Real simple Every little bit helps - save big bucks on home energy costs By Christopher Adamson CTW Features For those daunted by the thought of making their homes energy efficient, there is hope. Start with small yet meaningful lifestyle changes and watch the bills shrink. From appliances to electronics, nearly every aspect of the modern home consumes massive amounts of energy inefficiently, which means equally massive costs for homeowners. “Any home can benefit from some energy-efficiency updates, says Sara Snow, a green living author. Here’s how to cut energy costs without breaking a sweat.
1. Seal the deal Leaks and drafts, in anything from foundation cracks to heating ducts, make heating and cooling systems work twice as hard. “Pay special attention to leaky windows and doors, says Snow, author of “Sara Snow’s Fresh Living
After 35 Years
(Bantam, 2009). Small gaps can be re-caulked or plugged quickly, and she suggests regularly applying fresh weather stripping. Old windows and doors are some of the worst energy-wasting culprits, agrees Leah Ingram, the author of “Suddenly Frugal (Adams Media, 2010). New, tightly sealed models will pay for themselves.
2. Manage the powers that be
“Appliances, when plugged in, all generate heat, which wastes energy and costs money, Snow says. “Many [electronics] are generating unnecessary heat all day long. As a good rule of thumb, unplug appliances when they’re not in use. Put electronics on the same power strip or surge protector so you can easily turn them off.
3. Switch to cold water
“One of the easiest changes homeowners can make to reduce their energy costs is to stop using so much hot water, Ingram says. “The average American spends about $2,500 a year

on energy, just to heat water. She doesn’t recommend sacrificing hot water all together, but some cutbacks, like doing laundry with cold water only, will save a lot. If a tankless water heater is not in the family budget, install a timer on your electric water heater.
4. Get green “Shrubs and climbing vines can cool your home by as much as 20 degrees and can cut cooling costs by 30 percent, Snow says. “Plant shadeproducing trees and shrubs around your home to help keep the sun off of your house, especially on the west and south sides.
5. Invest in insulation “I believe that if you have a poorly insulated home, you should make those changes for sure, Ingram says. “Buying insulation isn’t cheap but it can cut down on heating and cooling bills. Attic insulation is the most important. An adequate amount can save homeowners around $120 a year in energy costs. “The rule of thumb - as far as attics go - is that if you can see the floor joists, you don’t have enough insulation up there, she says.

Fashion for the home: Hardwoods are a key design element in contemporary furnishings From the runway to the living room, hot trends in home fashion can take the style of a room from simple to stunning. Incorporating trendy furniture into home decor is an easy way to add style without having to make costly renovations.
or shape is on-trend in furniture. And that’s not just furniture: hardwood is an essential ingredient throughout the house -- any style of house -- in flooring, cabinetry, and millwork, as well as furniture.
If you are looking for ideas to upgrade your home’s interior decor for 2012, the American Hardwood Information Center offers design trends inspired by the most recent High Point Market home furnishings show.
Tying in with the theme of bringing the outdoors in, garden inspired design is a hot trend in both furniture design and home decor accessories. The garden gate motif works well with everything from bedspreads to pillows to furniture coverings.
Bring the outdoors in
A key furniture trend for this season is bringing the outdoors in through the use of natural American hardwoods. Outdoor-inspired furniture that mimics traditional park benches, picnic tables and lawn chairs, using hardwoods, is a noteworthy design element. Inspired by Mother Nature, designers at the High Point Market showcased hardwoods in both traditional and modern forms, accentuating the organic curves, movement and form of the natural material. Homeowners can mimic the look by selecting wood furniture with unique curves or pieces that highlight the natural whorls, knots and texture of the wood. “It is never a surprise to see hardwood show up in what’s trending all over the High Point Market, says Rose Bennett Gilbert, home decorating expert, author, and syndicated columnist. “After all, hardwood is a natural material that’s totally adaptable to whatever style
Garden inspiration
Natural neutrals to bright blues
Trends in wood finishing have moved from dark to light. Consider lightening up the look of your furniture with soft neutrals such as pale grays, whites and nudes. Beyond hardwoods, mixing in bright hues with your decor can really make a room pop. What’s hot right now? Color palettes inspired by earth’s elements such as blues, greens and reds.
Cherry on top
Though wood finishes may be trending lighter, American cherry is the top species in four categories of wood furniture, including bedroom, dining room, home office and entertainment cabinets, according to Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc.’s 2011 Furniture Styles and Material Use Survey, conducted at the High Point Market. Walnut, red oak and white
oak round out the top species, with many furniture manufacturers using clear, satin finishes to protect the wood while allowing its true characteristics to come through. If you are undecided about which species to choose for your home design, the American Hardwood Information Center at www.HardwoodInfo.com offers a species guide, stain selector and inspirational photo galleries to help with wood furniture selection. A free smart phone app is available for download as well. “With hardwood as a prominent trend in home furnishings right now, the site is a valuable tool for those looking to incorporate American hardwoods into the design of their home, says Linda Jovanovich, executive vice president for the Hardwood Manufacturers Association, and representative of the American Hardwoods Promotion group. “One of the great things about hardwood is that even as design trends come and go, solid hardwood furniture will last a lifetime and can be restained or painted if you want an on-trend look.
ABOVE: Trends in wood finishing have moved from dark to light. Consider lightening up furniture with soft neutrals to get the look of this poplar chest of drawers from Hooker Furniture. BELOW: Furniture that accentuates the organic curves, movement and form of hardwood, such as this oak chair from Lee Industries, is a growing trend.

