FEBRUARY 2018
Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon - Principal
Dear Parents, There are a few dates on the February calendar that I’d like to highlight: •
Monday, February 5th, 7:45 Faculty Meeting, 8:45 am start
•
Wednesday, February 14th, Ash Wednesday, prayer service and ashes in the gym, Valentine’s Day
•
Monday, February 19th, Presidents’ Day, All School Holiday
•
February 23rd, Grading Period Ends
•
Wednesday, February 28th, Undergraduate Awards
During this month of February we observe Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the contemplative season of Lent, a time of reflection and prayer. It seems fitting to me that Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday fall on the same day. Working daily during Lent to become new and whole in Christ, hearing and answering our individual calls to sanctity, giving our talents in the service of others, allowing ourselves to be transformed by the power of the Resurrection, are all acts of love in response to God’s love for us. That is, I think, a particularly special Valentine that we can live every day.
th
In this meditation from Thomas Merton’s A Book of Hours, he reminds us that we are not alone as we strive for sanctity or in our desire to be transformed by God’s grace. We participate in that struggle and in that search for community together. We are never alone. He also reminds us that we are called to both the contemplative and the active life—to both prayer and action—and we do
I pray for you every day knowing that it is very hard work to be a good parent. I pray, too, for each of your children that they continue to grow in age and in God’s grace through an active prayer life and through active work. I hope that you will pray for me too.

Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon - Principal
All Christian life is meant to be at the same time profoundly contemplative and rich in active work. It is true that we are called to create a better world. But we are first of all called to a more immediate and exalted task: that of creating our own lives. In doing this, we act as co-workers with God. We take our place in the great work of mankind, since in effect the creation of our own destiny, in God, is impossible in pure isolation. Each one of us works out his own destiny in inseparable union with all those others with whom God has willed us to live. We share with one another the creative work of living in the world. And it is through our struggle with material reality, with nature, that we help one another create at the same time our own destiny and a new world for our descendants.--Thomas Merton. GUIDANCE
Most of our seniors have now completed their college applications and will turn their attention to the financial aid process. Those who wish to receive financial aid, regardless of the school they ultimately choose to attend, must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, more commonly referred to as the FAFSA. The US Department of Education has updated the FAFSA on the Web website for the 2017-2018 school year at www.fafsa.ed.gov The FAFSA is the application for federal and state student financial aid. FAFSA applications for the 2018-2019 year will be accepted starting January 1, 2018 at www.fafsa.ed.gov. California’s Cal Grant program requires the FAFSA to be filed by March 2, 2018. In addition, to receive Cal Grant award consideration, a student must have a school certified Grade Point Average (GPA) submitted by March 2, 2018 (Bishop Montgomery submits this for you, so you do not have to do anything for the GPA verification). Colleges will have their own scholarship and financial aid filing deadlines, sometimes earlier than March 2. Students should check on-line with each college under consideration for its respective scholarship and financial aid deadline(s). Because of the variation in state and college deadlines, it is highly recommended that you fill out the FAFSA as soon as you can to ensure that you do not miss out on available aide. Questions on completing the FAFSA can be made to the Federal Student Aid Information Center email at http:// studentaid.ed.gov/resources#free-application-for.
th
Each year, our counselors stress the importance of submitting the FAFSA as early as possible. The reason for doing so is to give you as much time as possible to review, compare, and analyze each school’s SAR (Student Aid Report). Having the entire month of April, and possibly part of March, to consider and weigh the financial impact of a college decision is critical. College scholarships generally become more local and talent- or interest-specific during the
Please note that any changes made to your student’s schedule for the spring/second semester must be reported to each school to which your student has applied. If applications were submitted before a class change was made, please be sure to email each school’s admissions office to let them know what change has been made and why. If applications have not been submitted, then the change may be reported within the application. It is very important to let each college’s or university’s admissions office know as soon as possible as it may have a direct impact upon whether or not your student is accepted/waitlisted/denied. RE-REGISTRATION Re-registration day is Wednesday, March 14. Re-registration material will be distributed on Monday, February 26. During the first or second week of March (check the school calendar), the academic counselors will visit religion classes to answer questions regarding his or her four-year plan and what is required for college admission, as well as go over course request and selection. Please review the information provided in the re-registration packet with your student before the guidance counselors’ visit. These visits are a good time to have questions answered. If there are questions you have before these meetings take place, please contact your student’s counselor.
HONORS AND AP STUDENTS
Honors and AP students who fell below a 70% at the semester as stated in the course catalog have been leveled down to the appropriate course. Again, any senior who has already submitted applications should immediately contact each school he or she applied to with the change of schedule as stated in the paragraph above.
