A five day loop around the four corners

Motorcycle camping is an acquired taste. My ski buddy Jim and I have done several trips around the West. This time I wanted to ride US Highway 191 North from Clifton Arizona. Highway 191 is mentioned by Andy Goldfine in his book “Lightweight Unsupported Motorcycle Travel for Terminal Cases”, as one of the “good” roads, as is Highway 141. To get there, Jim and I left Telluride and rode South to Bluewater State Park about 260 miles away. There are two sides to Bluewater State Park, get off I-40 at Prewitt for more comfortable camping. Ask me how I know this. We continued South the next morning across Western New Mexico past the Bisti Wilderness and the Gila Mountains and then descended 5000 feet into Clifton Arizona on AZ78, about 280 miles from Bluewater SP. We camped at the Clifton RV park, a town facility, and discovered that the campground maintenance was performed by County Jail inmates all dressed in blaze orange jumpsuits. We left them to their work and headed up 191. The first climb out of Clifton reveals the second largest copper mine in the US. The road switchbacks crazily upward crossing sections of the mine road and passing by a boneyard of gigantic truck beds. A sign warns vehicles over 30 feet to turn around and then the climb steepens and the switchbacks tighten until a twisty road sign warns 10 mph curves next 11 miles. The road continues climbing and sleet turned to wet snow around 8500 feet. Finally the great curves, some say 2200 in the 122 miles to Springerville come to an end and we stop at Subway for lunch. After lunch we continued west to Payson in intermittent rain, and camped, a 270 mile day. The morning in Payson was cool but the sun warmed the day quickly and we headed north to Flagstaff on Lake Mary road passing Mormon Lake and continuing northwest on 89 to camp at Gouldings campground in Monument Valley another 280 mile day. Gouldings has a pool and a beautiful view. The last day dawns sunny and warmer and we head towards Bluff, Monticello and Highway 141. Jim towards Telluride and me to Grand Junction a 280 mile day. This route included five days of riding, four nights camping, Three campfires and 1500 miles, (from Grand Junction), of great empty roads, what is not to like? It’s our backyard!

Information: Gary Campbell 970-210-2604, gcampbell44@yahoo.com or register online at: May; Surprise snowstorms all around Grand Junction! Spring is here. But, roads are showing the effects of winter, huge potholes and ruts in the pavement are common in the area. Gravel is littering the corners and road edges. Rocks are being thrown by passing vehicles and drivers are texting more. Driving impaired and single vehicle accidents lead the causes, so be careful out there! Road construction season is starting so watch out in the Cone Zones. Look for mag chloride, gravel, ROCKS, and ICE. Check for weather, construction delays and closures on state websites. Colorado road conditions are available at www.cotrip.org . Other nearby States can be checked while planning a trip to minimize delays and torn up roads. Utah construction can be checked at www.dot.state.ut.org/construction , New Mexico at www.nmshtd.state.nm.us and Wyoming at http://wyoroad.info/ Stay safe out there!