Projects that might require a
building permit
All too many homeowners have experienced the joy of completing a home improvement project only to learn upon completion that the project is not in adherence with local laws. That realization, while heartbreaking, is often the result of a homeowner’s failure to secure a building permit prior to starting the project. Homeowners who secure a permit before the onset of a project will know what they can and can’t do and can rest easy knowing that an approved plan complies with engineering principles and local laws. Another disadvantage to forgoing the permit process is the potential perils such a decision cause when homeowners want to sell their homes. Projects completed without a permit might hurt a home’s resale value, and such projects are not often covered by homeowner’s insurance policies, meaning damage to areas of the home where an illegal project was conducted won’t be covered. While homeowners should always check with their local municipality before starting a project, it might help to know the many home improvement projects that typically require a permit before they can go forward.
Some home improvement projects that require a building permit:

‘Re-feathering’ your empty nest on the cheap The kids are finally on their own and you’re ready to reclaim some spaces in your home that were previously dedicated to child’s play. Even though as empty-nesters you probably won’t spend so much on food, education and gas money, you’re still not ready to go into debt to redecorate the once-kidcentric rooms in your home. Fortunately, it’s easy to find redecorating options that pack grown-up appeal without a grown-ups only price tag. You can make over bedrooms and play rooms with a few budget-friendly tricks. Not sure where to start? Here are a few helpful hints:
!
! $ ! % # $ ! ! " $ $ $ $ ! ! # $ ! #JTNBSDL t #"/,
! !
Your teen barred you from making decorator decisions about her room long ago. Now that she’s moved out, it’s time to tear down those rock band posters, empty the closet of clothes she’ll never wear again, and do something more sedate with those awful candy pink walls. Whether you’re planning to sell your empty nest and downgrade to something smaller, or just want to enjoy all the rooms in your home again, redecorating a child’s room has many advantages. Start by repainting walls in neutral, sophisticated tones. Then, spice things up - in a mature, adult way - with an accent wall. For those who are afraid committing to wallpaper, repositionable peel and stick wallpaper is a great option for creating a unique decorator feature in a room. For a more subtle approach, try a paint color a shade or two darker than the color in the rest of the room. Clear all the excess toys out of the playroom, and put their X-box in stor-
age. Now you’re ready to put that space to adult use -- as a home theater, craft room or office. Bring in that big-screen, high-def TV you didn’t buy before because you couldn’t bear the thought of sticky fingerprints all over it. Buy that awesome surroundsound system you passed on for years because you feared how it would sound with your kids’ favorite cartoon blasting out of the speakers. Finally, don’t overlook the bathroom. If you’ve held off on buying new towels, bath mat and a shower curtain until there were no more teenagers in the house to mess them up, it’s time to treat yourself. While you’re at it, replace the utilitarian shower head with a luxuri-
ous multi-head unit or a rainfall shower head. Choose a serene, comforting color and paint over the cartoon fish decals. Seize the opportunity to re-feather your empty nest to your tastes. And don’t feel bad about doing it. Studies show that redecorating an adult child’s room so they know they “can’t go home again actually helps them better make the transition to independence.

Top home decor trends for 2012
'1+ 0!) + ," , &
From warm woods and creative colors to memorable murals and tailored textures, interior designers and industry experts predict 2012 will offer a multitude of options for those interested in giving their homes a fresh look. Even better for today’s cost-conscious consumers is that many of the trends are easy and inexpensive.
The facts about furniture
According to Emmy Award-winning home design expert, author and TV/radio personality Christopher Lowell, upholstered furniture coverings are being driven more by texture and less by prints. Yesterday’s bulky, stationary pit sofa will be replaced by lower backs and seats along with smaller “footprint pieces clustered into conversation groups for more flexibility and ease of interaction. Stacy Garcia of Stacy Garcia Design Studio sees a movement of woods from very dark mahogany and espresso to lighter and mid-toned woods, with raw, natural walnut, cherry and white oak being especially prevalent.
Make a statement
For homeowners interested in adding life and personality to a bedroom, living room, family room or office, a decorative wall mural is a quick, cost-effective way to go. From cartoons to famous artwork to cityscapes to nature scenes, the wall mural options are endless. You can even turn a photo into one. And, for those who don’t want to get stuck in one place, repositionable wallpaper is a great option.
The right touch
According to Lori Dennis, interior designer, author and upcoming star of HGTV’s new show The Real Designing Women, next year’s textures and fabrics will include iridescent metallic woven within fabric; strong patterns and bold prints; modern floral; tailored woven fabrics like tweed, herringbone, plaid and houndstooth; velvet/velour, sumptuous dupioni silk, and faux fur. Natural fibers such as bamboo, jute, eucalyptus, cotton, silk, wool and cork will remain popular, adds DeAnna Radaj of Bante Design LLC.
A splash of color
Deborah Wecselman of DWD Inc. suggests starting with neutral hues of taupe, beige, cream, grey, black and white, and then adding unexpected pops of color with bold accessories
from bright yellow paintings to royal blue vases. Dennis echoes this vibrant color spectrum, with rich jewel tones like emerald, amethyst, sapphire, ruby, garnet and citrine along with deep teal, fuchsia, honeysuckle, coffee and gold.
Light up your life
According to Bradburn design team manager Martin Lucki, lighting options will include linen shades with clean tailored lines and a play toward texture. Lamp bodies will be made of carved reclaimed woods deftly finished in soft, neutral tones that showcase the natural wood grain. Beverly Hills designer Christopher Grubb of Arch-Interiors Design Group, who considers decorative lighting “the piece of jewelry in a room, recommends architectural sconces for applying makeup or shaving to avoid the shadows cast by overhead lighting.
Please tread on me
Kitchen designer/blogger Susan Serra sees a renewed interest in woven or knotted textures on rugs with “back to basics motifs that harken back to simpler times. These rugs are easy and cheerful to live with, make a design statement, and serve as interesting foundations for rooms with upholstered or casework furnishings most often seen in neutral colors. Lowell also sees a trend toward investment area rugs on tiled floors or those resurfaced with wood or faux wood veneers for better wear and tear and a greater perceived home value.
Decorating on a dime
According to artist/designer/author Pablo Solomon, people will continue to look for unique, cost-effective ways to improve their homes. They’ll buy and restore secondhand furniture, swap artwork and accessories with friends, and use yard sale proceeds to purchase new items for their homes. Consignment stores and estate sales will be hot in 2012, adds best-selling author and home design expert Lauri Ward of Redecorate.com, with people discovering the benefits of buying older, distressed pieces that are well made and affordable. Chairs and sofas that can be reupholstered or slipcovered, and cabinets for storage, will be sought for their quality as well as the aesthetic interest they add to modern rooms.

