Welcome to Springfield Hello and welcome to the 2022 BMW Motorcycle Owners of America National Rally. We’re excited for you to enjoy the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds and the amenities it provides, and thank you for deciding to Wander Farther with us. Most of the activities at the 49th Annual MOA Rally will be centered around our Rally Central, which includes the Beer Garden, Main Stage, Free Coffee, concessions, outdoor vendors and the main vendor building. The Main Vendor Building is where over 80 vendors will be displaying their products or services, and where you’ll find the Vintage Bike display, MOA Gear Store and Rally Welcome Center all in a comfortable air-conditioned space with concessions and information.

4  2022 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the BMW MOA. Since 1972 was also the year BMW offered motorcycles in first-ever new colors including Moza Blue, we’ve decided to restore and give one of those away this year. It’s a beautiful 1972 R 75/5 in Monza Blue, meticulously mechanically and cosmetically restored by Mikey Orloff of Martindale Motorcycle Works. Since the /5 was the bike you could buy new and then ride to the first ever BMW MOA rally or club meeting, we’ve decided to have a Celebration of the Slash Five complete with a proper /5-only bike show, a large group photo, two Seminars about the development of the /5 and a special display of the /5s in the Main Vendor Building. Check the schedule in other parts of this program for details.

For those who want to spend some of their rally wandering farther, Springfield is the Queen City of the Ozarks, and a great place to start a ride on the world-famous Ozark roads. Springfield is also the Birthplace of Route 66, the Mother Road itself, and the home of Bass Pro World Headquarters. It takes a lot of planning and huge effort from member volunteers to bring this all together, and we’d like to take a moment and let our volunteers know how much they mean to us and the rally as a whole. So here is a huge Thank You for all you have done, this cannot happen without you. On behalf of the entire team that puts this rally together, we’d like to invite you to enjoy your time in Springfield, meet old friends, make new ones, and Wander Farther. – Brian, Greg & Pat

Celebration of the Slash 5 Greg Feeler #2241, 2022 BMW MOA National “Wander Farther” Rally Co-Chair A major part of our recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the BMW MOA is with the “Celebration of The Slash 5”. Why the Slash 5 (aka /5) – a model many of you know little about? Well, many reasons, starting with the fact that many may not know why it’s important. Secondly, it was the new BMW bike you would have ridden home the year our club was founded. Even more importantly,

30  2022 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY

the /5 was not just any motorcycle. Many believe its large sales numbers were essential for the long-term success of BMW motorcycles, and lead to massive growth of the BMW motorcycle community and the formation of the BMW MOA. The /5 series was introduced in 1970, and during its four-years of production BMW sold more bikes than in all the prior fifteen years.

Beemerboneyard.com The /5 series sired increasingly successful successor series. The R90S (a /6) introduced in 1974, stood the motorcycle world on its head as the first true superbike, and race modified R90S’s won AMA Superbike races! The iconic R100RS followed, and then the first R80G/S. Further, the thousands of new BMW owners grew local BMW clubs and created more, and the BMW MOA was founded to provide better information and communication among these local clubs, and individual BMW owners. The Celebration of the Slash 5 has several parts. Most obvious is our Grand Prize drawing bike: a beautifully restored 1972 Monza Blue “Toaster” R 75/5 model. See the article elsewhere in this Rally Program about this bike. Secondly, we have invited everyone with a /5 to attend this rally – so don’t be surprised if you see more /5’s running around than you have ever seen before – or likely will again. Next, we are inviting all those /5 riders to join in a group photograph on Friday afternoon – the largest /5 selfie ever! And then, on Saturday morning concurrent and co-located with our traditional People’s Choice Bike Show, will be a special /5 bike show and judging. GRAND PRIZES BMW MOA Second Chances – The Rally Grand Prize Motorcycle Take a trip with me in my Wayback machine to 1972. We land in the parking lot of the local BMW motorcycle dealer, and as we walk in, to our left and right is an array of shiny new Slash 5 BMWs. Going beyond the traditional black, white, and silver there are several exciting new colors this year, and the one that catches your eye is a beautiful Monza Blue R75/5! You run your hands over the perfect paint, along the chrome tank side panels, back across the seat, and inhale the intoxicating perfume of new metal and rubber. Throwing a leg over, you settle down into a slight crouch - feet on the pegs and hands on the bars - and imagine the unobstructed view of endless miles of open highways spooling out before you! Your only problem is how to get that fabulous machine into the Wayback machine and back to 2022. Well, the BMW MOA is giving you a second chance with the opportunity to win the stunning Monza Blue R75/5 Grand Prize Bike here at the 50th Anniversary “Wander Farther” National Rally. You can see it on display in the main Vendor Buildings until it is given away this Saturday night Closing Ceremonies. Meticulously restored by Mikey Orloff of Martindale Motorcycle Works in Redwood, Texas, it’s 1972 all over again! We chose this bike specifically to help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the 1972 founding of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America. See the “Celebration of The Slash 5” article elsewhere in this Rally Program for more about the significance of these amazing motorcycles. There are things we miss out on because of chance and timing. Many of you never had a shot at a new Slash 5, but in the BMW MOA, we believe in second chances, so don’t miss out this time – come to Springfield, celebrate our 50th Anniversary, and win this bike!

