The autumn winter collections are dominated by intense shades, deep tones with a strong personality. Manga, the graphic storytelling style that means ‘pictures run riot’ in Japanese, traces its roots back to the 19th century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), whose miscellaneous drawings of people, animals and nature were published as ‘Hokusai Manga’. Since then, the medium has evolved to become a form of immersive storytelling with unique characters, embracing universal issues. Today, the genre has influenced contemporary film and games creating a multi-billion global industry, from comics to cartoons. The British Museum has mounted the largest exhibition dedicated to Manga ever held outside Japan. Manga has the visual power to thrill and has become a global phenomenon, a symbol of cutting-edge expression and global visual culture.

El manga, un estilo de narración gráfica cuya traducción en japonés es “dibujos caprichosos”, se remonta al siglo XIX, al artista japonés Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), cuyos dibujos variados de personas, animales y naturaleza se publicaron como ‘Hokusai Manga’. Desde entonces, el medio ha evolucionado para convertirse en una forma de narración inmersiva con personajes únicos y que abarca temas universales. Hoy, el género ha influido en el cine y en los juegos contemporáneos, creando una industria global multimillonaria, desde los cómics hasta los dibujos animados. El British Museum ha realizado la exposición más grande dedicada al manga jamás realizada fuera de Japón. Throughout the show we are transported into the immersive world of manga. Visitors will enter a rendering of the oldest manga bookshop in Tokyo. Audio and video installations help bring the world of manga and its characters to life. They include clips from Anime, which can trace its origins to 1917, growing in popularity from the 1960s to the global creative industry it is today.

La exposición transporta a los visitantes hacia el mundo inmersivo del manga y les permite ingresar en una representación de la librería de manga más antigua de Tokio. Las instalaciones de audio y video ayudan a dar vida al mundo del manga y a sus personajes. La muestra incluye también clips de anime, rastreando sus orígenes hasta 1917 y cuya popularidad ha ido creciendo desde la década de 1960 hasta la industria creativa global actual.

18 August 1969. An immense meadow, soon transformed by the incessant downpours into an expanse of mud and sludge, near Bethel, in Ulster county, New York state became the destination for a huge crowd of young people who came to enjoy three days of peace, love and music. Unfazed by the lack of facilities and total absence of services – toilets, for example - the flower children were about to write an unforgettable chapter in the history of rock. The event, held on the land of a farmer whose son had persuaded him to open the property to “a few country music fans”, was organised by the young Michael Lang. So, in front of a sea of peace-loving hippies, for the most part tripping on LSD or high on pot, some of the world’s most acclaimed acts took the stage – performers like Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, the Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Who. The festival was closed much later than scheduled before a scattering of stoned spectators with Jimi Hendrix giving a sublime, feedback-driven version of America’s national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. The Beatles were unforgivably absent - John Lennon had refused to appear if his lover Yoko Ono and her Plastic Ono Band couldn’t take the stage with him. Nowadays the Woodstock Festival remains in the collective imagination as the greatest celebration of the youthful spirit at a time when it was believed the world really could be changed. This great event can be experienced once again through the world’s largest kaleidoscope at Mount Tremper in the Catskill mountains, with images of the most amazing gathering in the story of American music, and the youth counter-culture.

