JANUARY 2017

Minutes of the January 21, 2016 Business Meeting BMW Riders of Western Colorado Inc. The meeting was called to order by President Monte Potter at 10:00. There were eight members present. Officer’s reports; Treasurer Orrin Beckner presented an annual summary of last year’s income and expenses. The club ended the year with a balance of $4918.78. The final rally tally shows a net income of $932.24 to the club. Secretary Jeff Smith reported on nine renewing members and passed the checks to Orrin. Jeff submitted a bill for newsletters and $96.00 paid to renew the club website. Jeff also submitted the club charter renewal with the BMW Riders Association. Orrin added a check for $15 and will mail the application. Vice President Dwayne Hall spoke about rides he and Brad are planning for the riding season. One idea is a picture ride. The club gives members a picture of a recognizable feature within a 100 mile radius. Riders riding to the spot and documenting their visit with a picture will win a Snickers bar. Orrin, Margaret and Joe Branson are planning a trip to 3 Step Hideaway a motorcycle friendly campground near LaSal Utah around the end of April or early May. Camping is available for $22 per night and RV’s, and tents are welcome. They also offer some other accommodations, information; http://www.3stephideaway.com/index.php Saturday morning breakfasts and a ride were discussed with general agreement we should add these to our activity schedule. Berna B’s was mentioned as a likely meeting spot. Bill from Grand Junction BMW/KTM parts will be selling bikes starting February 1 while Dylan who has been in sales is moving to parts. Bill also asked if the club would allow Grand Junction BMW/KTM to be a presence at our rally. Bill described a booth with bikes and maybe demo rides. The group generally agreed and details will be worked out as the event approaches. New Business;Gary Campbell sent Jeff the rides he mapped out for last year’s rally and Jeff will get the descriptions and maps posted on our website. Orrin Beckner, a member of the American Motorcyclist Association, brought several onerous issues to the club’s attention. Orrin spoke about two issues, the RPM act that would allow competition only vehicles to remain legal under the clean air act and a 100% tariff on the importation of European motorcycles less than 500cc. The tariff is pushed by the beef industry in a 20 year old dispute about beef hormones. The AMA says “Push back against proposal for higher import fees on certain motorcycles Urge your federal lawmakers to oppose the Office of United States Trade Representative’s proposal to include 100 percent tariffs on motorcycles imported from the European Union with an engine size between 51cc and 500cc in the E.U. – U.S. beef hormone trade dispute.” More information here; https://cqrcengage.com/amacycle/Federal Jeff will investigate club hats to include an embroidered colored club emblem. The meeting was adjourned at 11:05. Respectfully submitted; Jeff Smith Secretary/Editor Owl Creek Pass Big GS Friendly 186 Miles..144 Paved & 42 Good Gravel Owl Creek passes through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery found anywhere in Colorado and was used in filming John Wayne’s True Grit. The large Aspen groves are very colorful this time of the year. Head towards Blue Mesa Dam on 92, 53-miles.. Turn West on US50 for 16.3 miles. Take a left at the Forest Service sign pointing to Silver Jack Reservoir. Do not take the Forest Service Road pointing to Little Cimmaron, The right road is 1 miles farther west. The right road is FR 858, going to Silver Jack Resevoir. It’s about 42-miles across Owl Creek Pass on a good gravel Road. We like to go turn South at 550 and go into Ridgeway for lunch, There are several good restaurants in the old town of Ridgeway. From here it’s 70 miles back to Hotchkiss via Montrose and Delta.
