Caroline County, Virginia Board of Supervisors
Dear BMW MOA National Rally,
On behalf of the citizens of Caroline County and the entire Board of Supervisors, I want to welcome you to Caroline County, Virginia!
We are especially gratified that the BMW MOA National Rally is spending its 50th Anniversary with us; and just in time for the celebration of Caroline born Secretariat’s 50th Anniversary of winning the Triple Crown.
We hope you will enjoy Caroline’s rich hist ory during your rides. Pirates sailed near Port Royal (Route 301 north) on the Rappahannock. John Wilkes Booth was brought to justice outside of the County Seat of Bowling Green near Fort A.P. Hill. The Loving’s championed civil rights while living in the beautiful community of Sparta. Millions of years ago amazing animals swam and ran just a few miles west of the Meadow. Giant whale bones are displayed at the County Visitor Center in Carmel Church (Exit 104 on I-95).
While you are with us, we hope you will visit our towns, travel our scenic byways, meet our friendly citizens and enjoy Virginia and all it has to offer.
County staff is here to help during your event, so please drop by our table if you have any questions, or need assistance.
Again, we are delighted you will be spending some of your summer with us in Caroline County. We wish you a safe enjoyable stay filled with good weather, fellowship, and fun.
Sincerely,
Floyd Thomas Chairman, Caroline County Board of Supervisors Mattaponi District

2023 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY 3
WELCOME TO THE 50TH!
Paula and I welcome you to the Meadow Event Park, home of The 50th National Rally! We, along with many, many dedicated volunteers and staff have been working hard for the past year to get you to this point, here and ready to participate in the MOA’s 50th NATIONAL RALLY!!
We’re really excited to have you here and truly hope you’ll take the opportunity to make new friends, have new experiences, learn new things and hopefully take a bit of time to volunteer and make this a better rally for someone else. As Rally Chairs, Paula and I may be the people you associate with this rally, but we can guarantee none of this would happen without the army of dedicated volunteers, take a few minutes and thank one of our many volunteers for taking time from their rally to volunteer. Paula and I thank our many volunteers from the bottom of our hearts. We have so many new and exciting things going on this year it’s going to be impossible for you to see and do everything. To help you navigate all that’s going on the MOA has developed an all-new Rally App, downloadable to your phone to help make sure you don’t miss any of the important stuff. Be sure and download it and check it out, it’ll be a lifesaver, helping you stay in the know about what’s going on and when.
Our vendor hall, located at the Farm Bureau Center, will have over 100 vendors, offering you everything you never knew you needed for your motorcycle adventures. We are huge proponents of supporting those who support the MOA. Most of these vendors are here year after year, providing door prizes, etc. show them some love. The Farm Bureau Center will also be the location of our 100 Years of BMW Motorcycles Vintage Display as well as “Center Stage” discussions and presentations by vendors, check it out. Be sure and look into our over 100 seminars where you can learn how to right a bike after it’s taken a dirt nap to riding around the world and almost everything in between – we’ve got a great list of seminars led by world class presenters.
Check out the “Thrill Pit” where you can watch the pro’s tackle off-road obstacles or, if you’re really brave you can jump in there and give it a go along with some training to help you tackle the course. Then you can take a hike or jump on one of our convenient shuttles and take a ride up to the overland area where you’re sure to see some interesting overlanding rigs.
Brewfest is back, located at the Meadow Pavilion on Friday from 1-5pm (must be 21, tickets required) where you can sample local brewers’ beer to find the best of the best.
4 2023 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY
If beer doesn’t bring enough excitement into your life take a chance and purchase discounted tickets to King’s Dominion across the street and see if a loopdie-loop roller coaster will do it for you – take your whole family for some fun!
We’ve got a great lineup of nightly entertainment which will be sure to get you tapping your toes if not getting up and “shaking that thing”. Saturday night we have a comedy troupe to open up our evening’s festivities –check them out for some good old fashioned belly laughs.
If all that doesn’t make you REALLY excited for the next few days, then maybe this will……In addition to nightly Grand Prize giveaways valued at over $1,500 each we’re giving away a motorcycle a night, culminating with the extremely hard to find R nineT 100th Anniversary Edition.
Finally, and most importantly, as previously stated, take some time to make new friends. Motorcycle adventures are much more fun when you have a good friend to share them with.
Sincerely,
Wes & Paula Fitzer

