From the Principal: Ms. Rosemary Distaso-Libbon, Principal Dear Parents, The 2014-2015 school year is quickly drawing to a close. The seniors are, of course, counting down the remaining school days! As we come to another ending, I pray for all of you in a particular way—especially the senior parents whose children are on the brink of a brand new and exciting chapter in their lives. I know all of you look at your children and not only see the young men and women they are today but also the echo of the child who once was—as well as the promise of what that young man or woman will become in the future. These moment of ending and new beginning is particularly bittersweet for our senior parents. As I said, I pray for all of you daily. Before we look ahead to the events of May, we have a few congratulations and thanks to offer. First, to all of our students who were honored at the Undergraduate Awards on April 22nd—congratulations! Samantha Nishimura was the featured speaker and she was wonderful. The Students of the Semester for the fall of 2014 were: Class of 2018: Class of 2017: Class of 2016: Class of 2015:

Samuel Hayes and Keisha Barrera Joshua Rhillinger and Haya Rabadi Daniel Robinson and Eunice Gonzalez Joshua Villalta, Kienan Taweil and Vanessa Cicchini

Congratulations as well to our Girls’ Basketball Team, CIF Champions and to our Boys’ Basketball Team, CIF Open Division Champions! I also want to thank Mrs. Kelly Marin for taking her student group to Paris. Mrs. Linda Reano, Mrs. Dulcie Galdamez and Mrs. Joelle Mortazavian also helped to chaperone this trip. Our students had many opportunities to practice their French! And thanks, too, to Mr. Eric Hankey for taking the band to London. They not only toured but performed. Congratulations as well to all of those students who participated in ArtsFest Week and to Mr. John Hong and the members of the Fine Arts Department who organized this wonderful week! Thank you to all of you who attended the Craft Brew Night. It was a wonderful event and a great success. Ms. Shannon Williams who organized the event did a brilliant job. I also wanted to remind you that if you have not already signed up for Smart Tuition for next year that you do so. Smart Tuition will be the vehicle through which tuition payments are made beginning in August of the 2015-2016 school year. Bishop Montgomery was a very busy place over spring break. The old lights in classrooms were replaced with new fixtures and we are beginning work on the classroom ceilings. The first building was wired extensively (the second building is already done and the third will be done in the summer) in anticipation of our Chromebook Program which begins in August of 2015 with our incoming freshmen. We have also purchased new computers for our main lab and for the library to serve the new class in Drafting and the AP Computer Science class.

WHERE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN

Each school morning during the month of May, I will draw two seniors’ names. These seniors will win an extra graduation ticket! Monday, May 4th, is our May Crowning Mass when we celebrate Mary, Jesus’ Mother and our Patroness as well as honor our senior mothers who will be our guests. The Mass will be offered for the intentions of all of our Bishop Montgomery mothers. This is always a particularly special Mass, our last opportunity as the 2014-2015 school community to join in prayer and celebration before our seniors leave us. I hope many of our senior mothers will be present, but whether or not you are able to attend, you will be in our prayers. I ask for your prayers for our seniors, the Class of 2015, during their last weeks as students of Bishop Montgomery. We pray that they fully enjoy every graduation event, that they each make good decisions and remain safe. During the senior assembly, the administrators met with the class and emphasized the importance of safety as well as of following parental and school rules and directives. Please be aware that Bishop Montgomery does not support, sponsor, or supervise any gatherings, trips, or parties that are not listed in the school calendar. It is important for your protection to note that any parties you may choose to host for a group of students at your home encumber you with the liability for the safety of those students and for their safety after they leave your home. There are so many choices for our seniors during these events and we want to do everything we can to support their good decisions and their well-being. Life is fragile and we know that our students don’t always remember that because they are young and feel invincible. Finally, thank you, parents, for your support and for your children. You, the students, the faculty, and the staff are a daily case of thanksgiving in my life. As we approach the end of the this school year, I offer this prayer for you—one that I offer for you at the end of each school year with the hope that you will come to understand and experience the depth of God’s unconditional love for you. I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts, Living within you as you trust in Him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love; And may you be able to feel and understand….. How long, how wide, how deep and how high His love really is; And to experience this love for yourselves. Though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully understand it. And so at last you will be filled up with God Himself. Ephesians 3:17-19 Have a wonderful summer! With Gratitude,

Rosemary Libbon Principal

With the school year quickly drawing to a close, we are now preparing for the Senior Awards Ceremony. The event will be held Thursday, May 28th at 10:00am. Student and parent invitations will be distributed and mailed, respectively, during May. For students taking AP exams during May, I want to reiterate the College Board’s policy regarding cell phones and other electronic communication devices. These items should not be brought into the testing location at all. Having the cell phone or other items turned off and stored in a backpack or pocket is not acceptable. These items should either be left at home or secured in the student’s locker. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Casey Dunn Guidance/Studies Coordinator

Discipline: Ms. Betty Behen - Dean of Women - ext. 234

Mr. Lee Flores - Dean of Men - ext. 232

Detentions: Detentions are to be served on or before the date indicated on the violation or referral slip. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements for transportation if a detention is to be served. Disregard for assigned detentions may result in probation and detentions take precedence over sports’ practices and school activities (Parent-Student Handbook, page 14). Seniors must serve outstanding detentions prior to the Senior events. Trips: Bishop Montgomery does not sponsor, condone, nor accept responsibility for trips, cruises, excursions not sanctioned by the school. There may be a current trip that may be disguised as a Bishop Montgomery “Senior Trip.” BMHS has nothing to do with organizing, sponsoring, or chaperoning any Senior trips. Any student distributing fliers that advertise these trips will be reprimanded. (Parent-Student Handbook, pg 21) Graduation Parking: Please refrain from parking at the Little Company of Mary Parking Lot across the street and the parking lots of the neighboring businesses the day of the graduation. Vehicles parked in these parking lots are subject to being towed and the owners of those vehicles may be subjected to fines by the City of Torrance. Your cooperation will be appreciated by the community. Picking-up and Dropping-off Off-Campus: All parents should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Blvd. is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your students anywhere else, please refrain from picking up or dropping off your students at our neighboring businesses or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your students in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of the safety of all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus. Use of Cellphone As a reminder, using the cellphone or any hand-held device is prohibited by law while driving. It is also important to remind your child of the importance of paying attention to their immediate surroundings when using their cellphone while walking or waiting to be picked up. Students should only use their cellphone when it is safe to do so.