En un inmenso prado que, por la lluvia incesante se convirtió en poco tiempo, en una extensión de barro y lodo, ubicado en el condado de Ulster, estado de Nueva York, se reunió una multitud de jóvenes para transcurrir juntos tres días de paz, amor y música. Despreocupados por la falta de servicios y de cualquier tipo de asistencia, empezando por la sanitaria, los hippies marcaron una fecha inolvidable en la historia del rock. El joven organizador del evento, que tuvo lugar en el campo de un agricultor, convencido por su hijo a ceder su terreno a “algunos aficionados de la música country…”, fue Michael Lang. Y allí fue, donde delante de una inmensa cantidad de jóvenes pacifistas, la mayoría fl ipados por el consumo de LSD y de marihuana, se exhibieron en el palco músicos que posteriormente serían famosos en todo el mundo, como Janis Joplin y Joe Cocker, junto a grupos como los Grateful Dead y Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, la banda Creedence Clearwater Revival y Who. Quien cerró la kermés, después de horas de retraso y delante de un público somnoliento y desentonado, fue Jimi Hendrix, quien tocó y distorsionó el himno nacional Star Spangled Banner, convirtiéndolo en algo sublime. Ausentes sin justificación fueron los Beatles, pues John Lennon se negó a participar porque no permitieron que subiera al escenario su amada Yoko y su Plastic Ono Band. Hoy, el Festival de Woodstock representa en el imaginario colectivo, la máxima celebración del espíritu juvenil de aquella época en la que parecía que se podía pintar al mundo con otro color. Un gran evento para revivirlo en el caleidoscopio más grande del mundo, en Mount Tremper, en la cadena montañosa Catskills, donde pasan las imágenes de la reunión más sorprendente de la historia de la música estadounidense. Symbolic and permeated with colour, Okuda San Miguel’s murals, street art, sculptures and installations vibrate with an energy that is impossible to ignore. Charged with enigmatic imagery and pigmented geometry, his artworks are expressions of existentialism, the meaning of life and the false freedom of capitalism. Influenced by a love of PopSurrealism, this Santander-born artist seeks to breathe new life into the world. What sparked your interest in mural art and why do you continue to explore with this medium? I am very interested in creating mural art on large buildings in cities, changing its landscape and iconic landmarks. I seek to create new tourist destinations, transforming the perspective and inspiring new feelings in my audience. In my mural work in Toronto I believe that I changed the skyline of the city.

¿Qué despertó tu interés por el arte mural y por qué sigues explorando con este medio? Me interesa mucho crear arte mural en los grandes edificios de las ciudades, cambiando su paisaje y sus monumentos emblemáticos. Busco crear nuevos destinos turísticos, transformar la perspectiva y crear sentimientos nuevos en mi audiencia. Creo que conseguí cambiar el horizonte de la ciudad con mi trabajo mural en Toronto.

What is your process when working on a large scale mural? I love to arrive at my destination and take in its environment and architecture. Often, I need to talk with the architects and adapt my work to the requirements of the building. If the wall is flat, I can follow a different process, painting my work as I would do on a canvas.

¿Qué proceso sigues al trabajar en un mural a gran escala? Me encanta llegar a un sitio y captar el entorno y su arquitectura. Por lo general necesito hablar con los arquitectos y adaptar mi trabajo a las necesidades del edificio. What are your creative rituals before beginning a new project? With every new project, everything has to be ready for me to start. My team sends the organisation all that I need. I take everything into account, such as the height of the building, my chosen colours and its background.

¿Cuáles son tus rituales creativos antes de comenzar un nuevo proyecto? Cuando arranca un proyecto nuevo, todo tiene que estar listo para que yo pueda empezar. Your work is best known for being incredibly vibrant. What role does colour play in your art? I like to use all colours, where the combination is mathematical in my mind and can be seen in 3D. I use multicolours in a body or face, to show that we all are one.

How does geometry complete your work? I have a digital mind, and I want to change form through geometry. I see the geometrics in my mind before I start, mixing organic aesthetics, such as trees and mountains, with digital elements – I love how this contradiction works.

¿Cómo completa tu trabajo la geometría? Tengo una mente digital y quiero cambiar las formas por medio de la geometría. Veo la geometría en mi mente antes de empezar y mezclo la estética orgánica, como los árboles y las montañas, con elementos digitales. Me encanta cómo funciona esta contradicción.

Your work is symbolic, invoking modern, existential and surrealist themes. How do these concepts influence your work? Surrealism has interested me since my academic studies. I have travelled around the world, discovering new artists and cultures in places like Africa, Mexico, Peru and Asia. I love to mix old and new civilisations in my work.