BigEar, Inc (Value $1,953)
BigEar Custom Triple Speaker Earbuds with Go Blue Unit & the Ones with all the Filters
For years we have all struggled to hear our communication systems through the wind and outside road noise while escaping life on our motorcycles. Whether we wanted to listen to our music or hear our wives or buddies, it was always difficult while on the road. To compensate, we’ve purchased systems at a booth, in a store, or online through vendors that claim to have a better solution. We’ve sat in our driveway, installed that system, and boy, did it sound good! Then we went for a ride. Those supposedly new and improved systems did not perform as promised because the wind and road noise rose over 105dB. It was impossible to hear your music or partner over the roar.
Big Ear Inc. has a solution for your frustration on the open road. Finally, you can hear your communication system while enjoying your fantastic motorcycle adventures. Choose if you would like to go with Bluetooth or just hard wire into your newer communication system. Plug your cord into your Big Ear earplugs, and go. The clarity and sound are unparalleled to anything on the market. Big Ears Custom in-Ear Earbuds that are convertible from Bluetooth to wired to work with all communication systems.

FIRST TIME AT THE RALLY
“I’m excited to spend time exploring Virginia and meeting new people at the rally!”
– Cynthia Herman
“I’m excited to travel with my wife to the rally from Ohio and to explore the area. It should be fun meeting new riders and seeing what the MOA is all about.”
– Kim Herman
“My wife, McKenzie, and I are looking forward to our first rally ever. We’ll always be able to remember when our first was with how memorable this one is, celebrating 50 years with MOA and 100 years with BMW Mottorad. After an 11year hiatus of having a motorcycle in the garage, we bought a 40th Anniversary R 1250 GSA this past year. Ever since, it’s been nothing but planning what we want to do and where to go with the bike, doing small trips in the meantime. We are hoping to make some new friends and riding mates at the rally, expand our knowledge and just have a good time. It’ll be even more of a bonus to meet Sam Manicom after reading all his books.”

“I’m excited to see what the Rally entails over the course of three days. I think just being able to meet other enthusiasts who share in the common love of BMWs will be the biggest part for me. My work schedule doesn’t always line up for trips and rallies but the timing is absolutely perfect for me this year so come hell or high water I’ll be there! I’m making the trek from Nova Scotia for this one, hoping to link up with other riders heading that way and learn all about the rally experience once I get there. The vendors and ability to purchase moto related gear on site is an excellent bonus as well! I hope making new friends and learning about the Rally experience will only fuel the fire to attend every year possible from here out!”
– Sterling van der Putten
“I am extremely excited to attend the MOA Rally in Richmond. I have owned motorcycles since I was 14 but have only owned BMW motorcycles for the past two years. I have a 2019 K 1600 B as well as a 2022 R 18 TC. It will be a short journey to the Rally for me as I live on western side of Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley, but I am super excited that my daughter and wife will also take part in the Rally. The hardest decision I have is to decide which bike to take. Hope to meet many new and exciting people at the Rally.”

“I’ve ridden BMW motorcycles since the mid-1970s and toured much of the lower 48. Last summer, a Beemer brother and I rode from Virginia to Alaska and back. For some reason, I hadn’t joined MOA until just before the Alaska trip. It feels good to know that the association and fellow riders have my back. Thanks!
How could I miss this year’s rally when it’s right in my backyard? Meadow Event Park is a great spot and I’m volunteering during the rally. I look forward to welcoming thousands of the Best Motorcycle riders in the World to Virginia.”

“I am looking forward to attending The 50th. I have been a MOA member since 2010; I live in northeastern Ohio and belong to two local BMW clubs, the Cleveland and Four Winds chapters (Pittsburgh, Penn.) and have been riding for over 30 years. Work and/ or family commitments have prevented me from attending previous rallies, however with this year being the 50th Anniversary it is just too special to miss. My first BMW was 12 years ago, a 2009 K1300 GT. Last year when I was considering getting a GS Adventure, I reached out to Jennifer Ott and she was incredibly helpful in answering questions about options and availability of the bikes. She is an MOA member and sells them for a BMW dealership in Detroit. She also informed me that as a MOA member I would receive a $500 discount from BMW. She helped me locate the bike I wanted at Kissell’s Motorsports in Pennsylvania, where I ended up purchasing the bike from Josh Nolten. I have found the MOA membership does a lot to help fellow members, even if it cost them a sale.”
John Adarmski
– John Adamski
“I am looking forward to the rally since I have never attended before. I just bought my current ride, the BMW R 18 TC, last fall. I am most looking forward to attending the rally because I am riding again. About 13 years ago, I had a serious back injury and sold my BMW R 1200 R when I was going through medical treatments and physical therapy since I thought I would never ride again. I needed a new bike that had a soft suspension, smooth and refined acceleration and braking and that had great stability on the road. Abrupt movements and bumps can still cause me back issues. I looked at Indians, Harleys and BMWs—ultimately choosing the R 18 TC after a test ride.”

