Then one day some older guys were watching me ride their dirt jumps up the road from my house. They asked me about racing BMX, and at that time Iβd never heard of BMX racing. A couple of the older guys came to my house to talk to my parents about it. Then a week later, I was racing my first race..... I was hooked. ONCE YOU FINISH CONTESTS, WOULD YOU CONSIDER RUNNING A STRAIGHT CABLE I had a straight cable of years before I learned barspins and tailwhips. As long as Iβm still doing those tricks after contests, then the answer is no. Function before fashion in this case. I KNOW YOU HAVE SOME PRETTY BIG NEWS .......yes... Full Name Nigel Sylvester Age 20 Hometown Queens, New York Years Riding 8 Frame Model Mirraco Chocolate How did you get into BMX? I began riding with friends around my neighborhood. You ride in NYC, who is your crew? Who do you roll with? Yeah I live in Brooklyn now, and I ride with other kids in the city and my squad but itβs too many to name. Big tricks or big style, which is more important? I think having a good balance of the two is dope. Favorite spots to ride? I like riding spots that you can just session anytime and have fun. Favorite tricks? Wheelies are dope! Goals in Life: whatβs your game plan? My game plan for life is to ride or die. Feel meeee Tell us about your new venture? Well my latest venture is Format, Format is a boutique in queens, New York that I own. Itβs something I wanted to do for a while now so Iβm super siked
that Format is finally up and running. We carry BMX, clothing, sneakers and an array of other goodies. You can check us out if youβre ever in queens or on the internet at Formatny.com. Can you break dance? nah I canβt break dance but I got a mean 2 step. In a TV driven market, it seems like street riders get the respect from their peers but not necessarily from the big sponsors i.e. $$$. Does it bother you that street riders get just as hurt and take just as much risk but donβt always get the same rewards as the big TV contest riders? I feel itβs been the industry has been that way for a while now, big companies just havenβt been exposed to the street riding side of the market. I believe in life if youβre trying to advance yourself to a new level, you have to prove why you should get promoted and advanced to a higher status. These big companies donβt know what is going on in the streets. If a rider wants a big company sponsor or support he or she needs to go out there, prove it and open the eyes of these companies that donβt know or understand. Youβve been all over the world this year. What has been your favorite place you have visited so far and why? Yeah Iβve been traveling a bunch this year and I would have to say Rome was one of my favorite stops, the food is amazing and they had some wild spots that Iβd seen in a few videos that I always wanted to ride. Whatβs the weirdest thing you have eaten on your world travels? Between all my travel Iβve tasted some out of this world dishes, but I would have to say China takes the cake for weirdest food I have ever tried. So, Austin is awesome. your thoughts? Austin? ahhhhh............. next question Whatβs up with the Knicks? Why do they suck so bad? I couldnβt tell you Iβm a Giants fan. Last words: Thanks bro.
The bust rail. Austin.

The Man Behind THE Brand
Meet Ken Block. Heβs kinda the Bill Gates of the Action Sports shoe business. The co-founder of DC shoes is living the life these days while still leading the vast empire that he helped create. Some may call him a visionary. He can be credited with changing the way shoes are marketed to our industry today. In hindsight, he did the right things that seem so obvious: build a good product, advertise it and sponsor the best athletes.
