President’s Message Happy February Everyone! To kick off February’s newsletter, we hosted our 65th Annual Banquet last month with an exceptional turnout at the Heritage Center with great entertainment, catering, recognition of our outgoing and newly incoming board members along with our local BSC scholarship winners. A huge shoutout to all in attendance, to all our local sponsors and to all of those who pulled off a wonderful evening!
ANDREW MELDAHL 2024 BMHBA PRESIDENT
Next up, our focus is now the upcoming 47th Annual Home Show at the Bismarck Event Center, March 15th-16th. The Home Show committee has been working hard filling up the booth spots with our local businesses and vendors. There is still time to reserve your booth at bismanhomeshow.com this is a great opportunity to advertise your business, generate leads, and promote your product and support our Association!
Make sure to also mark your calendars for the 2nd Annual Builders Battle of the Bags located at Send It 24/7 Cornhole in Mandan. This will be held on February 15 th from 5-7pm. Last year’s initial kickoff was a great turnout, and we are looking forward to this years event being that much better! If you have time to squeeze one more event into your February schedule, the NAHB IBS Expo will be held in Las Vegas on February 27-29. If you haven’t experienced this expo yet, it’s definitely a must see. Any and every name tied to the building industry is likely there displaying their product for you to see. It’s a great event to expand your knowledge on product availability that could benefit your business. Simply visit www.buildershow.com to purchase your pass. Many of us have been impatiently waiting, but it seems we are slowly gaining momentum in the right direction with interest rates dropping. This is generating optimism within our local building economy. With our local housing inventory still relatively low, this will eventually lead to a strong demand for housing again. In the meantime, stay focused, stay optimistic, and stay on the right path that’s best for your business!

Meet Our New 2024 Board Members Cory Thompson - Fabricators Unlimited How long have you been in the BMHBA? Been with the Bismarck-Mandan HBA since 2004 Where do you work and what is your job title? I work for Fabricators Unlimited. I am the Branch Manager for the Bismarck location. Started as a sweeper in our Fargo Factory as a teenager and have worked through all facets of our business over the last 30 years. How has the building industry changed since you first joined the association? Social Media and digital technologies have dramatically changed the face of the construction trade. For better or worse, but its ability to see how a project could look or ideas it can give to make projects unique and I individualized to the consumer. What has been your favorite part about being a member of the BMHBA? The social networking. I am an introvert by nature, but forcing myself out into the building community more and more has made great relationships and friendships! What location is on your travel bucket list? Ireland, then WWII historical sites throughout Europe.
Casey Bernard - Fix It All How long have you been in the BMHBA? Fix it all joined the BMHBA last year. Where do you work and what is your job title? I am the owner of Fix It All and Legacy Properties Solutions. How has the building industry changed since you first joined the association? The technology has made estimating and overall operations more streamed lined. What has been your favorite part about being a member of the BMHBA? I love the Home Show! Awesome way to display who we are and connect with potential clients. We love to network and help solve our community with their home issues. What location is on your travel bucket list? East Coast! I have several locations on my list it is tough to narrow it down to just one.
Parker Pladson-Epic Homes How long have you been in the BMHBA? We have been part of the BMHBA since 2013, just over 10 years! Where do you work and what is your job title? I am the CEO of Epic Homes in Bismarck and Fargo. How has the building industry changed since you first joined the association? Technology has allowed us to communicate more efficiently with our clients, trades, and to quickly share information which allows us to build across the state effectively. What has been your favorite part about being a member of the BMHBA? I enjoy the Parade of Homes. It is a great event and a wonderful place to build brand awareness. Also, the Golf scramble is ALWAYS a fun day! What location is on your travel bucket list? A world cruise to see as much of the world as possible.
BMHBA PWB The Professional Women in Building group volunteered their time and efforts this morning to pack backpacks for the Bismarck Mandan United Way Backpack Program. This remarkable program has proven to be essential for students across the Bismarck-Mandan area, providing food to Bismarck Mandan elementary, middle, and high school students who might otherwise go without during the weekends. A total of 1,624 backpacks were packed and delivered to local schools for counselors to then give them discreetly to students in need. The food to fill the backpacks was sponsored by our local Bismarck-Mandan Home Builders Association. A special thank you to Tobias Marman Construction for donating the space for us to use this year and to all of our volunteers who helped fill bags and deliver these out to our local schools For more information about how you can also help this cause please visit msaunitedway.org/hunger.
On Thursday, January 18 the BMHBA gathered at the Heritage Center in Bismarck for our 65th Annual Banquet. The new BMHBA directors, Parker Pladson (Epic Homes), Casey Bernard (Fix It All ), and Corey Thompson (Fabricators Unlimited) were sworn in along with our 2024 President, Andrew Meldahl (Pinnacle Homes). We also said goodbye to three of our board members Jamie Schmidt (Investcore), Lori Willson (Northern Plains Plumbing, Heating, & Air), and Ron Stoz (Caves). We THANK YOU! The BMHBA would like to extend our gratitude to our generous sponsors and members! We couldn’t host these events without you!

Be Aware of Pests Searching for Construction Site Refuge A cold North Dakota winter makes a construction site look appealing for many of nature’s smaller critters. Rodents, birds or animals such as cats can look to take up residence in your construction site. However, sharing your space with some of these creatures could bring significant risk. Some of these animals may damage materials or tools, creating an inherent dollar value cost. Rodents are notorious for chewing on many different objects and could damage tools or power cords. Depending on the animal, the health of your workers or potential property buyers could also be at risk from a disease. Rodents like mice and rats can spread hantavirus when urine, droppings or saliva containing virus particles are stirred into the air. Bird droppings can carry diseases such as psittacosis, candidiasis and cryptococcosis. Rabies, which can be transmitted through mammals such as bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes, is also a concern. While the CDC warns that you cannot tell if an animal has rabies just by looking at it, animals with rabies will often act strangely, perhaps by being aggressive, timid or drooling more than normal. Pests may be attracted to a construction site for shelter and food or water. Severe weather can often make these sites more attractive. These general tips can help keep your construction sites secure: • • • •
Keep vegetation around a construction site cut/trim. Keep the site tidy. Don’t have food and drinks laying about and make sure any leftovers are removed or Inaccessible to rodents. Eliminate water sources. Look for signs (droppings, bite marks on wires, nests in insulation or next to scaffolding) that pests are present. Place traps and/or bait traps around the site. Contact an exterminator if you can not control the infestation.
By keeping tabs on your winter construction sites, you can help ensure that you are not opening up your operations to unexpected disease and damages. Builders FirstSource is your first source for great customer service and high quality building materials.

What is an interesting fact about your business that most people don’t know? We work mainly in Bismarck and Mandan, but also around the entire state. Do you have any advice for someone just entering this industry? Don’t rush things. Take your time. You can learn from everyone. What is a typical day like for you? Start the day visiting job sites, meeting with foreman or subcontractors, after that I usually meet with clients, then I will spend my afternoon bidding jobs, or managing the current ones. What do you hope to see Kioti Contracting accomplish in the coming years? I’d like to see us expand in every aspect. More crews, more innovation, more projects.