GRAND PRIZES BigEar, Inc (Value $1,953) BigEar Custom Triple Speaker Earbuds w/Go Blue Unit For years we have all struggled to hear our communication systems through the wind and outside road noise while escaping life on our motorcycles. We’ve sat in our driveway, installed that system, and boy, did it sound good! Then we went for a ride. Those supposedly new and improved systems did not perform as promised because the wind and road noise rose over 105dB. It was impossible to hear your music or partner over the roar. Big Ear Inc. has a solution for your frustration on the open road. Finally, you can hear your communication system while enjoying your fantastic motorcycle adventures. Choose if you would like to go with Bluetooth or just hard wire into your newer communication system. Plug your cord into your Big Ear earplugs, and go. 2022 KAROL PATZER MOA CHILDREN’S CHARITY CLUB CHALLENGE Susanna Parkhouse #56786, Chairperson The Port Washington (Wisconsin) BMW club, #116, once again challenges all BMW MOA clubs and individuals to meet or beat their initial donation of $100.00 to this year’s Children’s Charity. The Children’s Charity was started by, and is named in memory of, long-time MOA member, Karol Patzer who, before her passing in 2018, created the charity and oversaw it very successfully for twenty-five years. While $100.00 (or more) per club, or individual, would be wonderful, even a dollar per rally attendee would help to make a difference for the children involved The Children’s Charity this year is CARE TO LEARN (caretolearn.org). Won’t you join the generosity of the Port Washington BMW Club in making a difference for this worthy cause? “Each year, almost a million children go to school in the state of Missouri. 19.2% of children in Missouri live in poverty. Students with unmet medical, dental, and mental health concerns are more likely to have developmental delays and cognitive impairment. By the end of fifth grade, low-income students may be 2-1/2 grades behind academically.” It is the vision of “Care to Learn” that every student

have the confidence, self-worth, and resources to maximize their potential and become self-sufficient citizens. During the rally, be on the lookout for the roving 50/50 ticket salespeople wearing their bright red aprons. Shep Brown, Thomas Wentz and their team of volunteers will be on-site selling tickets. There will be two individual drawings on Thursday and Friday and one on Saturday. You’ll have an opportunity to win some “beer money” while helping “Care to Learn.” Also, your donations at the 50/50 booth and other volunteer areas will provide an opportunity to contribute to this worthy cause. We all need to ‘crank the throttle’ for charity. If you, or your club, would like to donate before, during or after the rally, simply write a check payable to the “BMW MOA,” indicating “Karol’s Charity” in the memo area and send it to SUSANNA PARKHOUSE, BMW MOA CHARITY, 1129 West Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80904. Thanks for coming to “Wander Farther.” Thank you for supporting “Care to Learn.”

AWARDS Outstanding Rider Awards By Don Hamblin, Awards Committee Chair One of the high points of the Rally Closing Ceremony is the Outstanding Rider Awards. For all those riders who are interested in competing for one of the Outstanding Rider Awards there are a few things you should know: To make sure that the integrity of each award, and the BMW MOA, is maintained at the highest level we do ask that anyone who believes they could be in contention for one of our awards apply at the Awards Booth in the East Vendor Building. We will have volunteers on hand to assist you in filling out your application, verifying that all your information is correct, and maybe even a fresh cup of gourmet coffee for competing riders. That said, there are a few rules and documents we have to have to validate these awards:

GENERAL With the exception of Youngest Rider Awards, all riders must have come on a BMW motorcycle, and all riders must have a valid Driver License (including a motorcycle endorsement, if applicable). Individual application sheets for each award will be required.

50  2022 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY

MILEAGE AWARDS Long Distance Male Rider, Long Distance Female Rider, and Long Distance Sidecar / Trike. These awards will be based on the Google Maps distance from the address on your Driver License to the Rally Site. Our volunteers will allow you to verify that distance when taking your application. You can also check this distance at home before you leave so that you will know where you stand before leaving your driveway!