Tu obra es simbólica e invoca temas modernistas, existencialistas y surrealistas. ¿Cómo influyen estos conceptos en tu trabajo? El surrealismo me ha interesado desde mis estudios académicos. He viajado por todo el mundo y he descubierto nuevos artistas y culturas, como en África, México, Perú y Asia. Me encanta mezclar en mis obras, civilizaciones nuevas y viejas.

Your work has been exhibited all over the world. Has one location been significant to you? It is very difficult to choose one, as each destination has been an incredibly emotional experience. I like to believe that the best projects are still to come.

Tell us more about your current projects? As well as large scale murals and sculptures, I am currently working on a collaboration called elrow’art with Paco Osuna and with support of Desigual. I am very happy about this as I have a deep connection with Ibiza and two of my passions will come together: electronic music and art.

With a passion to exhibit his art through every possible medium, Kenny Scharf invades public spaces with murals, sculpture and graffiti, customising urban and domestic objects through an imaginative and creative force. Although his brightly coloured imagery is often viewed as witty and playful, darker themes exist beneath the surface, caricaturing America’s middle-class utopia and dichotomy.

At La Nave Salinas, Kenny Scharf exhibits an impressive installation that will showcase his most recent pictorial work. Commissioned by Lio Malca, the pieces create a world of mischief through humorous expressions which are layered with complex meaning and emotion. Here, the artist invites the audience to enter an otherworldly space that will awaken their senses through a delirious large-scale installation.

What led you to become an artist? I was born into an artistic family. My great grandfather, Baron von Schlossberg, painted at the court of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. My father was also an excellent painter, so it was natural for me to become an artist.

¿Qué te llevó a hacerte artista? Nací en el seno de una familia artística. Mi tatarabuelo, el barón Von Schlossberg, era pintor en la corte del Rey Luis II de Baviera. Mi padre también fue un excelente pintor, así que para mí fue natural hacerme artista.

Define your aesthetic. I don’t have one particular style. I try to find a way of sampling many different styles and finding interesting hybrids. The freedom of this post-modern approach where all artistic languages coalesce is what I find most exciting.

Define tu estética. No tengo un estilo en particular. Intento encontrar una manera de englobar muchos estilos diferentes y hallar híbridos interesantes. La libertad de este enfoque post-moderno en el que todos los lenguajes artísticos se combinan, me parece emocionante.

Your source of inspiration. I have so many sources of inspiration, but if I had to choose it would be Leonardo da Vinci and the ancient Greek Phidias. The further back I look in time, the more mysterious and interesting it becomes. Of course I also like many modern artists, such as Picasso.

¿Cuál es tu fuente de inspiración? Tengo muchísimas fuentes de inspiración, pero si tuviera que elegir una en particular sería Leonardo da Vinci y Fidias, de la Grecia Antigua. Cuanto más me remonto en el tiempo, más interesante y misterioso me parece que es. Y, por supuesto, también me gustan muchos artistas modernos como Picasso.

The role colour plays in your art. Colour has always been important to me. I am attracted to it as most people are. My art is primarily concerned with line and colour. I am equally interested in both. The colours on LCD screens created in CYMK and RGB have also influenced the intensity of how I mix my colours. It has changed a great deal since Titian bought his pigments from the Rialto bridge in Venice.

