MODEL FEATURED: THE

SCORE

He has a natural ability to create, adapt, and push tricks and ideas beyond comprehension. Look at the sequence in the following pages of his signature trick, the no-hand 360 flip. How does one even envision that, let alone make it become reality? It’s called desire. It’s called determination. It’s called focus.

DAVE MIRRA

Back in the day, it was widely known that Dave could show up at a contest without even touching his bike for the previous two weeks...and still win the comp.

FOCU

American Heritage Dictionary defines the word Legend as: “One that inspires legends or achieves legendary fame”. Dave Mirra is one athlete who has done both. Competing in Action Sports is inherently dangerous and everchanging. The amazing thing is that Dave has been competing and winning for 15 years and to this day has the ability to win any contest he decides to enter.

7 QUESTIONS... >>> You are one of the few riders in BMX who has remained relevant and competitive for 15 years. What makes you different that allows you to compete with today’s new school riders? Riding is all about progression. if I can’t go out today and get better than I was yesterday then I would lose interest real fast. Over the years the style of riding has changed, the way the younger guys ride is different, my secret is, “don’t be afraid to change” and I’m not too good to learn from others. >>> With places like Woodward, riders seem to have it much easier then the era before them. Does the invention of the resi ramp and foam pit, allowing riders to learn much quicker, piss you off or do you see it as a good thing for the progression of the sport? You know, I am very happy where I came from and how I figured out a way to survive in bmx through the up and downs. However, the invention of the resi and foam has skyrocketed ways to progess. I really love it for myself and for the sport. With TV Involved in our sport, riders need to separate contests from normal everyday riding. Televised contests are a show and I really believe to protect all levels of the sport and make it better for everyone across the board we need to use all the tools we have to put on the best show. So, the foam and resi is a blessing to all the riders that have chosen to keep an open mind and step it up..... >>> You have been one of the few X-stars to attract national non-endemic sponsors such as Oxy, SlimJim, Monster, etc... What makes you so attractive to these sponsors? Good question!!! LOL. That is tough for me to answer this one. Maybe the right place, right time. In the beginning when ESPN became involved I stayed positive and took it serious despite what we thought ESPN’s motive was.

The best is the attention and the appreciation fans give you for your hard work. The worst is knowing how much you love riding, the heart it takes to dedicate your life for something with no guarantees and there are sideliners that still try to break you. >>> It seems that you have decided to concentrate on park these days. Will you ever compete in vert again? Have you ever considered riding in a dirt comp?

>>> You and your wife Lauren have a baby girl and another baby on the way. How has becoming a father changed your life?

For years I’ve competed in both vert and park, at this point in my career I’ve dedided to focus on park to compete to the fullest. Will I compete in vert again? At this point, no, but you never know. Dirt? Maybe , it looks like a lot of fun....

It has changed my life in a great way. Things are more structured and structure works a lot better in this lifestyle. I have enjoyed riding my bike more this year than I have in a long time. I feel like a kid again.

>>> When you do decide to call it a career, other than running Mirraco, what do you see in your future? Do you want to play professional golf, race cars, go fishing?

>>> You’ve been competing for a long time. What is the best part about your life in the spotlight and what is the worst?

It would be amazing to race cars, that’s a rush. I could see fishing but what tops the list is raising a family. MIRRACOMANUAL

YOU CAN’T MAKE A FREESTYLE BIKE OUT OF ALUMINUM!!!

DAVE’S PROJECT

But, how do you build a steel bike under 20lbs? easy answer: you don’t

BMX has been around for a long time. The trends come and go. Neon bikes to black bikes. Front brakes to no brakes. Heavy bikes to the new trend of ultralight bikes.

The solution: Aluminum.

Dave’s logic was simple. If he weighs 165lbs and is riding a bike that weighs 25lbs, a kid who weighs 100lbs would have to work almost twice as hard to flow a 25lb bike. Although his math sucked, his logic was spot on and so Dave’s “Project” was born.

Although long thought as tabboo in the freestyle world, the strengthening process of aluminum has come a long way. In some tests, aluminum even tests stronger than steel and the weight savings can be substantial. That said, we present, the “Project” Series by Mirraco. These aren’t cheap and they’re not for adults. They are the perfect bike to even the playing field to younger, lighter weight riders.

