It seems fitting to me that Valentine’s Day and the beginning of Lent happen in the same month. Working daily during Lent to become new and whole in Christ, answering our individual calls to sanctity, giving our talents in the service of others, allowing ourselves to be transformed by the power of the Resurrection, are all acts of love in response to God’s love for us. I’ve shared this meditation of Thomas Merton’s many times before, but I think it bears repeating as Lent begins. Merton reminds us that we are not alone in our search for sanctity or in that desire to be transformed. We participate in that struggle and in that search for community together. We are never alone. He also reminds us that we are called to both the contemplative and the active life—to both prayer and action—and we do that, too, in concert with each other. “We share with one another the creative work of living in the world.” Again, we are not alone. All Christian life is meant to be at the same time profoundly contemplative and rich in active work. It is true that we are called to create a better world. But we are first of all called to a more immediate and exalted task: that of creating our own lives. In doing this, we act as co-workers with God. We take our place in the great work of mankind, since in effect the creation of our own destiny, in God, is impossible in pure isolation. Each one of us works out his own destiny in inseparable union with all those others with whom God has willed us to live. We share with one another the creative work of living in the world. And it is through our struggle with material reality, with nature, that we help one another create at the same time our own destiny and a new world for our descendants.--Thomas Merton. Most of our seniors have now completed their college applications and will turn their attention to the financial aid process. Those who wish to receive financial aid, regardless of the school they ultimately choose to attend, must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, more commonly referred to as the FAFSA. The US Department of Education has updated the FAFSA on the Web website for the 2016-2017 school year at www. fafsa.ed.gov The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the application for federal and state student financial aid. FAFSA applications for the 2016-2017 year will be accepted starting January 1 at www.fafsa.ed.gov California’s Cal Grant program requires the FAFSA to be filed by March 2, 2016. In addition, to receive Cal Grant award consideration, a student must have a school certified Grade Point Average (GPA) submitted by March 2, 2016 (Bishop Montgomery submits this for you, so you do NOT have to do anything for the GPA verification). Colleges will have their own scholarship and financial aid filing deadlines, sometimes earlier than March 2. Students should check on-line with every college under consideration for their scholarship and financial aid deadline. Because of the variation in state and college deadlines, it is highly recommended that you fill out the FAFSA as soon as you can after January 1 to ensure that you do not miss out on available aid. One thing to consider, however, is that the FAFSA asks for your tax return information for the current year. Often, this information might not be available until the end of January, at the earliest. Keeping this in mind, you can choose to either wait until you or your family files income taxes for the year or complete your FAFSA using estimates derived from the previous year’s tax returns and other documentation. (Note: If you do this, you will need to return later and correct any discrepancies between the estimated values and the current year’s tax returns.) Questions on the completing the FAFSA can be made to the Federal Student Aid Information Center email at http:// studentaid.ed.gov/resources#free-application-for. Each year, our counselors stress the importance of submitting the FAFSA as early as possible. The reason for doing so is to give you as much time as possible to review, compare, and analyze each school’s SAR. Having the entire month of April, and possibly part of March, to consider and weigh the financial impact of a college decision is critical in our opinion. Also, both the FAFSA and the Cal Grant forms must be submitted or postmarked no later than March 2nd. Hopefully, both you and your child have applied for and received a pin number to be used as the electronic signature for the FAFSA if you will be submitting online. College scholarships generally become more local and talent- or interest-specific during the second semester. Each scholarship opportunity that the school is made aware of in print form is summarized in the Family Connection, daily bulletin, and cataloged in the Guidance Center. Students are encouraged to actively pursue these opportunities, while remaining cognizant of the work involved. Many scholarship applications require as much work, if not more, than a college application. Please encourage your child to pursue appropriate opportunities where he or she will be a competitive applicant. We hope that you will discuss course selection with your child before re-registration on April 15. In addition, student questions will be answered regarding a four-year plan and what is required for college admission. If there are questions you have before these meetings take place, please contact your child’s counselor.
