From the Principal: Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon, Principal Dear Parents, I want to begin this letter by congratulating our Christian Service Award Honorees. March is the month when most colleges and universities notify applicants whether or not they have been accepted for the fall 2015 semester. We ask that you keep our seniors in your prayers as they await their decisions. They are certainly a competitive group and we are confident that many will be admitted to their first-choice schools. Please be aware that most colleges and universities require students to submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) form by May 1 for the school they will attend. Waiting until May 1 is often a prudent decision, as you will likely have an opportunity to attend an admitted students reception and more fully analyze offers of financial aid. Advanced Placement exams were recently ordered. The exams will take place Tuesday, May 5 through Friday, May 15. All morning tests will begin at 8:00am and all afternoon tests at 12:00pm. For the specific dates for each exam, please refer to the May calendar. As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Sincerely, Casey Dunn Guidance/Studies Coordinator

Uniforms. Please review pages 31-34 of the Parent-Student Handbook with your child to insure that there is a clear understanding of the uniform policy. Students may leave the house looking one way, but appear differently when they come on campus. There is no change in any policy. Students are constantly reminded: · to properly hem the bottoms of the pants so that they are not bunched up on top of the shoes. If a parent is worried that the pants will be too short as their son/daughter grows, a temporary stitched hem can still be put in and let down as the child grows. · that pants need to be worn at the natural waist, not drooping at the hips or lower. Some of the young men have pants drooping so low that their underwear is exposed. Many students are wearing pants that are 4” - 6” bigger in the waist than they should be. The waist needs to be taken in if the pants are large. · that both the polo shirts and oxford shirts should be tucked in all the way. Many students leave their shirts untucked and fold them under so that they only “appear” tucked in. · that the ONLY jackets allowed are BMHS jackets only. The ONLY acceptable sweatshirts are the official BMHS sweatshirts. · that boys’ shorts should be clearly above the knee. If not, they should be shortened to an appropriate length. Girls’ shorts should be lower than mid-thigh. · page 16 of the handbook clearly states that the flagrant disregard for the dress code is grounds for a referral or more severe repercussions. The uniform policy will be strictly enforced by faculty and administrators. · that a student will be detained in the Attendance Office if the dress code infraction cannot be corrected. The Attendance Office will make an attempt to contact the parent so that the uniform item that is missing will be brought to the student before the student is allowed to return to class Parent-Student Handbook, page 12) HAIRSTYLES. As we approach spring break, please remember that exaggerated hairstyles and colors are not permitted. Furthermore, boys must have their hair cut above the eyebrows, (mid)ears, and collar. This includes sideburns. Students who do not comply with this requirement will not be allowed to attend classes. Earrings are not allowed for men and only 1 pair of earrings is allowed for ladies. No earrings should be worn on the upper/middle earlobe. (Parent-Student Handbook, page. 32) DETENTIONS. With a small number of days left in the school year, there are even less detention days. Detentions take precedence over athletic practices. Arrangements can be made for missing detention due to illnesses, medical appointments, athletic games/meets, and tutoring. Remember that disregard for an assigned detention is cause for a referral and may result in probation (Parent-Student Handbook, page 14). Remember, life is much easier when there is no detention to serve in the first place! Prom Time. Prom is just around the corner. As per the Parent-Student Handbook pg. 21, “The school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities pre- or post- Bishop Montgomery dances... The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.” Prom Dance: Remember that your student must fill out the Prom Bid when bringing a non-BMHS student to the dance. The Guest Pass must be signed by the Discipline Office & turned in to the Bookstore by the deadline. The bid must also include a signature from the dean of the student’s school along with an embossed stamp of the school seal. The Deans reserve the right to refuse any non-BMHS student from attending the Prom. All students and their guests are required to bring and show a picture ID card from their school. YOU are responsible for the behavior of your student’s guest.