INDUSTRY INSIGHT
KEN BLOCK
Whatever his formula is, it has proven immensely successful vaulting DC to what is arguably the top action sports shoe brand on the market today. Ken is a very busy man these days, but we barged into his office unannounced and asked him a few questions. He had answers. DC has always sponsored top athletes in Action Sports. What do you look for when deciding who you want to rep the DC? β’ Hiring the right athletes is not easy! We always look for athletes that are at the top of their game and fit the style of our brand. Thatβs not always a combination thatβs easy to find....and sometimes we even make mistakes. In the fickle and ever-changing market that is Action Sports, how has the DC brand remained relevant where so many other brands have come and gone? β’ Our goal is to always try and be relevant to the tastes of our ever-changing youth/athletic markets. Thatβs not very easy, but at least we try very hard at it. My business partner Damon Way and I both grew up as skateboarders, plus we snowboarded, rode dirt bikes, BMX bikes, etc. so we both instinctively knew and understood the markets. Thatβs a big help for a company
like this when the founders grew up in those cultures and continue to be involved in them. One of your βhobbiesβ these days is rally racing. What brought you to the sport? β’ I have loved rally racing since I was a little kid. I was never a big fan of car sports where the cars went around in circles or just went straight...I like cars that jump and slide. So, when Travis started racing rally in 2004 it opened my eyes to the fact that there was a championship here in the US (before that, I thought it was only a European thing). So, I went and took a 4 day class in N.H. and I was hooked. You and TP have a pretty good rivalry going. Do you ever think about loosening a couple of his lugnuts and βborrowingβ his spare just before a 15 mile stage? β’ Travis is the most competitive person I have ever met! Itβs been really fun racing with him these past couple years and I look forward to racing with him and Dave for many more to come. And, YES, some days I feel like messing with his car before a stage! Whatβs the deal with the number β43β? β’ βDβ is the 4th letter of the alphabet and βCβ is the 3rd letter. Get it? Seriously though, why arenβt you retired on a beach somewhere? β’ I am very lucky to have built an amazing company (that I take a lot of pride in) and to have a pro rally racing career. I appreciate my position more than you can imagine and I plan on doing them both for as long as I possibly can.

THE SHOES INTERVIEWS
Nike 6.0 Insurgent
Nigel Sylvesterruns
Nike 6.0 Mavrk Mid
whatβs newat the swoosh?
Mike Spinnerruns
VIDEO IN PROGRESS: Nike 6.0βs βEVOLUTIONβ In 2008, the job title βProfessional BMX Riderβ goes hand in hand with the term βprofessional-airline-passenger.β With contests, demos, photo shoots, and constant road trips, it takes something pretty serious to make top pros to add even more travel to the equation. And thatβs exactly what Mirracoβs Nigel Sylvester and Mike Spinner signed up for when they went to work filming for the upcoming Nike 6.0 video titled βEvolution.β When a company like Nike throws its support behind a project, you know itβs going to be a wild ride, and thatβs exactly what these guys have been on.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: WHAT THE HECK DOES THE 6.0 STAND FOR? The 6.0 stands for the six action sports our brand supports: BMX, Snow, Surf, Freeski, Wake, and Moto. HOW MANY BMX SPECIFIC SHOES DOES NIKE 6.0 HAVE IN THE LINE FOR β09? ANY NEW SIGNATURE MODELS? In the BMX World, the Insurgent and the Oncore are the unrivaled favorites. Both are durable, have air units for cushioning, and a nice grippy tread pattern. The Mavrk Mid, our only vulcanized sole, is gaining momentum as well. For SP09, there are no signature shoes per say, though weβll make some color ways influenced by the team riders. HOW MUCH INVOLVEMENT DOES THE RIDER HAVE IN THE SHOE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS? The athletes come up to the Headquarters a few times a year to do product reviews, comment on whatβs hot, whatβs not. Supporting the athletes is our main priority, so we want them involved in the product as much as possible. The product team really values athlete insight, and they are agile enough to execute requests pretty quickly. MANY PEOPLEβS PERCEPTION OF NIKE INVOLVES A BUNCH OF STUFFY OLD DUDES IN SUITS SITTING AROUND A BOARDROOM DECIDING WHAT THE KIDS WANT. PLEASE DISPEL THIS PERCEPTION. You must be speaking about Losey directly. Heβs pretty old, but not as stuffy as he comes off. No, the 6.0 team is really really lucky. We have a young, small team who work long hours to get it all done, but we all shred together year round and share a lot of good times. We have a lot of fun coming up with our antics, and knowing that Nike supports what we are doing puts us in a great place. Boardroom? We do have a lot of meetings, but itβs necessary to regroup with everyone and make sure we are all tracking and supporting each other. NIKE 6.0 SEEMS TO BE ONE OF THE HOTTEST SHOE BRANDS RIGHT NOW. HOW HAS NIKE FOUND SUCCESS WHEN OTHERS, SOME WITH STRIPES, THREW IN THE TOWEL? Nike realized that action sports is a different game, and to be part of it, traditional models were not going to succeed. Nike broke ground by building a small team of people from the industry, giving them the reigns, and letting them start out in a small, genuine, committed way. Nike 6.0 has the autonomy to do what we think is right and enough trust that we can afford to be a bit irreverent. Being able to be ourselves with the blessing of the bigger Nike, is a great place to be in. Another key to our success is our team mentors, who are key figures from each sport who manage the teams and validate our efforts. IS NIKE 6.0 IN FOR THE LONG HAUL? 100%. From the top levels, Nike realizes the potential of action sports and the importance of the youth consumer. Nike 6.0 has successfully reached this market. We have great leaders who understand our need to be committed and genuine, and really allow us to grow slowly and organically, instead of trying to dominate one day then bailing the next. Nike is expecting and empowering us to succeed by letting us continue to be ourselves.