***Seniors*** Please note that any changes made to your schedule for the spring/second semester must be reported to every school to which you have applied. If you have submitted applications before your class change is made, please be sure that you email each school’s admissions office to let them know what change has been made and why. If you have not submitted your applications, then you may report the class change(s) within your application. It is VERY IMPORTANT to let the admissions office know as soon as possible as it may have a direct impact upon whether or not you are accepted/waitlisted/denied to the school. ***Honors/AP STUDENTS***

Sweatshirts: BMHS sweatshirts are the ONLY sweatshirts that are allowed. They DO NOT SHRINK, so please purchase a size appropriate for your student. All other sweatshirts will be confiscated and further disciplinary action will follow. During the 2nd Semester, Seniors are allowed to wear an official, non-hooded college sweatshirt of the college they will be attending. Is it an “Excused” or “Unexcused” Absence/Tardy?: A phone call to the Attendance Office does not necessarily “excuse” an absence or tardy. It merely lets us know that the parent/guardian was aware of the absence or tardy. The nature of the absence or tardy (“excused” or “unexcused”) will be determined by the Deans and Attendance Office. Refer to your Parent-Student Handbook for what constitutes an “excused” absence or tardy. No Messages. The Attendance Office and the Front Office staff do not deliver messages during the day. It is both time consuming and disruptive to classes. Addendum to the Parent Student Handbook regarding Cell phone, Smartphone, Smartwatch Policy CELL PHONES/SMARTPHONES/SMARTWATCHES: Students must keep cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches in lockers during school hours in the off position from the first bell of the day to the last bell of the day. Students may not use cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches during the school day. Cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches should be kept in the off position. Cell phone/smartphone/ smartwatch use is prohibited in all buildings and classrooms during school hours, the first bell of the day to the last bell of the day. Any confiscated cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches is subject to having its contents reviewed by an administrator. Cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches kept in backpacks during the school day or used throughout the school day will be confiscated and not returned until the end of the school day, after the bell has rung. In cases where a cell phone/smartphone/smartwatch is confiscated the student will be issued a referral. It is the student’s responsibility to see the Deans to pick up the cellphone/smartphone/smartwatch & referral at the end of the day. The Deans will NOT call out a student to pick up the cell phone/smartphone/smartwatch. Prom Time. Prom is just around the corner. As per the Parent-Student Handbook pg. 22, “The school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities pre- or post- Bishop Montgomery dances. The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” Prom Dance: Remember that your student must fill out the Prom Bid when bringing a non-BMHS student to the dance. The Guest Pass must be signed by the Discipline Office & turned in to the Bookstore by the deadline. The bid must also include a signature from the dean of the student’s school along with a stamp of the school seal. The Deans reserve the right to refuse any non-BMHS student from attending the Prom. All students and their guests are required to bring and show a picture ID card from their school. YOU are responsible for the behavior of your student’s guest. Prom Dress Attire. The dance is formal. Dress Code for Prom Please adhere to the following dress code for Prom, and do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you, or an invited guest, purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to the guidelines WILL NOT be permitted to enter the dance, and will be sent home. If you are asked to leave Prom, the bid money will not be refunded, and may result in disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired.

The length of the dress should be in accordance with the stated uniform dress code guidelines for skirts and shorts, as stated on page 32 of the BMHS Student Handbook. The dress material must be solid material throughout. Fitted dresses may not be excessively tight. Dresses should be comfortable for dancing and sitting. Neither backless nor strapless dresses are permitted. The back of the dress may not fall below mid-back. Dresses may not show a bare midriff or contain cutouts, which expose the torso (front or back). Ladies are reminded that the display of excessive cleavage is inappropriate and unbecoming. Just a reminder that the hotel requires that shoes remain on at all times while on the premises. Students attire should be appropriate, modest, and in good taste.
*****STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP PROCEDURES***** Drop-off Procedures Parents driving west on Torrance Blvd. 1. Parents driving west on Torrance Blvd., who are making a left turn, can come into the campus. 2. Parents may not make a left turn into the East Parking Lot. 3. Parents must drive onto the campus and continue driving until they have arrived to the designated drop-off point located in the East Parking Lot. 4. Drop-offs are prohibited in front of the school. Parents must drop-off students in the designated passenger drop-off points located in the East Parking lot adjacent to the school. Parents will enter the East Parking Lot through the northeast entrance by the marquee. 5. The Security staff will be available to control traffic Parents driving east on Torrance Blvd. 1. Parents driving east on Torrance Blvd. cannot enter the campus. All parents driving east on Torrance Blvd. must proceed to enter the East Parking Lot in order to drop-off their students in the designated drop-off points. Students may not be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd. Please do not block any driveways when waiting to pull into the East parking lot. Students may not be dropped off anywhere on Torrance Boulevard unless the driver is parked in a legal parking zone. Please note that U-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a U-turn is on Torrance Blvd. and Prospect. Exiting the East Parking Lot 1. All drivers exiting the East Parking Lot must make a right turn only. Cars may not proceed onto the street until they have stopped at the stop sign. 2. Please do not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so will cause a delay for the other parents who are attempting to exit. Picking-up and Dropping-off Off-Campus: All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Blvd. is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your students anywhere else, please refrain from
picking up or dropping off your students at our neighboring businesses or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your students in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being droppedoff by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of the safety of all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and dropoff procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus. Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind them to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings.

