BISHOP MONTGOMERY High School
PARENT NEWSLETTER October 2016
From the Principal: Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon, Principal Dear Parents,
Since our September newsletter, Bishop Montgomery has been a busy place! Aside from the teachers and students beginning the year’s academic endeavors in earnest, we have celebrated our first school Mass, had Back-To-School Night, our Big-Little Sister Lunch, our Welcome Frosh Families Barbeque, and kicked off our one and only school fundraiser for the year. There have been, of course, football games, volleyball, tennis and golf matches, and cross country meets as well as many ASB, Campus Ministry, Club, Band, Color Guard and Spirit Squad activities—and that’s not naming everything! So what is ahead? Here are a few events in October to note: • We begin October with the Homecoming Dance on October 1st at the Torrance Marriott from 7:00-10:00 p.m. • Monday, October 3rd is 100% day. All students who sold 100% of their fundraiser tickets will have the day off from school. Just a reminder that all proceeds from this one yearly fundraiser are dedicated to this school year’s operating budget. Thank you! • Tuesday, October 4th is a late start for students. Faculty will attend a faculty meeting beginning at 7:45 a.m. • On Friday, October 7th, prior to our football game against Verbum Dei, we will celebrate our new Athletic Hall of Fame inductees beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the main gym. All are invited to attend and to celebrate these alums with us! • On Wednesday, October 19th, grades 9 through 11 will sit for the PSAT Test. Seniors will have a holiday. • Undergraduate Awards are Tuesday, October 25th at 10:00 a.m. in the main gym. We will honor those students who achieved academic honors during the second semester of last year. • And finally, on October 31st, students will begin school at 8:45 a.m. and the faculty start at 7:45 a.m. with a faculty meeting. If you attended Back-To-School night, you know that I itemized the many projects along with the cost of each that we completed over the summer to keep the school plant in good order. I also mentioned that the two main projects during the school year will be the renovation of the library space into a digital learning center and landscaping the campus. We can begin the work because of a generous donation of $62,000 from the Kathy and Frank Dieter Foundation. I am so thankful for that. Obviously, we will have to find other money to complete the project, but this will be a good beginning. We will also work on landscaping the campus. I would love to see many flowers around campus for the students to enjoy! As we work on the landscaping plan, please watch for notices in the weekly email bulletin for specific plants you can bring to help with this project and get PSI hours for your contribution. We can all do this together! I close this letter with the hope that school has begun well for your student and for you. I know we pray together for your children, our students, that they each come to know themselves, their strengths, their weaknesses, that they each come to know the great work they are meant to do in the world, that they each come to know that together as a community, we can do even greater things. It is the community that nourishes us, makes us strong. I pray for your children and for each of you every day. I pray that we are open to every opportunity, to every gift of God’s grace as we live this year. I hope you find something valuable in this beautiful meditation by Thomas Merton:

BE YOU. Seeds of Contemplation Every moment and every event of man’s life on earth plants something in his soul. For just as the wind carries thousands of winged seeds, so each moment brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imperceptibly in the minds and wills of men. Most of these unnumbered seeds perish and are lost, because men are not prepared to receive them: for such seeds as these cannot spring up anywhere except in the good soil of freedom, spontaneity and love. ……”The seed is the word of God.”...Every expression of the will of God is in some sense a “word” of God and therefore a “seed” of new life…….. If these seeds would take root in my liberty, and if His will would grow from my freedom, I would become the love that He is, and my harvest would be His glory and my own joy. From New Seeds of Contemplation Thomas Merton

BE SUCCESSFUL.
Guidance & Curriculum: Ms. Yvette Vigón-Morffi - Vice Principal - ext. 231, Mrs. Casey Dunn - Guidance/Studies Coordinator - ext. 226 Standardized Testing Registration is open for the Fall SAT and ACT. If your student would like to take these standardized test(s) and has not registered yet, please do so as soon as possible. We encourage you to register online, for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com, and for the ACT at www.act.org. Please note that registration for the November SAT and the November ACT is just around the corner. For students planning to take an SAT II language test with listening, they must do so in November. We encourage students to register early and check with the admissions offices of the schools which they intend to apply to inquire if testing must be completed before December. Wednesday, October 19th, is the PSAT test day. The redesigned PSAT is excellent practice for the new SAT. The PSAT is tightly aligned with the redesigned SAT and will provide students with that chance to check in on their progress. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will take the PSAT, and seniors will have the day off from school. Students will need to be in their assigned classroom by 8:00am and should be dismissed no later than 11:30am. I have included a list of Principal’s Honor Roll, St. Anthony, and George Montgomery scholars for students in grades 10-12, based on their spring 2016 performance. I would like to congratulate these students for their outstanding achievement and dedication as Bishop Montgomery students. Those who have received the awards will be recognized at our Undergraduate Awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 25th. News for Seniors and Parents of Seniors On Friday, September 9th the guidance counselors spent a class period with each senior English class. A timeline was distributed and discussed with test dates, registration deadlines, application deadlines, and other important information are included. Remember to utilize Family Connection from Naviance. Family Connection is a web based application that enables our counseling office to offer a comprehensive website that you and your student can use to help in making decisions about colleges and careers. Family Connection is linked with Naviance, which we use in our office to track and analyze data about college and career plans, so it provides up-to-date information that is specific to Bishop Montgomery. Family Connection will allow your student to: • • • •
Keep track of the college process - build a resume, complete online surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers Research colleges - Compare GPA, SAT scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted in the past. College visits- Find out which colleges are visiting our school and when they will be here. Scholarships- All of the scholarships that we receive in the guidance office will be posted on Family Connection.

