JANUARY 2018
Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon - Principal
Dear Parents, Happy New Year! 2018! We’ve begun a new year and a new semester and are halfway through the graduation year of the Class of 2018. I know our prayers are with our seniors and their parents as they continue with the college application process and await acceptance decisions. You many have noticed that the lights outside my office are still lit at night. They will remain lit until January 12th, the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus, which is the end of the Church’s celebration of the Christmas season. I ask that you say a prayer each day of the vigil for all of our generous donors to the Queen of Angels Fund, a fund so close to my heart. Our Christmas lights, a symbol of the many generous gifts to the students of Bishop Montgomery, have become a lovely Christmas tradition. Your generosity, as well as the generosity of our alumni, past parents, and friends is certainly cause for celebration. Each of these donors, each of these gifts, light our community with care and love for we are so thankful.
th
As we begin the new year of 2018 and make our resolutions, it’s good to remember that God has a plan for each of us. I always have to remember that my plan is not always God’s plan and it is my constant challenge to trust in His plan, not mine. I love this prayer because it reminds me that it is after all of the celebration and excitement of Christmas is over that the real work begins—that we are called to be faithful to our mission to reach beyond ourselves and be instruments of His grace. I hope this prayer is meaningful to you
When the song of the angels is still
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and the princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins.
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To bring peace among peoples.
To this we are called.
On behalf of the Bishop Montgomery administration, faculty, staff, and students, I wish you a Happy New Year filled with the many gifts that God’s blessings bring. You are in my prayers,
Rosemary Libbon Principal

WELCOME TO SPRING SEMESTER EXCITING NEWS FROM CURRICULM Bishop Montgomery is currently exploring the feasibility of becoming an International Baccalaureate World School. The IB Diploma Program provides high school students with a comprehensive curriculum promoting strong academic and personal standards, with an emphasis on global awareness. Universities across the country regard IB diploma graduates as well prepared for the rigors of higher education, with the majority awarding college credit to students based on IB examination scores. We believe that this well respected program will provide our students with another avenue for success throughout their college and professional careers. The IB authorization process usually takes between 2-3 years, so stay tuned for updates as they become available. For more information about the International Baccalaureate organization, visit www.ibo.org.

ATTENDANCE
Be sure to call in absences or “late-to-schools” directly to the Attendance Office at (310) 540-2021 ext. 233 or (310) 540-3070 in the mornings. We have 24-hour voice mail for your convenience. Also, a phone call does not automatically make the absence or tardy excused. It merely lets us know that the parent/guardian was aware of the absence or tardy. The nature of the absence or tardy (“excused” or “unexcused”) will be determined by the Deans and the Attendance Office. Please refer to the Parent-Student Handbook for what constitutes an “excused” absence or tardy. Phone calls must be made the morning of the absence or the absence will be noted as “unexcused.”
DETENTIONS
Detentions are to be served by the date indicated on the violation or referral slip. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements for transportation if a detention need be served. Disregard for assigned detentions may result in a referral or probation. Detentions take precedence over sports practices and school activities (Parent-Student Handbook, pg 15).
MESSAGES
The Attendance Office and the Front Office staff do not deliver messages during the day. It is both time consuming and disruptive to classes.

STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP PROCEDURES DROP OFF PROCEDURES Parents driving west on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When making a left turn into the west entrance onto campus may drive on to the campus. 2. There is no left turn into the east parking lot. 3. Please drive onto the campus and continue driving until you have arrived at the designated drop-off point located in the east parking lot.
th
Parents driving east on Torrance Boulevard: 1. When driving toward the campus, please do not drive onto campus. Parents are to drive east along Torrance Boulevard and enter the east parking lot when dropping of students in the designated drop-off zone. Students are not to be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd. Please note - U-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a U-turn is at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Torrance Boulevard. Exiting the east parking lot 1. The only legal exit out of the east parking lot is a right turn towards Palos Verdes Boulevard. All drivers exiting the east parking lot must make a right turn only. 2. Please do not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so is dangerous and causes delays for other parents attempting to exit. PICKING-UP & DROPPING-OFF OFF-CAMPUS All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Boulevard is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your student(s) anywhere else, please refrain from doing so our neighboring businesses, apartment complex, or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your student(s) in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of safety for all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted, and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus. Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind them to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings.