“Since we are new to BMW motorcycles we are looking forward to the rally for a variety of reasons! Meeting with MOA members and making new riding connections. Learning about and becoming a part of the MOA community. We are excited to experience the rally and hope to enjoy the all the event has to offer!”
– Jim and Barbara, Albuquerque NM
“Thank you for making me feel so very welcome; I was supposed to attend for the first time last year, but crazy health quirks got in the way. I cannot believe that you again extended the MOA hand and invited me back as a guest. What a great organization! I have never been a rally kind of person because I was usually the only non-Harley rider among my friends, and the rallies they liked to attend were not my kind of gathering. After spending time with other BMW riders at RawHyde, DART and the GS Giant Go Big last year, I found hanging out at riding events can be really fun and enriching. There is nothing like finding your people! I look forward to meeting everybody in June at the first timers meeting!”
– Susan Rushing
“Can’t wait to meet everybody at the rally. I have been to many bike shows, rallies and events over the years, but have never been to a BMW MOA rally. I have been riding for over 40 years but never owned a BMW until now. Boy was I missing out! The Rally sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun. My son-inlaw is a new member also. He’s the one that told me about MOA.”

“The only MOA events I’ve ever gone to are the Fontana Getaways, so I have no clue what to expect from a rally, especially the National. This year’s rally made sense as a father-son motorcycle activity, as it’s pretty much in the middle between us. It also works out conveniently for us as my sister lives in the Richmond area, so we’re going to be staying with her and commuting to the rally each day. I’m looking forward to the first-timers event as I’ll meet some people that way.”
Tim Tolson
“I bought my first BMW, a 1974 BMW R 75/6 with large tank, brand new from Morton’s Garage in Spotsylvania, Virginia, when I was a rising senior in high school. I think I joined the MOA a year or two after that, believing group support was important. I know I’ve been a member of the MOA for decades, reading the Owners News and lurking on the old listservs. Occasionally in the last 10 years I’ve considered attending a national rally, but the timing or location didn’t work out. When this year’s rally was announced, that took care of any location objection—it’s close and I retired in March! The idea that it was the 50th Rally helped motivate me as well. The final motivator was last summer I and my best friend from my high school days (Jim), took an 8,000-plus-mile trip to Alaska and back on our R 1200 RTs. Jim joined the MOA before we went and was interested in attending a rally, so we decided to attend together. After decades of excuses, I’m excited to attend my first BMW MOA rally—despite being an introvert.
Despite being an introvert, I’m look forward to my first rally!”

ENTERTAINMENT LINEUP
By Lee Harrelson #145612, Rally Entertainment Chair
We will have a great entertainment lineup for you this year, with the main stage adjacent to the beer garden. We are doubling down on local talent and showcasing a wide variety of musical styles.
Y
ou know Wes. Right? I’m talking about Wes Fleming, the guy dispensing mechanical wisdom on all things BMW motorcycle in BMW Owners News and online, along with the podcasts he does. Well, Wes has been hiding a little secret from most of us. As it turns out, Wes is a rocker and the lead guitar player in a Richmond-based rock group called 7th. Grade Girl Fight. Wes and his band are going to set Wednesday night on fire for our dedicated volunteers arriving early to help set up for the rally. Wes and 7th. Grade Girl Fight take the stage at 7 p.m.
Thursday is always a busy day at the rally. As opening day, Thursday is the day when most rally-goers arrive onsite, get registered, find a camping spot and track down their old friends and begin making new ones. Vendors will open on Thursday, and seminars will kick off that morning, so make your plans accordingly. Just make sure you are back at rally central for the music that night.
Peach Street Revival, a four-piece band from Grand Junction, Colorado, plays classic rock, blues and punk. The band provides both a rockin’ performance of their original songs and covers some of classic rock’s greats, including Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The
Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Rush, Queen and more!
Peach Street Revival takes the stage at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Then, at 9 p.m. Thursday evening, a longtime staple in Richmond’s local music scene years, The Bart Chucker Band, takes the stage. This five-piece, Americana music-styled group plays many favorites, from Tyler Childers to Stones, and from Johnny Cash to Prince.
Friday night’s show starts at 7 p.m. with Shoot To Thrill, a five-piece all-female AC/DC tribute band that has been touring the country and tearing up stages with their hard driving rock and roll. AC/DC never looked or sounded any better that this!
Our Rally headliner, Yates McKendree, takes the stage Friday night at 9 p.m. Although he’s only 21-years-old, Yates McKendree’s experience as a professional musician goes back more than a decade. His early experience includes playing regularly in some of Nashville’s most notable venues including The Bluebird Cafe, The Ryman Auditorium, as well as 3rd & Lindsley. McKendree has North American and