BE DYNAMIC.
Discipline: Ms. Betty Behen - Dean of Women - ext. 234, Mr. Lee Flores - Dean of Men - ext. 232 Medical Appointments/Attendance: pgs. 13 Parent-Student Handbook As a reminder, students who miss school due to a medical absence MUST bring verification from the doctor/dentist when returning to school to ensure that the absence will be regarded as “excused.” Also, please remember to call in the morning of your student’s absence or it will be officially noted as unexcused. Uniform: pg. 32 - 33 Parent-Student Handbook We are doing all that we can to ensure that ill-fitting clothes (pants too baggy or too long, shorts too short, etc.) not be sold to students. Students will be held accountable for any ill-fitting uniform items. Be advised parents, as primary educators and caretakers for your children, have the final responsibility. The deans are not accepting “but-that’s-the-way-the-uniform-company-sold-it-to-us” type of excuse as a way of justifying ill-fitting clothing. As a reminder, solid white, black or gray socks are required, shirts must be tucked in at all times, pants must be worn at the waist, and hair style/ color should comply with the BMHS policy. Students will be held in the Deans’ office if a dress code infraction cannot be corrected. Their absence from class will be recorded as unexcused with no make up permitted. BMHS jackets and sweatshirts are the only acceptable outerwear during the school day. Hooded sweatshirts or jackets are not permitted during the regular school day. Pick-Up and Drop-Off Sites: Due to the high volume of traffic on Torrance Boulevard after 7:30am, it will take longer to drop-off students at the drop-off point. To avoid the congestion associated with the traffic on Torrance Boulevard, please make an effort to drop-off your student(s) early. Please note that students are allowed to come onto the campus as early as 7:00am. Also, please make sure that your students have all their belongings ready to exit your vehicle the moment that you arrive at the drop-off point so that the flow of traffic is not delayed by students having to get their belongings from the trunk of the car. Finally, parents are advised NOT to use the professional buildings east of the school, the parking lot across the street, or Wendy’s as pick-up or drop-off sites before or after school. This, of course, also includes carpools. The doctors in the professional buildings have told us that it is a severe inconvenience when their lots are used for such purposes. Also, the white condominiums located to the west near the front of the school are not to be used for pick-up or drop-off. Please keep the driveway clear as you wait to enter campus. Failure to abide by these requests will result in disciplinary consequences for your student(s). Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated. Please read the attached flyer provided by the Torrance Police Department at the end of the Deans’ section of this newsletter. Student Parking In an attempt to be courteous to our neighbors, we request that our students who park off-campus do not park on the side streets off Henrietta Blvd. Students may park on Henrietta Blvd. Loitering: We are asking parents to please discourage your student(s) from loitering at Wendy’s before school and/or after school. Students are to purchase food and walk back to campus. Student Identification Cards Students are required to have their school ID card with them at all times when they are on campus or at any school related event or activity. A student’s failure to have their school ID card will result in a disciplinary violation. Students who do not have their school ID will not be allowed to attend school dances. For Students Riding a Bicycle to School Bicycle racks are provided on the east-side of campus between the Chapel and First Building. Please make sure your students secure their bikes to the racks using a reliable bike lock and/or cable. Please have your student follow all guidelines concerning bicycle safety including using a “fastened” helmet. The Helmet Law is stated below for your perusal. Section 21212(A) of the California Vehicle Code States: A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a non-motorized scooter, or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle, a non-motorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, as defined in Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code, or any other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet that meets the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), or standards subsequently established by those entities. This requirement also applies to a person who rides upon a bicycle while in a restraining seat that is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer towed by the bicycle.
