The Latin word Veritas is defined as “truth.” In Roman mythology, Veritas was the goddess of truth, a daughter of Saturn and the mother of Virtue. Veritas is also the name given to the Roman virtue of truthfulness, which was considered one of the many virtues any good Roman should have possessed. “Veritas” is included in many university mottos as well, including Yale University’s Lux et Veritas (Light and Truth). Veritas is also the motto of Harvard University, and the Dominican Order of the Roman Catholic Church. The BMHS motto is “justice, truth, honor” and the case can be made that all pursuits, if they are valid, must first be rooted in truth. We, as a school community, certainly strive to achieve that goal. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Friends of Bishop Montgomery,

A

s I read through the list of donors in this issue’s annual report, I couldn’t help but call to mind a favorite passage of mine from Thomas Merton’s Book of Hours: “It is true that we are called to create a better world. But we are first of all called to a more immediate exalted task: that of creating our own lives. In doing this, we act as co-workers with God. We take our place in the great work of mankind, since, in effect, the creation of our own destiny, in God, is impossible in pure isolation. Each one of us works out his own destiny in inseparable union with all those others with whom God has willed us to live. We share with one another the creative work of living in the world.” What a lovely expression of what it means to live in community—that we create our own lives in concert with God and with all those with whom we are called to live. We are never alone, we are connected by our great work, our mission, of sharing with one

another “the creative work of living in the world.” We bring to each other what we have been given. Certainly, the many gifts listed in the annual report reflect Merton’s thought. The students are not just the recipients of these monetary gifts but of something much, much more. They are also the recipients of the love extended by the giver, becoming a part of the legacy of love. Acceptance of the gift is a

I can’t help but say many prayers of thanks for your gifts, material and spiritual. You make a difference in our students’ lives, in the life of this school community. We bring to each other what we have been given; it is these gifts of love that define us as a Bishop Montgomery community, nourish us, make us strong. They are what make us different.

“We are never alone, we are connected by our great work, our mission, of sharing with one another ‘the creative work of living in the world’.” promise to honor it and the donor by living their life at Bishop Montgomery well. We are not alone. In fact, we only flourish with the nurturing love of those who are members of not only the immediate school community, but also the wider school community who share with us “the creative work of living in the world.”

Thank You.

O

n the campus of Bishop Montgomery, one does not need to look at a calendar to know what time of year it is. When a flurry of young alumni arrive on campus, it is an indication that colleges have started their winter breaks, or another school year is coming to a close. It is a wonderful opportunity for administrators, teachers, and coaches to see their former pupils; it is also an opportunity to gather valuable information from the alumni about how Bishop prepared them for their college courses. Invariably, the answer is that Bishop graduates are prepared for the rigors of college academics; and, they are ahead of many of their peers when it comes to writing and critical thinking skills, study habits, and digital literacy. With a variety of STEAM educational opportunities available to Bishop Montgomery’s students, and more on the horizon, our future alumni can feel comfortable knowing they are ready to take on the technological world.

Science

words, students don’t know what the results of their lab will be until the end when they have collected all their data and evidence, and have had an opportunity to evaluate their findings.” For Walle and her colleagues, the changes in the lab structure have provided the opportunity to align labwork with what the students will experience if they choose a career in science. “Not only is there more of an emphasis on writing and critical thinking,” says Walle, “but if [the students] are going to make any money in a career in science, then they have to come up with their own results.” For the 2016-17 school year, Bishop Montgomery and the science department are preparing to launch a Sports Medicine pathway. This pathway is designed to provide students who are interested in life sciences, and a possible career in sports medicine, the opportunity to focus their science curriculum to this area, culminating in a sports medicine class/internship with BMHS’ athletic trainers during the senior year. In the classroom, students will study concepts related to sports medicine fields including athletic training, kinesiology, nutrition, and physical therapy. They will also be introduced to, and gain hands-on experience with taping, bracing, injury prevention, injury evaluation, emergency procedures, conditioning, and rehabilitative procedures. “Having the opportunity to shadow our own athletic trainers at practices and games will be an invaluable part of this pathway,” explains Walle. “Learning to evaluate injuries in real-world situations and having these hands-on experiences are essential.”