The idea of a 6.0 video wasnβt exactly planned when the BMX team was formedβit simply had to happen. The team went on one trip to New York to shoot photos for ads, and every day they fired out ridiculous stuff nonstop. It only made sense to document it correctly to show what these guys are all about. The four main riders in the video will be Nigel, Spinner, Dennis Enarson and Garrett Reynolds. On top of the already-hectic contest schedule, the 6.0 team has been on a nonstop filming mission hitting Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Vegas, Portland, Philadelphia, Melbourne, Australia, Beijing, Chinaβyou get the point. The crew has been throwing down nonstop, and the video, set to drop in the fall, will be the proof in the pudding. Nigel has been lacing street lines with his signature style around the globe, and Spinner has
IS NIKE 6.0 IN FOR THE LONG HAUL? β100%. From the top levels, Nike realizes the potential of action sports and the importance of the youth consumer.β
delivered all of his park madness mixed in with street stuff that shows how tech the guy is. The 6.0 team has been 100% involved in the entire video production from day-one. The riders are getting final say over all aspects to make sure that βEvolutionβ represents them correctly as both riders and as individuals. This generation of riders is changing the sport, and the goal of βEvolutionβ is to let the viewer see it happening on the big screen. Watch for Nike 6.0βs βEvolutionβ to be delivered late this fall. The riders had enough incredible riding for a full-length video at the beginning of summer, so you will not believe what theyβve come through with by the time it finally drops. MIRRACOMANUAL

beh You raced for vans before working there how did that come about? I was 12 years old and at a BMX National when Steve Van Doren gave me my first pair of Vans. Ever since then I have been wearing Vans. How long did you race bmx for and what are some carreer highlights? I started racing BMX in Washington at age 9. Always love to ride my bike. Made jumps out of wood and all kinds of stuff. My bike broke and my dad went to a local bike shop to get parts. He saw a race flyer about BMX racing. My dad, mom, my little brother and myself all went for a weekend and I got hooked ever since. My career highlights are 2005 UCI World Champion and Bronze Medalist . 2003, 2004, 2005 NBL National #1 in 20inch and cruiser. BMX Plus Cover January 1994. NBL #1 Factory Team with ProCycles, which we beat the top teams (GT, Powerlite). When you first got the TM position, who was the first athlete you sponsored? When I got the TM position the first person I sponsored was Scotty Cranmer. I think I was his first paying sponsor. I think he was 14 or 15 years old then. What are the pros and cons of being a TM?
THE SHOES INTERVIEWS
Jerry Badders is the Vans/Pro-tec Sports Marketing Manager. If it has anything to do with BMX, Moto X, Skate, Snowboarding it goes through this guy, heβs a top bloke. I think the reason heβs so good at what he does is because he has been there and done that, heβs not just a guy in a suit. Most people are super lucky to get a cover in BMX, but Jerry has had 7 covers in his life time. He snowboards every winter and is at every contest/event. Badders is into every sport, he plays basketball and soccer with the guys at work during lunch. I hate football but I know his whole familyβs favorite team is the San Diego Chargers. Jerry has season tickets and goes to all the home games, true fan. And before he got the TM spot at Vans, he raced for Vans for 10 years as an amateur and 4 years as a Pro before getting hurt and taking a desk job.
