From the Principal: Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon, Principal Dear Parents,

I am always so thankful for many things at Bishop Montgomery. I want to say thank you, first, for all of your prayers, notes, cards, and acts of kindness as a response to my Mother’s death on January 25th. Our school community, particularly the faculty, staff and our students have been such a source of comfort and strength. I am so grateful.

I do want to say thank you to all of you who completed the online evaluation of the school. We always appreciate the time and effort you invest in this process as it helps us to continue to evaluate and improve. And thank you, too, to all of you who contributed to the Queen of Angels Fund. You make a difference in our students’ lives. St. Paul says it best, “I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers.”

Congratulations to Ray Hadnett and Alyssa Heisen who have been chosen as our Christian Service Award representatives to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. They will be honored and receive their medals at a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Jose Gomez on Tuesday, March 14th at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Seniors most often receive their letters during March and April. The Class of 2017 is nearing the end of their journey as high school students and our prayers are with them as they make their plans to move forward!

Finally, my prayer for all of you is that the liturgical season of Lent which we begin on March 1st is a deeply prayerful

BE YOU. time spent in preparation of Holy Week. I share Thomas Merton’s meditation here hoping that reading it helps us to realize that each new day holds opportunities to receive God’s grace as well as to be an instrument of that grace for someone else.

For just as the wind carries thousands of winged seeds, so each moment brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imperceptibly in the minds and wills of men. Guidance & Curriculum: Ms. Yvette VigĂłn-Morffi - Vice Principal - ext. 231, Mrs. Casey Dunn - Guidance/Studies Coordinator - ext. 226 Re-registration Day is coming up on Thursday, March 23. Re-registration Day is a mandatory school day for all students grades 9-11. Guidance Counselors will be visiting classes during the first few weeks of March to review registration materials and assist with planning courses for the 2017-2018 school year. Feel free to contact us with any questions you have regarding your student.

Seniors As mentioned last month, many local organizations are now publishing and distributing scholarship applications.

Students who have attained high academic marks and are involved within BMHS and the community-at-large are strongly encouraged to apply for these grant awards. We have submitted GPA verifications electronically to the California Student Aid Commission. Ideally, both you and your student have applied for and received a pin number to be used as the electronic signature for the FAFSA if you are submitting online.

The Traffic Division of the Torrance Police Department and Bishop Montgomery HS appreciate your efforts in keeping our students and our community safe. Please continue to pick-up and drop-off your student at the pick-up and dropoff zone located in the east parking lot adjacent to the school.

DROP OFF PROCEDURES

Parents driving west on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When making a left turn into the west entrance onto campus may drive on to the campus.

2. There is no left turn into the east parking lot.

3. Please drive onto the campus and continue driving until you have arrived at the designated drop-off point located in the east parking lot.

4. There is no student drop-off in front of the school. Please drop-off students in the designated passenger dropoff points located in the east parking lot only. Parents will enter the East Parking Lot through the northeast entrance by the marquee.

5. Our safety officer are available to direct and control traffic Parents driving east on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When driving toward the campus, please do not drive onto campus. Parents are to drive east along Torrance Boulevard and enter the east parking lot when dropping of students in the designated drop-off zone. Students are not to be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd.

Please note - U-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a U-turn is at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Torrance Boulevard.

Exiting the east parking lot 1. The only legal exit out of the east parking lot is a right turn towards Palos Verdes Boulevard. All drivers exiting the east parking lot must make a right turn only.

2. Please do not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so is dangerous and causes delays for other parents attempting to exit.

PICKING-UP & DROPPING-OFF OFF-CAMPUS All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Boulevard is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your student(s) anywhere else, please refrain from doing so our neighboring businesses, apartment complex, or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your student(s) in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers

illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of safety for all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus.

Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus.

The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted, and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus.

Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind them to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings.

SAFETY In the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to pay attention while either walking home or waiting for their rides. We have received numerous phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. We have heard reports of students being distracted while listening to their mobile device, texting while walking or waiting, and not paying attention to their surroundings.

Please remind all students to be aware of their surroundings and be conscious to what is going on around them.

We have also been informed by our school resource officer that as of January 1, 2014, a law went into effect prohibiting underage drivers from using any mobile device while driving. This includes all hands-free and Bluetooth devices. Please remind your children to adhere to all traffic laws when driving.

PROM TIME Prom is just around the corner. As a reminder, “the school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities before or after Bishop Montgomery dances... The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” (Parent-Student Handbook, page. 22) Remember that your student must fill out the Prom Bid when bringing a non-BMHS student to the dance. The Guest Pass must be signed by the BMHS Discipline Office and turned in to the Student Store by the deadline.