AGE AWARDS Oldest Male Rider, Oldest Female Rider, Oldest Passenger, and Youngest Rider. Age awards will be based on the birthdate listed on their driver license, calculated at the ending of the rally. Youngest Saddle Passenger and Youngest Sidecar Passenger will be based on the birthdate listed on their Birth Certificate, Passport, Certificate of Baptism, or other official document approved by the Awards Committee Chair.

TOURING AWARDS

Both the Grand Tour and World Tour Awards take a bit more to validate. These awards are for those riders who take a round about or touring route to the rally, but do not return to their home any time during their ride. To validate that you did not return to your home you will need to provide one of the following: a trip log with back up receipts for fuel, lodging, traffic citations, etc.; A GPS Track; FaceBook Checkins; or other documentation that is approved by the Awards Committee Chair.

LARGEST TRADITIONAL CHARTERED CLUB AT THE RALLY

We will ask that a representative of the Chartered Club present a “sign in sheet” of all the clubs members-in-good-standing to the Awards Committee Chair. The club with the most members present will get the award.

LARGEST VIRTUAL CLUB AT THE RALLY Virtual Clubs are those clubs that exist primarily on the internet and rarely have official organized / scheduled meetings. Examples are: Airheads, Chromeheads, Internet BMW Motorcycle Riders, et., al. Again, we ask that a representative of the club present a “sign in sheet” of all the club members at the rally.

SPECIAL AWARDS

From time to time an individual, couple, of even unique motorcycle come to the attention of the Awards Committee. In those cases, after the approval of the Awards Committee Chair, a “Special Award” may be given out. Please note that any time there is a question about these rules or their application the decision of the Awards Committee Chair will be final. Awards will be presented on the stage in the East Vendor building at noon on Saturday. But one of the most exciting things at any rally are those unique stories told by the riders. So if you would like to hear those stories first hand (and with documentation that they are in fact true), drop by the Awards Booth and sign up for a volunteer shift – you will not be disappointed!

OLDEST BMW RIDDEN TO THE RALLY

For this award we will use the date listed on the motorcycle’s Official Title, Registration, Bill of Sale, or Dealer Invoice. 2022 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY

HIGH ENERGY, BOOT STOMPIN' BANDS TAKE THE STAGE! By Lee Harrelson Rally Entertainment Chair

Once we open the Rally gates on Thursday, the party is ON! So, get in, get settled, check out the huge number of seminars and vendors and don’t forget to stop at Rally Central and the MOA Gear Store. Then, find your old friends, start making new ones, and get ready for three nights of electrifying entertainment!

Thursday On Thursday night, we’ll feature the band Strawbilly, sure to provide a Honky-Tonkin’, Cowpunkin’ psychobilly rip-roarin’ All American good time! Strawbilly is a five-piece band from Kansas City that has one boot planted firmly in its traditional roots and one boot kicking its way through modern pop country; Strawbilly is leaving other lesser bands in its wake.

Friday Friday night starts off with an MOA Rally favorite! If you attended the 2017 Rally in Salt Lake City, you might have caught Big Sandy and his Fly Rite Boys. They gave us such a rocking good time out in Utah, we asked them to travel all the way to Springfield to party with us again.

MUSIC SCHEDULE 52  2022 BMW MOA NATIONAL RALLY

Over the last three decades, Big Sandy and his Fly Rite Boys have kept up a constant cycle of traveling back and forth across the lower 48, then hopping across the pond to Europe and beyond. They bring with them a brand of American music that has earned them an induction into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, several national television appearances, guest spots on The Grand Ole Opry, and a slew of adoring fans. “I truly love being out on the road, and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to sing my songs all over the world,” said Sandy. “But when I’m away from the U.S. for too long, it’s like I need a recharge, like I need a solid dose of everything Americana. Give me a Chuck Berry song while rolling down the interstate or a truck stop conversation with a waitress who once danced with Lefty Frizzell,

and I’m good for another three thousand miles.” Friday’s headliner is The Reverend Horton Heat. Seeing Reverend Horton Heat live is a transformative experience. Flames come off the guitars. Heat singes your skin. There’s nothing like the primal tribal rock and roll transfiguration of a Reverend Horton Heat show. Jim Heath becomes a slicked-back 1950ʹs rock & roll shaman channeling Screamin’ Jay Hawkins through Buddy Holly, while Jimbo incinerates the stand-up bass. Then there are the Heatettes, those foxy rockabilly chicks dressed in poodle-skirts and cowboy boots slamming the night away. Listening to the Reverend Horton Heat is tantamount to injecting pure musical nitrous into the hot-rod engine of your heart. No band on this or any other, planet rocks harder, drives faster or lives truer than the Reverend Horton Heat. These itinerant preachers actually practice what they preach. They live their lives by the Gospel of Rock and Roll.