The pros of being a TM is you get to travel and be with your friends. Having everything paid for and seeing the world. The cons of being a TM is you get phone calls from wifes, moms, dads, and you tell the riders 100 times what time practice and everything is. You get no sleep cuz you go out with the guys who want to go out and you get up early with the guys who donβt go out, TIRED after the weekend. Last but not least, what is a typical day in the life of Jerry Badders? Typical day in the life of Jerry Badders is waking up at 6:45am, getting to Vans before 7:30am. Show up early so I can get all my BMX/Moto stuff done. Then end up helping everyone else out with their needs and stuff. Then go home and wait for tomorrow. On contest days I get all the riders up and feed them and make sure they know their schedule that day. I Love it. These guys are my family.

Rally car racing in Europe is a big deal. Top drivers can make bank and are regarded as some of the best drivers in the world. America: not so much. But thatβs all about to change. In recent years, some of the biggest action sports names in the world have found a new way to get their required dose of adrenaline. Names like Pastrana, Bartram, Block, and now Mirra have dived head first into the sport of Rally and are looking to bring this sport to the forefront of action sports. In Rally racing, the concept is simple: go as fast as you can from point A to point B usually on gravel or snow covered roads through the woods, over dirt jumps and through streams all while trying not to completely destroy the car in the process. Most races have several stages, all of which are timed and the winner is the team whose car survives with the fastest combined time at the completion of all of the stages. In Rally racing, itβs not a matter of if you will mess up your car, itβs a matter of when, and how bad. Those that make it through the stage with a car that can be repaired, are given a short amount of time, maybe 45 minutes to, in some cases, completely rebuild the car. Itβs pretty common for a car to come back to the pits with a flat tire, but several other costly failures are also somewhat common such as turbo failures, missing body panels or blown suspension. The top teams have a pit crew similar to Nascar that jumps into action as soon as the car is brought back into the pits for βserviceβ. If the car can be repaired, itβs on to the next stage. If itβs too damaged, that teamβs day, and rally, are done.

Although there are several classes, without a doubt the Open class is the one to watch. These are the factory cars where no expense is spared and are the cars that the top drivers such as Pastrana, Block and Mirra compete in. Rally events are very fan friendly and the price is right (free). Spectators are encouraged to get up close and personal with the cars and drivers during Parc Expose, a pre-stage

event where the drivers and cars are presented to the fans for photos, questions, interviews, autographs, etc. Although the nature of racing through the woods at ridiculous speeds only allows the fans to see the cars either once or twice per stage, thereΓ’€™s something pretty cool about seeing a street legal car coming into a gravel turn at 90mph, tapping the brake to pitch it sideways while attempting to maintain enough control to negotiate an unknown corner without hitting the tree, guardrail, deer, boulder, etc. With names like Pastrana, Block and Mirra leading the charge, itΓ’€™s only a matter of time before this cool sport gets the attention it deserves.

TRAVIS PASTRANA
Youβve become one of the top drivers in a relativley short period of time. What brought you to Rally racing? I grew up driving anything I could get my hands on and as far as car racing goes, rally relates the most to motocross. I think people tend to gravitate toward things they do well. I never had the precision and patience to drive consistent laps around a circuit. With rally, there it is easy to stay focused because you are constantly flying over blind jumps and sliding through corners with wheels hanging off cliffs and brushing past trees. What is the coolest thing about racing Rally cars? The chicks.. people would be amazed at the quality of girls that swarm to rally events in the middle of nowhere.