ANATOMAGE TABLE PROJECT
In November, a representative from Anatomage visited campus to speak to our science teachers and administration about the Anatomage Table. The Anatomage Table is the most technologically advanced dissection table for anatomy education. These tables are used in many colleges and medical schools, but very few high schools have one. Having one of these tables at BMHS will give our students an incredible learning tool. The Anatomage Table takes real anatomy and restores it digitally so that students can study and digitally dissect real cadavers without any chemicals, ventilation systems, clean-up, or anything else needed in traditional dissections. The table comes already equipped with multiple life-size human cadavers as well as the cadavers of many types of animals. There are curriculum and labs for classroom use already built in to the tables, or our teachers can create their own lectures and labs. Our students who are interested in becoming doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, chiropractors, veterinarians, pharmacists, radiologists, physical therapists, athletic trainers, or any other career in the medical field will have an incredible educational advantage heading to college. Bishop Montgomery is dedicated to purchasing one Anatomage Table for use in multiple classrooms by multiple teachers (the tables are on wheels and can be moved easily from classroom to classroom). The total cost for one table is approximately $80,000 and Bishop Montgomery has already committed $23,000 toward the purchase of a table. For more information about the Anatomage Table and how you can make a gift to this project, please call the Development Office at 310.540.2021 x246 or visit www.bmhs-la.org/anatomage/ th

REFLECTION Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. How relevant are these words today! Sometimes we want to reply in anger or frustration to the situations occurring around us instead of taking a minute to just pause and reflect. Instead of complaining of what isn’t, do we appreciate what is? Do we think of how we can make change and be the change we want to see in the world. Is our inner light shining bright enough this year to help drive out the darkness. PRAYERS As we begin a new semester, thank you for all your prayers for the many special intentions we have been praying for throughout the semester. Please begin praying for the seniors who will going on Kairos from Wednesday, January 31 through Friday, February 2 and begin writing them letters. Seniors - April Kairos is on so please sign up as soon as possible to secure your spot. Forms are in Campus Ministry located in second building. LITURGY We look forward to our Junior Ring Mass on Tuesday, January 30 at 8:00am. All are welcome to attend. Please park and sign in at the drop-off gate and join us in the gym. 2018/2019 FAMILY FINANCIAL SURVEY Dear Parents/Guardians:
We are asking each family to complete the Family Financial Survey. It is a simple survey comprised of ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ questions and all answers are strictly confidential. The information gathered in the survey will help Bishop Montgomery continue its participation in Title I supplemental educational programs, such as subsidizing the cost of technology infrastructure upgrades. Title I supplemental educational programs are paid for with tax dollars. The U.S. Congress passed the “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001” (NCLB) which took effect on July 1, 2002. Title I, Part A, of NCLB provides supplemental educational services to students in both public and private schools. The purpose of the Act is to provide additional help for children so that they can acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the challenging student performance standards that all children are expected to meet. Please take a few minutes to complete the Family Financial Survey as soon as possible (once per family). We appreciate your participation and support for our continued success.