European tours under his belt and has made multiple appearances on national television.
In the studio, McKendree has played on and engineered many recording projects, most notably for Delbert McClinton and John Hiatt, who told Rolling Stone Magazine, “Yates was our secret ingredient.”
McKendree’s just-released debut album Buchanan Lane features both classic cover tunes and his own work. Co-written with Gary Nicholson, the album highlights McKendree’s skills, remarkable style and taste as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, with an emphasis on guitar.
McKendree’s father, Kevin, was the keyboard player in Delbert McClinton’s band way back at the Johnson City, Tennessee, National Rally in 2009. Yates has been soaking up the vibes and learning his chops from his father, and I knew it would not be long before this kid grew up to play the blues.
Saturday’s rally entertainment is going to be different this year! It seems Richmond is a hot bed of comedians, so we’ve rounded up four of the best to perform for us for about an hour or so to warm up rally-goers before Saturday night’s music kicks off.
Beginning around 7 p.m., comedienne Sarah Ahmed will lead a group of four hilarious folks and keep the laughter rolling until about 8 p.m. when Bonnie Bishop takes the stage.
I first met Bishop at a party to celebrate Capricorn Records reopening in Macon, Georgia, a couple of years ago. Bishop is a Texas songwriter who has worked in Nashville, toured Europe and was getting noticed by some big-name producers like Dave Cobb, who produced her “Ain’t Who I Was” album in 2016. A divorce in Nashville and a return to Texas fueled her soulful record “House Sessions” in 2019, and she has been touring and writing ever since, releasing nine albums since 2002.

Brewfest
This popular rally event offers attendees a chance to sample the best local beers and ciders, no matter where the rally is, and every year it sells out quickly. In Richmond, Brewfest is scheduled for Friday from 1-5 p.m., and brewmasters will be on hand to discuss the flavor, process, and love for craft beer.

VINTAGE BMW DISPLAY AND SEMINAR
By Lee Deyoung #31683, Vintage Display Chair
This year the MOA and VintageBMW.org have gotten together to celebrate its 100th anniversary of BMW motorcycles. In honor of that, we have opened up the Vintage display for BMW’s built from 1923 through 1993. We have had a great interest this year in the display and, with pre-registering along with walk-ins, we are expecting to have north of 70 motorcycles.
Enthusiasts will be amazed at the site of antique and classic models, museum restorations and daily riders ranging from the early 1920s through 1993. There will be pre-war singles and twins from the ‘20s and ‘30s, such as the R32, which was the 1st BMW motorcycle made, as well as sport
machines like the R57 or R17, and the work horses R11 or R12. Also on display will be post-war models such as R51/2, the 1st twin made after the war, along with an assortment of /2s, /5s, /6s, /7s, R90s, sport and touring bikes of the ‘80s and early ‘90s.
All will be highlighting the evolution of BMW design, engineering, and the current state of technology of the day. The variety of bikes on display include those which have been lovingly and painstakingly restored, and others carefully and mindfully preserved as original, each representing an important part of the BMW motorcycle story.
Vintage owners and restorers Bob Lonergan, Jack Wells and Lee Deyoung, will lead a