Saturday From the high-octane, spaghetti western Wall of Sound in “Big Sky,” to the dark driving frenetic paranoia of “400 Bucks” to the brain-melting Western Psychedelic Garage purity of “Psychobilly,” Saturday night features a big bang closing by Chuck Mead and his Grassy Knoll Boys. After landing on Nashville’s Lower Broadway in the 1990’s, Chuck Mead co-founded the famed Alternative Country quintet BR549. The band’s seven albums, three Grammy nominations and CMA Award for Best Overseas Touring Act built an indelible bridge between authentic American Roots music and millions of fans worldwide. With the band on hiatus, in 2006, Mead took on the role of Music Director for Million Dollar Quartet, a show that became a Broadway smash and has enjoyed extremely successful runs in Seattle, London, Chicago and an upcoming residency at Harrah’s in Las Vegas. By 2009, Mead’s work as a solo artist was at the forefront of his career and culminated with the release of critically acclaimed solo debut, Journeyman’s Wager. Back at the Quonset Hut was recorded at Nashville’s legendary Quonset Hut Studio where Patsy Cline, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Roger Miller, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash and others cut some of Country music’s greatest tracks. Released in 2012, the album of classic covers features surviving members of Music Row’s original “A Team” studio

musicians as well as guest appearances by Old Crow Medicine Show, Elizabeth Cook, Jamie Johnson and Bobby Bare. The project has continued to garner critical acclaim from Country, Americana and Alt-Country media who regard his performance as a delightful homage to early Country music. Also by Chuck Meade, Free State Serenade, his debut for Plowboy Records, currently sits near the top of the Americana Radio Chart. Chuck Mead has performed with his Grassy Knoll Boys across the nation and the world. Recently sharing the stage with Old Crow Medicine Show, The Avett Brothers and the legendary Loretta Lynn, among others, he continues to be a favored performer among an eclectic variety of venue, festival and entertainment buyers. The Saturday night show features an upbeat set for anyone who loves that special blend of traditional Country, rhythmic Western Swing and high energy Rockabilly. (As you are moving around the rally site you may see someone in a golf cart riding around like a madman. That would most likely be your Rally Chair Brian Burdette. Stop him, shake his hand and tell him THANK YOU for putting on a party for all of us!)

VINTAGE BMW DISPLAY By Lee Deyoung #31683, Vintage Display Chair

This year the MOA will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and the Vintage display will be celebrating along with it. As the MOA has evolved through the years, so has the display. Fewer vintage bikes are ridden to the rally, and more are taking up space in the garage collecting dust. Well, it is time to dust them off, bring them to the rally, and show them off. Ridden or trailered we are expecting a great turn out. Enthusiasts will be amazed at the site of antique and classic models, museum restorations and daily riders ranging from the 1920’s through the mid 1970’s. There will be pre- and post-war singles and twins, such as a 1937 R17 twin, which was the highest HP BMW made pre-war at 33 HP. You will see Post-war models such as

R50US and R60US, along with /5’s toasters, /6’s, R90’s with orange and smoked grey tanks, and bikes with special and unique sidecars. All will highlight the evolution of BMW design, engineering, and the current state of technology when they were made. The variety of bikes on display include those which have been lovingly and painstakingly restored, and others carefully and mindfully preserved as original, each representing an important part of the BMW motorcycle story. Vintage owners and restorers Lee Deyoung, and Jack Wells will lead a seminar on Friday morning “Restoration and Preservation of Vintage BMWs.” Check the rally schedule for location. The presenters have personally restored and ridden antique and classic BMWs and are experts in their fields. They will discuss mechanics, electrics, paint, storage, insurance, and the history of these machines. How-to’s and resources will highlight the seminar along with discussion and a Q & A. Participation is encouraged and is a wonderful opportunity for those who have or are in

process of restoring a vintage bike, or contemplating doing so, to meet, network and share information. The exhibited bikes can be judged (which is strictly optional) Saturday morning starting at 9:00 AM. Judging is based on factory originality (with some exceptions such as period accessories, racers, and sidecar rigs) and the AMCA philosophy where each bike is assessed on its own merits beginning at 100 points. The Awards Ceremony will take place Saturday, 1:30 PM, at the display site. Bikes rated over 95 will receive an Award of Excellence. Two special memorial awards will be presented: The Vern Mitchell Trophy to the enthusiast who accurately and beautifully restored a pre-1977 bike on his or her own, and The Jim Falk Award to the visionary who actively promotes the restoration and preservation of vintage BMWs. At the end of the ceremony, there will be a raffle for owners who entered their BMW in the Vintage display. The Vintage Display defines the historic importance of BMWs as bikes to be studied, treasured, and enjoyed. Collectors, restorers, and enthusiasts are invited and encouraged to exhibit their vintage machines. All Rally participants are welcome to visit the exhibit for a journey through BMW motorcycles’ traditions and history.

