AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2017

Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon - Principal

Dear Parents, Our theme last year, “Be More,” expressed our desire every day as a community to “be more” in every way and through our words and example to reach beyond ourselves daily to be instruments of God’s work in the world. This summer I read an essay by Danusha Veronica Goska in which she writes this: “When we study the biography of our heroes we learn that they spent years in quiet preparation doing tiny, decent things before one historic moment propelled them to center stage. Moments, if as animate, used the prepared to tilt empires.” It occurred to me that this is exactly how we should all strive to be more—to live life in a way that when we have the opportunity, we choose to do the tiny, decent thing.” This year, my hope is that this will be our focus—that at every opportunity we will try to do the “tiny, decent thing” and so be witnesses to Jesus’ message to love others as He loves us—and in that effort to each find a way to “be more.” I know that this school year will bring the inevitable challenges that come with growth as well as many moments to rejoice in our students’ accomplishments. Though we are not perfect, for we are all human, there is evidence of God’s grace at work here at Bishop Montgomery every day. I am so grateful for our students, our faculty and staff, and for you, our parents. Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! As we begin the school year, there are a few calendar dates to note:

th

Monday, August 21st, Back to School Night, 6:30 pm, Gym; Senior Parent Information Meeting, 5:30 pm, Gym. Student Dismissal 11:50 am

Monday, September 4th, Labor Day Holiday

Tuesday, September 5th, 7:45 am Faculty Meeting; 8:45 am Start

Friday, September 15th, 5:00-7:00 pm Welcome Frosh Family Barbeque

Tuesday, September 19th, Welcome Mass, 8:00 am, Gym

Thursday, September 21st. Big/Lil Sister Lunch

I want to note that the first grading period ends on Friday, September 22nd. These grades are the first progress report and so the first indication of how your students are doing in their classes. I encourage you to speak with your students about their grades and progress and to contact the teacher and or counselor should you have questions or concerns. It’s important to remember that your first point of contact is the teacher and that the earlier a concern or question is addressed, the better for your student’s progress. Finally, I want to close with a prayer that I’ve traditionally used at the end of my first newsletter. Life is often difficult and I know that as parents you have many, many obligations and challenges. I’m sure you struggle to manage all of them with grace—and to maintain balance in your busy lives. I hope you will find this prayer one that you return to often. I know I do. We pray to you, Lord, for the gift and grace of balance. May our lives be blessed with gracious, harmonious balance. May we invest ourselves in our work, yet not forget that it is you who is working through us. May we invest ourselves in activity, yet not neglect the prayer and reflection that gives our activity depth. May we invest ourselves in our tasks, yet not lack appreciation for the relationships close to our heart. Grant that we may be both serious and happy, both hard-working and relaxed, both passionate and at peace. Amen. Our Lady, Queen of Angels, Pray for Us. You are, as always, in my prayers. I know the challenge of being a parent, that constant dance of holding our children close and letting them go that can be such a source of anxiety as well as joy. As I keep you in my prayers, I ask that you also keep me and all of the members of the school community, especially our students, in yours. Sincerely,

Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon - Principal

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I hope that I’ll see you at Back to School Night where you’ll have the opportunity to travel to your students’ classes where their teachers will share the content and requirements for their courses. This is an important night as are all of the other means we use for communication: the Parent-Student Handbook, the monthly Parent Newsletter which includes the current month’s updated calendar, our school website where you can communicate with teachers via email as well as access student grades and monitor student progress. We also communicate with a weekly update via email that comes from our Communications Office, global telephone calls and emails when appropriate, with information on our school marquee, and through school mailings. We count on your attention to these messages as they will help you stay current with the activities of your student’s high school life.