The streets of San Francisco offer some of the best pure street structures around including banks, ledges, walls, and rideable public art everywhere you look; a concrete paradise made for BMX. Unfortunately, it seems that the city spent as much money “skateproofing as it did constructing. Still, there is plenty to ride if you just look around. Recently Nigel Sylvester, Dave Rytell and Rob Wise did just that during a visit to the city with the big red bridge. Although awesome for bikes, not so much for cars would be a good description of downtown SF. Parking overnight at your hotel at the cost of $49 is totally reasonable. So take your bike, leave your car, and enjoy the ride.

The Life

f Ryan

Guettler

Story by Paul Roberts. Captions by RG.

It’s funny, knowing BMX and hitting up a lot of the comps means that I’ve normally seen or met the good kids as they’re coming up, sometimes years before they started winning TV contests and becoming known as favorites. With Ryan I got the same introduction as pretty much every kid in America. The Global X Games was an event run by ESPN, very similar to X but with countries going up against each other as well as the Athletes still going for personal medals. With similar TV programming to X, it was possible to be sat at home and watch the comp unfold in the pleasure of your own living room. In Park, representing Australia, was a young Ryan Guettler. Dave Mirra was on fire and took the win doing tricks that are still rare even now and his US teammate Ryan Nyquist backed him up getting the Silver. Even so, it was Guettler that had me jumping up off of the couch and even now I still think his riding that day deserved an even better medal than the Bronze he took home.

The hardware. Dew Tour cups 2005

As the next couple of years rolled on I got to spend time around Ryan. Its’ funny how you can feel affinity with someone born on the opposite side of the World but whether it be the shared experience of upping sticks and moving to the States, or the common love of riding I don’t know, I couldn’t MIRRACOMANUAL

The poker room. There’s been some big games in there. One big night was when me, DMC, Mirra, Harrington, Darden, and Gator were playing and at one point we counted over $6000 in the Pot. The room is getting better with slots and a stand up Ms Pacman.

help but like him. He was chill to be around, super into riding and not ashamed of his desire to ride the big comps. By the time 2005 rolled round and Ryan’s Dew Tour dominance played out in front of millions I already considered Gute a Mate. It was so good to see him get the pay off for all his hard work and it’ll be interesting to see how long it takes for anyone to win two Dew Cups in the same Tour. The kid from Beenleigh, Australia put his name in the history books and made himself quite a few fans along he way. Watching Guettler’s rise to prominence has been a bit like watching a movie but a good part of the storyline that not everyone picks up on is that he still is the kid from Beenleigh. Yes, there is a lot of money coming in and there are now new stresses and commitments but he’s still the kid who loves riding and wants to throw down at the big comps. The only difference now is that he’s gone from wanting to be one of the best riders in the World to having to deal with being one of the best riders in the World. From being on the inside, I can tell you he’s not doing a bad job. It’s a tough job getting to the top and an even harder task to stay there but Guettler’s hunger hasn’t diminished and the success hasn’t gone to his head. Yes, he lives in an amazing house, yes

More cars...

Everyone loves Scarface, me too.

I’m into classic cars. I bought this off of Tj lavin. It’s a ‘64 Lincoln and I also have custom chopper and a ‘64 Cadillac.

This is a 1st place Mat Hoffman CFB guitar I got in ‘06. Thought it was cool and put it on the wall near the front door.

This is the hall of fame going up to the poker room and I thought it would be cool to frame pics of my mates that have shots in mags and hang them up.

I’m getting really into taking photos so this is my office. I spend the least amount of time in here but I’m slowly getting into Photoshop. I’ll read about it on a plane to a comp get home and be pumped to sit in here and work a bit on photos. I just started working for BMXpress mag in Australia so maybe soon you will see some photos I take.

