The Bismarck Mandan chapter of Professional Women in Building (PWB) recently hosted another successful Lunch and Learn, featuring speaker Deb Eslinger. The event focused on the ever-relevant topic of “Work vs Family Balance: Does This Exist?” and “Resisting Burnout.” Eslinger shared valuable insights, providing practical advice, personal stories, and strategies to help attendees better manage the demands of both their professional and personal lives. The event brought together many PWB members and guests, sparking conversations about the importance of self-care and establishing boundaries in today’s fast-paced world. Thank you to all who attended, we hope to see you at the next one!
The PWB is excited to announce its participation in the Giving Tree Project again this year. Through The House of Prayer. We have set a goal to help at least 20 individuals, which is roughly $2,500. PWB and the BMHBA will be matching all donations up to $500! This project allows our great community to contribute directly to those in need, and every donation will make a big difference. Donations can be made by contacting any PWB member or by scanning the QR code provided below. PWB is committed to spreading kindness this holiday season, and with the support of the community, they hope to reach their goal and make a meaningful impact. We hope that everyone will get involved and contribute to this wonderful cause!
What is an interesting fact about your business? We don’t just do rows. We grow, sell, and plant trees shrubs perennials and grasses. We have a wholesale yard to support local landscapers and offer a full range of supporting services for our products. We offer planting, drip irrigation, weed barrier fabric installation, tree watering bags and other systems to help you be successful with everything on the green side of your business.
What is a typical day like for you? Coffee, check trees and watering systems, load up for the day’s projects, brief the team on the day’s schedule, and after that it is all a blur until the next day at coffee time.
If I weren’t in the Tree/Nursery Industry, I’d be … I am an engineer, and worked full time as an AV Design Engineer up until we took our tree nursery to the level where I could not continue to work at both.
What do you hope to see Tree Rows 4 U to accomplish in the coming years? We want to continue to grow the industry in central and western North Dakota. We do not just want to grow our own business, but to grow our community. ND is the least forested state of all 50. We think that leaves a lot of room for growth, and we can’t do it alone. That is why we are always looking for landscapers and developers to help get more trees, shrubs and other plants out there with more efficient and successful plantings, and lower costs as a local resource. Rather than paying full retail or waiting for space on a truck from out of state, we can provide those plants right here in Bismarck whether you need one more Karl Foerster to finish a project, or you need trees and shrubs to supply your entire season.
What inspired you to enter this industry? We started when I built equipment to plant small plots of bare root trees for our own property and property of our family and friends. The local soil conservation was not able to do planting services and rows of fabric for smaller lots. After I built the equipment, we got more and more requests for planting and fabric installation, and when the soil conservation started calling me, I decided to make it into a business. It really grew out of a need for the community, and when we could not find something offered locally, we found a way to be the ones to offer it.
What makes your business unique from other Landscapers? I guess I would say that we are different in that we are not landscapers. We are here to be a resource for landscapers, along with developers and property owners. We do not do any hardscaping, sprinkler installation, seed grass or lay sod, though we do sell sod from a ND sod farm. We do sell and plant trees for retail customers, but we refer them to our landscaping customers and partners for any other landscape needs. We can work as a subcontractor to landscapers, or we can run the projects and sub out to a landscaper when that makes more sense on a project.
What is your favorite part of your job? Watching everything grow. It is great to build something, create something, and that was the part of being an engineer I enjoyed so much was to create something to solve a problem. With this, I not only get to see something we have created years down the road, but I get to see it as it grows through the years. Changing with the seasons and maturing into something much greater than it was the day we worked on it.
What is your favorite quote that speaks to you or business model the most? I am not sure of any specific quote that speaks to us and our way, but we try to always conduct our business with the same values we try to live our life by. I was raised with strong family values and was shaped as a man by the army values. I was a leader in the army as an NCO and had the opportunity to learn from some great leaders, and to lead and develop some great soldiers and young NCOs in my career. I try to take the things I learned and grew from then and apply them to our business the proper equipment in place.