The last few years have seen some exciting changes in the science department at Bishop, and there are still more developments on the horizon. The number of upper-division courses offered has almost doubled in two years, with nine offerings now available to students. Impacted the most has been the biology curriculum. Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) biology classes have been in place for some time; Honors Anatomy & Physiology and a Sports Medicine pathway will launch in the fall (more on that later). “We have seen more students who want to stay in life science classes, and, in the past, With all the exciting developments in the they have been a little underserved when ABOVE: BMHS freshmen conduct an experiment in science department, Walle stresses that stuthey become juniors and seniors,” explains their Honors Biology class. dents who are enrolled in regularly-paced alumna and science department member classes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Lisa Roehl-Walle ‘00. Walle, who teaches Anatomy & Physiology will still have opportunities to matriculate into three sections of Honors Biology, has been instrumental in making sure AP and honors courses. “We don’t track our students in science, or any Bishop’s science students are provided the opportunities they need to other department, for that matter,” explains Walle. “If a student is in a be successful in college and beyond. “Our alumni are pursuing careers in regular science class and does well, then he or she has opportunities to the life sciences - doctors, nurses, and physical therapists,” says Walle. move forward into an honors or AP-level course.” “Now, these students can take four years of life science to help them better prepare for their college and professional lives.” Another important advancement has occurred in the structure of sceince labs. A typical lab used to be a 1-2 day event. Now, about 25-50% of course time is dedicated to lab work and every lab is conducted using some software interface. “We have moved away from ‘cookie-cutter’ labs - knowing how an experiment should end before it even starts - and towards argument-driven inquiry labs,” explains Walle. “In other

Technology

Moving forward has been a continuing theme in the technology department at Bishop Montgomery. Major advancements in the technological infrastructure on campus have enabled students and teachers to bring new ideas, as well as new teaching and learning methods, into the classroom and beyond.

In anticipation of the major technological advancments on campus, the school’s administration formed a technology committee in 2012 to explore options for upgrading network infrastructure and enhancing classroom learning. Under the guidance of teacher John Hong, and Systems Coordinator Tony Echevarria, the committee established a plan, much of which has already been put in place, and included the complete re-wiring of the campus and the implementation of a 1:1 Chromebook program. “The committee continues to search for ways to make technology a focus on campus,” says Hong. “We are lucky to have teachers who embrace new ideas and students who love to learn.” Hong was also quick to praise the work of BMHS parent and alumna Shannon Heinlein-Tabaldo ‘91, who has been a tremendous asset to the committee. Tabaldo is currently the Senior Instructional Designer in the School of Education at Loyola Marymount University and she provides technology professional development for schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. “Shannon has been an invaluable asset in showing us the best options to explore in upgrading our infrastructure, as well as providing our teachers with best practices in applying more technology into their lessons, regardless of the subject.”

Enabler, Social Media Manager, Mobile Technology Expert, User Experience Manager, and many more over the last ten years. Furthermore, computer science and computer engineering are both within the top five highest average starting salaries for undergraduate majors.” Even with all the improvements and additions that have taken place at Bishop, administrators, students, teachers, and coaches continue to look for ways to incorporate new technology, information, and ideas into their school lives. “What is most important about the advancement of technology,” explains Adams, “is that we as a school are making more educational resources available to our students.” In the coming years, Chromebooks will be in the hands of every student and teacher, and varied Learning Management Systems (like Google Classroom) will be used across the board. Additionally, plans are in the works to transform the library into a digital learning commons. This improvement will be possible thanks to a generous gift made by alumni Mike Baaden ‘82 and Diane Dieter-Baaden ‘88 on behalf of All Life Charities and in memory of Diane’s parents, Frank and Kathy Dieter. Frank served as a Deacon at St. Lawrence Martyr Church and Kathy was the bookstore manager at BMHS for over 25 years.