The bid must also include a signature from the Dean of the guest student’s school, along with a stamp of the school seal. The Deans reserve the right to refuse any non-BMHS student from attending the Prom. All students and their guests are required to bring and show a picture ID card from their respective school. You are responsible for the behavior of your student’s guest.

DRESS CODE – PROM 2017 Please adhere to the following dress code for prom. Please do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you or an invited guest purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to these guidelines will be asked to leave and will not be permitted to enter the dance. If you are asked to leave, bid money will not be refunded as well as you may leave yourself open to disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired.

GENTLEMEN · A tuxedo or suit is required. · Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. · Dress shoes are required. · Please no earrings, sunglasses, hats, gloves, or canes.

LADIES · Two pairs of earrings may be worn in the lower lobe. Sunglasses are not permitted. · The length of the dress should be in accordance with the stated uniform dress code guidelines for skirts and shorts as stated on page 33 of the BMHS Student Handbook. · Dress must be solid material throughout. Dresses may not show a bare midriff or contain cutouts, which expose the torso (front or back). · Fitted dresses may not be excessively tight. Dresses should be comfortable for dancing and sitting. · Neither backless nor strapless dresses are permitted. The back of the dress may not fall below midback. · Ladies are reminded that the display of excessive cleavage is inappropriate and unbecoming.

Just a reminder that the hotel requires that shoes remain on at all times while on the premises. Student attire should be appropriate, modest, and in good taste. Freshmen, as well as guests over the age of twenty (20) are not allowed to attend prom.

JACKETS Have we forgotten? The only logo jackets acceptable to wear during the school day are official BMHS jackets or BMHS athletic team jackets. Students wearing logo jackets or jackets with graphics and emblems that are not affiliated with Bishop Montgomery High School or a BMHS athletic team will receive a violation/detention.

SWEATSHIRTS BMHS sweatshirts are the only permitted sweatshirts. They do not shrink, so please purchase a size appropriate for your student. No other sweatshirts are permitted and will be confiscated with disciplinary action to follow. During this spring semester, Seniors are permitted to wear an official, non-hooded college sweatshirt of the college they will be attending.

Activities: Mrs. Milana McDermott - Dean of Student Life - ext. 273 Winter Spirit Week/Catholic Schools Week The Bishop community celebrated Winter Spirit Week during Catholic Schools Week, January 30th – February 3rd, and it included some fun activities for the week. We were entertained by the color guard and spirit squads as they kicked off the week with a lunchtime performance. The juniors were welcomed as upper classmen at the Junior Ring Mass & Blessing, and students were invited to show their class spirit on class color day. One of the highlights of the week was the BMHS faculty serving up meals at the 4th Annual McTeachers’ Night at McDonald’s. Lunchapalooza on Thursday showcased a whole new student volleyball game on the Lower Field. The seniors and the freshmen teamed up to take on the juniors and the sophomores as their classmates cheered them on. The week wrapped up with Black & Gold Day and Student Appreciation Day on Friday with cookies for the student body. Thanks to everyone for their spirited participation!

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony The National Honor Society recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. BMHS held its fifth induction ceremony on February 13, and is happy to announce that we inducted 46 students from grades 10 - 12 into our chapter. Congratulations to these students on this wonderful achievement. More information about the National Honor Society can be found on the website under “Academics.”

HOBY Conference Representatives The Hugh O’Brien Youth (HOBY) Leadership Conference is a three-day conference for high school sophomores.

The sophomores that attend HOBY are selected because of their leadership abilities and roles. Approximately 180 sophomores from all around Southern California will attend the conference this summer.

The goals of the conference are: · To seek out, recognize, and develop leadership potential · To encourage and assist students in their quest for self-development and self-identification · To introduce potential leaders to today’s recognized leaders · To explore America’s incentive system, the democratic process and community service Congratulations to the following students who will represent Bishop Montgomery High School at this year’s conference: 1. Applications for 2017-2018 Class Officers This is an important time as students select their student government leaders for the next school year. Student government provides an excellent opportunity for students to hone leadership skills and take an active role in their school community. Please encourage your students to run for an office and get more involved in their school next year.

BE A PART.

CLASS OFFICERS: If your student is interested in running for class office, they should attend a mandatory informational meeting on Wednesday, March 8. Application packets will be distributed only at this meeting and will be due on Wednesday, March 15.

Blood Drive with Providence Little Company of Mary Hospital Key Club will sponsor our annual blood drive on campus Thursday, March 30. Sign-ups will take place in the senior lunch area the middle of March. This is a great way for our students, faculty and parents to help support important needs in our local community. Parents interested in donating can call the Activities Office for more information. Thanks to all the students, faculty and parents who participate this year.