WIN TWO AIRHEADS IN FOUNDATION “SPEED RAFFLE” Visit the Foundation booth in the West Exhibit Hall for your shot to win two vintage airheads. The BMW MOA Foundation will be giving away two classic BMWs at the Wander Farther National Rally - the first is a 1973 R 75/5 in Granada Red and the second a 1974 R 90/6 in Polizei White. Both motorcycles were beautifully restored by notorious builder and MOA member John “Dutch” Lammers. Deemed a “speed raffle,” the first drawing will take place once 3,000 tickets are sold. The first winner will have their choice of either bike, leaving the second to be awarded during a drawing at the closing of the Rally. The second drawing will include every ticket sold, giving early ticket buyers two chances to win! Tickets will be on sale for three days of the Rally, June 16-18, 2022, at the BMW MOA Foundation booth and online. All MOA members are eligible to enter. Tickets are $25 each or five tickets for $100. Stop by the Foundation booth for details and to purchase tickets!

Thank You MOA Founders, On a cold February day in 1972 five BMW motorcycle enthusiasts founded the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America. Without their foresight, courage, and determination this club would not exist, and you wouldn’t be reading this 50th Anniversary Rally Program for a rally which never happened. There is no way to measure the boundless joy and happiness their act has given the BMW motorcycling community because of this great organization. Dozens of National Rallies, hundreds of regional events, thousands of life-long friendships, and millions and millions of BMW motorcycle miles – and smiles. Thank you Vern Hansen, Jeff Dean, John Moore, Charlie Smith, and Frank Diederich. Not many people can say they planted the seed for such a great tree. All the thousands and thousands of BMW MOA members who have benefited from your act over the last 50 years, and the ones to come, owe you far more than they can ever pay.

Above, Vern Hansen, (left) founder and first president of the Touring Club of Detroit along with Jeff Dean, John Moore, Charlie Smith and Frank Diederich–the five founders of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America.

RALLY HISTORY Meet the BMW MOA Pioneers By Norm Phoenix #1222 The BMW MOA Pioneers are the 31 people who attended all of the first 10 BMW MOA National Rallies. Some of them helped create those initial Rallies. Some of them were among the association’s founding fathers and were instrumental in its organization. Some merely came and supported the Rallies with their attendance. All were important to those early years. The entire group of 31 is shown here. The picture was taken at the 10th BMW MOA National Rally in Ohio. There are still 7 Pioneers remaining, and one of them can still say he attended them all. Look around for the folks wearing those distinctive Pioneer shirts. If you’re so inclined, ask them about some of those early Rallies. Any of them will be happy to share their stories with you. First things first. Register for the rally or check-in if you registered online before the rally. If you are camping, proceed to the designated camping area and pick a spot to pitch your tent. Meet your neighbors, make new friends and relax. Once you’ve settled in, visit the Rally Welcome Center inside the exhibitor area to turn in your door prize tickets, pick up your pin and rally mug and sign up at the Awards Booth…you never know what you may win! First time at an MOA National Rally? We’re glad you’re here! Be sure to stop in and introduce yourself at the Ambassador’s Booth. Need to charge your electronic devices? We’ve got you covered at the Electronics Charging Station. Be sure to bring your own cord. Check out the MOA Gear Shop for Rally shirts and other cool MOA items. Visit the MOA Foundation Booth to learn more about rider safety, education and training.

How Can I Volunteer To Help Out? Lots of work happens before the Rally even opens. Use the contact form on the Volunteers MOA web page to inquire about current needs. At the rally, the Volunteer Booth is located in the MOA building and you can sign up to volunteer there. Stop by and sign up for a shift or two. NOTHING would happen without our fantastic volunteers!

Picking Up Items At The Rally Receiving will be located at the west end of the west Vendor Building. Receiving pre-rally hours will approximately from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Rally hours Thursday and Friday will be the same as the Vendor Building: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Thursday and Friday, and 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM Saturday.