Good night, excess light Put wasteful energy practices to bed starting in the bedroom
Adopting energy-efficient practices doesn’t require a lifestyle overhaul. Start small. Tackle bedroom lighting first with minimal modifications that will equal big energy savings. Embrace energy efficiency by first understanding industry lighting terms. The incandescent light bulb - the bulb of the masses - uses wire to conduct electricity that produces light. The problem with this cost-effective and timeless illuminator comes from the amount of heat it produces. “Before the realization of how mankind’s electrical activity impacts the planet, the Edisoninvented bulb was the cheap and easy way to create light, says Steve Thomas, host of Planet Green’s “Renovation Nation show. With today’s buildings accounting for nearly 50 percent of energy used, looking for other options like compact florescent lights or light-emitting diodes is more a necessity than a feel-good move. “Energy saving is all about scale. Five people saving energy in one home doesn’t make a difference - but five million does, Thomas says. Here’s how to become one of the five million.

When swapping out old for new, know how to read the packaging. Understanding which wattage goes with different types of lighting fixtures can be confusing. When replacing a 60-watt incandescent bulb, look for descriptions like 60Watt Replacement or Soft White 60 on the CFL or LED bulb package. Any bulb with an Energy Star label has the backing of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Use dimmers
Adjust light needs by activity. For bedside reading, increase the brightness; for less eye intensive activities, lower the intensity. “The lower the light output, the less energy used. Simply put, dimmers save energy, Dennis says.
Find the flame
“Beeswax candles with organic cotton wicks create instant mood lighting while being eco-friendly, Dennis says. Set the stage for relaxation after a long day by stepping back in time with this ageless light source.

“For places that light quality is not critical, like the closet or near the door of the bedroom, switch to CFL or LED bulbs, Thomas says. In addition to less energy output, using CFL and
LED bulbs equals a decrease in electric bills and less frequent trips to the store for replacement bulbs. “CFL bulbs light a space with less wattage, at a low cost, are dimmable and have good color quality. LED bulbs are slightly more expensive but last longer, use even less energy and have better quality light, says Lori Dennis, a Santa Monica, Calif.-based LEED-certified interior designer.

Pave the way
Upcycle your glass, plastic and rubber products to create a no- to low-maintenance driveway By Dawn Klingensmith CTW Features Considering how much real estate driveways take up, it’s a shame more of them don’t make a statement. A driveway can enhance a home’s beauty if the right materials and installation techniques are selected. And in today’s marketplace, there are plenty of pavement options that can add character and are mindful of the environment. A highly porous pavement called FilterPave makes for a glittery, colorful surface thanks to the crushed beer bottles and other recycled glasses that make up about 90 percent of its composition. The glass pieces are held together with a pliable binder, so it has “kind of a Rice Krispie bar look to it when it’s poured in place, says Bill Handlos, director of Geosystems, the Appleton, Wis.-based manufacturer. Heineken and
Rolling Rock bottles make up the green aggregate, while Budweiser and Amstel Light go into the amber-colored mix. FilterPave was designed to be “exceedingly permeable, Handlos says. “More water will go through this than through a lawn or grass. However, grass is perhaps the ultimate green driveway material and it’s gaining ground, literally, says Tania Gybels, owner of Environmental Concept, a Van Nuys, Calif.-based landscape services firm. But there’s more to a grass driveway than meets the eye. A manufactured reinforcement grid, usually consisting of plastic cells, is necessary for support. The grass grows over and conceals the grid. The trick is just making sure that no one blocks the driveway, mistaking it for a yard. Among other greener options are rubber or composite pavers made from re-
cycled tires and plastic bottles. VAST is a brand of composite permeable paver made from 95 percent recycled materials. Permeable pavers help the environment by capturing storm water and allowing it to seep into the ground instead of running over the surface and sweeping pollutants into the water system. Porous concrete accomplishes the same thing, it just doesn’t look hand-laid. It generally looks the same as traditional concrete but is manufactured without fine aggregates, so there are voids that allow for infiltration. Concrete has more potential than is often realized - it can be tinted, mixed with colored glass, or stamped or engraved to mimic natural products like slate. Asphalt can be accessorized by edging it with pavers or creating a “driveway apron with bricks or paving stones at the entrance, says Arnie Pel-
legrino, owner of Rocky Point, N.Y.-based Long Island Elite Landscape Designs. “It brings the landscape into the driveway, he says. Decomposed granite can be loose like gravel or blended with stabilizers or resin to create a substance similar to asphalt, but it’s more colorful. It is used where a natural or rustic look would complement the architecture and surroundings, Gybels says.

Take a look inside your walls when renovating As you tear off the wallpaper, replace the cupboards and strip the floorboards, experts caution not to reach for that bucket of paint before investigating the innards of your walls. Insulation and infrastructure are significant to the foundation and value of your property, so bringing in a home inspector or appraiser allows you to make corrections early, before you’ve finalized the renovation plans. Common problems center on air leakage and poor insulation issues, experts tell us. Three green trends for 2012 bathroom remodeling For some homeowners, remodeling projects are regular occurrences to keep their homes looking fresh. Sometimes, that means smaller changes like a new coat of paint or changing a light fixture. Other times, more substantial changes are needed. Determining which changes to make can be a challenge, but looking at the potential return on investment is a great way to prioritize. Bathroom remodeling offers a 68.7 percent return on investment, according to a National Association of Realtors survey. One way to add value to a bathroom remodel is to pick bathroom fixtures that are more efficient than what you currently have installed. Americans are going green in many areas of life, whether with more energy-efficient light bulbs, hybrid cars or by recycling more
regularly. Bathroom fixtures are no different. Here are three reasons why you should consider going green with your bathroom modeling project: N Products may be outdated. Toilets made before 1994 use anywhere from 3.5 gallons to 8 gallons per flush (gpf), while new EPA WaterSense labeled high-efficiency toilets can work beautifully on a modest 1.28 gpf. Not sure of your toilet’s vintage? Look at the underside of the tank lid - the date of manufacture is often stamped into the porcelain. In the shower, the typical showerhead installed in California homes built after 1994 uses as much as 2.5 gallons per minute. At that rate, your eight-minute shower consumes a