Club Proposals for 2017-2018 Bishop’s active club program continues to be a great way for students to become more involved in student life. Club proposals for next school-year will be accepted this spring. If students are interested in proposing a new club, they must attend the lunch meeting on Thursday, March 2 in the Activities Office. Students are responsible for defining the purpose and goals of the club, recruiting a faculty moderator, and should be prepared to use this as an opportunity to develop their leadership skills. They should be committed to making the running of this club a priority. Approval for all 2017-2018 clubs will be finalized by the end of March. Further details on dates and deadlines will be given during morning announcements.

Spirit Squad, Band, and Color Guard Applications for 2017-2018 Is your student interested in trying out for one of these groups? If so, they must attend the appropriate informational meeting and pick up an application. Both new and returning members are required to attend the information meeting. Students should listen to announcements for dates and details.

Spring Spirit Week Planning is underway for Spring Spirit Week March 13 – 17. We look forward to honoring our spring varsity athletes and will have more opportunities for students to show their school spirit at Class Color Day and Black & Gold Day. Highlights of this week will include the Battle of the Bands during lunch and Friday night’s Sadie Hawkins Dance. Students should listen for announcements for more details. Show your spirit, Knights!

Bishop Ambassadors Bishop Ambassadors is a leadership organization that promotes student involvement in marketing our school to prospective families. Bishop Ambassadors are actively involved in Back to School Night, Open House, HSPT Testing Day, Freshman Registration, and Feeder School Visits. Applications will be distributed this spring for 2017-2018. Interested students should listen to announcements for more details on application dates and deadlines.

Senior Actitvities Specific information regarding senior events including Senior Luau, Prom, Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation is sent home in a detailed letter the beginning of March. Watch for your letter and contact the Activities Office if you do not receive one. Please pay special attention to dates and deadlines so that you do not miss out on these important senior activities.

There are many upcoming activities this spring for all Knights! Please encourage your students to participate in these upcoming events. Their involvement in these activities makes for great high school experiences and wonderful memories for years to come!

Athletics: Mr. Eric Wood - Athletic Director - ext. 269, Mr. Ed Hodgkiss - Assistant Athletic Director - ext. 260, Ms. Camille Buckley - Assistant Athletic Director - ext. 262 STUDENT-ATHLETES SIGN LETTERS-OF-INTENT Three outstanding student-athletes made their college commitments official on Wednesday, February 15 at a ceremony on campus.

Kara Montilla ‘17 signed to continue her soccer career at New Mexico State University.

Alexa Wagner ‘17 signed with UC San Diego.

London Williams’ ‘17 volleyball career will continue at St. Ambrose University (IA).

Bishop Montgomery senior Bernard Amofa ‘17 made it official and committed to the University of San Diego to continue his football career. Amofa is the BMHS career leader in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving TD’s. He also holds the school record for receptions in a game with 10. He accomplished the feat twice, once in 2015 and once in 2016.

COACH MITCHELL NOTCHES 650TH CAREER WIN Boys’ Basketball Head Coach Doug Mitchell won his 650th career game when his squad beat Serra 8559 on the road on Wednesday, February 1. With the win, the Knights also captured their 5th straight Del Rey League title and the 18th under Coach Mitchell. Mitchell has a record of 639-171 since taking over the program in 1989-90. Prior to coming to Bishop Montgomery, Mitchell was the head coach at his alma mater, South Torrance High School, where he had 11 wins.

WINTER SPORTS Boys’ and girls’ soccer have completed their seasons. Boys’ and girls’ soccer will have their banquets in March. Please check website for dates and locations.

Both boy’s and girls’ basketball teams are heading into Championship play. Good luck to both our boys’ and girls’ teams! Go Knights!

Since the fund was created, close to $500,000 has been donated by Bishop Montgomery parents, past parents, alumni and friends. You should have received the Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance letter from Ms. Libbon, or you will receive it soon. We ask that you consider making a gift of $100. GRADUATION 2017 Graduation for the Class of 2017 will be held on Friday, May 26 in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only, and each graduating senior will receive nine tickets. These tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May. Questions? Performing Arts: Mr. Eric Hankey - Instrumental and Vocal Music Director JAZZ BAND & JAZZ COMBO PERFORM IN SANTA CRUZ AND SAN FRANCISCO On March 17, the BMHS jazz groups will perform for the third time at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival, an offshoot of the Monterey Jazz Festival. On the first day, after performing, receiving instruction from top jazz performers, and listening to other high school jazz groups, they will attend an outstanding evening concert of professional jazz musicians. Next, they will head into San Francisco, to perform at Golden Gate Park the very next day and tour the city! Finally, on the way out on Sunday, they will stop at Old Mission San Juan Bautista for Mass and a little bit of history. Good luck!

