The 2016-2017 school year is almost over and the seniors, as always, are counting down the days. There are very few regular school days left for them! I know we all pray for them as they look forward to new beginnings and for their parents for whom this time is so bittersweet. Our children grow in age and grace both with our help but also in spite of us. I look at our seniors and I see the children who came to us in freshman year and at the same time see the young men and women of today as well as the persons they will become in the future. Their growth is miraculous, really, and each of them is such a gift. Do keep them and their parents in your prayers. This is a special Mass, our last opportunity as the 2016-2017 school community to join in prayer together in the gym before our seniors leave us. I hope many of our seniors’ mothers will be present, but if you cannot attend, know you and your intentions will be in our prayers.

BE YOU. Just a reminder that each senior will receive nine graduation tickets. In addition, during the month of May, I’ll draw two senior names and those seniors will win an additional graduation ticket. I ask you again for prayers for our seniors, the Class of 2017, during their last weeks as students of Bishop Montgomery. We pray that they fully enjoy every graduation event, that they each make good decisions, and that they remain safe. During the senior assembly, the administrators met with the class and emphasized the importance of safety as well as following parental and school rules and directives. I want to remind you that Bishop Montgomery does not support, sponsor or supervise any gatherings, trips, or parties that are not officially listed in the school calendar. It is important for your protection to note that any parties you host for a group of students at your home encumber you with the liability for the safety of those students at the party and for their safety after they leave your home. There are so many choices for our seniors during these event and we want to do everything we can to support their good decisions and their well-being. Life is fragile (we are so aware of this as adults) but we know that our students don’t always remember this in the moment because they are young and feel invincible. They need our support and our reminders! Finally, thank you, parents, for your support and for your children. You, the students, the faculty, and the staff—as I tell you so often—are a daily source of thanksgiving in my life. As we approach the end of the school year, I offer this prayer for you—one that I pray for you at the end of every school year with the hope that you will come to understand and experience the depth of God’s unconditional love for each of you. I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, living within you as you trust in Him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love; and may you be able to feel and understand….how long, how wide, how deep and how high His love really is; and to experience this love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully know or understand it. And so at last you will be filled up with God Himself.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 25 at 10:00am in the gym. This ceremony is by invitation only. Students and parents will receive invitations in May. Students taking AP exams during May – please note that the College Board’s policy regarding cell phones and other electronic communication devices. These items should not be brought into the testing location at all. All cell phones and other items must be turned off and stored in a locker or backpack during testing hours. Questions? IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE TUITION OFFICE REMINDER TO ALL SENIOR PARENTS FINAL PAYMENT The final tuition payment for Seniors is due Monday, May 1, 2017. PAST DUE ACCOUNTS Past due accounts must be paid with a credit card, money order, or cash. No personal checks will be accepted at this late date for past due accounts. FINAL EXAMS All accounts must be paid - in full – by Monday, May 8 for student to be eligible to sit for final exams. DIPLOMAS A student’s diploma will be held until his or her account is paid in full. Detentions take precedence over athletic practices. Arrangements can be made for missing detention due to illnesses, medical appointments, athletic games/meets, and tutoring. Remember that disregard for an assigned detention is cause for a referral and may result in probation (Parent-Student Handbook, page 15) Seniors must serve outstanding detentions prior to attending any senior events.

TRIPS

Bishop Montgomery does not sponsor, condone, nor accept responsibility for trips, cruises, excursions not sanctioned by the school. There may be a current trip that may be disguised as a Bishop Montgomery â&#x20AC;&#x153;Senior Trip.â&#x20AC;? BMHS has nothing to do with organizing, sponsoring, or chaperoning any Senior trips. Any student distributing fliers that advertise these trips will be reprimanded. (Parent-Student Handbook, pg 22)

GRADUATION PARKING

Please refrain from parking at the Little Company of Mary Parking Lot across the street and the parking lots of the neighboring businesses the day of the graduation. Vehicles parked in these parking lots are subject to towing and the owners of those vehicles may be subjected to fines by the City of Torrance. The community will appreciate your cooperation.

STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP

Thank you for your cooperation with the Student Drop-off and Pick-up procedures. The Traffic Division of the Torrance Police Department and Bishop Montgomery HS appreciate your efforts in keeping our students and our community safe. Please continue to pick-up and drop-off your student at the pick-up and drop-off zone located in the east parking lot adjacent to the school. DROP OFF PROCEDURES Parents driving west on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When making a left turn into the west entrance onto campus may drive on to the campus. 2. There is no left turn into the east parking lot. 3. Please drive onto the campus and continue driving until you have arrived at the designated drop-off point located in the east parking lot. 4. There is no student drop-off in front of the school. Please drop-off students in the designated passenger dropoff points located in the east parking lot only. Parents will enter the East Parking Lot through the northeast entrance by the marquee. 5. Our safety officer are available to direct and control traffic

BE ENGAGED.