whopping 20 gallons of water. N Savings to be had. Compared to 3.5 gpf toilets, there are high-efficiency toilets which have a flushing system that enables homeowners to select the level of water used each time the toilet is flushed - 1.6 gallons for bulk waste or .9 for liquid. The approach provides exceptional water savings paired with outstanding performance. A family of four can save more than $90 annually on their water bill, and $2,000 over the lifetime of the toilet.
N Be a trendy homeowner. A whopping 68 percent of builders surveyed by the National Association of Home Builders say that energy-saving technologies and features including low-E windows, energy-efficient appliances, and LED lighting will be common along with other green features like engineered wood products, and water-saving plumbing fixtures such as dual-flush toilets and low-flow faucets by 2015. Start now and you’ll be ahead of the curve.

H SE OW MI -TO NA R
If you replace a typical 2.5 gpm showerhead with a high-efficiency showerhead, you will experience the same luxurious shower, yet consume a responsible 14 gallons, saving 20 percent of the water used by older models.
Even something like a faucet can contribute to water savings. A WaterSense labeled lavatory faucet only consumes a responsible 1.5 gallons per minute without sacrificing an ounce of performance.

How to choose a builder Whether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if the kids are on the way and it’s time to expand your living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing, experience. There are many reasons for building a new home, but regardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder should remain the same. Andrew Nadalin, a fourth generation builder and craftsmen, offers the following advice to prospective homeowners with their eyes set on building a dream home to call their own. N Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder’s reputation speaks volumes, but it doesn’t have to speak for itself. That’s because a builder who has spent years providing personal service, innovative design and

quality workmanship will no doubt have a host of happy former customers ready and willing to offer their input. If during the interview process a builder appears reluctant to share his work or experiences with previous customers, this should be a red flag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more than willing to show it off.

N Find a builder who is flexible. You will be paying to build your home, not the builder’s home. A builder should be flexible and ready and willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be.
N Don’t build on the cheap. Buyers who plan to build their own home are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe and high-quality as possible. This isn’t always the case when buying a resale, so make the most of your opportunity and use only top-of-the-line construction materials and features and choose a builder with experience in working with such materials and features. Building on the cheap could prove disastrous in the not too distant future, so don’t sacrifice on quality when building a new home.

Company’s coming! Easy ways to clean up in a snap It’s the season for spring cleaning, and homeowners no doubt have a slew of projects on tap in the weeks to come. Clothes will be sorted and donated and unnecessary items thrown in the trash. Sometimes, however, there’s little time for a thorough cleaning, so a quick tidying up is done when guests are coming to visit. There are many ways to tackle the clutter and get a home presentable in no time at all. When you’re short on time, consider these ways to give living spaces the appearance of cleanliness.
Kitchen
• Assess the kitchen sink and move all the dishes awaiting washing into the dishwasher. Wipe down the inside of
the sink with a disinfecting wipe or a clean sponge. • Wipe down the countertops quickly with a wipe or sponge. Wet a paper towel or rag and attack any errant spots on the stove and floor, which will become sticky and attract more dirt. • Fold or hang dish towels in a way that camouflages any stains. • Place a small pan of water on the stove with some nutmeg and cinnamon and bring to a simmer. This will disguise any smells lingering from last night’s dinner. • Take down magnets and notes stuck to the refrigerator and temporarily place them in a zipper-seal bag.
• Use a static-charged sweeper sheet to grab any hairs, dust or pet fur from the floor.
Living Room
• Go to the sofa and turn the pillows to the side that is not often facing outward. Consider this the “company sideâ€? that may not have any stains or mars in the fabric. Fluff the pillows to

How to Tile Your Backsplash with Glass Saturday, March 10 • 3 p.m. Overview:
If you’re looking for backsplash inspiration and installation tips for glass tiles, make sure to attend this seminar. Josh will demonstrate how best to cut and install glass tile. By the end of the seminar, you’ll know which adhesive, grout and caulking are needed to achieve the look you want and you’ll even get some design inspiration for your backsplash project. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Josh worked as a tile installer before joining Magi-Touch Carpet One Floor & Home, so he has first-hand experience!

Ease into spring projects with these simple steps Now, while the winter is still around, is the best time for homeowners to get a jump start on planning and prepping for their spring and summer home and garden projects; so when the weather really does warm up, it takes little effort to get the projects underway. In addition to fine-tuning home improvement and gardening plans, it is also a good idea to make certain the required tools are in tip-top shape, so the projects are not delayed. Here are some ways to prepare for the spring and summer seasons with just a few simple steps:
Plans
Sketch out those garden plans, and pick the plants that can be purchased or grown from seed. Plans don’t need to be drawn to scale, but they’ll provide great background information for a shopping list. Research how early seedlings should be started, so they’ll be ready for transplant when the time arrives. Also create plans for any home projects that need to be accomplished. The depth of those plans depends on how complicated the project is. Make certain all permits are in order, if required by the community; and if a contractor is needed, a formal agreement and timeline is in place prior to work commencing.
Lawn tools
Check pruning shears for sharp blades - and either sharpen or replace them

if they don’t easily cut through a small stem of plant material. Also, review lawn mower blades. Check the oil, gasoline and starters on all gardening machinery to ensure they’ll run correctly when needed.
House tools A review of all home tools helps to determine if any new purchases - or replacements are needed. This is the perfect time to head to the store and purchase missing tools, add new blades to saws or replenish the sandpaper stash - eliminating wasted time running back and forth to the store.
Materials As the project season gets closer, start purchasing the materials needed ahead of time. This helps to spread the cost out, and can give an idea of how much time and effort the project will take to be completed. Get started now in matching colors, finding the perfect accessories and even comparing prices between different suppliers to help save money. For homeowners who haven’t experienced the warm-weather-project itch quite yet, it’s still a good idea to start thinking about those items on to-do lists to help yourself be prepared and ready to go when the season arrives. It doesn’t take a lot of energy to have a successful spring and summer project season.