seminar on Friday morning “Restoration and Preservation of Vintage BMWs.” Check the rally schedule for location. The presenters have personally restored and ridden antique and classic BMWs and are experts in their fields. They will discuss mechanics, electrics, paint, storage, insurance, and the history of these machines. How-to’s and resources will highlight the seminar along with discussion and a Q & A. Participation is encouraged. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who have or are in the process of restoring a vintage bike, or contemplating doing so, to meet, network and share information.
The exhibited bikes can be judged (which is strictly optional) Saturday morning starting at 9:00 AM. Judging is based on factory originality (with some exceptions such as period accessories, racers, and sidecar rigs) and the AMCA philosophy where each bike is assessed on its own merits beginning at 100 points. The Awards Ceremony will take place Saturday, 1:30 PM, at the display site. Bikes rated over 95 will receive an Award of Excellence. Two special memorial awards will be presented: The Vern Mitchell Trophy to the enthusiast who accurately and beautifully restored a pre-1993 bike on his or her own, and The Jim Falk Award to the visionary who actively promotes the restoration and preservation of vintage BMWs. At the end of the ceremony, there will be a raffle for owners who entered their BMW in the Vintage display.
The Vintage Display defines the historic importance of BMWs as bikes to be studied, treasured, and enjoyed. Collectors, restorers, and enthusiasts are invited and encouraged to exhibit their vintage machines. All rally participants are welcome to visit the exhibit for a journey through BMW motorcycles’ traditions and history.

RIDE ROUTES
Lake Anna
Looking for a short ride and place to eat off the rally grounds? This is the route for you! Lake Anna offers great roads, stunning scenery and a number of restaurants, breweries, and wineries on the north west end of the lake. It’ll take you about an hour to get out and another back.
ridewithgps.com/routes/41682521
GS Fun Run
This route may not be the most challenging for many adventure riders, but at least there are some unpaved roads close by to scratch that itch. Don’t pay attention to Ride With GPS about the amount of paved roads. There is a higher percentage of unpaved roads on this route than RWGPS thinks. One tank of gas should be plenty on a modern GS. Although we have marked the nearest gas locations if you need it along with some food and tourist options.
ridewithgps.com/routes/42085482
Colonial America
This will be a good day’s ride through Colonial America. We start near John Smith’s settlement and fort on the south side of the James River. After crossing the ferry on the James Rivers, you’ll be at Jamestown, the first English settlement in the colonial Americas. Then historic colonial Williamsburg is nearby if that is your thing before we get over to where the revolutionaries affirmed the birth of a nation at Yorktown battlefield.

Presidential Birthplaces and Homes
Visit 5 homes or birthplaces of former American Presidents. This route will take some time, but there are plenty of places to bail out and return back to the rally grounds if time is not working in your favor. However, seeing the places where American forefathers were raised and lived is an interesting sight to see. ridewithgps.com/routes/42085238
Ride With GPS
To access these routes along with other routes and points of interests, download the Ride with GPS application for your phone. Inside the Ride with GPS app, navigate or touch “Shortcut” on the Home screen or under the “More” menu item. Scan the QR code below. This will take you to the BMW MOA’s Ride with GPS Experience for the BMW MOA 2023 Rally.
Why do we use the Ride With GPS service?
Ride with GPS allows you download many different GPS files types including GPX for the BMW Navigator series and other Garmin products (i.e. Zumo). When downloading GPX files for Garmin products, only download the ‘GPX Track’ version. Downloading the ‘GPX Route’ version will leave you at the mercy of the settings on your Garmin GPS and will take you off the planned route and maybe to unexpected places and road conditions. Once you have the ‘GPX Track’ version imported into your device, you can enable turn by turn navigation by converting the ‘track’ on your Garmin GPS to a ‘trip’