BE ENGAGED.
*****STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP PROCEDURES***** Drop-off Procedures From the East: 1. Parents driving west on Torrance Blvd., who are making a left turn on to campus, must turn directly on to campus. They may not make a left turn into the East Parking Lot. 2. Parents must drive onto the campus and continue driving until they have arrived to the designated drop-off point located in the East Parking Lot. 3. Drop-offs are prohibited in front of the school. Parents must drop-off students in the designated passenger drop-off points located in the East Parking lot adjacent to the school. Parents who are conducting official business with the Main Office must park their vehicles in the East Parking Lot and walk to the Main Office. Parents will enter the East Parking Lot through the northeast entrance by the marquee. 4. The Security staff will be available to control traffic From the West: Parents driving east on Torrance Blvd. may not enter the campus. All parents driving east on Torrance Blvd. must proceed to enter the East Parking Lot in order to drop-off their students in the designated drop-off points. Students may not be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd. Please note that u-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a u-turn when heading west is on Torrance Blvd. and Prospect. 1.
Exiting the East Parking Lot 1. All drivers exiting the East Parking Lot must make a right turn only. Cars may not proceed onto the street until they have stopped at the stop sign. 2. Drivers may not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so is unsafe and will cause a delay for the other parents who are attempting to exit. Around the Neighborhood We encourage all parents to drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Blvd. is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to drop-off your students anywhere else, please refrain from dropping off your students at our neighboring businesses or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Also, please make sure to drop-off your students in areas that are safe. We have received many reports that students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of driveways, or in the middle of the street on Palos Verdes Blvd and on Henrietta. In the interest of the safety of all pedestrians and drivers, we encourage that students be dropped-off on campus where their safety can be monitored. Students Parking Off-Campus If your student parks on Henrietta, please remind he/she to be courteous and respectful to our neighbors. We request that your student not drive into the residential areas playing loud music or leave trash on the street. Our neighbors will welcome your student’s courtesy. The City of Torrance has asked our students not park on the side streets near Henrietta. Residents are unable to park in front of their homes when our students park on these residential side streets. Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your student(s) to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing Torrance Boulevard are either not using the appropriate crosswalks or when the signal light is blinking red. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety.

Cell phones should be kept in the off position. Cell phone use is prohibited in all buildings and classrooms regardless of the time of day. Any confiscated cell phone is subject to having its contents reviewed by an administrator. The only location a cell phone may be used is at the entrance to the Chapel between the hours of 2:10 – 3:00pm. Cell phones kept in backpacks during the school day or used throughout the school day will be confiscated and not returned until the end of the school day, after the bell has rung. In cases where a cell phone is confiscated the student will be issued a referral. It is the student’s responsibility to see the Deans to pick up the cell phone & referral at the end of the school day. The Deans will NOT call out a student to pick up the cell phone.

Activities: Mrs. Milana McDermott - Dean of Student Life - ext. 273 Hello from the Activities Office! While the school year has only just begun, there have been many activities and programs happening on campus. I have outlined some important business reminders, as well as some information on some upcoming events and activities. STUDENT IDs: Every effort was made to ensure that all students took an official school photo, and were issued a student ID for 2016-2017. However, it is the responsibility of the student to make sure they have a current student ID, as they are required to have it with them at all times while at school, and at all BMHS events throughout the year. If a student should lose their ID, it is their responsibility to order a replacement ID through the Activities Office immediately. The replacement fee is $20. Please remind your student to “guard their card.” Students who do not have their ID with them upon request will risk earning a violation. PARKING PERMITS: Parking permits have been distributed to students who purchased an on-campus parking space for the school year. Permits should be displayed clearly in the car windows during the school day, as outlined in the parking regulations. Cars without permits displayed and cars whose license plate numbers are not registered with the Activities Office will be ticketed and fined. Please remind your student to abide by the rules they received with the parking application, as tickets are as follows: 1st violation = $10; 2nd violation = $25; 3rd violation = $50. Parking policies will be enforced throughout the year in an effort to maintain a safe and secure campus. ACTIVITIES ASB and Class Officers have been busy planning and coordinating all of Bishop Montgomery’s activities for this year. The month of September was very busy! ALOHA WEEK: Aloha Week is a fun way to welcome everyone back to the new school year. Aloha Week