Another exciting step forward for BMHS arrived last year with the hiring of Brian Adams as Technology Curriculum InteBishop’s Robotics Club - the Robogration Specialist. In fact, Bishop is one Knights - is an example of a group on of the first schools in the Archdiocese of campus that is making the most of the Los Angeles to have this position on a resources they have. role as that of facilitator of technology education. His goal is to support student engagement and make teachers’ lives easier. “Technology in the classroom can increase student engagement and understanding of the material across all subjects,” explains Adams. Just as instructors in the science department are preparing their students for possible careers in science with the way labs are being conducted, Adams stresses the use of computer science concepts when working with teachers and students. “By incorporating computer science concepts into curriculum, we can reinforce important skills like critical thinking, creativity, logic, and collaboration,” says Adams. “We are trying to expose and prepare students for the opportunities they will have in the future. An often overlooked aspect of preparing students for the future is the emergence of new occupations that did not exist eight to ten years ago. For example, in 2008, Apple launched their App Store for mobile devices. Before the launch of this Apple service, being an app developer for mobile devices was not a vocational choice. Other positions have emerged as well: Information

For the students involved in the Robotics Club, the engineering experience is invaluable and has real-world applications. Junior Ashley Kim ‘17, one of the team’s engineers, plans to major in engineering in college and loves collaborating with her classmates. “I love seeing how all the programming and building of the robot comes together,” says Kim, “but my favorite part is that we all have to work as a team. I’m not great at the programming aspect of what we do, so I have to rely on my team for help.” The biggest challenge for Sansalone is finding the funding to do what he really wants: provide more opportunities for students to join the RoboKnights. Today, he has space and funding for only one team (11 members) but would love to add a second unit. “There is so much interest in Robotics, but so few spaces, so I have to deny qualified students,” says Sansalone. “To provide more students the opportunity to be in the club, we would need about $4,500 per year.” Robotics is not the only opportunity on campus for students to gain

In the design course, students utilize CAD (Computer-Assisted Design) software in the PC lab to create 2D or 3D models and drawings. Students also learn how to read engineering drawings, and explore geometric dimensioning, technical calculations, engineering graphics, and mechanical design. Next year, Bishop will launch a mentorship program with a local construction company, Del Amo Construction (see sidebar below).

Arts Bishop Montgomery’s administration has always strived to satisfy the demand for more opportunities in the arts. Already in place are a variety of courses where students can hone their talents in acting, music, drawing, and sculpting. In recent years, Bishop has added courses in the arts where students can combine their artistic skills with their love of technology. Graphic design classes, for example, introduce students to industry-standard programs including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

Math The math department at Bishop not only offers an extensive selection of math classes for all grade levels ranging from Pre-Algebra to Advanced Placement, but the faculty take great pride in preparing students to be successful after graduation. Honors and AP courses include Honors Algebra I, Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra II, Honors Introduction to Calculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, and AP Computer Science. Both the AP Statistics and AP Computer Science courses are new this year and provide students a full menu of classes from which to choose. “We are proud of the fact that we offer a full-range of courses,” says department member Anett Mitchell. “The statistics and computer science courses really round out what a high school can offer and they help satistfy a growing need for higher level math courses the students want.”

With a growing number of students focusing on science and engineering majors in college, it is important that Bishop’s math department provide the tools students need to succeed. BMHS to Launch Engineering Partnership With ACE, students will learn about careers in the integrated construction industry. In Fall 2016, Bishop will launch the ACE (Architecture- Construction-Engineering) mentorship program with Torrance-based Del Amo Construction. This extra-curricular engineering program will be open to all students. ACE’s mission is to engage students and encourage their pursuit of careers in the integrated construction industry through mentoring. Students will be assigned to teams, which will be overseen by industry mentors. The teams are configured to emulate an actual design team, with students guided through a mock design project by their architect, engineer, and construction management mentors. The mentors will guide the students as they work towards a final project, introducing them to careers, industry vocabulary, and various roles companies play in the construction industry. ACE will run for the duration of the school year and student teams will meet for approximately 15 sessions, each about two hours after school. In addition to these sessions, the students will also participate in all-team activities including “College Night” and field trips to construction sites.