Activities: Mrs. Milana McDermott - Dean of Student Life - ext. 273 The Activities Department is gearing up for some exciting events and activities this semester. Here are a few highlights: Winter Spirit Week The Bishop community celebrates Winter Spirit Week, along with Catholic Schools’ Week, February 1st – 5th. We will recognize our winter athletic teams, as well as provide fun ways for our students to show their school spirit. Activities include a lunchtime kick-off with our band, drumline, color guard and spirit squads, the Junior Ring Mass and Blessing, class color day, “Lunch-a-palooza,” black and gold day, and we will end with the student vs. teacher volleyball game on Friday. Wednesday night is McTeachers Night at McDonalds on Torrance Boulevard. BMHS faculty will serve up McDonalds meals and help raise money for the senior class. Don’t miss out! Junior Ring Blessing – February 2nd The Junior Ring Blessing Mass is Tuesday, February 2nd Jostens will be on campus on Thursday, January 28th before school and during lunch, to distribute rings that have been paid in full. If you need information on your student’s ring balance, please contact Jostens directly at 805-987-4147 to ensure that your junior has their ring for the Ring Blessing. Contact the Activities Office if you need further information. Short Flag Team, Band, Drumline and Color Guard Competition Season January through April is competition season for our very talented short flag squad, band, drumline and color guard. These groups will be busy getting ready for their respective competitions on the weekends and they appreciate the support of the Bishop Montgomery community. Students and families are welcome to attend the competitions and cheer them on as they represent Bishop Montgomery. Students should listen to announcements for competition dates, or ask a member for more details. National Honor Society Induction Ceremony – February 16th Bishop Montgomery will proudly induct new members into the National Honor Society on February 16th. “The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.” For more information about Bishop Montgomery’s Chapter - organization, qualifications, and requirements - can be found under the “academics” tab on the school website http://www.bmhs-la.org. Blood Drive with Providence Little Company of Mary Hospital – February 24th Key Club will sponsor our annual blood drive on campus on Thursday, February 24th. All students must have parent permission in order to donate blood that day. Permission forms will be distributed during sign-up the weeks prior to the blood drive. Parents are encouraged to participate in this important program! This is a great way for our Bishop students, faculty, staff and parents to help support important needs in our local community. Ask your student for details on this event. They can contact a Key Club member for more details. ASB See’s Candy Bar Drive ASB will hold their annual See’s Candy Bar drive from February 9th-March 3rd. This drive helps fund the George Montgomery Leadership Scholarship which is given to two seniors each year, and helps offset other program expenses. Your support is appreciated! ASB Offices for 2016-2017 If your student is interested in developing leadership skills and getting more involved with student life at Bishop, maybe they’d like to serve as a member of student government. An informational meeting will be held during lunch in Activities on Wednesday, February 3rd. Applications will be distributed at the meeting. Students should listen to announcements for details.
Club Proposals for 2016-2017 Bishop Montgomery has many active clubs and organizations, with at least one sure to match the interests of each student. Clubs are a great way to be involved at BMHS. If students are interested in proposing a new club for next year, they must attend the information meeting during lunch on Tuesday, March 1st in the Activities Office. New club proposal forms will be available at this meeting. Thank you to all of you who contribute to the success of our many and diverse extracurricular activities. You truly add to the student experience at BMHS.
