Maroochy is one of the few snooker clubs left on the Coast. She said for older people with bad backs, who can’t bend down to play bowls, snooker gives them an opportunity to continue playing a competitive sport and one that requires skill and tactics. “We run five top tournaments a year,” Dawn said. Each tournament runs over three days, starting Friday and finishing Sunday, and can accommodate 32 players.

The Snooker Club has six registered referees, who are qualified to referee at big tournaments anywhere in Australia. The Club has five accredited coaches and free coaching is available to anyone who would like to learn the finer details of the sport. Every Thursday is social night. Players need to register by 5.45pm for a 6pm start. All visitors are welcome but they must become Snooker Club members after three nights. Membership for the Maroochy RSL Snooker Club is $5 per year. For more information contact Dawn Richmond on (07) 5448 4802. The Snooker and Billiard room is also open to Maroochy RSL general members.

Bowled over

Competition is rife in the Rixon household and there are no holds barred when someone is on a winning streak. The Buderim family of four is a bowling family – lawn bowls that is – and in a sport where age is no barrier, there is plenty of friendly rivalry between the four. However it is probably fair to say that nine year-old Rebecca and 13 year-old Connie-Leigh are the rising stars of the family. The two girls, who play in junior tournaments throughout south-east Queensland and train at Maroochydore’s Swan Lawn Bowls Club, both made it into the District Ladies team before their mum, Rose. “They rubbed that in,” Rose said with a laugh. Both have been playing the sport for about two years and have embraced it. But it was quite by accident that they got involved. “We used to go down to our grandparent’s place in New South Wales and all the parents used to play (bowls) and all the kids used to sit inside and play Snap and things like that,” Connie-Leigh said. Driving past the Swan Bowls Club in Maroochydore one day, Rose noticed a sign advertising lawn bowls lessons. Before they knew what was happening she had walked in, signed up for lessons and signed the girls up as well. It was not long before the two girls were showing everyone that they had talent and would be a force to be reckoned with. “I love it. It’s a fun game,” Rebecca said. “It’s really cool because everyone cheers you on and they make it really fun for you,” she said. She trains twice a week and plays every Saturday and she thrives on the finer points of the game.

Photo by Brett Wortman / APN

“You have to concentrate. It makes you work harder.” The girls both prefer to play in a junior tournament however because they are so young and there are so few Coast youngsters playing the sport, they often play against people five or more years their senior. They also play social games at the Swan Bowls Club on Saturday afternoons in a friendly but competitive environment against adults. And while not too many of their school mates are involved both girls think it is a great game for young people. In the meantime, there is no end to the family rivalry. Swan Bowls Club offers free coaching with accredited coaches on Wednesday and Saturday mornings or by appointment. Call 5443 1370 for more information. backstage 5

Impressive Choice By Lisa Gore, food critic

It was a Friday evening. It had been a huge week and I had a house full of hungry guests, including two energetic eight-year-old kids and an empty fridge. At the mention of takeaway, the hungry critters suggested seafood, pasta, salad (of course that was from an older critter) and my vegetarian friend was solo in her request for leafy meals. With no common link between their requests, I started to fret. That was until I remembered reading about my local club, Maroochy RSL’s, new pasta night on a Friday.

My dining partners chose the spicy chorizo pasta dish, the vegetarian lasagne, pumpkin soup and plate upon plate of potato and Greek salads. They were all impressed with the endless choice of sauces and pasta varieties. The presentation was spot on and everything was clearly labelled and topped up the moment it looked low.

The all-you-can-eat-pasta night is held every Friday from 5.30pm on Level 1 of the club.

My southern friends were impressed with the level of choice on offer and value for money for just $15.

Located near the bar facilities and with options to sit inside or outside on the balcony, the pasta nights are proving very popular with patrons.

But I think the best comment from the night was from Mr eight-year-old ‘wow mum yummy dinner, can I have some more?’

For just $15 for members and $8 for kids, the pasta buffet offers all varieties of pasta and toppings. There is also a variety of side dishes on offer to accompany the pasta choices.

Anything that can get my eight-year-old eating good food has my vote.

On the night we were there, I opted for the seafood pasta, which had an abundance of fresh mussels and prawns. While I wanted to try the other

options, I couldn’t peel myself away from this sauce. It was delicious and had the appeal of a homemade sauce with rich and fresh ingredients. The sauce didn’t overpower the mussels and prawns, which often happens with seafood dishes. It provided an equal balance.

As quickly as I could say “all-you-can-eat”, they were all tucking napkins into their shirts and piling into the car.

Buttermilk Panna Cotta with Red Wine Poached Pears Brett McRae, Executive Chef, Maroochy RSL

Ingredients

This rich, creamy dessert is perfect for Autumn

300mL cream 600mL buttermilk

6 peeled pears (your favourite variety)

2 cups sugar

1 cinnamon stick

2 vanilla beans (sliced length ways in half)

3 cups red wine

4 sheets of gelatine

The zest and juice of 1 orange

3-4 cloves

Method Combine the cream, half a cup of sugar and 1 vanilla bean in a pot over medium heat, bring to a simmer and then remove from heat. Soak the gelatine sheets in cold water until soft then add to cream mixture. Stir to combine. Add the buttermilk and remove the vanilla pod. Pour the mixture into mould and place in fridge to set. Place the red wine and remaining sugar in a pot and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Add the cinnamon stick, cloves, remaining vanilla bean pod, orange juice and zest and stir to combine. Place in peeled pears and add water if needed to ensure pears are covered. Simmer for about 30 minutes or until pears are soft. Remove the pears and reduce the liquid until a glaze consistency forms. Allow to cool. When the panna cotta is set, plate with the pears and drizzle with the red wine sauce. Garnish with fresh seasonal fruits as desired.

The Swan Bowls Club Report

Peter Jervis, The Swan Manager

Hello again from The Swan Bowls Club,

In November 2010 Leisa Kerris performed a fantastic tribute show to Connie Francis. Due to popular demand Leisa will be repeating the performance on Saturday May 14.

The Swan Prelude and Winter Bowls Carnivals are fast approaching again. The Maroochy Swan Holiday Prelude starts on Wednesday June 1 with over 20 events and prize money ranging from $500 to $5000. This is followed by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s 49th Winter Bowls Carnival which runs from Tuesday July 5 until Sunday July 17, with many of the events being held at The Swan Bowls Club. We will be welcoming many interstate and trans-Tasman visitors to the Coast for the carnival so please ensure they feel at home in our club. For any enquiries regarding the carnival or bowls in general, please contact our Bowls Manager, Barry Sullivan on (07) 5443 1370.

Bookings for dinner are once again essential. To ensure you don’t miss out, please contact our reception on (07) 5443 1370. Don’t forget the regular entertainment at The Swan Bowls Club each week, plus two bingo sessions, free NPL poker, Wacky Wednesday, raffles and more. Please see page 21 for details. For those members and guests who haven’t visited The Swan Bowls Club, please feel free to use the Maroochy RSL courtesy bus as it services both venues. We hope we see you soon at The Swan Bowls Club.