When your redecorating project is done, you want everyone who sees it to think it looks like a million bucks. But woe to your wallet - and possibly your credit - if you overspend to achieve that look.
Smart ways to use credit
Credit can be a good tool to help you fulfill your decorating dreams, provided that you use it wisely. The last thing you want is to rack up redecorating debt that outlives the stylishness of your room’s new look.
when redecorating
Before you give your bank card a workout, or sign up for a new credit card with your local home improvement store, take these credit-conscious steps:
1. Assess your current credit status

Whenever you’re considering a significant credit expenditure - like financing a remodel - it’s important to understand your credit and how your spending might impact it. Websites like freecreditscore.com allow you to see your credit score, and provide information on how it’s calculated, what factors affect it and even when is the best time to apply for new credit. Understanding your credit could mean the difference between using credit wisely to fund your redecorating project, or opting to wait until your

credit situation improves before you incur new debt.
2. Estimate the cost of your project
Spending without a plan is one of the surest ways to overspend, especially when it’s a home improvement project. In order to create a plan, you need to know the likely cost of your redecorating project. Online cost estimators can help you get an idea of how much you’ll need to fund your redecorating dreams. You’ll need to consider all aspects of your project, from paint and carpeting to curtains and accessories in order to get the most accurate cost estimate.
3. Determine what you can do yourself
If you can do some of the home improvement work yourself, you’ll not only save some money, you’ll get the added bonus of pride in doing it yourself. Be honest with yourself and think about which tasks you’re skilled enough to tackle (painting, hanging curtains) and which ones you’ll need to leave to a professional (laying carpet or placing tile).
4. Establish a budget
Once you have a cost estimate, and know where you can find DIY savings, you’ll be able to establish a budget for your remodeling project. To prevent overspending, pad your budget as much as 10 percent to cover cost overruns. When your budget is set, you’re ready to begin. Keep a running log of all expenditures and refer to your budget frequently to ensure your project is staying on track and within costs. Redecorating can be a fun, rewarding home improvement project. With advanced planning and careful consideration of your credit, you can use credit wisely to help make your vision a reality.

Make indoor mold growth a distant memory Homeowners who have had prior issues with mold know just how pesky a mold problem can be. When mold spores land on surfaces that are wet, mold may begin to grow indoors. And the growth of mold takes just a matter of hours. According to the National Association of Home Builders, all it takes is 48 hours for a moist environment combined with room temperature to produce mold growth. When mold does begin to grow, homeowners will notice a less-than-welcoming aroma often characterized as musty. In addition, mold growth, which is most common in areas of the home like the
kitchen, bathroom and basement where humidity and moisture levels are higher, can be unsightly and unhealthy. In 2004, the Institute of Medicine linked indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough and wheeze in people who, prior to exposure, were healthy. The IOM also found exposure to mold can exacerbate asthma conditions for people who already have asthma and even linked respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children to exposure to mold. What such research highlights is the emphasis homeowners must place on removing mold from their homes. While

mold is a natural part of the environment that is impossible to eliminate entirely, homeowners can take steps to stop mold growth in their homes and protect themselves and their families along the way. When addressing a mold problem, keep in mind the potentially negative impact mold can have on your health and dress accordingly. Wear long sleeves, gloves, protective goggles, and even a mask or respirator that covers the nose and mouth to reduce your risk of developing a respiratory illness. N Fix leaky pipes and additional water problems. Mold growth can cause cosmetic damage that can never be repaired. But fixing leaky pipes and addressing other water problems, including leaky windows, is a good way to stop future mold growth and prevent further cosmetic damage to the home. N Scrub and dry moldy surfaces. When addressing moldy surfaces, scrub them hard with detergent and water. Once finished, dry the surfaces thoroughly. Going forward, routinely clean areas of the home that have had mold growth in the past.
" " !
N Do not mask the mold problem. Painting or caulking over mold won’t work. When applied to moldy surfaces, paint typically cracks. Instead of wasting paint and time, scrub and dry the surfaces, making sure all the mold is gone, and then paint or caulk. N Leave big jobs to the pros. Smaller mold growths can be addressed by the average homeowner. However, when mold growth is especially large or mold has grown on valuable items, including heirlooms, it’s best to hire a professional. When doing so, try to find one a friend or neighbor can recommend, as not all mold-removal specialists are created equal. If it’s hard to find a recommendation, look for a specialist who is affiliated with a professional organization.

N Discard certain materials that fall victim to mold. Porous or absorbent
surfaces will likely need to be discarded once they have been victimized by mold growth. Ceiling tiles and carpets, for example, are especially difficult to rid of mold once it’s settled in because the mold finds cracks and crevices in which it essentially hides from cleaning. In such cases, it’s best to simply discard the items and have them replaced.