GRADUATION 2016 Graduation for the Class of 2016 will be held on Friday, May 27 in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only, and each graduating senior will receive seven tickets. These tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May. Questions? Feb Athletic Newsletter 2016 The Bishop Montgomery boys’ basketball team, led by head coach Doug Mitchell, has found itself in the national rankings in multiple polls that are published throughout the country. The Knights are off to a 16-0 start as they begin Del Rey League play this week. So far this season, the Knights have won all three tournaments in which they were entered - Trevor Ariza Westchester Tip-Off Classic, Mission Prep Christmas Classic, and the D1 Bound SoCal Tournament. Earlier this season, Coach Mitchell won his 600th game at BMHS when the Knights beat Trinity Classical HS 80-25 in the D1 Bound Tournament. BMHS Boys’ Basketball Rankings: Daily Breeze (South Bay): #1 LA Times (SoCal): #2 CalHiSports (State): #2 National: MaxPreps Xcellent 25: #21 MaxPreps Computer: #4 USA Today Super 25: #15 BallisLife.com: #14 Prep Nation: #22 Blue Star Media: #10 HS Hoops Elite: #16 SOCCER The BMHS boys’ varsity soccer team had a very successful week prior to Christmas, finishing 3rd in the 46th Annual South High Holiday Tournament. This is the best finish by BMHS since 1999, when they lost in the final to Santa Barbara. BMHS beat several large schools along the way, beating Ventura, Milikan and Los Alamitos before losing to Palos Verdes in the semi-final. The Knights beat Santa Barbara in the 3rd/4th place game. FALL AWARDS With all the fall sports seasons wrapped up, the awards season has started. Recently, the all-league teams were selected for boys’ & girls’ cross country, football, girls’ golf, girls’ tennis, and girls’ volleyball. SCSBOA Solo & Ensemble Festival – Saturday, April 16th We are again proud to host the Solo festival for the South Bay – students from many schools are scheduled to come here to perform for adjudication by the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association. Jazz Night – Thursday, April 21st, at the Retreat Center – 6:30-8:30pm In conjunction with our BMHS Art Show, our Jazz Band and Jazz Combo will open for a Special Guest Artist, to be announced soon! Spring Concert – Friday, May 13th – 7pm in the Main Gym It’s your chance to hear and see all of our performers together – come enjoy a night of great music and Colorguard performance. Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade - Saturday, May 21st Come see us in Torrance’s signature hometown parade! Jazz Band Performances - dates TBA By popular demand - of the students and parents - we’re scheduling several community performances around the South Bay this semester - more info coming! “Knight Music” Booster Club The “Knight Music” Booster Club represents the Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, Music Production, Video Production, and Music Ministry. Their meetings are usually on the same Monday nights as Athletic Booster Club and Mother’s Club, at 6:00 pm in room 318 – additional meetings are scheduled as needed. Please join them to help keep the many projects they organize rolling. We’re always practicing, planning, and organizing, including school concerts, local performances, competitions, parades, tours, and lots of other important things – come on in any day before or after school, 6:30 am - 3:30pm (although we’re often there earlier and later.) Don’t forget to pre-order your yearbook! The deadline to pre-order your yearbook is on your February tuition. This year, yearbooks are not automatically added on to your tuition. There are two ways to pre-order your yearbook: 1. Contact Jamey McElroy in the Tuition office at 310-540-2021 x225 or jmcelroy@bmhs-la.org and she can pre-order a yearbook for you. Please remember to include your student’s name and grade when emailing her. 2. Pre-order a yearbook using Smart Tuition: • Log in to your Smart Tuition account at https://parent.smarttuition.com/ • Add the Yearbook to your shopping cart and check out. A list of students who have pre-ordered a yearbook is posted at the Student Store. If your student’s name is ON the list, they have PRE-ORDERED a yearbook. After the February tuition the price of the yearbook increases and your student is NOT GUARANTEED a yearbook. Don’t miss out on this year’s memories!

WELCOME TO THE 2015-2016 BMHS Booster Club. The BMHS Booster Club is designed to provide support for all BMHS athletic programs. This is a great opportunity to consider joining the BMHS Booster Club. Membership is open to all BMHS families, not just those with student-athletes!! Members of the Booster Club volunteer their time at many athletic functions and provide support to the Athletic Director, Coaches, and Student-Athletes. Whether you are a NEW Bishop parent or a returning seasoned BMHS parent please plan on attending our monthly meetings. Please join us for the February meeting on Monday, February 22nd and the March meeting on March 21st. Both meetings @ 6:30 BMHS Library.

Damion Mendoza Scholarship- Due April 2016 The Mendoza Scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete 2015/2016 school year grade 9-11. Those wishing to apply must submit a 1 page essay on "What it means to be a student-athlete at Bishop Montgomery." Participation on a BMHS athletic team is mandatory to be considered for the scholarship. The scholarship amount is equal to (1) month's Catholic tuition for the 2016/2017 school year.