Parents driving east on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When driving toward the campus, please do not drive onto campus. Parents are to drive east along Torrance Boulevard and enter the east parking lot when dropping of students in the designated drop-off zone. Students are not to be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd. Please note - U-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a U-turn is at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Torrance Boulevard. Exiting the east parking lot 1. The only legal exit out of the east parking lot is a right turn towards Palos Verdes Boulevard. All drivers exiting the east parking lot must make a right turn only. 2. Please do not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so is dangerous and causes delays for other parents attempting to exit. PICKING-UP & DROPPING-OFF OFF-CAMPUS All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Boulevard is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your student(s) anywhere else, please refrain from doing so our neighboring businesses, apartment complex, or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your student(s) in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of safety for all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pickup and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted, and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus. Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind them to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings.

SAFETY

In the interest of our studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to pay attention while either walking home or waiting for their rides. We have received numerous phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; safety. We have heard reports of students being distracted while listening to their mobile device, texting while walking or waiting, and not paying attention to their surroundings. Please remind all students to be aware of their surroundings and be conscious to what is going on around them. We have also been informed by our school resource officer that as of January 1, 2014, a law went into effect prohibiting underage drivers from using any mobile device while driving. This includes all hands-free and Bluetooth devices. Please remind your children to adhere to all traffic laws when driving.

CELLPHONE USE

As a reminder, using a cellphone or any hand-held device is prohibited by law while driving. It is also important to remind your student of the importance of paying attention to their immediate surroundings when using their cellphone as well as while walking or waiting for pick-up. Students should only use their cellphone when it is safe to do so.

Activities: Mrs. Milana McDermott - Dean of Student Life - ext. 273 The month of May is filled with some important student activities. The first section pertains to underclassmen and the second section is outlined specifically for seniors. Please encourage your student to plan appropriately so they can participate. I hope these make for an enjoyable and memorable end to this school year!

CLUBS APPROVED FOR 2017-2018

Bishop Montgomery’s clubs and organizations help to fulfill the many social interests of our students. Bishop Montgomery has a wide variety of clubs and organizations, with at least one sure to match the interests of each student. A full list of clubs and organizations will be publicized for the students next fall, along with information on activities and meeting times.

PARKING SPACE APPLICATIONS

Applications for parking spaces for the 2017-2018 school year will be available to current juniors beginning Monday, May 8 at the Student Store. Parking spaces for the rest of the student body will be available Monday, May 15. Parking spaces are assigned by the Student Store when both completed application and payment are submitted. Please note that due to the limited number of student parking spaces on campus, parking will only be sold to students with a driver’s license (not a permit) and registration information for the car he or she will drive to school. Students are permitted to purchase one spot. More information will be included in the parking application which is also posted on the BMHS website.

SENIOR PROM

The senior prom will be held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel on Friday, April 28. Seniors are advised to refer to the prom bid contract for details and guidelines on this special event.

SENIOR LUAU

The Senior Luau is a long-standing tradition at Bishop Montgomery High School. This year’s luau will be held in the gym on Friday, May 5 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Lunch is catered by King’s Hawaiian, and seniors will enjoy Polynesian entertainment and a viewing of the senior class slideshow. This exclusive event is complimentary for all seniors who RSVP’d by the deadline of April 6. All registered seniors are expected to attend the entire event. Any senior who needs a special exception must get approval from the deans’ office by Wednesday, May 3.

SENIORS

Specific information regarding senior events, including prom and graduation, was sent home in a detailed letter the middle in March. This information is also posted on Bishop’s website. Please pay special attention to dates and deadlines so that you do not miss out on these important activities. See Mrs. McDermott in the Activities Office if you did not receive a copy of the letter, or if you have any questions.