Restoring your property after the winter months One of the best things about the dawn of spring and the return of warmer weather is the chance to get out of the house and get some fresh air. For homeowners, this is the perfect opportunity to assess any damage the previous months did to yards and develop a plan to restore properties. N Don’t jump the gun. The first warm day of spring might seem like a great time get out in the yard and get your hands dirty. But it’s best to wait until the grass has completely dried out before getting to work. Raking on wet grass increases the risk of tearing out grass, which can cause bald spots and the growth of weeds down the road. In

addition, stepping on the grass while the ground is still wet can compact the soil, which can slow drainage and block the lawn’s roots from breathing. Patience should prevail with regard to mowing the lawn as well. A lawn’s roots will not start to grow until the average everyday temperature routinely reaches 40 F, so mowing too early is both unnecessary and potentially harmful to the lawn. When the temperatures regularly reach 50˚ F, then homeowners will likely start to see their lawns growing. N Remove debris that’s piled up. Debris has a tendency to infest a yard over the course of the winter months. Fallen branches, stones and even trash
. %#

can accumulate in a yard, putting those who spend time in the yard at risk of injury once the warm weather returns. For instance, bits of twigs and pebbles that are blown across the yard during a windy winter can be embedded in the yard, making the yard less of a haven and more of a hazard. Once the grass is dry enough to walk on, walk around the property and remove any debris that’s piled up over the last few months. N Employ a pre-emergent weed killer. Homeowners who routinely spend their summers agonizing over weeds throughout their yard should consider applying a pre-emergent weed killer around the beginning of spring. It’s important to do so around the end of March or early April, when the weeds have not yet had a chance to grow. When applying, follow the dosage instructions provided by the product’s manufacturer. Such instructions often recommend a second application right before summer begins. N Remove thatch. Once the grass has dried, you can begin to remove thatch that’s built up over the winter. Thatch is potentially very harmful to soil, block-
ing sunlight, air and moisture the soil needs to ensure a lawn looks lush and healthy. Thatch removal does not necessarily need to be an annual task. If thatch buildup is insignificant, then it can be done every other year. Just use a dethatching rake to make the job much easier. N Aerate, particularly if the yard is a heavy traffic area once the warm weather arrives. If your yard transforms into a child’s wonderland upon the arrival of spring and summer, you might want to revive the soil by aerating. When the yard gets heavy usage, it’s easy for soil to become compacted, which makes it hard for air and water to reach the lawn’s roots. That can eventually make for a less-than-appealing lawn. So if your yard is the place to be come the warmer months, aerate in the spring to loosen the soil and make it easier for the lawn to withstand the months ahead. No matter how harsh the winter months might have been, spring is a great time for homeowners to restore the property around their homes.

If you get it done in the spring, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it throughout the year.
Bathrooms Since you’re freshening up the rest of your house, don’t forget the bathrooms. Besides simply scrubbing your tub, cleaning bathroom tile and regrouting is an easy way to get your bathroom looking clean and bright. This project can be done over a weekend and is simple enough for most homeowners to handle. By taking some time to tackle these projects now, you’ll give yourself a whole summer of relaxing in the warmth of your newly refreshed home.

Turn your first home into a
decorator’s showcase Whether you’ve signed a lease agreement or purchased a house, moving into your first home is an exciting time. For many people, it’s their first opportunity to express their personal style by decorating their own space. Whatever your taste - contemporary or classic, modern or rustic - you want your first home’s interior decor to look polished and put together. And you’d probably rather not spend a bundle achieving that look. Do-it-yourself home decor is popular for exactly those reasons. By doing the design and implementation yourself, you can save a lot of money. Plus, many people find that doing it themselves makes decorating their homes an even
more personal and rewarding experience. So where do you start if you want to turn your first home into a decorator’s showcase? Focusing on a few key areas can yield high-impact results. Start with the walls; they’re the largest design element in any room, and repainting them is an easy, high-payoff way to begin redecorating. Choose colors that not only speak to you, but that also make sense with key furniture pieces you already have. For example, if you have a great sofa that you love, consider choosing a color or two from the pattern and using that on the walls. Another smart paint strategy is to do

three walls in a restful, neutral color and then spice things up with a more vibrant hue on a fourth “accent wall. Whatever color you choose, remember to buy the best quality paint you can afford. It will last longer and look great.
Carpet tiles are also a great way to get the look and feel of new carpet without the expense and installation challenges of wall-to-wall. And bathrooms and kitchens can both benefit from a new flooring of easy-to-install vinyl tiles.
Another option for dressing up your walls is to use removable murals. Wall murals are a favorite design trick of interior decorators. Repositionable murals make it easy to decorate with a mural - minus the commitment or expense of having one professionally painted. The moisture-resistant murals can be placed and then repositioned anywhere in the house, even the bathroom or kitchen (where Mediterranean wall murals are hugely popular).
Finally, accessories are the icing on the cake when it comes to your interior decor. Even if your furniture is mature, you can make it look young again with new accent pillows and slipcovers. It’s possible to find reasonably priced artwork to fit nearly every design theme these days, whether you look online or hit one of the big box home design stores.
Once you’ve gussied up your walls, it’s time to look down and think about the floor. Flooring is the second largest design element in a room and it forms the foundation for your other design decisions. If you’ve got the budget and the gumption, you can remove and replace old carpet, re-stain worn wood and retile dated floors. If your means and your DIY skills are more modest, you can always cover up unappealing carpet with throw rugs that speak to your tastes.
Window treatments are another accessory that will give you more bang for the buck. You can get a designer look for less when you dress up cheap, storebought panels with some personal touches. Turning your first home into a decorator’s showcase doesn’t have to cost a lot. A sense of adventure, some creativity and the willingness to do the work yourself can have your home looking like something from a TV interior design show in no time.