¿Qué papel juega el color en tu arte? El color siempre ha sido importante para mí. Me atrae, como universalmente se siente atraída la mayoría de la gente. Mi arte se centra principalmente en las líneas y en el color. Me interesan por igual ambas cosas. Los colores de las pantallas LCD creados en CYMK y RGB influyen también en la intensidad de cómo yo mezclo mis colores. The message behind your art. Again, I am not a part of the old avant-garde modernist philosophy where art had a message to change the world, like many of the “-isms”. My art reflects what it is to be human and does not pretend to guide us into new preferred knowledge, although it does explore unknown pastures with insistent curiosity, but again not as a “colonial”. I endeavour to make art outside a cultural definition or national political standpoint. Much of the art I “appropriate” comes from many different cultures and when created does not refer back again specifically or in any noticeable way to its origin and former cultural meanings. Current projects. August 2019: Artist residency in Nice, France. This is part of the (He)art for (He)art Program run by Francisca Viudes. September 2019: Artist residency in Besson, France in Prince Charles-Henri de Lobkowicz’s Chateau du Bostz. September/October 2019: Artist residency in a castle in Corsica. October 2019: Group exhibition “Iconic Works” in the Ateneum Museum, Finland. The main painting from my most recent exhibition, “The School of Night” at the Saatchi Gallery will be shown. 2020: Solo exhibition “Hortus” of my new works. 2021: Solo exhibition in the new museum “The Box” in Plymouth, Devon. Where is your art taking you? It is an endless exploration of past cultures taking on different roles. There is no finishing line. It is not a linear progression. How visually thirsty are you? I am very thirsty for images even in an age where we are subjected to a barrage of them, from galleries to iPhones.

¿Qué mensaje transmite tu arte? Yo no formo parte de la vieja filosofía moderna vanguardista en la que el arte tenía un mensaje para cambiar el mundo como muchos de los “ismos”. Mi arte refleja qué significa ser humano y no pretende guiar hacia nuevos conocimientos elegidos, aunque sí explora situaciones desconocidas con insistente curiosidad, pero no para “colonizar”. Me esfuerzo por hacer arte fuera de una definición cultural o de un punto de vista político nacional. Gran parte del arte del que yo me “apropio” procede de muchas culturas diferentes y cuando se crea no se vuelve a referir, de manera específica o significativa, a su origen ni a sus anteriores significados culturales. Proyectos actuales. Agosto de 2019: Residencia artística en Niza, Francia, forma parte de (He)art del Programa (He)art dirigido por Francisca Viudes. This eagerly-awaited exhibition, part of a wider programme called Life Rewired on show throughout 2019, adds to the list of events on the theme of artificial intelligence mounted by museums and galleries all over the world. It is an immersive spectacle where visitors interact with avatars and algorithms to discover the potential of AI, encountering the works in an experience unfolding through a number of sections. The exhibition describes the rapid development of a technology that has influenced science and medicine, from its Shintoist Japanese origins and the first complex calculations carried out by Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace to the giant steps being taken today, exploring the different developments that occur when science and creativity progress hand-in-hand. The dream of creating artificial intelligence, which came true with the arrival of computers

La muestra tan esperada, que forma parte de Life Rewired, un extenso programa previsto para todo el 2019, ampliará la lista de eventos dedicados al tema de la inteligencia artificial en los museos y en las galerías de todo el mundo. There are four main sections: the The Dream of AI analyses the ancient human desire to give life to inanimate objects, found in the religious traditions of Shintoism and Judaism through to the mystical pseudo-science of alchemy, Mind Machines explains how AI has developed over the course of time, Data Worlds examines AI’s ability to improve commerce, enhancing society and our lives, and Endless Evolution looks to the future of humankind and speculates about the creation of new species.

What’s the narrative behind the women you portray? The women tell my secrets in coded scenes. We have our own visual language that has developed between us over the years.

They’re called concepts, and their main purpose is to pique the interest of potential owners. They’re mostly trial balloons sent up to measure the effect they create by designers who are recent arrivals on the scene, and going all out to get themselves noticed in the crowded (and often rather uniform in terms of the names chosen by clients) world of yacht design. Other proposals are deliberate attempts to shock by starchitects who leverage their fame to put forward projects that often leave fans more puzzled than entranced. To give just three examples, take the three Oceans (Emerald, Pearl and Sapphire) by Norman Foster, the two A yachts (first engine then sail powered) by Philippe Stark