Bishop Montgomery High School Constituents: The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) is a requirement for K-12 schools and libraries in the United States to use Internet Filters and implement other measures to protect children from harmful online content. CIPA requires K-12 schools and libraries to enforce “a technology protection measure with respect to any of its computers with Internet access”. Bishop Montgomery High School (BMHS) does the following with respect to CIPA compliance: BMHS utilizes a variety of physical appliances and cloud-based software to filter, monitor, and block Internet content on all Internet-capable devices connected to our network. All network users are categorized using directory services. A physical appliance on campus monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic for all devices and computers connected to the BMHS network. A physical appliance on campus filters Internet content for all users connected to the BMHS network. BMHS owned and student-owned Chromebook and Chromebox devices are under Google Applications for Education (GAF E) Administrative management. Through GAFE cloud-based software is installed and enforced on all BMHS managed Chromebooks. This cloud-based software monitors students devices 1) on the BMHS network and 2) during school hours. This cloud-based software provides additional Internet content filtering and device monitoring. All student Internet access is filtered. Types of content filtering include but are not limited to: proxy/anonymizer, gambling, dating, hate/discrimination, weapons, file sharing/p2p/torrent, alcohol/drug, explicit/sexual, instant messaging/chat/social media, streaming services. The BMHS Student Handbook and Student Contract states the following Acceptable Usage for Computers Policy: Bishop Montgomery High School strives to teach students how to use evolving technology as a tool to complement learning and understand its application in their lives. In pursuit of this goal, the school has installed state of the art computer hardware and software in the library and in classrooms and has provided high-speed access to the Internet. Having done so, we want our students to gain all the educational benefits made possible by these extraordinary technological innovations. It is important, however, that students realize that we will not tolerate the abuse or misuse of the expensive computer equipment we have provided for them. We regard such activity as a form of electronic vandalism. Likewise, we want them to realize that while we actively encourage them to access the internet for purposes of legitimate educational research and information gathering, we will not permit them to engage in activity that is frivolous, abusive, profane, sexually oriented or illegal. Students will be held strictly accountable for violating any of the provisions of this contract. COMPUTER USE AND INTERNET ACCESS REGULATIONS: Students may not… 1. Install unauthorized programs or software 2. Remove or copy programs installed by the technology coordinator 3. Recklessly or maliciously interfere with or damage computer/network resources, computer data, files, or other information 4. Use profanity, obscene language, inflammatory speech, harass or threaten individuals or classes of individuals, or make personal attacks on anyone using this resource 5. Engage in any illegal or commercial activity, vandalism, destruction or tampering using this resource 6. Reproduce, display or distribute copyrighted material, software or sound recording without permission 7. Use the computers or Internet without obtaining and displaying their ASB Card which has been registered with the Bishop Montgomery High School Department of Computer and Information Services 8. Create, read or send, personal email 9. Give anyone else’s name, address, or phone number over the Internet 10. Initiate or promulgate chain letters or other types of electronic messages, subvert or obstruct a computer or network by introducing a virus, tap phone lines or other network cables, supply false or misleading information to access computer or network systems 11. Download or post to school computers any material which is illegal, proprietary, indecent, in violation of copyright laws, or damaging to the school, or the students 12. Load, view, distribute, or otherwise use the school facilities for the purpose of obtaining, forwarding, viewing, or saving indecent materials. (Knowingly uploading or downloading child pornography is a federal offense.) 13. Bring unauthorized personal laptops and connecting to the into the BMHS network. The BMHS Student Handbook and Student Contract states the following Electronic Communications Policy: 1. Systems, Devices and Materials a. Parishes, schools and the archdiocese reserve the right to monitor, access, retrieve, read and disclose all content created, sent, received, or stored on parish, school or archdiocesan systems, devices and materials (including connections made and sites visited) to law enforcement officials or others, without prior notice. 4. Guidelines for E-mail correspondence and other electronic communications a. All users of parish, school or archdiocesan communications systems and devices should use care in creating e-mail, text, instant or voice mail messages. Even when a message has been deleted, it may still exist on a backup system, be restored, be printed out, or may have been forwarded to someone else without its creator's knowledge. The contents of email and text messages are the same as other written documentation and cannot be considered private or confidential. b. E-mail and other electronic communications are not necessarily secure. c. As with paper records, proper care should be taken in creating and retaining electronic records for future use, reference and disclosure, as applicable. d. Postings to "All Employees," “All Parents” “All Parishioners” and the like on intranets or the Internet or the