Top 2012 garden and lifestyle trends: Cultivate the new good life with the power of plants In today’s fast-paced world, people are searching for balance and purpose and are tapping into the power of plants to cultivate the ‘new good life’. “Plants are powerful, says Eric Liskey, deputy garden editor for “Better Homes and Gardens magazine. “Whether it’s enjoying garden-to-table meals or sharing great new plant finds, people are naturally drawn to plants. Besides beautifying our homes and gardens, plants play a vital role in our health and well-being. They elicit powerful positive emotions, revive neighborhoods, and influence everything from what we eat to life’s milestones. “Plants are no longer a luxury, but a necessity for our lives, says Susan McCoy, trendspotter and outdoor living expert. “Plants can live without us, but we can’t live without plants. For a growing army of eco-conscious
Gen X and Y’s, recycling, repurposing and upcycling is now a lifestyle. Dr. Charlie Hall, professor of horticulture at Texas A&M, says, “Gen Y’s are embracing a connection with plants based on economics, environmental impact, health and wellness. These rural and urban curators are planting home and community gardens and renewing urban spaces with an eye toward functionality and artistic design. Here’s what McCoy and her team of Garden Media Group trend spotters see for gardening in 2012: 1. Urban knights. A growing army of ‘urban knights’ are creating oases wherever they can find a patch of earth. They’re planting shrubs, flowers, edibles and pop-up gardens on balconies, in alley ways, and on street parklets - even in abandoned buildings.
From yard sharing and raising chickens to ‘step gardening’ and harvesting rain water, urban knights are finding a ‘new good life’ by getting grounded with the earth. 2. Eco-scaping. From rocks in the garden to rocks in the living room, nature’s influence can be found both indoors and out. “Borders are blurring between indoors and out as nature becomes more important in our lives, says Bobbie Schwartz, president of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. “Many people want their gardens and their homes to be sanctuaries of tranquility, reflecting their ideal concept of nature. Beauty and sustainability are key. Liskey says that people want the “beauty and romance of a garden with less work. “Gardeners want easy, lowmaintenance plants that give plenty of
color. “Herbs are popular as cooking shows and healthy eating habits grow, says Briscoe White, head herb farmer at The Growers Exchange. “It’s easy to pot up herbs indoors and out for fresh ingredients year round. He recommends planting containers of herbs de Provence for beauty and cooking or edging a landscape border with lavender. 3. Occupy local. People are “occupying local farmers markets and joining CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture) for fresh produce, plants and products. “Farmers markets are our new backyard veggie gardens and are becoming our local grocery store, says McCoy. According to the U.S. Dept of Agriculture, sales of “locally produced food reached $4.8 billion in 2008.They project that locally grown foods will

According to the 2010 Cone Survey, 83 percent of consumers still want to see more brands, products and companies that support worthy causes. “We’ve finally moved from “me to “we and consider our earth and each other when we purchase, says McCoy. 5. Water watchers. “There is no single issue greater than water, says Dr. Hall. Recent drought and regional water restrictions are causing us to grow plants, flowers and vegetables with less water. Soil amendments like the new SoilReef biochar are considered by many scientists to be the “black gold for gardening. Its high carbon content and porous nature help soil retain water and nutrients, saving gardeners time and money. Hydroponic gardening is hot, allowing plants to grow year-round in nutrient rich solutions that actually use less water. 6. In living color. Neon colors, pop art and color blocking are influencing

Decorating our inner gardens with houseplants for better, healthier lives is now the norm. These natural oxygen machines clean indoor air while bringing life to any room. Whether you want ferns, peace lilies or palms, bring nature in and green up your spaces. To learn more about the benefits of indoor houseplants check out www.O2forYou.org. 8. Techno-gardening. With the rise of smartphone technology, consumers are able to go directly into the buying experience. According to TrendWatching, ‘dealer chic’ is on the rise where securing the best deal is not just accepted - it’s admired. 9. Seedlings. From the White House to the neighborhood schools, kids are learning how to grow their own food and take care of the planet. McCoy says we’ve ignored two generations of gardeners and need to get kids back to having fun growing things. She

Many homeowners equate a beautiful landscape to rolling acres of pristine lawn. But changes in the climate and widespread seasonal restrictions on water use each year could change the way people think about outfitting their yards.
Grass-free landscaping - a viable alternative
There are many reasons people choose to forgo grass and opt for different ornamental elements in their yards. Cost is one factor. While grass seed is relatively inexpensive, the upkeep, including mowing, fertilizing, re-seeding, and watering, requires a significant investment of both time and money. Many homeowners choose to lay down sod to create a beautiful lawn, an expensive option for homeowners with vast landscapes. The environment is another reason homeowners look for grass alternatives. Grass requires a lot of upkeep, much of which is not environmentally friendly. For example, maintaining a pristine lawn requires the use of a gas-powered mower and oftentimes the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Seeking alternatives to grass can be friendly on both the wallet and the environment. For those who are ready to say goodbye
to grass, there are many grass-free alternatives. N Ground cover: Homeowners who still desire the look of green can choose among different types of ground cover that will quickly fill in the landscape. Clover, low-growing evergreen plants and ivy are some of the more popular ground cover alternatives. N Rocks: Decorative rocks intermingled with native plants can add dimension and color to the yard. Once rocks are placed, there is little upkeep except for pulling the errant weeds. N Mulch: A less expensive alternative to rocks is mulch. Mulch is available in different colors and types and can even be created by a homeowner by chipping trimmed branches from trees in the yard. It helps lock water into landscaping beds, decreasing the need for frequent watering. N Water features: Think about installing a pond in the yard that can be bordered with stones and mulch. This will take up a good amount of space and can create a natural habitat for wildlife and even some low-maintenance pond fish. N Concrete or patio stones: Although

they’re not all-natural materials, patios can take up areas normally consumed by the lawn and create expansive outdoor entertaining areas. It will require an initial investment of the patio material, but once installed, patios don’t require significant maintenance. Homeowners can offset the concrete jungle feel by placing plenty of potted plants and container foliage around the
perimeter. N Decking: Another alternative to concrete and stones is a wood or composite material deck. Again, this structure will increase outdoor living space and won’t require the level of routine maintenance needed to keep a lush lawn.