MUSIC DEPARTMENT SENIORS PERFORMING WITH ECC STUDIO JAZZ BAND Two of our excellent senior musicians have been accepted to perform with the El Camino Community College Studio Jazz Band for this semester, even before they graduate! Jeremiah Deomano ‘17 and Kenneth Dixon ’17 have been outstanding members of our music department ensembles for the past four years, and this is another laurel to add to their commendations. Thank you to Dr. Alan Chan, director of the ECC Studio Jazz Band for all of his work supporting and encouraging music at all levels.

BMHS HOSTING AREA SOLO & ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL We are again fortunate and proud to host a Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) Solo & Ensemble Festival here at Bishop Montgomery High School on Saturday, March 25 in the St. Anthony Student Activity Center and Schneider Retreat Center. This event brings approximately 100 of southern California’s best school-age musicians, including our own BMHS students, to perform for rating and comments from professional adjudicators. Students who perform well at this festival are invited to Southern California Regionals and All-State Honor ensembles.

JAZZ NIGHT IS COMING! ARTS FEST WEEK APRIL 3 - 7 Save the date - Thursday, April 6 marks the 4th annual Jazz Night! We look forward to great performances, outstanding guest artists, beautiful studio are seeing you all there!

KNIGHT MUSIC BOOSTER CLUB The Knight Music Booster Club represents the Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, Music Production, Video Production, and Music Ministry. Their meetings are usually on the same Monday nights as Athletic Booster Club and Mother’s Club at 6:00 pm in Room 318 – additional meetings are scheduled as needed. Please join them to help keep the many projects they organize rolling.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT HOURS We are always practicing, planning, and organizing school concerts, local performances, competitions, parades, tours, and many other important things – come on in any day before or after school between 6:30 am - 3:30pm (although we’re often there earlier and later). BE SPIRITUAL.

Campus Ministry: Dorothy Morski - Co-Campus Minister - ext. 243, Amy Hendry - Co-Campus Minister - ext. 236, Fr. Ken Deasy - Chaplain - ext. 236 CAMPUS MINISTRY This March we reflect on St. Patrick’s words, “If I have any worth, it is to live my life for God so as to teach these peoples; even though some of them still look down on me.” Although it might not always be easy or comfortable, we continue to teach others in words and actions about how to live a life in Christ. The students strive daily to put this into action.

We also look forward to the start of Lent. On Wednesday, March 1 we begin the Lenten Season and Ash Wednesday with a school-wide Mass in the gym. The ashes we receive are a sign of humility, repentance, and renouncing pride. It prepares us for the three aspects of Lent of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. In fasting, we deprive ourselves of a necessity in order to remind us of our utter dependence on God. We give alms by giving of our talents, goods, or money in order to help others. We share ourselves for the service of others.

Prayer is our longing to connect with God. We are meant to be in relationship with both God and others, and this is our way to improve our communication with others. We are readying ourselves for celebrating Christ’s Resurrection. There will be many opportunities throughout these forty days to help students reflect and participate in the prayer, fasting, or almsgiving.

RETREATS March is a very busy month for our Seniors going on Kairos. This is a great way to fellowship with other parents, learn about our school and most importantly, get involved in your child’s education. In addition, you have an opportunity to earn PSI HOURS while meeting new people.

There are twelve (12) Mothers’ Club events during the year that offer opportunities to fulfill your hours, either by chairing and event, working at one, or set up & clean up duty.

Athletics Booster Club

WELCOME to the 2017 BMHS Booster Club. The BMHS Booster club is designed to provide support for ALL BMHS athletic programs. Joining the Booster Club is easy and fun! Membership is open to all BMHS families, not just those with student-athletes.

Members of the Booster Club volunteer their time at many athletic functions by working in the snack stand, helping with the 50/50 raffle, selling BMHS merchandise and helping to get new members like you! They also provide great support to the Athletic Director, Coaches and Student-Athletes.

Whether you are a new Bishop parent or a returning seasoned one, please plan on attending our monthly meetings. Please mark your calendar for our upcoming meetings on March 20th and April 10th at 6:30p.m. in the BMHS Library, see you then.

Congratulations to the 2016 Damien Mendoza Scholarship Winners of One-Month Tuition: Carlos Bernal Class of 2017 and Erin Hall Class of 2018!

The Mendoza Scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete who submit the winning essay of “What it means to be a student-athlete at Bishop Montgomery.” Essays for the 2017 Damien Mendoza Scholarship are due to Mr. Wood, our Athletic Director no later than April 17th.