AP STUDENTS
AP Exam payments are due Friday, February 16, 2018 – no exceptions. Students who do not submit complete payment for the exam by Friday, February 16 will not be permitted to sit for the exam. All exams are preordered based upon number of payments submitted. There will be no extra exams available.
GRADUATION 2018
Graduation for the Class of 2018 will be held on Friday, May 25 in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only, and each graduating senior will receive nine tickets. These tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May. Questions? Please email Dione Dierks at ddierks@bmhs-la.org.

second semester. Each scholarship opportunity that the school is made aware of in print form is summarized in Family Connection, the daily bulletin, and cataloged in the Guidance Center. Students are encouraged to actively pursue these opportunities, while remaining cognizant of the work involved. Many scholarship applications require as much work, if not more, than a college application. Please encourage your student to pursue appropriate opportunities where he or she will be a competitive applicant.

this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your student(s) anywhere else, please refrain from doing so our neighboring businesses, apartment complex, or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your student(s) in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of safety for all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted, and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus. Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is yellow or red and are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind them to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws and to most of all pay attention to their surroundings.

ANATOMAGE TABLE PROJECT
In November, a representative from Anatomage visited campus to speak to our science teachers and administration about the Anatomage Table. The Anatomage Table is the most technologically advanced dissection table for anatomy education. These tables are used in many colleges and medical schools, but very few high schools have one. Having one of these tables at BMHS will give our students an incredible learning tool. The Anatomage Table takes real anatomy and restores it digitally so that students can study and digitally dissect real cadavers without any chemicals, ventilation systems, clean-up, or anything else needed in traditional dissections. The table comes already equipped with multiple life-size human cadavers as well as the cadavers of many types of animals. There are curriculum and labs for classroom use already built in to the tables, or our teachers can create their own lectures and labs. Our students who are interested in becoming doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, chiropractors, veterinarians, pharmacists, radiologists, physical therapists, athletic trainers, or any other career in the medical field will have an incredible educational advantage heading to college. Bishop Montgomery is dedicated to purchasing one Anatomage Table for use in multiple classrooms by multiple teachers (the tables are on wheels and can be moved easily from classroom to classroom). The total cost for one table is approximately $80,000 and Bishop Montgomery has already committed $23,000 toward the purchase of a table. We have also had several alumni in the medical field make gifts to support this project.

REFLECTION “As Lent is the time for greater love, listen to Jesus’ thirst… ‘Repent and Believe’ Jesus tells us. What are we to repent? Our indifference, our hardness of heart. What are we to believe? Jesus thirsts even now in your heart and in the poor. He knows your weakness. He wants only your love, Wants only the chance to love you.” - Saint Teresa of Calcutta We are a month into the New Year and this is the time when our “resolutions” might be broken or harder to follow. However, on Wednesday, February 14, a day we celebrate love, we also begin our Lenten journey. What better way to begin the Lenten season than beginning with our love of Christ allowing him to truly be with us on our journey. We pray for renewed strength and resolve to continue on our path towards a better year. PRAYERS As a school community we continue to pray for the many intentions our students and their families have, as well as for those impacted by the fires and subsequent flooding that followed with the rains. Thank you for your ongoing prayers for all of our students who have and will be attending retreats. In February, we have Seniors attending Kairos and Juniors on their Emmaus retreat. All Sophomore classes will also be going on their on-campus retreat at the end of February. Thank you for your prayers for them. Seniors, there is still room on the April Kairos retreat. Bishop Montgomery High School Constituents: The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) is a requirement for K-12 schools and libraries in the United States to use Internet Filters and implement other measures to protect children from harmful online content. CIPA requires K-12 schools and libraries to enforce “a technology protection measure with respect to any of its computers with Internet access”. Bishop Montgomery High School (BMHS) does the following with respect to CIPA compliance: BMHS utilizes a variety of physical appliances and cloud-based software to filter, monitor, and block Internet content on all Internet-capable devices connected to our network. All network users are categorized using directory services. A physical appliance on campus monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic for all devices and computers connected to the BMHS network. A physical appliance on campus filters Internet content for all users connected to the BMHS network. BMHS owned and student-owned Chromebook and Chromebox devices are under Google Applications for Education (GAF E) Administrative management. Through GAFE cloud-based software is installed and enforced on all BMHS managed Chromebooks. This cloud-based software monitors students devices 1) on the BMHS network and 2) during school hours. This cloud-based software provides additional Internet content