Athletics: Mr. Eric Wood - Athletic Director - ext. 269, Mr. Ed Hodgkiss - Assistant Athletic Director - ext. 260, Ms. Camille Buckley - Assistant Athletic Director - ext. 262 BOYS’ BASKETBALL WINS STATE TITLE The Bishop Montgomery Boys’ Basketball team completed an incredible season by capturing the State Open Division title with a 74-67 win over Woodcreek High School. The Knights finished the season 31-2 under head coach Doug Mitchell. In addition to winning the state title, the Knights also won the Del Rey League title, the CIF-SS Open Division title, the Southern California Regional title, and three tournament titles during the season (Westchester, Mission Prep, D1Bound). The CIF title was the 7th for the program, and the State Championship Title was its 4th. THOMPSON NAMED 1ST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN Bishop Montgomery senior Ethan Thompson ‘17 earned a First Team All-American by MaxPreps. Thompson is one of only five players named to the first team. Thompson, who is headed to Oregon State in the fall, helped lead the Knights to both the CIF-SS Open and State Open Division titles. He averaged 22.8 points as the Knights finished 31-2 on the season. DOUG MITCHELL & NOELLE QUINN NAMED COACH(S)-OF-THE-YEAR Both the boys’ and girls head basketball coaches Doug Mitchell and Noelle Quinn have been named CIF Coach-of-the-Year respectively. Congratulations to both of them! SUMMER CONDITIONING PROGRAM Bishop Montgomery summer conditioning programs are highly encouraged and recommended, although not mandatory, for students interested in participating in Bishop Montgomery High School Athletic programs. Special arrangements to accommodate limited family vacations can be made with the respective coach. Please see our Bishop Montgomery website for additional information, including sport, dates and times. SPRING SPORTS Come out and support your Knights. KNIGHT MUSIC BOOSTER CLUB The Knight Music Booster Club represents the Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, Music Production, Video Production, and Music Ministry. Their meetings are usually on the same Monday nights as Athletic Booster Club and Mother’s Club at 6:00 pm in Room 318 – additional meetings are scheduled as needed. Please join them to help keep the many projects they organize rolling. MUSIC DEPARTMENT HOURS We are always practicing, planning, and organizing school concerts, local performances, competitions, parades, tours, and many other important things – come on in any day before or after school between 6:30 am - 3:30pm (although we’re often there earlier and later). In the month of May, we look forward to welcoming the mothers of our senior students to the May Crowning Mother’s Mass on Thursday, May 11th. It will be our last school Mass with our seniors and a beautiful way to share in communion with them one last time. April was National Child Abuse Prevention Month - a time to recognize that we all play an important role in protecting our children and young people. In the retreat center, Choices spoke to all grade levels on this topic as well as how to cope or avoid violence against them.

RETREATS

Please continue to pray for all of our students who attended a retreat this year. We pray that they may continue to use their experience to grow and remember God’s love for them. We also pray that all Senior Kairos Retreatants may continue to live their Fourth Day!

SERVICE

Thank you to all students and families who donated to the April Denim Day. As we look to our May Denim Day, your generosity is always appreciated for each cause we are supporting. Thank you for bringing in your $2 or more to help. May God bless you for your generosity of giving prayers and financial support to others in need.

Athletics Booster Club Welcome to the 2017 BMHS Booster Club! The BMHS Booster club is designed to provide support for ALL BMHS athletic programs. Joining the Booster Club is easy and fun! Membership is open to all BMHS families, not just those with student-athletes. Members of the Booster Club volunteer their time at many athletic functions by working in the snack stand, helping with the 50/50 raffle, selling BMHS merchandise and helping to get new members like you! They also provide great support to the Athletic Director, Coaches and Student-Athletes. Whether you are a new Bishop parent or a returning seasoned one, please plan on attending our monthly meetings. Please mark your calendar for our upcoming May 15 at 6:30pm in the BMHS Library. See you there! See you there! The Damien Mendoza Scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete who submit the winning essay of “What It Means to be a Student-Athlete at Bishop Montgomery.” Essays for the 2017 Damien Mednoza Scholarship are due to BMHS Athletic Director Mr. Wood no later than April 28. Winners of the 2017 Kelly Nolan Scholarship Winners will be announced soon! Congratulations to the 2016 Kelly Nolan Scholarship Winners: Bernard Amofa, Football and Briana Martin, Girls’ Volleyball. Bernard and Briana both received $100 for the Fall Sports Fee. BMHS Athletic Boosters has funded amazing items for our school with your support: From 2015 to 2017 Boosters has donated $21,953 to our school athletics. We are definitely making a substantial difference and it is all because of you! Our teams have new uniforms, we have a trainer flat bed cart, a new baseball wind screen, and we have given many scholarships to our amazing athletes. Please attend our next meeting, Monday, May 15 at 7:00pm in the Faculty Center building next to student drop-off parking lot. This is a great way to build fellowship with other BMHS parents, learn about our school and most importantly, get involved in your child’s education. In addition, you have an opportunity to earn PSI hours while meeting new people. There are twelve (12) Mothers’ Club events during the year that offer opportunities to fulfill your hours, either by chairing and event, working at one, or set up & clean up duty.
