Boys’ Track & Field in BMHS Athletic Hall of Fame The following track & field athletes, coaches, teams, and supporters are members of the BMHS Athletic Hall of Fame: Name (Year Inducted)
Coach Jim Arnaiz (2016) It was at Bishop Montgomery where Arnaiz’ decorated career began. In the fall of 1962, Coach Arnaiz arrived on campus, where he started coaching multiple sports. From 19621968, he served on the football staff. In 1964, he took over the track program at BMHS and led the Knights to league championships in 1967 and 1968. The 1967 league championship team was undefeated and is the first league championship team in program history. In 27 years as the head football coach at Helix HS, he led Helix to a 212-77-11 record. From 1994-95, he served as the State Athletic Director’s President. He was twice named Los Angeles Times Coach of the Year; San Diego County Citizen of the Year in 1981, 1983, and 1999; member of the San Diego County High School Legends; member of the Imperial Valley Coaches Hall of Fame, the Southern California Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Cal Poly Pomona Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mike Gonzales ‘82 (2013) Mike Gonzales is one of the most decorated male track and field athletes in BMHS history. Competing in such events as the 100m, 200m, 110m high hurdles, 300m hurdles, and the high jump, Mike was an 8-time All-Angelus League selection. He also earned All-CIF accolades in the 110m high hurdles and the 300m hurdles and qualified for the state finals in the 110m HH. While a student at BMHS in 1980, Mike was the US Junior Olympic National Decathlon champion and set the national 15-16 age group decathlon record with 6,505 points.
Patrick Kealey ’68 (2012) Pat Kealey had a decorated athletic career while at BMHS, both on the football field and the track. In track, Kealey was a 2-year letter winner (1967 and 1968) and led the Knights to the 1967 league championship. He was a member of the 1967 4x100 relay team that posted the fastest time in the league and he qualified for the CIF prelims in the 100 yard dash. He was named the 1968 Bishop Montgomery Sportsman of the Year.