What does it mean to
“As a member of the Richmond BMW Riders club, I always felt accepted even though I only rode Triumphs! I also attended multiple BMW MOA rallies on Triumphs. In 2016 I bought a new BMW GS Adventure and became a MOA member. When I heard the rally was coming to my hometown, I knew I had to contribute and accepted the position as Chair of the Hospitality Committee! What a great bunch of people—I’m hooked!”
Steve
Johnson – Hospitality Chair
“The National Rally for me is many things, but the most rewarding thing is volunteering and helping people; introducing new members to the club and helping them connect to the right areas, seminars, people, etc. is what I find rewarding. The vendor booths are valuable as they give me the ability to talk in person about products and how they may work for me. The last piece, maybe the biggest reason why I’m a member and attend the National Rally, is simply the camaraderie—meeting old friends and making new ones.”
Greg Beck – Safety Committee Chair
62 2023 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY
be a volunteer?
“As I started riding, I quickly learned this pastime is about much more than the motorbikes or the thrill of riding on an amazing route. What excites me the most is getting to know our community and hearing the stories that move us as much as our machines. Rallies provide a perfect place for this to happen. I can’t wait to celebrate the many milestones that have brought our community this far and dream about the future with my two-wheeled family. See you at the 50th!”
Tami Bakke – Virginia Crossings Special Events Chair
“I enjoy the energy and excitement of the MOA rally. Meeting and visiting with “new to me” members and old friends is always refreshing. I’m looking forward to a great experience.”
Thomas Wintz
“The 50th BMW MOA rally is so special because the MOA changed my life. It brought me love, friendship and a career. I am so looking forward to seeing all the wonderful friends I have met in the MOA!”
Jennifer Ott – Social Media Chair
2023 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY 63
Why I keep coming back
“My family and I attend the MOA National Rally every year to see family and friends and to travel to new destinations each year.”
Jean Excell – Fun & Games Chair
“Attending the BMW MOA National Rally allows me the opportunity to reconnect with friends I might only have the chance to see but once a year. The National Rally lets me share stories of our riding adventures and bucket list items I want to check off with old friends and new friends made at the rally.”
Chad Warner – ADV Area Chair
“We have been with the MOA for many years and the one thing we look forward to most is the National rally. We love everything about the rally from rider training, a huge variety of classes, tons of vendors, on-site mechanics and tire installation, live music, good food, fun areas to ride in, a ton of awesome people to hang out with and best of all—CAMPING! We have always volunteered in various capacities at all events we attend as a way to give back, but also as a way to meet more people. We hope everyone enjoys the rally and makes the most of this awesome experience.”
Chad & Rhonnie Garcia – RV Chairs
64 2023 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY
“When someone tells you that volunteering at a rally really allows you to become immersed in the experience, introduces you to a whole new group of people, expands your horizon just a bit.
BELIEVE THEM! I literally cannot count all the lifelong friendships I have made within the MOA family—they are some of the closest friends I have even if we only see each other one week a year! There are a number of faces I start looking for the moment I enter the rally grounds! People I look forward to seeing all year. Times we share together are the riches in life. Don’t let them pass you by.”
Lee Harrelson – Entertainment Committee Chair
“Being part of this rally gives me the privilege of giving back to my fellow members what the MOA has given me for the past 18 years. I have learned so much about riding a motorcycle, what to wear, how to wear it, where to go and how to enjoy it! I think any fellow rider understands what I’m getting at. Everybody who comes to The 50th has an opportunity to be part of the passion, the camaraderie and this wonderful MOA family!”
Frank Florio – Membership & Recruiting Chair
“Motorcycles and the people who ride them are what makes everything about the Rally special. The call to take to the roads and meet friends both old and recent, plus make new ones. The chance to exchange stories and laugh with like-minded people. I moved to Colorado from Connecticut many years ago. I will see old friends from Connecticut and ones made through the years from all over the country. New to the “family?” Volunteer. You will be surprised at how much fun you have.”
Susanna Parkhouse – Children’s Charity Committee Chair
2023 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY 65
“My first National Rally was in 1996, and at that time there weren’t many Beemers out there. That Rally opened my eyes. I was not alone! Mad Dog, Charlie and Deb, Joe from Hawaii, Kent the Ice Man… I could go on. What a great group to know, and all thanks to the National Rally.”
Pat Dial – Receiving Chair
“The farther the National Rally is from home, the better, because the ride getting there is always a great adventure as I seek out back roads, abandon places and historical points. More importantly, volunteering at the rally to help setup MOA events gives me the chance to meet old friends again and make new ones.”
Roger Trendowski – Peoples Choice Bike Show Chair
Sharing the passion
“The annual national rally mysteriously attracts me every year. The promise of thousands of BMWs, gathered in one friendly place, with people and their stories from all over the continent (and beyond) is just irresistible. The history of these bikes, the technical innovation embodied in their many models over the last ten decades, and the friendships bonded at the BMW MOA rallies is really special. I am so looking forward to meeting riders from all different backgrounds, with their unique experiences, bonded together over the riding of these fantastic bikes. Whether we are riding Airheads, K bikes, GSes or the new R18s, we love it, don’t we? See you there!”
Hans C. Reumschuessel #56267, Chair, Closing Committee
66 2023 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY
“For me volunteering at the National rally was originally about making new friends. It became a passion when my wife got involved and we could volunteer as a team. There is something to be said about family and the BMW MOA group is just that. We look forward to the yearly reunion and catching up with friends we have made through the years. Want to meet new people and make new friends? Volunteer at the National Rally, you know you want to.”
Corey Smith - Logistics Team
“I really love coming to the rallies every year and volunteering in the Sweet Information Booth. I enjoy meeting and helping rally attendees by handing out cold water, hygiene supplies, and candy in addition to giving directions and providing information. This year I created a unique club tee-shirt quilt to be raffled off at the Sweet Information Booth. Come by and sit a spell, and let me help make your rally experience one to remember.
“The BMW MOA Rally has become a staple in my summer plans for the past 10 years or so. The rally provides opportunities that I might not otherwise have access to or have the time to do in just a few days. The rally fills many buckets for me, providing an opportunity to see parts of the country with a purpose. I look forward to the many pictures, videos and memories I will never forget—documenting them is part of the fun! Everyone who attends a rally is there because they want to be; it’s a gathering of our nationwide community!
You can read more of my story and my joy of rallying at https://rally.bmwmoa.org/phil-and-thejoy-of-rallying/ and see how serious I take my volunteering and motorcycling. As a former Regional Coordinator and a current member of the Board of Directors, I am excited to volunteer to be the Chair of the Center Stage at this historic 50th BMW MOA Rally. Please stop by Center Stage and learn more about the many people who put time and effort into making this rally better for all of us.”