PARENTS: Important information that you must know and act upon. BURNBOOK app – Delete your student’s app IMMEDIATELY! By Larry Altman, Daily Breeze POSTED: 03/19/15, 8:14 PM PDT |
Torrance school officials want the creator of the popular but controversial app BurnBook to remove its campuses from their site, saying anonymous posts are responsible for threats that endangered students and resulted in “cyberbullying.” The request — along with a plea to parents to encourage their children to delete the app from their cellphones — comes a week after two Lawndale teenagers allegedly made anonymous threats to commit shootings at North High School in Torrance and two Lawndale schools. On Wednesday, Torrance police and district officials investigated whether students posted nude or inappropriate photos of another student or faculty member on the site. “Students are using this app and other social media to engage in cyberbullying,” West High Principal Pam Metz wrote in an email to parents. “Many students believe, incorrectly, that they can anonymously bully, harass, threaten and hurt other students and staff. They are wrong; IP addresses can be traced, and students will be held accountable.” The Torrance Unified School District sent a letter to BurnBook founder Jonathan Lucas on Wednesday, saying his site recently spread threats against its schools twice, including one incident that “resulted in the suspension of students.” “It is also our understanding that you have the ability to use so-called ‘geo-fencing’ or some other mechanism to block access to your applications at schools,” Nisha Bhakta Dugal, senior director of secondary schools wrote in the letter. “Given this information, and the district’s concern for the safety and well-being of our students, we respectfully request that BurnBook remove all district schools from its applications.” In a telephone interview with the Daily Breeze, the 23-year-old New York City resident cited his First Amendment rights and said he would not remove Torrance schools from his app. Lucas said he would cooperate with school district officials and police detectives anywhere in the country to investigate abuses, including threats or inappropriate postings. “The app isn’t the problem,” Lucas said. “It’s the people who abuse it. The truth is the app isn’t posting anything.” Lucas, who said he dropped out of school to develop the app, said he wanted it to be a place for users to have the freedom to post anonymous thoughts about their lives, including stress, divorce, success, sexuality, sports, relationships, vacations and college. He made the app available in September but took it down for three months when it was overrun with nude photos. The free BurnBook app now has about 400,000 users. Despite its name — taken from a notebook made famous in the movie “Mean Girls” as a place to write negative comments about other students — Lucas said his app has nothing more than a “catchy title.” He originally called it Blushhh.
Users enter “communities” that appear to mostly be related to schools. All South Bay high schools, public and private, appear to be represented. Users’ comments range from noting which fellow classmates have the best bodies to naming their favorite teachers to discussing homework and relationships. “How do you know if someone is your true friend and not some fake friend?” one poster asked in the Torrance High School room. Some comments are mean or vulgar. A poster in the Bishop Montgomery High School community on Thursday identified a student by name, saying his “hair and forehead is greasier than a bacon rack.” Another said he wanted to engage in sex with an identified teacher, expressing his desire in more graphic terms. A check of several South Bay high school communities revealed anti-gay, sexist and racial comments, along with negative comments about classmates’ physical traits. A commenter in the Redondo Union High School community referred to an Asian student as a “hoe.” A poster on the South High School community identified a girl who “slept with like six guys.” “If you make anything that has 400,000-plus users, just statistically someone is going to abuse it,” Lucas said. “I’m upset that people choose to abuse it. My vision is being realized. The overwhelming people are responsible posters.” Lucas fixed the app to include “terms of service” agreements for users, including prohibiting nude photographs from the site, and made it available again. The terms say users must be 18 years old, or 17 with a parent’s permission, and prohibits posted content that is “hateful, vengeful, insulting, or inciting to others, namely abusive, harassing, threatening, impersonating, intimidating, bullying, stalking or otherwise objectionable.” The agreement says anyone who behaves like an “idiot” must realize their posts are tied to an IP address that could be given to authorities. Last week, sheriff’s deputies used an IP address to track down and arrest a 16-year-old Leuzinger High School student who allegedly used BurnBook to threaten a shooting at Lawndale High School. The next day, Torrance police arrested a 14-year-old Lawndale girl for making threats on the app against Jane Addams Middle School in Lawndale and North High School in Torrance. Torrance police Sgt. Paul Kranke said detectives looked into the report that a BurnBook user posted nude photos of a classmate but said Thursday that no crime occurred. He described the photos as “selfies” that did not contain nudity or sexuality. “It was inappropriate photographs,” Kranke said. “It was more sharing.” Besides the South Bay officials, Lucas has received complaints from across the country. Similar concerns about his app have surfaced in Oregon, Texas and North Carolina. Lucas, who hopes to one day make money from the app, possibly by selling it to a large company, likened it to a paved road, saying speeders should be punished for violating the rules, but no one should tear up the road. “Why not just remove the entire Internet?” he said. “It’s a very slippery slope. Like, what’s too far? If I remove one school, do you remove every school?”

Judy Tolin bmhsmothersclub@bmhs-la.org 1 Corinthians 9:23-24 (New International Version 1984, ©1984) “I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