Alumnus Mark Lincir ‘87 Shares His Knowledge of the Recruiting Process with the World

B

ishop Montgomery alumnus and All-CIF midfielder Mark Lincir ‘87 has travelled extensively, sharing his knowledge of the U.S. university system with student-athletes from all over the world. The one thing he always stresses is that if they want to play sports at the college level, it’s going to take a lot of work. “I couldn’t believe how grueling and competitive practices were when I got to college,” says Lincir who was also an All-Conference defender at Cal State Dominguez Hills in the late 80’s. “And at that level, it’s you that has to want it more than anyone else. It can’t be your parents, coaches, or friends. Every day you have to prove yourself in practice in order to keep your spot in the lineup and on the team... most young athletes aren’t ready for the significant jump up in competition from high school to the college level.”

offer little in the way of a scholarship and maybe sees [them] getting on the field junior or senior season.” What continues to drive Lincir and Campasano in this business is the amount of misinformation they feel is spread around the sidelines, courts, and diamonds every weekend by out-of-touch parents. “Parents might hear a story about a player going to UCLA on a full-ride, but they need to remember that most of that they hear is complete garbage. Just because [an athlete] gets a ‘bounce-back’ email from a school doesn’t mean they are interested. So many families change their lives to chase this dream of playing D1 college sports, but after watching two minutes of video, we can see that the athlete doesn’t have the tools or athletic ability to play at the D1 level. But, there is nothing wrong with that …most kids aren’t D1 and there are thousands of schools at other levels who would love to hear from them, “ says the former two-time Academic All-American. “We have been working with BMHS’ own quarterback Brendan Marafino ‘16 and, after only one week of working with him, we had half a dozen schools very interested to have him come play for them.”

A few years ago, Lincir joined Chris Campasano of Ethos Recruiting to help high school athletes procure college scholarships and also navigate the college pathway here in the States. Eddie Kaulukukui ‘97: A Rising Star

W

hile he was a student at Bishop Montgomery, Eddie Kaulukukui ‘97 excelled in many different areas of school life. He was an excellent student who went on to earn a degree in electrical engineering from Loyola Marymount University. He was a leader, serving as ASB President his senior year; and he was an outstanding athlete, playing valuable minutes on the basketball team and earning 1st Team All-CIF honors in volleyball. Although he often found himself in the “spotlight” in high school, he had little idea that one day he would find himself in a similar spotlight in his professional life. As an actor who has worked on stage, as well as in television and movies, this humble alumnus is ready to be a star and is passionate about giving back to his community. Through it all, he has never forgotten the lessons he learned and the friends he made at Bishop Montgomery High School. Thinking about his inspiration for the stage, Kaulukukui recalls going to the theater with his dad as a youngster. “As I sat there watching the performance,” he recalls, “a prayer came to mind and I asked God to give me a life of adventure.” While in college, he met an actress who encouraged him to do some modeling; so he did. His first professional acting job was no small gig. In 2005, he auditioned for, and was hired by, Disney to play the role of Aladdin in the Disneyland production of the play by the same name. He was immediately thrown into the 2,000-seat stage at the theme park, considered the top level. “It was baptism by fire,” explains Kaulukukui, who played Aladdin for over five years. “For some reason, they had faith in me.” As anyone who knows Kaulukukui can attest, it was not difficult to see why the powers-that-be at Disneyland were ready to put this talented, multi-faceted entertainer on their main stage in one of the park’s most popular shows. After all, Kaulukukui has achieved everything he has through hard work and a desire to be great at whatever it is he is doing. “Eddie was not only a fantastic student (he graduated with a GPA of over 4.0) at Bishop, but he was passionate about making the high school experience rewarding for every student at the school” explains Dione Dierks, BMHS’ current Director of Outreach who served as Activities Director while Kaulukukui was Bishop’s student body president. “Eddie was a great leader because he had a great work ethic, carried himself with class and dignity, and did everything with integrity.” Kaulukukui admits that some of his work ethic was derived from his days on the court playing varsity basketball for Coach Doug Mitchell. This September, Kaulukukui was one of many former players who returned to campus to help celebrate Mitchell’s induction into the BMHS Athletic Hall of Fame. “Even today, if I am playing pick-up basketball with friends, I find