This is my bedroom. I’m trying to make it look like a bike shop and hang up my sponsers stuff instead of hiding it in a closet. I’m slowly buying frames to hang around the celling were it’s black. So far I have a sweet DK s.o.b signed by Winkleman, a few FBM’s an old Hoffman, Nate T1, Ruben, which is twisted. I’m always looking on ebay.

he drives a nice car and he’s living the dream but I still think the haters would be disappointed. Before the 2003 Global X games I hadn’t even heard a whisper of a rumor about Ryan Guettler, these days I hear exaggerated stories all the time. They make me smile because they normally come out of the mouths of people who’ve never even met Ryan, let alone known him for a while. It’s funny, most of the time Gute’s rumored to be out doing this and signing that, he’s probably at Dave’s warehouse having a good time, riding and thinking about the next big comp. As a friend watching Ryan’s rise is pleasing but the fact that the success hasn’t ruined him is the best part and as a fan. How can you not love Ryan Guettler? This is a cupboard full of Monster. Part of my deal is getting 10 cases of Monster a month and between me and my mates, we will still have a hard time drinking all of it. I myself drink about 3 a day, I love it.

• FULL NAME: Michael Spinner • AGE:19 • HOMETOWN: Miami Florida • YEARS RIDING: All my life but riding ramps about 7 years

Who the heck is?

MIKE SPINN

• FAVORITE TYPE OF RIDING: Ramps and street !!! • CURRENT RIDE: Mirraco BLACK PEARL with a sick paint job

Mike, you kind of became an overnight success qualifying first in Park pro in your very first comp. You have been picking up new sponsors like crazy including Monster energy, Nike 6.0, Ballpark Franks and Bell helmets. Do you feel any added pressure to perform with so many big companies jumping on board to support you? It’s crazy how all this has happened to me so fast,Im not going to lie there is pressure added to me since I got more sponsors but Its pressure I put on myself. I just want to prove to all my sponsors that I am super stoked that they made a good choice. These days you are living and training at Woodward East. Describe your typical day at Woodward. How cool is that place? Woodward Camp is the best place to ride in the world, it’s great in the summer with all the kids every week just so psyched to be here. And other then just riding it has a bunch of activities to do so we are always having a great time here. What do you say to those who throw salt because the new school riders use foam pits and resi ramps to learn/perfect tricks? HA HA HA, sometimes I hear people talk down on foam pits and resi ramps. I am not sure why though. I luv to ride my bike all the time and push myself. With foam pits we get to do tricks that were just dreams before. You can be described as one of the “young guns” who is shaping the future of the sport with your riding style which seems to be more about technical tricks (and spins) than boost. That said, which trick wins: 1080 or no hand 360 backflip? I respect all types of riding but I do have my own style which includes Spins, whips and Tech tricks and thats what i’m in to. As far as what’s better a 1080 or a nohanded 360 backflip, only Mirra and I have done those tricks and they are BOTH SICK!!! In a very short amount of time, you traveled to a lot of cool places. What is the coolest place you have visited so far and why? New Zealand. Dave and I went there and when we got there the next day the organizers of the contest (X-air) took us to this wild spot where we were in helicoptors, drove with professional drivers on a track and did some skeet shooting, then Dave won the contest I got second and got to pull my 1080 (best trip ever). If you didn’t ride a bike, what would Mike Spinner be doing? I would be on my second year of college doing what everybody else is doing, but I am now living life and having a great time doing it.

Camp

Trying to sum up the impact Woodward has had on BMX is a monumental task. Everyone from beginning BMXers to top pros have fantasized about spending time at Camp, and the list of counselors and visiting pros from over the years reads like a who’s-who list of the BMX elite. But what is it that makes Woodward (East specifically) so special? Everyone you ask will give a different answer, but here are a few things to think about. • It’s in the middle of nowhere, which means everyone who makes the trek to Central Pennsylvania is dedicated to the cause. There are very few “casual” riders at Camp. Those who bring a bike to Woodward live, breathe, and eat BMX. • Woodward has more ramps to choose from than any place on Earth. Indoors, outdoors, huge ramps, small ramps, banks—you name it and Woodward has it. In fact, they probably have three of everything you can imagine (and plenty of things you’ve never even dreamed of). • Woodward East was home to the original foam pit and resi box jump, followed shortly by a vert foam pit and vert resi-the brainchild of Dave Mirra. Once riders were able to try tricks into the foam to get familiar with the motions, jumping and vert progression went into high gear. The ramps at Woodward are always progressing, and having a computerized playback system that lets you watch the trick you just tried in slow motion after each attempt is incredible. • Woodward owners Ed Isabel and Gary Ream have been instrumental in helping to further the BMX cause. They are working with the Olympic committee and countless other initiatives to help BMX riders move forward.