filtering and device monitoring. All student Internet access is filtered. Types of content filtering include but are not limited to: proxy/anonymizer, gambling, dating, hate/discrimination, weapons, file sharing/p2p/torrent, alcohol/drug, explicit/sexual, instant messaging/chat/social media, streaming services. The BMHS Student Handbook and Student Contract states the following Acceptable Usage for Computers Policy: Bishop Montgomery High School strives to teach students how to use evolving technology as a tool to complement learning and understand its application in their lives. In pursuit of this goal, the school has installed state of the art computer hardware and software in the library and in classrooms and has provided high-speed access to the Internet. Having done so, we want our students to gain all the educational benefits made possible by these extraordinary technological innovations. It is important, however, that students realize that we will not tolerate the abuse or misuse of the expensive computer equipment we have provided for them. We regard such activity as a form of electronic vandalism. Likewise, we want them to realize that while we actively encourage them to access the internet for purposes of legitimate educational research and information gathering, we will not permit them to engage in activity that is frivolous, abusive, profane, sexually oriented or illegal. Students will be held strictly accountable for violating any of the provisions of this contract. COMPUTER USE AND INTERNET ACCESS REGULATIONS: Students may not… 1. Install unauthorized programs or software 2. Remove or copy programs installed by the technology coordinator 3. Recklessly or maliciously interfere with or damage computer/network resources, computer data, files, or other information 4. Use profanity, obscene language, inflammatory speech, harass or threaten individuals or classes of individuals, or make personal attacks on anyone using this resource 5. Engage in any illegal or commercial activity, vandalism, destruction or tampering using this resource 6. Reproduce, display or distribute copyrighted material, software or sound recording without permission 7. Use the computers or Internet without obtaining and displaying their ASB Card which has been registered with the Bishop Montgomery High School Department of Computer and Information Services 8. chines, stand-alone or networked computers, intranets, the Internet/World Wide Web and any other communications systems that may be created in the future. b. Electronic communications devices include, but are not limited to, regular and mobile telephones, computers, laptops, electronic notebooks, audio and video equipment, flash drives, memory sticks, iPods, MP3 players, Blackberries, and other wireless equipment. c. Electronic communications materials include, but are not limited to, DVDs, CDs, laser discs, audio and video-tape, audio and visual recordings, films, microfiche, audio and visual broadcasts, computer operating systems, software programs, electronically stored data and text files, computer applications, emails, text messages, instant messages, and all other downloaded, uploaded, retrieved, opened, saved, forwarded, or otherwise accessed or stored content. 2. Electronic Communications Systems, Devices and Materials and Users Covered a. All electronic communications systems, devices and materials whether in a parish, school, or archdiocesan department or office; b. All electronic communications devices and materials taken from parish, school or archdiocesan office for use at home or on the road; c. All personal devices and materials brought from home and used on parish, school or archdiocesan premises during regular business hours; d. All personal devices and materials, regardless of location, that are used in such a manner that the parish, school or archdiocese may be implicated in their use. e. All users of electronic communications systems, devices and materials, including, but not limited to, students, employees, staff, contractors, volunteers, clergy and religious, and their families. 3. Ownership and Control of Communications a. All systems, devices and materials located in a parish, a school or an archdiocesan office, and all work performed on them, are property of the parish, school or archdiocese. These systems, devices and materials are to be used primarily to conduct official parish, school or archdiocesan business, not personal business. b. With permission from the pastor, principal or other person in charge, individuals may use systems, devices and materials, including access to the Internet, for personal business and web exploration outside regular business hours or during breaks. All users are expected to conform to appropriate content management and web surfing guidelines, whether during or outside regular business hours. c. Parish, school and archdiocesan systems, devices and materials are not private and security cannot be guaranteed. Passwords and user IDs are designed to protect confidential information, not to provide users with personal privacy. User account passwords for systems not controlled by a centralized user directory or authentication system must be on record with the pastor, principal or other person in charge at the parish, school or archdiocesan department. d. Minors may only access the Internet from devices with updated and functioning filters for prohibited content. All obscene materials, child pornography or materials that are otherwise harmful to minors or in violation of this electronic communications policy must be blocked. Before allowing minors to access the Internet, a responsible person must ensure that content filters are “ON.” e. Content filters for minors may NOT be disabled or turned “OFF” without obtaining prior permission from the archdiocesan Applied Technology Department or the person with equivalent authority at the parish or school. f. All files downloaded from the Internet, all computer disks received from outside sources, and all content uploaded from portable memory devices must be scanned with updated/current virus detection software. Immediately report any viruses, tampering or other system breaches to the person in charge at the parish, school or archdiocesan department. g. Parishes, schools and the archdiocese reserve the right to monitor, access, retrieve, read and disclose all content created, sent, received, or stored on parish, school or archdiocesan systems, devices and materials (including connections made and sites visited) to law enforcement officials or others, without prior notice. 