I want to begin this letter with congratulations. Ray Hadnett and Alyssa Heisen have distinguished themselves with their concern for others, their willingness to serve, and their witness to faith in action. They, along with the other representatives from our Catholic high schools, were honored at a special Mass at the Cathedral on March 14th. Congratulations as well to all of our undergraduate awardees, especially our Students of the Semester for the fall semester of this year: Class of 2020 Jacqueline Raetz-Vigon and Joseph Murphy Class of 2019 Katherine Dang and Matthew Norambuena Class of 2018 Sophie Shapiro and Christian Singson Class of 2017 Caroline Cusolito and Sean Carnahan I also want to congratulate the newest inductees of the National Honor Society and our Girls’ and Boys’ State Representatives: Boys’ State: Kevin O’Donnell, Jackson Anderson and Ryan Simone (alt); Girls’ State: Caitlyn Kester, Isabella Pilon (alt), Anna Quast (alt) And congratulation to our Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams who as I write this are entering State Competition after winning the Southern Section CIF Championships in their Divisions. We have much to be thankful for and to be proud of!

As we celebrate Easter and the promise of new life, I am reminded that our rebirth in Christ, the new life we have through His Resurrection is the most powerful sign of spring. Our students are full of life, full of promise, full of love— each of them a sign of the hope that we can all become new in Christ by committing ourselves to our mission to love others as God has loved us. This simple prayer is one I pray often for all of the many blessings I receive every day here at Bishop Montgomery. Let us be grateful when we are able to give, for many do not have that privilege. Let us be grateful for all those who share their gifts, for we are enriched by their giving. And let us be grateful even for our needs, so that we may learn from the generosity of others. On behalf of the Administration, Faculty, and Staff, I want to wish you a Happy Easter. The life of Jesus doesn’t end with the Crucifixion but is fulfilled in the Glory of the Resurrection, the greatest celebration of the Church. I wish you a joyous Easter! Guidance & Curriculum: Ms. Yvette Vigón-Morffi - Vice Principal - ext. 231, Mrs. Casey Dunn - Guidance/Studies Coordinator - ext. 226 March is the month when most colleges and universities notify applicants of their acceptances for the fall 2017 semester. We ask that you keep our seniors in your prayers as they await their decisions. They are certainly a competitive group and we are confident that many will be admitted to their first-choice schools. Please be aware that most colleges and universities require students to submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) form by May 1 for the school they will attend. Waiting until May 1 is often a prudent decision, as you will likely have an opportunity to attend an admitted student’s reception and are able to more fully analyze offers of financial aid. Advanced Placement exams will take place Monday, May 1 through Friday, May 12. All morning tests will begin at 8:00am and all afternoon tests at 12:00pm. Discipline: Ms. Betty Behen - Dean of Women - ext. 234, Mr. Lee Flores - Dean of Men - ext. 232 UNIFORMS Please review pages 32-34 of the Parent-Student Handbook with your child to ensure that there is a clear understanding of the uniform policy. Students may leave the house looking one way, but appear differently when they come on campus. There is no change in any policy. Students are constantly reminded: · to properly hem the bottom of his/her pants so that they do not bunch up on top of the shoes. If a parent is worried that the pants will be too short as their son/daughter grows, a temporary stitched hem can still be sewn in and let down as he/she grows. · that pants need to be worn at the natural waist, not drooping at the hips or lower. Some young men have pants drooping so low that their underwear is exposed. Many students are wearing pants that are 4” - 6” bigger in the waist than they should be. The waist needs to be taken in if the pants are large. · that both polo shirts and oxford shirts should be tucked in all the way. Many students leave their shirts untucked and fold them under so that they only “appear” tucked in. · that the only jackets allowed are Bishop Montgomery jackets. The only acceptable sweatshirts are official BMHS sweatshirts. · Page 17 of the handbook clearly states that the flagrant disregard for the dress code is grounds for a referral or more severe repercussions. The uniform policy is strictly enforced by faculty and administrators. · that a student will be detained in the Attendance Office if the dress code infraction cannot be corrected. The Attendance Office will make an attempt to contact the parent so that the uniform item that is missing will be brought to the student before the student is allowed to return to class Parent-Student Handbook, page 13) HAIRSTYLES As we approach spring break, please remember that exaggerated hairstyles and colors are not permitted. Furthermore, boys must have their hair cut above the eyebrows, (mid) ears, and collar. This includes sideburns. Students who do not comply with this requirement will not be allowed to attend classes. Earrings are not allowed for men and only 2 pair of earrings is allowed for ladies. (Parent-Student Handbook, page. 33) DETENTIONS With a small number of days left in the school year, there are even less detention days. Detentions take precedence over athletic practices. Arrangements can be made for missing detention due to illnesses, medical appointments, athletic games/meets, and tutoring. Remember that disregard for an assigned detention is cause for a referral and may result in probation (Parent-Student Handbook, page 15). Remember, life is much easier when there is no detention to serve in the first place! PROM TIME Prom is just around the corner. As a reminder, “the school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities before or after Bishop Montgomery dances... The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” (Parent-Student Handbook, page. 22)
BE ENGAGED.
Remember that your student must fill out the Prom Bid when bringing a non-BMHS student to the dance. The Guest Pass must be signed by the BMHS Discipline Office and turned in to the Student Store by the deadline. The bid must also include a signature from the Dean of the guest student’s school, along with a stamp of the school seal. The Deans reserve the right to refuse any non-BMHS student from attending the Prom. All students and their guests are required to bring and show a picture ID card from their respective school. You are responsible for the behavior of your student’s guest. DRESS CODE – PROM 2017 Please adhere to the following dress code for prom. Please do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you or an invited guest purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to these guidelines will be asked to leave and will not be permitted to enter the dance. If you are asked to leave, bid money will not be refunded as well as you may leave yourself open to disciplinary action. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired. GENTLEMEN · A tuxedo or suit is required. · Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. · Dress shoes are required. · Please no earrings, sunglasses, hats, gloves, or canes.
LADIES · Two pairs of earrings may be worn in the lower lobe. Sunglasses are not permitted. · The length of the dress should be in accordance with the stated uniform dress code guidelines for skirts and shorts as stated on page 33 of the BMHS Student Handbook.