“I look forward to our annual National Rally because I truly enjoy volunteering with my Coffee Committee family. It’s alway a challenge and a great deal of satisfaction getting that morning coffee out there to our members. Although I may only see the majority of you only once a year, it’s always as if no time has slipped by between us. I’m grateful for the MOA for making all of our rallies memorable and exciting. Malama pono, Surfajoe!”
Joe Natividad – Coffee Committee Co-Chair
“The National Rally is special to me, and I have attended every one since 1989 except for 2021 when the US/Canada border was closed. I volunteered at every one, which introduced me to so many people who became my second family. The Rally is our family reunion. I co-chaired the first and last (so far) International Rally in Canada and facilitated seminars such as Women of the Iron Butt and Women Who Ride. In 1996 I met and, subsequently, married Ross Copas, an Iron Butt winner, MOA member and longtime Chair of the Charging Station. He still gives me a charge!”
Jean Copas - Co-Chair Charging Station
“My first MOA rally was the first time we met in Redmond, Oregon, in the late 1990s. ALL the people I met were just so much fun to talk to and hang with, and that has been the case with every rally I have attended. I also found that when I started volunteering at the MOA Rallies, I got to work with some equally nice and engaging people. That has continued to this day, and I look forward to celebrating the MOA’s 50th rally in biker fellowship.”
Paul Wilson – 50/50 Chair
68 2023 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY
BMW MOA is family!
“The National rally represents family, friendship and community. The first national rally I attended was in Spokane, Washington 2004. On the way back home I married my husband. In 2009 we made it a family tradition by bringing our three-month-old son to the rally in Johnson City, Tennessee—and he’s attended every rally since! This rally is special because it’s our two wheeled family vacation every year. I get to travel to different places across this beautiful country and have amazing adventures with my family, see some gorgeous sights and meet new friends from all over the world. I love the National rally because it’s the family I choose!”
Allison Gifford - Volunteer Committee Chair
“The National Rally is a special gathering of folks that enjoy an adventurous, therapeutic, bonding hobby/pastime/sport to experience new products, techniques, travel stories and the camaraderie of our vast membership.”
Shep Brown – 50/50 Chair
“I’ve been riding for over 50 years, but it wasn’t until experiencing my first MOA National Rally—Moodus, 1994—that I experienced the camraderie of motorcycling. Being able to travel all over the country and to hang out with 5,000 or so good friends is what gets me on the road every time.”
Tom Casey – First Aid Chair