Other examples show how yachts might look a few years from now, enough time to find an owner and a yard to build it. The versatile Roberto Curtò of RC Design, with a range of projects from an 8.5 metre RIB to a megayacht over 100 metres long, has created two proposals that overturn the traditional canons of yacht design while remaining true yachts. The first has been put was presented by Superyacht Monaco, so it’s likely to be built

in the near future - the Mauna Kea, a 101-metre vessel inspired by a huge dormant volcano in the Hawaiian islands. It features stairways that flow from the upper deck like lava to the heliport on the bows or the large swimming pool aft. The other proposal is the 63-metre Hypnosquid that Curtò describes in this way: “She comes from the mysterious attitude of squids: something unique in the nature, and not just for their strange morphology (can you tell where head ends and body begins?). They are mimetic through their skin, which they also use to show also their feelings, (that’s why Hypnosquid has coloured, shining LED windows). Squid eyes are bright and express intelligence...Hypno’s eyes are the saloon, from where you can observe what is around you. Their fluid dynamic body is elegant, fast and agile...they hypnotize divers with their movement and the shifting impressionist painting on their skin. Hypno’s random porthole positioning leads your eyes smoothly to the bow, where the tentacles join, hugging the hull”. Fascinated by the opportunities new technologies provide, naval architect Mathis Rühl offers wonderful yachts with paired masts mounting wide sails that rotate around a single point to save deck space. The sails can be folded and provide excellent performance in medium to strong winds at all points of sail, minimising drag when the yacht is under engine power, at anchor or in the inevitable squalls. Unusual, but extremely intriguing.

Fascinado por las posibilidades que ofrecen las nuevas tecnologías, el arquitecto naval Mathis Rühl propone mega veleros con dos pares de mástiles paralelos y una amplia superficie vélica, que pueden rotar en un único punto ahorrando espacio en la cubierta. Izan las velas plegables y ofrecen un excelente rendimiento con vientos medios o intensos en todos los puntos de la vela, minimizando la resistencia al aire durante los desplazamientos con el motor, los anclajes o las tormentas que inevitablemente el mar nos regala. It’s a phenomenon that’s on the rebound after a few crisis years, as more and more owners are once again starting to see the appeal of long races. Competitions that test crews over hundreds of sea miles and last at least a day and a night are currently the events of the moment for those seeking to take part in Europe’s great sail yacht challenges. We’re not talking about the trans-oceanic runs or round-the-world races reserved for the hyper-professionals of the sailing world, but competitions where those professionals may find themselves rubbing shoulders with family crews which, if reasonably skilful, can also dream of victory. The Mediterranean hosts at least ten events with great appeal and the backing of tradition, with ten setting out from the Atlantic coast of Spain, France or Britain, while the USA, Australia and the Asiatic seas also enjoy their fair share of such events.

Hablamos de regatas donde en la misma línea de partida se cruza el súper profesional ya mencionado con la tripulación familiar que, si tienen buen nivel, pueden apuntar a ganar. Existen unas diez regatas clásicas y atractivas, otras con su base en la costa atlántica del viejo continente (españolas, francesas e inglesas) y también hay en los Estados Unidos, Australia y en los mares asiáticos.

The most recently-launched is also the fastest-growing event. Its 10th and latest edition was fought out by 220 yachts. The 151 Miglia offers a wonderful variety of almost unique features, where landscapes change every two hours. It threads through the Tuscan archipelago with one leg finishing at the Giraglia rock, off Capo Corso. The rock also gives its name to a great Mediterranean offshore yacht classic, the Giraglia Rolex Cup, a 241-mile race between St. Tropez and Monaco, rounding the lighthouse marking the extreme northern tip of France’s largest island. Rolex also sponsors the Fastnet Race, which is only held in odd-numbered years. It’s the world’s biggest offshore race, and was first contested in 1925. This 605mile event is a trial of strategy and skill in challenging marine currents and unpredictable weather. The fleet sets out from the Cowes Royal Yacht Squadron, sails out of the Solent and across the often-stormy Irish Sea to reach Fastnet Rock off Ireland’s south coast before returning to the finish line in Plymouth. The 48th Fastnet Race starts on 9 August 2019, with the now normal limited field of 300 entrants. The 1979 was a terrible experience during which “fifteen sailors died, five boats sank, and at least 75 boats flipped upside down”.