welcomes students, faculty and staff with a variety of new and traditional events, including Club Awareness Day and the Big/Lil Sis Lunch. CLUBS FOR 2016-2017: Club Awareness Day was held on September 6th during lunch. This was an opportunity for students to find out more about the various clubs they might be interested in joining this school year. Students were invited to attend club meetings during Club Open House, which goes from September 7th through September 30th, so they could decide which clubs they wanted to be part of this year. Club Sign-ups are held during club meetings the last week of September. Lists of BMHS clubs and their meeting dates and times are posted in the 3rd building and are available in the Activities Office. This is a great way to be involved! BIG LIL’ SIS LUNCH: All senior and freshman girls were paired and the seniors welcomed their little sisters to Bishop Montgomery with goodies and a special picnic lunch on September 8th on the upper field. This is always a great way for the freshman girls to meet the seniors and learn more about BMHS! BIG KAHUNA HULA: The Big Kahuna Hula was our first dance of the year, and was well attended by students of all ages. This event showcased the talent of our own music production students, as well as the Improv Team, along with shaved ice and Hawaiian atmosphere. A great time was had by all! CLASS OPEN MEETINGS: Class officers held open meetings to invite ideas and participation from their classmates in upcoming activities, such as Homecoming Week class competitions and class masses. Encourage your student to get involved and help make their class activities successful this year! FRESHMAN OFFICER ELECTIONS: Our new class officers were elected on September 14th. They are in office just in time to get the class of 2020 enthused for Spirit Week and Homecoming in October! Congratulations to: Freshman Co-presidents: Sophia Bero & Andrea Zamora Freshman Senators: Rae Bennett, Meagan Moore & Daisy Rodriguez

BE FAITHFUL.
A MISSION ON A MISSION “We’re on a Mission from God” was said by Jake and Elwood Blues (The Blues Brothers, 1980) as they went out to save a threatened Catholic school from foreclosure by “getting the band back together.” We’re all “on a mission from God.“ As a noun, on mission can denote a place/housing where people live and cooperate as a community or as on an assigned task/vocation. On a mission as a verb denotes being sent! My love for the foreign and local missionary efforts for the poor has surely been an epiphany in my life and, if I may boast, “from the hood to Haiti being Christ’s comfort and the presence of Church” has surely been a “mission from God” that I never planned on! What a blessing! Last month I went to one of my favorite missions in Port Au Prince, Haiti, where 200+ orphaned children can’t hear or speak; they live poorly and seek to simply help each other not to feel left out. The insecurity and instability that comes with a life of silence and not being heard is a huge and emotional burden. Thank you to Concordia and the students here who voluntarily came forward to donate school supplies for the kids. Bishop Montgomery High School is a Mission on a Mission. Though it does not look like an apparent mission, as a Spanish mission would appear, it certainly is both a place and a journey that seeks to better an awareness of God and the sacredness of each and every life that is involved here. We are learning to cooperate with each other as Christ operates within and among us in the Spirit. Thanks to all of you who have welcomed the Spirit of BMHS to work among you. There is so much here, and I really wonder if we see, appreciate, and allow it All! I’m certainly not feeling, speech, or hearing impaired in proclaiming the goodness of this place! If I can help you in this Mission, on Your Mission, we’d join together on our “mission from God.” Fr. Ken Deasy
BE TECH-SAVVY.
Technology: John Hong - Technology Committee Chair - ext. 276, Brian Adams - Technology Curriculum Integration Specialist - ext. 272 All students are invited to bring a Chromebook to Bishop Montgomery. Currently, freshman and sophomore students are required to have a Chromebook. However, if you feel it would be beneficial to your student’s academic success and development, Bishop Montgomery High School would like to invite all students, in all grades to bring a Chromebook device to campus. Any Chromebooks brought to campus must enroll in our device management software before a student may use it on campus. Students should bring their device to Mr. Adams in the library, or to Mr. Echevarria‘s office in room 203. Students may only bring a Chromebook device to campus. Students are not permitted to have devices using Windows/Mac OS/or other operating systems. Students may not bring any other tablet or laptop. We ask that students bring a Chromebook that is at least model year 2013 or more recent. Please shop at smile. amazon.com to give back to Bishop Montgomery High School. Speak with Mr. Adams in the library if you’ve any additional questions. Bishop Montgomery High School is continually developing and improving our library space. Although we have retained a major portion of our physical book collection, over the summer we worked with an organization to donate thousands of our old and unused library books. Our donated books went to teachers and professors trying to build classroom and office libraries. Our library is now much more open and spacious. We have more room, seating, and computers than before for students. Shortly, we will be providing the majority of our fiction collection digitally through a service called OverDrive. OverDrive is a service used by thousands of public libraries nationwide to provide digital content. Soon BMHS students will be able to access digital books, audiobooks, and videos through any device from our own BMHS OverDrive lending library. More information to come.