World Wide Web must be approved by the pastor, principal or other person in charge at the parish, school or archdiocesan department before they are sent out. e. Use of personal electronic communications devices and materials during regular business hours should be kept to a minimum and limited mainly to emergencies. 5. Prohibited Practices: Users of parish, school or archdiocesan electronic communication systems, devices or materials and users of personal devices and materials on parish, school or archdiocesan premises, during normal business hours or under circumstances when the parish, school or archdiocese may become implicated in the use, may not: a. Violate any federal, state or local laws, regulations, rules of conduct, codes of ethics, safe environment or any educational rules. b. Post or distribute personal contact information about the user or others without permission or review by a responsible adult person, unless required by the user’s job duties or assigned responsibilities. Personal contact information includes names or screen names; telephone numbers; work, home or school addresses; email addresses and web addresses (URLS) of social networking sites or blogs. c. Post or distribute communications or pictures which a reasonable person, according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, would consider to be defamatory, offensive, harassing, disruptive, derogatory or bullying. This includes, but is not limited to, sexual comments or images, racial or ethnic slurs, or other comments or images that would offend someone on the basis of race, creed, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, age, political beliefs, mental or physical disability, or veteran status. d. Engage in improper fraternizing or socializing between adults and minors. Minors may not agree to meet someone they have met online without their parents’ approval and the presence of a parent at any meeting. e. Engage in pirating or unauthorized distribution (such as “podcasting”) of copyrighted materials, music or film; arrange for the purchase or sale of any drugs, alcohol, or regulated substances and goods; or participate in internet gambling. f. Post chain letters or engage in “spamming” (sending annoying, unnecessary or unsolicited commercial messages); repost a message that was sent privately without permission of the person who sent the message. g. Record any telephone or other conversation without the express permission of the other participants to the conversation except where allowed by law. h. Use electronic communications devices for designing, developing, distributing or storing any works of programming or software unless explicitly required by the duties of the job or assignment; i. Upload, download, view or otherwise transmit copyrighted, trademarked, patented, or indecent material, trade secrets, or other confidential, private, or proprietary information or materials to which the user does not have access rights. Regarding copyrighted materials, certain exceptions are given for educational and liturgical purposes. If in doubt, consult the pastor, principal or other person in charge. j. Damage, alter, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to computers or other systems; e.g. use others’ passwords, trespass on others’ folders, work or files. k. Give unauthorized persons access to parish, school or archdiocesan systems, provide access to confidential information, or otherwise jeopardize the security of the electronic communications systems (e.g. by unauthorized use or disclosure of passwords). l. Transmit confidential, proprietary, or sensitive information unless the transmission falls within the scope of the user’s job duties or assignment by a responsible person. m. Introduce a virus, attempt to breach system security or tamper with a system. n. Alter, without authorization, a startup screen or the desktop, or install applications that will subvert these functions. o. Allow any minor to access the Internet on school communications devices before a responsible adult has checked to ensure that active filtering of prohibited materials is enabled. p. Use electronic communications devices or systems to transmit any radio frequency signal that is not permitted and/or licensed by the Federal Communication Commission (“FCC”) or that would violate FCC rules or policies. The BMHS Student Handbook and Student Contract states the following Cell/Smartphones and Smartwatches Policy: Students must keep cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches in lockers during school hours in the off position from the first bell of the day to the last bell of the day. Students may not use cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches during the school day. Cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches should be kept in the off position. Cell phone/smartphone/smartwatch use is prohibited in all buildings and classrooms during school hours, the first bell of the day to the last bell of the day.

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. As IB learners we strive to be: We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.
We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.
We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.
We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.
We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.
We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.
We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups. We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.
We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives—intellectual, physical, and emotional—to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live. We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.
The IB learner profile represents 10 attributes valued by IB World Schools. We believe these attributes, and others like them, can help individuals and groups become responsible members of local, national and global communities. 3