Rolex Fastnet Race 2017

This series of great offshore races contested under the Geneva-based watch brand’s familiar crown is completed by the Middle Sea Race and the Sidney Hobart. The first is held in the heart of the Mediterranean, with one of the world’s most beautiful courses. Competitors start in Malta and return there after covering 606 nautical miles across the deep blue waters of Sicily and the Strait of Messina, past the islands of Pantelleria and Lampedusa, with the active volcano of Stromboli as a mark. The autumn setting often poses huge problems for crews and yachts, who must struggle with squalls that decimate the fleet. On the other side of the world the most famous race begins on Boxing Day, 26th December, and links Sydney with Hobart, the Tasmanian capital. It has been held 74 times so far with a tally of nine boats sunk and the death of eleven sailors. In the dramatic 1998 race six sailors died and five yachts sank. Only 44 of the 115 yachts that started the race managed to reach the finish.

The USA offers the Newport Bermuda Race, one of the few international offshore races scheduled regularly since the first time it was held, and one of only two regularlyheld races in the world taking place almost entirely out of sight of land. The 52nd Bermuda Race (first held in 1906) is set to take place in June 2020. The other all-offshore race is the Transpac, also launched in 1906. It begins off the Pt. Fermin buoy in San Pedro, California and ends off Diamond Head in Hawaii, a distance of 2.225 nautical miles.

My dad was a DJ and I wanted to be like him. I really enjoyed the way music could make you feel, from creating it to mixing records. In your live sets you incorporate a range of instruments, vocalists and percussionists. What is your reason for this? I love to improvise and create things in the moment, especially when the audience joins in. It’s very personal and exciting for me. It becomes more like a street festival and can be very unpredictable, but it is fun to see where it goes.

What track defines Ibiza to you? I have so many I love, and it is impossible for me to pick just one. I’ve been back and forth to Ibiza since the early 90s, so each year there is a song for that season.

Time is a strange phenomenon. It runs fast, straight as an arrow and never reverses, almost as if following a direct line towards the future. Yet if we look closely it does sometimes seem to turn back on itself. Every 60 minutes, every 24 hours, every 365 days. Regular, as they say, as clockwork. So we may begin to suspect that Time is, in fact, circular. This theory may have been in the mind of the many clockmakers who from the second half of the previous millennium onwards always gave a circular shape to the instruments created to measure it. A flight of fancy, perhaps, or more likely on technical, practical grounds. The gears inside a clock that govern its operation are always circular, and so is the perimeter traced by its hands, pivoting around one extremity. Over the centuries the time we measure artificially has by convention turned around itself. However, the most creative, disruptive independent watchmakers have recently thrown away the rule book, displaying their distinctive brazen audacity and overturning centuries of horological practice to measure time in the correct way. The result is a series of new, experimental mechanical and design solutions. And although time keeps on running like before, its representation has changed. Now it’s displayed on parallel rollers inside a sapphire crystal tube (which can be taken out to make a small desktop clock) by the futuristic-looking Weap-One by Rebellion, or marked by two rotating hemispheres in the biomorphic Horological Machine N°6 Final Edition from the conceptual laboratory of MB&F. The UR-111C Black by Urwerk features a sort of infinite screw, while for Hautlence, time has finally become three-dimensional, with the unusual spherical hours of its HL Sphere 01.