CHILDREN’S CHARITY CHALLENGE 50/50
Susanna Parkhouse #56786, Chairperson Shep Brown #27510, Chairperson
The Karol Patzer MOA Children’s Charity honors the memory of Karol Patzer, a long time MOA member, who had an idea almost 30 years ago. Karol suggested each year picking a worthy children’s program in the area the National Rally was to be held in and designating it as that year’s Children’s Charity. Her concept was enthusiastically supported.
Many and varied at the programs that have benefitted from Karol’s vision.
Funds are raised in a variety of ways. A club challenge is issued by Wisconsin’s Port Washington BMW club, inviting Midwest area clubs to match it’s initial donation of at least $100.00. The challenge is held in conjunction
with the Wild Goose Run, this year happening on Sunday, April 16th. The challenge is then passed on to all MOA BMW clubs and individuals. At the Rally, 50/50 drawings are held, led by Shep Brown and his merry band of Red Aproned volunteers. Contributions can also be made at various locations around the rally site.
The chosen charity this year is “Caroline’s Promise,” situated in Caroline County, Virginia - the county the rally is being held in. The five promises made to the children are that by working together we can give our young people the resources to succeed in life. This is done by: (1) providing ongoing relationships with caring adults; (2) providing safe places with structured activities during non-school hours; (3) providing a healthy start and future; (4) providing marketable skills through effective education; and,(5) providing opportunities to give back through community service.
Will you participate? Checks can be made out to “BMWMOA” with “Karol’s Charity” in the memo section. Checks or money can be given at the 50/50 – Children’s Charity booth here at the National.
Thank you and ride safe.

MEET THE PIONEERS
By Norm Phoenix #1222
The BMW MOA Pioneers are the 31 people who attended all of the first 10 BMW MOA National Rallies. Some of them helped create those initial Rallies. Some of them were among the association’s founding fathers and were instrumental in its organization. Some merely came and supported the Rallies with their attendance. All were important to those early years.
The entire group of 31 is shown here. The picture was taken at the 10th BMW MOA National Rally in Ohio 1982. There are still 5 Pioneers remaining, and one of them can still say he attended them all. Look around for the folks wearing those distinctive Pioneer shirts. If you’re so inclined, ask them about some of those early Rallies. Any of them will be happy to share their stories with you.

Not only is Norm a “Pioneer,” an MOA member who attended each of the first 10 BMW MOA National Rallies, but he is also the only Pioneer who has ridden to all MOA National Rallies. Of the 31 original MOA Pioneers, the group has now dwindled to seven members, with Norm standing as the only Pioneer with perfect attendance at all 50 BMW MOA National Rallies.
Norm’s love for two-wheeled travel began in 1958. That’s the year Illinois created a law stating a rider only had to be 14 years old and didn’t need a driver’s license to operate a vehicle under five horsepower. With that law, Norm’s first ride was an Allstate Deluxe, a low-cost version of the Cushman Pacemaker. Norm bought his first BMW, a 1970 R 75/5, three years after his college graduation.
Over the years, Norm has owned four BMWs: the 1970 R 75/5, a 1976 R 90S, a 1987 K 100 RS, and his current ride, a 2001 K 1200 RS. After the Slash 5, Norm’s typical buying pattern is to rack up 100,000 miles, then buy a new bike. Norm is currently somewhere between 300,000 and 400,000 BMW miles aboard his BMWs.
Norm joined the Chicago Region BMW Owners Association in 1970 and the BMW MOA in 1972. Over the years, the BMW clubs have provided a reason for his rides, most of which were connected with a local club activity, club, or national rally. Norm has served as president, secretary, treasurer, and director with his Chicago BMW club. Since leaving that board, Norm has been an active member of Chitech, the club’s technical committee, serving four years as its chairman and many as assistant chairman. Norm is also a Pioneer, Charter Life Member, and Ambassador with the MOA.
Additionally, during the ‘70s, he co-authored a series of articles for BMW Owners News called “BMW Electrics.” He has also presented technical seminars at the MOA National Rallies. On top of that, Norm has volunteered on Registration, Tally, and Awards committees and served as the Pioneer Events Committee Chair.
Norm says he enjoys his involvement in his Chicago Club and the BMW MOA today as much as he did when it all began for him in the ‘70s.
When you see Norm at the Rally, be sure to say “Hi” and thank him for his 50 years of continued support for the organization and motorcycle brand we all love.

2023 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY 79
Rally week is finally here. For many of us, this is the culmination of a year of preparation and hard work. It is a labor of love and we’re excited to share it with you, our MOA friends and family. Our reward is seeing wide smiles and laughter at every event and venue at the 50th.
The week will pass by too quickly. When it is over, we will be busy making plans for 2024. For the moment, our small group of employees want to thank every person who attended the 50th National Rally and shared in the celebration with us. You made it special, and we can’t wait to do it again.
On your way home from the 50th, we hope you will ride inspired!
Sincerely,
Team MOA
