BMHS Athletics Baseball

Baseball in BMHS Athletic Hall of Fame The following baseball athletes, coaches, teams, and supporters are members of the BMHS Athletic Hall of Fame: Name (Year Inducted)

Chuck Bongard ‘67 (2014)

Dan Graham ’67 (2011)

On the baseball field, Chuck was a three-year varsity letterman and was the starting third baseman on the 1967 CIF Championship team that was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in the 2011 inaugural class. During the Knights’ run to the CIF title, Chuck hit an impressive .500 in the playoffs. For his efforts, Chuck was named to the All-City team by the Press-Herald after hitting .378 with six doubles, 18 runs scored and 13 RBI’s on the season. He was named 1967 BMHS Sportsman of the Year.

Graham is one of the most decorated athletes in BMHS history. He competed in football, basketball, baseball and excelled in all three. On the baseball field, he played all four years on the varsity team. In 1967, he was the South Bay Player of the Year and the CIF Player of the Year, and led the Knights to the CIF AA title. Following graduation, he was drafted in the 2nd round by the Boston Red Sox. He played both football and baseball at UCLA.

Bill Bordley ’76 (2011)

A standout in every sport he played, Forrest is perhaps best known for his accomplishments on the baseball field. As a shortstop, he was a 3-time first team All-Camino Real League selection and was named league MVP in 1961. As a senior, Forrest had a batting average of .512, the BMHS single-season record for 43 years before it was broken in 2004. He led the Knights to consecutive league titles in 1960 and 1961.

As a sophomore in 1974, he was named 2nd Team All-League. As a junior, Bordley led the Knights to the CIF title by winning the deciding game against Lynwood 1-0 in Dodger Stadium. That year, he was named Camino Real League Co-Player of the Year, Daily Breeze Player of the Year, and CIF Player of the Year. As a senior, he was named All-Camino Real League and, once again, CIF Player of the Year. He holds virtually every single season pitching record at BMHS, including games started (17), complete games (14), innings pitched (115.2), strikeouts (176) and wins (16) - all in 1975.

Irl Davis ‘66 (2013) He has the distinction of being the first baseball player in school history to earn a varsity letter all four years. Following his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons, he was named All-Camino Real League and was named the league’s MVP as a senior. A great two-way player as both a pitcher and an outfielder, Irl was named 2nd Team All-CIF as a senior after batting .349 and was named BMHS Sportsman of the Year in 1966. He holds two BMHS pitching records that will be difficult to duplicate. In 1964, Irl, only a sophomore, struck out 20 batters in a 9-inning 4-3 win over St. Bernard’s. It still stands as the BMHS single game record for strikeouts. Irl also threw an impressive 4 no-hitters at BMHS, one in 1963, one in 1964, and back-to-back no-hitters in 1965. He helped lead the Knights to consecutive league titles in 1965 and 1966.

Tony Guggiana ’64 (2016) Tony Guggiana ‘64 stood out for his excellence on both the basketball court and the baseball field. He was a 3-year letter winner in basketball. On the baseball field, he was a 3-time all-league selection and was the Knights’ starting third baseman for three seasons. He was named Bishop Montgomery’s 1964 Male Athlete-of-the-Year.

Forrest Hunt ‘61 (2013)

in five years, including three league titles. His BMHS baseball teams won double-digit games each year he was at the helm and he coached 5 All-CIF players and 4 players who were taken in the Major League Baseball draft.

1967 Baseball Team (2011) The 1967 baseball team has the distinction of being the first team in school history to win a CIF title in any sport. Coached by Marv Wood, the Knights defeated Pomona 6-2 in the CIF AA title game held at El Camino College. They finished 21-3 overall and a perfect 15-0 in the Camino Real League. The team is: Dennis Haren ‘69, Bill Brady ‘67, Craig Smith ’68, Mike Ramirez ’68, Skip Jarvis ’68, Bill Murin ’67, Darell Mickelbury ’67, Nelson Straley ’67, Mike Constantino ’68, Dan Graham ’67, Chuck Bongard ’67, Dan Pritchett ’67, Steve Patterson ’68, Rich Perez ’67, Bob Comstock ’67, Jim Garbanati ’67, Chuck Desiderio ’68, Bill Gilles ’68, Art Splawn ’67, Coach Marv Wood.

Coach Ernie Martinez (2016)

1975 Baseball Team (2014)

During his tenure in the dugout (1972-1984), Coach Martinez led the Knights to five league championships, seven CIF playoffs appearances, and the 1975 CIF title. He is the winningest coach in program history. His 1975 team is not only the greatest baseball team, statistically, in school history, but it is one of the finest teams in California state history. CalHiSports named the team the 24th greatest high school baseball team in state history. The 1975 team holds school records for wins in a season (27), highest winning percentage (.900), and fewest runs allowed (60). Coach Martinez led the Knights to a 27-3 record, including a perfect 8-0 mark to capture the Camino Real League title. In the CIF title game, BMHS beat Lynwood 1-0 at Dodger Stadium. Following the season, Coach Martinez was named Daily Breeze Coach of the Year. In all, Coach Martinez coached 2 major leaguers, 1 All-American, 1 Olympian, 10 AllCIF players, 11 players who were drafted, and many players who competed in college.

The 1975 Bishop Montgomery Baseball team is not only the greatest baseball team, statistically, in school history, but it is one of the finest teams in California state history. The 1975 team holds school records for wins in a season (27), highest winning percentage (.900), and fewest runs allowed (60). The Knights, coached by Ernie Martinez, went 27-3 on the season, including a perfect 8-0 record to capture the Camino Real League title. They capped their season by beating Lynwood 1-0 in the CIF Finals at Dodger Stadium on an RBI single by Jim Carmody ’75 who drove in Joe Rowell ‘75. Last year, CalHiSports named the 1975 team as the 24th greatest high school baseball team in state history, truly a remarkable accomplishment. The team included several players who went on to play in college, one who played in the 1984 Olympics and two who reached the major leagues. The team is: Bill Bordley ‘76, Jim Carmody ‘75, Tim Collins ‘75, Kelly Gettman ‘76, John Guggiana ‘75, Tom Hentila ‘77, Doug Leach ‘75, Tim Pettit ‘75, Ray Petty ‘76, Paul Pudewa ‘76, Jim Roderick ‘75, Joe Rowell ‘75, Bob Seus ‘77, Chris Smith ‘75, John Spagnola ‘75, Head Coach: Ernie Martinez, Assistant Coach: Anthony Saldana

Coach Marv Wood (2015) In 1967, he led the baseball team to a perfect 15-0 league record and a 21-3 overall record, which was capped off with the school’s first CIF title in any sport. At one point, his 1967 squad won 19 straight games, which still stands as a school record for consecutive victories. He was named the 1967 State Coach of the Year by CalHiSports. His 1964 team shares the school record for fewest runs allowed in a season with 60. He had an overall league record of 57-19-1