Es cierto que el tiempo es un fenómeno extraño. Su andar es expeditivo, va derecho rápidamente y sin mirar hacia atrás, casi como si siguiera una línea recta trazada hacia el futuro. Sin embargo, si se observa con atención, termina volviendo, de alguna manera, hacia sí mismo. Cada 60 minutos, cada 24 horas, cada 365 días. Es rutinario, cíclico. A tal punto que se podría pensar que ese tiempo es, en realidad, redondo. Una hipótesis que fue considerada por un gran número de relojeros, quienes desde la segunda mitad del milenio pasado en adelante, le han dado forma circular al mismo objeto que lo mide. Quizás por una razón onírica aunque es más probable que sea por un motivo técnico – práctico. De hecho, son circulares los engranajes que gobiernan al reloj desde su interior y, también, es circular el perímetro diseñado por los indicadores, es decir las manecillas, unidas entre sí en uno de sus dos extremos. Ese tiempo, el que se mide artificialmente, desde hace siglos y por convención, gira sobre sí mismo. Quien ha pensado en cambiar las reglas y volverlas a escribir totalmente, es la relojería independiente, que es más creativa y detonante. Con la desfachatez que la caracteriza, ha negado siglos de historia para comenzar a tener su propio modo de considerar al tiempo. Dando vida a nuevas soluciones experimentales tanto desde un punto de vista dinámico como de diseño. El tiempo sigue transcurriendo como siempre, pero su representación ha mutado. Indicado en dos rodillos paralelos que se encuentran dentro de un tubo de cristal de zafiro (el cual se puede extraer para transformarse en un reloj de mesa), como en el caso del Weap-One de la futurista Rebellion. O ritmado por los dos hemisferios oscilantes del Horological Machine N°6 Final Edition con su diseño biomórfico realizado en el laboratorio conceptual de MB&F. Alineado a lo largo de una especie de tornillo sin fin como es el caso del UR-111C Black, creación visionaria de Urwerk. Y, convertido en tridimensional, gracias a Hautlence y a su representación esférica de las horas en su HL Sphere 01.

If there really is a place where we can feel totally immersed in an apotheosis of colour beneath a cascade of flowers, through arches and vaults and past walls cloaked in heady perfumes, then it must be the famous, much-visited Wisteria Tunnel in the Kawachi Fuji Gardens. In Kitakyushu, southern Japan, a town in the Fukuoka prefecture, blossom time is an event on a par with our New Year’s celebrations, a pyrotechnic spectacle of lilac, pink, red, blue, amaranth, orange and a thousand more colours that we would never otherwise see, even on an artist’s palette. It’s the epitome of Japanese philosophy, which dedicates extraordinary care and attention to plants and flowers. A way of nurturing the spirit and allowing yourself to be transported into Nature’s beauty and incredible perfection, long cared for, protected and honoured by this enlightened people. Many flock here at blossom time to experience this extraordinary oasis of peace, admire the pastel tones and enjoy a Zen moment, re-establishing contact with our centre of being. There are two gardens to visit – the first offers 150 plants from over 22 species with various colours, shapes and dimensions of wisteria, filling the air with inebriating perfumes, while the second is home to 700 lovingly-tended maple trees. Open to the public twice a year, in spring (from late April to late May, enabling visitors simply to admire this one species) and in autumn (the last two weeks of November, in the period when the maples

The senses and emotions are overwhelmed by the perfumes and visual impact that not even a Technicolor film can achieve. The wisteria is named after Dr Caspar Wistar, an anatomist at the University of Pennsylvania. He made an extensive study of wisterias, a plant of the pea family that includes ten species of native woody climbers from the eastern United States, China, Korea and Japan. Its branches can exceed twenty metres in height and ten metres in width. The flowers hang in bunches ten to eighty centimetres long, and are purple, pink or white in colour, with a dazzling variety of shades and combinations. The maples are no less spectacular, entrancing autumn visitors with a display like a light, delicate, many-coloured snowfall. The success of the Kawachi Fuji Gardens lies in providing an opportunity to experience the changing face of nature as it wakes and as it slips back into sleep, a wonderfully romantic event that is greatly enjoyed, especially by the young couples who come to exchange eternal promises here in a state of grace that inspires love in its universal essence. These Zenlike spaces are tended by the skilful hands of the Japanese gardeners who have transformed the Kitakyushu gardens into an irreplaceable work of art.