Do you have any aspirations of going over to Europe for the World Rally Series? I really wanted to give Europe a shot when I first started racing rally because I wanted to see what I could do against the best. Itβs a completely different sport over there than it is in the states. Iβve found the WRC is much more of a survival event than an all out race like in the USA. I suck at trying to conserve the vehicle over the long format of those events and Iβm not mechanically inclined enough to fix them. I like the USA! Whatβs the status of your moto career? are you over it? People always think of things in black and white. I love riding motorcycles and like to ride every day that I can. If I come up with a new trick, I will show up to a freestyle event and If I am feeling spunky and have a few months to get in shape, Iβll sign up for a race. I donβt have any desire to be hurt all the time or compete every weekend so if thatβs what you meant by over it, then yes. Youβre known for pushing whatever you do beyond limits of reason. That said, what do you do to unwind? I ride road bicycles to relax. Nothing is more relaxing than putting my ipod on and taking off for the day.
the
199
Whatβs the scariest thing youβve done in all of your sports? The funny thing is that every new trick you come up with always seems like the scariest thing Iβve ever done... Then you figure out how to do it and it no longer scares you. Racing always scares me because itβs always easy to make up at least 2 seconds a lap doing something dumb and I would rather crash trying to win than not try. Having said that, the most nervous I have ever been was the split second that I deployed my pilot chute less than 1 second before I hit the ground into the Grand Canyon. There was nothing more I could do then wait and pray my chute was packed perfectly. Any hiccup in the opening and that was all she wrote. Most painful injury? With my shattered pelvis when I was 14, every time I woke up, I passed out. For more than a week I couldnβt stay awake long enough to tell the doctor if I was paralyzed so they did the surgury to fuse my spinal column to my pelvis thinking I was paralyzed.. After that I didnβt fear too much because I figured that the most pain I could ever experience, any more and I would pass out :)

How itβs Made
making a mirraco
For years, virtually all BMX companies have made their products in Asia. Many donβt talk about it, many wonβt talk about it. Many fabricate stories about working conditions and 12 year old girls welding frames. As they say, donβt believe everything you read.
01
06
11
It all starts right here. Tons and tons of raw steel tubing. Mirraco uses more Crmo tubing than any of our competitors especially in our entry level bikes.
Left side chainstays lined up after welding. The left and right chainstays are then joined with a bridge.
Finish welding of the front triangle.
02
Tubes get cut, shaped and mitered on several different machines to prepare them for assembly.
07
The now joined chainstay unit is inserted into a jig and machined at the front to match the round shape of the BB shell.
12
In this station, the frame begins to take shape. First, the front triangle is inserted into the jig along with the chainstay assembly from the rack in #8.
At Mirraco, weβre proud of our factory and believe they do an awesome job building the products that we design and you buy. Our factory makes bikes and bikes only. They donβt make wheelchairs, lawn furniture, or roll cages. They make bikes and thatβs it. They build what they know and they know what they build. Weβve decided to take you right onto the factory floor, to show the process first hand of what it takes to make a Mirraco.
16
More finish welding. In this stage, all welds that were previously tacked are completed.
17
Frame is insterted into a jig and the seat tube is reamed.
03
08
Blend tubesets ready for assembly. This group will make about 100 frames.
Finished chainstays are hung on a staging rack.
04
Prior to production, one frame is tacked up to check angles and fitment of tubes.
05
09
The jig used to confirm chainstay chainstay length.
10
13
The seat stay is then inserted into the jig and mated with the dropout and front triangle.
14
18
Final frame alignment is done by hand to assure the frame you buy is straight and dialed.
19
Tack welding the stays.
In the final step, the brake bosses are welded into place. This is done at the end to avoid the possibility of warping from the heat associated with the previous welding. This assures the posts are straight and in the right place.
15
20
Actual frame production is done on a welding line seperated into stations. Each welder has a task. This side of the line handles the rear section of the frame. Here, this welder attaches the dropout to one of the chainstays.
On the opposite side of the welding line, the front ends are made. Here, the downtube, headtube, toptube, seat tube and BB shell are jigged and tack welded.
The frame takes shape.
The finished product. Ready for chemical bath treatment and off to the paint booth for color and graphics and then to a dealer near you. MIRRACOMANUAL