myself sprinting back on defense for fear that Coach Mitchell might be watching,” joked Kaulukukui. “I know he is not there, but Coach Mitchell instilled in us that there is absolutely no substitute for hard work. Plus, I don’t want to get yelled at!” In addition to working for Disney, Kaulukukui has appeared on several television shows, including Hawaii 5-O, and, at one time, had five national commercials running simultaneously, including major advertisement campaigns for Verizon and Infiniti. He has also appeared in several films. He played Kane in the 2010 film White Wall; and, he played the role of Joseph in 2015’s Full of Grace, the story of Mary of Nazareth’s last earthly days. This year, Kaulukukui will appear as the Apostle John in 40 Nights, a film that examines the pre-ministry life of Jesus. He also is a talented singer and musician (his Twitter handle is @eddiekmusic) who has produced several songs. You can watch his video, Just Move, on YouTube and iTunes. Producing, acting, modeling, and music are not the only things that keep the fire burning within Kaulukukui. He is always finding ways to use his fame to make a difference in people’s lives. It is something he learned early on during his high school years. While at BMHS, one of Eddie classmates, Val Manalansan ‘97, was diagnosed with leukemia. The student body rallied around the talented golfer and much-loved young man who passed away in 1998. A Redondo Beach bone marrow drive for Val became much more than a BMHS event -- it was covered by local news stations and attracted celebrities from the entertainment and sports worlds. “Val was a special classmate and a special person,” says Kaulukukui. “The whole thing had a tremendous impact on me. It showed me that it is important for kids to know that they can make a difference.” Recently, Kaulukukui has also been active with Saving Innocence and International Justice Mission, human rights organizations that rescue victims of violence, sexual exploitation, and sex trafficking. “The entertainment industry, I feel, has a calling to it,” he says. “I feel purpose in it and I want to use my voice to make a difference in people’s lives. Maybe in some small way I can make a huge difference.” Today, Kaulukukui is focusing on his writing career, working for Disney -- most notably as an entertainer for Disney Vacation Club Hotel events, and using his career to be a catalyst for positive change in people’s lives. He loves the story telling process and has written a screenplay that, he humbly says, people in the film industry believe has potential. “Much of my passion is in story telling,” says Kaulukukui. With a work ethic as strong as they come, and life events from which he can draw inspiration, there is no doubt that Kaulukukui’s spotlight is ready to shine.

BMHS freshman Kennedy Dierks ‘19 is the founder of the South Bay chapter of No Crayons Left Behind (www.nocrayonleftbehind.org), an organization dedicated to putting crayons in the hands of underprivileged children. Through partnerships with local restaurants, she collects crayons left after children’s meals and distributes them to schools, shelters, and orphanages. In the last year, crayons have been donated to orphanages in Haiti and Tijuana, and inner-city Los Angeles elementary schools and children’s programs. With hundreds of crayons collected each week, Dierks is looking for charities and non-profit organizations that could use these crayons to give to children. Junior Attends Leadership Mission Martinez, Masters, & Pudewa Set To Retire

T

he end of the 2015-16 school year will bring with it the retirement of three longtime staff members. Rose Martinez (left), Dee Masters (center), and Barbara Pudewa (right) will retire after serving BMHS for a combined 110 years. Truly amazing!