Please note that October 11 is a mandatory school day for all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. Students will be dismissed by 11:30am on this day. BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT Bishop Montgomery High School administration and faculty invite all BMHS parents to the fall “Back-to-School Night,” on Monday, August 21, at 6:30pm in the BMHS main gym. The evening will commence with an informative parent meeting followed by a modified daily school schedule which will provide parents with an opportunity to meet their student’s teachers. THE ANNUAL BMHS FUNDRAISER The annual Bishop Montgomery fundraiser begins Friday, September 15 with the distribution of tickets to all students. The school relies on the proceeds of this major fundraiser as part of the operating budget. With parental support we expect 100% of the students to meet at least 100% of their quota of $250 (50 tickets x $5.00 each). The fall fundraiser is our school’s only fundraiser. Families with one or two students at BMHS are responsible for selling or buying 50 tickets ($250) per student. Families with three or more students are required to sell 40 tickets ($200) per student. Students who complete their quota will be eligible for daily cash drawings. In addition, monetary prizes will be awarded to the three top selling homerooms and individuals after the fundraiser concludes on Tuesday, October 24. Students who complete at least 50% ($125) of their quota by 8:30am on Tuesday, October 3 will have noon dismissal on that day. Students who complete 100% ($250) of their quota by 8:00am Tuesday, October 24 will have a free day on Monday, October 30. Please note that ticket stubs and money must be turned in together. Ticket stubs will not be accepted if not accompanied with the money. Ticket stubs will not be taken after 12:00pm Tuesday, October 24. The success of this fundraiser is linked to the enthusiastic participation of both parents and students. We encourage parents to double the amount of their support by investigating matching funds programs through the Human Resources Department of their companies. Thank you for your continued support.

DISCIPLINE

BISHOP MONTGOMERY HIGH SCHOOL

Ms. Betty Behen - Dean of Women - ext. 234 Mr. Lee Flores - Dean of Men - ext. 232

Dear Parents: Welcome to the 2017 - 2018 school year. Once again, we look forward to embracing the excitement and challenges of the new year together. The Discipline Office has a few important reminders. If you were unable to make the last uniform sales day at Bishop Montgomery, you may contact Norman’s Uniform directly at:

Norman’s Uniforms 371 West 6th Street San Pedro, CA 90731 (310) 832-8342 www.normansuniforms.com

The Discipline Office sincerely desires that parents and students comply with the uniform policies stated in the Parent Student Handbook. Please be aware that the school does not allow students to wear uniforms which do not fit properly. They should be neither too large, nor too tight. As the sweatshirts sold in the bookstore and Norman’s do not shrink, it is unnecessary to buy oversized items. Students must wear pants, shorts, and skirts hemmed to the prescribed length. Unhemmed or frayed pants are not appropriate and are not acceptable. Students should make no other alterations to any uniform items.

th

Please note the following: • Students choosing to wear skirts or shorts that do not fit properly, or skirts or shorts that have been altered so that they are shorter, are not appropriate and are not acceptable. In the interest of modesty and good taste, the privilege to wear skirts or shorts will be revoked for students who choose to alter the length of the items so that they are too short according to school guidelines. • The deans will detain any student who does not comply with dress code policy. The school will

If a student is absent from school due to a medical appointment, he/she must bring a signed medical slip from the doctor or the dentist in order to be readmitted. The Parent Student Handbook states “A medical absence/tardy not accompanied by a doctor’s note, will be considered unexcused.” Please note that if your son/daughter will be absent, regardless of the reason, you must call the Attendance Office and notify the Attendance Clerk the day of the absence. An absence will be considered unexcused, regardless of the reason for the absence, if the parent/guardian does not call the Attendance Office on the day of the absence. All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30am, and follow all procedures. The traffic flow on Torrance Boulevard is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. Please refrain from picking up or dropping off your students at our neighboring businesses or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, parking, or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your students in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants, or in the middle of the street. In the interest of the safety of all pedestrians and drivers, and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be droppedoff on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted, and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta, and Palos Verves Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus.

require a parent to bring appropriate attire in order for the student to attend class. The dress code states that students should maintain their natural hair color. If a student has altered his/her hair color during the summer, it is necessary for him/her to take steps to comply with the school rules. The dress code also states that the boys must have their hair cut above the collar, eyebrows and ears. Extreme styles are not permitted. Boys who do not comply with the hair length will not be allowed to attend class until they have cut their hair to the appropriate length. The dress code further states that the boys must be clean-shaven and may not have ear piercings or spacers. No students may display any body piercings or tattoos. Headbands, if worn, may not exceed more than one inch in width. Headscarves are not permitted.

DISCIPLINE

Students must keep cell phones in lockers, in the off position, during the school day. Your student may not use cell phones during school hours. If a cell phone is confiscated from a student during the school day, the phone will be returned at the end of the day, and the student will be issued a referral. Please feel free to call if you have any questions regarding school policy. Sincerely, Betty Behen Dean of Women

This is a great way for students to find out about BMHS clubs and have representatives answer any questions they might have. Wednesday starts Club Open House, which is another opportunity for students to stop by club meetings and decide which clubs they want to join.

BIG/LIL SIS LUNCHEON

Freshman girls will be welcomed to Bishop with our traditional Big/Lil Sis Lunch hosted by the senior class girls. This event is Thursday, September 21. Freshman girls will receive more information and details the first full week of school.