MIRRACOMANUAL

• Everywhere you look at Camp there are other kids who think like you. Some may be on skateboards, inline skates, or they might be part of the gymnastics program, but they all have a similar mentality: Do your own thing and have as much fun as possible in the process. So those are just a few of the things that make Woodward special, and everyone who has visited Camp is bound to think of something else. If you haven’t been to Camp before, hit up the Woodward website to learn more about it. You will see a sample schedule to give you an idea of what goes on at Camp on a daily basis. here’s the link: www.WoodwardCamp.com.

Before You Head to Woodward… When you’re getting ready to leave for your Woodward, here are a few tips to make your trip as fun as possible. Fix your bike. Yeah, we know your bike works, but spend 20 minutes to make sure it’s dialed in and that your brake cables are not about to snap. You don’t want to be watching everyone else ride while you’re working on your bike all the time.

2

Pack some extra parts. There is a bike shop at Woodward to help you out if you something goes wrong, but you’re better off bringing a few extra cables, tubes, tires, or anything else you think might go downhill while you’re there.

3

Pack some extra clothes. Mom’s not going to be around to do your laundry, so be prepared. In the summer you will sweat through shirts like crazy—shoes, too. And do your cabinmates a favor by washing your pads before your trip as well. Open your mind. You may think of yourself as only one type of rider, but with everything Woodward has to offer, try it all. There are dirt jumps there anyone can handle, vert ramps that are a blast to carve around, wedges, rails, and so much more. The last thing you want to do is to be sitting at home three weeks after Camp thinking, “I wish I would have tried…”

“People like to ride or wear what they want. I’m not going to say that they are any different than I am. If you think about it why does it really matter? Let the kids be happy.” FULL NAME: David Mark Rytell AGE: 21 years of age HOMETOWN: Orlando, Florida YEARS RIDING: 9 years on my bike FAVORITE TYPE OF RIDING: street, dirt, park CURRENT RIDE: Mirraco Fivestar! FAVORITE TRICK: anything on the front wheel

“Dude will 360 off anything”...

Q: What inspires you in life when you’re not riding? A: Things that inspire me in life are my friends, family and just being surrounded by great people. Q: People don’t really see you at comps. Are you into contests or do you concentrate more on getting photos and filming for videos? A: Yeah I am into contests but I would much rather be filming and taking photos...you know having fun on my bike instead of being stressed out on my bike Q: Whats one thing that people don’t know about Dave Rytell? A: I like to paint. Q: What are you trying to accomplish with riding? A: Just to make the best out of whatever my bike brings to me.

Q: You went a different route getting a bike sponsor. You ended up winning Local Exposure, what would you tell a kid that’s trying to get sponsored? A: Really I would just tell them to have fun and to love what they do. Q: You have been doing a lot of traveling this past year. What city and spot would you love to go back to? A: Well I recently got back from San Francisco. That city is amazing I would love to go back there! but really I would love to go back to any of the places I have been. Seeing a different way of living is amazing. Q: What direction would you like to see BMX go in the next couple years? A: I have been thinking about this every day. And I think that everyone in bmx has their own way to go you just find it and make it your way.The future is whatever you want to make it. BMX will be around forever no matter what. Q: What’s a typical day for you? What are some things you get into in a 24 hour period? A: Really every day is about the same for me. Wake up, eat some food and go ride with my friends. The only thing that really changes is what we will ride that day or, if its raining, we will chill at my house. Night time I might go out downtown to chill at the bar with some friends once in a while. but most of the time chill at home or go ride UCF. Q: What’s a trend in BMX that you wish would go away and stay gone? A: Um I don’t really have one. People like to ride or wear what they want. I’m not going to say that they are any different than I am. If you think about it why does it really matter? Let the kids be happy. Q: What would you be doing if your life didn’t have a bike in it? A: I don’t really have a say on this one either. I have no idea what I would be doing if there was no bike but knowing me it would be something else than living like the normal American.