· Dress must be solid material throughout. Dresses may not show a bare midriff or contain cutouts, which expose the torso (front or back). · Fitted dresses may not be excessively tight. Dresses should be comfortable for dancing and sitting. · Neither backless nor strapless dresses are permitted. The back of the dress may not fall below midback. · Ladies are reminded that the display of excessive cleavage is inappropriate and unbecoming. Just a reminder that the hotel requires that shoes remain on at all times while on the premises. Student attire should be appropriate, modest, and in good taste. Freshmen, as well as guests over the age of twenty (20) are not allowed to attend prom.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE TUITION OFFICE REMINDER TO ALL SENIOR PARENTS FINAL PAYMENT The final tuition payment for Seniors is due Monday, May 1, 2017. PAST DUE ACCOUNTS Past due accounts must be paid with a credit card, money order, or cash. No personal checks will be accepted at this late date for past due accounts. FINAL EXAMS All accounts must be paid - in full – by Monday, May 8 for student to be eligible to sit for final exams. DIPLOMAS A student’s diploma will be held until his or her account is paid in full.

Activities: Mrs. Milana McDermott - Dean of Student Life - ext. 273 Spring brings the 2017-2018 ASB and class officer elections, Spirit Squad tryouts, Spring Spirit Week, Arts Fest and senior activities. It is a busy time on campus, so please remind your students of these dates and don’t let them pass up these opportunities to get involved!
Student Leadership Day for Middle School Students
Bishop Montgomery partnered once again with The Association of Catholic Student Councils to host a Student Leadership Day on Friday, February 17. Over 200 middle school students from all over the Archdiocese visited our campus and participated in workshops facilitated by Bishop Montgomery students. These presentations encourage middle school students to step forward and lead, practice teamwork, and apply their leadership skills. Students learned about programs that serve underprivileged communities, and how to put our Catholic Faith into action.
ASB and Class Officer Elections
Newly elected officers will join in regular ASB and class officer meetings once elected. These newly elected officers are expected to attend the summer leadership training and planning meetings in May and June.
Spirit Squad for 2017-2018
Applications for our Song Team were distributed at an information meeting in the Student Activity Center on March 8, and applications for the Short Flag Team will be distributed during lunch on March 22 in the Activities Office. All potential applicants must have all their paperwork on file by March 27 in order to participate in workshops and tryouts in March and April. Students can stop by the Activities Office for more information.
Spring Spirit Week
Bishop celebrated Spring Spirit Week the week of March 13-17. The week was full of activities and opportunities to show class and school spirit while spring varsity athletes are recognized. Battle of the Bands was held during lunchtime, along with our traditional Class Color Day and Black & Gold Day. Students enjoyed an extended lunch period on Thursday for Lunchapalooza, which featured performances by student bands, and the week’s activities ended with a All About the 90’s Sadie Hawkins Dance on Friday, March 17.
Bishop Ambassadors
Bishop Ambassadors is a leadership organization that promotes student involvement in marketing our school to prospective families. Bishop Ambassadors are actively involved with Back to School Night, Open House, HSPT Testing Day, Freshman Registration, Feeder School Visits to name a few. Applications will be distributed this spring for 2017-2018 school year. Interested students should listen to announcements for more details on application dates and deadlines. Seniors Specific information regarding senior events, including Senior Luau, Prom, Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation, was sent home in a detailed letter on March 10. Information is posted on the BMHS website. If you did not receive your letter, please contact the Activities Office in order to get a copy. Pay special attention to dates and deadlines so that you do not miss out on these important senior activities. I look forward to seeing you and your students involved in these upcoming events. Athletics: Mr. Eric Wood - Athletic Director - ext. 269, Mr. Ed Hodgkiss - Assistant Athletic Director - ext. 260, Ms. Camille Buckley - Assistant Athletic Director - ext. 262 Girls' & Boys' Win CIF Titles The Bishop Montgomery girls' and boys' basketball programs made more school history when they captured CIF titles in their respective divisions. On Friday, March 3 at Azusa Pacific University, the girls' beat Huntington Beach 41-38 in dramatic fashion to win the CIF-SS Division 1A title. It was the 8th CIF title for the girls' program and their 3rd title in the last four years. The girls' overcame a late deficit and some cold shooting to beat Huntington Beach before a large contingent of BMHS students, family, and friends. Senior Jessica Malazarte '17 hit two late three-pointers and junior Sophia Carroll '18 sank two free throws with seconds remaining to clinch the win for the Lady Knights (21-9). For Malazarte, it was her third title in her four years at BMHS. Also significant in the win was the history made by BMHS head coach Noelle Quinn '03. In just her first year as head coach, Quinn became only the second person in school history to win CIF titles as both a player and a coach. Quinn, a BMHS athletic hall of fame inductee, won three CIF titles (and four state titles) as a player at BMHS. The first person to achieve this accomplishment was Kit Schwartzman '86, who won soccer titles as a player and coach. On Saturday, March 4th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, the boys' basketball team (27-2) beat Mater Dei 70-55 to win the CIF-SS Open Division title. It was the program's 7th CIF title and the 6th for head coach Doug Mitchell. The Open Division is widely regarded as the toughest division in the nation. The Knights entered the game ranked first in the state and seventh in the nation. Like the girls' game the night before, the boys' overcame a late deficit to win the title. The Knights used a fourth quarter 20-4 run to put the game away. The win was punctuated by a 360-degree dunk by senior Ethan Thompson '17, who was named player of the game. He finished with 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.