Do not be afraid to dream of great things!” We thank you for allowing us to serve the school community and help your children to seek out their God given gifts in order to “be more!” Co-Campus Ministers, Dorothy Morski & Amy Hendry

PARENT-SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT (PSI) Parent School Involvement is a program instituted by Bishop Montgomery for several reasons. 1. Provide a platform for social activities among parents. As a parent you know that a key indicator of an effective school is a high level of parental support of and involvement in curricular and extracurricular activities. 2. Provide parents with a feeling of ownership and investment. This is our school, our community, and we all want it to be the best school it can be. 3. Provide necessary assistance for the entire school community, including teachers, coaches, staff and students that would otherwise be an expense to the school. In this program, all parents are encouraged to make a commitment to ten (10) hours of school involvement per semester. PSI hours are given for any physical hours volunteered at Bishop Montgomery high School on projects benefiting multiple areas of the school, including, but not limited to: Student Activities Team Activities Campus Beautification Activities Student Organizations Office Classroom Campus Security and Traffic Control Involvement hours may be given for refreshments only if these refreshments are specifically requested by an organization or team. The maximum number of hours earned for baked goods or refreshments is 2 hours (unless a special need is met and this same need was pre-approved in writing by a BMHS administrator). PLEASE REMEMBER, EACH PSI HOUR IS WORTH $17.50 All parents are assessed a fee of $175.00 ($17.50 x 10 hours) per semester as a built-in accountability factor. The fee for both semesters ($350) is billed in March. To ensure credit for your service hours, please ask the coordinator of the event in which you are involved to sign the "Parent Student Involvement Form. At the completion of ten hours each semester, please send the completed " Parent Student Involvement Form" to the tuition office. PSI opportunities are often posted in the on-line monthly newsletter. Please Note: Hours that have not been worked will be billed on the March SMART TUITON INVOICE. Questions? Please contact the tuition office at 540-2021 x225.

PSI HOURS – PARENT VOLUNTEER SECURITY EVENTS SCHEDULE 2017-2018 If you are interested in volunteering for any of the events listed below, please e-mail Steve Miller at smiller@bmhs-la.org. Once your email is received, your name will be placed on the list for the event(s) you indicate. Each respective event list will be compiled only through e-mail, and names will be posted in the order they are received. You will receive email confirmation for the events/dates on which you have been placed. Please sign up for only 10 hours per semester, so that we may accommodate everyone interested in PSI hours. Please do not sign up and then not attend your assignment. We always receive more requests then we have positions, and it is unfair to those families who are denied a spot. Secondly, we then do not have enough volunteers for that event. You are providing our students (your children) with a valuable role of security, and it is important that we are there for them. I thank you in advance for helping us in this important endeavor.

It is recommended that you email your name, student name and grade, contact information (including email address) and all interested dates as soon as possible as events/dates fill up very fast. Please remember that each family is required to earn 10 hours of PSI each semester. Please sign up for only 10 hours per semester, so that we may accommodate everyone interested in PSI hours. Feel free to pass along this information to any other BMHS family as not everyone always reads the newsletter until it is too late. Again, thank you for your continued support of BMHS, and I look forward to seeing you at the events.

Athletics Booster Club WELCOME to the 2017-2018 BMHS Booster Club. The BMHS Booster club is designed to provide support for ALL BMHS athletic programs. Joining the Booster Club is easy and fun! Membership is open to all BMHS families, not just those with student-athletes. Members of the Booster Club volunteer their time at many athletic functions by working in the snack stand, helping with the 50/50 raffle, selling BMHS merchandise and helping to get new members like you! They also provide great support to the Athletic Director, Coaches and Student-Athletes. Also, an Annual Booster Club Membership provides entrance to all, non-CIF playoff, home games. Whether you are a new Bishop parent or a returning seasoned one, we welcome you to join our monthly meetings. Save the date and mark your calendar now for our first meeting of this new school year on Monday, August 28 at 6:30pm in the BMHS Library. See you there!

BMHS Athletic Boosters has funded amazing items for our school with your support. Last year alone, the Boosters donated $20,927 to our school athletics programs. We are definitely making a substantial difference and it is all because of you! Our teams have new uniforms, a new flatbed cart for the athletic trainer, a new baseball wind-screen, and we have awarded many scholarships to our amazing athletes. Thank you for all of your support! We could not do it without you, and it means so much to our school and to our children! Feel free to contact us at bmhsboosters@bmhs-la.org.