W

hen Bishop junior Chelsea Hylton ‘17 was approached by her guidance counselor, Ms. Angelica Diaz-Perez, to apply for the Anti-Defamation League’s Grosfeld Family National Youth Leadership Mission in Washington, D.C., she was a little hesitant at first. After all, it was open to high school juniors all over the country, making the chances of being chosen very slim. With application deadlines fast approaching, Hylton completed her requirements, which included submitting an essay discussing the lessons we can learn from the Holocaust, and soon heard that she was one of 28 students from Los Angeles selected for the interview portion of the process. Soon after the interview, she learned that she was one of ten L.A. students selected to attend the weeklong mission in November. It was an experience she will never forget. As part of the mission, 140 high school juniors participated in group sessions to discuss issues regarding anti-Semitism, bigotry and hate, and they took a tour of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Hylton, who, like all of the attendees, was chosen based on her leadership potential, interest in discussing issues of diversity, and her ability to impart the lessons of the Mission to others. “My favorite part of the trip was meeting and working with students from all over the country,” she says. “We talked about ways to help young people teach others to live in a world without hate, bullyinig, and stereotypes, using the lessons of the Holocaust as a foundation of our discussions.” Upon her return, Hylton and the other students from the Los Angeles delegation have stayed involved in the program. “It is great to stay involved by talking to other students and enlightening them about all of the injustices that are out there,” she says. In her application essay, Hylton wrote that “we need to be able to live in a world where we stand up for our own beliefs. Part of the reason we have bullying, bigotry, and anti-semitism in our world is because people sit back and don’t stand up. Voicing your opinion can be one of the strongest things someone can do.” There is no doubt Hylton’s voice has already been heard.

As the registrar, Martinez has become familiar with every student who has walked the halls during her 34 years. The bulk of her duties consist of keeping the records for all students, sending official transcripts to colleges, preparing and report cards, and assisting the counselors. She has dedicated herself to Bishop for many years, and, certainly, “Rose is the Registrar extraordinaire—the one who always has the answers but even better, who can always find a solution,” says Principal Rosemary Libbon. “She is the heart of the guidance department—and I know that they each will miss her dearly, as we all will, not only for her expertise but for her wisdom, her integrity, her intelligence, her creativity, her kindness, her gentleness, and, for her wonderful sense of humor.” If BMHS had a teacher who is a “jack of all trades,” there is no doubt it would be Masters. In 34 years, he has taught such classes as AP Literature, AP Language, British Literature, Shakespeare, Theatre Arts, AP History, Economics, Psychology, Algebra I and II, and Speech & Debate. “He has made a difference in many, many students’ lives as a teacher and as director of the drama program, which I asked him to develop from scratch in 1997,” says Libbon. “His gift for being inclusive, for creating a diverse student drama community, and for encouraging every student to grow in confidence was magic for me to watch. We are so grateful to him for what he has given Bishop Montgomery.” What will we do without Barbara, our most loyal and devoted Knight? Barbara's service as Business Manager is legendary. Not only does everyone remember Barbara but she remembers everyone. She is the school’s historian. Barbara is amazing in so many ways. “In the nineteen years that I have been at BMHS, Barbara has been my partner--the guardian of the money, the keeper of the finances, my partner in every building project--her talent with managing money a source of financial stability for the school,” says Libbon. “She is my friend, my business partner, my trusted colleague, an integral part of BMHS and its mission. She is at once tough and stubborn and immensely caring and generous, a person of great substance and common sense. She has more than earned her retirement, but the loss of her significant talent and the strength of her daily presence will be notable. We have Barbara to thank for the financial foundation she established and maintained long before I came to Bishop Montgomery, for our ability to build without incurring debt, and for leaving us with a promising financial future. Her loss will be profound but what she has given Bishop Montgomery is even more profoundly immeasurable. We love you, Barbara.”