This April we look forward to the celebration of Easter. As Saint Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:14, “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” We have been working during Lent to prepare ourselves for his death, and ultimately his Resurrection. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we have prepared our hearts to be filled with the gift of his ultimate sacrifice. Hopefully, you will continue to let God work in and through you. The journey doesn’t stop here.
RETREATS
Thank you for all of your support, love, and prayers for our Seniors attending their Kairos retreats. We pray for all the retreatants from our past three Senior retreats.
SERVICE
Thank you to all students and families who donated to the March Denim Day. As we look to our April Denim Day on Wednesday April 5th your generosity is always appreciated for each cause we are supporting. Thank you for bringing in your $2 or more to help. May He bless you for your generosity of giving prayers and financial support to others in need. We also appreciate your help in our Pennies for Patients during the month of March. We also look forward to Earth Week and acknowledging our part to be good stewards of creation as we are called to be.

Whether you are a new Bishop parent or a returning seasoned BMHS veteran, Mothers’ Club is the place to be to get your PSI hours! Please attend our next meeting, Monday, April 10 at 7:00pm in the Faculty Center building next to student drop-off parking lot. This is a great way to build fellowship with other BMHS parents, learn about our school and most importantly, get involved in your child’s education. In addition, you have an opportunity to earn PSI hours while meeting new people. There are twelve (12) Mothers’ Club events during the year that offer opportunities to fulfill your hours, either by chairing and event, working at one, or set up & clean up duty.

Athletics Booster Club Welcome to the 2017 BMHS Booster Club! The BMHS Booster club is designed to provide support for ALL BMHS athletic programs. Joining the Booster Club is easy and fun! Membership is open to all BMHS families, not just those with student-athletes. Members of the Booster Club volunteer their time at many athletic functions by working in the snack stand, helping with the 50/50 raffle, selling BMHS merchandise and helping to get new members like you! They also provide great support to the Athletic Director, Coaches and Student-Athletes. Whether you are a new Bishop parent or a returning seasoned one, please plan on attending our monthly meetings. Please mark your calendar for our upcoming March 20 and April 10 meetings at 6:30pm in the BMHS Library. See you there! Congratulations to the 2016 Damien Mendoza Scholarship Winners: Carlos Bernal, Class of 2017 and Erin Hall, Class of 2018! Carlos & Erin both received onemonth free tuition! The Damien Mendoza Scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete who submit the winning essay of “What It Means to be a Student-Athlete at Bishop Montgomery.” Essays for the 2017 Damien Mendoza Scholarship are due to the BMHS Athletic Director Mr. Wood no later than April 17.
Congratulations to the 2016 Kelly Nolan Scholarship Winners: Bernard Amofa, Football and Briana Martin, Girls’ Volleyball. Bernard and Briana both received $100 for the Fall Sports Fee. BMHS Athletic Boosters has funded amazing items for our school with your support: From 2015 to 2017 Boosters has donated $21,953 to our school athletics. We are definitely making a substantial difference and it is all because of you! Our teams have new uniforms, we have a trainer flat bed cart, a new baseball wind screen and we have given many scholarships to our amazing athletes. Thank you for all of your support we couldn’t do it without you and it means so much to our school and our children!