4. Guidelines for E-mail correspondence and other electronic communications a. All users of parish, school or archdiocesan communications systems and devices should use care in creating e-mail, text, instant or voice mail messages. Even when a message has been deleted, it may still exist on a backup system, be restored, be printed out, or may have been forwarded to someone else without its creator's knowledge. The contents of email and text messages are the same as other written documentation and cannot be considered private or confidential. b. E-mail and other electronic communications are not necessarily secure. c. As with paper records, proper care should be taken in creating and retaining electronic records for future use, reference and disclosure, as applicable. d. Postings to "All Employees," “All Parents” “All Parishioners” and the like on intranets or the Internet or the
World Wide Web must be approved by the pastor, principal or other person in charge at the parish, school or archdiocesan department before they are sent out. e. Use of personal electronic communications devices and materials during regular business hours should be kept to a minimum and limited mainly to emergencies. 5. Prohibited Practices: Users of parish, school or archdiocesan electronic communication systems, devices or materials and users of personal devices and materials on parish, school or archdiocesan premises, during normal business hours or under circumstances when the parish, school or archdiocese may become implicated in the use, may not: a. Violate any federal, state or local laws, regulations, rules of conduct, codes of ethics, safe environment or any educational rules. b. Post or distribute personal contact information about the user or others without permission or review by a responsible adult person, unless required by the user’s job duties or assigned responsibilities. Personal contact information includes names or screen names; telephone numbers; work, home or school addresses; email addresses and web addresses (URLS) of social networking sites or blogs. c. Post or distribute communications or pictures which a reasonable person, according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, would consider to be defamatory, offensive, harassing, disruptive, derogatory or bullying. This includes, but is not limited to, sexual comments or images, racial or ethnic slurs, or other comments or images that would offend someone on the basis of race, creed, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, age, political beliefs, mental or physical disability, or veteran status. d. Engage in improper fraternizing or socializing between adults and minors. Minors may not agree to meet someone they have met online without their parents’ approval and the presence of a parent at any meeting. e. Engage in pirating or unauthorized distribution (such as “podcasting”) of copyrighted materials, music or film; arrange for the purchase or sale of any drugs, alcohol, or regulated substances and goods; or participate in internet gambling. f. Post chain letters or engage in “spamming” (sending annoying, unnecessary or unsolicited commercial messages); repost a message that was sent privately without permission of the person who sent the message. g. Record any telephone or other conversation without the express permission of the other participants to the conversation except where allowed by law. h. Use electronic communications devices for designing, developing, distributing or storing any works of programming or software unless explicitly required by the duties of the job or assignment; i. Upload, download, view or otherwise transmit copyrighted, trademarked, patented, or indecent material, trade secrets, or other confidential, private, or proprietary information or materials to which the user does not have access rights. Regarding copyrighted materials, certain exceptions are given for educational and liturgical purposes. If in doubt, consult the pastor, principal or other person in charge. j. Damage, alter, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to computers or other systems; e.g. use others’ passwords, trespass on others’ folders, work or files. k. Give unauthorized persons access to parish, school or archdiocesan systems, provide access to confidential information, or otherwise jeopardize the security of the electronic communications systems (e.g. by unauthorized use or disclosure of passwords). l. Transmit confidential, proprietary, or sensitive information unless the transmission falls within the scope of the user’s job duties or assignment by a responsible person. m. Introduce a virus, attempt to breach system security or tamper with a system. n. Alter, without authorization, a startup screen or the desktop, or install applications that will subvert these functions. o. Allow any minor to access the Internet on school communications devices before a responsible adult has checked to ensure that active filtering of prohibited materials is enabled. p. Use electronic communications devices or systems to transmit any radio frequency signal that is not permitted and/or licensed by the Federal Communication Commission (“FCC”) or that would violate FCC rules or policies. The BMHS Student Handbook and Student Contract states the following Cell/Smartphones and Smartwatches Policy: Students must keep cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches in lockers during school hours in the off position from the first bell of the day to the last bell of the day. Students may not use cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches during the school day. Cell phones/smartphones/smartwatches should be kept in the off position. Cell phone/smartphone/smartwatch use is prohibited in all buildings and classrooms during school hours, the first bell of the day to the last bell of the day.