Upgrading your home into
home sweet home
'1+ 0!) + ," , &
Home sweet home. With more homeowners deciding to stay in their homes longer, that old adage is more meaningful than ever. But staying put doesn’t mean homeowners are settling. Many are upgrading or redecorating their abodes, turning their old home into the stylish - yet comfortable - home sweet home they’ve dreamed of for many years. Upgrading and redecorating a house can be done in small steps, or in one overhaul, depending on your available time and finances, and the upgrades you want to do. For example, redesigning your kitchen with new appliances, cabinetry, flooring and wall color will require a lot more time, money and decision making on your part than redecorating a bedroom with new linens, wall color and rearranged furniture. Whether you want to have everything done in one large overhaul, or intend to spread your upgrades out over several years, you need to develop a working plan - one that can be constantly tweaked and updated as the project progresses. Here are some tips to get your working plan started: N Plan on a budget. You can develop a total budget for all the work you
want to do, or an annual budget, which will help you divide up all the projects so you are able to afford them over a period of time. When planning your budget, it’s a good idea to overestimate the cost of a project, just in case something unexpected pops up requiring additional cash. Many a home remodeler can tell you about the simple home improvement project that turned into something much bigger than originally anticipated. N Set a timeline. This is to determine your availability to work on the project. If you find that you only have a day or two available, you probably will want to plan for a much smaller project. Or you may want to hire out any work you won’t be able to finish yourself. N Make a list of equipment you need. If you’re going to be purchasing larger supplies like wood boards and drywall, you will have to make sure you have a suitable vehicle to transport the materials or factor in the cost of delivery. Also, double check to make sure you have all the tools needed to complete the job. If you don’t have a specific tool, look into purchasing or renting what you would need. Nothing is worse for your productivity than getting halfway through a project and realizing

you don’t have the tools to finish the job, and can’t get them for another few days. N Ask questions. As you get started in the planning of your project, talk to friends and family who have done something similar, as well as the experts at home improvement stores. The more information you have, the more
prepared you will be to address issues as they arise. Staying in your current house and revamping it into that dream house you always wanted can really pay off. Smart home improvements can do wonders for your property value.

Spring into 2012 with the
hottest colors for your home
As you anticipate what exciting things this year will bring, you might notice your home decor has been left behind. Fortunately, you can easily beautify and modernize your home using hints from design experts on the hottest color trends. Don’t worry that you’ll need to break the bank - simply updating the shades of your walls can create the feel of an entire new home without the cost of buying one. And you’ll enjoy starting the year in fresh, contemporary surroundings. “Our world has become increasingly complicated and fast-paced in recent years, to the point that many people are now taking steps back to re-evaluate their lifestyles and consider what’s truly important, says Donna Schroeder, Dutch Boy Paints manager of Color + Design. “As we look back to simpler times, we also see how design and style have evolved. Dutch Boy’s 2012 color forecast is based on this reflection and the self-expression of what people find meaningful. This year’s diverse color trends are rich and full of history, helping people create spaces that truly show their inner selves. Featuring five groupings of the hottest colors in home decor, the Dutch

Ethereal

The Ethereal collection floats above other color palettes, airy and atmospheric with tea-stained and faded hues evocative of the lightness of the sky under the midday sun. Light colors from this palette include Epidermal, Faded Mint and Feather Lite.
Primitive
A meandering path through the forest takes us past colors only to be found in nature. Deep barks, shocking citrines and raw earth inspired the natural colors of this palette. The Primitive colors are as mysterious as the shaded canopy of the woods that inspired them. Suffused with energy, they speak to growth, regeneration and life. nological era coming back full force. Retro office meets geek chic for a new take on ‘70s style, as seen in this grouping. The Fundamental color palette makes full use of classic, contrasting neutrals like beige and gray - designed to work as the perfect foil for bold main accents of green, orange and vibrant blue. Basic colors in the Fundamental palette include Ink Blue, Aged Cognac and Rudimentary Beige.
Pastimes
It’s time for a road trip back in time to motels boasting refrigerated air, a gallon of gas that cost a dime and the game of miniature golf that was every family’s obsession. The Pastimes color palette is filled with exuberant shades reminiscent of lazy summer days at a lake house without a television, or the intensity of the circus coming to town. It’s American culture from the 1940s and ‘50s - a simpler time, an antidote to the fast-paced buzz and hum of mod-
ern technology. Bright Pastimes hues include Clown’s Nose, Kiddie Pool and Orangesicle.
Compose
A street of dreams with a focus on soft femininity and vintage 1930s floral fashions are at the heart of the Compose color palette. Rich, dark hues are offset by bright pops of color that despite their origin in an earlier era, look fresh and new. This is a collection that worships the creative being in all of us, and encourages self-expression through home decorating. This inspired palette contains shades such as Purple Pencil Skirt, Lip Stain Pink and Theatrical Teal. Choose any path to fit your home, whether it’s a light, shimmery mint from the Ethereal palette, or a natural natural green from the Primitive palette. Using these cues from the color professionals, you can ensure your home enters 2012 in style.

What to look for in
outdoor furniture Outdoor entertaining areas have always been popular among homeowners. The ability to entertain friends and family or simply relax by yourself is something homeowners cherish, particularly during the warm weather seasons. Finding the right furniture to match your outdoor area, be it a deck, patio or poolside lounging area, is essential to making the most of this special area of the home. When shopping for outdoor furniture, consider the following. N Weight: Unlike furniture inside the home, outdoor furniture will be moved around quite frequently, such as to protect it from inclement weather or changing seasons. As a result, the weight of the furniture bears importance. While you don’t want furniture

that’s too lightweight and will blow away any time a strong gust of wind comes along, it’s a good idea to choose furniture that isn’t too heavy. This makes it easier to move should a storm suddenly appear and it won’t require the entire household to help move the furniture into and out of the garage when inclement weather arrives. N Comfort: The whole idea behind an outdoor entertaining area is to have a relaxing place to spend time outside. So be sure to choose furniture that’s comfortable and can handle the elements. Metal furniture, for example, might be durable, but such furniture can also get very hot if out in the sun. N Versatility: Many homeowners enjoy changing their home’s interior decor from time to time, and it can be just as enjoyable to do the same to a home’s exterior decor. That said, look for furniture that can be accented with a variety of accessories, so you can change the look of your outdoor entertaining area

easily. N Protection: Protecting exterior furniture from the elements should be a priority. When shopping for outdoor furniture, figure out if protective covering is available or if it will need to be custom made. The latter alternative can be quite expensive, so you might want to consider more generic furniture that comes with standard protective coverings to make it more affordable.
